SCOTLAND’s GOLF COAST GOLF EAST LOTHIAN
Away from the course, visitors may wish to visit the famous Bass Rock, or perhaps enjoy the fantastic beaches. East Lothian is also renowned for its culinary excellence, with award-winning butchers, freshly-caught seafood and some of the best fruit and vegetable producers in the UK all enabling the local restaurants to serve some of the finest food in Scotland. With Edinburgh Airport just a short drive from the region and exceptional road and rail links, East Lothian really is the golf destination with everything. East Lothian Course Guide

Gullane
Designed by Donald Steel just 10 years ago, this delightful course is firmly established as one of the best challenges in the region. It has already hosted a number of big events, including the Scottish Amateur Strokeplay and qualifying for the Senior Open.
Blessed with superb golfing terrain, and boasting three excellent courses, Gullane is a venue that offers something for all golfers. The famed No.1 course - with its panoramic views - is rightly regarded as the pick of three, but it would be a great disservice to Numbers 2 and 3 to consider them inferior in any way, with each presenting golfers a unique challenge.
Dunbar
North Berwick
Musselburgh Golf Club
One of the world’s oldest courses, this quirky links is a true classic. Home to the infamous ‘Perfection’ (devilish par-4 16th) and the ‘Redan’ par-3 15th that has been imitated the world over without being bettered, it‘s also well known for the wall that guards the entrance to the 13th.
Designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid in the 1930s, Musselburgh is a lovely tree-lined parkland course that follows a bend of the River Esk and also includes the challenge of the Craigie Burn. A twotime host of the Scottish Professional Championship, this is classic parkland golf.
Glen Golf Club
Muirfield
Luffness New Widely regarded as one of the toughest courses in Scotland, Luffness is renowned for the quality and trueness of its putting surfaces, as well as the seemingly ever-present winds that have famously prompted local caddies to suggest that “it will take you three to get up there in two today, Sir”.
Kilspindie Hidden among the nature reserve of Aberlady Bay, Kilspindie is one of the oldest links courses in the world. The challenges are many and varied, not least at the striking par-3 8th which plays across the beach overlooking Gosford Bay.

With 22 courses along 30 miles of stunning coastline, not to mention a golf-friendly micro climate all of its own, it’s little wonder that East Lothian is known as Scotland‘s Golf Coast. Very few places on earth are blessed with such a high concentration of Championship links courses, making it the perfect venue for a golf tour. Top billing goes to the legendary Muirfield - home to the Open Championship in 2013 - but there is a very strong supporting cast that includes Final Qualifying hosts such as North Berwick, Gullane, Dunbar and historic Musselburgh. With such variety of courses, including both links and parkland - all in close proximity to each other, there’s something to suit every budget and standard of player.

Golf has been played at this historic club on the Firth of Forth for more than 150 years. The current layout was created by Old Tom Morris, and it is testament to his great design that it has played host to every single Scottish Championship, as well being a qualifying venue for the Open itself.
Whitekirk A traditional Scottish heathland with all the advantages of modern course design – including USGA spec greens – Whitekirk is mature beyond its years. With commanding views of the famed Bass Rock and all manner of rocky outcrops and grassy hollows it’s a course with plenty to savour.
One of the most underrated courses in Scotland, Glen is a joint-venture between James Braid and Ben Sayers who created the 18 holes that is today known as one of the finest in the area. There are plenty of beautiful views, but the stand-out hole is surely the short 13th – a semi-blind par-3 from an elevated tee.
Longniddry A course of two halves, Longniddry manages to blend elements of both links and parkland into one excellent layout. It’s not a long course, but an absence of par-5s leaves plenty of exacting par-4s to negotiate and ensures a thorough examination of anybody‘s golfing credentials.
One of the finest links in the world and a regular contender for the title of Best in Britain, Muirfield is an astonishing links. With cavernous bunkers, thick rough and very subtly contoured greens, it’s the complete golfing challenge. Universally regarded by the Tour Pros as the fairest of all the Open venues, it is a course that will reward good shots while meting out full punishment (ie the loss of a shot) on those that fail to make the grade. And it’s not just the course that is to be savoured - the historic clubhouse and golfing heritage make any trip to Muirfield an experience to be savoured.

We send thousands of golfers all over Scotland every year but I never have any hesitation in recommending East Lothian. Of course it has the big names that are all ‘must-plays’, but I love sending people to courses they’ve never heard of, like Kilspindie or the Glen, and then hearing them raving about them afterwards. East Lothian really does have the lot, on and off the course, and being so well connected it’s easy to get to. If you want a taste of the real Scotland, it’s perfect.

One of the beauties of links golf, particularly in East Lothian which enjoys its own unusual micro-climate, is the exceptional year round course condition. Dunbar is a prime example which uses the shores of the North Sea as the basis for its breathtaking layout. With The Open Championship returning to Muirfield in 2013, it’s the perfect time to sample the delights of the final qualifying courses and, of course, Muirfield itself.
