very music festival is about finding a creative balance - a balance of innovative and established music acts with enthusiastic audiences in a delicious, al fresco setting. I know - I attend and participate in more than twenty different festivals every year, and I’ve had decades of experience seeing how these things work, and when they don’t. The Locus Music Festival - produced by the friendly, music-oriented folks at Bass Culture - know about this balance, and they make the Locus festival work in a way that doesn’t even feel like it’s being produced! The artists they book reveals them to be very informed and cutting-edge in their taste (Laura Mvula! Robert Glasper!) but knowing that they also need to reach a general public. And the various venues - outdoor and indoor - that they have chosen for their concerts show that they know how to make the best use of a beautiful and historic locale like Locorotondo. Locus Music is one festival that I can recommend as a music fan and as a music business professional - and I have.

utti i festival musicali sono alla ricerca di un equilibrio creativo tra l’innovazione e la musica più affermata per rendere il pubblico entusiasta in un ambiente delizioso. Partecipo ed assisto a più di venti festival musicali ogni anno ed ho un’esperienza decennale nell’osservare come funzionano queste cose e quando invece non vanno per il verso giusto. Il Locus Music Festival - prodotto da Bass Culture - mantiene questo equilibrio e tutto funziona alla perfezione con grande naturalezza. Gli artisti coinvolti rivelano gli ottimi gusti musicali di queste persone, così amichevoli e musicoriented, sempre molto ben informate e all’avanguardia (Laura Mvula! Robert Glasper!), ma consapevoli di dover raggiungere anche un pubblico più vasto. I luoghi scelti per i concerti - inoltre - dimostrano come sappiano utilizzare al meglio un centro storico così suggestivo come quello di Locorotondo. Il Locus Festival è uno degli appuntamenti che raccomando sia come appassionato di musica che come professionista - e così ho fatto.

Che cosa ha permesso al Locus Festival di diventare una manifestazione così di successo? “è necessario saper rispettare tre parole chiave perché una manifestazione possa essere in grado di raggiungere un vasto pubblico e attirare così tante persone: qualità, organizzazione e lavoro di squadra. La qualità del prodotto offerto è sicuramente una di queste, la capacità organizzativa è un altro importante elemento, ma alla base di tutto deve esserci la condivisione e il lavoro di squadra. Solo la sinergia tra le varie componenti, tra il pubblico e il privato soprattutto, permette di creare un prodotto di qualità e ben organizzato”.
How has the Locus Festival managed to become such a successful event? “You need to follow three keywords if you want an event to reach a huge audience and attract so many people: and those words are quality, organization and teamwork. The quality of the product on offer fulfills the first condition, the organizational abilities we have are another important element, but at the base of everything is sharing and teamwork. Only by putting together the various components, including the public and the private, can we create a high quality product which is well organized”.
Che cosa c’è da aspettarsi dall’edizione di quest’anno? “L’evento ha raggiunto una rilevanza nazionale e l’edizione di quest’anno è stata presentata nel corso di una conferenza stampa a Milano - culla delle avanguardie artistiche del nostro Paese. La sponsorship ufficiale da parte di Audi dimostra come sia aumentata anche l’attenzione dei finanziatori privati nei confronti del festival e ci aspettiamo anche quest’anno un grande afflusso di pubblico sia italiano che straniero”.
What can we expect from this year’s festival? “This event is now of national importance and this year’s festival was presented in a press conference in Milan – the cradle of the artistic avant-garde in Italy. The official sponsorship from Audi shows that private financers are taking more notice of the festival and this year we expect again a large audience made up of Italians and international visitors”.

Perché? “Come amministrazione comunale abbiamo deciso di non far venir meno la nostra attenzione e il nostro supporto nei confronti di questa realtà perché siamo convinti sia giusto cercare di promuovere al massimo una manifestazione che ha consolidato il proprio
In times of austerity when Councils are cutting their budgets, the Town Council of Locorotondo chose to continue giving significant backing to the Locus Festival. Why is that? “As a Town Council we have decided to maintain our focus and support for this festival because we are convinced that it is right to try to promote as much as possible an event which has consolidated its success over the years and to help it grow even more, rather than try to create new events.”

