Ko’s mountain took 13 years to climb L ittle more than a week before Lydia Ko won the Evian Championship in France, the New Zealand under-19 tournament was held in Wellington. It’s amazing to think that Ko, apart from the obvious factor of being a professional, would have been eligible for the under-19 amateur event because she was still only aged 18. Then just nine days later Ko wins the Evian, notches her first win in a golf major and becomes the youngest woman to do so. It got me thinking. Did the win in France demonstrate that she had metaphorically moved an ocean ahead of where she was when she left New Zealand to play professionally? Or is the gap between winning our national under-19 championship and winning a ma-
jor more like a stream than an ocean? Most would say the two are indeed an ocean —or oceans — apart. But I’m not so sure. Let’s say Lydia did play in the under-19 tournament. And let’s say she would have won. Can you imagine what Lydia would have been like afterwards? I would suggest it would have been no different to how she was after the Evian. She would have been her usual bubbly self and she would have answered questions from a publicity officer at the under-19s just like she did from world’s press after the Evian. So why do I think the difference between two events is not that great?
I suppose it’s like climbing a mountain, even though I haven’t attempted anything like such a feat. The last 100 metres or so to the peak is often not the hardest. All the hard work is done beforehand, which Ko has done. Ko started playing golf when she was aged five. It, I would suggest, has taken her 13 years to climb her Everest. So what now? When you climb a mountain you have to go back down and presumably get ready to climb more mountains. That takes preparation, commitment and more hard work. Ko is well used to that. Winning another major is not an ocean away. It’s just one of many streams.

Daniel Hillier’s second national title D ANIEL HILLIER racked up his second national title when he prevailed in a dramatic finish to the New Zealand Under-19 Championship at Shandon Golf Club in Wellington. Hillier, 17, finished the regulation 54 holes in a tie for first but took out the title on the first playoff hole. Hillier was opposed by Kevin Koong of Auckland in the playoff and knocked his tee shot on the par three 18th to within about six feet of the hole. Hillier rolled in the putt for a birdie to secure the win which was his second win at national level. The previous national title had been just five months earlier when won the New Zealand Amateur Championship at Titirangi Golf Club in Auckland. Hillier finished at five over par at Shandon with scores of 75, 67 and 73 but appalling weather conditions were hardly conducive to good scoring. “Conditions weren’t too flash
and the scores reflected that,’’ Hillier told Golfer Pacific. “I couldn’t get anything going on the first day but I found my zone on the second day and just battled it out on the last day.’’ Hillier complimented the effort of Koong, from the Huapai club in North Harbour, who had the best round on the final day with a two-under par 68. “He’s only 15 years old and he did really well to come from where he was at the beginning of the day.’’ Hillier said being from Wellington helped with his familiarity of the Shandon course but he remained proud to have his name etched alongside some other great names on the trophy. “Obviously playing here quite a bit over the years helped me a lot, so it’s great to be a Wellingtonian this week. “With Adam Scott and Jason Day on the trophy, hopefully one day I will be able to follow in their footsteps and if I
keep putting the hard work in, it’s going to be an exciting few years.”

Keh and Alvarez join forces in Washington By Paul Gueorgieff
W
hat’s the capital of Washington? That’s the question I posed to Wenyung Keh the day before she departed New Zealand for the United States. Keh has taken up a golf scholarship with Washington State University and it seemed appropriate to test her general knowledge on the place she was headed for. First of all, let me put you in the pictcure: Washington is in the top left-hand corner of the United States and the state was named after a guy named George who was the first president of the United States. The Washington state borders Canada to its north and it is a long, long way from Washington DC, the capital of the US, which is one the other side of the country. So what is the capital of Washington? I had put the same question to Julianne Alvarez who just two days earlier had also left New Zealand to attend the same university on a similar golf scholarship. Julianne didn’t know but she guessed Seattle. A good guess. Seattle is Washington’s largest city by a country mile. It’s has 60 percent of the state’s population and is a well-known city. But the capital of Washington it is not. Keh didn’t even bother making a guess. “I have no idea,’’ she said. But I wonder if most Americans would know the answer. When I looked it up I had never heard of the place. The answer is Olympia. Amazingly, it is just the 22nd largest city in Washington and it sounded more like a place in Greece than the United States of America. But enough of the educational lesson on US state capitals. The presence of Alvarez and Keh at Washington State University means we in New Zealand will suddenly be taking an interest in the performance of it’s golf team. Alvarez and Keh were New Zealand’s top two ranked amateur players and it will be
interesting to see how they measure up on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. Keh, from the Pakuranga Golf Club in Auckland, made a fitting farewell when she won the New Zealand Age Group Championship at Manor Park Golf Sanctuary in Wellington last month. She won the under-19s tournament by four shots from Alanna Campbell from Tauranga. Keh was a model of consistency with scores of 72, 73 and 72 to finish at one over par in very testing weather conditions. Keh said consistency was her main objective. “The weather conditions were very tough,’’ she recalled. “Playing in the wind and rain made it difficult for everyone and I just wanted to keep the game simple. “I kept thinking keeping it consistent and simple would lead to good scores.’’ The win made for a great 12 months for Keh. Earlier in the year she won the Akarana Open in Auckland by seven shots and the Lawnmaster Classic in Palmerston North by four shots. They are both Charles Tour events and on both occasions Alvarez was the runner-up. A few months earlier Keh was unbeaten for Auckland in the Interprovincials. It was the fourth year in succession that Auckland had taken out the Interprovincials and Keh was a member of the team on each occasion. Keh, 18, is a younger sister of the wellperformed Munchin Keh. Munchin is five years older and is considering becoming a professional golfer next year. There is a third sister. Her name is Siyi and she finished fifth in the under-19s tournament at Manor Park at the age of 16. Wenyung Keh admitted it was daunting to be heading to the United States to attend university and play golf but said the accompaniment of Alvarez made the decision to do so all the easier. “That was part of it,’’ she said. “It’s a good opportunity and a new experience but it’s good Julianne will be there.

