MERRY AND BLESSED CHRISTMAS TO BROTHERS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF COUNCIL 4970 GRAND KNIGHTS MESSAGE RICHARD SCHULTZ
Brothers-in-Christ: November started with a tribute to our Past Grand Knight Brother Eldon Hancock. A great time was had by all and good food. I was also proud to present the Certificate for Family of the Month to Eldon and his lovely wife, Joanne. Eldon passed out Rosary rings to officers and their ladies. Success to Eldon in his great works & continued support from Joanne (it works both ways, Eldon!) On Election Day Christianity won Proposition 8. Read Brother Jim Lynch’s article regarding a legal brief against those who continue to work with Satan trying to wreck havoc on the Sacrament of Marriage. I was saddened by our lost of Proposition 4; we will continue to fight for all that is right. On Nov 11th and always, we are proud of our military veterans including those now serving (see pictures page 3). Our annual Memorial Mass and luncheon came shortly after. I would thank Ken and Glenda Macdonald for their great program for our widows. On the 23rd we were honored to support St. John the Evangelist parish in celebrating the Feast of Christ the King. The procession with the Blessed Sacrament was led by Pastor Tom Bland, a joint Assembly Color Corps, parish Knights, and parishioners. It is truly an honor to be part of this magnificent display of worship to the Blessed Sacrament. Please pray during this Advent season for the gift of the Holy Spirit upon this country. Kim and I wish all my brothers, families and friends, a very blessed Christmas. Remember, "Keep Christ in Christmas", and it is okay say, Merry Christmas! Vivat, Jesus!

BISHOP GALLEGOS MATERNITY HOME Martha (Marty) Condon JOY OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON & BLESSINGS FROM THE LORD AND THE HAPPINESS OF WONDERFUL MEMORIES! Thank you to those of you who have already been able to support the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home (BGMH) Stocking Project and also to those of you offering prayers who are unable to give material support at this time. My husband Jack (John) says if you have missed my pre-nativity Gospel interpretations, you have really missed something unique! I remind people that, technically, the Virgin Mary was an unmarried mother. She knew very well she could have been stoned to death for her Pro-Life decisions…then my comparing Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth's home to the stay of the young women of the BGMH. UNIQUE!!! None of us like to see empty Christmas stockings, and I am pleased to report that monies are beginning to come in. If every member (and their wives) of the Council would donate at least the cost of a "Fancy" cup of coffee ($3 to $4) or a Pack of Cigarettes ($5 to $6), as Sister "Mary Perpetual" would say "offer it up, it's good for your soul" or as your family physician would say about giving up a pack of cigarettes, "it would be good for your body", we would make the goal for much needed monies ($1500 to $2000). Of course if you can be more generous, the young women of the BGMH will be more than thank-full, and I would not turn it down. Also we have been very successful to also donate something for the Home itself…and Lenore Mullarkey, Director, again has a wish list of needs. Lenore say, “About 80 percent of our women come from the streets — people sleeping on the steps of St. Francis Church, from St. John Shelter, or are sleeping in a car,” The women at the Home plan and cook the meals, clean up the kitchen and keep the rest of the house tidy. After having their baby, each of the women and their child are given needed assistance for about three months getting started in their new life. This assistance includes financial budgeting and how to keep their own savings account book. Upon leaving, they are typically referred to various social services for assistance during the transition to financial independence. Also this activity is a religious "2 Fer" - this action is both a "Spiritual Act of Mercy" and a "Corporal Act of Mercy." Let us pile up the good works in Heaven together. Brother Knights can bring your donation to the December meeting or better yet contact me at (916) 483-1732, by email (which I hate): nicenures@gmail.com, or send your donation (KofC 4970) directly to me at Martha Condon. MEMORIAL MASS…Ken MacDonald, Chairman On Saturday, November 8, our council held its annual Widow's Memorial Service in the Chapel at St. John the Evangelist Parish. Nine widows of Brother Knights who have passed were able to attend. Many were accompanied by family members. Co-Chaplain, Fr. Tom Bland presided over the service with assistance from Co-Chaplain Fr. Ted Wroblicky. Musical accompaniment was provided by Brother Knight Bob