T

he year is nearly done. And for the sport of golf, another memorable one. A barometer of the year is the sport’s four majors — the Masters, the US Open, The Open Championship and the US PGA Championship. The first two majors, the Masters and the US Open, were both won by the same person. That was Jordan Spieth who rightfully was being hailed as golf’s new star. In the Masters, at Augusta National, he led from start to finish and scored a record-equalling total of 270, or 18 under par. His nearest rivals were four strokes in arrears and all this was achieved at the age of 21. That made Spieth the secondyoungest winner of the tournament at 21 years and eight months. The youngest winner is Tiger Woods who was 21 years and three months when he won in 1997 and when he also scored 18 under par. The Masters is held in April and Spieth confirmed his star status when taking out the US Open in June. Once again it was his age that was a talking point. He became the youngest to win the Masters and

Looking back at the majors of 2015 the US Open in the same year. The previous youngest, once again, had been Tiger Woods who was 26 when he won both events in 2002. Spieth was not the dominant force in the US Open as he was in the Masters. Dustin Johnson took most of the early headlines, being the leader after the first round and an equal leader after the third round. Even at the last of the 72 holes Johnson looked the winner. Johnson had a 12-foot putt for victory on the last green but missed. But he also missed the putt coming back and ended up with a three-putt to finish in a tie for second. It was heartbreak for Johnson who avoided the news media tent afterwards. The US Open was played for the first time at Chambers Bay in Washington. This was a relatively new course and the course’s greens came in for much criticism by many of the players. The greens were very fast but also very unpredictable. The greens certainly did not help Johnson’s cause on the last hole.

Johnson was back in the headlines for the year’s third major, The Open Championship. This event is golf’s most historic and the fact that this year’s event was being held at St Andrews (considered the home of golf), in Scotland, the anticipation was heightened. Johnson was the leader after each of the first two rounds. Commentators were saying the tournament was his for the taking because of his prodigious length off the tee which carried him beyond the treacherous pot bunkers on the fairways. But the tournament was beset with bad weather and Johnson was amongst many to succumb to the rain and high winds. The weather delays resulted in a Monday finish, the first time for 27 years. At the end of the 72 regulation holes there was a three-way tie for the lead between Zach Johnson (USA), Louis Oosthuizen (South Africa) and Marc Leishman (Australia). They went out to play four holes

to decide the winner and it was Johnson who prevailed by one shot over Oosthuizen. Leishman was two shots further back. It was Johnson’s second win a major following his victory in the 2007 Masters. From a New Zealand point of view, the story of The Open was the performance of Ryan Fox. The Kiwi golfer went through a qualifying series to gain a start and ended up finishing 49th – equal with Dustin Johnson — and a cheque of $US29,000. The final major, the US PGA Championship held in August, was staged at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin and no one would have begrudged the winner, Jason Day. He had collapsed on his final hole in the US Open at Chambers Bay after suffering a bout of vertigo and missed the three-way play-off in The Open at St Andrews by one shot. In the US PGA Championship he had taken the lead after the third round which he maintained to win with a score of 20 under par, a record for any major. Another great year, indeed.

KiwiPro Tour set to double to 20 tournaments By Paul Gueorgieff Editor Golfer Pacific

I

t’s one step at a time. That’s the attitude Hawke’s Bay husband and wife Terry and Barbara O’Donnell and their son Peter are taking with their newly-established professional golf circuit, KiwiPro Tour. The tour got under way this year with a total of 10 tournaments spread over seven months. This is a golf circuit not about to rival the PGA Tour in the United States where prizemoney often ranges from $US6-10 million. Instead the stake for each tournament was $7000 and there wasn’t a Jordan Spieth or Rory McIlroy in sight. But should any of the winners on the KiwiPro Tour become half as successful as Spieth or McIlroy then the KiwiPro Tour would have more than served its purpose. Terry O’Donnell, the tour’s financier, was satisfied with the first season but would like to see it take a step forward next year. “Next year the intention is to hold 20 tournaments,’’ Terry O’Donnell told Golfer Pacific. This year’s 10 tournaments were all staged in the North Island and O’Donnell said he would like to see KiwiPro Tour

KiwiPro Tour early 2016 schedule The first five events for the 2016 KiwiPro Tour have been confirmed as:

cross the Cook Strait to the South Island, although it may not happen immediately. “KiwiPro Tour intends to extend to the South Island eventually,’’ he said. While the tour did not go to the south this year, participation from the south did come to the tour, including Shaun Jones from Christchurch. “Shaun finished runner-up a record four times on the tour this year and he’ll be hoping his luck changes for the better in 2016,’’ O’Donnell said. He said a bigger effort would also be made to link the tour with other New Zealand tournaments. “For example, to achieve continuity, if players are participating in pro-ams in the

KiwiPro financier Terry O’Donnell and Tyler Hodge

Wairarapa then we will hold a KiwiPro Tour event in (nearby) Palmerston North so that players can minimise travel costs and maximise winning opportunities.’’ O’Donnell said he was undecided on how to spread the prizemoney for next year.

This year the tour started off with $5000 to winner but this was subsequently reduced to $3000 to the winner, therefore providing a greater spread of the remaining prizemoney. This was in response to consultation with players but O’Donnell said it did

not necessarily work. “As there was no appreciable increase in numbers of players we are re-thinking this strategy for next year where we may revert back to $5000 for first place. But this has yet to be decided.’’ While the tour is essentially for professionals there were some amateurs that got the chance to pit their skills against the pros. “At Cambridge the tour gave a start to 15-year-old Isaac Butcher while Shannon Holden from Auckland competed in many of the later events and visibly improved his game as the season went on.’’ O’Donnell said. O’Donnell, in fact, encouraged top amateurs to avail themselves the opportunity to compete in the events. Lynnette Brooky-Godleman, who won Brad Shilton two French Opens on the Ladies European

Gareth Paddison and Terry O’Donnell

Tour, became the first woman to play on the KiwiPro Tour when it came to her home course of Manor Park in Wellington. Some of the highlights of the year included Josh Carmichael and Peter Lee both winning twice on the tour. Tyler Hodge, from Levin, turned professional on the tour and racked up a win at Manor Park in Wellington while other winners were Nick Gillespie, James Betts, Brad Shilton, Scott Hill, and Gareth Paddison. O’Donnell said he would be delighted if any of those players took the next step up. “New Zealand golfers need to have the experience of real competitive golf before they move onto the larger tours overseas. KiwiPro provides that training and capacity-building platform for golfers to experience the real competitive environment of professional golf.’’

Hillier a Charles Tour winner at age 17 D

aniel Hillier has become the youngest male to win on New Zealand’s primary professional golf circuit, the Charles Tour. The Wellington 17-year-old won the Harewood Open in Christchurch to continue an outstanding 2015. Earlier in the year he had won the New Zealand Amateur Championship at the Titirangi Golf Club in Auckland and five months later he added the New Zealand Under-19 Championship at Shandon in Wellington. No more stunned at Hillier’s win in the Harewood Open was the player himself. “Wow, what a week,’’ Hillier said. “I’m over the moon, it’s been an amazing experience. I never thought I would be standing here as the winner this week.” Hillier had scores of 71, 66, 72 and 68 to finish at 11 under par. Because of Hillier’s amateur status the winner’s purse went to Waikato professional Jim Cusdin who was one shot back in second place. Hillier’s win didn’t come without stress after he made a double bogey on the 13th hole on the last day. That changed the leaderboard dramatically to then have a three-way tie for the lead alongside Cusdin and Martin Pettigrew. Cusdin had six birdies on the

front nine to put the pressure on Hillier but Cusdin’s second nine was mixed with brilliance and disappointment. Cusdin had a double bogey on the 16th hole and then followed up by a holing out for eagle on 17 and topped it off with a birdie on 18. Hillier was well aware of Cusdin’s challenge. “Looking at the scoreboards I saw that Jim was playing well and felt him coming,” Hiller recalled. “But I was feeling good as well and managed to keep it together coming down the stretch.” Hillier responded to Cusdin in style after his hiccup on the 13th. He had three birdies in the last five holes to shut out his

challenger. “My double (bogey) on the 13th came out of nowhere. I was playing solid up until then, but to finish the way I did after that was the best part of it without a doubt,” Hillier said. The win was clearly a highlight for Hillier but he was only looking forward to achieving more. “It’s definitely right up there with my two wins earlier in the year, certainly my best strokeplay victory. But hopefully I can keep tracking the way I am and do it again in the near future.” Sir Bob Charles, after whom the Charles Tour is named, was on course to watch the drama unfold and enjoyed what he saw from the new champion.

