It’s been nearly a year since live telecasts of golf have been consigned mainly to the internet. So how has it been? And I just don’t mean for those who have subscribed to Coliseum Sports to gain access to the internet coverage but also for those who haven’t. It was on January 1 of this year that live telecasts of the PGA Tour and the European Tour, the world’s two most important golf circuits, switched from Sky subscriber television to Coliseum subscriber internet. Put that way it sounds like little difference. But it isn’t. I am a Coliseum subscriber. But I haven’t watched as much golf as I used to. Why would that be? It’s the same pictures, it’s the same commentary team and the coverage is excellent. Those who put together the coverage do an outstanding job. The difference is what I have to do at my end. When golf was on Sky, I turned on the telly and flicked through to the appropriate channel. Fairly simple. Now I have to turn on the computer, log in to my computer, click on Coliseum Sports, click on the appropriate tour and click on the appropriate coverage. And that’s just to watch it on a computer screen, which is not

Paul Gueorgieff

pgueorgieff@yahoo.co.nz

Are you getting your golf fix? really my cup of tea. To watch it via the television screen I have to plug in a cord from the computer to the television, remember which holes the plugs plug in to, switch the television to HDM something (clearly I have not done this for a while) and press the appropriate buttons on the computer. Okay, I know what you are thinking. That isn’t a lot to do. But it’s fiddly and fiddly is a downfall. I compare it to starting a car. You turn the key and it starts, hopefully. That’s not fiddly. Considering a car is a highly complex piece of machinery, starting it and driving it is very, very simple. There is no question television coverage is important to a sport. I notice when golf has been on Sky, people talk about. When it has been on Coliseum, they are oblivious to it. A good example was the recent Presidents’ Cup. It’s a high profile event, the internationals nearly beat the highly-fancied Americans, there were close matches and plenty of tense moments where the difference between holing a putt and missing it determined the out-

come of the tournament. There was also an amazing occasion on the Saturday evening. Weather had delayed play earlier in the day and when the last few groups were coming to the end of their matches, I thought it is getting dark. Then the commentators said it is getting dark. The brightly-lit buildings in the background shone like beacons as it got darker and darker. Jordan Speith was playing in one of the last groups and it got really dark. When he was putting on the second-last hole you could hardly see the ball. When he was putting on the last hole, you couldn’t see the ball. It was amongst the most amazing golf pictures I had seen. But when I later spoke to people about it, they hadn’t seen it because it had been on Coliseum. And because it happened on a Saturday night it did not get the reported coverage it deserved because it was overtaken by the events of the final day’s play. But like it or lump it we have internet-based telecasts of golf for a couple more years. Coliseum has signed up with the PGA Tour through to the end of 2017.

Geary poised to gain full tour card in the US By Paul Gueorgieff, editor Golfer Pacific

Josh Geary of Invercargill won his third Ping An Bank China Tour - PGA TOUR China Series’ event this season when he captured the Yulongwan Yunnan Open in Kunming. PHOTO:

J

osh Geary is headed back to the United States. The Southlander will next year play on the second-richest golf circuit in the United States, the Web.Com Tour, following his top form in China. Last month Geary posted his third win on the PGA Tour of China when taking out the Yunnan Open at the Yulongwan Golf Club. Previously he had won the Buick Open at Mission Hills in April and the Lanhai Open in Shanghai in June. The three wins had come from just eight starts on the China PGA Tour and following his in Yunnan he was a clear leader of the tour’s order of merit table. The top five players on the order of merit get to the join the Web.com Tour but it remains most important that Geary retains the No 1 spot. The order of merit winner gains a full card to the Web. com Tour while the other four receive conditional status cards. “I would like to finish number one because that means a full

PGA TOUR CHINA SERIES/LIU ZHUANG

card,’’ Geary said after his Yunnan win. “I’ve been on the tour before and I know how hard it is with conditional status. Nothing is guaranteed and I think you have to play well early (in the season). “With a full card maybe you will be be a little more relaxed about (having to) playing well early.’’ Geary was hopeful the Web. com Tour would lead to further opportunities.

“It’s a tough tour and I’m looking forward to using this tour as a springboard for next year. It’s been a good step for me between here and the Web.com Tour.’’ The final three events of the China PGA Tour are held in consecutive weeks, concluding with the interestingly-named St Andrews Open at Zhengzhou in the province of Henan. That tournament is held from November 3-6. He will need to juggle his sched-

ule carefully to ensure he gives himself the best chance of retaining the No 1 sport on the China tour while still playing in Australia and Asia. Geary’s win in the Yunnan Open was punctuated by two eagles. One was a three on a par five and the other a hole-in-one on the first day which was his first as a professional. “It’s my first hole-in-one in a competitive event. I’ve had six more but they’ve all been outside professional golf.’’ Geary won the tournament by one shot. He had scores of 66, 65, 64 and 71 to finish at 21 under par and it was his eagle on the the third-last hole that was the deciding factor. “I hit a great putt,’’ Geary recalled. “It was really slippery down there (the slope) but I managed to sneak it in.’’ Geary bogeyed the following hole but so did his main rival Gunn Charoenkul of Thailand and they both had pars on the final hole. Geary admitted his final round was not the best and was thankful

Charoenkul was not much better. “We both played good (on the Saturday) but today we didn’t play very well, so it wasn’t as enjoyable,’’ he said. But it was good to have a good battle with Gunn. It would have been nicer had we played a little better but it’s just one of those things where someone has to win. It happened to me this time, next time it could be him. He’s a really good player.’’ Geary has played on the equivalent of the Web.com Tour previously. He had a couple of starts in 2008, four starts in 2009 when he included a second placing, a couple of starts in 2010 and 25 starts in 2011. In the latter year he had three top 10 finishes but in the main struggled and Geary said it was not much fun, to put it mildly. “It was a lonely, depressing and expensive place I found myself in for a few months,’’ he recalled to the Bay of Plenty Times newspaper recently. “But with sheer hard work and determination I managed to slowly claw myself out of that hole and, basically, bring me back to where I am today.’’

Royal Wellington to host world class tournament A $6.5 MILLION redevelopment of the Royal Wellington golf course has received an early dividend. It was announced last month that Royal Wellington would host the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, which has quickly developed into one of the world’s most prestigious amateur golf tournaments. The announcement comes just a couple of years after Royal Wellington’s course at Heretaugna in Upper Hutt underwent a major transformation. The new course was designed by Scott Macpherson and former New Zealand professional golfer Greg Turner. Turner said getting an event of this size vindicated the club’s decision to invest so much into the course. “To get the nod is great, it’s not something [Royal Wellington] could even have envisaged before the big renovation,’’ Turner told The Dominion-Post newspaper. “They wanted to have a course for the members, but they also wanted it to be able to host any event that might come along. It’s tricky to do but I guess we achieved the brief.” The Asia-Pacific tournament has only been existence since 2009 but it has already produced some of the world’s most promising players. Hideki Matsuyama, from Japan, is a twotime winner and is now ranked amongst

the worlds’ top 20 professionals. The 2012 winner was Guan Tianlang of China. The following year he went on to become the youngest person to make the cut at The Masters at the age of 14. The tournament will be televised live in 160 countries with the winner gaining a start in the following year’s Masters in the United States. The winner will also gain a start in the final qualifying series to the British Open. The tournament is supported by it’s three founding partners, the Asia-Pacific

Golf Confederation, the Masters Tournament and The Royal & Ancient. As a consequence the cost of hosting the event comes at virtually no cost to New Zealand Golf. Royal Wellington club captain Andrew Meehan said in terms of drawing attention to New Zealand it was up with hosting a Rugby World Cup. “Hosting this tournament will give New Zealand international exposure only possible through an event like the Rugby World Cup,” Meehan said. “Hosting this tournament at Heretaunga

THE US MASTERS GOLF TOUR via Pebble Beach 2nd – 11th April 2016

is the culmination of a lot of work and considerable planning by many people. “New Zealand Golf has been working for some time to get the event to New Zealand including hosting a number of visits from both the Masters Tournament and The R&A who selected Royal Wellington after visiting and reviewing a number of great New Zealand courses.’’ Another advantage of being host will be that New Zealand will be able to have 10 players in the tournament instead of the normal maximum number of six per country. Any top amateur will be delaying turning professional until after this event, which will be held in October of 2107. Meehan said the event will be “arguably the most important golf tournament ever held in New Zealand.’’ “It will be broadcast live to more than 160 countries and give unprecedented exposure to our course, and golf tourism in New Zealand,” Meehan said. NZ Golf chairman Paul Fyfe added: “It is an extraordinary privilege for this event to be hosted in New Zealand. “It offers a wonderful playing opportunity for our best young developing players, and New Zealand has an opportunity to present itself on the world stage in a way not seen before in our sport.”

