SOUTH ISLAND

For well over a century, fishing has topped the list of adventures here. According to legend, the waterway between Campbell River and Quadra Island was once so bountiful that it could be crossed by walking on the backs of the salmon. These days, chartered fishing trips with experienced guides are the best way to get out on the water to where the fishing is best.

The North Island’s Indigenous cultural roots are woven into the fabric of each community. Totems, petroglyphs, and oneof-a-kind art can be found in communities throughout the region, including Quadra Island’s Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre, Alert Bay’s U'mista Cultural Centre, and in museums and art galleries in Campbell River and Courtenay.

Creature comforts await in the many communities scattered throughout the region: luxurious spas, arts and cultural experiences, and fine wine and food, most likely grown or raised right here in this rich agricultural heartland. Chefs love it here because so much of what they serve in their dining rooms comes from local land and water: fresh produce, farm-raised meats, justcaught fish and seafood, handcrafted cheese, and freshly baked bread. Farm markets, guided farm tours, and cycling tours are also wonderful ways to see the sights and sample the region’s culinary delights.

The North Island is also gaining a reputation for wine, spirits, and craft breweries. With speciality small batches, exclusive tasting room offerings, and inhouse-only purchases, these are must stops. Naturally, these local products pair beautifully with local dishes.

It all makes for some excellent options to round out your golf vacation.

Campbell River Highlights

Campbell River has all the comforts of home and city, nestled within the stunning natural wilderness. It is also the launching point for some spectacular outdoor adventures.

Elk Falls Provincial Park: Located two kilometres from downtown Campbell River, Elk Falls Provincial Park is a favourite among locals and visitors alike. In addition to many beautiful trails, the park boasts a 64-metrehigh suspension bridge overlooking the falls and canyon below.

Discovery Fishing Pier: Canada’s first saltwater fishing pier extends 150 feet from shore and is 600 feet long, allowing for unobstructed views. Up for casting a line? The Pier concession offers rod rentals during the summer months. If you’re not into fishing, enjoy the views instead, and don’t miss the ice cream at the concession — it’s famous!

Rotary Seawalk: Where the land meets the sea, you’ll find the Campbell River Seawalk. With expansive views of the Discovery Passage and Quadra Island, this eight-kilometre waterfront walkway is a wonderful place to see coastal wildlife, creative shoreline carvings, and the historical Big Rock landmark.

Museum at Campbell River: Interactive, informative, and with award-winning exhibits, the museum is the ideal venue to learn about the past and present. Explore the First Nations’ galleries and follow the changes brought about by exploration and colonization, with exhibits on logging, fishing, and the history of Ripple Rock.

Marine adventures are unforgettable in the North Island.

Getting out on the water: As a city nestled in nature, Campbell River has been shaped by all that surrounds it, and ocean adventures are some of the most time-honoured traditions. Whether for fishing, a wildlife excursion, or simply to enjoy the sunset, getting out on the water with one of the region’s amazing local guides is a must-do in Campbell River.

Craft brewery and tap houses: Campbell River’s brewery and tap houses bring locally brewed craft beer and innovative locally sourced cuisine to the city. Cozy, social, and community-driven, these are the places to get the vibe of the city and sample local specialities.

Dockside seafood: Whether you’re looking to buy fresh and cook yourself or have a dockside feast, there are great options available to enjoy fresh seafood while watching the boats come and go with the catch of the day.

Arts and theatre: Among many local galleries and performance venues, the iconic Tidemark Theatre offers diverse musical performances and visual and media arts. With its bright pink exterior, it is one the most prominent buildings downtown. Right next door, the Campbell River Art Gallery features rotating exhibitions and local artisan offerings.

CROWN ISLE RESORT AND GOLF COMMUNITY

The Comox Glacier and Beaufort Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the course at Crown Isle Resort, whether tapping in on the ninth or enjoying a meal at the Timber Room.

“Crown Isle is a classic Graham Cooke design that tests all facets of your game” says Head Professional, Jared Siminoff. “The par-three fourth hole is a rare golf hole void of bunkers but shows how unique the experience is here at the resort.”