“It’s great to see the young talent in New Zealand playing well on the tour,” said Sir Bob “I watched young Daniel through the back nine and he had a bit of a slip up on 13, but to regather with three birdies after that was very impressive.” Meanwhile in the women’s division of the Harewood Open, victory went to Chantelle Cassidy who had won the same tournament the previous year. On both occasions Cassidy has won easily. In 2014 her winning margin was 13 shots and this year it was eight with scores of 74, 65, 71 and 72 to finish at six under par. “I’m really happy with how I played,’’ Cassidy said. “I stuck to the game plan (on the final day) and a couple of nice up and downs helped me along the way.”

A stepping stone to the Asia-Pacific Championship

N

ew Zealand’s top tournament for amateur golfers will have added significance next year. It has been announced that the 2016 New Zealand Amateur Championship will be held at the Royal Wellington Golf Club at Heretaunga in Upper Hutt. The tournament will be held from October 26-30 which is exactly a year before the same club hosts one of the world’s top amateur events, the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. There will no doubt be some players delay turning professional to remain eligible for the AsiaPacific event and next year’s New Zealand Amateur will provide a perfect opportunity for players to test their skills under

championship conditions at the course. Royal Wellington club captain Andrew Meehan echoed those sentiments. “Hosting the New Zealand Amateur will not only give our leading players a chance to play the course in competition conditions, it will also be a good rehearsal for the club that will host the marquee international event a year later,’’ Meehan said. As part of the New Zealand Amateur announcement, New Zealand prime minister John Key opened a new practice facility at Heretaunga. The practice facility comprises an all-weather coaching building with swing analysis technology, a 15-bay outdoor allweather teeing surface and a 60 x 40m grass teeing area.

Bay of Plenty wins Freyberg in a photo finish IN racing parlance, the winning margin was a nose. That was the outcome of the Freyberg Masters at New Plymouth when Bay of Plenty unleashed a big run in the home straight to win in a photo finish. Bay of Plenty had started the final day of the teams’ event for players aged over 35 in fourth place. In the morning round Bay of Plenty drew 2-1/2 each with Otago and in the afternoon beat Manawatu-Wanganui 3-2. Bay of Plenty’s cause was helped by Wellington beating North Harbour in the afternoon and at the end of the day there were five teams on six tournament points each. Bay of Plenty was declared the winner with 27-1/2 individual wins followed by Hawke’s Bay (24-1/2), Canterbury (23), Auckland (22-1/2) and Waikato (22). The Bay of Plenty team comprised Darryn Lowans, Blair Murdock, Steve

Heberley, Bryan Pirani and Jason Madden. It was Bay of Plenty’s second win in the tournament in three years, having also taken out the title in 2013. Bay of Plenty manager Ross Fowler said the team was playing for the late Tony Hewlett who was part of the 2013 victorious team.

He also believes these rankings are an important tool for New Zealand Golf tourism. “I hope it will encourage many local golfers to take a weekend road trip to play some of these special courses,’’ Whiley said. “Many overseas tourists travelling New Zealand wonder where they are going to play golf and many want to play the `local’ courses such as Walton, Rangatira and Roxburgh. Here they will really find some great Kiwi golf experiences and local hospitality.” New Zealand Golf Rankings is the authority in ranking our country’s best golf courses, with previous national top 25 rankings released in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Whiley said the rankings will be repeated next year with a team of PGA professionals and golf industry leaders.

On a percentage basis, Jack’s Point was the highest ranked golf course for all regions; Rangatira the most popular hidden gem and Tai Tapu the country’s favourite nine-holer. Whiley said in order to ensure an accurate reflection of the rankings, golfer’s votes for their own home course were removed as many saw their own courses as number one. This also removed any chance for ‘block voting’. Whiley was extremely pleased with the input from so many golfers around the country, including input from Sir Bob Charles and former New Zealand World Cup player, Denis “Yogi” Clark. tago golf professional Andrew Whiley recently completed the first New Zealand golf course regional rankings. Whiley, from Dunedin, believes this is the first regional rankings of New Zealand golf courses and the most extensive ever undertaken. With 776 respondents representing 114 golf clubs, the regional rankings were based on regions similar to the Super 15 rugby regions. Each golfer was asked to rank their top six golf courses, their favourite “ninehole” golf course and their “hidden gem”. Whiley, a columnist for Golfer Pacific, said golfers around the country enjoy debating their favourite golf courses with fellow golfers and now they had the opportunity to share their rankings with golfers from around the country. More importantly, he said, it was great to see golf courses that don’t normally get recognised actually being listed as special places to play golf. The top golf course in the northern (Blues) region was Kauri Cliffs with the hidden gem also being Kauri Cliffs. The top nine-hole course was Waiheke Island. In the Waikato-Bay of Plenty (or Chiefs region) it was Wairakei International that was rated as the number one course and the hidden gem being Walton Golf Club. The Wairakei nine-holer’ was the

Sir, I have just finished reading the editor’s inbox letter in the November issue and don’t agree with some of the writers comments. I too am a subscriber to the Coliseum golf app and find it excellent. Sure I had one or two problems to start with but their helpful crew were very good at getting problems sorted. The beauty I find is the ease of getting the online transmission from the portable computer (laptop or whatever) to the large screen TV is not restricted to cables. There is this magic piece of equipment called Chromecast which works very well with the Chrome browser. Once set up the system is simple. As soon as it is connected the golf transmission works independently from your portable computer (be it desktop or other). It works directly through your modem. In other words you can use your laptop etc for browsing the web if you want to without disrupting the golf transmission. The Chromecast dongel connects into any HDMI port on your TV (for those who have an early model flat screen TV like I have with only one HDMI port, there is available from “Dick Smith” a unit called an HDMI switcher which will give you another port to work with). At $150 for the year the PGA, LPGA and European tours are all available and you are able to watch transmission you may have missed (previous rounds or matches). This is fantastic value. I am one of thousands of senior (older players) who still enjoy our golf but also manage on a pension and can’t really afford about $1200 a year for Sky with the sports option. I am enjoying my golf now that I can follow what is happening in the professional ranks. If it returns to Sky, players like myself will no longer be watching the professional tours. All I can say to the writer is learn about Chromecast and start enjoying the golf on your TV again. The Chromecast unit is available through Noel Leemings (where I bought mine) or other retailers. What a celebration: Gold Coast World Masters’ 20th year

