PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

2011-2012 Outlook The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team will look to build on a historic 2010-2011 season as it enters its fifth year in the Division I transition and its fourth year as a member of the Big South Conference in 2011-2012. The Blue Hose return 10 members from last year’s team that went a Division I-era best 9-20 overall and 5-11 in Big South play. PC also welcomes three newcomers to the squad and expects the freshmen trio to make a valuable contribution during an ambitious 29-game schedule. “We feel good about the foundation we’ve set and the progress we’ve made in the past couple years,” said head coach Ronny Fisher. “We’re excited about the upcoming year. We’re returning our top five scorers and our top four in rebounding from last year, so we’ll be bringing back players who can do a lot on the floor.” PC entered the season last year with one of the youngest teams in Division I, with just three players with more than two years of collegiate experience. The youth movement thrived, however, as current sophomore Karlee Taylor earned a selection to the Big South Conference All-Freshman Team and

12

PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ranked second on the team in points per game, averaging 6.9 per contest. Look for team toughness on the defensive end, as PC led the conference in three-point defense (.262) and ranked second in scoring defense (56.8 average points per game) last season. The team also finished the year ranked second in rebounding defense, holding opponents to 35.7 rebounds per game while collecting 36 per game to rank third in rebounding margin. Senior Kristen Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio) leads the team as PC’s lone fourth-year player. Stevens scored an impressive 5.8 points per game last year, ranking fourth on the Blue Hose. The senior also ranked second in the Big South for three-point field goal percentage, knocking down treys at a .379 clip. The team’s rebounding prowess comes in part from its strong presence in the post. Leading scorer and rebounder Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) returns for her junior year as does Shonda Burnside (Gray Court, S.C.). Pietrowski, the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year in 2009, averaged 10.7 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game ranked third in the conference in field goal percentage (.517). Burnside average 5.6 points per game and 3.2 rebounds and scored 19 points against Gardner-Webb.

Sophomores Megan Schaff (Ellicott City, Md.) joins juniors Olivia Towers-Solis (Dacula, Ga.) and Chelsea Parker (Asheville, N.C.) in rounding out the returning forwards. Each player saw significant action last year and Parker can look to build on a season in which she started 12 games and collected 10 rebounds against Winthrop. Opponents will have to contend with a strong corps in the backcourt as well. Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.) and Karlee Taylor enter their sophomore seasons while juniors Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Devin Fothergill (Somerset, Ky.) look to improve on impressive sophomore campaigns as well. Smith averaged 4.1 points per game last year and recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds against Gardner-Webb. Taylor ranked second on the team in scoring (6.9 points per game) and played 26 minutes per game en route to her All-Freshman Team selection. David serves as one of the team’s most versatile student-athletes. Averaging 6.4 points per game, David also came up big on the glass with 4.9 rebounds per game—second on the team—and ranked seventh in the conference in steals, with 1.7 per game. Fothergill also returns for her third year in a PC uniform. The sophomore saw action in 28 contests and will provide more veteran leadership for the young squad. Three freshman join the team in Noelle Carter (Neptune, N.J.), Keyonna Allen (Forest Park, Ga.) and Kasey Hobbie (Spring Lake, N.J.). Hobbie comes to PC as a shooting guard that helped Red Bank Catholic High School to a 17-8 record and a trip to the sectional semifinals her senior year. “Hobbie is a tremendous shooter and she should stretch the defense with her ability to shoot the basketball,” said Fisher. Allen will contribute to the PC forward corps. A Wendy’s High School Heisman Finalist at Forest Park, Ga., Allen earned First Team All-Region honors as a junior and helped Forest Park to a state runner-up finish as a senior. “Allen is great athlete who can score on the block and should add much need athleticism in the post,” said Fisher. Carter will provide a presence on the wing after helping Neptune High School to a B-North Championship, Shore Conference Championship and the

Central Jersey Group III Championship during her final two years at the school. “Carter brings size and athleticism to the perimeter for us and can really get the ball to the basket,” said Fisher. “All three freshmen should challenge for playing time immediately.” The Blue Hose will find themselves tested this season while testing opponents in 29 games this season, including 14 at Templeton Arena. PC will play contests at North Carolina, UNC Charlotte, South Carolina and Alabama for four of 11 non-conference games. The Blue Hose also host Furman in PC’s home opener at Templeton Arena. PC opens the season on November 11 at Charlotte before returning home to host Furman on November 15. This year sees PC play 18 Big South Conference game with the re-addition of Campbell to the league. With a strong returning foundation and key additions, the Blue Hose look for a bright future built on hard work and dedication. “The big key for us is to take the next step and be competitive in our league and get better every day,” said Fisher.

