Olympic funding – it’s about need, not want
S
hould Lydia Ko have received funding to represent New Zealand at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil? That was a burning question until it was announced last month that New Zealand Golf and Ko had agreed to withdraw an application for funding from High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ). Up until then I had struggled with the question. My first question was did Lydia deserve it? The answer was most certainly. Part of the criteria HPSNZ needs to ask itself when deciding on the allocation of funding is, is the person or team a genuine medal hope? In the case of Lydia the answer is without doubt. Last month Lydia was already ranked the world’s No 3 and has clearly established herself as amongst the world’s best golfers. My second question was did Lydia need funding? The answer was probably not. In the first five months of this year Lydia’s earnings on the LPGA Tour stood at more than $US550,000. That’s $NZ630,000. When was the last time you earned $630,000
in the first five months of the year, let alone at the age of 17? And if there was an occasion, do you think you could afford to send yourself off to the Olympics? It’s not really a question, is it. To my way of thinking funding from HPSNZ should be for players that need it. And I mean need, not want. For example rugby sevens will be part of the 2016 Olympics. Presumably, All Blacks will be putting up their hands for the Olympics. Do All Blacks needing funding? Of course not. It has been suggested some sportspeople, who have received funding in the past, earn just as much, if not more, than Lydia. I would hope that is not the case. The good thing about golf is we know exactly how much they receive in prizemoney. It’s their in black and white, down to the last cent. We don’t know how much they receive in endorsements from sponsors or the like but the prizemoney they earn will be a barometer of it. Can we look up on the internet exactly how much Richie McCaw is paid? Not likely. The 2016 Olympics will be the first time in
more than a century that golf has been part of the programme. There will be a men’s and a women’s competition. Each will be a 72hole strokeplay event and each limited to 60 players. Qualification will be determined by world rankings the month beforehand. The top 15-ranked players will qualify, with a limit of four golfers per country. The remaining 45 positions will go to the highest-ranked players from countries that do not already have two golfers qualified. Perhaps the more burning question is how do you and I get some funds together to cheer on Lydia at Rio de Janeiro in August of 2016? I can already picture a group of us following Lydia around the golf course, waving a New Zealand flag. I am thinking of asking the boss of Golfer Pacific to put together a travel package of which I would be the tour leader (and therefore get to go for free). We could also, of course, ask for funding from High Performance Sport New Zealand.

Josh Munn prevails in playoff to NZ Amateur M
ost bets were on a rare double being completed when Auckland golfer Tae Koh was three up with 10 holes to play in the final of the New Zealand Amateur Championship. Koh had won the Australian Amateur Championship in Adelaide a few months earlier and was in line to become the first New Zealander to complete the Australia-New Zealand amateur double in the same year. Wining both tournaments in the same year had only been done once before and that was by Australian Matt Jager in 2010. But Koh’s chances of achieving the feat soon after took a tumble. His opponent Josh Munn, from Manawatu, eagled the 27th and birdied the 28th holes in the 36hole final at the Nelson Golf Club to reduce the lead to one. Then it was all square after the 31st and the match, played in cold and windy conditions, remained equal coming to the 36th. Both had chances to win the last. Koh flubbed his chip shot from behind the green into the bunker. He almost holed his bunker shot but he had handed the advantage

to Munn. The latter had a putt from nine feet to win but it slid by. In the first play-off hole Koh found trouble from the tee and missed a nine foot putt to end up
with a bogey. That left Munn a tap-in putt for par and victory. Munn said the win came down to self-belief. ``I just kept telling myself to be-
lieve I could do it,’’ he said. ``It was hard because Tae is probably the most solid player in New Zealand golf right now. I knew that he wasn’t going to give it to me. I had to take it off him and that is what I did.” Munn said the weather conditions made it difficult but he felt he coped well. ``It was playing so tough in the wind but I am used to those conditions and I felt like that really helped me.’’ He was particularly disappointed to miss his part putt on the 36th. ``My mind went blank on the putt I had in regulation to win. I have played so much golf in the last four or five days, I lost it there for a bit. But I came back well and to get it done on the next hole was pleasing.” Munn’s win follows in the footsteps of many of the legends of New Zealand golf, including the likes of Stu Jones, John Durry, Frank Nobilo, Phil Tataurangi and, in more recent times, Danny Lee. ``It is pretty overwhelming to put my name in the record books
alongside them. I am humbled really. I am really proud of what I have achieved in winning this and hopefully my career can follow what those guys have achieved.” Munn, 23, is a well-seasoned amateur. He has won twice on New Zealand’s Charles Tour and won the prized Lake Macquarie Amateur in Australia. But the New Zealand Amateur Championship topped them all. ``This is the trophy that I have always wanted to win. Ever since I was 13 years old I have talked about winning the New Zealand Amateur with my coach Andre [White] and to do it, is just unbelievable. It is without doubt the biggest win of my career.’’ Koh was naturally disappointed but satisfied he was not beaten easily. ``I always thought it would go all the way to the end and it did, all the way to the 37th hole,” Koh said. ``He (Munn) played great. I lost my mojo on the 9th, 10th and 11th holes and he capitalised in that period. I came back pretty well in the final few holes but a few loose shots cost me my chance to win.”