T

he Ladbrokes World Masters, Australia’s biggest and richest international tournament for club golfers, hosted its 20th annual tournament on the Gold Coast in the last week of October. Tournament organisers Go Golfing promised big things to celebrate the milestone and delivered the Gold Coast’s 4 best courses, 280 daily golf awards, $120,000 in prizes, nightly 19th Hole parties and glamorous welcome and presentation dinners. Many long-time participants rated this year’s Ladbrokes World Masters the best ever. “Great fun from go to whoa” (Lorraine Clark, New Zealand) “A real treat to play The Pines at Sanctuary Cove” (Laurie Littman, Melbourne) “So many golfers and so well organised” (Lanfen Hsieh, Philippines) “The comedian was sensational” (Tony Thomas, Brisbane) “Magnificent prizes” (Patrick Mullens, Gold Coast) winner of a return trip to the 2016 Ladbrokes Masters including accommodation, flights and $5000 cash from Ladbrokes. “Loved the entertainment” (Jenny Brooks, Melbourne) “The Gold Coast World Masters is the highlight of my golfing year” (Julie Pigram, Derby WA) For the first time the welcome dinner was hosted under the stars at Mercure Resort Gold Coast. Festivities got underway with a lucky draw for a $10,000 Go Golfing travel voucher won by Hiten Thakrar, of Indian heritage now living in Sydney and a member at Cromer. “I am still in shock, although my golfing buddies have plenty of ideas of where I should take them. The US Masters has always been on my bucket list and now I have a healthy deposit!” Renowned comedian Kenny Graham, whose stage persona is an affable drunk, had the crowd in stitches regaling stories that may well have been fact or fiction. According to tournament director Mark Hawley, the entertainment is a vital ingredient to fostering great fun and friendship among participants. “Comedy works well on the opening night. Guests relax, laugh and that sets the tone for the week. Sporting a different theme at the 19th Hole each night, the Beach Party and Country & Western nights were a big hit. Egg and spoon races, exercise bikes and blow up boat races in the resort pool sparked competitive streaks. Craft beer and wine tastings, golf trivia, karaoke and live bands each night – there was no shortage of entertainment.” Parties aside, 600 plus golfers teed off in the 4 round Championship. There are 15 tournament divisions based on age and handicap. You play with different golfers each day, but always with golfers your own age and similar

handicap. The four course rotation for all players was The Pines at Sanctuary Cove, Links Hope Island, The Glades and RACV Royal Pines Resort. While the tournament was celebrating its 20th year on the Gold Coast, this was the first time Go Golfing had been able to secure Sanctuary Cove’s private, members-only, The Pines course as a host venue. 57% of players rated The Pines at Sanctuary Cove as the best course they played, in spite of it having the lowest scoring average of 28.1 stableford points. Links Hope Island was the other standout course according to players with 35% rating it the best. The tournament boasts a prize pool valued upwards of $120,000 and 252 golf prizes are awarded to daily winners across the week. Championship winners received upwards of $700 in trophies and prizes, including latest release Srixon equipment, Golf Buddy GPS, Golf World gift vouchers and beautifully crafted necklaces were an added bonus for the ladies. Tournament sponsor Ladbrokes provided all participants with a free $25 bet on what state or country they thought the highest scoring player would come from. NSW and VIC were favourites, each retuning $100, while the payout on a ACT or Tassie win topped $350. Playing off 15, Ron Campbell from Castle Hill (NSW) scored 150 points, the best for the tournament, winning the Mens 66+ B Grade and big cheers from those who punted on a NSW victory. Ladbrokes also offered a $5,000 cash prize for anyone scoring a hole in hole during the Championship rounds. While the tournament has yielded 18 hole in ones, including 3 in 2012, none achieved the feat this year, although Perth’s Judy Rosser aced the 15th at Arundel Hills in the practice round and was awarded $500. The average winning score

across the 15 tournament divisions was just 137 points this year, further proof that the handicapping checks and adjustments made by tournament organisers Go Golfing are delivering a level playing field. Mark Hawley was in high praise of the tournament committee, “We review the 6 month playing history of all players. Past winners play off a reduced handicap. Players scoring consistently well have their handicap reduced during the tournament. We have undertaken a lot of measures to weed out the bandits.” Non golfing partners attend all of the tournament dinners and nightly socials and this year enjoyed a high tea, river cruise with lunch, Italian and French cooking classes. Testimony to the event’s enduring quality, 91 golfers have now played in 10 or more of the Gold Coast World Masters while Glenn Dodds from the Sunshine Coast and Dennis and Lorraine Chidlow have never missed a year since the event started in 1996. Lorraine celebrated her 70th birthday during the tournament and Dennis’ collection of tournament shirts from every year added nostalgia to the 20 year event tribute displayed in the foyer of Mercure Resort. This is a tournament with some amazing stats. Tournament host Peter McCarthy from Gold Coast based Go Golfing has shared some fun facts about the events’ 20 year history: • 60,811 rounds played on the Gold Coast’s resort courses • An estimated 183,000 golf balls lost or hit into the water • $1.72 million in prizes including 8 new cars and 30 overseas holidays • 4 weddings and no funerals – 4 couples who met at the tournament have got hitched • 2 lawsuits resulting from golfers running down other golfers in golf carts (reportedly by accident) Golf Fore A Cause, supporting Breast and Prostate Cancer Foun-

dations were the beneficiaries from this year’s charity raffle. Go Golfing’s World Masters events have now raised more than $229,000 for cancer research. Planning is already underway for the 21st edition of the Ladbrokes World Masters Golf Championship which runs 23-29 October 2016. Lakelands will return as a host course and organisers are confident of finalising The Pines at Sanctuary Cove, Hope Island and the redesigned Royal Pines which reopens just in time for the PGA Championship early December. Australian Outback Spectacular, with a brand new production, will be the host venue for the welcome dinner. The gala presentation dinner will return to Jupiters Casino ballroom. According to Go Golfing’s managing director Peter McCarthy, settling on an event package that suits the tastes and budgets of 700 people is a challenge. “Some want 5 star, others are on a budget. In recognition of this, next year in addition to the standard Tournament Package we will offer a Premium Package option. This optional package will include VIP seating with premium wines and beers at the tournament dinners, Club access at the host hotel, high speed internet access and a decadent 5 course degustation menu with matched wines. Go Golfing, recently voted Oceania’s Best Golf Tour Operator again in 2015 at the prestigious World Golf Awards, is Australia’s biggest organiser of events, tours and holidays for club golfers. Established in 1996, Go Golfing has an impressive portfolio of hosted golf tours as well as Masters (over 35’s) golf tournaments. In addition to the Ladbrokes World Masters these events include: 10-15 Jan 2016 - Wrest Point International Masters, Hobart 12-18 June 2016 - Centara World Masters, Thailand 4-10 September 2016 – Accor Vietnam World Masters.  For more information on Go Golfing tournaments visit www. gogolfing.net.au or freecall 1300 55 28 55.

Cambo: Professional golfers need balance in life

I

t’s not all about golf, golf and more golf to being a successful professional golfer. That was one point hammered home to three top New Zealand amateur players when they spent a week with Michael Campbell in Spain on a New Zealand Golf scholarship. Lachie McDonald, Munchin Keh and Hana-Rae Seifert attended the Michael Campbell Academy where they got to spend one-on-one time with the 2005 US Open winner, play golf at three top courses and have fitness screenings to develop train-

ing plans for each of them. But apart from that Campbell stressed that life away from the course was a key to success on the course. Campbell took the three New Zealand amateurs into his home and Seifert said it was an experience the three would not forget. “Playing volleyball at his home with his family and going out to dinner with his friends really epitomised one of Michael’s philosophies of having a holistic and balanced approach to life.“ Seifert said.

McDonald said it was an honour to be involved with Campbell. “The week on the whole was a very positive experience for me and to have input from a player that has been a professional for 25 years, played in 52 major championships and won around 16 events internationally was an absolute privilege,’’ McDonald said. “The insights I have gained are priceless and it has left me feeling very confident in the direction my game is heading.” With the US

Open trophy sitting on the dinner table, Campbell also recounted stories of him holding off Tiger Woods to win the US Open. Campbell said he was excited to continue supporting New Zealand’s brightest young players. “I really enjoy giving back to the game that has given me so much, so it was great to spend a week with our latest three scholarship recipients,’’ Campbell said. “They’ve got strong futures ahead of them. I will very much enjoy watching their progress.”

