2008-09 SEASON PREVIEW

THE NEXT STEP Maple Leafs Are Poised For A Run After Year Of Transition.

After a year of transition in 2007-08 – including a late-spring coaching change – the Maple Leafs men’s basketball team returns nine letterman and is poised to make a push toward the top of the powerful Mid-Central College Conference in 2008-09. Despite the late changes last season, Goshen was able to start the season 10-1, win 19 games, and knock off four nationally ranked opponents. In his second season, head coach Gary Chupp is confident that his squad can use that momentum to make that next step.

HOW THEY ARE BUILT quick shot

GUARDS (left) ERRICK MCCOLLUM among nations best pure scorers JEREMY POPE quick point guard with deadly range BRYCE BOW great spot-up shooter and team leader ANDREW NOFSINGER athletic guard who will add depth

The offense starts with junior NAIA All American Errick McCollum who scored more than 30 points five times last season. McCollum will likely spend the majority of his time at shooting guard allowing sophomore Jeremy Pope to run the point. A terrific shooter, Pope hit 3-pointers at a 35% clip and shot a mesmerizing 96% from the free throw line.

Six-foot, 8-inch senior Kyle Laker played all last season on two bad ankles. Finally healthy, the athletic big man has moves and touch on offense and great instincts on the defensive end. He was a NAIA National Championship qualifier in the high jump last spring after averaging 5.4 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Leafs. Sophomore Taylor TenHarmsel knows how to use his body and can shut down opposing centers.

CENTERS KYLE LAKER athletic high jumper comes into season healthy TAYLOR TENHARMSEL big body to that can battle down low with opposition

“Following a successful campaign last season, I am excited to see how we will make the next step,” Chupp said. “In order to do that, we have to become more consistent on a daily basis and learn how to turn things around when they are not going well.” With his nine returners – including three starters – Chupp has the firepower and experience to do that. Leading the way is junior Errick McCollum (Canton, Ohio). The 6-foot, 1-inch guard averaged a conference high 23.6 points per game on way to being named First Team All MCC and Honorable Mention All American last season. McCollum’s high school teammate, Nate West Jr. (Canton, Ohio), also returns for his junior season a year after leading the team with 6.7 rebounds a night. West, at 6’4” is versatile enough to play virtually every position on the floor and can score in a multitude of ways, which led to 10.3 points a game last season. Sophomore’s Jeremy Pope (Westerville, Ohio) and Carl Steen (South Bend, Ind.) now have a year of experience under their belts and will

be expected to step up their games as they enter into probable starting roles. Senior Kyle Laker (Wayland, Mich.) is healthy after playing 200708 with two bad ankles and will use his athletic, 6’8” frame to control the middle. “We can put a team on the floor that is extremely athletic on the perimeter, which allows us to really get after teams on the defensive end of the floor,” said Chupp. “I also feel that when we decide to go small, we can create some tough match ups for opposing teams. However, going small also provides some significant challenges, particularly how we do on the boards will have a huge impact on whether we can get out into transition offensively.” The Maple Leafs have a very talented bench headed by senior Bryce Bow (Muncie, Ind.), freshman Nate Manning (Middleville, Mich.), and junior Caleb Kitchell (Union Mills, Ind.). Bow, a captain, can really hit the long ball, while Kitchell is another very athletic player who can play both inside and outside. Manning comes into the Maple Leaf program

after averaging 19.6 points and seven rebounds in his senior season of high school. Goshen will need to use all of their depth as they play an extremely difficult 2008-09 schedule. Coach Chupp hopes that the Leafs brutal pre-season schedule – including trips to NCAA DII Kentucky Wesleyan and Gannon University – will prepare them for the rigors of the bulk of the MCC schedule in January and February. The Leafs do have two MCC contests in the first semester as they host NAIA #14 Indiana Wesleyan and #2 Bethel College before the Christmas break. “When we play well, it is good enough to compete with anyone we play this year,” Chupp explained. “However, if we want to make a run in the MCC, we have to learn to play through adversity. I think we can get to the point where we can be very good defensively. “ “How well we rebound the basketball and if we can learn to play uptempo offensively while valuing possessions will determine our success,” Chupp added. “We have a chance to do some special things this year.”

forward thinking The Maple Leafs will miss the scoring of Brice Hartman (16.6 ppg), but an extremely athletic and versatile group of forwards should be able to pick up the slack. Junior Nate West Jr. was third on the 2007-08 team in scoring (10.3 ppg) and will be looked upon to provide more scoring punch. West also led Goshen with 6.7 rebounds a night, including 90 on the offensive glass. Sophomore Carl Steen will get his opportunities to show what he can do after proving to be a lock-down defender who can also get to the rim as a freshman. Meanwhile, freshman Nate Manning averaged nearly 20 a night in high school and can score in multiple ways. A pair of junior returners, Caleb Kitchell and Shawn Martz, will provide solid minutes as well.