Insieme a lui, calcherà il palco Gianluca Petrella rinomatissimo trombonista che, al pari di Frahm, è impegnato nell’esplorazione delle sonorità elettroniche e che, per l’occasione, presenterà il suo live show. Non mancheranno ritmi e vibrazioni più dance, grazie a cinque artisti italiani che, dopo aver conquistato la critica e il pubblico nazionali, hanno portato la loro musica al di fuori dei nostri confini. Populous, producer eccellente che col suo live porterà in Valle d’itria ritmi e colori dai cinque continenti, con le tracce dell’acclamatissimo disco “Night Safari”. Godblesscomputers, producer emiliano che presenterà “Plush and Safe”, il nuovo disco che segue l’ottimo “Veleno”. Il simbolo assoluto della nuova ondata italo disco, JOLLY MARE, uno dei pochissimi italiani ammessi alla Red Bull Music Academy. I suoni più oscuri e la cassa più decisa di Zp. aka Z.I.P.P.O, prodotto autoctono che si sta facendo strada sulla scena europea. Mordecai anch’esso prodotto della Valle d’Itria, di stanza a Parigi, con la sua downtempo che tradisce influenze asiatiche/mediorientali. Elita summer sessions expresses the various sides of the musical imagination of the ‘Elita Milan’ company, in a perfect fusion with the artistic programme and the location of the Locus Festival. At 8 pm the market and exhibition space opens with POP UP THE SUNDAY with the tasting of traditional products. The high spot of the event will be Nils Frahm’s exceptional show. Nils is a german musician and composer, from Berlin, recognized by the critics as one of the most sought after pianists on the contemporary European scene. The sound of the piano is mixed with electronic keyboard music to create visionary and tasteful combinations. Using upright and grand pianos, Rhodes fenders and synthesizers, Frahm knocks down musical barriers passing from electronic sounds to classical music. Frahm soon became well known for his live performances. Inspired by the location and by his audience the german musician launches into improvisations of new compositions. The spectators thus become an integral part of his extraordinary live performances. Together with Frahm, Gianluca Petrella will be treading the boards, the very well known trombonist who, like the german, is involved in the exploration of electronic sounds and who will present his own live show for the occasion. There will also be plenty of rhythms and vibrations and dance, thanks to the five Italian artists who, having won over critics and audiences in Italy, have taken their music beyond our borders. There are: Populous, an excellent producer who with his live performance will bring to the Valle d’Itria the rhythms and colours of the five continents, with tracks from his acclaimed disk ‘Night Safari’. Godblesscomputers, a producer from Emilia Romagna who will present ‘Plush and Safe’ his new disk that follows the excellent ‘Veleno’ (Poison). The true symbol of the new wave of Italian disks, Jolly Mare, one of the very Italians admitted to the Red Bull Music Academy. The more obscure sounds and the sharper speakers of Zp. Aka Z.I.P.P.O a local product that is making waves in the european scene. Mordecai which is also a homegrown product from the Valle d’Itria, and which shows asiatic/middle eastern influences.

Un maestro della musica funk e della sua contaminazione con psichedelia e rock, oltre che padrino ispiratore della scena elettronica di Detroit. Con successi come Atomic Dog, Flashlight e Knee Deep si è ritagliato un pubblico tra gli amanti del funk, del rock, ma anche dell’Hip Hop più moderno, che ha preso spunto dalla sua musica con campionamenti e citazioni. Tra gli artisti moderni in cui è più evidente l’ispirazione “funkadelica” troviamo: Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre e la nuova stella di Compton Kendrick Lamar. George Clinton, leader of the ‘groups Parliament’ and ‘Funkadelic’ in the 70’s and 80’s, is a true legend of the black music world. With hits lilke Atomic Dog, Flashligh and Knee Deep, he carved out an audience among both lovers of funk and rock, but also influenced the new school hip hop scene, which used phrases and quotes from all of his compositions. There are a lot of modern artists that have literally taken inspiration from him and his music: Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and the new king of rap, Compton’s Kendrick Lamar, just to name a few.