10  GOLFER PACIFIC December 2015

WE caught up with Lesley MacDonald, the new General Manager at ‘Whangaparoa Golf Club, to find out a bit more about her: “I started my career in legal and qualified as a Legal Executive in 1990. In 1992 I moved into mortgage finance at NZ Guardian Trust and became the Mortgage Administration Manager in 1995 and was there for 3 years before I moved to the UK. While I was at Guardian Trust I completed my Diploma in Management and Business. Whilst in the UK I worked for an IT Services company and implemented new payroll and finance systems, then moving to AOL UK Ltd as the Development Team Manager. This is the period I got into golf and played at courses all around the UK including The Belfry in Warwickshire and in my first year playing golf I broke 100 at Carnoustie (where I still have relatives living). I then had a break to have 2 beautiful girls, but volunteered for the National Childbirth Trust and worked in their fundraising and events team for Woking district. I then went back to finance part time until I started, and was General Manager of an IT Services company with my husband both in the UK and USA. We moved back to NZ in September 2012. My aims at Whangaparaoa are to increase membership levels by enabling more people who wouldn’t think they have the time, or ability to join the club, and also just to promote the club more. Improve its image and prominence as a first rate course, which it is. Also breaking down some incorrect perceptions that people have about golf and golf clubs. Improving our clubhouse, and promoting it for events as the location is spectacular and should be enjoyed by more people in the community. Taking control of the finances and implementing, together with the committee, a strong business plan. Golf is my passion, and I’m thrilled to be able to use my varied business skills in an area I’m passionate about, a dream come true!”

NZ Golf’s first president Tae Koh best of NZers at Nomura Cup in Abu Dhabi Patsy Hankins

P

ATSY HANKINS, the first president of New Zealand Golf, died suddenly at her home in Taupo. Hankins was one of the most respected golf administrators in the country and her legacy as a trailblazer in golf administration grew due to her long list of achievements and kind and gentle approach. From fostering the development of the women’s game to playing a key role in the amalgamation of men’s and women’s golf, Hankins was incredibly influential and leaves a long lasting legacy. Hankins was an accomplished player, representing Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley, but it was in administration that she really made her mark. She progressed to the board of Women’s Golf New Zealand in 2000 and four years later became its chairperson. It was at this time that she really started to make her influence. The process of the amalgamation of men’s and women’s golf was not easy

and it took a good two years to finalise the relationship. Hankins was a key figure, always remaining positive and realising that this would only be good for the game. When this happened and New Zealand Golf Incorporated came to being, she was elected the first president, a reflection of the esteem in which she was held. In 2012 she was elected women’s chairman of the International Golf Federation, a confirmation of her wonderful abilities as a contributor to the game. Her appointment was one of the biggest achievements by a New Zealand golf administrator. Not one to rest on her laurels, Hankins was bestowed one of the greatest honours in golf when she was offered membership at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club and was one of seven women who accepted membership to the prestigious club. Hankins died on October 22.

NEW ZEALAND finished fifth at the Asia-Pacific Teams Championship for amateur golfers, known as the Nomura Cup, in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The New Zealand team of Tae Koh, Joshua Munn, Luke Toomey and Nick Voke finished nine strokes behind the winner Japan in a competition where the best three scores out of four count towards the team’s total. Japan was 22 under par with a total of 842 while New Zealand’s total was 851, or 13 under par. Koh, from Auckland, was the leading New Zealand player. He was under par on each of the four days. He had scores of 70, 69, 71 and 69 for a nine-under par total of 279. Koh, who is considering becoming a professional in the near future, finished sixth on the individual standings for the tournament. Toomey, from Waikato, was the next best of the Kiwis. Toomey finished on two under par in 14th place while Voke was a shot back in 16th place. Munn opened with two even par rounds but struggled on the weekend with rounds of 74 and 76 to have the non-counting scores. Chinese superstar Cheng Jin won the individual event with a dominant 13-under par total. It continued his outstanding form from the 2015 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship which he won earlier in the month in Hong

Kong. New Zealand Golf’s high performance manager Gregg Thorpe was, overall, pleased with the result. “While all four guys have had solid weeks in pretty foreign conditions, the standard at these events nowadays requires a couple of them to play exceptionally well and go low.’’ Thorpe said. “It was pleasing to see Nick and Luke step up on the international stage. The reality is that some of the guys may look to join the professional ranks but currently as we track towards the World Team Championships next year in Mexico, things are in good shape. “Of course at the start of the week, we were there to win, but to finish in the top five, and to finish ahead of the Aussies and Chinese shows we are on track for Mexico.”

Otago runs away with Invitational I

n one of the more dominant performances the tournament has seen, Otago won the SBS Bank Golf Invitational, a forerunner to the Interprovincials tournament a fortnight later. The five-man Otago team of Duncan Croudis, Chris Snow, Brent McEwan, Nick Borren and Fraser MacLachlan were quite simply untouchable. No other team came close to having all five players in top form and opposition teams would have been envious that Otago had noncounting scores of 75 and 74 on the final day. The best four scores counted towards each team’s total. Croudis said the result could not have been more fitting to Otago captain Brent McEwan. “We are so happy to get the win for our captain Brent McEwan who is retiring from representative golf at the end of the year,” Croudis said. Otago won the tournament, held at the Invercargill Golf Club, by a massive margin of 28 strokes. North Harbour snuck into second place while Bay of Plenty and Wellington faltered on the final day to finish third and fourth equal respectively. Wellington shared fourth with Northland. Wellington’s situation was made harder with Daniel Hillier having to miss the final round,

in order to return home early to prepare for a school exam. However nothing can be taken away from Otago’s stunning performance. Said team manager Bill Trewern: “It’s been 35 years, but worth the wait.’’ McEwan, who plays at No 1 for Otago, added: ``I’m so proud of all the lads, this is a great moment in my career.” McEwan is a former New Zealand representative and long-

time No 1 player for Otago. He announced at the prize giving this was his last Invitational. He said he was retiring to spend more time with his family. The tournament’s individual standings was won by Ryan Chisnall by one shot over Vaughan MaCall.

NZ Open to remain in Queenstown THE New Zealand Open will remain in Queenstown for at least a further six years and maybe as much as 11 years. A new co-hosting agreement has been signed between Millbrook Resort, The Hills and New Zealand Golf for the 20172022 period with an option to extend it for an additional five years. The current agreement, held by The Hills and Sir Michael Hill’s family, ends next year. The Hills has been the course where the final two rounds of the New Zealand Open have been held but under the new agreement that honour will alternate each year between The Hills and Millbrook. She Loves Golf campaign a step in the right direction

I

n my view, golf has historically done a very poor job of encouraging more women to participate in the game. In the 10 years or so that I have been involved as an administrator I have heard a great deal of talk about the need to engage with women and encourage more women players into the game. However, little progress has been made. At this point, just 25 percent of club members and approximately 10 percent of casual participants are female. These are extraordinary low numbers. I’m not sure why we don’t embrace this market segment more vigorously given the huge opportunities. While, no comfort, we are certainly not alone as I observe the same great desires stated in many international markets with a corresponding small amount of action.

As a start in this area, we are now three weeks into the national She Loves Golf campaign and I’m pleased to report an excellent level of activity including the news media, social media and great initiatives from clubs around the country. Launched on November 1, the nationwide She Loves Golf campaign will see events up and down the country including pop-up street activities, competitions and club open days. There truly is something for everyone and if you aren’t involved yet, I encourage you to bring your female friends, workmates or family members along to a club to try this great game. Our goal with this initiative is to inspire more New Zealand women to participate in the game of golf and to assist, we’ve recruited five high profile and diverse New Zealand women, of vastly mixed experience levels, who have committed themselves to spreading the word about She Loves Golf. Our ambassadors are Toni Street, Lydia Ko, Amber Peebles, Jamie Curry and Laura McGoldrick. Each of these fantastic women are doing a great job to help promote the game of golf and remove some of the negative perceptions associated with the game. While it is early days, we are pleased to have received excellent reports from clubs around the country who are embracing the campaign:

