The property has remained open throughout this 18-month renovation, undertaken in two phases in order to minimise disruption to guests. Internationally renowned designer, Joyce Wang, has been commissioned to oversee the overall design concept, and has taken her inspiration from the hotel’s royal heritage and peaceful park side location, as well as the glamour of the early 20th century’s Golden Age of travel. It began its storied life in the 15th century as the Palazzo della Gherardesca before becoming, in turn, a papal residence, a convent and, in 2008, a luxury hotel. That most recent transformation, recounts General Manager Patrizio Cipollini, took seven years—and 42 craftsmen.“They worked furiously day and night to restore the interior to its former glory,” says Cipollini. At Dante Cardini jewellery shop on Florence’s famed Ponte Vecchio, glittering jewels in glass cabinets outshine the sun that shimmers over the Arno. Fourth-generation owners and first cousins Elisabetta Gardella and Massimo Del Taglia, whose great-grandfather opened the shop in 1888, know that jewellery is part of the Ponte Vecchio’s history. “The Ponte Vecchio once had butcher shops, but the Medicis hated the smell,” says Gardella. “They adored beautiful things and wanted to elevate the prestige of the bridge, so they moved out the butchers and summoned the jewellers.” Although jewellery makers no longer work on the Ponte Vecchio, Dante Cardini sells handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces in collaboration with Florentine jeweller Roberto Poggiali. Besides the sparkling collection, Dante Cardini houses another rare gem. A narrow staircase at the back of the shop winds to a private fourth-storey rooftop terrace, the only one accessible from the Ponte Vecchio. Here, guests of Four Seasons Hotel Firenze are exclusively invited to reserve an unforgettable private dining experience for two. As the sun sets over the Arno, take a seat, pour the wine and enjoy a personalized menu created especially for the evening, with elegant golden touches that allude to the bridge’s jewellery tradition. From your place on the terrace, the city glistens in the last light of day, evoking the Florence of the Renaissance, of the Medicis—the Florence that inspired the artisans who captured its creative spirit. Though he may be grouped with the Florentine leather workers at Scuola del Cuoio and other traditional craftsmen of the city—chandelier makers, cobblers and silversmiths—perfumer Lorenzo Villoresi (left) is not a typical artisan. His award-winning olfaction and meticulous techniques are behind his niche fragrance collection and allow him to create personalized scents for private clients. “It is a different kind of craftsmanship, though it’s still very much artisanal,” says Villoresi in his atelier, a small workshop with a grand view of the River Arno. “The perfumer works with very few instruments—a piece of paper and a pen, a very precise scale, a glass beaker, and a stick—slowly adding extracts drop by drop.” Villoresi draws from a palette of nearly 1,500 extracts to create his scents and often writes poetry about his creations. Clients ask Villoresi to infuse notes of cherished places into their tailor-made fragrances: A nostalgic Irishman living in America requested a hint of alfalfa, a wild grass from his homeland; another client, the smell of a stable from his family’s country home. Blending citrus and woody notes, Villoresi creates a heady combination that evokes the blue sea and fragrant lemon trees of Italy’s Amalfi coast—the gentle essence of a memory.

S T AY The Sersale family, owners of the legendary Le Sirenuse, has had many illustrious members: an ambassador in the mid-18th century; a cardinal and archbishop of Naples; even a mayor of Positano, the fishing village-turned-glam resort, in the 1940’s. The palazzo that now houses the property was the Sersale’s seaside retreat, and anyone who stays cannot help but be swept up in the passion and good taste of this family. The majolica tiled rooms are filled with museum-worthy antiques, hand-picked mostly by patriarch Franco Sersale. Today, the charming Antonio Sersale continues the tradition that has transformed his family’s home into one of the world’s most personal properties. As locals will tell you, ‘Positano is Le Sirenuse’.

