2012 Passat has grown in size but not in price
Victoria’s automotive community update...
It’s now larger and more striking, but in the 2012 Passat, Volkswagen is playing it safe. Which is a wise decision, as mid-size sedan buyers aren’t NEIL MOORE typically the most Metroland daring in terms of Media Carguide style. Hyundai’s ‘fluidic Magazine sculpture,’ found in the current generation Sonata, is about as audacious as it gets in this segment. From most angles, the all-new Passat can be best described as conservative and crisply tailored, with an almost coupe-like profile and elegant character line that runs from headlight to taillight. But from the front, the Passat makes a bolder first impression. Its threesided, three-bar chrome grille is flanked by swept-back projector headlamps and punctuated by a big VW logo. Add to it a large, black lower grille, and the net effect is aggressive, maybe even a little mean. On that note, VW is also being aggressive on price. This has worked well for the Jetta, and will hopefully turn things around for the Passat if it is to compete with top sellers like the Ford Fusion, which sold 19,364 units last year, and others like the Sonata, Altima, Malibu, Accord and Camry, which were also well into the double digits. In 2010, the Passat moved only 3,644 units, and sales were even slimmer the year before. But all that is expected to change with the 2012 model that starts at

THE 2011
The all-new Passat (Highline trim shown) is sporting a new look for 2012, and it is larger than its predecessor. Starting at $23,975 in Trendline trim, Volkswagen is expecting brisk sales of its midsize model.
$23,975, which is $3,800 less than the outgoing base vehicle. By the time dealership sales hit full stride, there will only be a couple of solid months left in 2011, but VW plans to sell around 7,000 in the coming year. Why the high expectations? The company believes this vehicle offers a very strong value proposition. Let’s start with the entry model. In Trendline trim with the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder engine with five-speed manual, you get a long list of standard equipment that includes Climatronic dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, power windows with pinch protection, multifunction display, cruise control, six-speaker audio system with auxiliary input, tilt/telescopic multifunction steering, Bluetooth, automatic

headlights, heated power mirrors with integrated turn signals and more. Standard safety includes a full complement of airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brake-pressure distribution, tire pressure monitoring system, and traction control with electronic stability control. “I owned a Mustang before and it converted me,” Bev Hooper says about her decision to buy her 2004 Mustang GT Convertible, 40th Anniversary Edition. “What better way to celebrate than buy a convertible!” For the owner of Hooper Access and Privacy Consulting, colour and horsepower are the favourite features, but her favourite memory to date is more personal. It was three days after buying the car, when she took her two sons on a Christmas light tour – with the top down! What does the bright blue Mustang say about its owner? “Fun. Love(s) to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment,” she says.

package. At $24,875 with the five-speed manual, this also includes heated front seats, heated washer nozzles, rear centre armrest with storage and more. Trendline+, like the Trendline, can also be had with a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic, and with the ‘plus,’ you can also order the 2.0-litre turbo diesel. Already you may be scratching your head, but matters get even more complicated when you consider the entirety of Passat combinations. These include four trim levels (Trendline, Trendline+, Comfortline and Highline), four transmissions (five- and sixspeed manual, six speed automatic with Tiptronic and six-speed auto with Direct Shift Gearbox), along with three engines. In the interests of space, I’ll leave the heavy lifting to the Volkswagen website and provide a few highlights. The base powerplant is a 2.5-litre, 20-valve five-cylinder that makes 170 hp and 177 lb/ft of torque. This engine is available on all trim levels – including my automatic Highline tester – and delivers surprisingly strong performance. Drop it into sport mode, for a sharper throttle response and later shifts, and a stab of the pedal awakens the traction control and brings you quickly up to speed. The lower tier six-speed autobox shifts both smoothly and briskly, allowing me to believe – at least initially – that my vehicle was equipped with the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). But at .04 seconds per shift, the DSG is in another class, and I hope to test it sometime soon. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel adds a $2,300 to $2,600 price premium, but delivers more punch with 140 hp and a solid 236 lb/ft of torque. This comes with surprising fuel economy that will best many