Feedback includes: Kevin Armstrong, Motueka Golf Club: “Fifteen girls are enjoying weekly coaching lessons, with two new women taking up membership.” Marnie McGuire, Waikato: “Eleven ladies signed up for lessons during the day at Te Awamutu and 14 for the after work clinic. Nineteen ladies signed up for lessons on Saturday afternoons at Matamata Golf Club. So great numbers of women in the Waikato flocking to learn the game, majority are aged 30-50 which is certainly the demographic we need. Potentially 44 new women into the game at two courses. Awesome!” Robert Rookes, Waitemata Golf Club: “Thanks to the help from New Zealand Golf with posters and getting it on the website, our Girls Night Out is full. Five weeks of lessons, complimentary wine, 5.30pm on Thursdays. Girls are having a great time.” Please make sure that you follow the #SheLovesGolf campaign as it rolls out across the country. We hope it will play a small part in encouraging more kiwi females to participate in the game. www.lovegolf.co.nz www.facebook.com/lovegolfnz www.twitter.com/lovegolfnz www.instagram.com.lovegolfnz

Play some hidden gems this summer

E

arlier this month, New Zealand Golf Rankings released its 2015-16 regional golf rankings. The regions were based on the Super 15 rugby regions such as Auckland (Blues), Waikato-Bay Of Plenty (Chiefs) and lower North Island (Hurricanes). A total of 776 golfers responded from around the country, representing 114 golf courses in New Zealand. This was the first time golfers from around the country were invited to be involved in the ranking process. In addition they were asked to pick their hidden gem and their favourite nine-hole golf courses. I am the organiser of New Zealand Golf Rankings and I invited all golfers to review these rankings and to consider playing the golf courses in their region. There are some amazing courses that appear on the rankings list. I have played just over half of the golf courses on the list, and there are some excellent places I have yet to play. If you happen to live in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty region, for example, then I hope you have already played the Walton or Putaruru golf courses. Both are unique and have some great holes. They are definitely worth the drive, if they are not close by. If you are planning on playing Putaruru, then I also suggest you play the great little nearby nine-hole golf course of Okoroire. It probably has the best 19th hole in the country. The same applies to the Highlanders region (Otago and Southland). If you truly want a unique golf experience

down in this part of the country, then you will want to play Roxburgh. This is a local favourite — when they host their Open tournament most of the top local players all make the trip to play. The course winds through local schist stone valleys which result in some really odd bounces but that’s one of the unique charms of the course. The best time to play is in March and April as you can also sample the local stone fruit that makes this area a famous part of the country. What was pleasing, as I went through the 776 results,

New Zealand has many great little country golf courses that do not get the full respect they should. Many golfers should experience the charms of golf courses like Waverley, Stratford and Inglewood in Taranaki.

was that everyone had opinions on what they liked about there favourite hidden gem golf courses. It wasn’t just all about the conditioning of golf course’s greens or “wow factor” but how much the golfers enjoyed the total golf package. Here are a few snippets from the submissions: “... because it is still largely unknown, is a real challenge and is a welcoming environment for visitors”, “Golfers here always seem to really enjoy their golf. It is a very friendly relaxed place”, “Great atmosphere, welcoming clubhouse, interesting holes and a little out of the way – i.e.; not crowded” and “... course design. great greens, grooming, unique location and environment”. New Zealand has many great little country golf courses that do not get the full respect they should. Many golfers should experience the charms of golf courses like Waverley, Stratford and Inglewood in Taranaki. One of my own personal favourites is Taihape. It is one of those courses that many of us drive by and say “one day I will stop there and play”. I enjoyed playing there on a couple of occasions and it was always fun. Again, some great golf holes and a memorable experience just like its neighbouring course of Rangatira in Hunterville. So this summer, please take the time to stop and play some of these wonderful country golf courses. You will honestly enjoy a great day of golf and if you are lucky you will get a great feel for the local area.

Golf’s drug testing regime needs transparency T he revelations of widespread drug usage amongst Russian athletes (and by implication, other countries as well) have cast a huge shadow not only over athletics, but sport in general as we head towards the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro a few short months from now. For many years the world of golf has almost completely ignored the issue of drugs, perhaps reasoning that anything in this area was likely to reduce a golfer’s performance, rather than help it. But the inclusion of golf in the Olympics has forced a sea change in this thinking. In recent times Tiger Woods waged a long, one man battle to get drug testing introduced on the PGA Tour, alleging regular use of steroids and beta blockers by some touring professionals. The tour finally introduced a drug testing regime in 2008, but it has been characterised by controversy and a lack of transparency ever since. A couple of high profile cases have not helped. In 2014 Dustin Johnson was supposedly suspended from the tour for six months for cocaine usage, apparently his third drug related offence over a three year period. However, the official line was that he was taking “six months voluntary leave of absence”. Back in January 2013, Vijay Singh was suspended for 90 days for using the deer velvet product “Ultimate Spray”, because it was believed to contain the growth hormone IGF-1. The problem for the tour was that al-

though IGF-1 was on their list of banned substances, “Ultimate Spray” was not, nor was it on the World Anti Doping Agency’s (WADA) blacklist. The tour quickly backed down and withdrew it’s action against Singh in April 2013. By then the controversy had spread to our shores to target Sir Bob Charles, because of his endorsement and usage of a deer velvet product. Certain factions of the New Zealand media were even suggesting that Sir Bob should be retroactively stripped of his NZ PGA Championship titles, which was not only ridiculous but also an outrageous slur against someone who has given so much to the game of golf. Meanwhile, Singh’s lawyers filed suit against the PGA Tour for substantial damages, including the loss of his Callaway contract after the announcement of his suspension. That suit has been percolating for two years, with over 150 documents tabled during the process. Both sides have asked for summary judgement, but the likely next step is a jury trial in 2016 or 2017. Several other players and commentators have weighed into the dispute, including John Daly who claimed that the random testing procedures used by the tour were a myth, citing his own experience in the Valspar Championship where he had been tested for six years in a row.

The common theme is a lack of transparency. Nobody knows who has been returning positive tests, and which sanctions, if any, have been applied. In March 2015, WADA’s director general, New Zealander David Howman, was also critical of the PGA Tour’s anti-doping policy, noting that: “There are gaps in the programme, and that means someone might not be tested or might not be detected”.

From May 2016, “Olympic golfers” will be entered into the Olympics testing pool, which means they may be subject to blood tests and whereabouts tests against the complete list of WADA banned substances. As the fields for the men’s and women’s event won’t be finalised until July 11, 2016, based on world rankings on that date, two questions arise: who will be tested in the lead up period and are the tours concerned equipped to do this? It is not a trivial matter, because golf is effectively on probation for the next two Olympic Games, and may or may not continue as an Olympic sport beyond 2020. It would be a tragedy if a failed drug test or perceived system failure within the industry’s testing procedures was the tipping point for a negative decision. At the very least, golf must become totally transparent over its testing regime and this needs to be led by the PGA Tour.

Anthony Barkley

NZPGA Professional

Anthony Barkley is Golfer Pacific’s Golf professional contributor. He is head professional at Rotorua Golf Club. “Ant” is responsible for many aspects of play at the club. One of the main things that he sees his role is to help people enjoy their golf more. Over the coming month’s he will write these articles with this intention of writing about club fitting, coaching, the mental game and will include the occasional review of new products.

Coaching Schools, should I or not? C

oaching schools have been around for many years at various areas around the country. Generally they consist of 3-4 days of tuition and practice including playing under the watchful eye of a PGA professional. They are quite intensive and each player will leave knowing they have been to a three day school. The costs of these do vary between $500 (our GOLF180 school) and $1000 as some will be at resort courses or club courses such as ours. It’s about what you see as value for money as some will have higher expenses than others. So will attending a coaching school benefit you? As a golf coach we generally see a client for 30-45 minutes. We often use video or like myself, may use a Flight Scope Launch Monitor during lessons. The environ-

ment is controlled with a nice flat surface so we can focus on swing related matters until we get to a point where a more uncontrolled environment is used or we go to the course. Can we do this is in 30-45 minutes? Not a chance. So what happens at a coaching school? Clients work as a group but are generally coached as individuals. You work on a specific element with the coach and time is available for guided practice. Guided practice is when you are given aspects to work on to improve an element of your game such as bunker shots. You then practice under supervision of your professional making your practice more effective which equals quicker and better results. Time is an issue in regard to guided practice so under normal coaching practices it’s not included. I remember living in South Ko-

into play but under supervision from the PGA coach. Learn to play of side hills, down hills, into the wind and how to get out of trouble. You then get to work on the same element the next day or progress to something new specific to a different section of your game. Then again head onto the course to put it into play.

rea and visiting driving ranges to get my golf fix. Players used to hit balls like machines but at the same time coaches seemed to cruise from player to player. They would walk down the line watch-

ing each person helping when needed. This is what I would call guided practice and does work alongside individual coaching. With a golf school we also get on the course and put changes

The value to the client in my opinion is much higher than just doing the normal lessons. Don’t get me wrong as these are still very valuable but if you can commit to three full days of golf and be prepared to learn lots you will come out of it with a better understanding of your game as a whole. This is why I have set up the GOLF180 coaching schools here in Rotorua as I think it’s a great option for optimal learning. Maybe you could give one a go.