The U.S. Masters tickets & badges remain the most prestigious ticket in sport. Access to the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia is cherished by many, yet only a privileged few get the opportunity to walk along the pristine fairways & hallowed grounds of the Augusta National Golf Club. This is your chance to be there!

The US Masters Tour package includes: • All flights (ex Auckland) • All transfers • 9 nights accommodation including Pebble Beach Resort (4.5 to 5 star) • Badges for the final 2 days of The Masters Live at Augusta National

• Access to exclusive hospitality whilst at The Masters • Play golf at 4 top courses that include Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill • Time for shopping and sight-seeing • Non-golfers welcome

Aucklander’s first win in five years as a pro at Taranaki Open

A

STRING of one-putts on the final eight holes catapulted Joonsang Chung to victory in the Taranaki Open at Ngamotu in New Plymouth. Chung, from Auckland, had started the final round of tournament, sponsored by the Taranaki-based Augusta Funds Management, four shots in arrears of the leader Kieran Muir. But a disappointing final round by Muir and Chung’s red-hot putter in the closing stages changed everything. Chung ended up in a close tussle with Korean professional Woonchul Na and it was three-putt on the 10th hole that proved a timely reminder that he needed to sharpen up his game on the green. “After a three putt on the 10th, I needed to switch on and I did just that,’’ Chung said. “So I’m pretty pleased with how I putted coming home and for grinding it out. “We (Na and Chung) were both playing well so it made us forget about what was going on behind. To then hear on the sixth hole that I was tied for the lead was a bit of a shock.’’ Chung went on to score a fourunder par 68 which was the best final round of the day, a good effort considering the blustery conditions. Na had the equal secondbest final round of 69 and finished the tournament two shots behind Chung. The win was Chung’s first in five years as a professional. “It’s quite surreal,’’ Chung said afterwards. “I have always been the one watching on the sidelines so to be here after 72 holes is amazing. I

simply don’t know what to say to be honest.” Chung, 29, had a four-year break from the game due to bad form. However, he said it was the inspiration from fellow New Zealand professionals Danny Lee and Michael Hendry that motivated him to get back into golf for a living. “I struggled with my game for a while so I took a break throughout 2007 to 2010 and it was the

performances of Danny Lee and Michael Hendry that got me back out playing again. “I have been on the circuit for five years now, so it’s been a long time coming. The best part is no one knows who I am, I am the unknown,” Chung said with a grin. “I have been considering overseas tour schools and this has certainly given me more confidence as I look towards the next chapter in my golf career.”

Thirteen-year-old wins Taranaki Open T

he winning margin was eight strokes and the age 13. They are two amazing statistics to come from the winner of the women’s division of the Taranaki Open. The winner was Vyan Park who was a model of consistency over the four days of the tournament at Ngamotu in New Plymouth. Park had scores of 75, 73, 73 and 73 for a six-over par total of 294. That was eight shots better than the runner-up, professional Choi Sally. Park, from the Gulf Harbour Country Club, had a lead of seven shots going into the final and never looked like relinquishing it, scoring a oneover par on the last day. “My goal today was to go under par, which I just missed out on,’’ Park said. “But I was still happy with the round. With

the small field I just had to focus on my golf and play consistent.” Park included an eagle three on the par five seventh hole. “I was on the front of the green and was just looking to two putt, but it was very exciting when it went in,” she said. The win continued some top form for Park. The previous week she had won the North Island Under-19 Strokeplay Championship at the Waitangi Golf Club.

NZ Golf to entice more female Golfers N

Visit lovegolf.co.nz for more information #shelovesgolf

EW ZEALAND GOLF is attempting to entice more women into the sport with the ambassadors documenting their golf experiences via blogs and social media. Female junior numbers were the sport’s only membership category to increase last year, and it was hoped the women, whose combined Instagram following alone was in excess of 650,000, would provide further impetus. “The female segment is the first cab off the rank that we are targeting [in giving] clubs the knowledge, resources and tools to attract specific groups of the market, and further drive participation and membership at club level,” New Zealand Golf marketing manager Jan Rowsell said. Through November, New Zealand Golf’s new ‘fun and social’ hero brand will work towards breaking down women’s perceived barriers to playing golf. She Loves Golf activities – regional events and individual club driving range initiatives – are to be detailed on the She Loves Golf section of the Love Golf website from the end of October. “The main purpose is to showcase to females that golf is welcoming and fun,” said Rowsell. NEWS one of five New Zealand women chosen as ambassadors for New Zealand Golf’s November launch of She Loves Golf brand.

CASE STUDY: Manawatu Golf Club RIGHT from the outset the Manawatu Golf Club decided that the Get Women into Golf program would have to be very deliberate in its process. The aim was to get more women into the game and to overcome the barriers of participating in golf. Manawatu GC designed simple coaching clinics for women to come to the club and learn the basics of the game. Clinics were 1 hour – 1 hour and 30 minutes long and staged on two nights per week over a five-week period. A total of 66 women enrolled in the Get Women into Golf program. The cost of the five-week program was $69 per person. The 66 women were divided into groups of 12 to learn in the coaching clinics. Coaching sessions were focused on learning a little bit of everything in the game (sessions on the putting green, chipping green and driving range and rotated through each of these areas with the three professionals at Manawatu leading each area). Af-

ter the five-week coaching clinics were completed the women progressed to playing on the Manawatu Golf Club in a shortened format of the game. To begin with they played one hole and then five and then nine holes. All participants were initially required to “tee it up” on all shots except putting as this gave them all a far great success rate and accelerated their learning. After their five holes the groups would meet in the clubhouse for coffee and catch up to talk about their rounds. Women were offered special rates for nine-hole membership at the completion of the program. Results: The results were very pleasing for the Manawatu Golf Club. Of the 66 involved in the program 24 signed up for nine hole memberships with the club and another 4 joined Taihape GC and 1 joined Feilding GC.  66 participants All 66 women were asked to complete a feedback survey of their experience and all but one of the returned surveys marked the program 5 out of 5, an excellent initiative.  24 new members The only woman involved who didn’t give an excellent review did not agree with the format and even though she gave the

series a better than pass mark, she probably should not have entered.  5 weeks The Manawatu GC believed that these results showed it has achieved the outcome of introducing more women to the game and also making the golf club environment far less intimidating.

CASE STUDY: Mangawhai Golf Club MANGAWHAI GOLF CLUB are always looking for innovative ways to allow more people to experience the game of golf and the facilities they have to offer. Shop Manager, Nick Launder brainstormed ways of attracting more of the community and visitors to make use of the clubhouse facilities without necessarily having to play golf. One of the identified groups in the community was women. Specifically a group of women were identified who were either newcomers to the area or had partners or juniors learning and playing golf. Due to time constraints or lack of confidence those women had not engaged with the Club themselves. An event was held at the Club called “Afternoon Tee” and was advertised locally and amongst members to judge in-

terest levels. The success of that event lead to a further “Morning Tee” being held for those who had not been able to attend the first event. Over 50 women attended the noisy and jovial Tees and 41 expressed interest in golf, books, pilates, walking and art. The women, of their own accord, noted that they would like to have some informal group golf learning and practice. Geraldine Speed of the Mangawhai Golf Board with the help of Maggie Cameron implemented and drove this initiative. 32 women took up the offer of 4 group lessons over 6 weeks at a nominal cost. Geraldine notes that the Women’s Initiative was not just about the golf “It’s all about women getting together in our Mangawhai Golf environment, opening up our clubhouse to embrace wives, mums, partners and families into the fold. To spread the word that families and visitors are welcome.” Results  32 participants 32 women attended 4 group golf lessons over 6 weeks at a nominal cost.  7 new members 7 new memberships as at January 2015 from newcomer women.  Increased Engagement With new women, their partners and families enjoy the golf, camaraderie and facilities.

Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship will be a major attraction

R

ECENTLY I had the privilege to be part of an announcement where it was confirmed New Zealand is to host one of the world’s most prestigious amateur golf tournaments. The Royal Wellington Golf Club has been awarded the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship which will be held from October 26-29 in 2017. This will mark the first time the event has been held in New Zealand. As the event moves throughout the region, it has now been held in China (2009, 2013), Japan (2010), Singapore (2011), Thailand (2012), Australia (2014) and Hong Kong (this year). In 2016 it will be held at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Korea, which was the recent host course for the Presidents’ Cup. Having been in attendance for a number of these events in its short history, I can honestly say it is like no other amateur event in the world. The setup rivals that of a PGA Tour event and the opportunities on offer for the players ensures a fierce level of top quality competition. The tournament is supported by three founding partners. They are the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, the Masters Tournament and The Royal &Ancient. It is one of the largest tournaments of its type in the world, with the winner getting a place directly into the following year’s Masters field ass well as a spot in The Open Qualifying Series, the final stage to gain entry into The Open Championship. These are amazing opportunities for young amateur players. Established in 2009, the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship has quickly become one of the most celebrat-

10  GOLFER PACIFIC November 2015

ed amateur golf tournaments in the world with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama a two-time winner. Given it has become such a wonderful event, New Zealand Golf has been working for a number of years to bring this event to New Zealand and it is fitting Royal Wellington was selected as host venue. The club has hosted seven New Zealand Opens since 1912, and in 2004 became the first golf club in the country to receive Royal status. The course recently underwent a stunning redevelopment by designers by Greg Turner and Scott Macpherson, which included the creation of 13 new holes and new greens, tees and bun-

kers. The new layout resulted in a par-72 course measuring 7219 yards. There will be a number of benefits generating by New Zealand’s hosting of this event. Not only will it generate substantial economic returns for the Wellington region, it will create an enormous amount of profile and attention on golf. All going to plan, we will be able to use this profile as an enabler for growing participation and interest in the sport. From a global perspective, television coverage of this event will include three hours of live broadcast on each of the four days and a 30-minute highlights’ show. This will be aired in more than 160 countries, confirming it as the world’s most televised amateur golf tournament. This provides New Zealand with an almost unrivalled opportunity to promote ourselves as a golfing destination for international travellers – something all clubs in the country can benefit from. Perhaps most importantly however, this event provides an enormous opportunity for our young amateur players. As host country, we will have 10 players in the field as against six from most other countries. This provides our best young stars a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete on home soild for a place in the Masters field and the Open qualifying series. The players I have spoken to,since the announcement, are excited and as well they should be. This is a fantastic opportunity for them and a great privilege for us as a country. Bring on October 2017.

A voice from the south

Strengthening, stretching and relaxing — ingredients to good golf L

AST month I talked about getting back into golf after a three-month hiatus and my desire to play better golf. In talking with New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association (NZPGA) teaching professional Susan Farron, she stated that standing taller and smiling would actually have a positive approach for many golfers helping them to enjoy their game more, making them feel more relaxed when playing. I have taken this one step further and have started to try to laugh at my poor shots rather than rant at them. Mind you, it can be difficult to laugh after a three-putt. Now that I am starting to spend a little more time in the gymnasium and improve my golf fitness, I asked Susan for some more advice. She commented that regular stretching will make a real difference. A regular “all body” stretching routine will free up your muscles, enhance flexibility and increase your range of motion. For many golfers this will reduce back pain or any chance of a back injury happening. Pilates or yoga are also both great ways to prepare for golf and even stretching out the body after golf.

Working out in the gym is a great way to improve your game. Whether it is the upper or lower body, it will all help. Core exercise can definitely improve your game. Susan reminded me that golfers also require good wrist strength to release the ball from the rough, and to splash out of the bunkers, often shots that women consistently struggle with. Doing gentle press ups or tricep dips can help these areas. I advise women to strengthen these muscles so they can play these shots better. In addition, both men and women tend to be weak in their glutes (bottom muscles) which means we are not as stable and anchored at address. Doing daily squats and lunges will help improve a solid contact with the ball. Allowing your body to create its own sequence and timing is also crucial to lasting the distance without becoming puffed and straining the muscles when you advance to the ball. Over the past 15 years that Susan has been coaching, without a doubt the No 1 piece of advice that is common to all levels of golfers, from the learner to the elite golfer, is “Get rid of tension. Relax.’’ The tension for the majority of golfers goes unnoticed until you make it part of your routine to correct. This

means having a routine of calming your mind and body through consistent breathing. Tension builds and increases mainly in the hand pressure in the grip, but also is common in the neck and shoulders as well as the hamstrings. Tension causes the majority of golfers’ injuries. The pull, push and force of swinging a golf club using unnatural movements can be damaging. A great tip I learnt a long time ago, which was attributed to Gary Player, was that when driving to the golf course try holding the steering wheel a little lighter and feel the sensitivities of the steering wheel. You will actually be amazed at how this sense of touch assists with your putting stroke. Personally, one of my favourite tips for home, is to practice swinging with a club. The more that you swing the club in the backyard the better. Checking your grip, working on your rhythm and balance means that the rest of your golf swing will naturally flow. Thank you Susan, for all of your tips and recommendations. If golfers spent more time smiling, breathing correctly, getting fitter, stronger and more flexible, I am sure that it would go a long way to improving their golf games.

The magnificent Mr Kel Nagle K

EL NAGLE’S passing earlier this year at the age of 94 probably didn’t receive the recognition it should have in this country. Together with Peter Thomson, Nagle played the New Zealand circuit for more than 20 years, and it would be no exaggeration to say that these two great players built the foundation of professional tournament golf in this country. Kel first popped up in the 1955 New Zealand Open at Royal Auckland, where he finished second to Peter Thomson. His last victory here was in the 1975 PGA Championship at Mount Maunganui in Tauranga, at the age of 55. Over that 20 year period, he won five NZ Opens, seven PGA Championships, five NZ Professional foursomes titles, and many other events on the local circuit that contributed to a grand total of 81 professional victories around the world. Perhaps the most famous of those was the centenary Open Championship at St Andrews, Scotland, in 1960. Nagle beat the hot favourite Arnold Palmer by one shot. Nagle proved that was no fluke over the next six Open Championships, where he finished no worse than fifth five times. He nearly added the 1965 US Open as a second major title, losing to Gary Player in an 18-hole playoff. That was played on a Monday and both contestants were given a $US1000 bonus as their share of the gate receipts. As an aside, Player donated his entire winnings

12  GOLFER PACIFIC November 2015

($US25,000) to junior golf and cancer research, and gave his caddy $US2000 on top. Kel presumably took his $US13,000 back to Sydney. To put all that into perspective, Nagle was the leading money winner on the 1964 New Zealand circuit. He won the NZ Open at Christchurch Golf Club and the Caltex tournament at Paraparaumu Beach, north of Wellington. His total earnings were £1714. In today’s terms, that would be close to $80,000, and you would need to finish first or second in the NZ Open now to match that. But they did have to work hard for the money in those days. At one point the circuit included the 72-hole Watties Tournament at Bridge Pa, Hastings, played on the Tuesday and Wednesday at 36 holes each day. Then the players travelled to Paraparaumu Beach for the Caltex event on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday (36 holes on the final day), before travelling north to Wanganui for the Landrover tournament on the Monday, also involving 36 holes. That made 10 rounds in a week, prompting Bob Charles to write to The Evening Post newspaper complaining about the schedule. Charles made particular mention of Nagle, noting that he was keen to support the sponsors, but that the sched-

ule was too tough “especially for Kel Nagle: he is exhausted and for a man of 46 that is too much.” Kel though was far from spent, and it could be argued that he played his best golf in his forties. At the age of 49 he was still ranked in the top 10 in world golf, and he went on to win another 10 open professional events, plus a number of seniors’ tournaments. However, it’s not just the statistics that he will be remembered by. He was a true gentleman who was always humble about his achievements, bringing a relaxed attitude to the game which endeared him to the many thousands who followed him around New Zealand in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. He could well have curtailed his playing schedule here in later years, as money would not have been an issue then, if it ever had been with Kel. Instead, he saw his role as helping to grow the game through playing and giving value to sponsors and spectators alike. His memory will live on not only through his outstanding playing record, but also through the Nagle–Charles Trophy, which is played for as an annual “test match” between New Zealand and Australian Legends Circuit players. Thanks again Kel – we will not forget you.

Anthony Barkley

NZPGA Professional

Anthony Barkley is Golfer Pacific’s Golf professional contributor. He is head professional at Rotorua Golf Club. “Ant” is responsible for many aspects of play at the club. One of the main things that he sees his role is to help people enjoy their golf more. Over the coming month’s he will write these articles with this intention of writing about club fitting, coaching, the mental game and will include the occasional review of new products.

