What an exciting time to be in Reading: the diamond in the rough! This former home of textiles and outlets is now finding its time in the spotlight once more! While it might not seem like it from the outside, Reading is in fact home to a myriad of great artistic practices, social and cultural movements, and innovation. GoggleWorks is proud to serve the city of Reading and its surrounding areas by providing a constant creative atmosphere; quality art courses year round for both adults and children; professional teaching artists as mentors for our Student Ambassador Fellowship; opportunities for professional artists to develop their practice within our dynamic walls in the Summer Residency Program; and a recent partnership with Tower Health and the Children’s Home of Reading. And that’s just a taste of what is going on currently! Exciting things are happening! There is a movement within the city: an exciting, vibrant rumble from Reading’s people. A movement of determination, youth, and community. Old and new community members alike are investing their time and energy to make Reading be all it can be. GoggleWorks is also excited to participate in this rejuvenation as we receive our new Artistic Director, Tim Compton, who is relocating to Reading from Indianapolis to spearhead the overall artistic vision of GoggleWorks’ programming. We are thrilled to invite such talent into our community. As we continue to recruit both local and outside talent, GoggleWorks looks forward to being at the forefront of the artistic greatness that Reading already is and will continue to be. You are part of our greatness as well! It is our students, teachers, and staff that make this old factory pulse with new life. Be part of the GoggleWorks experience! Summer is the perfect midway moment to see what you’ve accomplished creatively so far while looking forward to what artistic explorations lie ahead. Seize the moment, try something new, or even take your practice to the next level with our summer offerings!

SUMMER ARTIST-IN-

RESIDENCY

JUNE 3 - AUGUST 9

GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, one of the largest art centers in the country, welcomes three exceptional artists participating in the 2019 Summer Artist-In-Residency program: Mahsa Biglow, Dan Gabber, and Michael Levine. The Summer Artist-In-Residency is a 10 week juried residency where three artists are invited to spend the summer and join GoggleWorks’ art community in downtown Reading, PA. Beginning June 3rd, the summer residency program allows artists to collaborate, experiment, and expand on their artistic boundaries. Residents are provided housing, living and travel stipends, materials, personal studio space, and access to GoggleWorks’ eight communal studios (ceramics, warm glass, hot glass, photography, screen printing, metalsmithing, wood, and virtual reality lab) to complete a project or body of work. The residency culminates in an exhibition to display the work created over the past 10 weeks. Now in its second year, the program is funded by Carole and the late Ray Neag.

MAHSA BIGLOW

Dusk it is Sand on Lightbox, Music, Text Mahsa Biglow will be working on her latest project Tell me, mom... Tell me that story again. (I want this to be over). She is an installation artist, originally from Iran, whose work explores the shared space of the “self” and the “other” and the relationship of media and reality. Her work involves light, sand, sounds, and more to express how the banal encounters with people and places refelect on one’s past traumas, memories, and dreams.

MICHAEL LEVINE

Green Screen Monoprint, Relief Print on Paper and Canvas, Video Projection Michael Levine will create large scale, two-dimensional print used in combination with animation and video projection. The resulting work created during the summer residency will culminate in a mixed media installation and performance. Whether it is manipulating a digital video, charcoal drawing, or relief printmaking, Levine embraces the honesty, rawness, and personal quality of his hands in the art-making process.

DAN GABBER

Kiddush Cup Pair 02 Porcelain, Plastic Dan Gabber re-imagines historically Jewish objects through the use of digital fabrication techniques. By using techniques such as 3D printing and laser cutting to create vessels, a dialogue is developed between the historical sources and modern technology. His work focuses on showing that 21st century technology and ceramic art are not mutually exclusive.
