VINCENT BEZUIDENHOUT ‘FAIL DEADLY’ OPENING 07/07/2016 18H30, RUNS UNTIL 29/07/2016 GOETHEONMAIN, 245 MAIN STREET, MABONENG PRECINCT In Fail Deadly, artist Vincent Bezuidenhout investigates apartheid South Africa’s clandestine nuclear weapons program. According to Bezuidenhout, “During the 1970s and 80s the government built six atom bombs in complete secrecy, which was swiftly disbanded as the apartheid system crumbled. Incorporating and referencing strategies which include photojournalism, image appropriation, landscape photography and archival documentation, Fail Deadly critically reflects on the limitations of these approaches in artistic practice. Exploiting the aesthetics of research, rather than its results, I construct a narrative that allows me to expand on and recontextualize the facts and theories surrounding the events. Using absence, omission and cover-ups, I examine elements of history and power, while reflecting on my own identity within the South African historiography.”

Kaddish for a Friend is a warm tale about an unlikely friendship between two lonely, displaced characters. Alexander is an 84 year-old Russian Jewish war veteran who is desperate to remain living independently in his Berlin flat. Palestinian teenager Ali’s family arrive from a refugee camp in Lebanon and, to gain acceptance from his new peers, Ali agrees to break-in to his next-door neighbour’s flat.
When Alexander comes back to his ransacked home, he recognises Ali and, to avoid being deported, Ali’s family send him back to repair the damage. As they work side by side, the relationship between the feisty pair flits between mutual dislike, understanding and finally friendship, when they realise that the fragile existence of each depends in a large part on the other. Inspired by a true story, Moscow-born, German director Leo Khasin’s 2012 debut is a stirring, coming-of-age story that shows just how hard unlearning prejudice can be. © Glasgow Film English subtitles. CON-STRUCTION CARTEL
OPENING 04/08/2016 18H30, RUNS UNTIL 29/08/2016 GOETHEONMAIN, 245 MAIN STREET, MABONENG PRECINCT The Con is a journalism and art collective, and an “anti-media media platform” based in Johannesburg and Harare. According to its founders, it was created to counteract the South African media’s unchecked and unacknowledged race, gender and class bias. The Con-struction Cartel asks “What is being destroyed when White Capital Builds?” It is a forensic and social investigation of white capital’s anti-competitive behaviour and how that has directly affected the lives of ordinary, poor black South Africans, as well as the country’s developmental agenda, as it moves away from the inequalities of apartheid. By looking at how construction companies in South Africa collude amongst themselves - a methodology which finds its roots during apartheid - The Con aims to examine those aspects of apartheid which retain a strong presence in South Africa.

The exhibition Think Global, Build Social! – Architectures for a Better World explores the theme of social responsibility in contemporary architecture. According to the curator Andres Lepik, “Architecture is currently in a state of crisis: on the one hand there is what is known as ‘starchitecture’ – prestigious projects by acclaimed architects that serve to enhance the image of a few wealthy and politically influential clients – while on the other, there has been a massive rise in the number of building projects carried out in rapidly expanding megacities across Asia, Latin America and Africa with no architectural supervision whatsoever. In addition, an increasing number of people all over the world are living in slum conditions. The crucial question is therefore: what solutions can architecture offer to those segments of the global population that currently have no access to a well-designed environment?” The exhibition was conceived jointly by the Architekturzentrum Wien and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum.

A flirtation with a customer in a boutique leads to Frank’s downfall. He is arrested for fraud and sent to prison. After his release, he again meets Tanja, the woman from the boutique. He is determined to free her from the brothel where she works, but in doing so, he falls back into his old habit as an adulterator. English subtitles. Refreshments will be provided. Renowned South African composer Kevin Volans was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and studied at the University of the Witwatersrand where he was graduated to a Bachelor of Music. Volans went on to study with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel in Cologne. Kevin Volans’ work is regularly performed and broadcast worldwide. A productive collaboration with the Kronos quartet in the 1980s, principally in the field of chamber and orchestral music, led to worldwide recognition of his compositional talent. The Kronos discs, White Man Sleeps and Pieces of Africa broke all records for string quartet disc sales. The Goethe-Institut is proud to invite music lovers to an afternoon with composer Kevin Volans where some of his recent work will be performed by Jill Richards (piano) and Waldo Alexander (violin, viola). The event will also include a discussion about his compositional praxis.

FAK’UGESI FESTIVAL CLOSING PARTY

For the 2016 Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival being held in Braamfontien from 19.08.2016 – 03.09.2016, Berlin based artists and technologists The Constitute will collaborate on a project with Johannesburg-based Create Africa. The collaborative project will bring together South Africa’s hip hop and electronic music artists, local filmmakers lead by Lebo Rasethaba and technologists. The outcome of the collaboration will be performed live at the festival’s closing party. This exciting collaboration was inspired by an earlier hack-a-thon led by Create Africa that used the documentary Future Sounds of Mzanzi (directed by Nthato Mokgata and Lebogang Rasethaba) as a starting point. The event resulted in a number of alternative applications that pushed the boundaries of South African music culture and technology.

GPS OPEN CALL Goethe-Institut Project Space (GPS) is a multi-disciplinary roving project space that follows on GoetheOnMain, which has been based at Arts On Main in Johannesburg from May 2009 and is set to conclude in November 2016.
The deadline for proposals is on 15 October 2016, with GPS project grants awarded for work realized from April to December 2017. Please see our website for application documents and more information.

The new GPS programme will support work realized all over South Africa and encourages production outside of the large metropoles; enabling actors, artists, performers, curators, choreographers, writers, dancers, composers, directors and musicians; to select the space and infrastructure they wish to work with. GPS is envisioned as a non-commercial, artist-centered, roving free platform, designed to support not only the artists and their projects, but also the many structures, platforms and festivals that currently exist and need partnerships of this nature in order to continue their work.
