2008 SEASON PREVIEW
ON THE BRINK
2008 Team Looks To Continue Progessing From Strong ‘07 Season
Top (Left to Right): Cassandra Greives, Kyla Yoder Middle (L to R): Indigo Miller, Kelsey Herschberger, Allison Hawkins, Alicia Swartzentruber, Lindsey Nofziger Front (L to R): Head Coach Jewel Lehman, Katelyn Yoder, Brittany Herschberger, Peni Acayo, Gina Richard, Ashley Janssen, Assistant Coach Val Hershberger.
The 2007 season was a momentous one for the Goshen College volleyball program. The Maple Leafs had their first winning season since a 17-15 finish in 2004, while also picking up more conference wins than in the two previous seasons combined. What may prove to be the most important part of a solid 2007 campaign was how it sets the tone for the future of the program. The 2008 version of the Maple Leafs returns five starters, including all three players who received post-season recognition from the very strong Mid-Central Col-
HOW THEY ARE BUILT Opponents throughout the MidCentral Conference had no idea what hit them when they experienced the heavy hitting and defensive touch of Herschberger sisters (not twins) Kelsey and Brittany last season. Brittany led the 2007 team with 384 digs and was one of four Maple Leafs with over 200 kills. Sister Kelsey was one of the four others, while also posting solid numbers of 33 aces, 42 blocks, and 229 digs. Coach Lehman added a pair of tall freshman – both are 6-foot – that will both have immediate impacts on the rotation. Standout basketball player Cassandra Greives and returner Alicia Swartzentruber add depth and a spark off the bench for a very deep 2008 squad.

defensive mindset
In 2007, four players totaled over 200 digs as the Maple Leafs averaged 16.5 a game. Those type of numbers take a extraordinary effort from the entire team. lege Conference. Head Coach Jewel Lehman has not settled for the status quo as she had gone out and recruiting several impact players that will enter the rotation immediately. “We combine a strong core of leaders along with four new players who are working hard and stepping up their game,” explained Lehman. That nucleus has set Goshen up for a run at long-term success as well. This year’s team features no seniors and a bench far deeper than those of the past. Lehman added, “The benefits of having more depth and talent are already evident in the intensity and level of play in practice, especially in six versus six drills and scrimmage situations.” With all the excitement and energy, comes a new sense of expectation. FACILITIES Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing college campus. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Whether you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basketball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes every chance to train and compete successfully. The luxury of such a large athletic training facility allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the opportunity to train and compete without sacrificing Roman Gingerich their academic pursuits. During their respective seasons, Goshen Recreation-Fitness teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame Center and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Goshen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an efficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically. Indoor Facilities • 3 full-size basketball courts with 10 baskets • 200-meter Mondo-surface running track • 25-yard indoor swimming pool • 2,800-square foot weight room • 4 racquetball courts • Large training room • Indoor soccer goals • Indoor tennis floor by Supreme Corp. • State-of-the-art exercise science lab • Indoor golf hitting range • Track and field: jumping pit, throwing cage, high jump pit and high jump mats Outdoor Facilities • 10 tennis courts; six have lighting • 400-meter track and field complex • 2 sand volleyball courts • 3-hole golf course • Soccer field with lights and seating for 1,500 fans • 3 separate practice fields • Baseball field: Completely fenced with press box and enlarged dugouts • Softball field: Completely fenced with press box and newly built dugouts 12 Goshen College Athletics

Jewel Lehman
Head Coach
of 2005, however, Lehman took over as the academic chair of the physical education department. Lehman does have connections to the area, as she taught and coached at nearby Bethany Christian High School from 1988-1992, following her 1987 graduation from Eastern Mennonite University. A standout volleyball player at EMU, Lehman came to Bethany to teach physical education and health, and returned to the classroom to pursue her master’s degree at James Madison in 1992. Following her stint at Campbell, Lehman completed her doctorate in exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2003. Originally from Harrisonburg, Virginia, Lehman was an all-conference selection in each of her four years playing at EMU. She was the conference player of the year in each of her final three seasons, while also earning recognition as a regional All-American in 1986. She still holds the EMU record for most service aces in a season (92) and had her number 2 retired at the end of her playing career.

jlehman@goshen.edu THE LEHMAN FILES
Jewel Lehman begins her fifth season as head coach of Goshen College volleyball in 2008, looking to continue the rebuilding efforts that were sparked by a 15-14 record a year ago. Lehman lost just two seniors from that squad and returns all three student-athletes that received post-season conference recognition. Possibly the most talented group of athletes in Lehman’s tenure, the 2008 Maple Leafs are looking to take that next step in taking Goshen into the top half of the brutal Mid-Central Conference. The ninth coach in Goshen’s 38-year old volleyball program, Lehman brings with her a long list of coaching credentials, highlighted by her four-year stint as head coach of NCAA Division I Campbell University, a position she held from 1994-1998. Responsible for all aspects of the volleyball program, Lehman led her Campbell team to a school-record 32-7 finish in the 1997 season, losing to Georgia State University in the fifth game of the Trans-American Athletic Conference tournament finals. In that season, Campbell recorded season records for most wins (32), most consecutive wins (16), most home wins (12), most road wins (16), highest home attendance for a game (916) and the highest winning percentage for a season (.821). Prior to her stint at Campbell, Lehman was an assistant coach at NCAA Division I James Madison University for one season. Prior to arriving at Goshen, Lehman spent four years in a physical education teaching role at Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was the school’s physical education- teacher education program coordinator for the past three years, and initially joined Goshen College as a professor in the school’s Teacher Education Department in conjunction with her coaching duties. Beginning in the fall