We’ll be playing on the same team and it will be good to have someone like her there.’’ But on the eve of her departure the nerves were still there. “I have mixed emotions right now. It’s really quite nerve-wracking and I’m a bit out of my comfort zone but hopefully it all works out.’’

Mark Brown wins for the third time at Tauranga M
Mark Brown. PHOTO: BW MEDIA
ARK BROWN racked up his fourth win on New Zealand’s Charles Tour when he won the Carrus Open in Tauranga for a third time. Brown, a former Wellingtonian now based in Tauranga, had won he Carrus Open in 2012 and 2014 and he added his third when he prevailed by one shot at the Tauranga Golf Club last month. There was no lack of drama at the business end of the tournament. The weather offered wind and rain at random throughout the final day which made for a very challenging finish. As the final group played the 17th it turned into torrential rain and the greens flooded making the course impossible to play. This crazy burst of rain meant many hands on deck as water was swept off both greens by the bucket load to get play back on track once again. In anticipation of the afternoon weather bomb, the decision was made by New Zealand Golf’s Tournament director Dave Mangan to bring the tee times forward which meant only the 18th hole was the focus and was easy to handle as most of the course flooded. Once able to continue, Brown calmly closed it out in front of a large local
crowd. “Its amazing support here at the club from all the members so it’s great to do it in front of them and really exciting timing with the end of the year coming up as well,” Brown said. “The rain was probably a good thing for me, I took five minutes to chill out because I didn’t hit a very good shot into 17, it was pouring down and luckily after that I made the putt. “It was tough with a lot of wind starting out, so scoring was going to be different to other rounds. I didn’t get off to a particularly fast start which you want to do around here, it was just about hanging in and keeping the boys at bay. “This year was a bit different and I had to hit some pretty good shots in these conditions, I didn’t get a lot going today, but enough.” Brown had rounds of 67, 65, 66 and 68 on the par 70 course to post his third win in the tournament. His other win on Charles Tour came in the 2006 Taranaki Open. Just one shot behind Brown at Tauranga were fellow professional Jim Cusdin and top amateur Joshua Munn. Cusdin started the final round brilliantly when including a two on the par four second hole and after 10 holes he was sitting at four under for
THE US MASTERS GOLF TOUR via Pebble Beach 2nd – 11th April 2016
the day. Munn, from Manawatu, had rounds of 66, 63, 69 and 69 and was pleased he measured up to the likes of Brown and Cusdin. “It’s just awesome, these guys have been competing for years,’’ Munn said. “Browny has been on tour for 10-15 years, so it gives you confidence going forward in what you’re doing and all your beliefs. I love these events, I’ve always loved them since a young age.” Meanwhile it was another local, Alanna Campbell, who won the women’s division of the Carrus Open. Campbell’s win was her second in a row on the Charles Tour. The Carrus Open was the opening event of the tour this season and Campbell had won the final event of last season’s tour, the Muriwai Open in May. “It feels great I guess, it hasn’t really sunk in yet,’’ Campbell said. “I got my way around and did what I needed to do. It was pretty cool, dad came out and brother Shaun who is in the men’s grade and played well this weekend, but having mum on the bag is pretty awesome as well.”

onathan Cane racked up his fourth win for the year when taking out the Wellington Strokeplay Championship. Cane had won the Shandon and Miramar Opens in the two months before the Wellington Strokeplay while earlier in the year he had taken out the Wairarapa Open. Cane, who played at No 1 for the Wellington interprovincial team last year, said his recent run of success was not down to anything brilliant. “No disrespect to the opposition but I don’t think I was at the top of my game for any of the wins,’’ Cane told Golfer Pacific. “I was just able to keep the massive scores off my scorecard and when I got into trouble I didn’t do anything stupid. I was getting good results without doing anything spectacular.’’ In the Wellington Strokeplay, played at the Te Marua Golf Club in Upper Hutt last month, the weather conditions were poor which was reflected in the scoring. Cane, who has shifted to the Royal Wellington club from Manor Park, had rounds of 70, 72, 70 and 72 for the par 71 course which was enough for him to prevail by one stroke. Second was Kerry Mountcastle from Masterton and one shot back third was Ben Slaven from Royal Wellington. Meanwhile in the women’s division of the Wellington Strokeplay victory went to Manor Park player Gabrielle Palado. The 17-year-old scored by amazing 14 strokes with scores of 76, 77, 80 and 77 for the par 73 course at Te Marua. She went into the final round with a lead of 10 and said she had no intention of simply protecting her lead. “I just wanted to go out and have fun,’’ Gabrielle said.

“The weather was tough enough as it was.’’ The win was Palado’s second important victory in seven weeks. She, like Cane, had also won the Shandon Open on August 1, again in comprehensive fashion by five strokes. Palado was pleased with a couple of aspects of her game at Te Marua. “My short game on the first day was very good and my long game on the second day was very strong.’’ Paledo takes over as the No 1 player at Manor Park following the departure of Julianne Alvarez to the United States.

Club golfer not forgotten in Jennian sponsorship
N
ew Zealand golfers can receive a new set of golf clubs and have their club membership paid for in a deal with a new sponsor to New Zealand’s Charles Tour. Jennian Homes was last month announced as the naming rights sponsor to the Charles Tour and the club golfer was not forgotten in the deal. Jennian said any New Zealand Golf member who builds a new home with Jennian would receive a new set of Cobra clubs, have their club’s annual membership paid for and enable a $1000 donation back to the New Zealand Junior Golf Foundation. Dave Wilson, business development manager for Jennian Homes, said: “This is the first sports sponsorship Jennian Homes has ever undertaken from a national perspective. Aligning ourselves with golf, a great kiwi pastime, fits perfectly with the iconic New Zealand owned Jennian brand that’s been around for 33 years, and supporting the Charles Tour definitely extends our ‘building for the future’ philosophy – not only in houses but now in emerging golfers as well.” New Zealand Golf commercial manager Nick Rowland said: “It was im-
Lydia Ko fact file following her first win in a major
perative for us to not just find a partner for the Charles Tour, but to find the right fit. Jennian Homes reflects the same values of New Zealand Golf, where longevity and quality take precedence, and we are proud to be working in partnership with them.” Jennian Homes has also added a new aspect to the Charles Tour, The Jennian Homes Trophy. This is to be of similar mould to the FedEx Cup on the US PGA Tour and rewards players for being consistent over the full season as well as competing in more events. The first two tournaments of the Jennian Homes Charles Tour schedule for 2015-16 were:The Carrus Open, Tauranga Golf Club September 17. The Taranaki Open, Augusta Funds Management New Plymouth Golf Club October 1. The remaining events are:John Jones Steel Open, Harewood Golf Club October 22. Lawnmaster Classic, Manawatu Golf Club, March 17. Barfoot and Thompson Akarana Open, Akarana Golf Club April 14. Autex Muriwai Men’s Open, Muriwai Golf Club April 28.
LYDIA KO became the youngest woman to win a major when she unleashed a blistering finish of six birdies in her last eight holes to win the Evian Championship in France last month. Ko was aged 18 years, four months and 20 days at the time of the win which was six months younger than the previous record held by Morgan Pressel of the United States. Pressel was aged 18 years, 10 months and nine days when she won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in California in 2007.