Improve your game A

s a NZPGA professional, one of my roles is to help people improve and enjoy their golf. To improve a person’s game we need to guide them down a road suitable to their needs. For a younger golfer the needs are different compared to a golfer that works full time and plays once a week so one tip or one method doesn’t fit all. TV and internet overload in regard to golf tips, drills and golf systems is now becoming more common. Information and understanding is great for any golfer so TV programmes such as The Golf Fix or even YouTube golf articles can be full of fantastic tips but to choose the correct drill etc is like pinning the tail on the donkey. You may get it right or look like the donkey that you are trying to pin. Prescribing the correct fixes are the role of a PGA professional as we are trained to look at the whole picture and with today’s technology such as FlightScope, at least checking with your local pro makes sense.

So with this in mind I want to pass on to you a drill I came across while working with one of my Rotorua Boys High students. We were working on the range on 50m pitch shots which was not his best shot. I thought about what we were doing and felt he was over thinking the shot. So I set up a small cone on the landing spot of the 50m pitch. I then got the student to see the shot 7 times before hitting each pitch. Within 10 balls the target was hit on the full. Then I tried it for 30m shots, target was hit in 5 shots. This was a great result and to be honest was a little unexpected. The student was a single figure golfer but the concept of thinking of nothing but target and convincing the mind through repetitive positive images worked. There was no room for negative thoughts as he was too busy with seeing the shots. I even gave this drill a cheesy name “The Power of 7”. So to adjust this drill for different level golfers just make the landing spot

larger and if you do find 7 too many try 5. The 7 shots that you see starts from the time you walk up to your ball but takes some practice and doesn’t need to take too long. I would be very surprised if you don’t see an improvement in results quickly after practicing this, but if not then I suggest any of the following: • Have your pitching technique checked by a qualified NZPGA coach • Attend some clinics on short game • Join a practice group • If you don’t have a coach close by, film your swing on your phone or ipad and forward it to me (ant@100percentgolf.com). For the ipad use the FREE programme called Hudi Technique or upload to Utube on a private setting. A fee will apply but I will send a video rundown to you. So that’s a tip from me today that can work for anyone that takes the time to try it. Just remember that change takes time, so be patient with your golf and enjoy your time on the course.

Caddies wanted for NZ Open

FANCY yourself as a caddy? Know the meaning of shut up and keep up? Would you like to attend the New Zealand Open and view it from inside the ropes? If you have answered yes to those questions then consider the following. More than 100 caddies are required for next year’s New Zealand Open at The Hills and Millbrook Golf Clubs from March 10-13 in Queenstown. At the last New Zealand Open, one of the volunteers Jaimes Wood, from the Royal Wellington Golf Club, had the experience of carrying the bag for the winner Jason Zunic. Wood described it as an “incredible experience that he will never forget”. Needless to say he will be on the bag again next year. With the format of 132 professional players and their amateur partners teeing off at The Hills and Millbrook on the Thursday and then swapping courses on the Friday, there will be a requirement for approximately 100 caddies for the professional and amateur players. On the Friday evening, there will be a pro-am cut of the top 30 amateurs and top 60 professionals (plus ties), who will go on to play at The Hills on the Saturday and Sunday. Caddies will need to register on site at The Hills driving range no later than Wednesday, March 12. Most of the caddy jobs will be pre-assigned ahead of arriving at the golf course. There is a $39 cost to register as a caddy. All caddies will receive a golf shirt, carrying a NZ Open logo, and a cap to wear while caddying and to take home as a souvenir. Dunedin professional golfer Andrew Whiley, who is tournament’s caddy organiser, said caddies should be social or serious golfers with a good level of fitness to carry the golf bag around The Hills and Millbrook golf courses. To register you can visit the official BMW NZ Open website, nzopen.co.nz and click on the volunteers’ tab for the caddy registration page.

From Nelson To St Andrews: Derek plays the old course JUST as the 2015 British Open had concluded, Nelson golfer Derek Drysdale took to the old Course as if it was the final round! Derek told Golfer Pacific, “one of my buddies is a member of The R & A, we got to play off the back tees, which was an experience I hadn’t enjoyed before on my games there. The course was in great condition even after the horrendous weather they suffered at The Open.’ Derek got on the first three greens in regulation but then 3 putted all of them, which he was very disappointed with. However he told us he had a round of 80, which is a great effort off the back pegs. “ My day wasn’t finished there though, as the four of us then went in to the R & A Clubhouse behind the first tee and after showering and changing in the magnificent locker rooms, we then went for drinks and lunch in the R & A lounge overlooking the course. “Being able to view all the old trophies in the cabinets was a real treat, and for a golf lover it was day to remember forever!” he said. Golfing in Central Otago ‘A World of Difference’ T he Mount Michael Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic is set to be held from 11th -15th of April 2016. Entries will close on march 1 2016 or when 500 entries have been received. Affectionately referred by Local Golfer’s as “Central” the founding philosophy from the five courses is to provide golfer’s from around the country and overseas five very different and exceptionally interesting eighteen hole golf courses at Alexandra, Arrowtown, Cromwell, Queenstown and Wanaka Golf Clubs. Played over five stunning, picturesque and unique golf courses. These golf courses are all unique and have evolved over many years being created out of the natural Central Otago landscape. The combined years of existence of the Golf clubs total in excess of 500 years. It is now wonder with the Quality Golf course investment like Millbrook, The Hills, Jack’s Point and soon Parkin’s Bay decided that Central Otago is the best place in New Zealand to develop their magnificent golfing establishments. They are all within one hour of each other and provide a varied and interesting trip before and after your round of golf. The event now in its fifth year has been 16  GOLFER PACIFIC November 2015

a phenomenal success. “Our first classic in April 2012 attracted a field of 242 and from then on we have been thrilled with our ability to attract good fields, obviously from comments and reports made these golfers thoroughly enjoyed their week. Entries are now topping 500,” said Tournament Director John Roche. “Our intention is to close entries once 500 have been received, this will enable us to keep to our basic ideology of not overcrowding the golf courses, with 100 players on each course each day, starting play off multiple tees at 10.00am the rounds should be played in reasonable time,” he said. John Roche explained the principles behind the event. “The Autumn Classic is not just another golf tournament but rather a true golfing classic for genuine club golfers. The organisers run the event and do all the work and planning. Players relax, enjoy the golf and the companionship of

other like minded competitive golfers in an environment that has to be seen to believe; that is “central” in the Autumn! Guidelines as to eligibility of players has been strictly enforced and for the 2016 Classic the maximum handicap that can enter is 36 for women and 32 for men. A true handicap must be based on 20 cards currently recorded on NZ Golf records. Prizes in excess of $40,000 will be played for during the week, with daily and five round stableford competitions, plus gross section for senior golfers. Daily divisions have maximum of 50 players with women in separate divisions to men and prizes are awarded one to every four players. The prizes awarded over total of five rounds are in handicap sections with again 50 players in each section. There are also Gross prizes over the five rounds with men and women in separate divisions. Of great interest and possible the most popular section is the teams of four. Each day the best three stableford points of the four are taken as the teams total and at the conclusion of the fifth round the most stableford points are the winners. In three divisions, Women only, Mixed (two women and two men) and Men only.

However many golfers enter as a single and will be placed into a team by the organisers. Karts and Push Trundlers are available at all five courses, selected accommodation specials at Queenstown is also available, buses will travel to golf courses and return to Queenstown every day if you so desire and tournament shirts can be ordered when entering. Here’s a sample of over 200 messages received from previous happy attendees: “Fabulous locations, courses well presented, friendly like minded people looking to have a great time together, very good value for the money!” “Meeting new people in post card perfect settings.” “The format and organisation was spectacular from beginning to end.”  We are delighted to offer you the opportunity to play in our 2016 Mount Michael Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic, just get an entry form! TRAVEL

Tasmania hosts Australia’s best tournament for club golfers

T

asmania’s appeal is undeniable. Year on year record numbers of holiday makers are choosing the Apple Isle and its 16 hours of daylight each day to make the most of their summer holidays. But, how can Tasmania - who does not command the golfing reputation of Melbourne’s sandbelt, the Mornington Peninsula, or the Gold Coast – attract nearly 400 golfers each January to host Australia’s best week of golf for club golfers? Well known for hosting Australia’s and Asia’s biggest and best value tournaments for club golfers, Go Golfing’s annual Wrest Point International Masters Golf Championship in Hobart has been voted the best amateur golf tournament in a survey of 27,200 golfers. The Tasmanian International Masters Golf Championship is a week of golf, entertainment and social fun that brings together nearly 400 golfers from more than 120 golf clubs. It welcomes men and women over 35 and you need to have an official golf handicap- whatever it may be. There are 15 divisions based on age and handicap, and you can be assured to play and compete with golfers your own age and standard. This is a four round tournament with all golfers playing two rounds at both Royal Hobart and Tasmania golf clubs. Tasmania is built on a bluff, surrounded by water and has a hole that is favourably compared to the famed 18th hole at Pebble

Beach. In stark contrast, Royal Hobart is built on possibly the flattest parcel of land of any course. It draws its character from tree lined fairways with towering gums, strategic bunkering that demands course management and cushioned fairways that are a dream to play off. Nicklaus, Norman, Player - all contested an Australian Open here. And the greens at both courses are fast and true – confident putters will excel. The tournament brings together golfers from every corner of Australia, many clubs and a smattering of overseas entrants. There are singles, couples and groups.