The greens at Crown Isle are challenging but fair and promise to be in top condition, thanks to the tireless work of the maintenance crew. And it is all as beautiful as its surroundings: lush green fairways, lakes, glacier views, and abundant wildlife. It’s easy to see why Crown Isle was awarded 2020 Golf Facility of the Year from the PGA of BC and is the only Canadian stop of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada Qualifying School each spring.

With a new fleet of lithium-ion carts equipped with full GPS arriving this spring, you’ll be able to dial in your game even further; the Crown Isle app lets you do more, including tracking your game against your friends on the monthly leaderboard and ordering take out. Crown Isle’s Timber Room Bar & Grill received a bright new makeover in 2020, and the new Sandwedge halfway shack is perfect for snacks, drinks, and watching golfers tee off on the 10th (or PGA golf on the big screen TV) from the outdoor seating area.

The 14th hole was updated in 2018 with the addition of a creek and small lake. You'll need the proper club off the tee to avoid the water and reach the green in regulation. Crown Isle ends with its signature 18th hole, a 423-yard monster with bunkers both off the tee and guarding the front of an elevated green.

The final walk up the 18th fairway is well worth the club as the Crown Isle Clubhouse looms in the background. The dazzling 48,000-square-foot West Coast structure, offering sweeping views and top amenities, includes conference and meeting space. Nine villa buildings offer scenic accommodation along the first fairway. Coming later this year, a new two-level driving range with Toptracer technology and a teaching / fitting studio, plus tapas lounge and patio.

TEE

Just 30 minutes away, Mount Washington Alpine Resort beckons, reminding golfers that, in the winter months, they can split the day’s activities between golfing and skiing. Alternatively, the ever-present Pacific offers fishing, kayaking, and sailing.

It’s no wonder so many visiting golfers, after a day on the greens, wander over to the Crown Isle real estate office to inquire about available properties.

STOREY CREEK GOLF CLUB

Just south of Campbell River, where the scenery becomes a little wilder yet, you come upon Storey Creek Golf Club. Truly a course that has been set into the rugged natural wilderness, Storey Creek is in the midst of dense old-growth and second-growth forest.

The course itself, designed by Les Furber and opened in 1990, has gained international attention as a renowned championship golf course. It was named the 43rd Best Public Course in Canada by SCOREGolf in 2015 and rated the 2014 number one public course in the province by the PGA of BC.

CPGA Head Professional Steven MacPherson says Storey Creek is distinctive from other Island courses.

“Each of our holes winds through thick forest,” he says. “Golfers don’t see other holes or other groups of golfers. They are at one with nature. No homes. No highways. No sound.”

Instead, you may see bald eagles, deer, beavers, and black bears during your round. “Each of our holes has its own unique shape. No two present similar challenges,” says MacPherson. “The holes twist and turn with creeks meandering across and alongside fairways.”

SET INTO THE RUGGED NATURAL WILDERNESS, STOREY CREEK IS IN THE MIDST OF DENSE OLDGROWTH AND SECONDGROWTH FOREST.

Storey Creek Highlights

No two holes are the same at this course, which also features a pro shop for retail and rentals, covered driving range, putting and chipping greens, and private lessons. The Creekside Grill & Lounge has a great outdoor patio.

While the course has a few forgiving par threes, as well as awe-inspiring par fives, the signature hole is the 12th — and it is also the hardest hole. A long dog-leg right par five, the 12th has a water hazard down the right side beginning at the tee and continuing until the 100-yard marker, forcing the slicer to play strategically, says MacPherson. It’s challenging, yes, but very exciting. “Many of our golfers play a second round in the afternoon, such is their enjoyment of the morning round.”

After your game — or two — at this wilderness paradise, there is no shortage of things to do.

“Campbell River describes itself as the Salmon Capital of the World,” says MacPherson. “Visitors to Storey Creek often choose fishing and whale and grizzly bear charters from myriad specialists located in the city and divide their week between golf and these ocean adventures.”

This year, Storey Creek is hosting a mixed open for couples in May, a ladies’ open in late July, and a men’s open in September.

Yet more great reasons to go north to Storey Creek.

QUADRA ISLAND GOLF CLUB

Beautiful Quadra Island is just 10 minutes by ferry from Campbell River, but it feels like a whole new world. It’s a laid-back Island, known for its rich history, friendly people, and natural beauty.