FISHER

Fourth Year • Furman ‘90 Ronny Fisher is in his fourth season as Presbyterian College’s head women’s basketball coach. He is the sixth person to take the reigns in the program’s 32-year history. He leads the team in its fourth year of Division I play and third as a member of the Big South Conference. In 2010-2011, Fisher led the Blue Hose to program-best marks since joining Division I and the Big South Conference. The team’s 9-20 overall tally and 5-11 record in league play marked the team’s best campaign since 2005-2006. Fisher’s guidance also helped Karlee Taylor earn a Big South Conference All-Freshman Team selection. The Blue Hose set a number of benchmarks in 20102011. PC held an opponent to less than 40 points for only the seventh time since 1990 when the Blue Hose broke a 48-game road losing streak with a 51-38 win over South Carolina State. PC’s five Big South Conference wins also marked the highest win total since joining the Big South in 2008-2009. The Blue Hose played competitively against several non-conference foes including Virginia Tech, Ohio and Clemson. In 2009-10, Fisher’s squad defied expectations by posting three Big South victories with triumphs over Coastal Carolina, UNC Asheville and Winthrop. The team improved upon its win total from the previous year and even took regular season Big South regular season Champion GardnerWebb to overtime. He had five student-athletes selected to

the BIg South Presidential honor roll including three starters. Mariah Pietrowski won the Big South Freshman of the Year award and the Blue Hose were given the league’s Sportsmanship Award. Fisher guided the 2008-09 team to a victory over Big South Conference tournament runner-up Gardner-Webb, marking the first league win in Division I play. The team posted its first Division I home win against Colgate on Nov. 24, 2008, by a 62-50 score. The squad doubled its win total from the previous season while also posting a strong 2.95 GPA in the classroom. Fisher’s 2008-09 team will go down in the school’s record book as the first Blue Hose program to garner the Big South Sportsmanship Award. Fisher took the PC women’s coaching position after working with PC’s men’s basketball program for 11 years. He was the associate head coach for the 2007-08 season under head men’s coach Gregg Nibert, after serving as the assistant coach from 1990-1993 and 2000-2007. The men’s team tallied 142 wins when Fisher rejoined the staff in 2000. With his assistance PC earned two trips to the NCAA Division II tournament (2003, 2006). The 2002-

Sacrifice. 2003 squad registered a program-tying 27 wins and were runners-up for the Food Lion/SAC Tournament title. The Blue Hose earned a bid to the national tournament where they defeated Columbus State (71-59) and Shaw University (77-58) to advance to the “Sweet Sixteen,” the farthest the program had ever gone in the postseason. Fisher was with the team when it returned to the NCAA Division II tournament three years later. After going 25-10 and finishing second in the Food Lion/SAC Tournament, PC beat Armstrong Atlantic, 73-67, in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament before losing to Ga. College & State University in the second round. The Fairview, N.C., native aided Nibert as the program began its transition to Division I in 2007. The team recorded its first win at the Division I level over Radford (62-60) on Dec. 1, 2007 in the friendly confines of the Templeton Center. The Blue Hose finished a perfect 5-0 on their home court. During Fisher’s first term with the Blue Hose, he worked with the team as they advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 1993. PC racked up a school-record 27-5 season and earned a win over Mars Hill (71-56) in the NAIA District 26 Playoffs en route to the national tournament. The team lost to Georgetown (Ky.), 92-79, but went down as the first team in school history to travel to the tournament. Fisher handled numerous responsibilities under Nibert, including acting as both the academic and recruiting coordinator. On the hardwood, he worked with all the players but played a special role coaching post players. He has been able to draw on those experiences as he continues the transition from assistant to head coach.

Between stints at Presbyterian, Fisher held positions at North Greenville University and Conway H.S. He worked under Crusaders’ coach David Conrady for two seasons (19982000). The staff worked to build a solid program that upset NAIA’s second-ranked Georgetown College in Fisher’s final year at North Greenville. Fisher assumed the head coaching position of the boy’s basketball team at Conway H.S. in Conway, S.C. in 1993. At 25 years of age, he was the youngest class 4-A high school head coach in the state. In his first year, he led a team that had won two games in 1992-93 to 17 wins and the Tigers’ first trip to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. He compiled a 47-52 record in four years at Conway. Fisher got his start in college basketball while serving as a student assistant coach under former Presbyterian Coach Butch Estes at Furman University. He earned a B.A. in physical education in 1990. He graduated from A.C. Reynolds H.S. in Fairview, N.C., where he was a multi-sport athlete who played baseball, basketball and golf. His father Bob and brother, Rob still reside in the area. Fisher is married to the former Julie Dickert, of Taylors, S.C. Julie is a former basketball player at Charleston Southern University who played for the Bucs from 1990-93. They reside in Clinton with their son, Harrison, daughter Sydney and son Jake. They are active members of Cornerstone Baptist Church.

