COACHING STAFF
Head Coach - 5th Season
Doug Yoder (574) 535-7495 dougy@goshen.edu THE YODER FILES
Doug Yoder begins his fifth season as head cross country coach in 2008, presiding as the Leafs’ sixth cross country coach in program history. Yoder, a long-time Goshen High School running coach and two-year Goshen College assistant track coach acquired his first opportunity at a collegiate head coaching position with the Leafs’ long-distance program. “You look at distance running philosophically, and it’s something that’s hard to do, it’s time consuming and most other sports use running as a form of punishment,” Yoder said. “But in that framework I try to make it fun. I’ve learned a lot from my own running, and I think athletes can make a lot of connections from the sport to other areas of their lives, such as study habits and decision making.” Yoder began coaching at the college level after 25 years of work in coaching track and cross country at Goshen High School. Yoder was an assistant boys’ track coach from 1979-1990 and was the head girls’ track coach for the Redskins from 19912003. Yoder added girls’ head cross country responsibilities in 1992, a position he kept until the fall of 2004. Yoder also directed the Goshen Relays track meet for six years and assisted in the process for seven years, while producing eight straight winning seasons in girls’ cross country and qualifying his team for regional and semi-state competition for the last six years. He has had at least one all-state academic performer on his team for the last eight years, and said he hopes to continue the balance of strong running and performance in the classroom at Goshen College. Yoder runs daily, and has participated in 40 marathons in the last 10 years. He has qualified and ran in the Boston Marathon three times, and said he enjoys running with his athletes during practices. Yoder also serves as director of Goshen’s athletic facility — the Roman Gingerich Center — in conjunction with his coaching role at Goshen College. Yoder graduated from Goshen College in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in art. He completed his master’s degree in art from Ball State University in 1984. He also performed graduate studies at the University of St. Francis and Indiana University. Yoder has two sons — Kyle, who graduated from Goshen College in 2005 and Adam, a 2007 GC grad. Doug lives with his wife, Vicki, in Goshen.

COACHING STAFF LYLE MILLER - Assistant Coach
Lyle Miller, five years after resigning as the head coach of the Goshen College cross country programs, continues as an assistant coach with the program in 2008. Miller, who served as Goshen’s head coach for a total of 10 years in two different stints, has attempted to aid coach Doug Yoder achieve the types of success that became familiar to Miller as the Leafs’ leader. Miller was instrumental in beginning the Goshen College women’s program, serving as its first full-season coach in 1986. He added men’s responsibilities the following year, taking over as head coach in both sports in 1988. Miller was chosen Mid-Central College Conference women’s coach of the year after the Maple Leafs won the 1992 team championship. His top men’s finish was in 1988, when the team missed winning the conference crown by three points. Miller also coached additional national qualifiers and other award winners during seven years as an assistant or head coach in the Maple Leaf track and field program. Miller is a 1989 graduate of Goshen College with a major in sports management and has done graduate study at the University of Iowa. He also serves as director of printing and mailing services at the college. He resides his wife, Bonnie, and their two children in Goshen. MARK FURKIS - ASSISTANT COACH Mark Furkis begins his second season as an assistant coach at Goshen College and 18th season overall. Furkis spent four years as the head cross country and assistant track and field coach at Fairfield High School. In 1999, he was an assistant for NCAA DI Indiana UniversityPurdue University Fort Wayne. As a runner, Furkis still holds the 3200 meter record (9:24) at West Noble High School, which he set in 1975. He has already qualified for the National Senior Games for 2009 in San Francisco after having won the 5000 meters in 2007. Mark has been married to his wife, Cindy, for 31 years an they have two grown children, James and Jenny. MELISSA GILLETTE - ASSISTANT COACH A cross country and track standout in her Goshen College career, Melissa Gillette returns to the Maple Leafs for her first season as an assistant coach. SEASON HEADLINES AUG. 30 — Peters and Harnish Take Hokum Karem Title Pair Runs To Second-Straight Win At Event; Leafs Take Second GOSHEN, Ind. — Since its inception in 2005, no pair of runners not wearing a Maple Leaf uniform have crossed the finish line first at the Goshen College Hokum Karem. The team consisting of senior Laura Harnish and junior Tina Peters made sure that run would continue as they ran to a winning time of 37:14. It was the second-consecutive Hokum Karem title for the pair as they won the 2007 event in 37:40. "Tina and Laura did a great job to win this race," commented fifth-year head coach Doug Yoder. "It is good to see them running so well early in the season."