Thanks to Lydia, Sir Bob and Cambo W
HAT a privilege it was to watch a truly historic occasion of Lydia Ko’s last month. Lydia triumphed at the Evian Championship in France to become the youngest woman to win a major championship and only the third New Zealander to win a major, following Sir Bob Charles (1963 Open Championship) and Michael Campbell (2005 US Open). Given Lydia has long been expected to win a major, it is easy to not place enough focus on just what a very special and momentous occasion this was. For New Zealand as a sporting nation, major golf championship victories provide some of the most memorable occasions in our history. The names of Sir Bob Charles and Michael Campbell are synonymous with the very pinnacle of New Zealand sporting success. They are athletes whose success has inspired generations of New Zealanders from all walks of life. When Michael Campbell won the US Open, in 2005, the nation virtually came to a halt. Then, when a street parade was held in Wellington, parliament was suspended, the streets of Wellington were closed and Campbell’s plane was shown live to the nation as it landed at Wellington airport. Major championships are without question the pinnacle of world golf. They are the epitome of elite sporting success commanding public interest and global media attention that few other sporting events can rival. How lucky we are to have Lydia add her name to this incredibly exclusive honour roll. Well done Lydia, you are truly
an inspiration. While Lydia was creating history in France, her New Zealand major winning companions were still shining a bright light on the game; albeit with less media attention. Sir Bob Charles spent the week in Tauranga at the Carrus Open where he warmly charmed players, sponsors and guests at the event. While he comfortably golfed his ball around the Tauranga layout for a score under his age in the pro-am tournament, what is more impressive is the generosity he continues to show. While Sir Bob has given back to the game in a substantial manner over many decades, most recently he has been kind enough to lend his name to the Charles Tour event series. Now named the Jennian Homes Charles Tour, Sir Bob was on hand to launch the new season of the tour and did so in fine fashion. Thank you, Sir Bob. At about the same Michael Campbell was also doing his bit to give back to the game. Three young New Zealander amateur golfers spent the week with Cambo at his home base in Spain to gain an insight into what it takes to become a successful professional golfer. Cambo generously hosts three young amateur golfers each year, offering a once in a lifetime experience where they get to play, learn and socialise with one of the game’s greats. What a wonderful experience for the golfers but

also what a wonderful gesture from Cambo to give back to the game. Thank you, Michael for your ongoing support. Back to Lydia. With the major monkey off her back, her future seems to have endless possibilities. One thing we can be sure on is that Lydia will also continue to give back to the game following the example of Sir Bob and Cambo. For example her Lydia Ko scholarship programme is already established and I’m sure, given her fine character, we will see her continue to be an outstanding ambassador for our sport for years to come. Well done Lydia, you are a true superstar.

Smile and play better golf O
N Saturday, I played my first round of golf in more than three months. Like many, I am not a big fan of winter golf but also I was playing poorly and I wasn’t that interested in playing. The more I played, the worse I played. Not a fun place to be. Who enjoys playing golf when they are playing poorly? At times like that, I am more inclined to go and do something else. I took a lesson from a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago and only got to the practice range once before heading out to play 18 holes. Let’s just say that the first hole wasn’t very pleasant but it got a little better after that. So much so, that I am now looking forward to playing next week! Being aged near 50 and out of shape, I was a little tired and had more than a few sore muscles! I made sure that I went to the gym a couple of days later and stretched out my body. I quickly realised that my golf muscles hadn’t been used for so long that stretching my golf muscles was more important than hitting lots and lots of golf balls. In talking to Susan Farron, former New Zealand representative player, tour pro and one of the best coaches in the country, she said that she came across this common problem with all age groups on a daily basis in golf. Someone takes a lesson to work on their game then does no practice in between and then heads back for the next
lesson. I am pretty sure that is not the best way to improve your game. Susan started telling me about how there was a more holistic approach to the game. According to Susan, golf is a sport that people take up for many different and varied reasons. “The greatest part of my job is finding out what people want and why they want to commit and dedicate the time to learn golf or improve on their current games,’’ she said. “Asking the right questions helps to know what the golfer is prepared to do to get better.” Sometimes golfers really just want some fun, a walk in the sun, some fresh air and a bit of laughter and friendship. If this is the case, I always advise strengthening your glutes (buttocks muscles) and legs to get used to walking the 5-7km required for 18 holes of golf. Some golfers are looking to challenge themselves and pursue a single figure handicap. While others want to join in with their partners for summer golf and gain confidence to get out and just play without the embarrassment of holding up others. Wherever you are on the learning spectrum, your golfing muscles must adapt to a sport that puts massive stress on many joints and parts of the body. A quality short practice once a day is far more beneficial than only working on your game once a fortnight,
when trying to cram everything in. The biggest problem facing golfers is that the sport they love and want to excel at requires great posture, good balance, stability, flexibility and rotational movements in an unhurried flowing movement. Your daily activities have a massive impact on how your golf swing will function. This is mainly because our postures are affected by everything we do from sitting, eating, driving and sleeping. Poor posture can affect our golf swing hugely. Also our head space can also create stress on our joints, as our emotions are often the cause or linked to your current physical performance. If there is stress in your life, it pretty much shows in your golf game resulting in fast, frustrated, hurried, rushed or forced movements with your head low and shoulders slumped. A very easy approach to fix posture is to smile and walk-tall with your shoulders back. It sounds like a simple solution but it is more difficult than you think. Have you ever practiced smiling? How easy is that to improve your golf game and your posture? As I want to spend more time playing better golf this summer, I will be taking a few more lessons. I also will be taking Susan’s advice and plan to stand up straight and smile more.