Raymond and Lady Knight Joyce Wakefield. A wonderful luncheon was provided by Brother Roy Lasich in the St. James Hall following the mass. Of course, I thank my wife, Glenda, for all she does to help me make this a special day of tribute to our Lady Knights in appreciation of their dedication to the work and service of their husbands past. -------------------------Below: To the Left is Brother Kevin Holeman (who is currently in Afghanistan leading an Infantry Battalion). In the center is Brother Miguel Sabral who will be returning to Iraq for another tour of duty and to the right is Randy Fischbach, son of Ray and Pat Fischbach. Randy is with the 101st Airborne and has just completed his 2nd tour in Iraq. --------------------------We are saddened by the passing of Brother Chester Janus on November 19th. “Chet” served in the US Army/Air Force for 33 years and retired as a Colonel. He flew the dangerous and challenging Burma Hump during WW II, but also served in Korea and Vietnam. His wife Lady Knight Bea passed in 2001. He operated a realty business and taught at Consumnes College. Chester joined the Order in 1939 and was a parishioner at Divine Savior Parish in Orangevale. A Resolution of Condolence was presented to Brother Chester’s two daughters. May he rest in peace, Amen Prayers also for the repose of the souls of Daniel O’Brien, father in law of Brother Michael Corcoran, Simplica Ranin, mother of Fr. Aldo Ranin, and Rosa Martinez, mother in law of Brother Ponce). Rest in Peace… -------------------Combined Bishop Manogue and Christ the King Assemblies together with Council Knights and parishioners escorted Fr. Tom Bland and the Blessed Sacrament around St. John the Evangelist parish grounds to celebrate the Feast of Christ the King prior to mass. What a lovely tradition that has been started at the parish. Thanks to all Brothers and of course to those members of the Color Corps that are not members of parishes or our Council.

Chaplain’s Chat – Father Tom Bland: We are in the Advent Season in our Church – the four week preparation period before the celebration of Christmas. Advent has a twofold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming to us is remembered, and as a season when that remembrance directs our mind and heart to await Christ’s second coming at the end of time. Advent thus is a period of devout and joyful expectation. Prior to December 17, Advent readings and prayers emphasize Christ’s second coming at the end of time. From December 17 through December 25 the readings and prayers will emphasize the first coming. The use of the organ and other musical instruments and the decorating of the church and altar with flowers should be done in a moderate manner, as is consonant with the character of the season, without anticipating the full joy of Christmas. The official color for Advent is violet. The Advent Wreath we will light each week next to the Ambo. Advent is also a time to recall the cry of the ancient Christians: Maranatha!.....Come, Lord Jesus!” You are cordially invited to A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!!! Guest of Honor: Jesus Christ • • • •
Date: Every day. Traditionally, December 25 but He's always around, so the date is flexible... Time: Whenever you're ready. (Please don't be late, though, or you'll miss out on all the fun!) Place: In your heart.... He'll meet you there. (You'll hear Him knock.) Attire: Come as you are... grubbies are okay. He'll be washing our clothes anyway. He said something about new white robes and crowns for everyone who stays till the last. Tickets: Admission is free. He's already paid for everyone... (He says you wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway...it cost Him everything He had. But you do need to accept the ticket!! Refreshments: New wine, bread, and a far-out drink He calls "Living Water," followed by a supper that promises to be out of this world! Gift Suggestions: ; Your life. He's one of those people who already has everything else. (He's very generous in return though. Just wait until you see what He has for you!) Entertainment: Joy, Peace, Truth, Light, Life, Love, Real Happiness, Communion with God, Forgiveness, Miracles, Healing, Power, Eternity in Paradise, Contentment, and much more! (All "G" rated, so bring your family and friends.) R.S.V.P. Very Important! He must know ahead so He can reserve a spot for you at the table. MEMBERSHIP/RECRUITMENT, CHUCK CUNY, RECRUITMENT CHAIRMAN Greeting Brother Knights, As you know, recruiting new members is one of the top priorities of any organization. INSURANCE REPORT - JIM JORDAN, FIELD AGENT These are certainly difficult economic times, and everyone is very aware of the turmoil that surrounds us: credit issues, housing issues, banking issues. For the average