2010-11 Women's Basketball Presbyterian College Combined Team Statistics (2010) All games

2010-11 Statistics

2010-11 Season Recap The 2010-11 season was full of highlights for the Presbyterian College women’s basketball team. The Blue Hose defense put a scare into most opponents, starting with Virginia Tech in the season opener and right up until the finale with Liberty. PC went 9-19 in the season and 5-10 in the Big South to finish the year in a tie for sixth place. Coach Ronny Fisher won four road games, breaking the 48-game losing streak away from the Templeton Center and eclipsing the cumulative road-win total from the previous four seasons combined. Karlee Taylor earned PC another Big South postseason award by being named to the Big South All-Freshman Team. As the season progressed, she became an important part of the Blue Hose offense. On March 1, Taylor was named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for her part in the team’s 1-1 record the previous week against two of the League’s top-three teams. The freshman guard was one of only four women to earn the honor during the entire season. Amanda Mills earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic team for a third-straight season. She has maintained a 3.57 GPA while double-majoring in biology and history. In only three seasons with the Blue Hose, Mills sank 153 triples to rank her third all-time at PC in career three-pointers. Also, her career FT % at .801 (125-156) ranks first for the program. The Blue Hose started their season with a good showing on the road against Virginia Tech. PC held a 34-32 lead over the Hokies at the half, but late turnovers and cold shooting led to a 59-52 defeat. Kristen Stevens and Taylor each had nine points to lead the team. PC returned home and earned its first victory over the year with a 70-42 decision against Erskine. Shonda Burnside set a Division I team-record the following game, a 43-38 defeat to North Carolina Central, by blocking five shots. The team also set a record with 13 steals. The road game against South Carolina State proved to be a historic day for the Blue Hose. Not only did their 51-38 win break a string of 48 consecutive road-game losses, it was only the seventh time since 1990 that the Blue Hose held an opponent to less than 40 points. Dria David recorded the first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. PC played well over the next string of games, but came up short against Furman, USC Upstate, Clemson, NC State, and South Carolina. With their overall record 2-8, the Blue Hose gained exciting back-to-back wins over Campbell and Coastal Carolina. Mills drained a three pointer with 5.4 seconds remaining against the Camels to earn the two-point victory. Against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, PC outscored the Chanticleers, 32-12, in the second half and held them to just 36 points total, marking the first time since 1985-86 that PC held two opponents to less than 40 points in the same season. The next three games were close defeats to Liberty, Savannah State, and Charleston Southern. Coach Fisher and the women’s team found their first Big South Conference road win by defeating the Winthrop Eagles 55-40 on January 17, 2011. Taylor had 14 points on a perfect 5-5 night from the