The youngest major winner L
YDIA KO’S stunning result at Royal Evian makes her the youngest major championship winner of the modern era, but not quite the youngest of all time. That honour belongs to Tom Morris junior, who won the 1868 Open Championship at Prestwick, at the age of 17 years and 156 days. Some will argue that Lydia’s win takes precedence, being over four rounds against a full field of the best female golfers in the world. By contrast, Tom Morris’s victory in 1868 was over 36 holes, against only 11 other players, so can that be counted as a true major championship title? The history books say yes; the reality is that comparisons across such a period of time are probably pointless, other than to agree that they are both champions who comprehensively beat the opposition they faced. Tom Morris junior (also known as “young Tom”, or “Tommy” – as opposed to his father “old Tom”) won the princely sum of £8 in 1868, and a silver buckled belt. He had to leave a good deal of his prizemoney behind as surety for taking the belt away, a problem he solved over the next two years by winning the Open a second and third time, which entitled him to keep the belt in perpetuity under the rules. Clearly none of the early Open Championship organisers had thought of this possibility: there was no tournament in 1871, because there was no trophy to play for. By
then Tommy was regarded as unbeatable anyway: he had won the 1869 Open by 11 shots, including the first hole in one in the nine years of the Open to that point. That year he also set a course record of 77 at St Andrews, which stood for 20 years. In 1870, he started the championship with an extraordinary achievement. The first hole at Prestwick measured over 530 metres, and although “par” had not been invented at that time, most of the professionals took at least four shots to reach the green, so six would have been the equivalent to par as we know it today. After two perfect shots, Tommy proceeded to hole his third from around 180 metres to record championship golf’s first albatross. He went on to win by 12 shots with a two round total of 149, a score never beaten while the Open was played over 36 holes. When the Open resumed in 1872, the competitors played for a medal, with Tommy winning for the fourth time in a row, a feat no one has since matched. That was to be his last Open, and sadly young Tom never got to lift the Claret Jug, first played for in 1873, because he died suddenly the following year at the age of 24, a few months after his wife and child had died during childbirth.
Kevin Cook’s fascinating book on the Morris family, “Tommy’s Honour”, is now about to be made into a film directed by Sir Sean Connery’s son Jason. There is a New Zealand connection as well, with Sam Neill playing the part of Alexander Boothby, who was the Royal & Ancient captain during the Morris era. The film is due for release some time next year, and it will be intriguing to see how they deal with Tommy’s story and the golf content in particular. Despite the derisory purses on offer in the early Opens, young Tom made an excellent living from high-stake singles and foursomes matches, which were typically played over eight(!) rounds, or 144 holes for stakes of up to £200 at a time. In a sense he was the first touring professional who made a living solely from playing golf, setting the scene for the modern era of golf as we now know it. What he would have thought of the money on offer today is anybody’s guess, but he would have seen some parallels between his career and Lydia Ko’s: the ability to beat professionals twice or three times their age in all weather conditions, and to lift the game of golf to another level, with huge galleries following their every move.

Anthony Barkley is Golfer Pacific’s Golf professional contributor. He is head professional at Rotorua Golf Club. “Ant” is responsible for many aspects of play at the club. One of the main things that he sees his role is to help people enjoy their golf more. Over the coming month’s he will write these articles with this intention of writing about club fitting, coaching, the mental game and will include the occasional review of new products.
Women Golfer’s can benefit from club fitting too! I read recently about custom sets of clubs. In the world it’s estimated that only 20% of all fittings are with women golfers. Initially I thought this must be wrong but as I look through my own club fittings I see it’s indeed out of proportion to men’s sets. The question is why? Answers have been varied from women not seeing fitting being important to husbands not wanting to spend too much on their wives clubs (that can’t be right). But the truth is that women need fitted clubs just as much as men and if fitted right, they will help their game. Vary rarely will I do a fitting and someone comes out with standard lie, length and grip size. There should be no “they are almost right for you” or “they should be ok” as I heard one lady recently talk-
ing about what a salesperson had said to her which made me shake my head. So what should a women look for in a set of clubs? Some of the most popular clubs for ladies are now very light weight which are great if your swing suits lightweight clubs. That’s right, a very light weight club doesn’t suit all as it depends on you swing tempo and strength. The only way to 100% tell is to get fitted by a PGA professional who has this knowledge. A FlightSCope or Trackman will also punch out some important numbers for a fitter to look at to establish correct shaft characteristics. There is also one thing to understand in the golf market as well. You don’t have to splash out huge amounts of money for lightweight product as there are price point products like the Wilson
D-200 range that are as good as some high end brands that claim they are the best as they are the most expensive. There is some excellent product on the market these days but gone are the days where there is one stand out brand, so keep your options open as at the end of the day you are looking to improve you golf, and if someone tries to sell you something off the rack in a shop, be careful, as they may not suit you at all. If you are looking, here are three recommendations: • Callaways NEW Heaven wood • Wilsons D-200 range of ladies clubs-superlight and good quality • Invest in Hybrids from 7 iron up if looking for game improvement. Happy golfing and talk again soon.