consumer, and the average member of the Knights of Columbus, the question is obvious: “Where do I turn?” I’d like to suggest a conversation with your professionally trained K of C insurance agent, that’s me, about ways to protect yourself and your family. While some might say, “I can’t think about spending money right now,” the goal is not spending money, but saving money. Saving money through permanent life insurance with guaranteed cash values, and/or saving money through a retirement plan with guaranteed interest rates are excellent ways to prepare for your retirement. Both products can offer you a guaranteed monthly income for life. Let your Order help you. As you go through the Holiday Season, be mindful of the real meaning of CHRISTmas. Let’s keep Christ in CHRISTmas. Take time to enjoy your family and friends. Think of those things God has given us. Remember that you are the one who your family counts on for tomorrow’s support. The Knights of Columbus is here to help assure that mission is met. May God bless you all and Have a very Merry CHRISTmas and Safe New Year. P.S. Knights of Columbus Annuities, 4th Quarter Rates are 4.5% with an additional .25% when deposits accumulate over $10,000 for 4.75%. Offer expires December 31, 2008. Call me for the five (5) year guaranteed rate for the Vantage Annuity. Fraternally, Your Brother and Field Agent, Jim Jordan, FICF CA Lic # 0D46311, NV License # 525422, Phone 916-663-1946 Cell 916-765-9325, e-mail: jim.jordan@kofc.org

FAMILY OF THE MONTH…….TODD WILSON AND JERRY MARENICH, CO-CHAIRMEN Each month, Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 honors a Brother member and his Family who exemplify the values taught by our Church and our Order. Congratulations to the Gene and Jeannie Gobbo Family, our October 2008 Family of the Month. Brother Gene has been a very active member of the council for many years. He is twice a District Deputy, a Past Grand Knight of Council 4970, and for years, was also our Membership Committee Chairman. He is credited with recruiting many of our current members. Gene, and members of his family, have participated in most of the fund raising activities of the council, including our former Bingo Night, Reno Night and Turkey Cheer programs, and currently our Fireworks Booth and MR Drive. Gene is currently our Public Relations Chairman and is editor of our Paladin. Finally, Gene and Jeannie chaired the very successful annual “Frank DiLeo Italian Night Cioppino Dinner”, which has become one of the council’s most successful fund raisers. Gene and Jeannie are strong advocates of community and fraternal activities, and of maintaining strong and lasting relationships with their friends and members of the Knights of Columbus. They annually host a Super Bowl Party and Christmas Block Party and have invited friends, neighbors, and members of the Knights and their families to enjoy the friendship of others. Gene is retired from the Air Force Reserve, the Federal Highway Administration, and concluded his career teaching Extension classes with the University of California at Berkeley and consulting with many California cities and counties regarding highway engineering programming and design. Gene has been a member of St. Johns Pastoral Council, a chairman of the parish Spring Festival, is currently the Captain of Ushers at the Saturday Evening Mass, Leader of the Collection Counters, and assists the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Food Locker at St. Johns. We don’t mean to leave Jeannie or the family out of family activities. Jeannie current does Meals on Wheels for the County of Sacramento and is involved in many of the programs that Gene gets himself into…but in the background. Over the years their children were very supportive of and participated in programs at the parish and the Knights. Gene and Jeannie have four children and six grandchildren. Regina is a graduate of St Mary’s College in Moraga with a degree in Nursing and is living in Italy where her husband, David, is a Lt. Col. in the US Army. They have three children. Jennifer is a graduate of CSU, Sacramento, with a degree in MIS and currently works for Franklin-Templeton Investing. Melissa, married to Steve Robinson, has three children, is also a graduate of CSUS, with a degree in Marketing and is on the editorial staff of Western Home Furnishings Association. Carl is a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in Computer Science, and recently married his lovely wife, Kristine, now living in Florida. The members of Council 4970 are very proud of the Gobbo Family and are, indeed, fortunate to have them as members of the council. ---------------------------------------

THE PALADIN Marriage and the Law: California at the Cross-roads Sir Knight James Joseph Lynch, Jr., J.D.
