WHAT IS ABNORMALUTERINE BLEEDING IN WOMEN?

At some point in their lives, many women experience what is known as “abnormal uterine bleeding”. What does this refer to? It refers to any type of bleeding or spotting between periods, bleeding that is not from a menstrual cycle, bleeding that lasts longer than normal or for more than seven days, and periods that occur less than twenty-eight days or more than thirty-five days apart. It also refers to any bleeding that occurs after menopause.

Let’s address the latter first. Any bleeding after menopause, even staining or spotting, regardless of how slight or how short in duration, must be evaluated as quickly as possible. In the medical field, even among third year medical students, is considered “uterine cancer until proven otherwise”. In menopause the ovaries are no longer functioning, no longer making any estrogen or progesterone. There should therefore be no stimulation of the endometrial lining, and absolutely no further bleeding. If you are post menopause and experiencing any of the aforementioned, a consultation with your gynecologist is necessary.ThoseintheNewYork areamayseeDrSteven R.Goldstein, a gynecologist in NYC for an evaluation.

As women near menopause, abnormal uterine bleeding may become more common. Uterine polyps or endometrial polyps may cause abnormal uterine bleeding. These polyps consist of small masses of endometrial tissue. They are often benign (noncancerous)

Fibroids, small benign tumors, may also develop in a woman’s tomb. This too may cause abnormal uterine bleeding and other symptoms such as frequent urination, pain

during intercourse, pelvic cramping or pain with periods.

Hormonal imbalances are also another cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. If there is too much estrogen and not enough progesterone, abnormal bleeding can occur. Those approaching menopause or in perimenopause may experience this.

When it comes to abnormal uterine bleeding, Dr Steven. R. Goldstein MD, a top Gynecologist in NYC does not rely on blind endometrial biopsies. He is a strong advocate throughout his career for non-invasive techniques to detect the cause for abnormal uterine bleeding. As an internationally recognized expert in transvaginal ultrasounds and Sonohysterography imaging, Dr Goldstein uses painless, non-invasive transvaginal ultrasounds and Sonohysterography to provide him with clear, highresolution images of the uterus to determine the cause of any abnormal uterine bleeding. These painless procedures can also detect fibroids, polyps and hormonal imbalances that may contribute to bleeding.

Dr Goldstein, a specialist in NYC for abnormal uterine bleeding, has a proven track record of using these non-invasive options of sonohysterograms and transvaginal ultrasounds in thousands of cases to prevent women from enduring painful surgeries and blind endometrial biopsies. Each of these non-invasive procedures takes a few minutes in Dr Goldstein’s New York office.

All transvaginal ultrasounds and Sonohysterograms are personally performed by Dr Goldstein. This matters, because the skill of the operator for transvaginal ultrasounds and Sonohysterograms is very important in detecting the reason for abnormal uterine bleeding.
