2008-09 SEASON PREVIEW

FRESH, NEW LOOK Leafs roster turns over, but brings a wealth of talent to the court

The Goshen College women’s basketball team opens its season on November 1 against Purdue University – Calumet, but don’t expect to see the same team in the season-opener as you will in the heat of Mid-Central College Conference play in January and February. The player’s names and numbers will not change, but for a team with just four healthy returners, the early season should be a time of drastic improvement. “Foremost, this will be a team that will improve a lot and be much better in February than they were in November,” explained seventh-season head coach Steve Wiktorowski. “We have only one senior, but we have some good, young players that need a little time to learn their roles in our system and how to play together.” Despite the low number of returners, the Maple Leafs do return huge pieces of their offense in senior Krystal Duensing and Cassie Greives. Duensing, from Osceola, Ind., was second on the 2007-08 team in scoring with 8.7 points a night, while leading Goshen with 41 3-pointers and 50 steals. In her freshman campaign, Greives was named to the All Newcomer MCC Team after averaging fantastic 12.7 point and 7.3 rebound numbers. Coach Wiktorowski has completely transformed the roster for 2008-09 in nearly every category and brought in one of the most talented recruiting classes in his tenure in the process. This year’s squad has increased size, can score inside, and has also tremendously improved their long-range shooting options.

6

Goshen College Athletics

HOW THEY ARE BUILT on the edge Lone senior on the roster, Krystal Duensing will run the point along with junior transfer Rachel Allen. “They are two quick guards who can turn their defense into scoring opportunities for us and both are good 3-point shooters,” said Wiktorowski. While Hahn and Holder have the size to play down low, they can also light up the scoreboard from long-range.

PERIMETER PLAY KRYSTAL DUENSING (above) led 07-08 team in 3-pointers, steals ERICA EMANUEL strong defender, improved scoring RACHEL ALLEN terrific spead and ball handling skills REBECCA STAVETEIG deadly long-range shooter STORMY HOLDER has solid inside and outside game

The Maple Leafs have a ton of shooting options as freshman Rebecca Staveteig comes in after hitting 86 3-pointers in high school while shooting over 30% from downtown. Sophomore Erica Emanuel is an athletic leaper – participates in the long and triple jump in the spring – who can shoot over guards and defend several spots.

Transfers Heather Hahn (Mishawaka, Ind., Mars Hill College) and Rachel Allen (Westport, Ind., Danville C.C.) add immediate experience, while Stormy Holder (Anderson, Ind., Anderson Highland HS) and Rebecca Staveteig (Johnsburg, Ill., Johnsburg HS) will provide versatility and deadly shooting. Hardly just a throw-in, Fairfield High School standout Kelsey Herschberger joins the Leafs after playing volleyball and track her freshman season at Goshen. Add in returners Jessica Carney (So., Lakeville, Ind.) and Erica Emanuel (So., Goshen, Ind.) and the Maple Leafs certainly have the talent needed to be successful and make a renewed run at the top of the MCC. However, depth could be a major issue for Goshen. Sophomore Lindsay Gangloff (Goshen, Ind.) suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first few weeks of practice. Gangloff was steady and versatile part of the Leafs in 2007-08, averaging 6.2 points and 3.5 rebounds. Goshen also has to watch junior Erica Yost (Northville,

Mich.) sit on the bench for the season after transferring from MCC foe Huntington University. “Losing Lindsay was a big blow for us as she was a captain, would have been a starter, and was one of our best and most complete players in the preseason,” Coach Wiktorowski admitted. “She was playing at twice the level she played at last season when she went down and will leave a big hole to fill on both ends of the floor.” While it seems improbable due to the turnover in the roster, the 200809 team’s biggest strength may well be their chemistry. They haven’t been together long, but they have quickly melded into a solid team unit. “This team really likes and supports each other, is very coachable, plays hard, and really wants to do well for each other,” explained Wiktorowski. They will get even more time to bond as they spend a large portion on November on the road. After Saturday’s season-opener, the Leafs travel to a series of three-straight weekend tournaments playing against some of the top teams in the country in hopes

of preparing for a tough conference schedule. Goshen will open their MCC campaign on November 25 when they travel to perennial power Indiana Wesleyan. “People are into numbers and therefore usually judge success by wins instead of the quality of competition,” Wiktorowski said. “I don’t think it proves anything to have a great record in the fall, but then not to be competitive in the conference.” With the depth and talent of the MCC and a young team, Wiktorowski hopes that the November tournaments will further mold his team together, teach them how to play together, and prepare them for top-notch competition. With six of the nine teams in the MCC receiving votes in the NAIA DII preseason poll, Wiktorowski knows that January and February will be the true test of his young team. “Our conference should be one of the toughest, if not the best, in the entire country from top to bottom,” he said. “We face a very challenging November, but I think it will make us better in the long run.”

