It will be interesting to see how Campbell measures up

M

By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ

ichael Campbell is gearing up for the seniors’ tour. It will be interesting to see how the former top New Zealand golfer goes. Will he be competitive or will he be a failure? Hopefully it won’t the latter. Campbell becomes eligible for the seniors’ tour when he turns 50 next February and initially he will have an age advantage over a number of his rivals. But he can’t rely on the age factor. He will still need to bring his A game with him as the seniors’ tour remains highly competitive.

And the reason the seniors’ tour remains competitive is that it remains very lucrative. That is clearly the main attraction for Campbell who has been retired from golf for a few years and these days is teaching golf in Spain. The most lucrative of the seniors’ tours is in the United States which is now known as the PGA Tour Champions. Bernard Langer from Germany is aged 60 but continues to make millions of dollars every year. His record is simply outstanding. Last year Langer won $US3.6 million. In 2016 he won $US3 million. In 2015 he won $2.3 million. In 2014 he won $US3 million. In 2013 it was $2.4 mil-

lion. In 2012 it was $2.1 million. He had a bad year in 2011 with only $650,000. In 2010 it was $2.6 million. In 2009 it was $2.1 million. In 2008 it was $2 million. They are truly astounding figures. I’m not expecting Campbell to match Langer. Campbell won’t be either. But it highlights just how money can be made in the game of golf by an over 50-year-old. Campbell has the ability, You don’t win a US Open, as he did in 2005, without a great deal of talent. Campbell has always had the talent but consistency has been his downfall. Because of his US Open win, Campbell has a lifetime exemp-

tion to play on the European Tour. Consequently he will play several European Tour events this year to prepare himself for the seniors’ circuit. Campbell is the first to admit he probably won’t be competitive on the European Tour. He won’t be able to match the length off the tee of those 30 years his junior but if he as much makes the cut that would be an achievement in my book. I’m sure we all wish Cambo well and imagine if he started to perform. That would give us another interesting New Zealand perspective along with Lydia Ko on the ladies’ tour and the likes of Danny Lee and Ryan Fox on the US and European tours.

Asian and Japan tour money winners headed for New Zealand Open GOLF NEWS

T

he two leading lights on the Asian Tour and the Japan Tour in the last decade, Scott Hend and K T Kim, are amongst the latest stars to confirm their places for the New Zealand Open. Hend, from Australia, has been in the top four on the Asian Tour order of merit in each of the last five years including top money winner in 2016. Kim has been money leader twice on the lucrative Japan Golf Tour where he has won 13 times, and played in the Presidents’ Cup. Their entries are a direct result of the co-sanction agreement with the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Asian Tour, and the developing partnership with the Japan Golf Tour. Hend and Kim have also performed successfully around the world. Kim has played numerous events on the Asian Tour and the PGA Tour, while Hend is a full member of the European Tour (where he has won twice) as well as plying his trade on the Asian Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia. The 99th ISPS Handa New Zealand Open, which will boast an overall $1.2 million prize purse, will be hosted at Millbrook Resort and The Hills near Queenstown from March 1-4. Hend and Kim will be joined by former major championship winner Y E Yang (Korea), who is renowned for being the first Asian player to win a major, when he defeated Tiger Woods down the stretch in the 2009 US PGA Championship. Yang, who has been competing on the European Tour in recent times, has now switched to the Japan Tour, having won it’s gruelling Q-school event in December. Amongst players also confirmed is the 2011 New Zealand Open champion Brad Kennedy, who lost in a play-off (along with Kiwi Ben Campbell) to Mike Hendry last year, and fellow proven Australians Andrew Dodt and Marcus Fraser. Dodt is a two-time winner on the European Tour, winning $1.56m last year,

which helped him to a world ranking well within the world top 200. Fraser is a six-time European Tour winner, with earnings in Europe of around $800,000 in 2017. He partnered Hend in the Australian team at the Rio Olympics, leading after two rounds and eventually finishing fifth. They join PGA Tour star KJ Choi, superstar Americans off the Japan Tour in Chan Kim and Steven Han, defending champion Michael Hendry and fellow Kiwis Ryan Fox, Tim Wilkinson and Steven Alker to confirm their starts in Queenstown. Tournament director Michael Glading said the confirmation of Kim, Hend and Yang is a considerable boost for the event. “I am confident that 2018 will be the strongest field in our time staging this event,” Glading said. “We have been chasing K T to come to our tournament for three years now, while Scott Hend has been the standout player on the Asian Tour over the last few years. Having a recent Asian Tour money-winner, a recent Presidents’ Cup player, and a major champion is a real coup for us. “These guys are in the top 200 in the world and seriously good players.” Tickets for the New Zealand Open are now on sale. A professional field of 144 players will play the first two rounds alternately at Millbrook Resort and The Hills before the second round cut of 60 players plus ties. The final two rounds of the championship will be played at Millbrook Resort. The tournament also hosts 144 amateur players, each partnering with a professional in a two-man best-ball event, competing for the NZ Pro-Am Championship.

FACTS AND FIGURES OF SOME LEADING NZ OPEN CANDIDATES K T Kim, 31, has enjoyed 18 wins in his career including 13 on the Japan Golf Tour. His performances saw him climb to a world ranking of 18 and selection for the Presidents' Cup in 2011. He has earned more than $11 million in his career, and was the leading money winner in 2015 and 2010. Kim did not gain a win in 2017 but he enjoyed seven finishes in the top 10 on the Japan Tour. Scott Hend was one of the first Australians to ply his trade on the fledgling Asian Tour in 2007, and after 20 years as a professional, the 44-year-old is in the best form of his life. He topped the Asian Tour order of merit in 2016 and was fourth last year, winning twice on the European Tour, nine times in Asia and five times in Australia. He moved to the Asian Tour in 2007 after two years on the PGA Tour, and represent-

4

ed Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics. YE Yang is best known for his victory in the 2009 US PGA Championship, beating Tiger Woods down the home stretch. This win remains the only time an Asian-born player has won one of golf’s four majors. Yang has won twice on the US PGA Tour, three times on the European Tour, and another seven times in Asia. After learning his craft in Auckland when starting out in his career, Yang returned to New Zealand for the first time in 2017 but missed the cut. Disappointed with his finish, he signalled his desire to return to make a much stronger account of himself in 2018. Brad Kennedy has won 11 times as a professional including the New Zealand Open at Clearwater, Christchurch, in 2011 when he beat Craig Parry in a

February 2018

playoff, and the NZ PGA Championship in 2016. He was also runner-up in the 2017 New Zealand Open in 2017. Andrew Dodt, 31, from Australia, has won five times as a professional including twice on the European Tour while compatriot Marcus Fraser, 39, is a six-time winner as a professional in Europe, Asia and Australia. He finished fifth at the Rio Olympics after setting a record eight-under 63 to hold the 36-hole lead. Marcus Fraser represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Fraser has won $11.7 million in Europe since joining that tour in 2003. He also won his last ever amateur event in New Zealand, winning the 2002 NZ Amateur Championship before turning professional immediately after that.

