New Titanium edition for 2011 in Ford’s crossover:
Love it or hate it, you just can’t ignore the Ford Flex It’s a design that polarizes opinion. You love it or you hate it; I don’t think there’s much middle ground for many people. I’m talking about the Ford Flex, a sevenLORNE DRURY passenger, full-size Metroland Media crossover utility vehicle Carguide that is one of the latest Magazine versions of the modern family hauler. Normally, I’m not a fan of boxy designs. But there’s something about the Flex that draws me to it and after driving it again for a week, it’s an easy vehicle to fall for. My wife, on the other hand, thinks it looks like a hearse and although she’s very impressed with the interior and the performance, she can’t get past the exterior styling. After all my years in this business, I’ve come to know that you can’t please everyone. That’s why there are so many models on the road; something for everyone so to speak. There’s no doubt Ford went out on a limb with the styling of the Oakville, Ont.-built Flex, which comes from the same assembly line as the popular Edge crossover. The Flex went on sale just as Ford was exiting the minivan market with the discontinuation of the Freestar. First shown as the Fairlane concept at the Detroit auto show in 2005, the production version of the Flex debuted at the New York auto show in 2007. It went on sale in 2008 as a 2009 model.

The top-line Titanium package (shown) is new for 2011 and includes a number of features over and above the already loaded Limited model.
Although Ford has been on a roll of late, sales of the Flex have not been what Ford would have liked. However, the Flex does have a faithful and growing following and Ford is trying to grow the model with changes for 2011 that include a new top-line trim level called the Titanium package. My all-wheel-drive (AWD) Titanium tester was painted an attractive Ingot Silver Metallic, one of four exterior colours offered on that trim level, which is based on the Flex Limited. It features distinctive beltline molding, a black chrome finish grille, black roof, black
Because of its shape, the Flex has lots of interior room, including the most spacious second row in the full-size crossover class. Continued on Pg. B5

mirror skullcaps, and black chrome on the liftgate and fog lamp bezels. Also standard are 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. Available in front- or all-wheel drive, the Flex starts at $29,999 for the frontwheel drive SE model, rising to $49,599 for the Titanium AWD. There are a number of trim levels in between, including the SEL FWD and AWD and the Limited FWD, AWD and AWD with EcoBoost engine. My tester had a number of other options, including the panoramic sunroof ($1,750), power folding third row seat ($500), active park assist ($700) and rear console refrigeration ($650) to bring the price as tested to $54,979 plus $1,450 freight and PDI. Standard on the Flex is a 3.5-litre 24valve Duratec V6 engine, making 262 hp and 249 lb/ft of torque. My tester had the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 that offers power (355 hp, 350 lb/ft of torque) comparable to a normally-aspirated V8 engine with the fuel economy of a V6. The EcoBoost has a unique twinturbocharged, direct-injection strategy and is available on the Limited and Titanium series. Both engines are mated to a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission that offers the driver a choice between fully automatic operation and manual control. With SelectShift, paddle shifters are integrated into the steering wheel spokes. It’s easy to use. Simply squeeze back to upshift and push forward to induce a “matched-rev” downshift. Inside the Flex, space is generous thanks to its boxy design. Second-row passengers have the most expansive second row space of any large crossover and the second row seats flip and fold to allow easy access to the third row. The optional Powerfold feature ($500) allows you to fold down the rear seats at the push of a button with a similar Autofold option ($650) for the secondrow folding seats. With the second and third-row seats folded, the Flex has an
The Titanium package is the most luxurious offered in the Flex and includes leather seats with suede inserts.
amazing 1,224 litres (43.2 cu ft) of cargo volume. And with the optional Panoramic Sunroof that my tester featured, all three rows of seats get their own overhead windows. Up front, a sliding moonroof opens to the skies, while the second and third rows get the fixed glass window. The optional rear console refrigeration is neat option for road trips, but you’ll have to consider whether the $650 price tag is worth it. All in all, the cabin of the Flex is about as luxurious as it gets in a crossover these days. My tester had charcoal black leather
seating with perforated grey Alcantara suede inserts. It’s a nice combination. Seating is high with a commanding view of the road ahead. The seats themselves are comfortable, even for long commutes and the fit and finish inside is top notch. You wouldn’t expect a 2,174 kg (4,783 lb) vehicle to handle the way the Flex
does. It feels much smaller than its size. The ride is also smoother than one would expect with the long 2,994 mm (117.9-in) wheelbase and the huge 20-inch wheels on the tester. For anyone pulling a boat or trailer, this is an ideal vehicle with a towing capacity of 2,041 kg (4,500 lb). The EcoBoost engine works as advertised with oodles of power from the turbocharged V6 engine. Fuel economy is quite good for a vehicle this size with a Natural Resources Canada rating of 13.1L/100 km (22 mpg) city and 9.2L/100 km (31 mpg) highway. There’s certainly a lot to like with the Flex if you can get past the exterior styling. As the name suggests, it’s as versatile a crossover as there is on the market and with seating for seven passengers, it can be a great people hauler. The Titanium version gets you up into luxury crossover territory and the Flex competes quite well at this level. However, if your tastes (and pocketbook) are a bit more modest, the Flex starts at under $30K and there are more than enough standard features on even the base model to satisfy most families.