The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing college campus. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitnessrelated activities. Whether you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basketball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes

The luxury of such a large athletic training facility allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the opportunity to train and compete without sacrificing their academic pursuits. During their respective seasons, Goshen teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Goshen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an efficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically. In addition to these indoor facilities, Goshen College also boasts some of the finest outdoor playing fields in the nation. The baseball, softball and soccer stadiums all are equipped with automatic, in-ground irrigation systems while the 1,500-seat soccer complex is one of the few lighted soccer stadiums at the NAIA level. Indoor Facilities • 3 full-size basketball courts with 10 baskets • 200-meter Mondo-surface running track • 25-yard indoor swimming pool • Exercise machines (Steppers, exercise bikes, rowers and elliptical machines) • 2,800-square foot weight room • 4 racquetball courts • Large training room • Indoor soccer goals • Indoor tennis floor by Supreme Corp.

PRESEASON HEADLINES

OCT. 14 – MAPLE LEAFS SCRIMMAGE AT PRISON IONIA, Mich. – As temperatures began to cool down and leaves change color, college basketball swings into full gear as teams prepare for a grueling season with pre-season scrimmages. Much like any other season-opening scrimmage, the Goshen College men’s basketball team loaded a bus wearing sparkling new warm ups and shoes evident of a fresh new season. Players studied, listened to music, and rested while their stomachs churned in anticipation for their first contest of the season. That is where the typical ended for the Maple Leafs on Tuesday. The Goshen College basketball was not playing a similarly matched opponent from another university. Instead, they were traveling to play inmates at the Ionia Maximum Security Corrections Facility. The facility in Ionia holds approximately 680 inmates with about 250 being Level 2 offenders – less serious offenses like drug charges – and the remaining classified as Level 5 inmates, representing the most dangerous criminals in the state of Michigan. “We thought it would be good for our guys to get this kind of unique experience and get

them out of their comfort zone,” assistant coach Neal Young said. As players and coaches cleared through the nearly hour-long security checks, they were greeted by the prison chaplain who explained more about life in the complex and behind bars. “The breakdown of the family has played such a huge role in the breakdown of our society and is a major reason many of these guys are here,” he said explaining that most individuals he works with have never met at least one of their parents. How unique is it, then, that the unofficial team motto chanted in Maple Leaf huddles is “family.” Something that many of the inmates have little concept of because of their respective backgrounds, Maple Leaf players have found in their teammates. While on a brief guided tour of the facilities, players saw inmates in the Level 5 complexes peering out at them through the iron bars. The walk through the prison yard and library was eerily quiet and controlled. However, in a moments notice, everything changed. As 15 players and coaches walked through the hallway into the compound’s gymnasium, time seemed to stop. Rap music was rattling the walls as the dozens of inmates playing basketball, lifting weights, and standing around froze and stared at the newcomers. The Leafs in turn froze and for several seconds the room stood motionless. Then, the power of sport took over. After an abbreviated warm up, players took to the court for a simple game of basketball. Like most other contests, fans and players disagreed with officials – also inmates in this case – timeouts were called, shots were made, players were heckled by fans, and one team came out ahead – Goshen easily won the game 100-53 against the aptly named I-Max (for maximum security) varsity. At times, players and staff almost forgot that the game was even taking place in a prison. They were forced back in reality when they looked around and saw guards standing with weapons and the crowd full of men, young and old, wearing the bright orange and blue with printed prisoner numbers on them. But for those instances, fans and players – on both sides – could momentarily forget about the circumstances and focus on comradery and a simple game, even if just for a night. In post-game handshakes, inmate team members words were that of “God bless you,” “Thanks for coming,” and “Thanks for picking our spirits up.”