Over 90% of participants know less than 4 other players before the event starts and the Go Golfing team has a reputation for providing a friendly atmosphere and inclusive events so that everyone has an enjoyable and relaxing time. Go Golfing’s founder, Peter McCarthy, always ensures the event program is laced with fun, lots of laughs and a relaxed setting where people feel comfortable and included. “When a reclusive widow tells me that coming to the Wrest Point Masters has been the happiest week since her husband passed then I guess we are doing some-

thing right.” “We make sure we serve up quality food, wine and beer. We bring in world-class comedy for the opening night dinner and we always have a dance band on the final night who play favourites that have the dance floor overflowing. There are winemaker dinners, trivia nights, day tours to leading attractions, nightly happy hours and presentations, lots of time to let personality shine.” “We listen to the players. Many of the improvements we make to Go Golfing tournaments are inspired by the feedback from clients. This year we are adding a ‘single mingle’ before the opening dinner. This way singles and people attending on their own can get to know a few people and that’s more comfortable than arriving at a big dinner on your own.” “This is the 16th annual Wrest Point Masters and the Go Golfing event team continue to challenge themselves to make the event an event to remember. Even with 400 people, there are so many things we do to make participants feel special, including the non playing partners.” The 16th annual Wrest Point International Masters Golf Championship runs 1015 January 2016. Some players choose to extend their Tassie golfing experience and play in the Barnbougle 4 Ball Challenge from 16-22 January. For more information on both tournaments visit www.gogolfing. net.au or +61 7 5508 2250.

EVES 5 COURSE CLASSIC

Tauranga Golf Course Omokoroa Golf Club

LOCATED on the southwest edge of Tauranga City on the Racecourse Reserve and 10 minutes from the city centre, the Tauranga Golf Course offers a secluded and peaceful setting for golfers of all ages and ability. Only a two-hour drive from Auckland and a short trip from Rotorua and Hamilton, enhances the popularity of Tauranga as a golfing destination for visiting golfers from NZ & abroad. With a varied and undulating terrain, the Tauranga course has earned the respect of top amateurs and professionals alike as an exacting test of shot placement and

concentration. The course has interesting topography and variation in holes (it has been described as two courses in one) and its fairways and sand based greens are in beautiful condition as a result of permanent irrigation systems. The Tauranga Golf Course has an area of approximately 45 hectares, and is a Par 71 measuring 5571m from the back tees. With PGA Professional Jay Carter and a fully stocked Pro Shop onsite, Tauranga Golf Club is fast becoming the home for up and coming amateur golfers.

Omanu Golf Club

OMOKOROA GOLF CLUB is situated on a small peninsula on the Tauranga Harbour. It is a very flat course built on the harbours edge, and our 3rd and 5th fairways are below sea level. We have 5 different tees, so can cater for golfers of all abilities. And even though we are only 20 mins north of Tauranga, and 15 south of Katkati, we are a friendly country course that is so quiet, you can often only hear the birds and the waves lapping on the shore. In August 2011 we hosted the NZ Mens U19 Champs and there were only 10 rounds under par, out of over 300, which shows the challenge the course can offer

from its back tees. Our course has produced many great golfers over the years from NZ reps, Jan Higgins, Stephen Scahill and Andrew Stewart to current touring professional Kieran Muir. So make sure you get out soon to enjoy this hidden gem. You’ll find Omokoroa Golf Club on Links View Drive, which from the State Highway 2, turn onto Omokoroa Rd, onto Kaylene Place and onto Links View Drive. For more information, phone 5480384, fax 5482384, or email info@omokoroagolf.co.nz

ESTABLISHED in 1971, the Omanu Golf Club has built a reputation as the “friendly club” and offers a great golfing experience to its members and visitors alike. The golf course itself is of a very high standard and would best be described as parklike. The fairways are irrigated, mostly flat with some slight undulation and the rough is cut to a consistent length which provides a challenge for the better golfer but remains playable for all levels. It’s not just about the Golf at Omanu - the Club offers modern facilities including a Proshop , Café and Bar which all open 7 days per week. You will be

welcomed into the Clubhouse where you will find friendly people, good food and a bar stocked with

a variety of low alcohol options. Omanu Golf Club is a must play for anyone visiting the Bay of Plenty.

WINGER MOTORS & PAKURANGA PARK VILLAGE TOTARA HOSPICE SOUTH AUCKLAND GOLF DAY – A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

What made it even more special was that he was in the Fleetline Distributors team who sponsored the hole and he was using a new Bridgestone ball that the club pro Sam Thomas had convinced him to try only moments earlier. Sadly David picked the wrong hole to score his ace. If he or in fact any of the field had holed out on Hole 11 they would have won a 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i valued at $47990.00. The event was something of a passing of the guard with Alan Beale retiring as CEO of Totara Hospice South Auckland during the year and we took the opportunity to

WELL it could not get any better at Pakuranga Golf Club – a cheque for $21,000 for the Hospice, fantastic weather, the course in superb condition, a record field of 160 golfers, a record level of sponsorship and to top it off a hole in one with the very first shot of the day. Yes, David James (pictured) holed his tee shot on Hole 6 a few seconds after the starting hooter.

JOANNE WINS QUADRANGULAR STORY: TARANAKI DAILY NEWS

TARANAKI’S Joanne McDonald had a win and a half at the Dunes quadrangular in Te Awamutu last month. Despite not winning a match at the Dunes quadrangular at Te Awamutu last month, there were some encouraging performances from a number of players in the Taranaki’s women’s golf team. Taranaki lost 6½-1½ their first match to Auckland, then lost narrowly 4½-3½ to Waikato. In the final round, Taranaki were beaten 6½-1½ by Bay of Plenty. Number one Holly Winter had to play a trio of New Zealand representatives and while she only managed a half in her three matches, there was much for Winter to be encouraged by. Playing against Auckland’s Munchin Keh, Winter found herself four down after nine holes, but fought back to be all square after 16, only to lose the last two holes. She then played Chantelle Cassidy and secured a well earnt half. In her final match against Bay of Plenty’s Alanna Campbell, Winter lost one down in another closely fought contest. Her younger sister Tyla also found herself up against some high calibre opposition in the number two spot. She battled hard to half her match with Rose Zheng – a golfer many in Auckland say may be the next Lydia Ko. Against Waikato’s Brooke Hamilton, she lost 4/3, before losing her match against Bay of Plenty’s Emmalee

MANAWATU OPEN SHOWCASES TOP PLAYERS

THE Urenui pair of Eddie Hollard and Peter Hermann won the Sporty’s Open at Fitzroy golf course last month. Played in showery conditions, 32 pairs teed off for the combined net event. Hollard (70-5-65) and Hermann (80-15-65) had a combined score of 130 beating the Fitzroy pair of Shane McAuley (86-19-67) and Kerry Stockwell (81-18-63) on countback. Fitzroy’s Robert Koot (76-14-62) and Danny Joubert (89-19-70) finished third.

STORY: TARANAKI DAILY NEWS

THERE were also some encouraging signs for the selectors of the Taranaki men’s senior team following the efforts of a number of players at the Manawatu Open at Manawatu golf course last month. Played in wet and windy conditions that threatened to shorten the event to 18 holes, five Taranaki golfers finished in the top 10. Tumahu’s Joseph Doyle (75-75-150) finished second one shot behind the home course winner Regan McConaghty. Westown’s Andrew Searle (78-74-152) finished in a share of third. Inglewood’s Ben Joseph bounced back from a first round 81 to fire a one-over 73, with New Plymouth golfers Zach Lewis (74-82-156) and Fletcher Broderick (75-81-156) rounding out the top 10.