Golf the most boring sport to watch, says survey

G

olf has topped a poll in Britain. But it was a poll the game would have preferred to finish last in. The poll was conducted by YouGov, an international internet-based market researcher based in London. YouGov asked more than 1600 British adults what was the most boring sport to watch. Golf was the winner, so to speak. Those surveyed were given 17 sports to choose from and golf couldn’t even beat American football, despite that game being foreign to most Britons. The result was also surprising in that golf in Britain is boasted as having two million regular

players. What’s more golf was a clearcut winner. Seventy percent of the respondents said golf was boring to watch and there was a gap of 11 percentage points to American football at 59 percent. Following closely behind were cricket and darts at 58 percent each while fifth was snooker at 57 percent. If some of those figures surprise you then the real winner will probably surprise too. Of the 17 sports offered, the one with the least amount of votes considered as boring was athletics. Just 28 percent of respondents said athletics was boring to watch. The results of the survey did

not concern Keith Pelley, the chief executive of the European Tour. Pelley told The Telegraph newspaper: “Totally disagree and our fan engagement in 2017 would also suggest otherwise. “Last year, the European Tour saw large TV ratings increases, while our social engagement increased by 35 percent. “All sports need to modernise, and we are leading the transformation of global golf with our players being some of the world’s largest sports personalities. If the poll was accurate, we would not be as successful and able to grow our business as we are doing today.”

Michael Campbell getting ready for seniors’ tour

M

ichael Campbell is preparing for his golfing comeback. The winner of the 2005 United States Open, in which Tiger Woods finished second, plans to play several events on the European Tour in preparation for his ultimate aim of playing on the seniors’ tour. Campbell will become eligible for the seniors tour when he turns 50 next February. And even though he will initially have an age advantage, Campbell wants his game up to scratch from the time he makes his debut on the seniors’ circuit. Campbell has a lifetime exemption to play on the European Tour but said he would probably be very selective as to which events he plays. He said the days are long gone when he can match it with the longer hitters in

the game. Consequently he was likely to choose shorter courses when deciding which events to play on the European Tour. He would also look at courses he has played well in the past. Campbell, only one of two male New Zealand golfers to win a major championship along with Bob Charles, retired from playing golf a few years ago. He has turned his hand to coaching and has two golf academies in Spain where he has been living. Campbell had more than two decades as a professional golfer and he admitted it became a grind. “After 20 to 25 years on tour, it got a little bit stale,” Campbell told Scottish golf magazine and website Bunkered.

Campbell said his home life suffered as a consequence. “I was a very absent father because I was so busy in my own little world. I spent half of their lives away from them.’' Campbell said he had only played a handful of times a year in recent times but as a consequence had spent valuable time with his two sons. “The last four years I’ve been able to catch up, reconnect, and spend some quality time with them. It’s been wonderful. “I’ve lived a normal life. All the apps on my phone are about cooking. “When I was playing golf, I could barely make a poached egg. Now I’m a bit of a master

chef.’' “Something I’ve really enjoyed is just being normal – going to the supermarket, picking the kids up from school, watching them play sport, things like that.'' He said he is now ready to give the game another serious attempt. “Now, they’re (the children) on their way to adulthood – my eldest is off to university in Australia – so the comeback is great timing and I feel like I’m in the right mindset to come back now, too. “I’m just going to enjoy being out there and not expect too much.’' He will head to America to work with his coach Jonathan Yarwood this month and hopes to be back playing a month or two after that. He would like to play in Australasia and did not rule out lining up in the New Zealand Open in early March.

Whangarei and Wellington winners at NZ Mid-Amateur T hree great days and two new winners were announced for the men’s and women’s sections of the New Zealand Mid-Amateur at Omanu in Mount Maunganui. While rain threatened, it did not eventuate and nothing could deter the two winning efforts of Dale Clarke (Sherwood Park, Whangarei) and Kellie Orchard (Royal Wellington) taking the honours. Clarke won by three shots from an impressive field that included the defending champion Brent Curnow (Mt Maunganui) along with players from New Caledonia, Australia, Ireland and Tahiti. Clarke went into final 18 holes, with a two-shot lead over Scott Manyweathers (Harewood), shooting a final round of 71 which included three birdies and two bogeys on the par 72, links-style course. Clarke’s rounds of 69, 69 and 71 totalling 209, was a record seven-under par score. Manyweathers finished second with rounds of 70, 70 and 72 on 212 with Curnow in third place after rounds of 72, 73 and 71, seven shots off the pace, on 216. The best round of the 54-hole men’s championship was scored by Hayden O’Donnell (Tauranga) in his opening 18 holes. O’Donnell had to settle for a share of fourth place, (67, 74, 81) on 222. Bryan Toohil (North Shore) won the best net while Neil Weber (Omanu) the best stableford. In the women’s competition the chase was on in the final round with a team of women’s masters’ representatives trying to catch Kellie Orchard. She started the day with a two-shot lead over defending champion Shelley McElroy (Springfield) with Waikato’s No 1 Jill Morgan (Cambridge) a further shot behind. Five shots off the pace was Vaha Fapiano, who shot an impressive final round of 67, the best round overall for the women, to get it within one of Or-

chard. The later won rounds of 76, 75 and 75, a total of 226, 10 over par. Fapiano finished on 227 (77, 79, 71) with McElroy on 231 (77,76, 78). Best net for the women went to Wendy Roach and the best stableford to Carol Fouhy. They are both from the Ngaruawahia Golf Club. PaR nz Golfing Holidays, which manages the tournament on behalf of New Zealand Golf, confirmed at the 2019 New Zealand Mid-Amateur would return to Omanu for the third consecutive year.

