2008 SEASON PREVIEW
OVER THE HUMP
Can Unique Blend Of Youth And Experience Spark 2008 Squad?
In the natural progression of most athletic programs, you will find some teams that are very young and others that boast a lot of experience. Rarely, will you come across a team that has as much of each of those characteristics as the 2008 Goshen College women’s soccer team. The youth is clearly evident in the 12 underclassmen – nearly two-thirds of the roster – while just three seniors will roam the pitch for Goshen. Despite the apparent youth, the Maple Leafs return nine starters from 2007, including seven who will be
HOW THEY ARE BUILT the arsenal One of the strongest attacking crews in Coach Mounsihiraj’s tenure, the Maple Leafs have numerous scoring options. Sophomore’s Yaneth Hernandez and Chelsea Graber head the group that has a exciting blend of speed, finesse, and power that should give opposing teams fits.
netminders The cornerstone of the Maple Leaf defense over the course of the past three seasons, Goshen will again look for senior Emmy Gibson to continue her outstanding play in the net. Gibson sits four shutouts shy of the school record and is also ranked second in career saves. Fellow senior Katie Sowers can spell Gibson in the net if needed.

starting for at least the third year of their respective careers. Having youth can give you a spark and energy, while you simply cannot teach or replace experience. Having both on the roster could be exactly what Coach Thavisith Mounsithiraj needs to help get the Leafs over “the hump.” “In evaluating for this season, I am very pleased with our returning crew and incoming players,” explained Mounsithiraj, better known as Coach T. “This is going to be one of the most well-rounded teams I have ever had.” A year ago, Goshen finished the season 4-10-3 overall and 2-4-2 in the very tough Mid-Central College Conference. With a pair of ties and two of the four losses coming by a single late goal, the 2007 version of the Maple Leafs were just a few plays from a very solid conference campaign.
With the line between a 2-4-2 conference record and an outstanding 6-2 mark seemingly so thin, how can Goshen get over that hump? Coach T thinks that his uniquely blended roster of youthful energy and experienced talent can find that answer. “Having nine of 11 starters back is very exciting, particularly,” said Mounsithiraj. “These returning players have demonstrated tremendous potential for success.” The experience is most noted on the Maple Leaf backline. Four-year starter Amy Clem returns on the right side flanked by Ali Gotwals, who hasn’t missed a start in her two years, and returning central defender Liz Gunden. If the experienced wall of defenders is not enough, then senior goalkeeper Emmy Gibson will be called upon. One of the best keepers in Goshen history, Gibson sits four shutouts shy of
magicians of the middle
A huge key to the success of the 2008 squad will be the play of the midfield. Three-year starters Liz Nafziger and Trish Herschberger will need to stay healthy as they move to fulltime duties in the central midfield after the graduation of all conference selection Lucy Roth. The Leafs have a good balance of experience and youth on the outside as any number of options could emerge as a large pool of talented players compete for time.

the school career record and is also in second place on the all-time saves list. The biggest key to the success of the 2008 team may very well be how that balance of youth and experiences plays out in the midfield. Returnees Liz Nafziger and Trish Herschberger look to anchor the middle, but a collection of talented youngsters will compete for jobs on the outside. The midfield will have to not only support the defense, but also spark the offensive attack. The 2007 squad scored just 18 times in 17 games. While defense is certainly the Leafs strength, Goshen will need to find a way to put more balls in the net to get over that hump. An exciting blend of speed, creativity, and finesse skills up front gives the Maple Leafs the potential to frustrate opponents in a variety of ways and put Goshen on the scoreboard.

A very experienced core returns on defense as Ali Gotwals has started every game in the last two years, Amy Clem is a four-year starter, and Liz Gunden anchors the middle after starting last year as a freshman. Look for athletic newcomer Katie Sowers to also compete for a spot in the back.

FACILITIES
Goshen College Soccer Complex Location: Far south end of GC Athletic Complex on southeast side of Goshen College campus. Built: 1950’s Capacity: 1,500-2,000 in grandstands Playing Dimensions: 110 yards long, 75 yards wide
On a cold fall night, the noise can be heard over a mile away. Follow the noise and you will find one of the most exciting soccer atmospheres in all of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Goshen College Soccer Complex has a long history of success having seen 19 Mid-Central College Conference Championships on the men’s side and is a consistent host to
conference and regional tournament contests. The consistent on-the-field success of its teams has contributed to and certainly benefited from a wild and boisterous fan base. Standing from whistle to whistle the Maple Leaf faithful make the Goshen College Soccer Complex the most difficult places to play in the MCC. With chants for every situation, the fans keep opponents and officials on their toes. The outstanding atmosphere would never be possible without the design of the complex. One of the few lighted soccer-specific stadiums in all of the NAIA, the GC Soccer Complex is lit by four oversized light standards with 18 high-watt bulbs on each. Completely covered cement dugouts sit directly in front of the 1,500-2,000 seat grandstands. At the top of the grandstand sits the press box that allows room for media, a radio broadcast team, and statistic crews. It also serves as a modest wind-break for the later season contests. Directly to the south and west of the stadium are three separate practice field, making the Goshen College Soccer Complex ideal for hosting multiple teams and events on the same day. Maple Leaf soccer players also have access to the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center. The $7.3 million state-of-the-art facility was built in 1995 and houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Facilities Include • 3 full-size basketball courts with 10 baskets • 200-meter Mondo-surface running track • 25-yard indoor swimming pool • 2,800-square foot weight room • 4 racquetball courts • Large training room • Indoor soccer goals • Indoor tennis floor by Supreme Corp. • State-of-the-art exercise science lab • Indoor golf hitting range

THE CITY OF GOSHEN City of Goshen Goshen, Ind., is known as the Maple City because of its many maple trees. The city offers many diverse cultural, educational, employment and recreational opportunities. Most notably, we maintain our small town values and charm while offering a multitude of activities and experiences often found in nearby larger cities. The roots of Goshen are traced back to the Amish and Mennonite heritage that settled this area in 1831. While you can still see Amish with horses and buggies on our streets, Goshen is a dynamic and growing community.
A growing and ethnically diverse community Today, Goshen is a city of over 29,000 residents nestled in the center of the northern Indiana county of Elkhart. The community is growing quickly, with the city gaining over 6,000 residents during the1990s. Through our growth over the past 25 years, we have become an ethnically diverse community providing residents an opportunity to interact with people from many different cultures.