Chantelle Cassidy runs away with final of NZ Amateur
T
he emotions came flooding back for Chantelle Cassidy when her birdie putt dropped on the 13th hole to provide her with victory in the New Zealand Amateur Championship. The successful putt provided Cassidy with an emphatic 7 and 6 victory over Kate Chadwick from Napier but Cassidy’s immediate thoughts went back to the same tournament a year earlier. Cassidy’s great grandfather died in the week of the previous year’s New Zealand Amateur and she dedicated this year’s win at the Nelson Golf Club to him. ``It means so much to do it for my great grandpa,” said Cassidy, 21, from the Cambridge Golf Club in Waikato. ``He has been on my mind all week and I am so happy to have won this tournament. Last year this event was really emotional for me so it is nice to change that feeling today.” Cassidy saved her best for the last round of the 36-hole final and was proud of her win. ``I played really good today. I always knew that Kate could come back, because she is a

great player. ``But I did enough all day and to finish it off with a birdie was a great moment. I can’t believe it really.” Cassidy, a former New Zealand representative, became the fourth from Waikato to win the event and the first from the Cambridge Golf Club for 90 years. The previous winners from Waikato were Mrs J W Peake (Cambridge) in 1924, Miss Gina Scott (Kawhia) in 1995 and Mrs J Oliver (Waiterimu) in 1997. ``This win is also for all the people who have supported me in the Waikato and at the Cambridge Golf Club. I look forward to getting back to the club this week with the trophy.” The win was another national title for Cassidy. She had also won New Zealand Strokeplay Championship in 2013. Her win at Nelson was set up by her opening 18 holes. She made four birdies on the outward nine to quickly jump to a four up lead. She then added another birdie on the 12th to be five-under par and five up in what was the defining stretch of the 36-hole final.
There were moments where Chadwick fought back in the match – like the birdies she made on the 14th and 27th to get back to five down – but Cassidy was always in control. Chadwick, a full-time nurse, kept dreaming of an improbable comeback on the closing stretch but the task was too tall. But the 22-year-old, who is a three-time New Zealand Maori champion, was pleased with her performance. ``It was a great achievement for me to make the final. I am really proud of how I played here this week and I go home happy,” she said. On her way to the final, Cassidy defeated Robin White (7 and 5), Laura Hoskin (1 up), Munchin Keh (2 and 1) and Celyn Khoo (1 up). ``I played great all week and I think the key to my performance was never giving up. There are a lot of moments in the week where you are tested and I think I showed a lot of character. ``I hope that this performance helps me to represent New Zealand again.”

Fox kicks goal in Muriwai Open N ot even a lost ball on the last hole was enough to deny Auckland professional Ryan Fox his first win on New Zealand’s Charles Tour. Fox whacked his tee shot on the 18th in the Muriwai Open, sponsored by Ask>Metro, way right and even though about 50 onlookers helped search for the ball it could not be found. The 27-year-old returned to the tee at the Muriwai course in west Auckland and ended up with a double bogey but still won by three strokes. Asked afterwards what he was thinking on the 18th tee, Fox replied: ``Don’t go left, basically. I thought that was the only way I could get into serious trouble. ``When I hit it, I thought it was fine but there is obviously more trouble out there than I thought. It would have been more stressful if I hadn’t hit my second one good but once I got that one down the middle I felt pretty comfortable.” It was somewhat of an anticlimax but the fact that Fox could doublebogey the last and still win by three shots was testament to the dominance he showed in the $40,000

tournament over four rounds. Fox also won 26 dozen of Asahi beer after he tied for the low round of the tournament with Bay of Plenty amateur Hayden Beard. They both had scores of 64 on the par 72 layout. Fox, with a smile, added: ``I have had plenty of calls and texts since shooting the 64 of people telling me they will give me a hand to drink that 26 dozen beer. It is going to be good to get into that with the boys.” The Charles Tour comprises five tournaments but victory had eluded Fox, 27, until the Muriwai Open. ``It has been a long time coming but it is worth the wait,” said Fox, who enjoyed his first win alongside his father, All Black great Grant Fox who caddied for him in all four rounds. ``I have had a lot of great results in big tournaments with him but never quite got one across the line. We had a lot of fun out here this week.” Fox ended the tournament with a 20-under par total which was two shots shy of the tournament low record on the Charles Tour that his good friend Fraser Wilkin recorded last year to win the Taranaki Open.
Fox’s father was proud of what Ryan achieved after a week of solid golf in the benign conditions. ``He has played really well,’’ Grant Fox said. ``He hit it well off the tee, hit a lot of greens. The score was out there and he didn’t make many mistakes all week.” Grant Fox said he was aware as anyone of how hard professional sport can be for a living. ``He is chasing a big dream like many of them are who have chosen to do this for a living. It is a tough gig that they have chosen. ``He has worked hard to get to where he has got and he has got a long way to get to where he wants to be. But you have got to feel what it is like to win and to finally do that in a Charles Tour event is pleasing.” Fox has now won five titles as a professional. The previous four are the Martinborough Pro-am, the Fiji Open (twice) and the Jeep Pro-Am in Queensland. Said Ryan Fox: ``Winning at any level is good. You can’t go out and expect to win a major or a PGA Tour event without winning along the way. To be in the lead for two days and to keep playing

the way that I did was really pleasing.” Second in the Muriwai Open was Bay of Plenty professional Kieran Muir for his best fin-
ish on the Charles Tour while Auckland pro Richard Lee was third. Muriwai local Tadgh Campbell was the leading amateur.