NEW ZEALAND TAKE ON JAPAN STORY: TARANAKI DAILY NEWS

NEW PLYMOUTH’S Murray Martin was part of the winning New Zealand senior men’s team which beat Japan by seven shots at the Asia-Pacific senior championships at the Qingdao Linghai Hot Spring Golf Club in China. Played over 54 holes, Martin (79- 84-74237) finished 17th – 18 shots behind wire to wire winner Eduardo Bagtas (73-72-74219) of the Philippines in the individual event. New Zealand’s victory in the teams’ event was in large thanks to the efforts of Frank Borren (78-75-70-223) who finished second and Andrew McKechnie (76-76-74-

GOLF TRAILS HAWKE’S BAY/POVERTY BAY

JUNIOR INTER-PROVINCIAL TEAM FINISH THIRD THE Hawkes Bay Junior Inter Provincial team has played very well and finished third in the NZ Inter-provincial championship at Waikato last month. The team comprised: Dallas Williams, Adam Winter, Thomas Alderson, Gabriel Winchop, Mako Thompson, Wade Williams, Taine Manaena and Kaleb Tawera. The Hawkes Bay Association congratulates all the players on their performance on and off the field.

WAIPUKURAU WIN ASHCOTT CUP 2015 THE final playoff for the Ashcott Cup was held at Maraenui last month between Waipukurau, Southern zone winners, and Hawkes Bay / Karamu, the winners of the Central zone pool. The matches were close, many going to the last hole, but Waipukurau proved the stronger team, winning 5 games to 3. This is the first time since 1969 that Waipukurau has won, and it was great to see two teams which have not featured for a number of years playing off in the final.

QUADRANGULAR TOURNAMENTS THE annual quadrangular team match play tournaments between Wellington, Taranaki, Manawatu / Wanganui, and Hawkes Bay were held at Westown Golf Course, New Plymouth on 10-11 October. Shand Cup (Senior Men) – 4th: The overall result was disappointing although in reality it was expected. With 3 of the senior players out for various reasons, the bottom end of the team did struggle. The top of the team (TORO players) were not far away which is encouraging for December. It was a good learning experience for the juniors in the bottom of the order. Sybil Green Salver (Women) – 4th: Shand Salver (Junior Boys) – 3rd: Many thanks to the selectors and managers of all three teams for the huge effort they put in organising the teams and for their support over the weekend.

Open Day was an ideal opportunity to invite the local community to sample our facilities and see for themselves, how stunning a course we have.” The Hastings Golf Club Open Day was held on 11 October; widely promoted as a great day out for families and those keen on trying golf. “It was free for people to come along and enjoy our covered driving range, short course, putting green and have a go in our Hole In One Competition. The prize was a $20,000 Suzuki Swift, so that was a very popular attraction on the day,” says Michelle. The Club also organised lots of free activities for families, including bouncy castles, face painting and SNAG children’s golf equipment, which was popular throughout the day. “Local presenters of The HITS, Martin & Sarah, were also present, giving out heaps of spot prizes,” says Michelle, “which really added to the atmosphere of the event.” The Open Day went from 10.00am to 2.00pm, and organisers estimate around 275 visitors came along to check out the club. “We also promoted a special membership offer, which attracted quite a bit of interest, and we even signed up some new members on the day,” adds Michelle. “It was great to see so many new faces at the Club, particularly the children enjoying times with their parents, on the driving range and putting green. We are delighted with the outcome. And the weather couldn’t have been better! ” Hastings Golf Club would like to thank

sponsors of the event, Bayswater Vehicles, The HITS and Grande Gourmet for their support.

SPRING THEN SUMMER GOLF FUN DAYS AT LEVIN GOLF CLUB DURING last month Levin hosted an open mixed tournament known as Spring into Summer pairs. It is a different format and a lot of fun. It’s played 6x6x6 holes at a time. The first six as foursomes, 2nd six as Ambrose then six as a best ball. The concept

is on handicap and stableford points. They had a very good field and all enjoyed pleasant weather and great company. The winners were Bruce and June Churchill from Linton Camp Golf Club. Bruce is currently their Club Captain. 2nd Rosie Priest and John Fisher. 3rd Gill and Roger Perring. 4th Shirley Calder and Ross Campbell. All from Levin Golf Club.

MANAWATU WANGANUI WIN SHAND CUP THE Manawatu Wanganui mens Senior and Junior teams came away with wins at the annual Shand Cup and Shand Salver played at Westown Golf Club in New Plymouth last month. It was a great performance by their teams against some very good opposition and is an excellent boost heading into the SBS and Toro events in November/December. Also encouraging was the performance of their women’s team playing in the Sybil Green competition. Our team’s had struggled at this event in the past couple of years, but this year challenged for the win right down to the end against Wellington, and finish 2nd overall. They had a 4 all draw with Taranaki, followed by a large 7 – 1 win against Hawkes Bay. Eventually they went down to Wellington 5.5 to 2.5, but the match was closer that the final result. The 10 player mens Senior team, was playing without Junior Tatana and Rhys Harold, who had to withdraw prior to the event, and therefore had a couple of players that are relatively new to representative golf in Shay Melis and Matt Francis. Both players competed very well and only had one loss from 3 matches. Rhys Watkins and Guy Perry both very familiar with the course having grown up New Plymouth, had 3 wins, while Regan Cording and Josh Sedgwick both had 2 wins and a half to remain unbeaten. At number one Lachie McDonald had 2 wins, and lost 1 down to Wellington’s Jonathan Cane, who was also familiar with the course having spent his early playing years in New Plymouth. At number 2 Hayden Ring, also a former Taranaki man, won his final hole against Wellington’s Kerry Mountcastle for a half, to ensure the win for the team. Ring drove it onto the final green, a short par 4 playing downwind. While taking driver is a risky shot, he forced his opponent into making a crucial error, resulting in the hole win for Ring. At number 4, Stu Smith also had a crucial last hole win, to halve his match against Brayden Mazey.

The 4 player Junior team, were trying to defend the trophy they won last year. Greg Shaw and Liam Finlayson were the rocks at 1 and 2, both winning all 3 matches. Jamie Connell also had 2 wins. The team had 3-1 wins over Hawkes Bay and Taranaki and a 2 all draw against Wellington. For the womens team both Katherine Paskins, and Jill Hall had 3 wins from 3, and all players contributed throughout the 3 matches. At number 1, 12 year old, Tara Raj had a difficult assignment, but played well, and had a half against well performed Hawkes Bay number 1, Kate Chadwick.

GLENDINNING CUP RESULTS SIXTEEN teams of four players competed in the annual district Glendinning Cup at Foxton Golf Club last month. The event has a long history and is designed mainly for

club committee members to mix and mingle with those from other club’s. The winners on the day were Taihape Golf Club and Linton Camp Golf Club, who tied on 141, being the combined stableford points of all four team members. Third was the home club Foxton on 138. The Foxton Golf Club was in excellent condition, particularly the greens which were rolling very well. Many thanks to the Foxton club for hosting the event. The members of the winning teams were: Taihape – Peter Valentine, Merv Tapp, Danny Mickleson & Marion Cleaver. Linton Camp – John Lahey, Cynthia Luckham, June Churchill & Colin Offord.

MCCONAGHTY & DURIE CLAIM MANAWATU OPEN MANAWATU members Regan McConaghty and Maraea Durie claimed the Mortgage Link Manawatu Open titles last month. Players had to endure very testing conditions, as both rain and wind played a factor throughout the day. This meant the Manawatu layout was playing close to its maximum difficulty level. Play on a couple of occasions was close to being suspended due to water starting to sit on greens, however officials were able to keep play continuing by sweeping the water off the worst of the greens. The men’s title ended up being a very close contest, however Regan McConaghty was able to hold off Taranaki’s Joseph Doyle by a single stroke. McConaghty shot rounds of 73 & 76, and Doyle 75 & 75. In 3rd equal place was Manawatu’s Stu Smith (77, 75), Rhys Watkins (74, 78) and former Canterbury rep, Andrew Searle (78, 74) who is now living in New Plymouth. Doyle and Searle were part of a 9 player contingent that came down to the event as a trial for the Taranaki rep team. Another shot further back was Marton’s Lachie McDonald (75, 78) and Feilding’s, Liam Finlayson (77, 76). For McConaghty this is a huge result, after a relatively slow start to the representative season. No doubt this would now place him within the frame vying for selection in the Toro team. Selectors will have a difficult task this year selecting the final

PLAY GOLF AT ARIKIKAPAKAPA

team with up to 9 players potentially in the frame for six spots in that team. Fittingly the conditions played in yesterday, are typical of conditions that teams have played in at times in Invercargill where both the SBS and Toro rep matches will be played this year. All players will be hoping that is not the case at either event this year. Maraea Durie, claimed the womens title by a massive 19 strokes, with rounds of 74, 74, which is even par off the womens course. Durie has recently returned from 4 years in the US, where she played golf as part of the College scholarship programme. In the US she became use to generally fine and hot weather conditions, so the conditions at Manawatu yesterday were relatively foreign to her in recent years. However that did not stop her from playing some great golf, and proving to selectors that she has the goods to perform well at Toro level. In second place was Palmerston North teenager Katherine Paskins with rounds of 84 & 83, followed by Manawatu’s Emma Clayton (84, 86) whom has had a long lay off from competitive golf this year. Congratulations to all players competing in the event, particularly to the majority that forged on to complete both rounds, in the testing conditions. 