ackie Merritt (Te Puke), Lesley Rayner (Fairview) and David Butcher (Warkworth) join Kellie Orchard (Royal Wellington) and Dale Clarke (Sherwood Park) as national winners crowned at Golf Omanu Golf Club, in January, 2018! Orchard and Clarke had in the past weekend taken out the NZ Women’s and Men’s Mid-Amateur Championships respectively. Merritt won the women’s handicap division 0-14 (9 hole handicaps) in the 27-hole Masters by 6 shots, with scores of 18 and 18 along with a blistering 24 points today, for a

grand total of 60. In second place was Beryl Madsen from Omaha Beach on 54 points (15, 21, 18) with Joanne Burt (Te Puke) a further 3 points behind in 3rd place (16, 15, 20). In the 2nd women’s division for players with handicaps 15+, line honours went to Lesley Rayner (Fairview) with scores of 20, 18 and 19 to total 57, 3 shots ahead of the field. Second place was awarded to Bella Boston (Warkworth) with 54 points (20, 20, 14) with third going to Elaine Rattigan (Paeroa) on 52 with rounds of 16, 19 and 17. David Butcher (Warkworth) was Mr Consistent over the three rounds

In second place was Brian Davidson (Pukekohe) on 45 points (18, 13, 14) with Keith Stone (Warkworth) in 3rd place with 44 points (17, 11, 16). The New Zealand 9-Hole Masters was the brain-child of passionate nine-holer Barbara Nock from the Bay of Islands Golf Club. The Kerikeri based club has hosted the national tournament from 2014 – 2016 when it was moved to Golf Omanu this year. ANNIKA SORENSTAM HELPED SHAPE THE GAME OF GOLF FOR WOMEN

F

ew people have the talent and charisma to shape the direction of a sport. In golf, Annika Sörenstam is one of the rare athletes to have made a remarkable impact, helping forge a path for women golfers worldwide. During her 15-year career Sörenstam rewrote the way women’s golf was played, viewed and covered. The Swede – also known as the first lady of golf – is considered a modern-day equivalent of the great Arnold Palmer – the first golfer to be part of the family of Rolex testimonees. Similar to what Palmer did for the men’s game, Sörenstam greatly contributed to the commercial success of the women’s game as it is today. Sörenstam, who became a Rolex testimonee in 1994, reflects the precision, performance, reliability and uncompromising quality that defines the Rolex brand. Her pursuit of perfection and self-confidence have taken her to the pinnacle of her sport. She is the only female player to have shot a score of 59 – an astonishing 13 shots below the par of the course, and, at the time, was only the sixth player to have shot below 60. “I believe in my mind I can have the perfect round”, Sorenstam said. “I think it’s important to set the bar really high”. Throughout her impressive career, Sörenstam amassed six Vare trophies for the player on tour with the lowest average score each year, on top of a record eight player of the year awards. Accolades such as these highlight her enduring quality and dominance in the women’s game. Sörenstam turned professional in 1992 aged 22 and three years later in 1995 she won the US Women’s Open. This was the first of an incredible 10 major championship wins, in addition to her 72 LGPA Tour victories up until 2008. However, it is not only her tournament victories that Sörenstam cites as the highlights of her career. In 2003, she became the first woman since 1945 to compete in a field of male players at the Bank of America Colonial Tournament, part of the PGA Tour. Having the opportunity to provide such exposure for

women’s golf is something that the Swede has said she “wouldn’t trade for anything” and that people “realised this was a historic moment in sports”. Despite Sörenstam having not played on the tour for almost a decade, she has refused to declare retirement. “There’s a reason I haven’t used the R word,” she said. She may have stepped away from the field, but her passion for the game of golf has meant that even away from the course, Sorenstam has been as prolific in golf as she was on it. Being on tour for so many years has allowed Sorenstam to experience playing a vast array of courses, leading her to branch out with huge success into golf course design. Annika Course Design has completed nine courses globally in countries including China, South Africa and Estonia, epitomising her global vision of golf. She has also spoken of designing courses that “golfers of any age, gender or skill level can enjoy equally” yet insists that all course designs “preserve the environment, spirit and traditions of the game”. The ambition of developing golf worldwide and increasing its inclusivity while conserving the traditions and heritage of the game are what makes Annika such an iconic ambassador of golf. In 2008 Sörenstam was named a United States Golf Association ambassador and in her role, aims to make the game more accessible to players of all skill levels. A year later, the International Golf Federation also named her a global ambassador, and it was in part thanks to her support that golf was added to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Annika Foundation was born to promote the education of children in healthy living, as well as to offer junior golfers opportunities to pursue their dreams. Annually, five major golf events are held for aspiring junior girls. In 2016, in conjunction with The R&A, the Annika Invitational was held in Argentina. Her work with the guardians of the global game, such as The R&A, as well as her work with junior girls demonstrate Annika’s passion for advancing the game at every level.

… and Lydia Ko has tried her best to follow in her footsteps

A

nnika Sörenstam’s exceptional career has inspired a new generation of players, none more so than New Zealand’s Lydia Ko. Having only turned 20 last April, Ko has achieved more during her teenage years as a golfer than most do in a career. Despite only turning professional in 2013, Ko already holds 12 LGPA Tour wins as well as two major championship titles. A record 130 weeks as the top-ranking amateur set the precedent for Ko to become the youngest player of either gender to achieve No 1 status as a professional. She was first ranked No 1 in the official Rolex world rankings on February 2, 2015 at the age of 17 years, nine months and nine days. Meticulous technical precision is a hallmark of the master watchmakers who work on the intricate mechanical movements of a Rolex timepiece. These qualities can be found in the playing style of Ko. Rolex is the official timekeeper and partner to many of the world’s finest tournaments, including The Evian Championship, where Ko became the youngest woman to win a major championship in 2015. Victory at this tournament cemented Ko as a true star in world golf. She cited the event as having “an incredibly unique spirit” with “its prestige evident from its past-champions, such as my fellow Rolex testimonee, Annika Sörenstam, who I take great inspiration from on and off the golf course.” Ko went on to make history by recording back-to-back major victories at the ANA Inspiration in 2016, becoming the youngest golfer to win two women major championships in a row. In 2011, Sörenstam, in conjunction with Rolex and the LGPA, created an award that recognises the player with the outstanding record in all five women major championships. Points are awarded to players who finish most often in top 10 positions and ties, a fitting tribute to the relentlessly consistent champion Sörenstam is. The iconic Swede has stated that while “tournament winners are celebrated, major winners make history”. Indeed, it seemed fitting that in the 2016 season Ko claimed the sought-after title and paid homage to her golfing predecessor. “Just to have it named after Annika and how successful she’s been in majors and just in general, and what she’s done for the game,” Ko said. “I think some of us might not be here if it wasn’t for a player like her.” Ko is the torchbearer for the new golfing generation and bares the same passion for the sport that saw Sörenstam inducted a member of the world golf hall of fame. The Swedish icon sees a bright future for women’s golf and said of Ko: “She is responsible for sparking increased interest in our sport not just in her native South Korea and adopted homeland of New Zealand, but also among juniors across the globe.”

