And now for something new! While there are still challenges for certain, it feels like we are on a new horizon. We are and always will be sincerely grateful for every one of you who have supported and participated with us throughout the last year. Reflection, growth, and evolution have been necessities during this difficult time, and now that development brings great opportunity. This summer offering of classes has been developed, as always, with you in mind. If you have enjoyed our offerings over the past spring, you’re in luck! We will continue to offer Creative Carryouts, one-day workshops, and some online offerings this summer. We are all thrilled to see you flourish once again. Beyond classroom experiences, we are excited to share so many great opportunities happening around the facility and beyond our walls. Drive-in movies will be happening outside while unique gallery shows are hung, events and weddings resume, and the theatre delights viewers of every age. Our push to new mobile experiences allows us to venture out into local communities and take amazing art experiences to the people. Yes, GoggleWorks is bound to be a site to see this summer. We will continue to rely on the same safety measures that have helped us keep students safe throughout the pandemic. Face coverings will be required in all classes. All students must have temperatures checked prior to the start of each class. Class maximums will remain low in order to better enable social distancing. Additionally, we plan to open doors and windows whenever possible to allow fresh air to circulate the spaces. Now turn the page to find your creative escape this summer at GoggleWorks. Artist-In-Residency

GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, one of the largest art centers in the country, welcomes three exceptional artists participating in this 2021 Summer Artist-In-Residency program: Colby Charpentier, Taro Takizawa, and AACG Residency Artist Dan Alexander. The Summer Artist-In-Residency is a 10 week juried residency where three artists are invited to spend the summer and join GoggleWorks’ art community in downtown Reading, PA. Beginning June 7th, the summer residency program allows artists to collaborate, experiment, and expand on their artistic boundaries. Residents are provided housing, living and travel stipends, materials, personal studio space, and access to GoggleWorks’ eight communal studios (ceramics, warm glass, hot glass, photography, screen printing, metalsmithing, wood, and virtual reality lab) to complete a project or body of work. The residency culminates in an exhibition to display the work created over the past 10 weeks. Now in its third year the program is funded by Carole and the late Ray Neag.

Colby Charpentier

Taro Takizawa

Dan Alexander

Colby Charpentier is an artist working primarily in ceramics. His work addresses materiality and relationships between architecture and the vessel.

Taro Takizawa is an artist who focuses on printmaking, wall vinyl installations, drawings and 2D designs. Born in Japan, he has been making images connecting what he has experienced in Japan where he grew up, and in the U.S. since he moved here in 2002 and where he currently resides. His work contains both western and eastern aesthetics with appreciation of traditional printmaking processes and mark making. He is fascinated with blending the boundaries of contemporary studio practice and traditional processes, printmaking and installations, influenced by traditional Japanese patterns from textile designs, architecture and crafts.

AACG Residency Artist Dan Alexander has been working with glass for 17 years. He was always interested in art, history, nature, and creating. After seeing glass being made for the first time he knew this was a trade he had to master.

Colby received his BFA in Ceramics and Glass from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2013, and an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2021. He has worked as a studio assistant to artists Daniel Clayman and Chris Gustin, and completed residencies at Sonoma Ceramics in Sonoma, CA, The Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, FL, and The Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard University. He taught classes at these residencies as well as Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

13

He received his BFA with a printmaking emphasis from Central Michigan University in 2011, and MFA in printmaking from Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts in 2017. While working on his master’s degree, Takizawa has exhibited nationally and internationally.

He attended Kent State University and received a BFA-Glass Concentration. In college he was able to further explore glass as an artistic medium while being introduced to other materials, history, color theory, and composition. Post graduation, he studied with some of the top glass artists in the field today and even worked in Murano, Italy. He also spent several years working for the Corning Museum of Glass where he held the Lead Gaffer position. This job required him to demonstrate traditional techniques, educate an audience on the science/history of glass, and work with internationally known artists and designers.