We interrupt the regularly scheduled series, Capital Punishment, to bring you information on a braking event ... Marriage and the Law: California at the CrossRoads. The regularly scheduled series will be continued in the January Paladin. Introduction In 2000, California voters passed Proposition 22 stating that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” In May 2008, the California Supreme Court held, in In Re Marriage Cases (2008) 43 Cal. 4th 757 that the statute enacted by Proposition 22 violated the equal protection and inalienable rights provisions of the California Constitution. On November 6, 2008, proposition 8 passed and amended the California Constitution by adding Art. VIII, § 4. So now, who is right? Is a separate program for heterosexual and homosexual invidious discrimination? We are at a cross-roads, and more likely than not, we are headed to the U.S. Supreme Court for an answer. The In Re Marriage Cases Majority Opinion In its 2008 discussion, the Court took pains to state that its prior opinion had only challenged the legality of issuing marriage licenses to same sex persons….the legality of whether the law was constitutional was not at issue. However, it now reasoned that by virtue of Perez v. Sharp (1948) 32 Cal.2d 711 that the ban on inter-racial marriages had been found unconstitutional, marriage was a fundamental right requiring strict scrutiny, and denial of marriage to same sex marriages was unconstitutional, notwithstanding that both traditional marriages and civil unions, otherwise had the same rights and privileges. Thus the argument centered on a label, to wit, marriage, and that the right to marriage and procreation are recognized as fundamental constitutionally protected interests. (See, e.g., Conservatorship of Valerie N. (1985) 40 Cal.3d 143, 161 (Valerie N.) Minority Opinion Writing for the minority, Justice Baxter noted that “I cannot join the majority's holding that the California Constitution gives [43 Cal.4th 861] same-sex couples a right to marry. In reaching this decision, I believe, the majority violates the separation of powers, and thereby commits profound error. Moreover, I endorse the majority's interpretation of California's Domestic Partnership Act (DPA; Fam. Code, § 297 et seq.). As the majority makes clear, the DPA now allows same-sex partners to enter legal unions which "afford . . . virtually all of the [substantive] benefits and responsibilities afforded by California law to married opposite-sex couples." (Maj. opn., ante, at p. 807; see also Fam. Code, § 297.5). As the majority further correctly observes, California has done all it can do with regard to providing these substantive rights, benefits, and responsibilities to same-sex partners. (Maj. opn., ante, at pp. 806-807) fn. 1. My perspective Reliance on the Perez and Valerie cases is misplaced. The Perez case ruling was compelled by the US Constitution (First Amendment privacy rights) and U.S. Supreme Court cases on the right to interracial marriage, procreation (and whose decision to have children) were fundamental, constitutionally protected interests. These interests are also protected in the California Constitution. Thus, they are also within the concept of liberty, protected against arbitrary restrictions, by the Fourteenth Amendment. However, the strict scrutiny applies, if at all, to those situations in which it is an unalterable state of a person (race, color, sex, national origin, or religion). Whether to have sex with the same sex, or the other sex is not unalterable; it is a choice of the individual, thus not a fundamental right. In fact, current thinking from various sources suggests that there are “breeders” and “non-breeders”. Biologically speaking, procreation occurs between heterosexuals in an act of begetting or generating, whereas mere fornication by breeders or non-breeders is incapable of producing offspring. And that difference is substantive. The constitution does not require things which are different - in fact or opinion - to be treated in law as though they were the same.' Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Ry. v. Browning, 310 U.S. 362; followed in Skinner v. State Of Okl. Ex Rel. Williamson, 316 U.S. 535 (1942). Because the fundamental purpose and nature of the acts performed by breeders and non-breeders are in fact different, Justice Baxter’s opinion is the correct

one. The Court ought to have given due respect to the legislative difference in treatment. Finally, “We the People of the United States …” are the sovereignty, with the right to form society as it chooses. Preamble; 10th Amendment; Scott v. Sanford, 60 U.S. (19 How.) 404 (1857). The reservation of “marriage” to breeders is rational, and furthers a legitimate interest of society, promotion of child birth, to perpetuate society. (Preamble - secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity). Therefore the court ought to deny the petition, or after hearing find that the adoption of Proposition 8 is a legitimate exercise of power by the People. We are indeed at cross-roads. We have reached a point that if those in control have their way, they can claim there are too many people on the planet (population control). See, 1984, by H.G. Wells. If that is the intended future course of human history, it must be rejected. We bear in mind that every non-breeder came into existence by the act of breeders. Yes, they are humans and entitled to equal protection and fundamental rights; however, they are not entitled to a label that does not apply. Nor should anyone be concerned that I cry against a non-plausible future: look at the restrictions on birth as they exist in China today, and the social problems it has cast. Send not for whom the constitution secures the blessings of liberty. It secures the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

CHUCK’S CORNER - THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS STORY -
CHUCK CUNY, PGK
The Annunciation, Visitation and Nativity are the first three Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. These three chronicle the introduction of Mary, a young Jewish woman chosen to become the mother of the Messiah; John, the precursor of Christ; and the entrance of the God-man into the world. These three can be viewed as the heart of the Christmas story.