Munchin Keh’s second win in Muriwai Open A
uckland golfer Munchin Keh defended a winning title for the second this year when she ran away with the Muriwai Open in Auckland. Keh, 21, went into the final round of the Ask>Metro sponsored event with a three shot lead and ended up winning by five after scoring a three-under 69 on the last day. The Titirangi Golf Club member had won the same event the previous year and it followed her winning defence of the North Island Strokeplay a fortnight beforehand. Keh, who has the Espirito Santo world teams’ event in Japan in September at the top of her list, was proud of her performance at Muriwai. ``I was very consistent here all week and to win by five is a great achievement,” Keh said. ``It is always a huge thing to win on the Charles Tour, I feel really honoured.” Keh, who carded rounds of 70, 69, 70 and 69 for a 10-under par total, said the key to her consistency was her short game. ``Knowing how to play these greens was important. I chipped well and I putted well as well. That helped me shoot a good score. “I didn’t really focus on the expectations. I just came here with a mindset that I wasn’t defending my title. I just wanted to play well and enjoy my golf and that mentality really helped. I wasn’t worried about the outcome.” Keh said it was a good test playing with North Harbour professional Cathryn Bristow who would be returning to the Ladies’ European Tour (LET). ``It makes it even more satisfactory to beat someone like Cathryn. To know that she is going to play on the LET gives me a huge amount of confidence that I have been able to beat someone that good. It is a good indication of where I am at with my game.” Bristow, who finished second at Muriwai, enjoyed the experience of competing on the Charles Tour for the first time. ``You can practice all you like but it is

never the same as being in a tournament, so this has been great for me,’’ Bristow said. ``I take a lot of positives from this week as I look forward to carrying it on in Europe. Keh is also looking forward. She is planning on going to Asia with fellow New Zealand representative Julianne Alvarez, who finished third at Muriwai, to prepare for the Espirito Santo. ``It is all about getting ready for the worlds and the conditions we will play in. It will be important for us to be better prepared for the grainy grasses and the conditions that we have to play in, in Japan.”

Tae Koh new addition to national academy A
uckland golfer Tae Koh’s impressive form this year has been recognised with selectors at New Zealand Golf adding him to a revised national academy. Koh, who won the Australian Amateur in January, has been included in a new tier one level of the academy. He joins regular New Zealand representatives Joshua Munn, Vaughan McCall, Luke Toomey and Blair Riordan. In tier two, former NZ Amateur winner Kadin Neho is joined by the promising Waikato pair of Denzel Ieremia and Nick Coxon and Tasman’s Ryan Chisnall. Meanwhile in the women’s academy, Wellington’s Julianne Alvarez and Auckland No 1 Munchin Keh have been re-affirmed as the elite players in tier one. The tier two players include New Zealand Amateur winner Chantelle Cassidy, Auckland No 2 Wenyung Keh and former NZ Amateur finalist Hanna Seifert. New Zealand Golf has adjusted the structure of its player development programme to have one national academy, made up of two tiers, to replace the previous separate national academy and the national development squad. New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe said: ``The reason for this is to focus attention, time and funding on a smaller group of players at the elite and pre-elite level, while broadening our approach to the development of emerging junior aged players. ``The focus for the emerging junior players will be to provide more international playing opportunities alongside the running of national training camps.” The tier one players are golfers who have been consistent reps for New Zealand and are among the frontrunners for national selection, principally with the World Amateur Team’s Championship to be staged in Japan in September in mind. ``Our tier one players are all golfers who have performed nationally and internationally and we are excited to see them continue their development as the leading players in the national academy,” said Thorpe. He added the selection of Koh, who has been a standout performer in recent times, made sense. ``Tae narrowly missed selection in the national academy last year and since then

it has been great to see him take his game to a higher level. I was fortunate to be there in Adelaide [when he won the Australian Amateur] and I was really impressed by his composure on such a big stage. We look forward to supporting his ongoing success in the national academy.” When Koh won the Australian Amateur, he became just the third Kiwi to win the event. The 19-year-old from the Manukau Golf Club followed it up with runner-up finishes at the New Zealand Strokeplay, North Island Strokeplay and the New Zealand Amateur. The other tier one players have all shown their quality over time. Munn won the NZ Amateur, Riordan was the North Island Strokeplay champion, Toomey the NZ Strokeplay winner and McCall has a solid international record behind him which includes qualifying for the US Amateur Championship. In the women’s academy, Munchin Keh and Alvarez have been the stand-out performers for the past two years. Keh has now won four times on the Charles Tour to go this year with her runner-up finish at the New Zealand Strokeplay and her victory at the North Island Strokeplay. Alvarez last year won the NZ Amateur, the NZ under-19s and the Harewood Open titles last year in her breakthrough season.