Toyota is working on a number of new technologies such as Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) that can predict when a collision is imminent and instigate measures to reduce damage and the risk of injury.
Toyota reveals future technologies for safer driving Metroland Media Carguide Magazine
Toyota has announced its latest advances in vehicle safety systems with a focus on protecting older drivers and pedestrians. This is in response to Japanese road accident statistics that show that more than half of road traffic deaths are of people aged 65 and over and that pedestrians now account for more fatalities than vehicle occupants. Building safer vehicles is central to Toyota’s global vision. Learning from real-world accident data, it continuously improves its testing, products and services, and to support this, it recently set up the Collaborative Safety Research Center in the U.S. to work with North American universities, hospitals and research organizations. Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) with collisionavoidance assist is an important element in Toyota’s work to develop vehicles that are less likely to be involved in accidents. Currently the system can predict when a collision is imminent and instigate measures to reduce damage and the risk of injury. The latest development of the technology is designed to help avoid a collision happening. Using the same millimetre-wave radar and miniature camera to monitor the road ahead, it works to help avoid a collision if the driver fails to apply the brakes (its effectiveness depends on driving conditions and circumstances). It is being further developed to help the driver steer a safe course in an emergency. PCS will monitor a wide range of external factors, including the location of roadside obstacles and approaching vehicles, to judge the collision risks and change the course of the vehicle to help avoid an accident
happening. Toyota introduced an automatic high beam function on some of its cars two years ago, which switches the headlights to low beam when a camera detects the tail lights of vehicles ahead or the headlights of oncoming traffic, then restores high beam as soon as the road is clear. Toyota has improved this technology with an Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB). This partially shields the high beam light so that it doesn’t shine directly in the face of drivers in vehicles ahead. This means it can prevent glare while maintaining near-high beam illumination of the road, reducing the risk of accidents. Toyota has developed the design of its vehicle body structures to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and other road users, using data obtained from conventional crash test dummies and from its THUMS (Total Human Model for Safety) virtual-human computer models. It has developed a new pop-up hood that can reduce the risk of head injury in a collision with pedestrian. It automatically raises the rear of the bonnet to increase the space between it and the engine, which means it can be effective even on vehicles where the bonnet is set low, with limited clearance underneath. Emergency response technology Drivers collapsing at the wheel due to a heart attack or a sudden blackout can cause serious accidents. Toyota has developed a new system that can monitor cardio-vascular functions through the driver’s grip on the steering wheel and detect risks. Toyota plans further research with a view to bringing a system to market, and it has recently presented details of the concept to the Japan Medical Congress.

