SEASON OUTLOOK/PREVIEW
Season Outlook QUICK FACTS
Appalachian State University men’s soccer enters a new era in 2016 after finishing 8-10-0 and 3-4-0 in Sun Belt Conference play last season. 2015 ended with two hard-fought matches in the SBC tournament, where the Mountaineers defeated NJIT 2-1 in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals in a knockdown drag-out fight against Hartwick 1-0.
COACHES
This year, App State is looking to capitalize on the late success of last season and take things to a whole other level with first-year head coach Jason O’Keefe. O’Keefe comes from being an assistant at North Carolina and brings with him a championship mentality and a long list of accolades in recruiting. Jeff Bilyk and Ronnie Hreha will be familiar faces on the sidelines, staying as assistants for Appalachian.
PLAYERS
The Mountaineers will be led by a host of returners, including last year’s first-team all-Sun Belt selection Stephen Chapman. Joining him on the veteran line will be Jonovan Japp, Jordan Melia, Ben Steen, Keegan Tanaka and Jaron Bradley in the net. Other returners include Cooper Coughlin, Jeremy Tshongo, John Walrath, Daniel Avila, Ian Bennett and Jake Chasteen.

COACHES
Jason O’Keefe, a 16-year coaching veteran, enters his first season after being named the 12th head coach in Appalachian State University men’s soccer history, on January 20, 2016. O’Keefe’s 16 years of coaching experience includes stints with some of the nation’s most successful men’s soccer programs, including North Carolina, Saint Louis and Wake Forest. O’Keefe spent the past two seasons (2014-15) at North Carolina, where he helped the Tar Heels to a pair of top-10 finishes (No. 5 and No. 9 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America polls in 2014 and 2015, respectively). UNC earned NCAA Tournament berths both seasons that O’Keefe was on the Heels’ coaching staff and fell just one win short of advancing to the 2014 College Cup, falling to No. 2 seed UCLA on penalty kicks in the national quarterfinals. As North Carolina’s recruiting coordinator, O’Keefe helped the Tar Heels land back-to-back top-10 signing classes, including what is currently ranked as the nation’s No. 1 class for 2016, according to TopDrawerSoccer.com. Prior to his two seasons at UNC, O’Keefe was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Saint Louis for four seasons (2010-13). With O’Keefe on staff, SLU won two Atlantic 10 Conference championships (2012 tournament, 2013 regular season), earned a No. 8 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and were ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region in both 2012 and 2013. For his efforts at Saint Louis, O’Keefe was named the NSCAA’s Mid-Atlantic Assistant Coach of the Year in 2012 and, in 2013, he was tabbed as one of the nation’s top 15 assistant coaches by CollegeSoccerNews.com. O’Keefe’s successful time at SLU was preceded by three seasons (2007-09) at Elon, where he coached in the same conference (Southern) as Appalachian State. He was an assistant coach for his first two seasons at Elon before being promoted to associate head coach for his final campaign with the Phoenix. His promotion to associate head coach came after he helped lead Elon to the first regular-season SoCon championship in school history in 2008. During his three years at Elon, O’Keefe recruited and/or coached four SoCon Players of the Year, including 2009 SoCon Freshman of the Year and 2010 and 2012 SoCon Player of the Year Chris Thomas. Prior to his three seasons at Elon, O’Keefe helped lead Cincinnati to the first Big East Conference championship in school history and an NCAA Tournament berth in his lone season with the Bearcats (2006). O’Keefe’s first opportunity as a Division I coach came at Wake Forest, where he helped lead the Demon Deacons to three NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons (2003-05). WFU won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship and earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in 2004. All three of O’Keefe’s Demon Deacon squads won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the third round in both 2004 and 2005. At Wake Forest, O’Keefe coached the ACC’s 2003 and 2004 Offensive Players of the Year and the 2004 Defensive Player of the Year. O’Keefe’s began his coaching career with three seasons (2000-02) at his alma mater, Greensboro College. During his threeseason coaching stint at Greensboro, the Pride won three-consecutive Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships. As a student-athlete at Greensboro, he helped the Pride to three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, the 1996 South Region championship and the 1994 Dixie Conference title. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, O’Keefe has also served as a scout for the US Soccer Development Academy (2012-16), a head coach in the North Carolina Olympic Development program (2007-10), director of coaching for the Burlington Soccer Club in Burlington, N.C. (2007-10) and assistant director of coaching for the Twin City Soccer Association in WinstonSalem (2003-06). A Dean’s List student, O’Keefe graduated from Greensboro College in 1997 with a B.A. in history. He holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” license and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) advanced national diploma. O’Keefe and his wife, Julie Isley O’Keefe, have one son Jonah Craig O’Keefe.