five available options for fairway woods and an additional four Rescue lofts. After the introduction of SLDR, PGA Tour Professionals began lofting up their drivers at an unprecedented rate. On average players who use SLDR have gone up a full degree or more in loft, and in many cases PGA Tour Professionals have gone as high as 12°. In fact, at the 2014 RBC Heritage there were 14 drivers with 12° of loft or more in play. “Historically on the PGA Tour, guys would de-loft their drivers in an attempt to achieve a lower ball flight and gain distance,” said Keith Sbarbaro, TaylorMade Golf’s Vice President of Tour Operations. “But when we introduced low forward CG, players started to see huge distance leaps from added loft. This has been a monumental shift in the way of thinking and a breakthrough in unlocking more distance. With SLDR S, the same dominating distance is available to golfers of all abilities and swing speeds.”

ince its debut in August of last year, SLDR has been the No. 1 driver on Tour. Today, TaylorMade Golf Company announces SLDR S – the next iteration of the successful metalwood franchise – engineered to provide distance for golfers of all abilities and swing speeds through high-lofted metalwoods. The SLDR S line features TaylorMade’s renowned low forward centre of gravity (CG) placement – a recent TaylorMade engineering feat wherein weight is re-located to the front of the head to promote faster ball speed, a higher launch angle and a lower spinrate. TaylorMade discovered that adding loft to drivers engineered with low forward CG characteristics results in astounding leaps in distance. “It’s no secret that high launch and low spin maximise driver distance, but some players think that only Tour pros can benefit from lofting up with low forward CG,” said TaylorMade Chief Technical Officer, Benoit Vincent. “This is simply not true. By lofting up, you can generate serious distance regardless of swing speed with SLDR S, which has low and forward CG properties, along with a sliding weight that assists shot shape.” The well-documented benefits of lofting up inspired TaylorMade Golf to release high-lofted SLDR S drivers – they will be available in 10°, 12°, 14° and 16°. ACHIEVEMENT
Millbrook Resort named a ‘Stellar Stay’ T
he world’s leading hotel price comparison website, HotelsCombined, has named Queenstown’s Millbrook Resort one of the best properties in Australia and New Zealand in its second annual ‘Stellar Stays’ awards. The award judges singled out just 13 outstanding properties across Australia and New Zealand based on a stringent set of criteria specifically around the large number of exceptional guest reviews received across many travel sites. The winning properties’ environmental, sustainable tourism and community initiatives were also a key aspect and each property had to have won at least three major other awards in the last 12 months to be considered. HotelsCombined global PR and content manager Alycia Simons said the strict award criteria “ensures the calibre of the winning properties remains very high”. “Responsible tourism is very important to HotelsCombined and the ‘Stellar Stays’ Awards aim to encourage and highlight the benefits of sustainable tourism practices,” said Ms Simons. “Each of the awarded hotels has contributed significantly to the local community or environment in some way. This may be through the implementation of international best practice standards and procedures or via an ongoing commitment to community programs and initiatives.” The reviews on HotelsCombined are aggregated from over 38 million reviews from multiple travel and review sites with

a potential maximum score of 10. All winners rated 9.0 or higher and had a minimum of 250 customer reviews on the HotelsCombined site. The award adds to the five star resort’s already impressive trophy cabinet and continues a formidable run of positive feedback, guest reviews and fantastic coverage as co-host of the New Zealand Golf Open for the first time earlier this year. Within the last 12 months alone Millbrook Resort has been voted the Best Golf Resort in Australasia at the World Travel Awards for the third year running, Best Luxury Wellness Spa for Australasia & Oceania in the World Luxury Hotel Awards
2013, and No 1 Hotel in New Zealand Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Awards in 2013 and 2014. Millbrook Resort head of operations Brian Howie said the latest award was unique as it centred on multiple factors that contribute to the success of a world-class hotel. “This accolade is based not only on the incredible guest reviews we’ve received across multiple websites and our previous award wins, but it also recognises the importance of operating a five-star resort in an environmentally-responsible manner while also maintaining world-class standards,” he said. “Sustainability and protecting our en-
vironment for future generations is of the utmost importance to us and we’ve undergone some noticeable alterations in our processes to ensure we not only meet but exceed our commitments to the environment.” “As a five- star Qualmark and Enviro Gold rated property we endeavour to ensure our guests enjoy a world-class experience while also doing our bit for the environment.” One area of interest is Millbrook Resort’s pioneering use of EM Technology (EM™) to help reduce waste across the resort. “We’re leading the way in this area, ensuring the resort is as environmentallyfriendly as it can be. With over 500 acres to tend to, including established grounds and wetlands which are home to an abundance of wildlife, our task isn’t small.” EM™ (Effective Microorganisms) is a natural and probiotic technology developed 28 years ago that is made up of beneficial and highly efficient organisms, which are not harmful, non-pathogenic, and not genetically modified or chemically synthesized. “The win adds to our already impressive array of awards, accolades and consistently good guest feedback we receive daily. It’s an encouraging nod to the hard work of the team who go above and beyond to ensure guests who visit Millbrook leave feeling relaxed and truly wowed by our stunning environment.” “Our world-class standards are unrivalled and awards such as this reflect that.”