The family that cruises together – stays together Modified classics carry the Fedoruks to car show holidays Fedoruks’ rare 1948 Cadillac fastback into a world-class custom cruiser. The car has a colourful history. Purchased in Langley, the former owner said he had acquired the car in North Dakota 30 years before with the story that it had been involved in a getaway shootout. There was a bullet hole inches above the windshield on the driver’s side. “I had been to the giant street rod show in Pleasanton, Ca. and saw a car like that customized by Tom Rodriguez. It was chopped, dropped and painted candy coat emerald green,” Tim Kennedy says. “I just fell in love with it and jumped at the opportunity to do my own custom with a car like that.” Kennedy chopped the top on his 1948 Cadillac three inches and removed the rear door pillar giving the car a clean hardtop convertible look. He redid all the chrome on the body and added full custom fender skirts. The car has an air ride lowering system. The heavy Cadillac is powered by a Chevrolet V8 engine coupled to a three speed automatic transmission. “It cruises beautifully and gets great gas mileage,” the builder of the car says. Tim Kennedy has become fast friends with the Fedoruk family through the process of building cars for them. “They are just the nicest people,” he says. “Lorne and Janice look so cute in the car.” Janice, a licensed practical nurse, and Lorne, a shipper receiver for a frozen food company, love the high fives they get when cruising their Cadillac. “People of all ages just love the car and think it’s really neat,” Lorne says. “We meet such great people at the car shows we attend and many have become close friends. That’s what it’s all about.” Tim Kennedy now has a second 1948 Cadillac sedanette to build for new owners to cruise in. He has big plans for the car but can custom build it for someone who wants a very unique ride.
The 1948 Cadillac has full air ride suspension so it can be raised and lowered to a dramatic stance. The unique styling of the 1948 Cadillac sedanette features the first use of fins that became a styling craze in the 1950’s. Maple Ridge street rod builder Tim Kennedy poses with one of his creations – a 1932 Ford roadster.

Trailer queens, garage maidens, seldom or neverdriven classics, frozen-in-time cars… this is not for the Fedoruk family of Chilliwack. ALYN EDWARDS They use their old Classic cars. Really use them. RIDES For Lorne and Janice Fedoruk, getting in their customized 1948 Cadillac sedanette and rolling a few thousand kilometres is routine. They average 7,000 kilometres a year in the car they purchased in 2006. Brother Larry Fedoruk is often alongside in his 1951 Henry J hot rod. “We travel together,” he says. “It keeps us tight.” Son Mark joins the family tours in his 1937 Ford street rod: Pleasanton, Ca.; Fort Collins, Co.; Florence, Or.; Spokane and Puyallup, Wa.; Kamloops, B.C. – there are car shows and meets all over North America and the Fedoruk family is always rolling. Mark Fedoruk has been into cars since before he could walk. Parents Lorne and Janice took their young son to car shows in his stroller. He celebrated his grad by driving his parents’ customized bright yellow 1929 Ford Model A sedan to California with a buddy. He bought his first fixer-upper at the age of 18 – a 1937 Ford ‘humpback’ two-door sedan. “The body had 51 bullet holes in it and it took five years to build,” Mark says. The car features a 305 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 engine, three-speed automatic transmission, power windows, disc brakes, gorgeous twotone paint and a custom interior with heated black leather bucket seats by Langley’s Jerry Yakymchuk of Super Stitches. The 26-year-old has driven his car over 22,000 kilometres in the two years since he finished it. Mark and his girlfriend Stacey Trimble travel with his mom and dad all the time and often with his uncle Larry. “Every sunny day, we take out the toy and head somewhere,” he says. His car was built and painted by Maple Ridge custom car builder Tim Kennedy. Kennedy also built the

Metroland Media Carguide Magazine Interbrand, the global brand consultancy, has ranked Hyundai as one of the world’s greenest brands, citing the automaker’s Blue Drive eco-friendly strategy and its industry leadership in zero-emissions hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle development. In a new global report by Interbrand, Hyundai ranked 11th among the agency’s 50 Best Global Green Brands. Hyundai placed fourth among the seven automotive brands that made the survey. The survey, which questioned more than 10,000 respondents in 10 countries, examined each company’s environmental record and how the company is
perceived by consumers. Companies were judged based on their performance, their environmental impact, its sustainable growth strategy and their corporate social responsibility programs. Hyundai’s Blue Drive sub-brand, launched in 2008, encompasses all of the company’s eco-friendly technologies and products that contribute to higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions, including gasoline, diesel, electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell engines. Hyundai plans to bring plug-in hybrid vehicles to market soon, while the company is currently operating test fleets of its hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles and pure-electric vehicles called BlueOn.

MUGEN of Japan has built a CR-Z MUGEN RR design concept to demonstrate MUGEN’s capabilities in terms of function, style, performance and agility. The CR-Z MUGEN RR was produced by M-TEC in Japan for show purposes only and there are currently no plans for further production. The CR-Z MUGEN RR has been created with many bespoke prototype parts, several of which are created in carbon fibre, including the hood, passenger doors and rear tailgate. Other features unique to the car include a full-length carbon-fibre underbody, a twin central-exit exhaust, vented front bumpers and race-developed suspension. Orange four-piston monobloc brake calipers and forged 18-inch alloy wheels both complement the vibrant Valencia Orange Pearl exterior paintwork. Inside the car, the seats are clad in MUGEN-branded colour-coded leather/ Alcantara. The addition of a race-developed information screen has the ability to record chassis and engine data as well as housing a satellite navigation and audio system. This high-tech kit will monitor the car over two laps to “learn” a circuit and then record lap data and vehicle tracking using GPS.