46

floor. Chelsea Parker contributed seven points and 10 rebounds, while David chipped in seven points and eight assists. After the win, PC fell on the road to Radford (45-49) before losing to Gardner-Webb and then High Point. On January 31, the Blue Hose found the first of two victories over UNC Asheville. PC defeated the Bulldogs at home in a close 53-51 game. Mills’ outside shooting proved useful, with the senior guard draining a pair of treys in the final 1:45 of the game. A defeat on the road to last place Coastal Carolina did not keep the Blue Hose from rebounding to earn back-toback road wins over Savannah State and UNC Asheville. PC avenged an overtime loss against the Tigers by taking a 5447 win on February 7. Taylor led all scorers with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Five days later, PC took an impressive 74-68 win over the Bulldogs in a locally televised game to sweep a Big South opponent for the first time. Taylor scored her collegiate-best 21 points to go along with eight assists, seven rebounds, and one steal to lead the team. Mariah Pietrowski recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. PC was able to grab only one more victory over the remaining six games, dropping three by less than 10 points each. The highlight was a 73-65 victory at home over the eventual Big South Conference tournament champion Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs went 9-1 in their final 10 conference games, with PC handing them their only defeat. PC also played well in the season finale against the regular season champions, Liberty, before falling 40-49. Mills ended her career with 722 points to rank first for the Division I era of PC basketball. Her 153 career three-pointers ranks third all-time for the Blue Hose, and her career free throw percentage (.801) ranks fifth. Stevens sank 48 three pointers during the season to lead the team and rank sixth in the Big South. Her success rate from afar (.379) ranked second in the conference and was above 40 percent for most of the season. Pietrowski saw success inside, ranking third in the Big South for FG percentage (.517), eleventh in rebounding (6.2) and 16th for scoring (10.7). Also drawing attention in the conference, David finished eighth in the Big South for FT percentage (.685), seventh for steals (1.72) and 12th for assists (2.31). As the season progressed, Sherece Smith also made a name for herself. Despite not ranking high on any category, the freshman guard recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the home win over GWU. In the ten games leading up to the season finale, Smith had averaged 29.0 minutes, 6.7 points, and 6.2 rebounds while PC went 4-6. Against the Flames in the season finale, she put in 10 points to lead the team. Many other players showed improvements throughout the season and contributed to the team’s overall success. Most importantly, the team finished the fall semester with a 3.37 cumulative GPA, continued to volunteer within the community, and led by example.

Dr. John V.

GRIFFITH

Director of Athletics • Second Year

College president • 14th Year

Dr. John V. Griffith, a 1969 graduate of Dickinson College, begins his 13th year as President of Presbyterian College. Griffith became the 16th president of PC on Jan. 1, 1998, replacing Dr. Kenneth B. Orr who retired after guiding the college for 18 years. Griffith was inaugurated on Oct. 10, 1998, as part of Homecoming festivities. Griffith continues to guide Presbyterian College through the new strategic plan which will take PC through the first decade of the 21st century. Griffith helped the institution celebrate its 125th anniversary during the academic year in 2005-06. Griffith came to PC after spending his previous 20 years of service at several colleges in different capacities. He began his work at the college level in 1977, when he was hired as a lecturer at the University of Syracuse. Prior to his time at Syracuse, Griffith served as a chaplain at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass., from 1972-76 and as a minister at the Village Baptist Church in Sherbune, N.Y., from 1976-78. He served as a lecturer at Syracuse University for one year before accepting a job at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he was an associate director for Project Choice, a $150,000 project on student consumer protection. He moved on to Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., in 1979, where he was hired as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and a member of the faculty. He served in this capacity for the next six years before being named Vice President for Institutional Advancement in 1985. During the next four years, Griffith helped develop Project MATCH, a $150,000 project directed at intellectual development and college admissions. While at Davidson, he was also instrumental in the development of Love of Learning, an intervention program directed at African-American youth. Griffith continued his work at Davidson College until 1989, when he was named president of Arkansas College, a private liberal arts college in Batesville, Ark., which later changed its name to Lyon College. He served as president of Lyon, a PCUSA-related school, for eight years before coming to PC. Throughout his career, Griffith has served on numerous committees and councils, including the executive committee of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities and the Governor’s Advisory Board of Technology and Telecommunications for the State of Arkansas. He is an active board member of the Laurens County Economic Development Corporation and was honored as its 2003 Man of the Year. He is an honorary board member of the Upstate Alliance, and a gubernatorial appointment to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He also serves on the board of directors for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Griffith graduated cum laude from Dickinson College in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in Religion, receiving the Hoffstatder Award as the most outstanding senior. He later graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1972 with a Master’s of Divinity degree, being named valedictorian and baccalaureate speaker of his class. Griffith received his Ph.D. degree in Intellectual Development from

the University of Syracuse in 1980. He and his wife, the former Nancy Shell, are the parents of two sons: Matthew, a graduate of Davidson College, and Chris, a graduate of Dickinson College.

Brian Reese, formerly Vanderbilt University’s associate director of student athletics, has been named the new director of athletics at Presbyterian College. PC president Dr. John Griffith made the announcement on Monday, April 5, following a national search that attracted more than 80 candidates. “I am enormously pleased to announce that Brian Reese has agreed to serve as our new director of athletics,” Griffith said. “His experience at Vanderbilt underscores the importance we place on academics for our student-athletes and we believe he will be a perfect fit for our community.” Reese has served at Vanderbilt since 2002, when he first joined the school’s athletics staff as director of football operations. In 2004, he was named director of sports operations at the university before being named associate director of student-athletics in 2008. Prior to joining the athletics staff at Vanderbilt, Reese was the head athletic trainer at Furman from 1995 to 2002 and assistant director of sports medicine at the Citadel from 1989 to 1995.