SoCon COACH OF THE YEAR
Nine Mountaineers have earned Southern Conference Player of the Year honors 13 times in the storied history of ASU soccer, more than any other program in the SoCon. Appalachian maintained a stranglehold on the prestigious honor during the 1970s and 1980s with nine straight Players of the Year from 1977-1985. Thompson Usyian earned the honor three time during that period (1977, 78, 80) and still remains the only SoCon player to be dubbed Player of the Year three times in his career.
Appalachian also boasts the most SoCon Coach of the Year honors with an ASU coach earning the honor 11 times.

Appalachian Soccer Stadium at The Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex 2016 MOUNTAINEER MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
In 2015, Appalachian soccer begins its seventh season of play at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Completed in 2008, the facility features two artificial turf fields as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) Ted Mackorell Complex is located off of Brookshire Road, and is easily accessible from US-421. In addition to the Appalachian Soccer Stadium, two other fields (one turf, one grass) provide local high school HCSA teams a chance to play soccer throughout the year. The stadium is complete with a modern press box and seating for up to 1,000 spectators. In 2010, a new addition was added to the complex, featuring locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. Each locker room contains 30 lockers, showers, bathrooms, television and sound system. Additionally, the structure includes a concession stand and restrooms for the public.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SECOND YEAR AT APPALACHIAN STATE ALMA MATER: SUNY CORTLAND, 1991 Doug Gillin was named director of athletics at Appalachian State University on Feb. 27, 2015. He officially began in the role on April 6, 2015. Gillin, 47, possesses more than two decades of professional experience in collegiate athletics, most recently as deputy director of athletics at the University of Missouri. He spent three years at Missouri and played a prominent role in the Tigers’ transition to the Southeastern Conference. At Mizzou, Gillin was involved in all facets of the athletics department’s financial planning and budget development, was a member of the department’s strategic plan development team and oversaw all external operations, including the Tiger Scholarship Fund development unit, Mizzou Sports Properties, strategic communications and game operations. Most notably, he helped lead the University’s athletics capital campaign and was involved in a $102 million facilities enhancement plan for football, baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field. Additionally, he was responsible for all facets of Missouri’s day-to-day operations in the absence of the athletics director, had direct oversight over men’s basketball and was part of a three-person administrative team that oversaw the Tigers’ football program. Prior to his arrival at Missouri in 2012, Gillin spent a decade in North Carolina in various roles with ISP Sports/IMG College, the country’s leading collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management company. During his 10-year stint with Winston-Salem-based ISP/IMG, he served as the company’s senior vice president (2002-07), executive vice president/chief sales officer (2007-10) and senior vice president for college properties (2010-12). In those roles, he managed the company’s entire sales force, which included approximately 350 employees and more than 90 university and conference partnerships. Before joining the ISP/IMG corporate headquarters, Gillin spent the first nine years of his athletics career on college campuses. He began as an assistant ticketing/business office director at Lehigh (1993-94) then served as an assistant marketing director at New Mexico (1994-95) and Missouri (1995-97). In 1997, he became the general manager of Mizzou Sports Properties before taking the same position with Syracuse Sports Properties in 1999. The Binghamton, N.Y. native was a four-year letterwinner in ice hockey at SUNY Cortland from 1987-91. He was a two-time team MVP and was selected as the squad’s co-captain in 1990. He graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1991 with a B.S. in physical education (sports management concentration). He went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education from Ohio University in 1993.