GOLF EVENT

TSB Bank Nelson Festival Of Golf 2016 By Derek Drysdale, Tournament Director

W

e are delighted to announce that TSB Bank has joined us as a Major Sponsor for our next tournament in May, 2016. One of the ‘must play’ events in the New Zealand golfing calendar, the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf has it all - one round of teamplay in teams of four, followed by three rounds of individual stableford competition in separate divisions. There will be one women’s division and two men’s divisions. On offer will be daily stableford prizes per division, as well as an overall daily gross prize per division. With a varied array of prizes on offer, we’re delighted to again be offering all competitors the chance to win a car for getting a hole in one, on the allotted holes during the tournament. Our long putt competition will again bring lots of fun to the week, and with a major prize at the end of it, it’s worth getting on that practice green early. Winners will be decided on each player’s accumulated total from the three individual rounds played. As in previous years we are again putting up some great novelty prizes and lucky draws to keep everyone in the hunt for a reward. After suffering a couple of windy days during our previous events in late October, we have moved the tournament to a new date on the calendar in the hope of providing entrants the beautiful weather that our region is famed for. Hopefully the new dates in early May will offer playing conditions that will provide competitors with chances to shoot great scores in calmer conditions – Making entry to the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf a great competition for players of all abilities to enter. The format has also changed slightly for this next tournament with the weeks itinerary as follows:

SUNDAY 1st MAY: Registration at Nelson Golf Club between 1pm and 3pm. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, confirmed that from 3pm onwards on Sunday 1st May, Nelson Golf Club will offer all competitors courtesy of the course to go out and play some golf to get a feel for the conditions. the

Day 2: Motueka Golf Club tournament committee would like to thank the Nelson Golf Club for this generous gesture, as I am sure all the visitors to the area would like to take up that offer.

MONDAY 2nd MAY: Shotgun start – to be played over the wonderful Nelson Golf Links. This is our only Team Day for the tournament, with everyone playing in teams of four, with plenty of team prizes up for grabs. No individual scores will count towards the individual weekly total and the team section will only apply on the Monday. For anyone entering individually or in couples, you will be matched up into teams for the day. Just let us know when you complete your entry form and we’ll arrange it for you. After play on Monday there will be the Long Putt Qualifying Round, so make sure you have a shot at this fun event as it proved very popular last time round. Qualifiers will go into a shoot-out on Friday with the chance of winning a major prize. The Team Day prize giving will take place in the clubhouse at close of play.

TUESDAY 3rd MAY: Shotgun start at Motueka Golf Club. This is the first of three daily rounds, in handicap divisions, which count toward the accumulative individual score for the week. Daily prize giving will take place in the clubhouse after

Day 3: Green Acres Golf Club play to reward the best players of the day. New Zealand golf legend, Sir Bob Charles recently played at Motueka and described it as one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. He was not wrong and you will love this beautiful tree lined parkland course.

WEDNESDAY 4th MAY: A rest day! If, in fact, you need a rest…. we are aware that some of you just can’t get enough golf, so we’re looking at a new extra option for you for the Wednesday, so keep an eye on our website for further news! Alternatively you can enjoy some of the many other fabulous things to do in the Nelson / Tasman Region, there’s plenty to choose from.

THURSDAY 5th MAY: Shotgun start. Played at Greenacres Golf Club, the second round in the individual competition, in handicap divisions could be called “moving day”, so keep those scores low! The daily prize giving will again take place in the clubhouse after the day’s play. Greenacres golf course has outstanding views no matter where you look. The course is a great test of golf which will make you think about that next shot on every hole. As their website says, “it is the Best Island Golf Course”.

A word from our sponsors: TSB Bank: “We’ve been New Zealand owned and independent for over 160 years. During that time we’ve grown and evolved, as we have, so has our ability to give back. Sponsoring this event is just one more way we can say ‘thanks’ for your role in our journey, and for making Nelson an even better place to live.” Brent Williams, Manager

Taylor Made Golf: An ever present in our sponsors list, we have been very fortunate to build up such a relationship with everyone at Taylor Made and we thank them for their continued support.

FRIDAY 6th MAY:

Total Golf:

Shotgun start for this final round is again at the Nelson Golf Links. Played on wonderfully true greens it will offer everyone the chance to putt their way to glory. Today will determine the winners of each division. The qualifiers for the putting shoot-out will take part in the final Putt-Off in front of the assembled competitors....no pressure, eh? The Major Prize Giving will take place in the Nelson Clubhouse in the evening hosted by The 19th Cafe & Bar. Nelson Golf Links: A wonderful golf course which has recently hosted both the NZ Amateur Championships and the NZ Senior Championships. Being chosen to host these great tournaments is indeed a great accolade from New Zealand Golf. I am sure that Superintendent Brendan O’Hara and his team will have the course at its best for all the competitors involved. I would like to thank our sponsors at this time, as without them we couldn’t put things together at this level of competition.

Glyn Delany and his team at Total Golf are proud to be involved with the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf. “We thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the competitors at the previous events and we will be more than happy to provide them with our professional services during the next tournament.” Glyn Delany, Total Golf

Mike Perro Real Estate: “I wish every success to everyone involved in this tournament, and if you’re visiting the area and decide you want to move here, I’ll be happy to be of service. Of course, for all the local golfers, I would be delighted to assist them in selling their property.” Shelley Carppe, Mike Perro Real Estate

Entering the TSB BANK NELSON FESTIVAL OF GOLF is very easy, just visit our website at, www.nelsongolf.co.nz/festivalofgolf Entry forms are available online, as well as other useful information regarding accommodation etc. If you would rather speak to someone in person, please call Allison O’Donnell on 03-548-5029 then option 3, and Allison will be happy to deal with your enquiry. GOLF TRAILS NEW ZEALAND 9 HOLE MASTERS TOURNAMENT

NORTHLAND

SBS INVITATIONAL THE Northland men’s team of Luke Brown (The Pines), Kadin Neho (Whangarei), Sheldon Kearns (Waipu), Taylor Gill (Kerikeri) and Lee Neumann (Northland – captain)performed well in tough conditions to finish in a tie for fourth place at the annual SBS Invitational at Invercargill Golf Club, Otatara played last month. The 72 hole strokeplay competition features teams of five from 13 District Associations along with a team from the NZ PGA. The best four of five scores count towards the team score for each of the four rounds. The start was not what the Northland lads were after, struggling to adapt to the wintry conditions with typically strong winds making scoring difficult the team found themselves at the bottom of the field. Showing the fight this side has become known for in recent years the guys bounced back to record the second best team score in the afternoons second round and improve their standing. Another solid showing in Sunday mornings third round saw the team continue to move up the leader board and the team again posted the second best team score in the final round to move into fourth alongside Wellington.