Intoxicating views over Jackalope’s infinity pool and vineyard.
LIKE NOTHING AUSTRALIA HAS SEEN BEFORE
Just three days after Jackalope Mornington Peninsula opened its doors, Melbourne editor and restaurant critic for Australian Gourmet Traveller, Michael Harden, checked into review the property for the magazine’s upcoming Hotel Awards. Six weeks later, this daring design hotel was declared Australia’s ‘Hotel of the Year’ and of it, Harden hummed that “the Mornington Peninsula hasn’t seen anything like it... and nor has Australia.” Jackalope Hotels’ debut property promises an experience to remember and delivers it in gilded spades. Set on a pristine vineyard amid the Mornington Peninsula wine region, intoxicating rural acreage frames a hotel unique in both destination and design. Highlights include 45 rooms and suites with delights like deep-soak baths, floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces; immersive wine and culinary experiences delivered through two restaurants, a winery, cellar door, and cocktail bar; and a striking, black 30-metre infinity pool overlooking the vines. Jackalope is luxury reimagined. 31

all time. Revered for his boundary-pushing and often surrealist artworks, the Spanish artist left an impression everywhere he visited. During a sabbatical in Rome in 1917, however, the tables turned as career and love became intertwined and his life was changed forever. In February 1917, Picasso travelled to Rome to design the costumes and sets of poet Jean Cocteau’s ‘Parade’, the first Cubist ballet, performed by the illustrious Ballets Russes. The project enabled the artist, renowned for his paintings, to bring his sketches to life on stage. During rehearsals, Picasso became infatuated with dancer Olga Khokhlova, whom he went on to marry. While the ballet moved to Paris for its premiere, Picasso remained inspired by Italy and Italian classical art for many years.
While visiting Rome, Picasso stayed at Hotel de Russie, located just a few steps from his former art studio in Via Margutta. Poet Jean Cocteau also stayed at the hotel, in an adjoining room, and the pair were known to lean out of the windows to pick oranges from the garden. This visit inspired the hotel to create the Picasso Suite. The Suite epitomises the hotel’s style with tasteful, modern furnishings and pops of color. In the living room, prints and pillows featuring Picasso’s designs complement the beige sofa and armchairs. Guests can enjoy an intimate dinner in the dining room, which has a wet bar, an elegant marble table, and built-in shelves filled with books and decorative objects. As the hotel expanded, Giuseppe hit on the idea to install a swimming pool. And herein lies a tale. Allegedly, when the Guinness sisters arrived to view it they cried, “We didn’t agree to an Olympic swimming pool!” “But that’s what we settled on with your architect,” replied Giuseppe.

Located in the bustling theatre district in London’s Covent Garden, St Martins Lane, A Morgans Original, is a dramatic and daring evolution on English luxury. This boutique hotel retains all the youthful, unexpected charm of a London hideaway, at the very heart of the energetic West End. St Martins Lane is truly a hidden gem. Guests begin their journey in The Den, a modern gathering place and decompression zone. Situated just off the lobby, the Den is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea or sip a Gin and Tonic. The décor is warm and sophisticated with a tongue-in-cheek British flair and the art on the walls is irreverent, animating the space with portraits and visual puns. At the renowned Asia de Cuba restaurant, chef Luis Pous joins restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow to offer a dynamic Latin-Asian fusion menu in an inspiring space. At night, guests will find a hidden entrance to Blind Spot behind the tea counter’s posh façade. ANDAZ SINGAPORE INSPIRING FRESH PERSPECTIVES
It’s been a long time in the works, but the Andaz group has finally landed in South East Asia. The location, in Singapore’s historic Bugis, cleaves close to the brand’s MO of opening in a buzzy, culturally-rich quarter. Visually, the decision pays off handsomely with remarkable views of the colourful rooftops of the area’s fin-de-siècle shophouses, a dollhouse silhouette that’s made all the more stark against the looming skyscrapers. Occupying the top 15 floors of Duo, a massive mixed-use development that its architects Buro Ole Scheeren have conceived as a honey-combed curvilinear twin-tower, the interiors of the 342-room hotel are the work of André Fu. Here, the Hong Kong-based designer cannily references the area’s spice trade, cultural and architectural heritage without slipping into obvious clichés. And so, the colour palette echoes the shades of spices, narrow corridors – a by-product of the building’s polygonal cross-section – are quietly refashioned as alleys, elevator signals bear the palimpsest of ancient street lamps, and old letterboxes are reimagined as room-number plates, whilst a towering installation of stylised Singaporean landmarks by André Mendes rears up through the central atrium. The diversions are modestly restricted to an outdoor lap-pool that overlooks IM Pei’s grand Gateway towers, the goal being to nudge guests into the local neighbourhood for spa and fitness options. Gourmands, though, will thrill to ten food and beverage outlets, of which the rooftop Mr Stock bar and lounge, on the 39th floor, offers thrilling wraparound views of the island. Review by Wallpaper*
