Family fun and festivities for summer’s last hurrah Jennifer Blyth
Around the Inner Harbour this weekend is the Vancouver Island Blues Bash, hosted by the Victoria Jazz Society and welcoming ticketed headliners Lucky Peteron and the Charlie Musselwhite Band in addition to a host of free afternoon concerts at the Ship Point stage. Also at Ship Point, and a highlight of the summer season for sailing fans and history buffs alike, is the annual Classic Boat Festival. Prefer something a little quieter? Take advantage of what promises to be a sensational, sunny long-weekend and visit the region’s many parks and beaches. So, no matter how you choose to spend your Labour Day weekend, do it safely, have fun and enjoy summer’s last hurrah!
Today’s best blues tunes played live harbourside? Summer-end barbecue with family and friends? Fresh-picked corn-on-the-cob savoured while taking in this year’s agricultural highlights? How will you spend your Labour Day Weekend? However you choose to celebrate, there’s little doubt you’ll have plenty to choose from! With its roots honouring Canadian workers, Labour Day also gives the Victoria Labour Council an opportunity to get together for its 23rd Labour Day Picnic on Monday, a day that has been special for workers since it was declared a holiday in 1894. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. families can enjoy kids’ games, clowns and refreshments and more at Irving Park, at the corner of Menzies and Michigan. Long-weekend highlights for many families start with the Saanich Fair, this year marking 144 years celebrating the Peninsula’s agricultural community. In 2011, that celebration still includes a whole host of agricultural displays and competitions, but those events are joined by modern festivities, including a midway, entertainment, dog shows and much more. If your interests lay more in the entertainment arena, head to downtown Victoria, where the 25th annual Victoria Fringe Festival continues through Sept. 4.