World Cup booked for Melbourne in November GOLF NEWS

T

he 59th edition of the World Cup of Golf returns to Australia in November at The Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne. The tournament has been scheduled for November 21-25 and it is the only event that sees the world’s best come together and compete for their countries, outside of the Olympics. Each team comprises two players. The World Cup is one of five events co-sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours. It is an historic event which has been played 58 times since 1953 in 25 countries. “The World Cup of Golf has been a celebrated and valued tradition in the game for decades,” said Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner. “The International Federation of PGA Tours is proud to see that tradition continue in 2018 with the best players from around the globe convening at The Metropolitan Golf Club. “Golf in the sand belt region (of Melbourne) speaks for itself, and we appreciate The Metropolitan Golf Club opening its doors for this historic team event.” What differentiates the World Cup is the opportunity for the highest-ranked player from each competing country to choose his playing partner, thus maximising the camaraderie and competitive spirit. The 2018 event will continue with the same format from 2016, with the first and third days of competition played as four-ball (best ball) format and the second and final days as foursomes (alternate shot) play. Several organisations (Visit Victoria, Golf Australia, the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia, Lagardere and the PGA Tour) worked in collaboration to ensure the stretch of professional

golf in Australia with three consecutive world-class events (Emirates Australian Open, Melbourne World Cup of Golf and Australian PGA Championship) would become a reality in 2018. Melbourne World Cup of Golf executive director Robyn Cooper said: “It is a thrill to bring this unique, global team event back to Melbourne and the sand belt region. “We appreciate the strong co-operation of all involved to ensure Australia’s golf fans would be able to enjoy this team competition in the sand belt region. A special thank you goes to Golf Australia and Lagardere for working with us to resolve some scheduling challenges. The group’s overall combined efforts are certainly in the best interests of golf fans in Australia.” The Melbourne World Cup of Golf

brought significant global star power to the sand belt region in 2016, with 17 of the top 50 players in the world on hand, including Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, Jimmy Walker, Alex Noren, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Shane Lowry, An Byeong-hun and Russell Knox. Players outside the top 50 at the start of the 2016 event that are currently among the top 50 include Jon Rahm (4), Marc Leishman (13) and Jhonattan Vegas (43). The 2018 event will mark the third consecutive playing of the World Cup in the sand belt region. Danes Søren Kjeldsen and Thorbjørn Olesen captured the 2016 edition at Kingston Heath Golf Club, while Aussies Scott and Jason Day were victorious at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in 2013. Following the 2018 Melbourne World

Cup, the sand belt region will again grab the spotlight as the 2019 Presidents’ Cup is staged at Royal Melbourne for a third time. The Victorian minister for tourism and major events John Eren said: “We’re getting it done – making Victoria Australia’s home of golf by bringing the best domestic and international tournaments right to our doorstep. “The flow on effects from these types of events are huge – they give visitors another reason to come to Melbourne and make our economy stronger.” The 2018 Melbourne World Cup will mark the sixth time in the tournament’s history that it will be played in Australia, which is the second-most alltime behind the United States at 11. Visit Victoria chief executive officer Peter Bingeman said: “Our aspiration is for the Melbourne sand belt to become a bucket list destination for golf enthusiasts globally, and that’s why we are thrilled to once again partner with PGA Tour to showcase Melbourne’s courses to the world. “In 2016 we highlighted Kingston Heath, in 2018 we celebrate Metropolitan and in 2019 the Royal Melbourne Golf Club hosts the Presidents Cup.” Metropolitan club captain Marcus Harty added: “The Metropolitan Golf Club is proud to be selected to host the World Cup of Golf 2018. “The tournament has a rich history featuring the greatest golfers from across the eras and we look forward to welcoming the current generation of greats to Metropolitan. We are excited that we will have the opportunity to further showcase the Melbourne Sandbelt to the world, particularly our own ‘Metro’ with its unique architecture and highly-regarded course conditioning.”

More than $US180 million for charity from the PGA Tour in 2017 GOLF NEWS

T

he PGA Tour and its tournaments generated more than $US180 million for charitable causes in 2017, surpassing the previous year’s record amount by approximately $US14 million. The $US180 million includes donations made by tournaments on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, Web.com Tour, Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada, PGA Tour Latinoamérica and PGA Tour-China. The amount brings the all-time total generated for charity by the PGA Tour to $US2.65 billion. The tour surpassed $US1 billion in 2005 and $US2 billion at the beginning of 2014. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said: “The entire PGA Tour family takes tremendous pride in the positive impact that we continue to make each year through the millions of dollars that are raised for very deserving charitable organisations. “As we often note, beyond the sheer dollar amount, the real story is in the hundreds of thousands of lives that benefit from these contributions every year. Thank you to all of the tournaments,

players, sponsors, volunteers and fans who make all of this possible.” In 2017, five PGA Tour events raised more than $US10 million for charity – the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Valero Texas Open, Dean & Deluca Invitational, the John Deere Classic and the Waste Management Phoenix Open. In addition to those tournaments, the biennial Presidents’ Cup announced a record donation of more than $US10.7 million as a result of the 2017 event held at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. The PGA Tour’s flagship event, The Players Championship, generated $US8.7 million in 2017, a large portion of which benefits local children’s charities as part of the tournament’s commitment to generate $US50 million for youth-related charities over 10 years. Since that commitment was made in April of 2011, $US45 million has been raised toward that goal. There were six PGA Tour Champions events which