SEPT. 13 — Depth Key To Leafs Win At Defiance Invitational Five Goshen Runners Finish In Top 10 At First Traditional Meet DEFIANCE, Ohio — Last season, depth and balance carried the Maple Leafs men’s cross country team to a fourth-place Mid-Central College Conference finish. On Saturday, Goshen showed that depth will again be a major factor in its success as five Maple Leafs finished in the top ten and Goshen took the team title at the Defiance College Invitational. “We had a very good start to our regular season meets,” said fifth-year head coach Doug Yoder. “Obviously winning the overall team title and having swept the one through three spots is awesome.” The Maple Leafs made things look easy – despite the wet, muddy, and sloppy conditions – as they had the first three across the finish line. Senior Sammy Chege won the event in 28:12, while junior Ben Bouwman was just a second behind to finish second (28:13). Senior David Rumsey took third in a time of 28:37 to become the third Goshen runner to finish in under 30 minutes.
SEPT. 13 — Harnish Defends Title At Defiance Invitational Maple Leafs Take Second For Second Consecutive Year At Event DEFIANCE, Ohio — People often say that history has a way of repeating itself. It did just that for the Goshen College women’s cross country team finished second at the Defiance College Invitational on Saturday. Not only was the team result the same, but senior Laura Harnish repeated her individual performance by again winning the event. Harnish made it two-for-two in taking the Defiance title in a time of 19:43. Her 2007 win in the event was her first individual title (click here for related article) and sparked her historic season, which ended at the NAIA National Championships. On Saturday, Harnish’s lone competition was from teammate Rachael Baker as the Leafs easily took the top two spots and placed four in the top ten in the race. Baker, a junior, ran the 5K course in 20:48 for second after finishing eighth a year ago. “They took charge of the race right from the start and were never challenged,” said fifth-year head coach Doug Yoder. “Having four runners in the top ten is great.”

SEPT. 20 — Leafs Serve Notice to MCC At Midwest Collegiate’s Goshen Finishes 7th While Chege First NAIA Runner To Cross Line KENOSHA, Wis. — Going into Saturday’s meet at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wis., the objective was to get some big meet experience and to see the national championship course, hoping that a Maple Leaf runner would be able to qualify later this season. Instead, Goshen served notice to the rest of the NAIA that they will be a force to be reckoned with. Senior Sam Chege led the charge as he finished seventh overall in a time of 26:25. Chege’s finish was the top among NAIA runners and ahead of perennial powers Josh Foss (26:36) of Indiana Wesleyan and Wes Muller (26:38) of Cornerstone University.
OCT. 3 — Chege Wins 8K At Great Lakes; Leafs Take Second Senior Posts 15th Fastest Time In Program History; Bouwman Close Behind ADRIAN, Mich. — The unique event provided a nice mid-season change up for the Maple Leafs. The format essentially split each squad into two teams, with one running a short race (5K) and the other a long course (8K). The overall competition would combine the top three scorers from each team for the school’s overall tally. Excelling on the long course, Goshen picked up just 24 points in the 8K and totaled 73 total points to place second. Calvin College – perennially one of the top teams in NCAA DIII – won the event with 44 points, while Mid-Central College Conference foe Bethel College took third with 74 points. “The men’s team did an outstanding job to come in second,” said fifth-year head coach Doug Yoder. “To be behind only a program like Calvin says a lot about where we are as a team.” Behind a first-place finish by Sam Chege, and third place by Ben Bouwman, the Maple Leafs actually won the 8K course portion of the event. Chege’s winning time of 26:08 is the 15th fastest time in the history of Goshen College.