Chevy marks 100 years with fans, owners and communities
Chevrolet began the 100-day countdown to its 100th birthday by reviewing nearly 1,000 historic vehicles for 20 classic Chevrolets owned by GM employees selected to take part in Chevrolet Dream Cruise activities. – James Fassinger photo for Chevrolet © GM Corp
2011 Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle. Fans can also share stories and photos about the roles that Chevrolets have played in their lives via social media channels such as the Chevrolet Facebook page. During the Centennial period, Chevrolet will continue to showcase its future with important U.S. product launches, including the nationwide rollout of the Volt extended-range electric vehicle, the U.S. launch of the Sonic small car, and media previews for the next generation Malibu. Chevrolet also expects to make several announcements regarding future products. As the countdown toward the Centennial progresses, Chevrolet will make additional announcements about Centennial events, and provide new material about Chevy’s 100-year history and its current and future products and technologies. For additional information, please visit Chevy100.com
Chevrolet will celebrate the countdown to its 100th birthday on Nov. 3 by encouraging its customers and fans to tell their Chevy stories, vote for their favourite Chevrolet cars and trucks, and take the birthday party to their communities with the help of Chevrolet and its dealers. “Chevrolet has sold more than 200 million cars and trucks around the world, and Chevys have touched the lives of countless owners, families, and fans,” said Chris Perry, vice president, global Chevrolet marketing and strategy. “It is fitting that we mark our centennial by recognizing these connections and celebrating Chevrolet’s role in peoples’ lives.” At Chevy100.com, fans will help select their favourite Chevrolet of all time from a list of 16 iconic vehicles, starting with the 1912 Chevrolet Six that helped launch the company, and concluding with the revolutionary
Hold that hill: 2012 Chevy Sonic lends ‘extra foot’ Metroland Media Carguide Magazine
We’ve all needed an extra hand at one time or another – but what about an extra foot? The 2012 Chevy Sonic offers just that – an “extra foot” with standard hill-hold technology on all manual transmission models that can help novice and veteran stick drivers better manage hills. Typically, car manufacturers introduce cutting edge technology and new features in luxury models and gradually filter them down to mainstream vehicles. However, Chevy is introducing hill-hold technology in the all-new Sonic, a sub-compact car.

Hill-hold technology makes navigating hilly terrain with a manual as effortless as an automatic, allowing drivers to get started without rolling backward or forward. In a Sonic equipped with hill-hold, a pitch sensor detects the tilt of the body when the car is stopped on a slope and sends a signal to the stability control system. This triggers the electronically controlled brake hardware to keep the wheels clamped for up to two seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal. Hill-hold is like giving Sonic drivers a third foot, enhancing both the safety and the convenience of driving in hilly terrain.
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic coming in the fall will offer hill-hold technology on all manual transmission models.

Go RVing Canada launches new blog/mapping tool Metroland Media Carguide Magazine
Go RVing Canada has announced its newest website feature: a blog/mapping tool available for viewing by all RV enthusiasts who visit www.GoRVing.ca This new feature will be an excellent source of personal RVing stories, tips about RVing, suggestions for campgrounds to visit and ideas for your next RV adventure. The information tool will be guided by RVers who will blog about their exciting RV experiences at particular RV parks and campgrounds across Canada. Once they have written their review, the park will be plotted on a map to show exactly where the park is located geographically.
The address and website of the park will also be provided in each entry, allowing RVers to not only view the precise location of a particular park, but also have an idea of what the park is like and what to expect upon their visit. Go RVing Canada hopes this innovative tool will encourage more RV enthusiasts to take advantage of the hub of RV related information found on the Go RVing Canada website. Canada is full of spectacular campgrounds and this online initiative is a perfect opportunity for Canadians to share their own RV experiences, as well as learn about others. Families across Canada are discovering the fun and flexible travel that the RV lifestyle provides and this new blog/mapping tool will provide more information about their next trip, which will help ease the planning process.