More than $US10 million raised from Presidents' Cup T he PGA Tour has announced that more than $US10.7 million from last year’s Presidents' Cup will be distributed to charitable causes around the world as chosen by the 34 players, captains and captain’s assistants, a record-setting amount for the competition. Since the inception of the Presidents’ Cup in 1994, more than $US49.1 million has been generated from event proceeds. Over the past 23 years, the Presidents' Cup has impacted more than 450 charities in 16 countries. The Presidents’ Cup, a team matchplay competition featuring 24 of the world’s top golfers – 12 from the United States and 12 from outside Europe – is held every two years, and since 1996 has alternated between venues in the United States and around the world. Last October, the US team retained the cup from the internationals with an impressive performance at Liberty National Golf Club, located in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty across the Hudson River from New York City. The Presidents' Cup is a unique golf event in that there is no purse or prizemoney. Players are not paid for their participa-

tion. Instead, each player, captain and captain’s assistant allocates an equal portion of the funds generated to charities of their choice. Last year, that portion was $US150,000 per participant. “Staged in arguably the most global and diverse city in the world, the 2017 Presidents Cup will go down as one of the most impactful of all time,” said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. “From having three past US presidents on the first tee on Thursday to having the sitting US president hand over the Presidents’ Cup to the winning team for the first time, the Presidents' Cup as a celebration of golf reached new heights. “With this announcement of $US10.7 million to charities around the world, we are also able to celebrate the new heights achieved by the event’s commitment to charitable giving,” Monahan said. “I’d like to thank every player, captain and the captain’s assistants for putting on a great display of camaraderie, sportsmanship and competitive fire, and also for reaching into their communities and to charities around the world to put these dollars to good use.”

each generated more than $US1 million to charity in 2017, with the Shaw Charity Classic leading the way at more than $US6 million. There were three Web.com Tour events which each generated more than $US1 million, led by the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship at more than $US2.1 million. Unlike other professional sports organisations, the PGA Tour relies on more than 100,000 volunteers annually to run its tournaments, and the vast majority of its tournaments are structured as non-profit organisations designed to donate 100 percent of net proceeds to charity. Community beneficiaries include a broad range of organisations such as hospitals and shelters, youth development programmes, food banks, groups that support the military and their families, organisations that support senior citizens, those that help abused women and children and growth-of-the-game initiatives.

Australian golf bodies form closer ties

T

he Professional Golfers Association of Australia (PGA) and Golf Australia (GA) have commenced a new initiative to reduce duplication between the two bodies and improve efficiencies around operations. Following on from the success of the mygolf joint venture between the bodies, GA and PGA are commencing a new joint venture that will include media services and tournament delivery. The new venture will commence operating in the first quarter of 2018 and will help to ensure that there is a more seamless delivery of events and greater clarity around communication. “GA and PGA have been working together for a number of years on mygolf plus other collaborative programmes such as community instructor inclusion and golf and club support and that co-operation has yielded really good results and growth, so we see this as an extension of that process,” PGA chairman

Peter O’Malley said. “We know there’s duplication in some areas of our operations and we’re keen to keep addressing and improving on those things. “Both organisations have a number of staff in these areas and this is about bringing them more closely together to get the best output, make golf more visible and have the best events possible.” GA chairman John Hopkins echoed those sentiments and said the bodies had made a concerted effort to be as cohesive as possible for the benefit of the game. “The role of both organisations is to make the game stronger and a united voice, approach and vision for the game is really important,’’ Hopkins said. “A number of bodies in Australian golf over the past few years have made a concerted effort to work together to reduce fragmentation within the industry and we see this JV between PGA and GA being an important step in that process.”

GOLFCOMMENT By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south

T

his will be my last column for the Golfer Pacific magazine as I move onto other opportunities, but I have really enjoyed my last six years as a columnist. Some months, it’s been easier to write than others and then there has been the odd month where I have really struggled to find an issue that I thought would resonate with you, the reader. During the time that I’ve been involved with Golfer Pacific, my life has changed. I remember writing several columns early on about junior golf and seeing what my kids loved about the game and what would attract them and their friends to golf. Sadly, I don’t believe the game has really hit the mark and we still don’t have a national “get-into-golf” programme for young golfers. However, the likes of “She Loves Golf” has been successful and embraced, thanks to good branding and the hard work being done by many PGA golf professionals around the country. Another big personal change for me has been that I have gone from being fully engaged in golf club activities as the club professional/director of golf at Chisholm Park Golf Club in Dunedin to now being a

My final word after six years member (and paying my dues) as I fulfil my role as an elected Dunedin City councillor. Turning up at the golf club and paying my competition fee and playing my 23 rounds of golf in the last year, I have often wondered is it worth it? This is one of the biggest issues I see facing golf club’s today. How will golf clubs attract new members and how do they retain members that struggle with the number of rounds they are playing versus the cost of membership? I have always been outspoken about golf clubs needing to provide good governance and having a board that is focused on the best outcomes for the club versus being focused on the personal wants or goals of particular board members. Boards and clubs need to work from a strong business plan which everyone involved in the club has had some input into and can support. Unfortunately, from what I have seen around the country, this is still a rarity and many of the talented club members are never attracted to the club’s governance roles as they don’t want to be involved in the “politics

of personality” at their clubs. Having a clear pathway with the right people in leadership roles and you will see most golf clubs heading in the right direction. Some of my favourite interest columns were about topics such as the “Taumarunui Golf Legend” Bob Doms, who joined the NZPGA in 1955, and who contributed an unbelievable amount to the game over the years. Also, I was excited by the Remuera Golf Club and the honey that comes from the local bees which showed how eco-friendly golf clubs have become today. Plus I’ve enjoyed writing about the talented PGA golf pros that we have working in the golf industry here in New Zealand and internationally. Reading through some of my old columns, I see the biggest growth for New Zealand golf has occurred in golf tourism, particularly through partnerships with events such as the New Zealand Open in Queenstown. Recent New Zealand tourism statistics show that the number of golf tourists coming to the country has tripled over the last eight years and they are some of the highest spenders that are travelling

to our country. It is predicted that they will spend in excess of $400 million in 2018. When John Hart and Sir Michael Hill came together and launched the 2011 NZPGA Championship, now the NZ Open, this also changed the face of professional golf in New Zealand. The pro-am format, using the The Hills and Millbrook courses has proven to be a major success. Not only has the event allowed emerging New Zealand golf talent jump onto the world stage but it has also seen the Asian and Japanese tours engage with the event; culminating in this year’s open being broadcasted to over 180 countries. Overall, we have seen progress for the game of golf in New Zealand since I started my involvement writing for Golfer Pacific. We still have some work to do to ensure that we retain the level of participation and engagement at the local club level as well as at the professional level in this country. It will take keen individuals with a passion for the game to inspire us. Good luck to those of you who are continuing this work out there and happy golfing.