Learning from the success of other golf clubs N ew Zealand Golf has recently launched an initiative that presents case studies from successful golf clubs around the country. It has been great to see many golf club managers take to this opportunity with real enthusiasm. There is no doubt that many golf clubs around New Zealand are struggling to recruit new members, retain current members and meet their financial demands. In many parts it is tough going. But there are also a lot of good things happening in our game, so it is great to be able to share these successes. Most recently we launched the second group of case studies which included Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club (club amalgamation), Mangawhai Golf Club (outside of golf influence) and Nelson Golf Club (member recruitment). The case studies are designed to celebrate innovate thinking and success in clubs and communities around New Zealand and these three stories are case in point. We hope that these case studies are useful for clubs around the country who are looking to address common issues or opportunities. Steve Hinton (Mangawhai) and Harry Hall (Nelson) showed great initiative in promoting and building their club membership. I’d like to applaud John Freer and the key people who made the Boulcott’s Farm Heritage GC amalgamation happen. The case study on its amalgamation is very relevant to many clubs across the country that may be in a similar situation. Freer outlined the long and involved process, in a step by step explanation, which is a blueprint for effective amalgamation. Sport
NZ has recognised the success of this process and there are key lessons that clubs, communities and regional sports trusts can learn from this effective practice and relevant findings. Freer said it was an easy decision to get involved. He believes that golf clubs cannot continue with the same model of struggling day to day, year to year. ``The Boulcott’s Farm project is one way that change can be implemented with outstanding results. By undertaking this case study we hope other clubs and administrators will learn from it and hopefully be stimulated to give something similar a crack,” he said. There are so many good things happening around New Zealand and it is great to facilitate the reporting of these. I encourage all golf club managers and club boards to get involved. We can all make a difference together. We look forward to the end of the year and reflecting on the 20 or more great success stories from golf clubs around New Zealand. Case studies released to date are: 1. Female Environment: Innovative ways of creating a female friendly environment – Manawatu Golf Club 2. Membership Recruitment: Innovative approaches to attracting new members – Akarana Golf Club 3. Membership Recruitment: Innovative ways of creating a great junior environment – Pupuke Golf Club 4. Amalgamation: Innovative ways of retaining histo-
ry whilst securing the future – Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club. 5. Outside of Golf: Innovative ways of creating revenue outside the traditional golf club operation – Mangawhai Golf Club. 6. Membership Recruitment and Retention: Innovative ways of recruiting and retaining members – Nelson Golf Club. For more information visit: http://www. golf.co.nz/About/ClubManual.aspx

Responsibility comes with golf club governance I was talking to a Professional Golfers’ Association member recently who was telling me how the board of his golf club had changed with the addition of two new members. He didn’t appear pleased and as I asked more, I discovered that the two new members wanted to shake up the golf club and change a number of things. The new board members didn’t think the golf club was running as well as it should. Their goal was to make sure membership grew and the club’s finances improved. I asked the same pro golfer, who has been at his club for quite a few years, if these two new board members had spoken to him about the club? Had they asked him questions on how the golf club could improve? Were they out seeking information from the membership? Did they have any committee experience and had they spent time learning about the club’s structure? The answer was to all of these questions was no. Both of the new board members were decent golfers and understood the game. They also possessed some good business experience outside of golf. So this got me thinking about why people stand for the board or a committee at a golf club. To me it comes down to three key reasons: they love the game/club and want to contribute, it is something they are interested in and want a new challenge or they have a desire to make changes to the club to improve it in the manner in which they believe it should be run. As an elected member on the Dunedin City Council I now have a new appreciation for governance. This role
has taught me to spend time understanding all issues of the decision making process and the implications it has in people’s lives. It is quite an effort to learn what is happening at city council level, what the key issues are and what the council accounting books show us. I talk to many people directly involved in issues (key stakeholders) as well as those peripheral to the council and the issues. Yet, in the golf clubs I’ve worked at, I have seen few committee or board members do any due diligence on the roles they are seeking. If they don’t take time to do the research, then how do they know in which areas they need to see improvement? Once elected it is a case of understanding what is going on at the club and exactly what the role of govern-
All good golf clubs need good people but they need people that are willing to assist and improve the club itself, not just achieve their personal goals. ...
ance entails. What is the strategic plan of the club, if it has one, and what are goals and objectives? Realistically, can these be achieved? Does the club have organisational performance monitors or markers to see how the club is performing? What are the thoughts and feelings of the membership? Is the club itself fiscally ``healthy”? And finally, what is the leadership skill-set of the board and will it ensure that the club is governed responsibly with the best interests of all members, not just specific individuals’ needs, at the core of decision-making? I urge anyone that is interested in taking up office at a golf club to spend time learning the business and finding out what is working and what isn’t. Talk broadly to your membership (not just vocal individuals), talk to other golf clubs and other local sports clubs in the area to see what the marketplace is like. But most importantly, spend time talking to the staff that are on-site at the golf course every day and specifically that includes your PGA golf professional. Establish a strategic plan, determine some key organisation goals and objectives, ensure you have reliable and realistic performance markers and then lead. All good golf clubs need good people but they need people that are willing to assist and improve the club itself, not just achieve their personal goals. You may not be the best golfer, the most accomplished business person or have leadership/management experience. However, as long as you are prepared to listen, learn and absorb all aspects of what is going on and work with the leadership team, you will be successful.