Il Locus Festival ha incontrato da subito il favore di un pubblico principalmente locale, per poi crescere progressivamente fino a diventare motivo di richiamo turistico per il territorio, come mai? Abbiamo intrapreso un percorso ambizioso fin dall’inizio e nel tempo i risultati ci hanno dato ragione. Abbiamo avuto una crescita esponenziale testimoniata dal fatto che alcuni degli artisti che quest’anno e nelle passate edizioni hanno preso parte al Locus sono stati inseriti nel cartellone del Montreaux Jazz Festival. Vedere le nostre scelte musicali condivise in una delle manifestazioni musicali più importanti al mondo è per noi motivo di grande orgoglio. Un altro motivo di vanto da parte nostra è il fatto che nell’ultimo album del rapper statunitense Kendrick Lamar - già considerato disco dell’anno dalla critica mondiale - ci siano collaborazioni di Bilal, Robert Glasper, George Clinton che parteciperanno al Locus Festival 2015.
The Locus Festival had, from the start, the support of a mainly local audience, and then it grew year by year until it became a tourist attraction in its own right. How did that come about? We started off this journey with strong ambitions and over time the results have shown that we were right. We have had exponential growth. Just look at the fact that some of the artists that are taking part in this year’s festival or those who took part in earlier years have been included in the lineup of the Montreaux Jazz Festival. To see our musical tastes reflected in one of the most important musical events in the world is for us a source of great pride. Another reason for patting ourselves on the back is the fact that in the last album of the American rapper Kendrick Lama – which was already considered to be record of the year by the world’s critics - he was joined by Bilal, Robert Glasper and George Clinton - all of whom are participating in Locus Festival, 2015.
Accanto ai grandi concerti anche le conferenze del Locus Focus. Perché? La musica è cultura, pertanto è utile e importante che se ne discuta. Abbiamo voluto coinvolgere anche in questo senso profili di alto livello come Ashley Kahn, uno dei più celebri critici musicali al mondo vincitore dei Grammy Award, così come Robert Glasper.
Together with the big concerts there are also the Locus Focus discussions. Why is that? Music is culture, and so it’s important to talk about it. In this way we wanted to involve high profile people like Ashley Kahn, one of the best known musical critics in the world, winner of Grammy Awards, and like Robert Glasper.
Chi sono gli artifici di questo successo? Abbiamo un cartellone con venti giorni ricchi di eventi ed appuntamenti, alcuni dei quali realizzati in collaborazione con commercianti e imprenditori di Locorotondo e della Valle d’Itria. A loro rivolgo il mio ringraziamento, così come ringrazio il sindaco Tommaso Scatigna, il Vicesindaco con delega alla cultura e spettacolo Claudio Antonelli - nostro punto di riferimento nell’amministrazione - e tutta la macchina comunale per la grande disponibilità ed il supporto forniti anche per questa edizione.
Who made this festival into such a success? We have a twenty day festival full of concerts, events and discussions, some of which were brought about with the collaboration of companies and entrepreneurs from Locorotondo and the Valle d’Itria. I wish to express my thanks to them, and I particularly want to thank the mayor of Locorotondo, Tommaso Scatigna, the deputy mayor Claudio Antonelli and all the people in the Town Council for being so helpful and for all the support that they have shown in putting on this year’s festival.

Ninni Laterza - direttore artistico insieme a Gianni Buttiglione di Bass Culture, l’agenzia che organizza e produce il festival - racconta le novità di quest’anno.

ella notte di San Lorenzo, lunedì 10 agosto, tutte le luci del Belvedere di Locorotondo saranno spente, ed il caratteristico profilo del paese diventerà lo scenario di uno spettacolo fatto di luci e colori, visibile da tutte le contrade circostanti. Un happening finale, un momento di festa di grande suggestione scenografica. Lo skyline di Locorotondo, caratterizzato dai caratteristici tetti aguzzi delle “Cummerse”, sarà trasfigurato dalla proiezione di un immenso videomapping, mentre musica e spettacoli si estenderanno da via Nardelli fino alle scarpate che si affacciano sulla Valle d’Itria. Una grande mongolfiera illuminata, si alzerà al tramonto fino a 40 metri di altezza, dando la possibilità a chi vuole di godere del panorama dall’alto sulla Valle d’Itria. Dj e musicisti riempiranno di musica il belvedere e la Valle, ed il percorso a piedi verso la Mongolfiera nei campi sotto il belvedere, punto ideale di fruizione dello spettacolo visivo. Il pianista Mirko Signorile ed il dj/produttore Marco Messina (99 Posse) offriranno la loro originale combinazione di jazz ed elettronica. Il celebre dj e produttore francese Philippe Cohen Solal, fondatore dei Gotan Project, offrirà una speciale sonorizzazione del video mapping con un suo esclusivo dj set. Altro ospite d’eccezione sarà il grande musicista nigeriano Orlando Julius, accompagnato dalla formidabile band The Heliocentrics.