Five great reasons to have a PGA golf professional help you take your game to a new level By Dominic Sainsbury New Zealand PGA General Manager

Thinking of getting a golf lesson? Not sure who to go to? Following are five great reasons to have a PGA golf professional assist you in taking your game to a new level of enjoyment. The New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association is very proud of the quality and standard of coaches, club fitters, managers, event organisers and game developers it produces through its threeyear diploma programme. But the real beneficiaries are the thousands of golfers who regularly take coaching sessions or have their equipment fitted correctly with their local PGA pro.

If you’ve never considered teeing up some coaching or having a professional equipment service, here’s five reasons why it is worth taking on the advice of highly-trained professionals and making 2018 the year you took your golf game to another level. 1. It can be a hugely rewarding and enjoyable experience (some might even say fun). Having an expert PGA professional exclusively working on your game is a real buzz particularly when you work together to establish goals for your game. That could be simply getting round the course more successfully or a more ambitious aim of reaching the single figure handicap target you’ve desired for years. 2. Golf is rewarding for those who like to challenge themselves and having your equipment professional set you up

helps you to realise your potential which includes being able to hit the ball further, straighter and more consistently with the net result of enjoying your golf a lot more. 3. In the digital age and with a plethora of golf instruction articles in magazines or on the internet, it’s easy to get an overload of information. Fortunately, PGA professionals have the knowledge to tell you what’s best for you rather than being influenced by some random tip you’ve seen in the latest magazine or website. 4. Strategy. If most club golfers had a PGA pro on their bag for their weekly round they would shave off at least three or four shots through better course management. As the saying goes there’s more than one way to skin a cat and PGA pros

are adept at helping their pupils score better. 5. A PGA professional is for life. A coaching session or equipment set up needn’t be just a one off — hence the PGA’s preference for the term coaching rather than having a lesson. Most of us will play golf for many years so having a PGA professional that gets to know your game over the years is priceless. We play golf for fun and PGA professionals have dedicated their life to working with and for our great game to assist you in getting that little bit more satisfaction out of your game. Always look for the blue PGA of NZ logo that symbolises expertise in the business and game of golf.

Self awareness

By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional

O

ne of the areas that professional golfers do very well is that they are very self aware of their strengths and weaknesses. They understand and control their emotions when they play making them very level headed in a round of golf. This is why you don’t see them doing flips when they make a birdie or eagle. You do see a bit of frustration from time to time when things go wrong but generally they keep themselves under control. So as club members with all sorts of handicaps is being self aware helpful to your game? I think it would help and could take shots of your game. I will cover a few situations where it may well help you.

ANGER/FRUSTRATION

We all get angry with ourselves from time to time. It may be internal where inside you are burning up or sadly sometimes external where people explode with expletives and sometimes create a few helicopters with their clubs. People struggle to cope with this frustration

and often you see this with young golfers (sometimes adults as well) that don’t have the maturity or ability to funnel this well. People get into a state where normal rational thought is lost. Reality and perspective disappears as the focus turns into something none of us like to be around. If you are self aware of triggers for such behaviour (no matter how big or small) then you can learn to cope with such instances. One mind fade can destroy a game and worse, can upset a game for others.

EXCITEMENT/ADRENALINE

What is wrong with excitement and the adrenaline that this brings? You make a birdie on the first hole, then follow this up with two pars and are playing so far under your handicap that your mind wonders. You start thinking ahead to the trophy you may win or that you may have your best score ever. BOOM, double, double and all hope is lost (for a few

holes anyway). This is why you don’t see professionals doing cartwheels when they make an eagle. They are self aware of their emotions and they know if they stick to their process the good round may continue. If they get to pumped up then adrenaline can create decreased feel and even tension. Look at Dustin Johnson for example. He always seems so laid back and is likely one reason why he is able to do what he does.

CHALLENGE/EGO

You hit your drive down a tree line. You find your ball and you think you have a shot that needs to get through a gap so you can get on the green. Its not a big gap but you think you can do it. You hit the shot and WHACK. In the tree and drops at the bottom. You need to then chip out and make double bogey. This happens a lot as we let our ego or the challenge get the better of us. Its that 50/50 call that when comes off you feel like a hero, but when it doesn’t it means

zero. I don’t play much these days but I make this mistake likely once a rounds at least. It hurts the ego and often can lead to frustration or some will say they got unlucky. The truth is they played a shot that had a high chance of failure. Being self aware of your abilities as a golfer is so important.

LUCK

I was always taught and teach this now. You make your own luck on the golf course. Most of the time when you hit the trees you will end up with a shot but sometimes you wont. You cant blame luck as it was a bad shot. You should have hit a different club to avoid the chance of such a situation. Be self aware of your course management and save shots. I think the first stage in improving self awareness is to work out habits. When things go wrong what are the general causes and create ways to realise you are falling into these habits. A coach will help you out with this or create your own strategy. Other people don’t have to know your process but work to keep it together on the course. Give it a try and look forward to having more enjoyment on the course.