He is a 1986 graduate of Grand Valley State College in Allendale, Mich., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He also earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma in 1989. Reese has personal ties to PC; his wife attended PC while his brothers-in-law - Michael and William - were respective members of the Blue Hose football and baseball teams. During visits to campus both with family and as part of his job, Reese said he felt attuned to how special a place PC is. “Presbyterian College has a great tradition of putting academics first for student-athletes,” he said. “When the job opened, I went after it knowing this was a good environment to live and work in. After meeting people here - the coaches, student-athletes, faculty, and the community - I knew this is where I wanted to be. There is so much potential here for us to have great success in Division I and doing it with honor. I’m grateful and humbled to be selected.” Reese follows Dr. William “Bee” Carlton, who served his alma mater as AD for six years. Reese and his wife, Tricia, have three children.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid -- receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its firstever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 15 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2012-13 with seven members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 11 member institutions comprise the 28-year League in 2011-12. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, plus the return of charter member Campbell University this year. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport.

During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, more than 240 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship six times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had four NFL Draft picks, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships - the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last seven years - including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifthyear of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run), Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. Last season, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team - one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won four PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007 and tied for runner-up at the 2011 Open Championship. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its 27 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has a record number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last two years.

PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

We Are Presbyterian College Presbyterian College is located in Clinton, South Carolina, a community of 10,000 nestled in upstate South Carolina. The college’s beautiful 240-acre campus and a national reputation for academic excellence attract 1,200 students representing 30 states and eleven foreign countries. International study programs include China, Oxford, Spain, and Cuba. The distinguished sons and daughters of Presbyterian College are outstanding leaders in business and industry, education, athletics, journalism, medicine, the military, the Church, and public service. Presbyterian College, home of the fighting Blue Hose, continues to live its motto of “While we live, we serve,” producing servant leaders for the world today. PC was born of the dreams of a humble pastor determined to restore a territory plundered by war. In 1864 22-year-old Rev. William Plumer Jacobs arrived in Clinton to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Eight years later Jacobs and the church founded the Clinton High School Association to provide the young people of Laurens County a place to receive a Christian-based, liberal arts education. In 1880 the Clinton High School Association became first Clinton College, and then in 1890 the Presbyterian College of South Carolina. Coeducational instruction occurred from the start. In keeping with its goal to produce graduates of high moral character, Presbyterian College adopted an honor code, a student-run system still flourishing today, to govern students’ academic and social lives. Today’s PC curriculum includes international programs, internships, and unique cultural and arts opportunities. New facilities for living (Senior Hall and Carol International House), athletic play (new Bailey Memorial Stadium, Martin Soccer Stadium), study (Lassiter Science Hall, the Arnold Archives and Thomason Library), and infrastructure support (information technology) benefit the PC and Clinton community alike. New professorships have strengthened the already strong faculty.

The college is home to six South Carolina Professors of the Year, more than twice the number of any public or private institution in the state. Financial aid resources insure that qualified students have access to a PC education. Blue Hose sports have always made history. In 1943 PC football coach Lonnie McMillan gave the Clemson football stadium its famous nickname, Death Valley. The Scotsman Club, formerly known as the Walter Johnson Club, was created in 1937. Its purpose still today is to provide athletic scholarships for young men and women who excel in both sports venues and classrooms. In the 1960s PC’s intercollegiate tennis program was ranked number 2 in the nation. PC provides the community a rich cultural life through lectures, art exhibits, concerts and theatrical performances. The college’s library and intramural facilities serve local residents, while college faculty and staff serve on many local boards. The college is involved in local economic development, recognizing the importance of its roll as a Clinton citizen and significant employer. Presbyterian College holds fast to its core mission and high standards of integrity, celebrating its motto: “Dum Vivimus Servimus,” or “While we live, we serve.” Service to community and each other are hallmarks of faculty and students alike, and PC has one of the oldest student volunteer organizations in the country in Student Volunteer Services (SVS). Presbyterian College is also proud of its service to country. More than 1,000 PC graduates served in World War II, and today’s alumni ranks include a Medal of Honor recipient and more than 15 generals. In 2007, after 15 years in NCAA Division II, the college entered its first transitional year of membership into NCAA Division I. Today, PC fields 15 competitive teams in men’s and women’s sports and is in its fifth transitional season. PC is a member of the Big South Conference.