SEPT. 30 – PLAYERS GIVE FREE COMMUNITY CLINICS GOSHEN, Ind. – At six-foot, eight-inches, senior Kyle Laker literally soars over typical elementary school kids. His shear size and strength is enough to get attention just by walking through the door. But throughout the month of September – the roughly two-to-three foot difference in height between Laker and the average elementary school student seemed far less drastic than normal. Why? Because Laker and his Maple Leaf teammates were there for something that transcends size, strength, or age: basketball. The Goshen College men’s basketball team has spent the past month – along with long and rigorous days of conditioning – traveling around to each of Goshen’s elementary schools putting on free basketball clinics. Tuesday’s clinics at Waterford Elementary and Parkside Elementary were just the latest in the line of seven area schools that Goshen players and coaches hit this month. "We wanted to start to get our guys out into the community a little," said Goshen assistant coach Neal Young, who was joined the Maple Leaf coaching staff late this summer. The community has certainly been benefiting from the outreach. The Maple Leafs have put on the clinics for well over 100 elementary school kids already this year, with plans to continue the program next year, if not late next spring. For around two hours each session, Goshen players and coaches have drilled the basics of the game of basketball, while providing plenty of fun and active games to keep the attention of their students. For Laker and fellow senior Bryce Bow, putting on basketball clinics for children is nothing new. They both had high school coaches that were heavily involved in summer camps and so came into Goshen with experience. "It is always fun to be with the kids and see them having a good time," said Laker, who admits that it doesn't hurt that their conditioning gets shortened on clinic days. For other members of the Maple Leafs, the September clinics were more of an eye-opening experience. "Some of our guys are more passive or just not very loud spoken," explained Young. "Putting them in charge of a group of kids has forced them to step up a bit and take some more leadership." So while the Goshen community and its children have been getting to take advantage of some positive role models and quality basketball instruction, Maple Leaf coaches are banking on the fact that this program has also continued the development of its leaders on and off the court.

NEAL YOUNG – Assistant Coach Neal Young beings his first season as an assistant coach at Goshen College in 2008-2009 and his first full-time season in the collegiate coaching ranks. “I am excited to have Neal join our basketball program as one of our assistant coaches,” said Chupp. “Throughout the interview process, Neal stood out on a lot of different levels. He brings a tremendous passion for teaching the game of basketball that is contagious, and I have no doubt that he will make an immediate contribution, both on and off the court.” Young has had one-year stints as a men’s basketball administrative assistant at Anderson University, head coach in the 17 and 16-under divisions of the Anderson Heat AAU program, and as an advance scout for Mid-Central Conference foe Indiana Wesleyan University. After leading Delta High School to a 3A state title as an all-conference performer and team captain, Young took his playing skills to NCAA DIII Anderson University. At Anderson Young excelled on and off the court, earning academic honors as well as the coaches attitude award. He also founded Anderson University’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Young spent the 2007-08 season behind the bench at Anderson Highland High School. At Anderson Highland, Young served as the assistant varsity and head freshman coach with responsibilities in scouting, player development, fundraising, and organization of summer tournaments. His experiences at Anderson Highland –along with local collegiate programs – gives him a wide range of recruiting contacts throughout Indiana.

QUICK HITS: • 2008-09 is first full season on the Goshen coaching staff • certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine • avid bicyclist and disc golf player

QUICK HITS: • 2008-09 is Young’s first year on the Maple Leaf coaching staff • was married late this summer to wife, Maggie • won 3A state title at Delta High School • played at Anderson Univ.

TIM WILLIAMS – Strength & Conditioning Tim Williams begins his first full-time season as the strength and condition coach for the Maple Leafs in 2008-09. Williams served in a part-time role in the 2007-08 season. “Tim started working with our guys last spring and did an outstanding job - adding size, agility, and quickness to all of our players,” said Chupp. “He also individualized their summer workout programs, and I think we will see the benefits this season.” Williams is a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine. The certification includes exercise physiology, program administration, human behavior, nutrition, safety, injury prevention, and exercise programming. An avid bicyclist and disc golf player, Williams has been involved in strength, flexibility, and endurance training for the past 20 years.

Goshen knocked off #20 in years past. They quickly took off as Taylor University and #14 Grace, but they won ten of their first eleven while needed a miraculous performance taking the championship in both by senior Brice Hartman to survive the Anderson University Sam Pierce Classic and the Sienna Heights Maple City Classic. Their only defeat in that stretch was a 62-65 loss in the championship game of Goshen’s Maple City Hoopfest to Aquinas College, who was ranked in the NAIA Top 25 all year and finished the season in the Elite Eight. With a 9-1 record at the start of the MCC season there were still doubters within the conference ranks. That came to a screeching halt on December 1st when the Maple Leafs hosted the No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan

against struggling Marian College at home. Hartman scored 16 points in the final seven-plus minutes of regulation – including the tying shot with four seconds remaining – as the Maple Leafs came from 20 down. They would win 77-75 in overtime. The lack of consistency hurt Goshen as they lost their final two games of the regular season to slip to seventh, which forced a road game against Grace to open the MCC Tournament. A 68-83 loss ended the Maple Leafs’ season. “I feel good about what we were able to accomplish, but am disappointed with how the season ended. We were in the hunt to host a playoff game until the final week of the season. However, it was disappointing having three chances to get twenty wins, and coming away empty,” added Chupp. It wasn’t all for lost as the Leafs finished just one win short of the twentywin plateau, reached just twice in program history. While they will lose second-leading scorer Brice Hartman, they return a strong nucleus, including First Team All MCC and NAIA All American Honorable Mention selection Errick McCollum.
