This Cabernet Sauvignon’s grapes are sourced from the Rutherford AVA in Napa. The area is known for whats called “Rutherford Dust” Cabernet Sauvignons. This one is a big bold complex Cabernet with firm tanins, dark ruby red color and a nice nose. With nice fruit at the beginning of cherry and berry flavors followed by a big finish with hints of oak and spice. Barrel aged for 3yrs on French oak this is one for the wine closet. $29
Grown in the rich granite Loam soil of Placer County. Our Cabernet Franc has subtle notes of Raspberry and Currants with violent and eucalyptus aromas and Velvety tannins. Silver Medal winner of the San Francisco chronicle wine competition.. Truly a pleasure for all your senses. 37

Chardarino is a blend of our Estate grown Chardonnay and Albarino. The results give some of the best characteristics of both grapes - a little French, a little Spanish, and a hundred-percent California rebel. PaZa is happy to be one of the first to grow Albarino in Placer County, and it shows-through with aromas of fresh pear, and a tad bit of minerallity on the palate. Then, the Chardonnay compliments the mix with a kiss of green apple on the nose, and a hint of buttery caramel in a
mouth-full of layered flavors.
New release is a 2012 Four Way Blend. This is a fruit forward well balanced blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Zinfandel, 33% Syrah and 11% of a Petite Sirah.
Aged for two and a half years in French Oak. A slight amount of residual sugar counseled nicely by acid makes this wine perfect with dinner.

14 Torrontes is categorized as an “aromatic” grape varietal. It has abundant fruit flavors, and our goal as winemakers is to preserve that intense fruit character and make this unmistakably Torrontes. Playfully aromatic on the nose and lively on the finish. Pineapple, orange, melon, grapefruit, and citrus blossom nose with a complex balance of tropical fruit, citrus & melon on the finish. Estate Produced & Bottled. Awards: Gold Medal SF Chronicle (2014). Served chilled, the versatility of this wine shines when paired with multiple types of seafood as well as a crisp pear salad. Come enjoy a flavor of summertime with us at the Historic High Hand Fruit Shed in Downtown Loomis. Cheers!
2013 Viognier: Pairs well with seafood and poultry or just to enjoy by itself. A mild floral fragrance with flavors of tropical fruit that carry through the palate

Montepulciano is an Italian varietal, similar to Sangiovese but with more fruit flavors. The hilltop village of Montepulciano is located in the Siena province of southern Tuscany, however, the bulk of the wine is grown primarily in central and southern Italy towards the Adriatic Sea. There is less than 100 acres of Montepulciano grown in California, Secret Ravine Vineyards harvests 1 acre from the Doupnik Family Vineyard located only a few miles from downtown Loomis. The most recent vintage has won two awards so far this year. Come by and have a taste.