NORTHLAND
NEHO DOMINANT AT BOI STROKEPLAY KADIN NEHO (Whangarei) produced a classy performance in claiming his first Bay of Islands Strokeplay Championship title at Waitangi Golf Club recently. The annual 36-hole event again drew a quality field featuring many of Northlands leading junior, senior and master’s representatives including two time winner and Northland’s form golfer of late Luke Brown (The Pines). The competitions morning round saw Neho post the low round of the tournament, a relatively stress free two under par 70 that featured three birdies at the second, eighth and thirteenth holes with a solitary bogey at the par five third. Four players stood within four strokes of Neho’s lead heading into the final round, the closest being Alex Neely (Kerikeri) just one back on 71 followed by Brown, Lee Neumann (Northland) and Scott Wilson (Waitangi) all 74. Wilson faded in the second round eventually finishing with an 80 to finish tied 10th alongside Northland master’s teammate Peter Bone (Whangarei). A round of 78 from Neely saw him fall back to a tie for third alongside Brown (75) and promising 16-year-old Julian Fowler (Northland) who rebounded from an opening 77

to close with an even par round of 72. Neumann completed a second consecutive round of 74 to take second place on his own but could not reel in Neho who closed with 72 in the final round to claim a comfortable six stroke win. TAYLOR GILL made a valiant effort to defend his NZ Under 19 Men’s Stroke Play Championship Title which he won last year. This year’s event was held at Shandon Golf Club in Wellington in the most atrocious weather conditions. Only two players in the Men’s and Women’s fields finished the tournament under par. Taylor made a great start leading the first round with an even par 70 and was heading for another in the second round until he had a triple bogey on his last hole to finish with 73. The last day undid a lot of the players and Taylor battled the conditions to finish with a round of 78 and in sole 12th place. A fantastic result in such an elite field.

GOLF TRAILS 143 golfers teed off in a shot gun start format on beautiful warm late winter’s day. The “Yellow Ball” combined stableford competition is well contested. The team prize being a round of golf for four and accommodation at the Carrington Golf Club. The rules for the day were as follows. The yellow ball must be returned to remain in the competition. A team had the option to “purchase” a spare yellow ball by way of a $40.00 donation to the Cancer Society and/or nominate a hole where the team can double its yellow ball stableford points (again for a $40.00 donation.)

No reason to go hungry or thirsty around the course. The Hikurangi Lions Club provided food and refreshments and Karen the club caterer provided “cheese and port” beside the 18th green. By the time everyone is back at the clubhouse “wallet’s” had been loosened and continued to be emptied with raffles and auctions. Everyone went away with a prize from the loaded prize table. Moira Pullman had first pick winning the day with 44 stablefords. The president and committee offered a big thankyou to all those involved in organising, the generous sponsors and golfers alike. All entered into the spirit of the day. Was it worth it? The numbers say it was. $17,086 raised for the Cancer Society for this year’s event, $158,000 total for 11 tournaments. Golfer Pacific says well done Hikurangi Golf Club.

She is also the leader of her school’s kapa haka roopu and was the overall winner of the Marsden Lions Club’s Young Ambassadors Award. She loves kapa haka and if she can’t find anywhere to do it in San Diego she will start a group herself. She said kapa haka would be one of many things she would miss. Miss Ngakuru-Smith needed to pass NCEA level 3 with Merit this year to officially gain the scholarship but she was only 12 credits off.

MENS SENIORS AND MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP THE tournament was held from August 28th to 30th at Huapai, Helensville and Huapai golf club. The event sponsored by both TaylorMade / Adidas Golf and Constellation Brands had a near capacity field of 90 players and is always a major highlight on the tournament calendar. Unfortunately for the first time in the tournaments 8 year history the final round at Muriwai was abandoned without a tee shot being hit when the course was completely flooded out during torrential rain fall in the morning. With pressure to get the field off at a certain time due to member tee times in the afternoon it was a tough call and an unfortunate end to the tournament. However the results and prize giving were able to be conducted using the first two rounds. In the 40-49 division Rob Simmonds (Muriwai) on 143 won the ti-

GOLF TRAILS and we look forward to another great tournament in 2016.
VOLUNTEERS EVENING AS those involved in the administration of the game know, without the tireless work of volunteers, many of the services to the game the association is responsible for would not be possible. Often these people work tirelessly in the back ground with little acknowledgement as they simply want to serve the game they love. On the 10th of September the association held at volunteers evening at Pupuke Golf Club for the 35 odd volunteers that assist us with the administration of the game in the area. Drinks and food were put on for these people and it is the least the association can do to thank them. It has now become an annual event (first held in 2014) and will continue into the future. Presentations were made on the evening to both Margaret Robinson (Women’s Pennant Convenor) and Judy James (Course Rating Convenor) who are both standing down from their positions at the end of the year after very long terms of service. Once again thank you to all those that attended the evening and help foster the game in our North Harbour district.
Kevin Koong – 2nd place overall on 215 (Lost in playoff) but won the U17 section by 2 shots. Awesome last round of 68. Jake Meenhorst – T3rd place overall on 217. Leader by 2 shots going into final round but did not play his best on last day. Still a great tournament though and great experience for one of the districts best golfers. Jimmy Hydes – T7th in overall on 220 and 3rd in... the U17s. Great last round of 71 to move up the leader board. Jake Lee – Tied for 15th on 223 and won the U15 category by 2 shots. Rocky Pryce-Jones – 2nd in Under 13 category Bohyun Park – 4th overall on 223 and won Under 13 category by 21 shots! Krystal Hu – 9th overall on 230 and T3 un Under 17s. Ela Grimwood – 12th overall on 235 and 6th in Under 17s. Congrats to all the players that competed in Wellington. Some players really hitting their strides before the upcoming Junior Interprovincial events for both the boys and girls. Go Harbour!

was changed to 18 holes and almost 50 young junior boys and girls competed in the tournament. The big winners were Jake Meenhorst (Huapai - pictured above) who shot a fantastic round of 67 and Subin Wui (Pupuke) who won the girls division with a 76.
NORTH HARBOUR MEN AND WOMEN DEFEAT BAY OF PLENTY IT was a long time coming but North Harbour have defeated Bay of Plenty in the annual Bay Harbour matches at Springfield Golf Club today. After dominating the first day in all three of the men’s categories it was a little different on the second day with the BOP juniors storming back to win the Under 19’s 2.5-1.5 and the Under 16’s 3-1. However the senior men would once again win by the same score line as Saturday (5-3) to mean North Harbour have won the Bay Harbour challenge by 18-14 to claim the title they had not last won since 2009. Well done guys! The senior women were also playing against the Bay at the same venue and it was smooth sailing as they won both days 6.5-1.5 to win 13-3. Overall a great weekend for both the guys and girls! Well done all.

