German Film Festival 2014
WILLKOMMEN! My amazing team at the Goethe-Institut has been busy all year selecting the films we like best for our 2014 Film Festival – those which are close to our hearts, make us feel a bit homesick, and, most importantly, films we can proudly present to enthusiastic audiences in Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin. Even if you are not usually a film person, do come and see how football got started in Germany – the first step on the path leading to the 2014 Football World Cup! There are also a number of special events to enjoy, including Q&A sessions, a Film for Foodies night, an International Co-Production forum, a jazz concert and even a yodelling workshop. We hope you will enjoy our selection and make the most of your chance to watch great, inspiring films – which needed a little help from the Goethe-Institut to find their way to the screens on the other side of the world. Also, here is the place to thank all our wonderful sponsors, without whose support a festival like this would not be possible. Bettina Senff, Director Goethe-Institut New Zealand
WELCOME TO THE 2014 GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 2014 sees the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. From 4th to 28th September you will be able to enjoy 18 new handpicked films in Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin in their original language with English subtitles. Some of the films were introduced at the Berlinale this year. This festival will cover a wide range of topics to illustrate the diversity of modern German cinema such as the division of Germany in the film West, following your dreams of a better life in the western Gold or the fight against prejudice in the film Lessons of a Dream. The opening film will be the 2012 documentary film Sound of Heimat, a film which points out the ambivalent relationship between Germans and German folk music. This film is especially related to New Zealand, because it follows New Zealand saxophonist Hayden Chisholm travelling around Germany, taking a glance at the different ways in which artists interpret “Volksmusik” and disproving several prejudices about this kind of music. Enjoy the German Film Festival! Dr. Anne-Marie Schleich, German Ambassador

OPENING NIGHT
SOUND OF HEIMAT – DEUTSCHLAND SINGT!
GERMANY, 2012 Festivals (selection): Audi Festival of German Films Australia 2013 Directors: Arne Birkenstock, Jan Tengeler Cinematography: Marcus Winterbauer Editors: Volker Gehrke, Katharina Schmitt With: Hayden Chisholm, Loni Kuisle and many others
What happens when a saxophonist from New Zealand embarks on a search for the roots and living traditions of German folk music? In this exuberant documentary, Kiwi horn blower Hayden Chisholm meets musicians and singers young and old, traditional and modern, eccentric and ultra-serious, all of whom are united by their passion for music that embodies the quintessential German notion of Heimat (homeland). Filled with delightful detours into remote places and high-spirited collaborations in which Hayden brings his instrument into the mix, Sound of Heimat is about much more than music. In the course of his travels, Hayden encounters not only the Germany that embraces the sounds of Heimat with a deep sense of national pride, but also the Germany that dismisses such music and its attendant emotions as irrelevant nostalgia. FINSTERWORLD
The darker side of human interaction is revealed in this drama about a group of people that seem to be pursued by bad luck. We meet: a police officer in a bear costume; a documentary filmmaker who has trouble finding an appropriate story; a pedicurist who works in an intricate fashion with his older female patient; a history student whose visit to a concentration camp turns unpleasant; and a wild man training a raven in the woods. As the individual storylines develop, a decidedly dark humour pervades the film, with a definitely warped view of human existence. Amongst a huge cast is noted actress Corinna Harfouch. Who exactly is Katrine Evensen? For the past 20 years Katrine has lived in Norway after being raised in East Germany. Now it is 1990, the Berlin Wall has come down and Katrine’s identity comes into question. As previously classified documents are opened and buried stories come to light it is revealed that Katrine is the ‘war child’ of a Norwegian mother and a soldier from Germany‘s occupying army. Asked to give testimony at a trial against the Norwegian state on behalf of the war children, Katrine resists, but why? From its arresting opening sequence to the end play of Katrine’s dangerous game, Two Lives is a compelling meditation on identity, morality and family. A fine cast includes Norwegian great Liv Ullman as Katrine’s mother. Text: Richard Kuipers, Film Critic, Variety Image: Beta Cinema