THE 2nd New Zealand 9 Hole Masters Tournament has concluded with Bay of Islands club members winning three of the six divisions. The event was played on Saturday, November 7 at Bay of Islands Golf Club. The 110 plus strong field was split into six groups, men and women by handicap, with local members Bruce Honeybone convincingly winning the men’s 2nd Division, and Jinni Park winning the lead group for the women, by two points Honeybone scored 62 stableford points, in the 3-day, 27-hole national tournament that attracted players from around the North Island. Runner-up in the men’s 2nd division was Matarua’s Chris Fenny with 56 points, with Whangarei’s Michael Olsen a further two shots back. Park won the top women’s group with a score of 60 points, two ahead of Joanne Brunker and 4 clear of 3rd place getter, Liz Furey – both Brunker and Furey Northland members. In the top men’s Division defending champion Frank Weber could not catch Keith Stone from Warkworth who posted a top score of 22 in the final round today. Overnight leader Wayne Johnston (Ngaruawahia) only managed 16 points today, slipping to 2nd place, tied with Weber. Final scores from the top three players in this division were 61 for Stone, with We-

ber and Johnston both on 57. In the two other women’s divisions, Gail Cash (Warkworth) won the 3rd Division, with 58 points, on a countback from Northland’s Cherie Finlayson. In third place was another Northland club member, Bev Smith, with 57 points. With the long-term future of their club in doubt after their farm-owned land has been recently sold, Jacky Fenney from Matarua noted that her win might be the last ‘swansong’ for Matarua members. Fenney amassed 57 points, 5 ahead of Judi Dooling (Warkworth) with Ruth Harvey (Warkworth) in third place with 51 points. As part of the 9-hole initiative, Bay of Islands Golf Club organisers welcomed higher handicap players to enter, competing in their own division. Playing off their ‘local’ club handicaps, Ros Simpson (Bay of Islands) was the top scoring lady with 57 points, the same scored posted by Bruce Young from Northland in this group. The Bay of Islands introduced this tournament in 2014, with the support of New Zealand Golf, as a result of the growing interest and membership of 9-hole golf. 9-hole golf was first mooted by the then Women’s Golf Board in 1994 with the first 9-hole competition held in 1996. The men’s game adopted the reduced form of membership in 2006 and there are now over 8200 9-hole registered members. The 9-hole Masters is open to both registered 18 and 9 hole members, and is timely with the recent changes by NZ Golf to have

With a win over Wellington on Saturday morning 5.5 / 2.5 and a halve with Tasman (4/4) in the afternoon the stage was set for Sunday morning to be a shootout between North Harbour and Canterbury for the title. On Sunday morning North Harbour came out firing to be in a slightly stronger position at the half way stage and on the back nine pulled away to a 5.5 /2.5 victory. This marks the first time North Harbour have won the event since 2011. A great effort, especially since top players Jason Gulasekharam and Chang-gi Lee were unavailable due to other commitments.

GOLF TRAILS final year as the North Harbour women’s president and serving on the executive. She has been involved heavily with the association for over 10 years and we will all still be staying in touch a lot as you have more time for golf at Pupuke. Well done Sandie and congratulations on your award, most deserving to say the very least!

NORTH HARBOUR FINISH 2ND AT SBS INVITATIONAL DESPITE a poor start that had the team in 8th place after the 36 holes on Saturday, the North Harbour SBS team showed their fighing spirit in a fantastic comeback on the 36 holes Sunday to fight their way back up the leader board and have finished 2nd out of the 15 teams in Invercargill. With difficult conditions (especially on Saturday) where wind ripped through the bottom of the south island it was a great warm up on the course that will host the interprovincial in a few weeks. The best individual result in the team was from Cam Jones who finished T10th and Otago won the title by a large margin with some great performances. Well done Jason Gulasekharam, Mark Hutson, Changgi Lee, Jake Meenhorst, Cam Jones and manager George Newlove on a great come back on Sunday.

North Harbour during her record breaking amateur career has pledged her name and financial assistance to the tournament and we are so thrilled to have her support. North Harbour will now have a major junior event to go along with our other premier events (North Harbour Men’s Stroke Play, Women’s Provincial Match Play and North Harbour Seniors/Masters men). More details will be released in the coming weeks/months as we build up to a tournament we have every intention of making a little special. Watch this space!

PATRONS TROPHY AT REDWOOD THE format for the Patrons Trophy last played in November was a great success. The competition saw a full field of 30 pairs playing shots from positions on the course they didn’t know existed. The theme of a “FUN” day joining the Ladies and Men’s Membership was embellished by all. Most notable was the Shocking Pink wig worn for 18 holes by Mr/Mrs Grahame Lillie or Gina as she was affectionately known as on the day. Gina certainly upstaged his partner Jo McKinstry whose hair colouring was tame in comparison. The trophy was taken away by Vessela Lewis and Scott Wood with Annmarie Angus and John Booth finishing close runners up. The club had an excellent prize table thanks to sponsorship from Chico’s Restaurant, Swanson RSA Restaurant and Dale Borland Marketing the holding company for the Greenstone & Paua Factory Shop. Every player received a prize and players were encouraged to clean the table of the remaining 25 prizes as they lef t. Great to see Michael Rhee trying out his fishing gloves as he cast his way thru the car park.

Thanks to Waikato Kia who sponsored a brand new Kia Rio for a hole in 1 – unfortunately not struck due to the windy conditions on the day – it was a difficult shot into the 14th green. Glen Buckland – Peninsular Resort, Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast – sponsored a “7 night 3 bedroom apartment package” which was won by Aubrey Fretwell. Many thanks to all of the hole sponsors as well.

MUDDY RIVER TOURNAMENTSUCCESSFUL NEW FORMAT THE annual Waikato Veterans Association Muddy River tournament, traditionally held over three days at Paeroa,Te Aroha and Thames courses, took on a fresh look this year. After considering a number of options to hopefully overcome some

common problems confronting most clubs when filling muti-day tournament fields, it was decided to introduce a one day Ambrose format with three players (one car load) constituting a team. Women were also welcomed into the event for the first time. Comments from players and organizers indicated that the new concept was well received, with a full field of thirty six teams playing on a well presented course at Te Aroha on November 23 in weather conditions which could not have been better. While the majority of teams came from the three home clubs, twenty others clubs from throughout the Waikato, Auckland and Bay of Plenty regions were represented. Tournament committee spokesman, Murray Newby said that everyone involved was grateful for the continued major sponsorship for the Muddy River event provided by Toyota Signature Class Cars, Harcourts Realty (Paeroa and Thames) and Twentymans Funeral Services. Players and supporters were reminded of the need to at least consider approaching the tournament’s sponsors when doing future business in real estate or the motor trade. In his after match comments Adrian Catran (Twentymans) wished everyone good health but also reminded those present of his company’s services should they be needed over the coming year. He then presented the Dead Last Trophy (the Ashes) to the winners on the day. Results: Overall Winners of the Tournament (by lot) John Mohn, Robin Tankard, Bill Cressy (Ngahinepouri) Runners Up: Terry Bolton, Chian Ho, Peter Algar (Te Aroha) Third: Alan Sarjant, John Hayward, Barry Flooks. (Hauraki) Fourth: Marion Edgecombe, Alison Junge, Heather Jobson. GOLF TRAILS Living and still working in Whangamata, you’re never 100% sure you can get out mid-week, so I was late to the tee and took my chances. With Bob on 39, Noel 40 and Yogi on 24, I thought I’d be waiting a while. Then suddenly on the first tee- for the first real time in my 30 years of golf, it dawned on me. There’s nothing you can do about this. So just relax and enjoy. I had 5 boogies and 5 birdies, including the last 2 holes. The 17th is a longish Par 3 over the water by the road to Wentworth Valley. It’s a challenging hole on the pretty side of the course and I was right by the pin. Closest for the day and my second 2. Already I have 45 points- I’m thinking “gee, a par would be nice”. A heavy 2nd left me 80 from the pin. Took out my Cleveland 52- relaxed into the swing and hit onto the blind green. Felt good, looked good- it was. 10 inches from the hole. I tapped in for a birdie and walked off with par for the course. Then it starts to dawn on you, I shot par. Forget the birdies, the eagles even the hole in one- nice but often a little lucky. No, this was 18 holes of consistency and accuracy and it’s every golfers dream. I shot 70 – 13 handicap, nett 57. Less than 2% of golfers shoot par or better and with my swing you have to wonder, how. But I did and it feels amazing. The picture is of Noel Pease my playing partner holding up my scorecard, we of course won the beer and the day.