SUE ON FIRE AT THE GRANGE SUE KNOX, the current Ladies Vice Captain, who joined the Grange in 2001, has had an amazing week of golf. What are the odds – two holes in one in the same week, on the same hole with the same club? On Tuesday 25th August Sue had an ace on the par 3, 4th hole which was playing 103 m in heavy wet conditions with an 8 iron. On Thursday 27th August another hole in one on the 4th playing 115m in slightly better conditions with the same club. This was the first time Sue has had a hole in one. Champagne has flowed and Sue who has been working hard on her game with coach Jacques Nortje has been very modest about this amazing feat. Well done Sue!

It is an amazing annual tournament which over the past 24 years has raised more than $250,000 for Hospice. We are incredibly grateful for their support, and in order to help them make the event a success we need to supply 160 Goodie Bags for the event. Totara Hospice South Auckland has to raise $3.8 million every year to provide free services to individuals and families in the South Auckland area suffering from Terminal Illness. Hospice is highly reputed and at one point or another, most individuals will have contact with Hospice directly or in-directly. NOVEMBER 3RD MELBOURNE CUP DAY (Entries open now..fills up very fast!)
The Lunden links event is a Team Event in which the best 3 of 4 nett scores count each day. It was the local team who made the best start to the event on Day 1 with 3 of their 4 players playing under their handicap. Te Awamutu’s Herewini Hohepa led the team with a (68) meanwhile, team mate Olivewr Vincent came in with the same score. The third counting score was from Adam Scott who had a 6under par nett score of 64. Jacob Kingi’s nett score of 71 was the noncounting score. Te Awamutu would finish day 1 with a score of 200. Matamata College was next best; the counting scores from Jack Trower (70), Cameron Rumney (69) and Robson Tarrant (68) would give Matamata a round 1 total of 207, trailing by 7 shots. A further shot back was the number 2 team from Hamilton Boys High School. Counting scores from Leo Ko (66), Keenan Membury (72), and Matt Davis (70) would see the boys 8 behind Te Awamutu and 1 behind Matamata on 208. On Day Two, it wasn’t looking good for a start as miserable weather hit the Hamilton City, which delayed the start of play for 2hours. However, the players were keen to start and managed to get out on course around 12noon, a few showers was all that was in the way over the days play. Round One leader’s Te Awamutu were down to three men as team member Jacob Kingi couldn’t make the second day’s play. This meant all scores had to count for the team and consistency was the key. The boy’s seemed to do their bit however with Herewini Hohepa posting a score of 74, Oliver Vincent with 73 and Adam Scott with another impressive score of 67. The 213 day total would take the boys to a 2 day total of 413. The Matamata team could only get 1 shot closer as Jack Trower led the way with an impressive 66 nett, Nicohlas Allen (73) and Cameron Rumney (73) would give them a day total of 212. The team from the deep south Pio Pio College made a slight mark on the competition with a second day total of 211. Oliver Barnsdall (70), Cody Mortensen (74) and
Jack Mortensen (67) would be the counting scores. On Day three at the Te Aroha Golf Club, it was everyone chasing Te Awamutu College. They had a 6 shot lead going into the final round, and once again found themselves with 3 men. This time Herewini Hohepa was unavailable as he would be attending the Basketball competition in Rotorua. Could Matamata and Pio Pio College be in with a chance to upset the leaders’? It looked promising for Pio Pio College as Jack Mortensen signed his card for an incredible 10under par 60nett. Combined with Oliver Barnsdall (68) and his brother Heath Barnsdall (72), the team total of 200 would give them a competition total of 624. Matamata fought hard but came up short as Nicholas Allen (72), Robson Tarrant (67) and Jack Trower (71) would combined for a day total of 210 and a competition total of 629, a mere 5 shots shy of Pio Pio College. But there was no catching the trio from Te Awamutu. Jacob Kingi signed his card for a score of 69 Oliver Vincent 73 and Adam Scott with another good score of 67. The day total of 209 and the competition total of 622 would be a 2 shot victory for the team from Te Awamutu College. 20 years since the school last won the event, Te Awamutu players were more than pleased to take the trophy back to the Waipa. Special mention to Jack Mortensen from Pio Pio College who was the Best Individual in this year’s event. Scores of 67, 67, & 60 for a total of 194 was 4 shots clear of Te Awamutu’s Adam Scott who posted scores of 64, 67 & 67.

GOLF AT WHANGAMATA WHANGAMATA is one of New Zealand’s premier beach towns where one can surf, fish, walk, cycle, hunt and play golf at either of the two distinctly different golf courses. The 18 Hole Titoki course is situated about 1km south of the township. When you line up your drive on No. 1 the enjoyment starts. In front of you are three elevated tees, two elevated greens, 10 dogleg fairways and the Wentworth River to contend with on 13 of the 18 holes, so it pays to know the water hazard rules. It is for the most part flat and set in a very picturesque valley. The 9 Hole Williamson course is situated right in the middle of town, nestled amongst mature pine and native trees and has three par fours and six par threes. It is a very good course for a youngster or learner golfer to start playing the game. It also is no push over for the experienced golfer who may want to sharpen up their irons play. It is a flat course