Summer 1898. Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush. Emily Meyer joins a group of seven German-American immigrants embarking on the long journey to newly discovered gold fields. Brought together by a shady businessman’s advertisement, the members of the group put it all on the line to change their miserable lives. Full of hope, the prospectors begin their journey. But they soon lose track as the supposedly marked path disappears before their eyes. Investment bankers are the real “Masters of the Universe”, not politicians, armies nor even countries. In economic powerhouse Germany, a top banker gives a disturbing insider’s account of his emotions, motivations and predictions, revealing a parallel universe of extreme income and merciless pressure. We see a system disconnecting bankers from the outside world, leaving them unable to reflect on their work. Less a portrait of an individual than of an unchecked culture where the lure of staggering profits eliminates ethics, Master of the Universe subtly exposes the pernicious effects of deregulation and does so in an ingeniously cinematic manner. Germany 1874. A young teacher, Konrad Koch, is hired to teach English at a strictlyrun school for boys by a reform-minded headmaster, in order to breathe fresh air into his musty institution. Everything that the students know about England is common prejudices handed down from one generation to the next. To stir up some enthusiasm for the foreign language, Koch resorts to rather unusual means and introduces his students to a curious sport that has come across from Britain: football. Koch’s unconventional ways soon make him enemies: influential parents, local dignitaries and, above all, his colleagues, who only believe in Prussian drills and discipline. They all want to get rid of Koch at any price, but the students stand united by their teacher. Text: German Films / Goethe-Institut Image: Beta Cinema © Maria Krumwiede

Somebody built a goddamn school gym directly over the stolen cash his girlfriend buried for him. And now ex-con Zeki Müller has no choice but to pass himself off as a substitute teacher at Goethe Comprehensive School, thus providing the German educational system with one more problem: the craziest teacher of all time. At night, Zeki digs secretly for his loot. During the day, he uses drastic yet effective methods to bring the unruly kids of class 10B back on track. Although his prim and proper fellow teacher Lisi Schnabelstedt condemns the unorthodox pedagogical approach taken by her new “colleague“, she nevertheless finds herself falling in love with Zeki and even helps him dig up something more valuable than cash… the remains of his own moral integrity. Thus Nick is hired by the family to look after the old man. The partnership of convenience between these two individualists soon develops its own momentum. Curt sees in Nick a fascinating new research subject and makes him undergo an absurd therapy. Nick senses in Curt’s phenomenal library a unique opportunity to consolidate his finances. Max is an orphan who has been hired out to a farmer’s family. His foster parents treat him like a workhorse while their son seizes every opportunity to humiliate him. Playing the accordion is the one thing that is entirely his. When the new teacher stands up for Max, it only makes a bad situation worse. The only thing preserving his will to survive is his friendship with Berteli, who was also taken on to work at the farm. Max dreams of Argentina with her: a fantasy world, where allegedly even hayforks are made of silver. Text: Swiss Films Image: C-Films

THE DARK VALLEY DAS FINSTERE TAL
When the snows come, darkness descends on the valley. It’s the late nineteenth century; a stranger arrives in this remote community of alpine farmers. Ostensibly a photographer, he announces his desire to stay until winter is over. But this reticent observer finds himself confronted with the deep distrust of an unwittingly close-knit community. When the youngest son of the wealthy Brenner farmer has a fatal accident whilst cutting wood, and his brother is found dead in the mill stream soon after, the old order in the valley begins to unravel. But there are things you just can’t talk about, even if you can’t forget them. Text: Berlin Film Festival 2014 Image: Films Distribution

LIFESWAP Lifeswap is a meeting point for Kiwis, Germans and their friends for anyone who has ever said quietly to him or herself: “That is so German” or “Typisch neuseeländisch!” The framing device for every episode is a monthly Skype conversation between Life Swappers Duncan from Wellington and Jörg from Münster, featuring flashbacks to memorable moments since they last spoke. The human beings behind Jörg and Duncan, animation artist, Steffen Kreft, and script writer, William Connor, are the creative team that produces Lifeswap, a gentle and witty exploration of the many weird and wonderful clashes, harmonies, misunderstandings and hilarities that seem to occur when Germans and New Zealanders come together. This GoetheInstitut project is enthusiastically supported by the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. To watch all episodes online go to www.goethe.de/nz Rating: tbc

EPISODE 3: THE WINTER DENIERS (3:37 minutes) Jörg battles with winter chills, damp and lack of insulation in New Zealand, while Duncan learns about Germans and their slippers. EPISODE 4: CHANGE! URINE STINKS! (AKA CHANGE YOUR INSTINCTS!) (4:00 minutes) Jörg is surprised at how prudish New Zealanders are about nudity and Duncan is challenged not only by the odd design of German toilets but also by the movement to encourage men to sit down to pee.
