Hello Members, Here are my last Presidents Notes for the GBS Newsletter. After 10 years keeping the seat warm, I feel it is time for a new leader and a chance for them to put their stamp on the future direction of the club. It has been a joy to lead the club with some very dedicated support from the rest of the committee over the years. David has been treasurer and Helen has been Secretary for the entire time as well. With great support from the previous President Glenn who has continued to help out even when he should have been taking it easy. The club went through some tough times a few years back, but with membership increasing I hope the future is now secure. I’m looking forward to having an exhibition again this year and also attending a workshop or two. January’s meeting last month had a great turnout. I think it was the most for a January meeting ever. We managed to stay covid safe most of the time with masks disappearing as the day progressed. There was some good discussion about the trees everyone brought along. Some asked for advice on restyling options and a few got into trimming and defoliation. There are a few photos on the next page. This month we have two activities to get us all going. At 1pm we will break for our AGM. As stated above I will not be standing for a leadership position this year but I will continue to do the newsletter if required. David has also advised he will be vacating the Treasurers position after a very long stint in the role. Helen might be able to tell us the details on Sunday. Shrua and David A have offered to run a workshop on the day. I’m not sure exactly what they will have for us but I know they will freely offer advice for everyone on styling and care of your trees. They will have a few trees with them for sale as well. Yvonne has her care notes for us on page three. At this time of the year it is mainly looking after your trees re watering and pests. It’s nearly time to prepare for the colder months though. There are a few bonsai events coming up in the next month. See page 4 and the attached fliers. Hopefully you can support the greater bonsai community by getting along to some of these events. That’s enough from me for now. I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday for another enjoyable day Paul

January meeting We had a great turnout for our first meeting of the year. Everyone was keen to catch up for a chat and we had some good discussions about the trees everyone brought along. Phil had a nifty little safety cutter he uses for defoliating his trees. Also looks like Rob has a new fur baby. Photos Trevor and Paul

Yvonne’s Bonsai care notes This will be the last calendar one (if I remember correctly). I will be looking at other topics to write about. Maybe still related to the time of the year you would be doing them. I am also happy to take requests. I love researching so bring it on. Could be about a particular species, or tasks such as airlayering etc. Early Autumn Autumn is just around the corner. Temperatures and daylight are gradually decreasing. It is important to still keep a close eye on watering as we can still get hot days. Keep your airlayers watered if you are leaving them to next spring.

This is a good time to take cuttings from conifers and plant them. Now is the time to start fertilising again to boost your bonsai, ready for winter. Pinching is normally no longer required because the trees would have stopped growing. I feel this summer has been much cooler and wetter this year and I am still doing some pinching. Treatment against insects and fungal decease should be continued as the warm, stormy late summer days encourage particularly white fly and green fly as well as powdery mildew and blight. Protect fruit from attacks by birds and wasps.
