Message from the President
Message from the President Dearest Friends and Supporters of Maitri India, As the year 2012 is drawing to a close, I would like to convey my appreciation and congratulations to each one of you – thanks to your support, we have made remarkable progress in the past six months from April-October. To begin with, Maitri was featured on Aamir Khan’s popular television show on social issues, for our work with the destitute widows in Vrindavan. We heartily thank you, not only for enthusiastically watching the show but also for your support and contributions towards the cause. It is our pleasure to inform you that Maitri proposes to build a new ashram (shelter) which would house 100 widows. In addition we are carrying forward our work in providing nutritious midday meals, health facilities and other essentials to more than 500 widow mothers. In addition, this September saw the successful launch of our newest project, Adhikaar, to promote citizenship rights for rickshaw-pullers in Ranchi, Jharkhand. We are eagerly looking forward to compile and share the feasibility study report for this project by March 31, 2013. Closer home in Delhi, our Project Awaaz for migrant workers, and Homeless Resource Center (HRC) for homeless populations have also been working towards registering 4000 migrant workers with voter cards. The HRC is ready to conduct winter night rescue operations for th homeless people. We are also preparing for our upcoming 4 annual conference on Violence Against Women in March 2013. This holiday season, Maitri is participating in an online fundraising campaign on GlobalGiving to raise a minimum of $5000 from 40 donors to provide 500 widows with warm blankets. We request you to not only support us in this campaign, but also look forward to your continued support in all of our upcoming and ongoing endeavors. On behalf of the Maitri family, I wish you a very joyful 2013! Best wishes,
Lt Gen Bhopinder Singh (Retd) President
Statement of Purpose

Statement of Purpose Maitri (Sanskrit): Loving-kindness, compassion and friendship Maitri is a developmental humanitarian NGO based out of New Delhi, India which was founded in 2005 by Gen (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh and Winnie Singh. The organization was born out of a felt need to fill in the gaps in awareness about essential health impacting information such as STI’s, HIV/AIDS and TB for the uniformed services and their families. Since 2007, Maitri has expanded its areas of reach through a variety of programmes which include domestic violence awareness, victim support and victim to survivor program (with a special focus on the uniformed services and their families) Maitri also promotes respect, dignity, and support for abandoned elderly widows in Vrindavan (Mathura, India). Some of our other initiatives include improving the health and welfare of vulnerable migrant populations like rickshaw pullers and the homeless, and providing educational opportunities for slum children in Delhi with a nutrition programme. We also organize HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns supported with a voluntary counselling and testing centre. We believe that:
A healthy home is a happy home No woman (least of all a mother) should ever have to live in destitution and humiliation Women have the right to live with respect and dignity even in the sunset years of their lives.