Charles Tour poised to go to the next level T
he recent Charles Tour events at Akarana and Muriwai in Auckland have reinforced the critical nature of these tournaments on the calenders of the New Zealand professional and elite amateurs. It was very much a tale of two golf courses, as inner city Akarana suffered weather more generally associated with Muriwai in May, while the latter was at its benign best over tournament week. Although Akarana was reduced to 54 holes as a result, in both cases the cream rose to the top, with Josh Geary (Akarana) and Ryan Fox (Muriwai) recording well deserved victories. Fox went on to record a top-10 finish (and earned $US20,000) in OneAsia’s Maekyung Open, thus following in the footsteps of Michael Hendry by using the Muriwai Open as a springboard to bigger and brighter things. The Charles Tour has been around since 2008, but the only venue which has featured in every year is Tauranga, which will stage its seventh Carrus Open in September. Until 2010 the Charles Tour was based on four venues - Tauranga, Wairakei, New Plymouth and Christchurch (Shirley). That year Muriwai came in as the fifth tournament and the tour looked poised to build from there as a circuit in its own right, with talk of up to eight events and a season ending Charles Tour Championship. However, nothing is straightforward in golf and since then earthquakes, sponsorship changes and mother nature have intervened at various points to see the Tour still stranded on five events, only one of which (Tauranga) is an original venue. Prize money has also been
stuck in the groove at $40,000 since 2008. The good news is that three new clubs (Manawatu, Harewood and Akarana) have come on board in the last three years, which has not only refreshed the circuit with different challenges for the players, but also with new ideas and new support for the tour. Hosting a Charles Tour event does involve some inconvenience and cost to the clubs concerned in course preparation, loss of access for members during the tournament week, and the work involved in lining up sponsors. But it also brings benefits: exposure and publicity for the club, potential new commercial partners and members, the opportunity for members to get involved and close to the action, and the chance to showcase the course at its best. That latter point was particularly evident at Muriwai, where course presentation has been steadily improved over the five years of the Muriwai Open to the outstanding condition it was this year, with every hole a birdie chance or a source of disaster depending on the competitor’s skill. Together with some exciting course developments planned, that must strengthen Muriwai’s appeal to corporates, members and green fee players alike. So what of the future? Although it’s basically impossible to make a decent living playing golf full time on the local circuit, more prize money would help our better players to cover the high costs of competing overseas, as
well as potentially attracting more Australian players here to build public interest and provide additional value for sponsors. It’s good to hear that some venues are planning bigger purses in 2015, and with the probability of Charles Tour events at Manawatu, New Plymouth, Akarana and Muriwai, plus the NZ PGA Championship and the NZ Open all taking place in close proximity in the first part of the year, there’s an excellent opportunity to put together a very attractive schedule, and to take the Charles Tour to the next level. That will be of huge benefit to our emerging young professionals and elite amateurs, as they seek to follow in the footsteps of Geary, Hendry, Brad Shilton, Mark Brown and Gareth Paddison – all Charles Tour winners with victories on other tours. And let’s not forget another golfer who used the Charles Tour to build the foundation of a career that is likely to top them all – Lydia Ko.

WHAT’S NEW
Adidas Golf introduces innovative climachill apparel
A
didas Golf, an industry leader in innovation, technology and performance footwear and apparel, has announced the release of the new climachill apparel collection, featuring new and exclusive fabric technologies designed to keep golfers cool when temperatures rise on the course. Designed and developed to raise performance levels by helping regulate body temperatures, adidas Golf engineers have revolutionized golf apparel technology with proprietary climachill fabric, engineering the most breathable material the company has ever incorporated into its apparel lines. Delivering a cooling sensation upon contact with the skin, small aluminum dots were strategically located inside the back neck, one of the warmest areas on the human body. The climachill fabric construction utilizes woven titanium fibers that maximize surface contact with skin. Remarkably light, climachill fabric acts like an open mesh to increase air permeability, drawing heat away from the body and allowing for unmatched ventilation and evaporation of sweat to keep golfers cool like never before. Climachill apparel first appeared on the PGA TOUR at The Players Championship earlier this month, and the technology will
be featured prominently in the scripting of Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day throughout the remainder of the 2014 PGA TOUR season. “When the temperatures rise, I need apparel that will keep me cool, comfortable and focused on my play,” said Jason Day, 2014 WGC-Accenture Match Play Champion. “I’m amazed by the technology adidas Golf has incorporated into their apparel, and with climachill, not only can I see the technology, I can feel it, too.” “We’re consistently looking to develop the most innovative products to keep athletes comfortable so they can focus on performance,” said Davide Mattucci, Director, Global Apparel Product Marketing for adidas Golf. “The climachill fabric is, by far, our most advanced to date and the benefits are actually developed at the microscopic level. It looks and feels like a solid performance fabric, but breathes like an open-air mesh. Once someone feels it, the difference is undeniable.” The climachill apparel collection includes five men’s polos and three women’s polos with an MSRP ranging from $75$80 USD. Available now, visit www.adidas. co.nz/golf to learn more about climachill technology and to view the entire apparel collection.