GABRIELLE PALADO ADDS WELLINGTON MATCH-PLAY TO HER TALLY THE rise and rise of Gabrielle Palado’s golfing career took another step up when she won the Wellington Match-play Championship at Shandon the weekend (October 3-4). The 17-year-old from Manor Park Golf Sanctuary had a close tussle with Te Rongopai Clay from Titahi in the final but birdied the 17th hole to win 2 and 1. It was Gabrielle’s third important win in little more than two months. The other two wins were the Shandon Open on August 1 and the Wellington Stroke-play at Te Marua last month, when her nearest rival was 14 shots in arrears. Gabrielle believed her top form was

mainly down to making the most of her opportunities. “Recently I’ve been able to knuckle down and take the opportunities when they’ve come,’’ Gabrielle said. “I’ve found I have been able to capitalise on some of the strengths of my game. “For example on the reachable (in two) par fives I’ve made good use of my long game.’’ That was evidenced on the par five 17th in the final. She put her second through the back of the green, chipped close and sank the putt for a four. “I’m feeling more relaxed about my game, like there’s no pressure but still wanting to capitalise when I can. “It was very hard in the (windy) conditions today and it was definitely a good test of course management.’’ Meanwhile in the men’s division of the Wellington Match-play it was more of the same with former Manor Park player Jonathan Cane beating Mike Payne (Judgeford) 3 and 2 in the final. Jonathan, like Palado, has also been dominating Wellington golf in recent months. Jonathan also won the Wellington Stroke-play and the Shandon Open and added in the Miramar Open last month.

WELLINGTON STROKEPLAY STORY: FAIRFAX NZ

THERE were contrasting victories for Jonathan Cane and Gabrielle Palado in the Wellington 72-hole strokeplay golf championships at Te Marua played in September. Cane, the Wellington No 1, snuck home by one shot in the men’s event, ahead of Masterton’s Kerry Mountcastle, while Palado blitzed the women’s field with a 14-stroke margin. For Cane it was a continuation of his strong recent form which confirmed his status as the province’s top amateur. He won the Shandon and Miramar Opens in recent weeks, and was a model of consistency in the wind and rain at the foot of the Rimutakas. After rounds of 70, 72, 70 and 72, Cane (Royal Wellington) was even-par for the tournament but that was enough to claim the silverware ahead of Mountcastle, while Royal Wellington’s Ben Slaven was another shot back in third after he’d stormed to the lead with a second round of five-under 66. “I have just managed to keep the massive scores off my scorecard,” Cane said. “I wouldn’t say I have been at the top of my game but when I have got into trouble I haven’t done anything stupid.” In the women’s section, Manor Park’s Palado also stamped her mark as the best woman player in the region in the absence of Julianne Alvarez who has taken up a US College scholarship. The recent Shandon Open winner, who played No 2 for Wellington at last year’s interprovincial, carded scores of 76, 77, 80 and 77 over the two days to be a remarkable 14 shots clear of her rep team-mate Te Rongopai Clay (Titahi). Emma Hayward (Paraparaumu Beach) was third, four shots further back. Palado went into the final round with a lead of 10 and said she had no intention of simply protecting her lead in poor weather conditions. “I just wanted to go out and have fun. The weather was tough enough as it was,”

she said. This is the second year the team have been invited to play in this top junior tournament that is a key event for the future development of our Canterbury players. While the team came up just short of a team win against Otago going down 3.5-4.5 games in the final, it was a great achievement to be in a position to compete for the title. The tournament is played at an extremely high level and is a great opportunity to expose our players to the tough competition that exists against the best junior players from the ten provinces involved. he beat defending champion Jordan Bakermans 4/3 and then went on to beat Weatherhead in the final 4/2 for the title. The lure of playing at Pegasus convinced Grace Senior to return to the championship after she won the women’s title at Templeton in 2013. In her final against defending champion Juliana Hung she held a slight advantage throughout turning at 1up with Hung making some great up-and-downs to stay in touch. The women’s semi finals were quality matches with Amelia Garvey and Momoka Kobori both going down 2/1 in close battles. The Men’s Master’s Final was a replay of last year’s match-up which Aaron Forsyth won narrowly, however the tables were turned this year with Andrew Dufton winning 4/3. In the Women’s Masters Joanne Kent led throughout over Cheryl Kemp winning 5/4. Thanks must go to Pegasus for being su-

GIRLS FINISH FOURTH AT GIRLS INTERPROVINCIAL AT the Girls Interprovincial the Canterbury team played off for 3rd and 4th position, a great achievement with a new line up. They played Bay of Plenty in the final playoffs and finished with a 3 all draw. Juliana Hung was selected for the playoff and narrowly lost on the second hole. It was a great result from the Canterbury Girls team of Hillary O’Connor, Juliana Hung, Jasmine Rou, Jessica Crosbie, Lina Park and Amy Weng and of course it wouldn’t be possible without the Manager, thanks Elisha Crosbie. CO-HOSTING AGREEMENT SEES FUTURE OF BMW NEW ZEALAND OPEN SECURE IN QUEENSTOWN THE future of the BMW New Zealand Open is secure in Queenstown for the foreseeable future. A Co-Hosting Agreement has been signed between Millbrook Resort, The Hills and NZ Golf, which will see the NZ Golf flagship tournament stay in Queenstown for a further minimum five years, starting in 2017. Under this agreement Millbrook, Mr Eiichi Ishii and his family will assume the financial underwriting of the event (currently held by The Hills and Sir Michael Hill’s family for the five years ending with the 2016 event) for a minimum five-year period with an option to extend for a further five years. The BMW New Zealand Open is a million dollar Tier One event on the Australasian PGA Tour in partnership with the Japan Golf Tour. The 2016 event will be played from March 10 to March 13 at the

two iconic Queenstown courses. Under the new agreement from 2017, the epicentre of the Tournament will alternate from year to year, with Millbrook hosting four days and The Hills two days in 2017, and vice-versa from 2018 onwards. New Zealand Golf chief executive Dean Murphy said the organisation was “delighted” to secure the Open Championship for the foreseeable future in Arrowtown. “Our Open has a proud and distinguished history and we’ve been delighted with the tournament’s growth since relocating to the Queenstown region,” he said. “New Zealand Golf offers our sincere thanks to the Hill family for their considerable contribution to golf in New Zealand over the past eight years and we look forward to an ongoing relationship. “We also thank Mr Ishii and the wider Millbrook family for their vision and support of the NZ Open Championship to date. Not only is Millbrook one of the most spectacular courses in the world, their gener-