GOLF TRAILS shot a bogey free 67 in his second round. Inglewood’s Kerry Otene made it three wins from three in the Crowded House Taranaki Tour series, when he won the Egmont Championships at Stratford recently. Otene bounced back from a four-over par 76 in the morning round to shoot a two-under par 70 in the afternoon. His gross score of 146 was enough to finish four shots ahead of New Plymouth’s Daniel Lundt (76-74-150), with Hawera’s Tim White (7774-151) a shot further back in third spot.
HAWKE’S BAY/POVERTY BAY
FAMILY FUN AT OPEN DAY WITH summer on the way, it’s time to get out & about in Hawke’s Bay! Looking for something different to do? Mark 11 October on the calendar – and take the family for a brilliant day out at Hastings Golf Club’s OPEN DAY, from 10am – 2pm. “Everyone is welcome,” says Administration Manager Michelle Campbell. “There will be lots happening – perfect for families, and also anyone thinking about trying golf.” Highlight of the event is the opportunity to win a $20,000 Suzuki Swift, in the HoleIn-One Competition, on the 4th hole. Everyone is encouraged to have a go. “Come and try – you never know your luck on the day!” says Michelle. “Those who ‘make the cut’ in the Preliminary round will get in to the Final at 1.15pm. We’d like to thank Bayswater Vehicles for supporting this competition,” says Michelle. Entry on the day is free. Plus, there will be loads of free things happening on the day – have a go in the covered driving range or enjoy the complimentary sausage sizzle, thanks to Grande Gourmet (limited supplies). “There will be lots going on to entertain the younger ones, including a couple of bouncy castles. The talented Fairy Rosebud will be here, doing amazing face painting for the kids (and the older people too, if you like!). Children are also invited to have a go on our colourful, fun, soft golf gear that is ideal for kids learning
the sport. Plus, some greenkeeping tractors will be on display for those who love big machines!” Organisers say there will be a huge amount of amazing spot prizes up for grabs too, including 10 Toshiba bluetooth wireless speakers valued at $120 each, Trinity Hill wine, NZ Golf clothing, amongst many others. “Martin and Sarah from The HITS will be here too – making it a fun day for everyone.” Make sure you call in to the SpecialteeGolf Pro Shop, for some superb oneoff specials. Head Pro Brett Allan, and his team will be available to look after all your golfing needs. With all this fun activity, you might feel a bit peckish. Bunkers Cafe, located upstairs in the Clubhouse, will be open to everyone, with affordable delicious food and drink. Plus small meals suitable for young tummies. Thinking about trying golf? “The Open Day will be an ideal opportunity to find out more,” says Michelle. “Our friendly members and staff will be onhand to answer any questions you may have about the club or the sport of golf.” Hastings Golf Club is well regarded as one of the top 10 club courses in New Zealand. With a strong Beginner Programme, supportive buddy system and welcome club atmosphere, Hastings Golf Club should be at the top of your list when considering taking up golf. “Don’t miss out on our Open Day special – a 3 month membership, at a special discounted price of $299. Perfect for a new summer sport!” Come and see why Hastings Golf Club is the best club in Hawke’s Bay! “The team look forward to seeing you here in Bridge Pa,” says Michelle. MAIDEN VICTORY FOR DUFF BY ANENDRA SINGH/HAWKES BAY TODAY
IT was never a case of if amateur golfer Stuart Duff was going to do it but simply when.
PLAY GOLF AT ARIKIKAPAKAPA
That elusive maiden annual 72-stroke Kapi Tareha Memorial Tournament title came on the last day of last month at Napier Golf Club. “I’d been trying for a while. I’ve played in most of the [Kapi Tareha] tournaments in the last 20 years,” says Duff after carding 67, 76, 67, 70 to finish eight under. “I’d been close [to winning it] before, finishing second, thirds and fourths, so it was nice to win it because it’s a good tournament.” In keeping with the ideology of pedigree players, suffice it to say the 52-year-old had played often enough to know that his name would be engraved on the honours board of the sought-after Hawke’s Bay tourney. The plus-three handicapper from Hastings Golf Club was a stroke behind Lachie McDonald, of Palmerston North, after two rounds on day one. The break came in the third round the following morning on Sunday when McDonald blew out to 75. Russell Mitchell, of Maraenui Golf Club, “wasn’t far behind” but buckled under final-day pressure. “Let’s just say I didn’t have to stress out too much in the last round,” says Duff, a former Bay senior men’s representative who thanked his coach, PGA professional Brian Doyle, of Hastings. “Brian has been telling me something for 23 years and I’ve been trying to put them into place. “He’s fantastic. I’m seeing him every [few weeks] so he’s a great coach not just on the physical side of things like swing but the mental side as well.” McDonald was runner-up, eight strokes adrift. The stableford crown went to Richard Yovich on 146 points with Noel Stubbs two points behind in second place. McDonald, says Duff, is a very good player and the contingent from Palmerston North added to a quality field. But he feels the Bay lacks depth, juxtaposing it with the talent such as Doug Holloway, Pieter Zwart and Darryn Turley. Duff opted to fly below the radar several years ago at the height of his prowess amid Golf Hawke’s Bay’s efforts to inject

young blood in the ranks to boost the region’s stocks for the premier amateur team tourney, the Toro Interprovincial. No doubt Duff will not be part of the equation to the men’s interprovincials to be staged in Invercargill from December 1-5 this year because he has made himself unavailable since the controversy. While countless secondary schoolboys have sung Duff’s praises as a cricket coach in his capacity as Lindisfarne College teacher, the former Central Districts Stag batsman doesn’t see that filtering into golf even as a playing captain of the Bay rep side.

“When you’re out there [interprovincials] we are playing our own game so you don’t spend as much time with the boys so it’s quite different from cricket.” Either way, it seems the young will be poorer for not having Duff to bounce ideas off or simply watching a bloke with a placid demeanour tame the tricky fairways and greens around the country. Doyle likens Duff to “good old red wine that gets better with age”. “I have no doubt that Stu, even though he’s unavailable, is the best amateur player in Hawke’s Bay. He’s a cut above the next rank of amateur players,” says the former New Zealand high-performance coach. Doyle says during his Bay senior representative days Duff was content with a par round but these days emulating that is a run-of-the-mill feat for the amateur. “He just plays from the heart and is a sponge to everything I say. He has a professional air about him and youngsters I’ve spoken to and who know of Stu’s prowess, I have urged them to pick his brains,” says Doyle who believes Duff is a much better player now than when he was an interprovincial representative. “He’s got more strings to his bow and his confidence has grown. He also has excellent flexibility for his age. “I do mental stuff with him. Actually we were just doing it today,” he says, alluding to material he has gleaned from sport psychologists during his coaching stint at the national academy.