“The people at the theater have done a beautiful job,” Dexter said. “They’ve bent over backwards to help us do what we do the best way possible.” The show will be stuffed to the brim with holiday standards like “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” “Silent Night,” and “Ave Maria.” Bridget Yarbrough, who’s been singing with Colla Voce for three years, loves how diverse the choir is. “The singers come from all walks of life, and we come together to make great music,” Yarborough said. “I love Colla Voce and the life experiences it’s created.” Once again, Yarborough is inspired by Dexter’s direction for this year’s holiday concerts. “She’s extremely artistic and has so much vision,” Yarborough said. “She’s always looking forward. I wish I could be part of the audience some nights.” Colla Voce isn’t simply a choir group. Their status as a non-profit has provided art programs to the community such as their Bravo! Music Docent curriculum, which has been implemented in nine schools including Skyridge and Ophir Elementary. The program, which has five different years in it’s curriculum covers subjects like the instruments of the orchestra, to the works of famous composers. Janine Dexter, director of Colla Voce, seeks to do exactly what the arts non-profit organization is named for.
“Our goal is to educate, draw as many people into the creative process as possible,” Dexter “Colla Voce means ‘follow the voice,’” Dexter said. “You see it in orchestral score where soloists or a group of said. “We’re not in the entertainment business; soloists take control, and the conductor is no longer in charge.” we’re in the transformation business.” Dexter, who recently earned a masters degree in Choral Conducting from California State University Los Angeles, wrote her thesis on alternative concert experiences and presentations. “Most people think choral music is just people dressed in black singing, and I’m trying to change that,” Dexter said. Dexter’s performances in the past differ from usual choir concerts. People in the audience enjoying the show are sometimes put to work, allowing them to stretch their amateur pipes to make for a more interactive show. One year, the theme was “Songs of Peace,” and during one reflective number the audience whispered a Maya Angelou poem along with the song. Another year, the theme “Songs of Winter” had the audience playing out sounds of a crisp seasonal wind. Dexter’s approach is ahead of the curve, because according to her, we’re currently entering a golden age of audience participation in all media, including vocal performances. “Art forms used to be static, and they were presented to an audience that was just receiving,” Dexter said. “The tenants of that are dying.” Still, the new approach requires Dexter be quick on her feet. “It’s tricky for me, because there’s no model to follow,” Dexter said. “But I’m always looking for new ways to present the old masters, classical music in a way that’s more engaging than in the past.” This year’s theme, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” will invite the audience to provide pictures of family memories of Christmas past to be displayed in a slideshow during the choir’s performance at the State Theater. “The motivation for me was, ‘hey, we have this big screen in the theater, let’s use it,’” Dexter said. The venue will provide excellent acoustics, and bring authenticity to the kind of show Colla Voce wants to put on for eager fans.
Members of Colla Voce’s chamber choir put on interactive shows under the direction of Janine Dexter. “She’s extremely artistic and has so much vision,” Bridget Yarborough, singer with Colla Voce said. “She’s always looking forward. I wish I could be part of the audience some nights.” Photos/Courtesy

Atasty high-protein, anytime snack rich in fiber and lower in carbohydrates. I like to make them in mini muffin tins and keep them in the freezer so I won’t eat them all at once! For the almond meal and wheat bran, I use Bob’s Red Mill brand. Replace those super-sized, high sugar sweets and enjoy these during the holidays with a dab of butter. Recipe adapted from The Eades Low Carb Comfort Foods Cookbook. Recipe makes 36 muffins.