GOLF TRAILS osity to host and underwrite future New Zealand Open Championships is truly remarkable. “ BMW New Zealand Open Organising Committee Chairman John Hart described the news as “fantastic” for both the region and NZ Golf. He also paid tribute to Sir Michael and Mr Ishii. “By securing these two magnificent courses for a minimum further five years it gives the Tournament the impetus to continue its growth as an iconic event in the Queenstown and New Zealand calendar,” he said. “Without Sir Michael’s initial financial and logistical support for the vision of the Tournament, getting it off the ground in 2012, the BMW New Zealand Open would not be the world-class sporting spectacle it is today, attracting professional and amateur golfers from around the world. “We also acknowledge our sincere appreciation of ongoing Government support, which has been fundamental in establishing this event.” In a further demonstration of its support, Millbrook will become the principal accommodation provider for the 2016 and all future events, with all amateur players staying at the resort. Mr Ishii said: “Millbrook and the Ishii family are honoured to further strengthen our ties with the BMW New Zealand Open. “We believe this is a fantastic international event and underwriting the NZ Open is a further example of our family’s longstanding contribution to golf and tourism in the Queenstown and Arrowtown district. “Our recent purchase of the neighbouring farm, with the intent to expand to 36 holes, is further testament to that commitment.” The Hills managing director Emma Hill was thrilled that Mr Ishii and Millbrook Resort shared their vision to grow the tournament. “We’re delighted to see the progress this great Tournament has made since coming back to The Hills in 2012. We look forward to working with Millbrook and tournament organisers as we strive to achieve our collective vision for the event,” she said. “Sir Michael’s underwrite of the event for the first five years has enabled the tournament to go from strength to strength.” The news has also been welcomed by Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Adam Feeley. “Major events like the NZ Open reinforce Queenstown’s reputation as a world-class four-season destination offering the very best in wine, food and luxury accommodation and a vast array of outdoor activities. The brand of the NZ Open is a perfect complement to this reputation,” he said. “As an award-winning luxury resort and top-class golf course, Millbrook is an integral part of this. We’re delighted that their commitment to the NZ Open until 2022 will help grow the tournament. “More importantly for Queenstown, it will help promote the district to an international audience and deliver ongoing economic benefits.” Tournament organisers are going fullsteam ahead with planning for the 2016 BMW New Zealand Open, with exciting details to be announced over coming months.

HOLE IN ONE FOR A VERY “SENIOR” GOLFER THE ultimate shot took Tom Landreth 55 years to perfect. But on Saturday 3rd of October 2015, it happened. The 95-year-old golfer was still buzzing about his hole in one at the Cromwell Golf Course several days later but modest-

ly pointed out: “It’s taken me quite a long time to get one.” Passionate about golf, the Cromwell resident took up the sport when he was about 40 after retiring from tennis. He plays at least three times a week – 18 holes on Saturday, the same on Wednesday and then: “a bit of a knock-around on Friday with the oldies that do nine holes”. This particular ”oldie” makes no concession to advancing years. He usually walks the course, rather than using a golf cart. “There’s no hills, just a few rises so it’s not that hard going.” Mr Landreth plays off a 37 handicap these days and said his round of golf on Saturday had been unremarkable until the perfect shot on the 14th hole, which he made using a 3-wood. “I don’t hit them as far as I used to... I watched it and at first the ball hit the ground and then rolled along and I looked away. Next thing the guy I was playing with said ‘it’s gone in the hole!’, and sure enough, it had. ” There were congratulations, the club “shouted” for the golfers in the clubroom that day and there was ”a bit of cheek” delivered in his direction, he admits. However, the rest of his round did not quite live up to the magical shot. In fact, the ace was bracketed by 9 on the hole, before and 9 on the following hole. “I had some good, some bad holes, just like usual.” He believes a hole in one is a ”lucky shot” rather than a skilled one. “I guess if you’re a good player you have more chance of getting one but really it’s a lucky shot. Coming in below par on the round is just as satisfying.” Mr Landreth started golf when he lived in Milton and then shifted to Oamaru, Palmerston North and Dunedin, before retiring to Cromwell about 30 years ago. He worked as an industrial chemist and quality control officer for various woollen mills, starting at the Bruce Woollen Mill in Milton, which he was sorry to see go into receivership. His interests outside sport include Lions, Probus, and writing, especially verse. He loves golf for the exercise and the challenge involved. Having chalked up the ultimate shot, he said the goal of most players, as well as scoring a hole in one, was to get down to a scratch handicap. “I don’t think that’s likely to happen in my case, but I’m not worried.” His aim is to keep playing ”as long as the frame holds out”. Has there been a hole in one, in New Zealand, by a golfer older than 95 years?

OTAGO 2015 PENNANT FINALS PLAYED IN TESTING CONDITIONS THE Otago Club’s senior team won the pro-

vincial pennant title in strong gusty galeforce winds on the Balclutha course last month. The Balmacewen golfers retained the title after qualifying for the final by winning the metropolitan senior A series earlier this year. Scoring was good considering the conditions which were clearly illustrated when Otago captain Brandon Hodgson required a two iron to reach the 122 metre par 3 third into the wind while hitting a five iron 250 metres downwind a couple of holes later. Otago beat Lower Waitaki by 5.5 to 0.5 with junior Scott Clark holding the wellperformed Daniel Elder to a half for the Oamaru club’s half game. The Balmacewen golfers won two matches and halved one another in the afternoon to beat Arrowtown by 4.5 to 1.5. As there was no team from the South Otago sub-association the event was played as a triangular between Otago (metropolitan), Arrowtown (Central Otago) and Lower Waitaki (North Otago). This meant that only half of each sixman team played each opposition in the morning and played the other half in the afternoon to complete each contest. The Balmacewen golfers had the edge at lunch leading Lower Waitaki 3 to nil with a narrow 2 to 1 lead over Arrowtown. Lower Waitaki looked set for second place posting two wins and a loss in their morning match against Arrowtown. Otago No. 6 Harry Smith brought Lower Waitaki’s chances to an early end notching his team’s fourth win with a resounding 8 and 6 win over Harrison Maaka in the afternoon. Brandon Hodgson, Nick Borren Tyrone Ratahi and Harry Smith won their two games for Otago while Ben Patson emerged unbeaten with a win in the morning and a half with Arrowtown’s Ben Hamilton in the afternoon. Arrowtown No. 3 Chris Yallop was the only other player to win both matches while Scott Clark (Lower Waitaki had a win and a half. The Intermediate and Presidents grades joined the seniors at Balclutha for the annual finals. Clinton were too strong for Arrowtown in the first Intermediate semi-final and went on to thrash Ardleigh 6 – 0 on the final. Ardleigh made their way to the final with a win over Chisholm Links in the morning. In the Presidents section, Heriot and Port Chalmers met in the final after semi-final wins over Tarras and Tokarahi. The final finished in a 3 all tie and the Pennant was awarded to Heriot with a better hole count of 15 to 10. Meanwhile at Tapanui, the Senior B, and both Junior grades battled intermittent storms that covered the whole gambit of climate conditions. Gale force winds, rain and hail caused a number of delays in a day that players will not forget. North Otago proved to be the best survivors of the conditions to take the Senior B final from Wanaka by a margin of 4 games to 2. North Otago came through the morning semi with a convincing 5 1/2 to 1/2 win over Island Park, while Wanaka eased past Balclutha 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Gladfield took out the Junior A section with a win over Toko by 4 to 2, having defeated Ardleigh 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 in the semifinal while Toko and Queenstown fought out a 3 all tie. Toko qualified for the final on a hole count of 12 to 7. The battle for the Junior B title was also a hard fought affair for eventual winners Allan Grange. The South Otago club tied 3

matches each with Roxburgh in the morning, going through on a hole count of 11 to 6. Island Park defeated Ardleigh 4 to 2 in the semi-final, but Allan Grange eased by them to take the afternoon final 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.

BORREN WINS 2015 LAKES DISTRICT CHAMPS IN PLAYOFF NICK Borren two putted from 6m to beat Southland’s Jeremy Hall on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to win the Lakes District Championship on the Arrowtown course

on Saturday 10th of October. Hall’s tee shot finished 12m from the hole on the 161m par 3 and his lag putt ran 4m past leading to a bogey 4 and the loss of hole. Hall posted rounds of 67 and 71 while Borren carded 68 and 70 to tie at 2 under par on 138 for the 36 holes to force the playoff. Brandon Hodgson (Otago) did his selection hopes no harm when he finished 1 over par for the day to tie for third with local golfer Granville Joynes. Hall (Greenacres) held the lead at lunch making five birdies in the morning for 67 to be one ahead of Borren. In sharp contrast, Borren made a horrific start with a double bogey 7 on the second hole followed by a bogey 5 at the third. But those were to be the only shots dropped to par and Borren tidied up his round with five birdies and 10 pars for 68. The leading quartet played par golf in the afternoon _ Borren shooting 70 and Hall 71 to tie after the two roundsSungwoo Han (Wakatipu Junior) and Chris Yallop (Arrowtown) posted the best afternoon rounds at 1 under par. Ryan Shuttleworth (Wanaka) was in good form shooting 72 and 71 to finish fifth while Otago triallists Han on 142, Inia Logan (Wakatipu Junior) on 145, Daniel Elder (Otago) on 150 and Ryan Bellamy (St Clair) on 150 also finished in the top 12. With the Otago masters team due to be named, Simon Boland (Queenstown) led the over 40 golfers carding 76 and 73 to ensure his selection in the top quintet. 