Jason Tchir, General Manager and Golf Professional at the Quadra Island Golf Club, says the natural beauty is a big draw for golfers. In fact, the setting gets rave reviews.

“People love the setting. It’s a really nice, isolated setting. You’re out with nature and

your golf clubs, and that’s about it,” he says. “You don’t even see too many other golfers, because each hole is pretty isolated from the others.”

Quadra Island Golf Club makes it easy, too, with a free shuttle between the golf course and the ferry terminal, resorts, and marina. But while getting to the greens is easy, this nine-hole course is “a really good nine holes,” says Tchir.

“A lot of people are surprised at how serious a challenge and tough of a test it is just doing nine holes. They come off the course, saying, ‘Wow! That’s a serious golf course.’”

A round finishes with the signature hole.

“It’s our par-three finisher, and it’s a good 100-yard carry over a pretty large pond,” says Tchir, adding that the ninth is very picturesque.

“Really, all the holes are beautiful, and they’re all unique,” he says. “Personally, I love the second hole, a great par four.”

His advice for golfers: keep your ball in play. “I know it’s cliché,” he laughs. “But at our golf course, definitely, the most important thing is to keep your ball, keep it in play, keep it in the middle. Our trees are unforgiving.”

Though underbrush gets cleared away every winter, the forest is thick: this is golfing as natural as it gets. “If you are not hitting in the middle, you’ll definitely have a long day, so club down where it’s safe: in the centre of the fairways.”

While Quadra Island is a popular day trip, it’s also a great place to kick back for a couple days.

“Quadra’s got some really nice resorts. The water access is great, and there are some beautiful areas, like Rebecca Spit Park, and lots of hiking trails, whale watching tours, fishing adventures, the Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre,” says Tchir.

A peaceful setting, fantastic golf, and all that nature. “Kind of endless opportunities in those respects,” he says.

CAMPBELL RIVER GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

Whether on the welcoming course or inside at the interactive and innovative lounge and range, this is golf “FOREveryone.” Ever since opening in August 2018, the Campbell River Golf and Country Club and Velocity Lounge and Range have been described as approachable, innovative, visionary, and even futuristic. As Jason Deegan of Golf Advisor, says, “If golf is to be more inclusive — which is the future of the game — it will need more facilities like Campbell River.” Formerly the Sequoia Springs Golf Course, every hole was remodelled in 2017-18. Mature trees were kept, but otherwise, the 18-hole, 6,141-yard course is unique. Golfers are raving about it.

“Reviews have all been about the phenomenal condition of the course, and the most common question is asking if the grass is real." says William Mounsteven, Head

Professional. “The fairways are pure and lush, and the greens are smooth and quick with enough undulation to make any putt a challenge.”

Looking at the yardage, you may think it will be an easy round.

“Although we may have a few hundred less yards than the traditional golf course, golfers will require accurate tee shots and approaches,” he says. “The bunkers have been placed to penalize errant shots, and our greens are set up so you have to be on the

correct level/quadrant with the pin or face a tough putt.”

The signature hole is the 17th.

“The double dog leg, par five stretches out to over 610 yards from the back tees and has a creek crossing the fairway right about the area you would typically lay up to with your second shot,” says Mounsteven. “You must decide whether you want to be a hero and try to get close to the green or lay back and have a long approach from behind the creek, all while weaving your way down through the tree-lined fairway.”

Innovation goes beyond the exceptional on-course experience: this is a destination, leading a new era in golf technology and world-class facilities. The Velocity Lounge and Driving Range is a highlight, where you can enjoy a fun-first experience in a casual setting, order food and drinks, and hit balls into the night using Toptracer technology.

“We have already seen the game introduced to hundreds of ‘non-golfers,’ and it has led to increased interest in learning more about the game.”

For those already familiar with the game but ready to pick up a few more skills, the indoor golf academy outfitted with Trackman technology and the world-class 8,000-square-foot practice area are second to none. “We’ve created a space that reflects realistic on-course situations, from a simple bump-and-run to a 60-yard wedge shot, that provide golfers ample opportunity to improve all aspects of their short-game,” says Mounsteven. July 2020 brought the opening of a 2,400-square-foot retail space/golf shop that will appeal to golfers and athletic enthusiasts alike. The new space also features brand-new locker room facilities sure to make your visit all the more comfortable and enjoyable.