n the night of San Lorenzo, Monday the 10 august, all the lights of the Belvedere of Locorotondo will be switched off and the characteristic profile of the town will become the stage for a show made of lights and colours, that can be seen from the country areas that lie below. A ‘happening’ for the finale, a fascinating moment of stagecraft. The skyline of Locorotondo, with
the characteristic sharp pointed roofs of the “Cummerse”, will be transfigured into a vast screen for the projection of videomapping, while music and live shows will stretch out from via Nardelli to the escarpments that look over the Valle d’Itria. A large illuminated hot air balloon, will rise up - up to 40 metres high – so that you can enjoy the spectacle from high above the Valle d’Itria. Our special guest is the famous french dj and producer Philippe Cohen Solal, founder of the Gotan Project, who will offer a special soundtrack to accompany the video mapping with his exclusive dj set. Other dj’s, musicians and street bands will fill the town and the valley with music, gathering by foot under the hot air balloon in the fields below the Belvedere, an ideal spot to enjoy this visual feast.

Quali sono le novità dell’edizione 2015 del festival? La novità più importante dell’edizione 2015 del Locus Festival sarà la festa conclusiva del 10 Agosto, che si svolgerà sul “lungomare” di Locorotondo. Un grande spettacolo con dj set, video mapping, mongolfiere e una grande sorpresa finale su cui preferisco non fare troppe anticipazioni. Un consiglio: partecipate per scoprirlo!
olstered by ten years of constant growth, the Locus Festival is getting ready to start the 11th edition with an even more International lineup. Ninni Laterza – artistic director together with Gianni Buttiglionie of Bass Culture, the agency which organises and produces the festival – talks about what’s new this year.
What’s new for the 2015 edition of the festival? The most important piece of news coming from the Locus Festival, 2015, concerns the last night party which will be held in via Nardelli, Locorotondo or the ‘seafront’ as it is locally known. We’ll have a great show there with a dj set, video mapping, hot air balloons and a big surprise at the end which I can’t really talk about too much beforehand. But I would give you this piece of advice: come along if you want to find out!

Alberobello è terra anche di buon vino, le uve locali vengono utilizzate per la produzione di Negroamaro e Primitivo. All the traditional dishes come from a simple cuisine and are linked to country traditions. As is already well known, you can taste orecchiette pasta in the whole of the Valle d’Itria, but the traditional first course of Alberobello are Spaghetti in the Trullo, which is pasta with cherry tomatoes, bay leaves and breadcrumbs. There are many traditional dishes based on legumes such as white broad beans with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and grass peas with oil garlic and cured pork. Alberobello is also the land of good wine, the local grapes are used for the production of Negroamaro and Primitivo.

Lo scrittore e storico del jazz Nicola Gaeta, ed il trombettista Andrea Sabatini, si uniscono ad Ashley Kahn per parlarci di Clark Terry e della sua influenza, guidarci all’ascolto della sua musica, e mostrarci estratti dal film Keep On Keepin’ On, il documentario su Terry prodotto da Quincy Jones lo scorso anno.

Puglia jazz historian Nicola Gaeta and trumpeter Andrea Sabatini join Ashley Kahn to speak about Clark Terry, his influence, play examples of Terry’s music, and show excerpts from Keep On Keepin’ On, the documentary on Terry produced last year by Quincy.
Carlos Santana is famous around the world for his instantly recognized guitar sound, and the ultimate Latin jam band that he still leads after more than 45 years. His memoirs tell a triumphant story of a young Mexican boy who used the guitar to find worldwide success; it’s also a story of spiritual self-discovery and personal drama which is unexpected in its detail and its humor. Ashley Kahn will explain how this book came together, playing music by Santana, reading excerpts from his book, and showing a video excerpt of him.