OCT. 10 — Harnish 2nd; Leafs Finish Third At Benedictine Invite Goshen Places Three In Top 25 In Strong Team Performance LISLE, Ill. – The Goshen College women’s cross country team placed three runners in the top 25 as they placed third overall at the Benedictine University Eagle Invitational on Friday. Despite having to continue to nurse a bad foot, senior Laura Harnish continues to impress as she finished just four seconds back of the leader for a second-place finish of 23:37.18. Juniors Rachael Baker and Tina Peters continue to improve and lead the Leafs surge heading into the Mid-Central College Championships in less than a month. Baker placed tenth in 25:30.64, while Peters took 25th with a time of 26:42.65. Freshman Rachel Nafziger ran another solid race to finish in 27:59.16. Perhaps the most important finish for Goshen was from its fifth runner, Tessa Horst. The senior ran one of her best races in her Maple Leafs career to finish 50th in 28:18.70. www.GoLeafs.net

OCT. 10 — Chege Wins Third Race of 2008 As Leafs Place First Goshen Continues To Surprise Competition As They Win At Benedictine LISLE, Ill. – The Maple Leafs men’s cross country team continues to surprise opponents and themselves alike as they won the Benedictine Eagle Invitational for the first time in program history on Friday. Goshen placed runners first, second, and fourth to finish with just 47 points and ahead of traditional powers North Central College and Mid-Central College Conference foe Marian College. Chege, from Nairobi, Kenya, led the way as he ran an average 5:21 mile to finish in 26:36.53. It was the third individual title for the senior this season. Close behind, junior Ben Bouwman took second place with a time of 26:53.94, while David Rumsey rounded out three Leafs in the top four in 26:56.77.
OCT. 25 — Eight Maple Leafs Post Season Best At NAIA Challenge Goshen Takes 17th As Eight Nationally-Ranked Teams Take Part GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With eight nationally-ranked teams on hand – including the top two in the country – the Goshen College women’s cross country team broke eight individual season-best times as they finished 17th in the ultra-talented field of 20 teams at the NAIA Cross Country Challenge on Saturday. It came as no surprise to Maple Leaf fans that senior Laura Harnish led the way. The Flanagan, Ill. native ran to a time of 19:21, knocking seven seconds off her season-best mark of 19:28 from the UW- Parkside meet just over a month ago. Her 33rd-place finish was just outside the top 10 amongst Mid-Central College Conference foes. Goshen has shown great improvement as all eight runners bested their marks from those two meets, while four runners took at least a minute off their times. Senior Rachel Versluis showed the biggest improvement as her time of 23:22 was 1:47 less than her mark at the Defiance Invitational. Senior Tessa Horst and juniors Ellie Maloney and Renee Miller each took more than one minute off their lowest times of the season.
NOV. 8 — Harnish, Bouwman Qualify For Nationals Duo Earn All Mid-Central College Conference Honors SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Ben Bouwman, a Woodridge, Ill. native cut nearly half a minute off his previous 2008 best from the NAIA Challenge to finish with a time of 25:57. His time was good for eighth in the conference, earned him his second-consecutive all conference honor, and most importantly extended his season to the NAIA National Championships in two weeks. It will be Bouwman’s first appearance at the national stage. Senior Laura Harnish (Flanagan, Ill.) picked the perfect time to run her best race of the season as she placed fourth at the Mid-Central College Conference Championships on Saturday. In fact, had she not trimmed 26 seconds off her season-best time of 19:21 from the NAIA Challenge. Instead, the senior finished in a time of 18:55 to take fourth and booked her ticket to the NAIA National Championships in two weeks.

THE CITY OF GOSHEN City of Goshen Goshen, Ind., is known as the Maple City because of its many maple trees. The city offers many diverse cultural, educational, employment and recreational opportunities. Most notably, we maintain our small town values and charm while offering a multitude of activities and experiences often found in nearby larger cities. The roots of Goshen are traced back to the Amish and Mennonite heritage that settled this area in 1831. While you can still see Amish with horses and buggies on our streets, Goshen is a dynamic and growing community.
A growing and ethnically diverse community Today, Goshen is a city of over 29,000 residents nestled in the center of the northern Indiana county of Elkhart. The community is growing quickly, with the city gaining over 6,000 residents during the1990s. Through our growth over the past 25 years, we have become an ethnically diverse community providing residents an opportunity to interact with people from many different cultures.