MEN’S SBS TEAM FINISH 7TH IN SOUTHLAND THE Waikato Men’s Team competed last month in the annual SBS Invitational held at the Invercargill Golf Club. Brutal wind and rain punsihed the players on Day 1 and scoring of all teams re-

flected just how tough it was. Bay of Plenty was got off to the best start on Day 1 with a round 1 total of 295. The only team to break the 300 mark. The Waikato boys were next best on 305 with Otago and Wellington a further shot behind. The Manawatu/Wanganui were best in Round 2 with a combined team total of 299, the only team breaking 300 in round 2. Waikato totalled 309 and had slipped back a couple of places as Otago posted 301 and Wellington 305. Conditions were tough but spirits werent down after the first day’s play. The Waikato team were off early on Day 2 and were looking to make a hot start to climb their way up the leaderboard. Unfortunately, the hot start they were after didn’t show up on Day 2 and the Waikato team went on to post a team total of 305 in Round 3, in much more scoreable conditons. Other teams took full advantage of the conditions and the hosts (Southland) posted a Round 3 total of 285, five shots better than that of Otago. Otago went on in round 4 to post the low score of 287 and claim the title by an enfatic 28 shots over North Harbour (1212). Bay of Plenty were 3rd on 1214, while Northland and Wellington shard 4th on 1216. Canterbury took 6th spot 1219 and Waikato followed in 7th spot on 1221. A tough weekend for the boys, but a lot learnt, some of the boys will be going back in two weeks time well prepared for the Men’s Toro Interprovincials, where they will look to go back to back after last year’s win at the St Andrews Golf Club in Hamilton.

Denzel Ieremia was the standout from Waikato, finishing in 6th spot individually on plus 7. Denzel shot rounds of 75, 73, 73 and 74. Waikato number 1 and captain Luke Toomey was next best finishing in 19th position.

KIWI’S WIN ASIA PACIFIC SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP THE New Zealand Seniors Team has won the teams event at the 2015 Asia Pacific Senior Amateur Championship, played October 14-16 at the Nanshan Hot Springs Golf Club near Qingdao, China.

A great final round of two under par 70 by New Zealand’s Frank Borren was the highlight in a very strong team effort. The individual championship saw the runaway leader Eduardo Bagtas from the Philippines maintain his lead for a win over Frank Borren with Waikato’s Andrew McKechnie in third place. Waikato golfer Andrew McKechnie scored rounds of 76, 76, 74 for a tournament total 226, fellow New Zealand teammate Frank Borren was three shots better with a tournament score of 223, whilst the overall winner scored a total of 219.

WHANGAMATA WOMEN’S MASTERS THE Inaugural 2015 Seeka Kiwifruit Whangamata Women’s Masters Golf tournament was held recently at the Whangamata Golf Club. 124 contestants from 29 clubs including one from Australia participated in the three day event over 54 holes. The weather gods behaved and turned on a warm and cloudless final day. Restricted to women golfers over the age of 40 and modelled on the hugely popular Seeka Kiwifruit Mens Masters also run by Whangamata, the tournament had a full

field only one day after the opening day for entries. Entertainment provided during the tournament included a fashion parade and wine tasting session on the Friday evening, and a buffet dinner and a 1960’s “Beside the Seaside” music hall cabaret topped off a very entertaining Saturday evening. Susan Hancock of Matamata held her nerve and sank the putts that mattered to win the Open Gross with a 3 round gross score of 235, followed by Akarana’s Raewyn Riggir on 237. Third place went to Te Aroha golfer Trish McBride on 244. The Open Nett winner was Whangamata’s Jeanne Wilson on 193, from Debbie Carney of Tahuna on 201, and Dianne Sweeney of Walton on 205. The Open Stableford competition was won by Jan Morgan of Walton with 122 points, from Lynda Stratton of Pukekohe with 121, and Robin Groombridge of Warkworth and Betty Gee of Matarua third equal with 115. The Whangamata Golf Club wants to thank all participants for contributing to a memorable weekend of golf and entertainment, and help make this inaugural tournament such a success.

Playing for the Shergold Trophy, sponsored by Tauranga Citroen and the Omokoroa Country Estate. The course was in excellent condition with the greens running at just under 10 on the stimpmeter. Not too fast but fast enough to make the greens quite tricky but still enjoyable for the competitors. Four days of hard fought matchplay ensued and stories were being told of being up or down, winning and losing, extra holes being played and in some cases where they walked in from hole 15. It all came down to the wire with Doug and Cath Matthews all square with Jerry and Julia Kuggeleijn coming down the last. GOLF TRAILS CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS DAY WONDERFUL weather and some very interesting matches going all the way to the 36th hole at Levin Golf Club’s Championship Finals Day. 2002 and solely by Manawatu Wanganui in 2000. The women’s team have one more match up against Taranaki in Wanganui before the Toro to be played this year in Ashburton. An 8 player mens team travelled to Taupo to compete in matches against Bay of Plenty at Wairakei and Kinloch. In a close result the strong Bay of Plenty line up won the match up 9 – 7. The first match at Wairakei went the way of the home side 5 – 3, while the match at the Kinloch Club was drawn 4 all. The team was led by NZ number 1, Josh Munn, who had returned after recent overseas events. He won both matches. While the greens at Kinloch were slow due to recent coring, and 3 temporary greens were being used, the long Jack Nicklaus layout is spectacular and quite different from any other course most players would experience. Thankfully the weather was perfect which makes the course much more playable. Wairakei was in excellent condition with very fast greens in contrast to Kinloch. 

O’Connor winning 3/2. Hung was sent into the play-off on the back of her momentum and just came up short. Although Canterbury Rep Kobori was an obvious star for Country, it was her teammates that all chipped in during the day and laid the platform for the title win.

RUSSLEY WIN WOODWARD CUP

CANTERBURY

COUNTRY WIN POLLOCK CUP THERE was an enthralling finish to the 2015 Pollock Cup when Momoka Kobori sunk a 10 foot birdie putt from the apron on the second play-off hole to win the Pollock Cup for the Country team. Her teammates Fiona Gebbie, Di Kay and Nicky Muir were in raptures as the putt went in and the realisation hit them that they had won. Young Russley hope Juliana Hung was inconsolable, but she had done her club proud in the play-off. She had a chance to win it on the first play-off hole – the par 5 18th, but her five foot birdie attempt slid by, while Kobori made a spectacular upand-down from 20 metres in front of the green for a half. In regular time Hororata’s Nick Muir had a fine win over Amy Weng 4/3, and Jas-

RUSSLEY again showed their class and ability to resist pressure when they overcame a gallant Harewood team in the final of the Woodward Cup at Weedons this afternoon. The win was set up on the back of the experience at the bottom of the order – Andrew Dufton and Garth Treacy. Although they both gave away early leads to Matt O’Carroll and Blair Batson, they came back strong to win down the stretch 1up and 3/1 respectively. No. 6 Henry Bryden then chimed in with a 4/2 win over Sam Watkinson. Josh Smith got a point back for Harewood with a 2/1 win over Dominic Brettkelly, but Anthony Weatherhead made it “all but” when he beat Blair Dibley 3/2. It was up to Michael McAuley to match Matt McLean’s birdie on the par 5 18th to get the needed half point and secure the win for Russley. The final two matches were on the nearby 17th tee when this happened and they chose to finish them there. For the record Owen Burgess beat Andrew Green 1up, and Reid Hilton beat Scott Manyweathers 2/1. The final result 6.5-1.5. This was the fourth win in a row for Russley. Harewood whilst disappointed with the loss will take a lot of heart from their performance providing a platform to work off in the coming years.