GOLF TRAVEL
Ramblings from the 2014 US Masters Tour night at the Hotel Aiken with the rowdy crowd singing “Khe Sanh” in unison was a top way to wrap up an amazing day.
Seeing the Masters live at Augusta remains a bucket-list dream for just about every golfer. Go Golfing’s annual tour to the Masters makes this dream a reality and Tour Manager Tracey-Lea Tiley shares her first Masters tour.
The Final Day
O
ur welcome dinner at Pinehurst allowed us to get to know each other in a relaxed environment via a calcutta to decide Masters winners, and a thoroughly entertaining fireside chat with player agent, Tony Bouffler who shared what it’s like to live life ‘inside the ropes’. After 3 days of golf at Pinehurst, we were on the way to the Masters! This was the day the group had been waiting for – to set foot on this sacred turf. I have to admit I was just as wide-eyed as my guests!!! First stop, the practice tee. A large grandstand is positioned behind the tee, everyone has great views and the timing of my arrival was superb. Adam Scott had just made his way to the range and was welcomed by the huge roar. Jimenez was also warming up, complete with stogie cigar and flowing ponytail. Among the usually conservative golfing community he is a breath of if not quite fresh, then freshly lit air! It’s a congenial atmosphere that has complete strangers strike up a conversation – everyone loves an Aussie here! On the 1st Tee, I had the pleasure of watching Matt Jones, Mike Weir (who later nailed a hole-in-one), and The Walrus
16 GOLFER PACIFIC June 2014
Left, Phil Mickelson and kids. Right, Pinehurst. Photos: Tracey-Lea Tiley (Craig Stadler). What you don’t see on TV when you’re on the 1st hole is the undulation. I was surprised by just how hilly the layout is and my hind quarters felt it the next day! After the fried food of the ‘deep south’ I needed a good walk and what a place to do it! Having watched Bernard Langer (so incredibly stylish for a gentleman of a certain age!) and Vijay on the 10th it was time to walk the walk. So off to the 15th/16th/17th, a great spot to watch the players in a more relaxed atmosphere, skipping balls across the lake. Par 3 Tournament at The Masters is such a special day. Whilst the layout is typical Augusta -challenging with dramatic changes in elevations, framed by pine trees and azaleas, it is undeniably a different feel to the business end of the Masters Course. Watching the players interact with
their families is an absolute highlight – seeing tomorrows legends with mini putters proudly striding down the fairways with their famed dads/husbands/grandfathers is great fun (cue Jason Day’s little boy – what a swing, one handed!). Perhaps the largest roars and cheers came for three of the games elder statesmen; seeing Arnie (Palmer) and watching the effortless play of the Golden Bear and Gary Player, you appreciate just how great they still are. And they gave plenty of love back to the spectators – they sure know how to work a crowd! By this stage our charming southern village of Aiken and base during the tournament was starting to rev up and Wednesday night was karaoke night. There were some brilliantly talented vocalists on tour and within our local operations team (myself excluded). Great fun and a memorable
Dawn had risen on the final day at The Masters and many of our group had varying strategies to land themselves the best view. For some it was a start at the crack of dawn and a scramble to the 18th green to place their chair down. Others decided to sit at the 16th or Amen Corner and spend the morning following their favourite players. I walked the course proudly following leading (Australian) amateur, Oliver Goss for the first nine holes. What a talent and such a cool and composed young man. Freddy Couples ‘All American Guy’, clearly the coolest man on the course, was welcomed at every tee and green with hearty cheers and a standing ovation. We watched Bubba launch a massive drive down the 10th – it’s crazy how far he drives a ball! My own Masters strategy was to make my way with a couple of hours to play to the 18th and get a spot before the crowds descended. Worked brilliantly! I was inline with the pin, 3rd row back with a perfect view of the hole and green. From Scotty through to Bubba’s last putt – this was better than I had ever hoped or dreamed! >> For more information about the Go Golfing US Masters Tour for 2015, Tracey Lea would be happy to talk with you on +61 7 5536 3280. tential to change the way people perceive golf,” Jan Rowsell, the Marketing Manager of New Zealand Golf, said. Rowsell believes the key to the LOVE Golf campaign will be its longevity. “To have an impact of the casual player in New Zealand the LOVE Golf campaign will be on going and have a long term focus of building golf club membership and making the game we all love sustainable for the future.” The LOVE Golf website has been created and is designed to be light-hearted, fun and
welcoming and to show people just how affordable and accessible being a member of a golf club is. “It highlights how affordable golf can be if you break membership down to a weekly fee, as gym membership does,” said Rowsell. “The website … also show(s) the public how many different types of membership offerings are available at each club, giving the likes of those with busy schedules and young children the chance to look at memberships that are more tailored to their
lifestyle.” The LOVE Golf website makes getting into golf a simple process with a search tool for people to search for memberships and offers. As part of Golfer Pacific NZ’s support of the LOVE Golf campaign, we are bringing you eight great membership offers from some of our favourite clubs. Two of the Hutt Valley’s major leisure facilities have collaborated to bring out-of-town golfers an attractive Stay & Play package. Manor Park Golf Sanctuary is somewhat unique as it is a golf and wildlife park and the Club holds an internationally recognised sanctuary environmental certification from Audubon International. It has an 18-hole championship par 71 golf course set in beautiful native bush and wetlands with gently rolling fairways bordered by the Hutt River and is home to 20 different specie of bird. Just across the river overlooking the 4th fairway is Silverstream Retreat, one of the most talked about Wellington accommodation venues.