hybrids: 6.8/4.4 litres/100 km with manual transmission. Lastly, the 3.6-litre, 24-valve V6, which is available only in Comfortline and Highline trim, and with the DSG automatic, will deliver the most kick. At 280 hp and 258 lb/ft of torque, it will also raise the price sharply, as the Highline V6 starts at $37,475. My Highline tester was more modestly priced, starting at $33,150 with the 2.5-litre engine and six-speed automatic. The Navigation package added $1,200. Although that still sounds like a lot of dough, Passat Highline trim delivers a lot of car. Seating upholstery is a chic combination of Vienna leather with Dinamica inserts, which is a microfiber that looks and feels like suede. Front seats are eight-way power adjustable, and rear seats are 60/40 split folding with centre armrest and pass-through. The eight-speaker, 400-watt Fender premium audio system with subwoofer and 6.5-inch touch screen really kicks out the sound. It was developed in association with Panasonic. I’m no audiophile, but found this system as
good as many I’ve enjoyed in vehicles costing thousands more. And that Fender logo sure looks cool. Overall, instruments and controls are attractively and symmetrically laid out, with a nice use of soft-touch materials, nut burl wood trim, and chrome and metallic accents. The 2012 model is also the largest Passat to date, and with one of the longest wheelbases in its class, offers more rear seat leg room than its major competitors. I was impressed with how far I could stretch my legs. And thanks to its fully independent suspension, ride is smooth and composed. The Passat is not as stiff as a typical sports sedan, yet not as spongy as some family cruisers I’ve driven. It’s a compromise that should work for many drivers. The new vehicles are starting to arrive in showrooms, and inventory will be coming in September. If you haven’t previously considered a Passat because of its high entry point, now may be time to take another look. There are indeed many choices in the mid-size marketplace, and the 2012 Passat appears well positioned to take on the top contenders.

Back to school driving safety tips By Kate Wells
It’s that time of the year when children are gearing up and heading back to school. It’s also a great time for road users to brush up on their safety tips. Drivers need to be proactive and make sure they are familiar with their road sense and basic rules of the road. DriveWise has prepared a list of tips to keep children safe during this busy time of the year. • School Zones – Make sure you are aware of the school zones in your area and be sure to
abide by them at all times. If there is a 30 km/ hour sign attached, you must go 30 km/hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during school days. If there isn’t a speed limit assigned, you must slow your speed when children are present. • Watch for school buses – If the bus has alternating flashing red lights at the top, you must stop, whether you are approaching it from the front or rear. • Practice your ground viewing techniques – This is a life-saving skill for all drivers to know. When approaching parked vehicles, scan under the cars, watching for feet of children, animals,
bicycles etc. • Pay attention at ALL times! Distracted driving is a hot topic right now and contributes to many crashes. Driving when distracted around a school zone or area with many children can be deadly. Don’t drive while distracted, especially near school zones. • Keep your speed down in general – September is a busy month, kids are walking to and from school, are excited about the new school year and possibly not paying as much attention as they should be. It’s up to us to be watching out for them… expect the unexpected!

Owners of many 2010 and most 2011/2012 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles in Canada will now be able to control key vehicle functions from their smartphones, thanks to OnStar. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac are leveraging OnStar technology to deliver the leading mobile application on the market for new vehicle owners. The RemoteLink app allows owners to activate a number of functions securely from their smartphones, such as traditional vehicle key fob functions like remote start, horn and lights and door lock/unlock. In addition, RemoteLink leverages OnStar’s unique connection to the vehicle to provide key diagnostic information including fuel tank level and range, remaining oil life, current and recommended tire pressure and lifetime average fuel consumption.

2011 Sonata Hybrid
KEEP THE SKY BLUE AND YOUR WALLET GREEN. The 2011 Sonata is the first Hybrid to feature lithium polymer batteries – the smallest, lightest and most advanced hybrid batteries in the world. It’s just one part of our investment in eco-friendly technologies called Blue Drive. With an impressive 206 net horsepower, proprietary 6-speed automatic transmission, panoramic sunroof, and LCD trip computer, the Sonata Hybrid feels more like driving a conventional automobile. After all, just because you care about the environment, doesn’t also mean you don’t care about a great driving experience.
