Plant Pick - Blueberries

Sweet and juicy, packed full of vitamins and picked from your own garden! The fruit is delicious and extremely high in antioxidants, so many people regard it as a ‘super fruit’. Not only are blueberries very productive, they also provide an ornamental feature because of their glorious autumn colours. Blueberries are easy to grow and care for, but do need a moist acid soil. If you're unsure of your soil type, you can grow them in large containers in ericaceous compost. The bushes are semi evergreen and usually grow to about 1.5m high. For best results, grow two different types of blueberries to ensure good pollination.

Plant Pick - Spring Flowering Bulbs

Packets of flowering bulbs to be planted in autumn are guaranteed to make any border, container or pot a vision of colour in the spring. Choose from Hyacinths, Tulips, Narcissus, Crocus, Iris, Scilla and Anemone. Buying bulbs this way is the most economical way to get a great display.

Plant Pick - Caryopteris

Caryopteris is a fetching shrub in autumn when it is covered with eye-catching blue flowers. It is best on light soil or where the ground is interlaced with the outreaching roots of other woody plants and therefore drains quickly after rain. It is perfect for mid-border planting and complements numerous plants within the same area. Plant alongside greens, purples or oranges for a beautiful planting scheme. The stems, which are revealed during winter months, are a rich brown colour with hints of orange, again complementing various colours within your garden.

Plant Pick - Crocosmia

No late summer flower garden is complete without crocosmia's vibrant wands of scarlet, red, orange, and yellow. Crocosmia are deciduous cormous perennials with erect, sword-shaped leaves and branched spikes of showy, funnel-shaped flowers. Grown in a flower border, they provide structure and colour. They offer a late pop of colour when many gardens are starting to loose their bloom.

Commonly known as Honeysuckle, Lonicera is well known for its exotic looking fragrant flowers and vigorous habit. It is a particularly versatile and elegant choice for screening and looks wonderful draped over a pergola or supports. Lonicera plants are also ideal in shrub borders and look stunning when pruned each year to keep them under control. Suitable for any soil type and tolerant of dry shade or chalky areas.

Plant Pick - Evergreen Azalea

Evergreen Azaleas are ideal for any size of garden big or small. This versatile shrub thrives in an acidic well drained soil, containers or plant pots. They prefer partial sun / shady locations, and come in a wide range of vibrant flowering colours. Azaleas are from the Rhododendron family of shrubs this species is generally a compact variety that flowers around late spring. Most Azaleas grow to 60-75 cm in 10 years.

Plant Pick - Fuchsias

The fuchsia is an exotic addition to the garden. Unlike other more tropical exotics, the fuchsia is easy to maintain. Fuchsias do well in the shadier parts of the garden adding colour where it can be difficult to come by. There are many varieties of fuchsia available, so there is sure to be one that is suited to your taste.

Our hardy perennials are British grown from a family business. All plants are grown in 30% reduced compost with a 12 – 14 month slow release food. We regularly stock a mixture of all the favourite perennials, ideal to plant in autumn for a wonderful show in the spring. By planting in autumn the plants have the winter to put down roots and bulk up to give you stronger and larger plants in springtime.

Plant Pick - Heuchera

Heucheras are brilliant little plants for borders and containers. Their colourful foliage never fails to please, and the dainty flowers in early summer are an added bonus. They produce rosettes of leaves in shades of green, purple, orange and bronze, which are variegated or textured. Tiny, slightly scented, bell-shaped flowers are borne on long racemes in summer and come in shades of white, green, pink or red. They are tough, not attacked by slugs or snails, and will tolerate and even thrive in a semi-shaded position, and will grow in most well drained soils.

Plant Pick - Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are a popular shade-loving beauty with delicate heads of flowers in varieties of pink, white or blue and pretty autumn colour and leaf shape. The mophead and lace-cap hydrangeas are most well-known for their ability to change colour from pink to blue in different soils. Varieties of hydrangea differ in size of plant and flower panicle, flower colour, and blooming time.

Plant Pick - Japanese Anemone

Few plants can send up a succession of flowers from August until late October and look elegant at every stage but the Japanese anemone manages it perfectly. Robust and long-living plants the rounded, evenly spaced petals form branching heads of anemone shaped flowers. For impact buy well-grown, larger specimens and plant them in groups in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade and mulch with compost around the plants each year.

Plant Pick - Lavatera

Pretty lavatera adds a romantic note to the garden. Looking almost like a mini hollyhock, they sport an abundance of blooms in rosy pink to white shades. Lavatera can be used along pathways or walks, or grow a row of them from the middle to the rear of a border bed, depending on border height. The pink and white colours mix well with other flower colours. They also make a good cut flower.

Lavender is a popular easy to grow evergreen shrub that produces masses of beautifully scented flowers that bees love, above green or silvery-grey foliage. This drought-tolerant plant that thrives in a sunny border, container or herb garden is often used as a low growing informal hedge.

Plant Pick - Patio Buddleja

The short stems and compact growing habit of these fantastic patio buddlejas make them perfect for growing in patio containers and small gardens. These dwarf butterfly bushes produce masses of fragrant, dense flower spikes that will attract clouds of butterflies and bees to your garden. The buddleja buzz series are hardy and easy to grow in almost any situation.

Plant Pick - Phormiums

Particularly at home in coastal windswept gardens, they can tolerate colds conditions up to -10 deg c. They grow well in a moist but well drained soil and positioned in full sun. Adding lovely splashes of colour and contrast, as well as texture and movement in the garden, choices of rich pink, deep red and purple are a striking feature, as well as light and bright in wonderful yellows, gold’s, creams and greens can add great interest and movement to the garden.

Plant Pick - Patio Roses

Patio roses are small bushes which grow between 18 and 24 inches high (45 - 60 cm). They are compact and flower right through the summer. They can be grown in tubs or in small beds and borders to add easy colour to any sunny spot.

Plant Pick - Penstemons

Penstemons come in a huge range of colours. They are easy to grow perennials and really brighten up the late summer and autumn garden with their bright trumpet shaped blooms. They can be grown in a border, a bed, or even a container, all they require is reasonable soil in which to grow. They are relatively drought tolerant, and whilst Penstemons are happy in full sun, they will tolerate a degree of shade as well.

Plant Pick - Phormiums

Particularly at home in coastal windswept gardens, Phormiums tolerate cold conditions up to -10°c. They grow well in a moist but well drained soil and full sun. Adding lovely splashes of colour and contrast to a border or planted in containers they provide texture and movement in the garden. Plant Pick - Pyracantha

Pyracantha is also known as firethorn. It’s a really popular hedging plant that flowers, has profuse brightly coloured berries, is evergreen and the thorns can deter intruders. Their uses in the garden are extensive and it can be grown as a specimen plant or against a wall. It has small, glossy green leaves, big clusters of creamy perfumed flowers in late summer and then lovely bright berries in red, orange or yellow from early autumn. Pyracantha berries are not poisonous as many people think although they are very bitter to taste, they are edible when cooked and are sometimes made into jelly, birds love them too.