The Maple Leaf post game begins with sophomore Cassie Greives who shot 54% from the field in 2007-08 while scoring 12.7 points a night. According to Wiktorowski, “She is in better shape and is running the floor well this year.” Greives will again be counted on for a lot of minutes and will be one of the go-to options when the Leafs need a basket. What Goshen lacked last season, was depth down low. Wiktorowski has added former Mishawaka High School star Heather Hahn and athletic freshman Stormy Holder to the mix. Hahn ranks amongst the top 10 scorers all-time at Mishawaka High School while being named honorable mention all state as a senior. Holder was named her team’s MVP for four straight years and averaged 11 points and seven rebounds a game as a senior. The Leafs also boast 5-11 junior Jessica Carney to the post mix. “She is someone who could really surprise people with her development inside this year,” Wik added. Athletic fellow sophomore Kelsey Herschberger can really jump – high jumper in spring, volleyball player in fall – and has the competitive mentality to fight for everything down low.

every chance to train and compete successfully.

Goshen College student-athletes train and compete in one of the best small college athletic facilities in the nation. The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing college campus. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitnessrelated activities. Whether you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basketball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes

The luxury of such a large athletic training facility allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the opportunity to train and compete without sacrificing their academic pursuits. During their respective seasons, Goshen teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Goshen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an efficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically. In addition to these indoor facilities, Goshen College also boasts some of the finest outdoor playing fields in the nation. The baseball, softball and soccer stadiums all are equipped with automatic, in-ground irrigation systems while the 1,500-seat soccer complex is one of the few lighted soccer stadiums at the NAIA level. Facilities Include • 3 full-size basketball courts with 10 baskets • 200-meter Mondo-surface running track • 25-yard indoor swimming pool • Exercise machines (Steppers, exercise bikes, rowers and elliptical machines) • 2,800-square foot weight room • 4 racquetball courts • Large training room • Indoor soccer goals • Indoor tennis floor by Supreme Corp.

djusting from the high school game to the collegiate level play – in any sport – takes some time. Despite the recent increase in the number of so-called “freshman phenoms,” it is much more realistic to allow newcomers time to grow into the college game. Unfortunately, or fortunately in this case, the Goshen College women’s basketball team has had to learn quickly. Saying that this team was young is an understatement considering that six first-year players and only one senior were on the roster. Adding to the difficulty for a young team was one of the tougher schedules in the nation. “Over half the games on our schedule this year were against teams who were nationally ranked or honorable mention (NAIA DII) sometime this season,” said Head Coach Steve Wiktorowski. With the odds seemingly stacked against them, the Maple Leafs shrugged off the situation and went to work. After falling 60-72 at Trinity Christian to start the season, Goshen busted out to a 32-17 halftime advantage as they knocked off Indiana Tech 66-50 for their 10th consecutive home-opening win. Just three games later, the Maple Leafs rallied for a late win on the road against Judson College. After trailing by as many as thirteen in the second half, Goshen pulled within one before freshman Cassie Greives nailed a turn-around jumper as the final buzzer sounded. The

basket gave the Maple Leafs a 59-58 win and a 3-2 record five games into the season. The end of the 2007 calendar year provided the typical ups and downs for a young team. The Leafs defeated a tough Madonna University squad 67-60, but followed it with consecutive two-point losses against Warner Southern and Trinity International. “There were a couple close nonconference games early in the season where I wish we could have played better,” Wiktorowski explained. He added, “It took a little while to find our roles and confidence in each other with that much youth.” Goshen would move into the bulk of their Mid-Central Conference campaign with a 6-9 record. The Maple Leafs would be thrown into the fire immediately as two of their first four conference games were against squads ranked in the top 15 in the nation. After picking up just one win in the brutal MCC a year ago, Goshen rallied for five in 2007-08. A pair of outstanding team defensive efforts at home gave the Maple Leafs a 67-52 win over Grace College and a 81-64 decision over Spring Arbor University. Goshen was also able to snatch wins in the final minutes twice on the road with a 66-65 win at Grace and a 70-67 victory at Marian College. “I thought our biggest improvement really showed at the end of the season when we were so much more competitive overall against teams in our con-

ference than a year ago,” added Wiktorowski. Going into the final week of the regular season, the Maple Leafs found themselves in a very crowded middle of the pack in the MCC standings. A pair of wins would have put them as high as fifth place going into the conference tournament. Instead, Goshen dropped a highlycompetitive game to Huntington University before getting bruised up in a physical 65-62 loss to Marian. The losses pushed the Maple Leafs to eighth-place and forced a match up at top-seeded Bethel College. It was in Mishawaka where the season would end as Goshen fell in the first round to eventual NAIA national quarterfinalist Bethel. “I think the season as a whole was satisfying from an overall competitive and realistic standpoint,” said

Wiktorowski of his team that nearly which ranked in the top 15 in the doubled its win total from a season country. The freshman also grabbed a ago. “There were a team-high 220 rebounds lot of positives to this (7.33 a game), which season and I saw a ton is the seventh highest of growth and developsingle-season total in ment.” Goshen history.