Recognition: Powakaddy announced as #1 electric trolley brand in 2017

he world’s No.1 electric trolley brand, PowaKaddy, has been confirmed again as market-leader in the UK electric trolley sector. According to Golf DataTech*, the golf industry research specialists, PowaKaddy outsold all other electric trolley manufacturers put together by units and by value in 2017. “We’ve had another excellent year and its testament to the work of everyone connected with the brand,” said David Catford, PowaKaddy’s CEO. “Our UK sales grew by 40% year-on-year thanks to retailers making the most of our exciting new product launches and the ongoing impact of the switch to Lithium.” Headlining the pioneering brand’s successful 2017 was the introduction of the Compact C2, which proved the most successful electric trolley launch in the UK market for over four years. “We’d like to thank every single one of our customers who have played a cru-

cial role in promoting PowaKaddy and helping to take the brand to the clear No.1 position in the market,” said David Catford. “Whilst we’re incredibly pleased with the past year, we’re equally proud of the high-profit margins our trade partners continue to enjoy. We look forward to working closely with our partners moving forward, and our new product range promises to offer even more fantastic opportunities to grow further in 2018 and beyond.” Golf DataTech’s year-end report also confirms that, in comparison to its nearest competitor, PowaKaddy delivered higher average retail prices and margins for its retailers, whilst offering significantly faster stock turn. Last year also saw PowaKaddy launch the world’s first electric trolley with integrated GPS. The FW7s GPS model introduced GPS technology built in to a super-intelligent digital screen, delivering

fast, accurate distances to the front, middle and back of the green at over 35,000 golf courses worldwide. This has proved so successful, that the company has now announced the launch of a Rental GPS trolley. Retailers interested in boosting their profits with PowaKaddy in 2018 should contact their Area Sales Manager now or call the brand direct on 01795 473555. GOLFING IN CENTRAL OTAGO

PaR nz Golfing Holidays has taken over management of the popular Mount Michael Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic to be held in Central Otago this April. Due to the popularity of the event this year event is SOLD OUT.

It will be the 10th anniversary of the five-course tournament, which typically attracts more than 400 men and women players. Many competitors arrive as teams representing over 150 clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia.

QUEENSTOWN GOLF CLUB QUEENSTOWN GOLF CLUB (KELVIN HEIGHTS) • Blue 6102m • White 5839m • Ladies 5141m • Red 4100m EVER seen a post-card of Queenstown? If so then it has probably been taken from the top of Skyline Gondola and has the Queenstown Golf Club in it! This picturesque golf club offers not only Stunning views of the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu but is an exciting and challenging golf experience. Located just 20 minutes from Queenstown, or 5 minutes by water taxi, this is one of New Zealand’s iconic golf clubs which is a ‘must play’ for all golfers visiting the region. The Course is surrounded by lake Wakatipu and cradled by stunning mountain ranges so every tee and green has a view which makes it hard to keep your head down! Signature hole’s take on a whole new level at the Queenstown golf club especially the 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 14th and 17th which could be signature holes on any course. With a proud and loyal membership, Queenstown golf club has a long history and welcomes visitors year-round. Equipped with 36 modern motorised carts, a PGA Professional, Pro shop, 7 day a week Café specialising in home-made faire and fully licenced Bar ensures all your golfing needs are met and exceeded. The signature hole and probably one of the more scenic photographs on a New Zealand golf course would be the par 4 5th that curves left around the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu to an elevated green. Driving line is key as an over aggressive line combined with a miss-timed drive will see you ending up in the drink,

WANAKA GOLF CLUB • Blue 5770m • White 5496m • Ladies 5058m A SHORT 50-minute scenic drive from Queenstown, the township of Wanaka is a stunning and tranquil holiday destination in the heart of the Queenstown Lakes region. Perched above the picturesque township is the lovely Wanaka golf club; the biggest club in Otago and Southland with over1000 members. Host to the NZ Mixed foursomes in 2016, the NZ Women’s Seniors in 2012 and Men’s in 2009, Wanaka Golf Club boasts a well maintained, charming and challenging layout, with great value for money. Measuring 5770m (blues) and 5496m (whites) the course isn’t long by modern standards, but careful course management and the ability to shape your shots is important if you want to score well. The small greens and natural contours of the land also present their own challenge, so playing safe to the middle of the greens is recommended. It’s also important to try and keep your eye on the ball, as the spectacular views across the town and lake to Mount Aspiring National Park are some of the best in New Zealand, and can certainly add an extra distraction to your game. The two nines are very different. The front-nine,

which was established in the 1930s, features an undulating layout with small greens nestled amongst the rolling terrain. The back nine, which was added across the road in 1967, is much longer and slightly flatter—but no less spectacular. The club has progressed significantly in the past decade with capital improvements and course upgrades, making it one of the most scenic and playable courses around. The club features all the usual facilities you’d expect from a quality golf club, including club and cart hire, fully-stocked pro shop, driving range and a café and bar. »» www.wanakagolf.co.nz »» Email: wanaka@golf.co.nz »» Phone: +64 3 443 7888

ALEXANDRA GOLF CLUB • Blue 6000m • White 5718m • Ladies 5179m ALEXANDRA lies in the beautiful Manuherikia valley at the confluence of the Manuherikia and Clutha rivers. Surrounded by the high mountain ranges of the Old Man, Dunstan and Hawkduns, and with the barren Knobby Range as its background, this is a special part of Central Otago featuring stunning scenery, great history as well as plenty of things to do for golfers and non golfers alike. The pines bordering the golf course along State Highway 8 were originally planted to contain the desert sands that prevailed in the area. Most find it hard to imagine that today’s stunning golf course could be created from such beginnings. The course features a flat but undulating desert type terrain with fully irrigated fairways from tee to green. Narrow fairways mean accuracy is of prime importance if you are to avoid the desert remnants in the rough and the many trees lining

the fairways. Of interest, and one reason why golfers find their round at Alexandra appears to go so quickly, is the lack of continuous holes of same par value! Only twice in the 18 holes do you play consecutive holes of equal par! With the high ranges viewable from most parts of the course golfers find this is a most scenic as well as challenging course. At just over an hour drive from Queenstown and Wanaka the golf course and this unique area are well worth a visit. Come and see what we mean, phone SubPar golf shop at 03 448 8374 or email SubPar@xtra.co.nz to book a tee time now. CROMWELL GOLF CLUB • Black 6462m • Blue 6234m • White 5844m • Yellow 5204m • Red 4468m THE Cromwell Golf Course is a sand based, links style course located further from the sea than any other in New Zealand. Its fairways follow the natural lie of the land and features a sandy, wasteland feel, rough with patches of marram grass and large undulating greens. The course has 5 tee locations ranging from beginner to championship providing a real challenge for all levels of golfer and was rated 34th (13th in South Island) in the 2017 Top Golf Courses of New Zealand list by respected international organisation “top100golfourses”. The Cromwell course hosts the New Zealand Open final qualifying event annually.

