ST.LOUIS MISSOURI
CONCEPT STATEMENT
01
Pruitt-Igoe was once a thriving and exciting place to be. At its prime it was innovative and welcoming. The concept of this master plan is to bring that emotion back to the place it belongs with a lively mixed use community. A community that will strive on its own ; equipped with a bouquet of sustainable practices to ensure performance. The site will once again be a key connection to the people of the community.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANNING PROCESS The Master Plan began as an extension of the existing street network. A central axis was added to create a powerful linear element. The location of the original Dickson Avenue is preserved because of its historical significance as the main threshold to the former Pruitt-Igoe development. The existing electrical building is preserved and enhanced to provide for community events. The space directly north of this building is dedicated for the location of the Pruitt-Igoe development Memorial Park. Linear buildings and green spaces help shape walkable street blocks and develop the urban core.
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
05
The overall design for the site is aimed to accomplish net zero water, containing all runoff and used water on site. In addition all water will be treated and stored on site. All components of the design will work together to achieve this larger goal; landscapes, buildings, and the community.
WETLAND
+ GREEN LINE
Gray Water and Stormwater from the surrounding buildings and landscapes will enter the Green Line and immediately directed towards a proposed wetland. The wetlands in this location are not only a key element of the Green Line but will also serve as an educational opportunity. The wetland will cleanse a large percentage of the water before re-entering the Green Line. In large storm situations the wetland is designed to store runoff and release it into the Green Line at a steady rate to increase efficiency.
ENERGY
07
The overall design for the site is aimed to provide all energy needs from techniques used on site. Energy has become a global issue and renewable energy sources are the solution. The site utilizes many renewable energy methods that combined will supply the energy needs for projected development.
08
BIOGAS + MOVEMENT
HYDROLOGIC+SOLAR
The side of the building serves as an architectural design element and a way to produce hydro-electric energy. Run-off and stored water will circulate back and forth down the buildings traveling through several small turbines which will generate energy. When the water reaches the ground floor of the building it will be circulated through a water feature then back to the system. The building is also equipped with solar panels which will provide a large amount of energy for the building. Excess energy will be stored in molten salt in the basement floor.

CIRCULATION URBAN FOOD PRUITT-IGOE MEMORIAL PARK STATEMENT FROM DESIGNER
09
CIRCULATION The hierarchy of urban circulation is going under some major changes in recent developments. Urban cores are naturally dominated by vehicular traffic, this is in part because of the planning practices of the past. Urban areas in recent development are beginning to gear towards pedestrian traffic over vehicular, this design reflects recent trends in circulation.
MULTI-MODAL
10
PEDESTRIAN
The pedestrian thresholds allow people to easily and efficiently move around urban areas. These areas are strictly pedestrian based and eliminate the need for cautious crosswalks and dangerous sidewalks along main vehicular travel ways. In these areas one could find a variety of shops and small restaurants with entrances located in these pedestrian areas.
POLYCULTURE
AQUACULTURE
URBAN FOOD
ROOF-TOP GARDENS
One of the main sources of energy that people rely on daily is food. Growing food locally in urban areas is an extremely popular new trend. The proposed design will utilize roof tops, open space, and dedicated parcels specifically for the growing of various food resources.
SUSTAI
CONSUMER Using recycled shipping containers to store and sell locally produced food will significantly increase the ease of getting the food to the people. Local residents will be informed weekly as to what will be sold on what days and times of the week and the location. It will be common to see multiple vendors temporarily occupy one parking space to sell local food for short periods at a time.

DESIGN D ESIGN
CONCEPT
DESIGN
The concept behind the design of the Memorial Park is driven by the forms and emotion of the Pruitt-Igoe development. The original building footprints are replicated as the forms for the planters. A tiered water feature with these same forms represent the destruction; the top tier falls into the second creating ambient noise to signify this and mask surrounding noise. The final and lowest tier is a reflecting pool to represent the calm after the last building fell, looking into the pool the viewers see themselves as a reminder that this is an important piece of our history. The planting pattern is designed to give the east-west view a linear and orderly pattern as well as directing the visitors to the memorial. The north-south view is designed to make the space seem enclosed, disorderly, and semi-chaotic. The memorial is a simple yet powerful statement.
STATEMENT FROM THE DESIGNER From personal experience visiting the grounds of Pruitt-Igoe this site serves as a perfect opportunity for new development and revitalizing the community. Standing in the middle of the property looking around to see over grown vegetation and rubble put me in awe that some 40 years ago I would be standing in the middle of a monumental development. That feeling was enough alone to become inspired to create something truly unique for the Pruitt-Igoe site. The proposed plan addresses current trends in sustainable urbanism to ensure that this site will thrive once again.