Christmas, the coming of Christ into the world, essentially begins with the angel Gabriel announcing (Annunciation) to Mary that she is to become the mother of Jesus. Isaiah proclaimed, "Open up you heavens and rain down a savior. Let the clouds water the earth and let salvation spring up.” In shock, Mary asked, “How is this to happen?” In the answer, the Angel says, "The Holy Spirit will overshadow you and the power of the Most High will come upon you.” This taking on flesh is called the Incarnation and becomes the culmination of the foreshadowing by Isaiah some seven centuries earlier. In the mind of the Hebrew people, the spirit brings the clouds and from the clouds comes the life-giving rain. The Incarnation transcends human understanding and so the beautiful imagery is given of Mary being overshadowed by the cloud of the Holy Spirit and life-giving power raining down a savior. The Annunciation comes on March 25, nine months before the Nativity. Mary, at that time, is living in the small town of Nazareth near her espoused husband Joseph. The Angel continues with the incredible message, “Your very elderly cousin Elizabeth has conceived a son. She who is barren (her womb is dead) is now in her sixth month (A foreshadowing of the resurrection from the tomb). Know you that nothing is impossible with God”. Hearing that her elderly cousin Elizabeth is miraculously with child, Mary determines to visit her, a three-day journey (about seventy-five miles.) She would need to bring a beast of burden, grain and probably a milking animal for drink. She would also have her dog for protection from wild animals. While the scriptures are silent, early writers tell us that Joseph, her protector, accompanied and assisted her. When Mary meets Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s unborn child leaps in her womb. This is the precursor who baptized Jesus, the one Mark describes as the lion roaring out in the desert, “Make way the coming of the Lord.” They remain in Hebron helping the elderly Elizabeth for three months until the birth of the Baptist. They then took their leave and make their way back to the small town of Nazareth. When Mary returns, her pregnancy is becoming obviously and will be accused of sex outside of marriage. If found guilty, she will be stoned to death in a public execution. Joseph doubts the angel’s visit, but then Gabriel also visits Joseph. He then accepts Mary as his wife. In the meanwhile, Herod has decreed that every man must return to the place of his birth to register for a census. Even though Mary is far advanced in her pregnancy, she decided to journey with her husband some sixty-five miles to the small town of Bethlehem near Jerusalem. “And thou Oh Bethlehem, are not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a Ruler, that shall rule my people Israel.” was written by Micah prophet seven centuries earlier. When they reached Bethlehem, they had no lodging. The lodgings at that time were large open courts where both man and animal would recline for the night, certainly not a fit place for an expectant mother. An innkeeper offered an animal shelter for them. “And she brought forth her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn….And the angel said to them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord" For two thousand years men have celebrated this birth. But for many, it is celebrated in the glitter, lights and traditions borrowed from a pagan past. But for Christians, the celebration again comes in the new Christ-Mass. And so this is the heart of Christmas story, the new coming of Christ in the Christmas Mass. On behalf of my fellow Knights and our Families, we wish you all a blessed Christmas. VOCATION PRAYER: Have you read the news today — the “good news” of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and son of Mary who was born for us and for our salvation. The word gospel literally means good news! The joy of Christmas is an eternal joy, a joy that no one can take from us because it is the joy of Jesus Christ himself made present in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us (see Romans 5:2-5). The Lord gives us a supernatural joy which no pain nor sorrow can diminish, and which neither life nor death can take away. Do you know the joy of your salvation in Jesus Christ? CALENDAR OF EVENTS
