2008 SEASON PREVIEW
50-Year Tradition
Can Leafs Make It 20 MCC Titles in Program’s Golden Year?
With 19 Mid-Central College Conference titles, winning has become more than just a dream for the Goshen College men’s soccer team. It has become an expectation. After back-to-back co-championships in 2005 and 2006, the 2007 Maple Leafs fell just short of making it three straight – although they did manage to make a postseason run that ended in the NAIA Region VIII Championship game. Head Coach Tavi Mounsithiraj and his 2008 squad are focused on regaining their championship swagger in what is the 50th Anniversary of the program.
HOW THEY ARE BUILT the arsenal After losing one of the most talented strikers in program history (Tony Janzen) to graduation, the Leafs have filled the void with a mix of speed and power. Cody Felton returns after being second on the 2007 team with 5 goals and is joined by speedsters Bo Grant and Scott Wilkinson. Newcomer Dan Martin adds the height and power dimensions to Goshen’s attack.
netminders A pair of first-year players will patrol the net for the Maple Leafs as Ryan Troyer (left, Fredericksburg, Ohio) and Clayton Miller (Goshen, Ind.) vie for playing time. Troyer is quick and athletic, while Miller provides size and strength to the position.

FORWARDS CODY FELTON (left) was second on team in 2007 with 5 goals DAN MARTIN big target for headers in the 18-yard box ALEX CASKEY smart and experienced player to add to the mix
BO GRANT fast and feisty never give up type of player BRENNAN TROYER hard-working wing, 2 goals in 2007 SCOTT WILKINSON creative player who can spark offense quickly
“Every year we go in with the goal to finish first in the conference standings and put ourselves in good position to win the conference tournament,” explained Mounsithiraj, the eighth-year head coach of the Leafs. They will have to do it without one of the deadliest strikers in the history of the program, Tony Janzen. A threetime All Mid-Central Conference and two-time NAIA All American selection, Janzen netted 14 goals in 2007 and 44 for his career, which placed him sixth all-time at Goshen. The Maple Leafs do, however, return six of the seven players who started in 16 or more of Goshen’s 22 games in 2007, including All MidCentral Conference defenders Kyle Stiffney (Jr., Goshen, Ind.) and Rusty Emery (Sr., Goshen, Ind.). A tall, central defender, Stiffney was recognized as the MCC Defensive
Player of the Year in 2007, continuing a four-year run by the Maple Leafs. Also known for making runs into the offensive half and rising for headers, Stiffney was named a NAIA All American Honorable Mention as a sophomore. Much like the defense, the Goshen College midfield is not short on experience. Central midfielders Nick Good (Jr., Lititz, Penn.) and Luke Woodworth (Jr., Middlebury, Ind.) both return after starting in 21 games each. Woodworth led the 2007 team with six assists to go with a pair of goals. Also returning are Scott Wilkinson (Jr., Harleyville, Penn.) and Cody Felton (Sr., Quakertown, Penn.), who started in a combined 33 games a year ago. The pair of midfielder/ forwards will be counted on in a variety of ways to spark the offensive attack. Felton was Goshen’s second-leading scorer last season with five goals, while Wilkinson
magicians of the middle
The Maple Leafs have a load of talent and experience in the midfield, led by Nick Good and Luke Woodworth, who combined for 42 starts in 2007. Along with forward/ midfielders Scott Wilkinson (16 starts) and Cody Felton (17 starts), the experience is evident. Juan DeLeon leads a slew of players that will view for time and allow head coach Tavi Mounsithiraj substitute options at key points throughout the season.
MIDFIELDERS NICK GOOD (left) able to control play in the central midfield LUKE WOODWORTH one of four Leafs to start 21 games in 2007 MARTIN BRUBAKER provides balanced approach to midfield play MARK HERSHBERGER has size and strength to win the ball in the middle

found the net three times to go with a pair of assists. The least experienced areas of the 2008 squad come at goalie and forward, but the talent is plentiful. While Felton and Wilkinson will spend some time leading the Leaf attack, they will be joined with athletic front men Alex Caskey (Jr., Goshen, Ind.), Brennan Troyer (Sr., Pittsburgh, Penn.), and Dan Martin (Fr., Salem, Ore.). While 20-22 student-athletes will typically dress for each game, Mounsithiraj has a deep player pool of 38 in which to draw from on any given night. That depth will come in handy as the Maple Leafs compete in a very demanding 2008 schedule. “Our goal is to prepare ourselves to compete well in conference play,” explained Mounsithiraj. “That is the primary purpose and why we schedule as tough as we do.”

The Leafs return a pair of All Mid-Central College Conference performers on defense led by NAIA All American Honorable Mention Kyle Stiffney and co-captain Rusty Emery. Stiffney was named the MCC Defensive Player of the Year last season.

FACILITIES
Goshen College Soccer Complex Location: Far south end of GC Athletic Complex on southeast side of Goshen College campus. Built: 1950’s Capacity: 1,500-2,000 in grandstands Playing Dimensions: 110 yards long, 75 yards wide
On a cold fall night, the noise can be heard over a mile away. Follow the noise and you will find one of the most exciting soccer atmospheres in all of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Goshen College Soccer Complex has a long history of success having seen 19 Mid-Central College Conference Championships on the men’s side and is a consistent host to
conference and regional tournament contests. The consistent on-the-field success of its teams has contributed to and certainly benefited from a wild and boisterous fan base. Standing from whistle to whistle the Maple Leaf faithful make the Goshen College Soccer Complex the most difficult places to play in the MCC. With chants for every situation, the fans keep opponents and officials on their toes. The outstanding atmosphere would never be possible without the design of the complex. One of the few lighted soccer-specific stadiums in all of the NAIA, the GC Soccer Complex is lit by four oversized light standards with 18 high-watt bulbs on each. Completely covered cement dugouts sit directly in front of the 1,500-2,000 seat grandstands. At the top of the grandstand sits the press box that allows room for media, a radio broadcast team, and statistic crews. It also serves as a modest wind-break for the later season contests. Directly to the south and west of the stadium are three separate practice field, making the Goshen College Soccer Complex ideal for hosting multiple teams and events on the same day. Maple Leaf soccer players also have access to the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center. The $7.3 million state-of-the-art facility was built in 1995 and houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Facilities Include • 3 full-size basketball courts with 10 baskets • 200-meter Mondo-surface running track • 25-yard indoor swimming pool • 2,800-square foot weight room • 4 racquetball courts • Large training room • Indoor soccer goals • Indoor tennis floor by Supreme Corp. • State-of-the-art exercise science lab • Indoor golf hitting range