The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants. APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. THE APPALACHIAN EXPERIENCE
Appalachian was founded in 1899 by the Dougherty brothers to provide access to education for children in the “lost provinces.” The pioneering spirit necessary to overcome the mountains’ hardships quickly characterized the institution, giving Appalachian a special niche in higher education that continues today. After more than a century, students still feel the pull of this unique place to transform their lives, and Appalachian has remained focused on providing students with educational experiences that are not only life-changing but world-changing. Alumni go on to earn advanced degrees, approach life entrepreneurially, build distinguished military careers, work overseas and develop careers that take them in many directions, all while giving back to the communities in which they live and work.
WHY CHOOSE APPALACHIAN? STUDENTS CHOOSE APPALACHIAN BECAUSE THEY CAN: • Engage in critical inquiry with a community of scholars • Discover and demonstrate their passion through research or performance • Travel the nation and the world to learn about themselves and the world around them • Engage with communities at home and across the world • Create lifelong bonds and friendships with faculty and fellow scholars • Develop a deep and holistic understanding of sustainability • Channel their desire to make a real and lasting change in the world Appalachian faculty members are known for using innovative, interdisciplinary and integrative curricula, being dedicated to research and student mentorship, and investing in new strategies and technologies. BOONE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA Boone, North Carolina, is a college town in the best sense—a place where people say ‘Hello’ on the street and with a vibrant downtown a block from campus. Its eclectic hub, known as King Street, features specialty shops, restaurants and cultural attractions that appeal to students, parents, residents and tourists. Whether in town for a weekend or a four-year education, many people find it difficult to leave Boone. Boone’s accolades include National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Outside magazine’s top 10 “Best Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards,” U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” and TripAdvisor’s “Hidden Gems: 13 U.S. Towns That Are Diamonds in the Rough.” Boone is ranked the 10th safest place in North Carolina by Movoto.com and 19th in SafeWise.com’s “50 Safest Cities in North Carolina,” based on FBI crime report data. The surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains attract outdoor enthusiasts year-round for hiking, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, cycling, fishing, kayaking, rock climbing and other activities. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which draws some 20 million visitors a year, and a section of the Appalachian Trail that runs from Virginia and Tennessee through western North Carolina, are both just minutes from campus. Preserving these mountains is essential to Appalachian’s character. An ethic of sustainability resounds through the campus and local community, as evident through an on-campus electricity-generating wind turbine, a commitment to making new buildings efficiently designed and LEED® certified, a biodiesel-powered public transportation system, and research and academic degree programs that focus on issues related to energy, economics and the environment. Many sustainability projects on campus are funded by a Renewable Energy Initiative fee, which students overwhelmingly supported as a way to ensure a better future for all. The natural setting places outdoor recreation and experiential learning programs at our doorstep and the heritage of the region is alive on and around campus. The university’s location also attracts students, faculty and staff interested in sustainable development and the economics of sustainability. As a result, the Research Institute for Environment, Energy and Economics is spearheading cutting-edge research that is making Appalachian a leader in this area. The 2010 U.S. Census lists the population of Watauga County at 51,079 and the population of Boone at 17,186. Boone is known for having friendly, safe neighborhoods and quality schools.

State’s Largest Wind Turbine – This community-scale, 100-kilowatt wind turbine stands 153 feet and feeds enough electricity directly to the grid to power 15 homes. It was paid for primarily through student funds and in partnership with the university-affiliated utility, New River Light and Power. Aside from producing clean energy, the turbine serves as an educational monument to Appalachian’s ethic of sustainability. Howard Knob – Located just a half mile from downtown Boone, this peak has an elevation of 4,420 feet and is known more commonly as Howard’s Knob. It was named for Benjamin Howard, a Revolutionary War loyalist who fled to a cave there to escape American patriots.
