Finding joy in fusing glass By Anne Stokes Glass fusion artist Trisa Swerdlow draws from an eclectic range of influence. From classic art and the Impressionist movement, to graffiti and even Steam Punk, Swerdlow’s style is as intricate and layered as the glass that she fuses. “I have always been attracted to glass! I love its luminescence and the way it plays with light, making the colors so bright and the finish so reflective,” she says. “There are currently so many different ways to use glass that, as an artist, I can never be bored with it. I create an eclectic assortment of glass items, including jewelry, objet d’art and useful items for the home, all using a wide variety of techniques. I love sharing all the different and unusual ways that glass can be used. My funky style usually brings a smile to people’s faces and nothing is better than that!” Swerdlow’s bold and unique jewelry, artistic forms, and functional pieces have earned her recognition at the 2015 International Glass Expo and 2015 Rocklin Fine Arts Show. “My art itself is all about finding joy in everyday things and experiences. That is what I express with my work and what I hope I bring to others,” she says. “The more techniques I learn, the more inspired I become to push the boundaries of what is possible. Sometimes this results in catastrophic failure and sometimes it results in awesomeness! Failure makes the successes sweeter. That is how I live and how I create.” Trisa Swerdlow #89 Info: TrisaSwerdlowStudio.com

Love at first spark By Anne Stokes It was love at first spark for Jay Stargaard. The first time the Weimar artist tried her hand at welding, “I could just do it. It felt right and amazing,” she says. “I pushed back from the table and knew this was it for me. I am very grateful to have found this art form. “ Within six months, she had opened shop and was selling her metal sculptures. From large-scale custom pieces to delicate jewelry, Stargaard’s repertoire reflects the passion and skill that she imbues into her art. “What I love most about working with metal is balancing the masculine nature of the material with feminine form to create new works of art that defy one’s perception of what is possible to do with metal,” she says. Stargaard is excited to open up her Weimar studio space to give patrons a glimpse of what goes into creating her unique art. Opening (my studio) up for the (Auburn Art Studios Tour) allows time to meet new people, reconnect with clients, share what I have learned about art over the past year, answer questions, design new commissions, and show what it takes to make original art,” she says. “It is also an opportunity to reveal new work that will kick off Stargaard Art’s Holiday season. This year, not only will I show large sculpture and delicate jewelry, but I will be making one of-a-kind wind chimes and bells.” Jay Stargaard #4 Info: stargaardart.com

Award winning artist brings the world home to Auburn By Anne Stokes En plein air painter Patty Pieropan Dong has traveled the around the globe, painting the world in watercolors, oils, and pastels. From Italy and France to Arizona and California, Dong has created her own works of artistic beauty as well as taught others to do the same since 1986. In addition to worldly landscapes, Dong specializes in still life images, portraits, and woodblock printing as well. Disappearing relics are a recurring theme throughout her art, showing nature triumphing over man-made forms. “I like the theme of something that was once part of our lives and is now forgotten,” she says. Her work has won numerous awards in juried exhibitions and has been shown in several oneperson shows. Dong was recognized as Placer County’s Visual Artist of the year in 1996 and voted “Best ofCountry the Best” A Publication by Gold Mediaby readers of the Auburn Journal in 2003. She was also recognized by the Auburn Rotary Club as a Teacher of the Year in 2010-2011. Dong has taught art to students of all ages and abilities from Del Oro High School to Pohnpei Island High School in Micronesia. In

addition to private lessons, Dong currently teaches at the St. Joseph Catholic School in Auburn. “I’m inspired and eager to share my studio, a space that’s been described as equal parts classroom, gallery and toy box!,” says Dong of opening her space to patrons for the Autumn Art Studios Tour. Auburn artists create glittering glass works of art Rick and Janet Nicholson, artists and owners of Nicholson Blown Glass in Auburn, have over 30 years’ worth of experience collaborating artistically. Their range of work include gallery and public building exhibitions to smaller sculptures such as their Shorebirds and Equine series. By Anne Stokes For the past 36 years, husband and wife artists Janet and Rick Nicholson have collaborated to create gracefully beautiful blown glass works of art which have been shown in galleries, businesses, and private homes locally and abroad. From local installations such as the Roseville Kaiser Medical Building and Lincoln’s Twelve Bridges Library, to faraway places like the Ritz Carlton Club Lounge in Shenzhen, China, the Nicholson’s works add elegance and beauty to public and private spaces all over the world. “We started out with craft fairs around the country, and after that we worked with galleries
nationally,” says Janet. “Now we concentrate mostly on custom commission work and having the local community come out to the studio for open houses.” Both Janet and Rick Nicholson started out as artists of different mediums. Janet worked as a photographer with the University of Southern California while Rick operated a pottery studio. In 1979, they were married both personally and artistically, combining their talents to design and create works of art together. By 1982, they decided to focus their efforts on glass blowing and sculptures. “It’s a collaborative process, so you really need to

It traditionally takes two people, sometimes three or four people to make a piece.” “I think it’s the immediacy and the focus and the flexibility of it. [Glass] really is a versatile material,” explains Rick of his shift in artistic focus over three decades ago. “There are some pretty strict technical parameters, but within those parameters it’s very versatile. I like the colors that are available and just the

fact that you can make almost anything you can think of if you can figure out how to adapt the process.” While the Nicholson’s North Auburn studio is generally only open to the public by appointment, there are several opportunities throughout the year for collectors to get a glimpse inside the artists’ workspace. For many years now, they have opened their workshop to the public as a stop on the North Auburn Spring and Autumn Art Studios Tours, which highlight myriad artists and mediums throughout the Placer County region. During the holiday season, Nicholson Blown Glass studios open up their doors for several weekends around Thanksgiving for their Holiday Open Studio, selling hand-made glass blown ornaments and other holiday gift items.

Narratives in color By Anne Stokes Jeff Doyle paints in a variety of mediums, including acrylics, oil, and watercolors, all of which, according to the artist, have their own narrative. “People say a picture is worth a thousand words,” he says. “You can capture a moment, a little piece of something and tell quite a story about it through color and textures. You can tell quite a lot with a paint brush.” An architect by profession, Doyle took up painting as a serious hobby three years ago, but says he has dabbled in the arts for a lot longer. “Decades ago, pre-auto CAD, everything was done by hand and art was a part of the curriculum when you studied architecture,” he says. “It started as a hobby, but now I’m retired and pretty much paint full-time now.” Recently, Doyle has shared his passion for storytelling through art with residents at the Oakmont of Folsom senior living community. “What I’ve found over the past couple years is that a lot of people like art, but they’re really afraid of engaging with and doing art,” he says. “[But] if you sit with people and you help them through the anxiety they really enjoy the art.” To that end, Doyle hopes that patrons on the

Autumn Art Studios Tour will take the opportunity to try their hand at creating art themselves. “For visitors that happen to come by the studio, [I like] to engage with them, show them the work that I do, and show them some techniques. If people want to try some of the art, I’m going to have some 4x6 panels where they can dabble with brushes.” Jeff Doyle #79 Info: jeffdoylestudio.com