ALEXANDRA GOLF CLUB Course facilities include a full length driving range and large multi-tier putting and chipping green, on-site PGA Professional, fully stocked pro-shop along with electric cart, trundle, and club hire. Situated on the 45th parallel, the inland location and surrounding mountains creates a microclimate nearing semi-arid. With less than 400mm (<15 inches) of evenly spread rain and 2200 hours of sunshine per year, golf can be played comfortably year-round with dry underfoot conditions. In winter a crisp white frost usually ensures a brilliantly sunny day in which to enjoy a round of golf on a course maintained to a consistently high standard. The golf course is in the centre of the town, which in turn is surrounded by vine yards and orchards. This is the centre of the world renown Central Otago Pinot Noir producing locations

CROMWELL GOLF CLUB of Bannockburn, Bendigo and Lowburn so wine tasting opportunities are numerous. The town is also located adjacent to Lake Dunstan and the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers. »» www.cromwellgolf.co.nz »» Cromwell 9310, New Zealand »» Phone: 03 445 0165

ARROWTOWN GOLF CLUB • White 5495m • Ladies 5035m ARROWTOWN GOLF CLUB is the jewel in the crown literally as it sits below the Crown Range and runs alongside the famous Arrow river which over 100 years ago was once a hive of activity during the gold rush era. The course borders the outskirts of Arrowtown which is about 20km from the centre of Queenstown and offers

stunning views of some well known ski fields, the Remarkables and Coronet Peak. If you are lucky enough to play on this hidden gem then you’ll will no doubt be blown away by the unique layout of the course as the narrow rolling fairways weave their way through valleys and rocky pillars very much like Roxburgh golf club. In the summertime the Browntop grass in the long rough is left to seed, leaving a colour scheme that represents a truly natural setting and makes the course look like a postcard. In 2012 the course won the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendants Association (NZGCSA) Environment award which recognises New Zealand’s leading golf course in relation to their environmental management practices. The club under took the removal of wilding trees and broom, while re-establishing Matagouri amongst the schist rock outcrops. From a playability perspective, the course is

the shortest out of the top 5 but probably requires the most accuracy from tee to greens. Again like Wanaka, Roxburgh and North Otago, the greens are very small. However for any big hitters, there are a lot of risk and reward holes that can provide a lot of birdies but also double bogeys and beyond. One of the best holes is the 18th which requires a blind shot over a hill to a fairway that slopes to the left towards a pond. A good drive leaves only a wedge shot to the green and a good birdie opportunity however getting a good drive away is the key. Club hire is available and green fees are $50.00 for NZ Affiliated and $85.00 for Non Affiliated. »» www.arrowtowngolf.co.nz/ »» 166 Centennial Ave, Arrow Junction 9371 »» Phone: 03-442 1719

AMATEURS SHINE AT REBEL SPORT MASTERS

Two of Harbour Golf’s top young players were invited to play at the Rebel Sport Masters at Wainui GC, an event on the

ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia. Kit Bittle played well on his home course, opening with a respectable 76 on a tough day for many. But it was a week to remember for Kevin Koong. Not only did Kevin make the cut, he then produced one of the best rounds on the final day to finish in a tie for 44th place with over 50 professionals finishing further down the leaderboard. A great performance and an experience to remember for Kevin.

This will give Josh full status as one of the top 2 finishes. Guy Perry was making his first attempt at qualification to play golf professionally, and finished 3rd equal, with rounds of 72, 75 & 74. RESULTS OF 16TH ANNUAL BUSH CLASSIC PLAYED AT PAHIATUA AND EKETAHUNA 13TH/14TH JAN

A full field of 129 golfers played in the Bush Classic of 2018 – the 16th year of this acclaimed tournament. This year was the first year of sponsorship from the Trust House Enterprise and new management of the Post Office Hotel in Pahiatua. We appreciate the continued support of both the Trust House and Bruce and Sharon Willoughby. The Bush Classic featured a Saturday 18-hole round of golf in Pahiatua and the same on Sunday in Eketahuna. The clubs swap venues each year. The 36-hole stableford competition format has enjoyed much success over the years and 2018 was no exception, players representing some 31 clubs from Wellington, Manawatu-Wanganui, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and Waikato districts. The field is usually filled prior to Christmas, leaving many disappointed locals ruing their tardiness in entering. Winner of the Post Office Hotel Cup this year was Janice Duffy, a multiple winner of the trophy. OTAGO/SOUTHLAND LEGENDS RETURN FOR ANNUAL TOURNAMENT By Leigh-Anne Fox

The Cromwell Golf Club held its 22nd annual Legends golf tournament last weekend allowing the club to showcase

their course and facilities with favourable weather conditions adding to the excitement. A total of 220 players from throughout the country took part in the weekend competition which is the biggest tournament of the year for the Cromwell Golf Club. To take part in the Legends tournament, one player from each team has had to have represented their province or country in a sport. Sir Brian Lochore who represented New Zealand as an All Black attended the tournament as part of the 220 strong players on the course. “This particular tournament is seen as a chance to play as part of a team, and has a relaxed feel about it. It’s unique in that respect, and players love the chance to get together making the tournament popular,” comments Cromwell Golf Club tournament director, Willie Moore. The Cromwell Rowing Club took the opportunity to fundraise during the event selling food and running a “target green” competition, while volunteers led by club

president Wayne Dixon worked hard to ensure a smooth running two day tournament focussed on fun. “All the volunteers made a valuable contribution to last weekend’s event and we are thrilled to have the support of our sponsors on-board including our major sponsor Aubade” Shayne, Tony and Luke Harvey along with Stu King from Invercargill played a winning tournament and were announced as the 2018 tournament winners at a prize giving event held on Sunday afternoon. Cromwell golf club and course where on show over the weekend and the comments from players and supporters have been positive. Great weather meant everyone was able to enjoy the facilities and sunshine during their weekend stay. “Thank you to players, supporters, sponsors and volunteers for helping make the 2018 Legend’s tournament success” Willie adds.

Southern- Southland

Roxburgh Golf Course were as a result of the November flooding that they most generously supplied two vouchers for 2 players and a cart. They used one as a prize and the other as a raffle. All the winners were rapt. The golfers came from all over Otago and Southland, a few from Canterbury and even a pair from North Shore. Thanks to the generosity of the spon-

sors, everyone went home with a prize. The raffle winners too were thrilled with locally grown export quality cherries and blueberries.