Each year Kona hold a Cultural Festival to celebrate their history, heritage and, of course, Kona Coffee. This annual festival is the foundation for the yearly Kona Coffee Cupping Competition which samples the region’s finest offerings from top coffee farms. For two days these elite beans are roasted, ground and brewed only to be “slurped” up in the unique tasting method known as “cupping”. Kona’s coffee history is a rich and involved one that started over 100 years ago with the first generation of immigrants (mostly Japanese) starting on five acre parcels to work out a sustainable existence as coffee farmers. What they found was that the unique conditions in Kona, with fresh volcanic soil and perfect greenhouse type weather, created a very flavorful crop. With extreme diligence and a hard working ethic they were able to establish a reputation that stood for quality and great taste. The next generation focused on ways to make coffee farming easier and more profitable. In the search for more efficient methods and a consistent relationship with world coffee buyers, Kona farmers developed techniques and standards that set them apart from the rest of the world and turned Kona Coffee into a legendary name. The future generations found difficulties with many facets of coffee farming, from finding good labor to shady business practices, that threatened to tarnish the name. But with struggles come opportunities to excel and make new improvements. Like their forefathers, the farmers banded together and worked through the tough times; creating even stricter standards and higher levels of quality. Once again,
Kona Coffee found itself the leader among all coffee varieties. Today’s current generation of Kona farmers are watching as the world gets smaller and smaller. New challenges rise to the surface with plant-killing pests like the root devouring Nematode or the Coffee Cherry Bore Beetle which can decimate entire crops. Older generations are selling family farms and newer farmers are coming in with new ideas, good and bad alike. The whole industry is in a state of change but the one constant that remains: the high quality of Kona Coffee. We know this first hand because we have been buying Kona Coffee directly from Kona Farmers for over 20 years and this last year we became Kona Farmers ourselves. Based in Lincoln California, our company, San Francisco Bay Gourmet Coffee, owns coffee farms and mills all over the world including Panama, Mexico, Rwanda and now Kona. This year we harvested our first full Kona crop and have built a coffee mill on site to process our own coffee. We also submitted our first crop to the annual cupping competition just to see where we stacked up. The Crown division that we entered contains the biggest and best coffee farms on the island and quite honestly we were very surprised and pleased to place third. As we gear up for another full season of quality production we will take our bronze medal and put it on the shelf next to the empty spots that will hopefully contain our future first place medals. That is the spirit of Kona Coffee Farmers, always looking to improve, overcome and most importantly make the best coffee anywhere. 54
From every item sold, Kiwanis receives 15-40 percent of the cost. For Lori Heitz, Auburn Kiwanis Club President doing the fundraiser year after year comes naturally. “It’s all about supporting the kids in our community,” Heitz said. Since the Kiwanians got their Willy Wonka on almost 20 years ago, their candy store has expanded and grown. For more than a decade, they’ve also implemented a “See’s For Soldiers” campaign. The campaign, spearheaded by Kathy Partak, was a way for civilians who wanted to support the troops but didn’t know how. “Just because these conflicts aren’t as publicized as they were in the past, that doesn’t mean these soldiers should be forgotten,” Partak said. The program welcomes people patronizing the Kiwanis See’s Store to buy an extra box of candy to donate, which will then be mailed to troops overseas for the holiday season. “See’s For Soldiers” can even mail the donated candy to specific addresses for those who have family serving overseas.
ob Tutton, a member of the Auburn Kiwanis Club stands before a delivery truck, with awe in his eyes. “There’s got to be five palates of stuff in there,” Tutton said to fellow Kiwanis member Gil Hemmer. “I know, I decided to order light this year,” Hemmer joked.
“We call it a win, win, win,” Partak said. “The $15 they spend goes back to the community, and the troops win because they get a taste of home. It beats Crystal Light packages and beef jerky.” Gil Hemmer believes it’s one of the best and most convenient ways for Auburnites to get a local candy fix for the holidays without having to commute to the big city.
For the 18th year running, the Auburn Kiwanis Club is once again occupying a space to sell See’s Candy as part of their yearly fundraiser. After jumping from space to space, including downtown and at the Elm and K Mart shopping centers, it seems the Kiwanis Club finally found a yearly holiday home with the Raley’s shopping center just off the I-80. Considering their position as a holiday mainstay in the area, people are already poking around the store, eager to see it open.
“The community is very supportive of it,” Hemmer said. “Saves people from dealing with the holiday rush, and it helps benefit everybody here in Auburn.”
“People will come in and ask, ‘Hey, it’s that time of year again, when are you opening?’” Hemmer said. “It’s not like a Black Friday thing, but people wait for it.”
The Auburn Kiwanis Club See’s Store will be open Nov. 14 through Christmas Eve. Most years, Kiwanis meets its goal of running out of stock by the time Christmas rolls around, according to Tutton.
From Nov. 14 all through the holidays, the Kiwanis Club raises about 90 percent of their yearly operating budget selling toffee, peanut brittle and chocolate bars. Proceeds raised fund initiatives like scholarships at local high schools like Chana, Placer and Foresthill, the Aktion Club for developmentally disabled adults, and the Kiwanis Family House, which houses families of children receiving treatment at UC Davis Medical Center.
“If we run out before Christmas, we’re happy as a lark.”
Volunteer Jeanne Rupp helps stock shelves for the grand opening of the Kiwanis Club See’s Candy Store.