NEWS AND VIEWS FROM LEVIN GOLF CLUB LEVIN Golf Club’s The Super Loft cup which, was played last month, consisted of a team of three and must include one women, in this combined Stableford event. The event was won with massive points of 118 by Rod and Audrey Harrison with Club Captain Ray Grout (pictured left). The Horowhenua Open men’s and women’s 36 hole foursomes played last month saw a small field participate on a wet and windy day. Lowest gross score was won by Adrian Burns and Cruise Simpson. Best net Bob Eadie and Peter Johnson. Women 36 hole gross Karina Mac Donald and Tania Pouwhare.
Pictured are Peter Bull, Bob Eadie, Peter Johnson, Ray Seng, Karina MacDonald, Tania Pouwhare, Adrian Burns, Kim Bal-

This is open to all handicapped ladies and this year’s theme is black and white. The girls really have a ball at this tournament and entries are coming in quickly. The Sponsored Men’s Classic returns to its’ normal spot, 5-6 December. 18 holes each day. The field is divided into groups of thirty for the benefit of the prize table. Club President Allan Kearns was quoted as saying “ 29 to worry about to get into the prize list on stableford. The game of golf we do recognize those who can beat us all off the stick.”
MCDONALD FINALLY GETS SCHOLARSHIP TRIP MANAWATU Wanganui golfer Lachie McDonald sets off on Saturday to Spain as one of 3 players awarded a Michael Campbell Scholarship a couple of years ago. While the scholarship has taken sometime to become reality, it now comes at a great time for McDonald as he plans his next step in the game. McDonald will use the opportunity to gain as much valuable advice as he can from the former US Open Champion, so he can plan his next move in the game. McDonald has plans to give the professional game a crack, but is seeking advice to which pathway to take, as there are many options available, with some providing greater opportunities than others. Playing golf on second tier tours is not easy, as the

GOLF TRAILS money available compared with expenses makes it very tough to make a living. A big tour is where a golfer needs to get to, and this sometimes requires a big break to get on to. Recently NZ golfer Ryan Fox, just by chance took an opportunity on the European Challenge Tour, and by playing well over a six week stretch has now likely secured a spot on the full European Tour for the next season. Fox narrowly missed out on playing the Web.com tour this year after the grueling qualifying stages. So for McDonald he will be listening very closely to what Cambo has to tell him. Once McDonald returns to NZ he will have a full schedule of NZ Amateur events to compete in, including, the Charles Tour in New Plymouth and Christchurch, the North Island Amateur, and a number of district rep tournaments before the Toro Interprovincial. Following the Toro, McDonald will be looking at qualification for the Australasian Tour. At this stage McDonald has no plans past the Australasian qualifying, and will re-evaluate his goals depending on if he is successful.

WORK AT CARTERTON WORK continues on improvements at the Carterton Golf Club carried out by our crew of willing volunteers. The trees planted at the dogleg on the 7th fairway are coming along, although it will probably be another couple of seasons before they provide a real hazard. In the interim the area is designated G.U.R with play from a compulsory ‘drop zone’.
Some trees growing up whilst others are being chopped down. The long line of trees along the left side of the par five fifth have finally had their day. Planted too close together some years ago, they had grown very tall and skinny. No use for the mill, and causing that side of the fairway to be lacking any growth. The upside, lots and lots firewood, and more views of the glorious mountains.
NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS FINAL AT MANOR PARK A BIG thank-you to the volunteers and to those of you who provided your trundler for the week. Your support was much appreciated by the competitors and the organising committee. The title was won by St Peter’s College, Hamilton with a team gross of 425 over Aquinas College 436. The individual Gross was won by Alana Campbell (a good name to have to play at Manor Park) with a 70 & 67.

REPRESENTATIVE SEASON GETS UNDERWAY THE annual Town versus Country fixture was held recently at Greendale Golf Club, the event had to be reduced to 18 holes due to surface water, a special mention must go to the club’s greenkeeper who worked hard to get the course into a playable condition for the match. Country took out the title by winning the Seniors section 7.5-4.5 with Andrew Green, Jake Hallinan, Carl Lomas, Richard Sinclair, Jesse Rich, Tim Chambers and Forde Hanson all notching up wins along with Mike Toeke who had a half with Sam Purdon. The Masters and Junior sections were drawn. The Canterbury Women also had an outing providing the Selectors with the opportunity to see the players in action. DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR INIA LOGAN AT WANAKA & CROMWELL INIA LOGAN scored the double in the weekend men’s Otago trials winning both the Wanaka and Cromwell tournaments which were both played over 36 holes. Logan (16) shot 71 and 67 on the Wanaka course on Saturday 12th of September for a 3 shot win over Brandon Hodgson (Otago) who came in second with 70 and 71. Queenstown greenkeeper Scott Hansen showed his best form in this year’s trail series finishing third with and impressive afternoon round of 68. But Logan (Wakatipu Junior) saved his best for yesterday relishing playing on his home course scoring a six under par 66 in testing conditions yesterday morning to lead by seven shots at lunch. He could not repeat his morning form in the afternoon but his 76 in windy conditions gave him the win by eight shots from Michael Minty (Island Park) and Matt Tautari (Southland). Tracey Storer (Belleknowes came from
behind in the women’s section at Cromwell with an impressive 77 in the afternoon. Her score belied the difficult conditions and was the sixth best round two score including Otago’s strong men’s trialists. This was good enough to overtake morning leaders Robyn Chambers (Otago) and Abigael Crawford (St Clair) and take the title by three shots. Logan’s impressive form this weekend has him well placed to gain selection in the Otago men’s team for the triangular tournament in Invercargill during the first weekend in October. He is likely to gain one of the top places in the ten-man team as his form in the other trial events has been solid. Logan birdied the first and fourth holes with 4’s but made a bogey 4 on the difficult par-3 fifth which was his only blemish of his morning round. He tidied up with a birdie 3 on the ninth hole to turn two under but birdied four of the first six holes on the back nine to set up his impressive 66. At lunch Logan had a seven shot lead over Nick Borren and Daniel Elder (both Otago) with Brandon Hodgson (Otago) and Queenstown winner Fraser MacLachlan (Millbrook) one shot back.