Silverstream Golf Park features a long established driving range and 9-hole golf course. The driving range is amongst the biggest in the lower North Island with 20 covered bays and a hitting area of up to nearly 300m. There is also a wide-grassed area to hit from. The driving range is floodlit and therefore open to 9pm (last buckets of balls sold at 8.15pm) every day, except Christmas Day. Silverstream Golf Park also includes a well maintained 9-hole golf course which rates amongst the best in Wellington but remains at the low end in cost.
Set in park-like surrounds, this long Par 70 layout is a challenge for all golfers. The course is fully irrigated and intensively groomed with reasonably narrow, treelined fairways. The greens are large, sand based and subtletly contoured. They run true and are generally fast. Most of the greens are guarded by sand bunkers, grass knolls and hollows which add to the challenge when your approach shots miss the target. Both professional and leading amateur tournaments are held at the club frequently, and it is a measure of the course design that sub-par rounds are rare. Access to both courses is from the Military Road Pro-shop.

In 1994 work commenced on the new course with members continuing to play 18-holes. This was made possible by juggling the old course and the new holes as they came on stream. Twelve months later in August 1995 Miramar was set to start another chapter in its history. As Graham Marsh (course architect) said, “Miramar will always be remembered by me as a golf course that was redesigned for all the right reasons-a membership that bonded together to protect their love of the game”.

COMING OF AGE PERFORMANCE FOR TADHG CAMPBELL North Harbour’s number one junior Under 19 player Tadhg Campbell (Muriwai) (pictured above) has had a phenomenal four days the 2014 Charles Tour Muriwai Open held at the famous links from the 1st to the 4th of May. Tadhg fired rounds of 66, 71, 69 and 70 for a 12 under par total of 276 to finish 7th. Most impressive however in a tournament that integrates pros with the amateurs is that Tadhg was the best finishing amateur by 5 shots and the only people ahead of him were experienced professionals. This is a real coming of age performance for the young Muriwai left hander who has had a meteoric rise through the junior sections of the district over the last 5 years. After a very strong 2013 year and with this recent performance Tadhg has no doubt played himself into the very top echelon of men’s amateur golf in the district. The association is very proud of him and we are very fortunate to have players of his talent in North Harbour. For Tadhg and the association 2014 has certainly started on a very positive path. Well done!

Following months of planning the Pupuke Golf Club finally celebrated 100 years with past and present members gathered from throughout NZ and overseas for a week of special events to mark the occasion. The weather played its part with glorious conditions throughout the week. The week commenced on Monday 24th March with a Veterans Open Day, followed on Tuesday by a Woman’s Open Day event. On Wednesday a full field of Men assembled for their Open Day, with one of the highlights of the week on Thursday, a 9 hole event with members past and present dressing up in golf fashions from years gone by. GOLF TRAILS supported on Friday, and at the same time a group of 16 Life Members, Past & Present Presidents gathered for a special commemorative luncheon. A Cocktail Evening on Friday was the perfect occasion for all to mix & mingle with perhaps the highlight of the week for many, The Royal NZ Navy Band piping their way down the 18th fairway with a large crowd lining the fairway and gathered around the 18th green where the band continued to entertain. Cars passing by on East Coast Road stopped (resulting in a standstill) and neighbours congregated to witness the occasion. This was followed with a moving unveiling of the commemorative plaque by Patron, Owen Woolley (celebrating 65 years as a member), to the accompaniment of a lone piper. Not to be outdone, 198 players (a record for the course) participated in the Saturday Ambrose event, and a further 190 gathered in the clubhouse for the formal Centennial Dinner. Guest speaker and past member and Coaching Professional, Guy Wilson, amused the audience with an entertaining insight into his association with Pupuke Golf Club and Lydia Ko. Finally on the Sunday, a well-supported Junior Tournament concluded the week. The Centenary Week of celebrations was a joyous occasion with past and present members enjoying old and new associations and their time as proud members of the Pupuke Golf Club.

The Grange Golf Club and Royal Auckland Golf Club have signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the possible amalgamation of the two clubs, which are separated by a small creek on the border of Papatoetoe and Otahuhu. But The Grange chairman Phil Sheat is dismissing rumours that the merger would involve the sale of any of the 45 hectares, valued at almost $42 million, now occupied by the club. “That’s all speculation – it’s not even on the table,” he says. “The merger discussion is a possibility and I think it’s fair to say that it is one of a number of possibilities. “We’ve taken things no further in any way at all.” Royal Auckland has occupied its site next to Middlemore Hospital for more than a century and has a capacity membership of 1700. DAVIS DOMINATES Tauranga retained the Championship Pennant title by defeating Mount Maunganui at Whakatane recently. Surprisingly it was at the top of the order where Tauranga dominated led superbly by Sam Davis (pictured) who soundly defeated Hayden Beard. Davis has built an outstanding record at Interprovincial level being in three finals and despite working full time as an apprentice green keeper which has limited his preparation, shot out to a commanding lead over the in form Beard and was 4 up after 6 holes and never eased up in winning at the 16th.

At number two, Karl Knedler also rose to the occasion in defeating an out of sorts Bailey Smith and Bay of Plenty Masters Champion, Blair Murdock was never behind against Josef Edge whilst fellow Bay Masters rep Justin Rasmussen finished early in defeating Brent Curnow. The morning foursomes were shared two all so everything was at stake with the singles matches and Tauranga got off to the perfect start with Dave Cooke and Chris Posa in control over Campbell Irvine and Josh Rookes. Rookes and Cooke went to the 18th but the rubber was already decided before
they needed to finish out as with 4 singles matches in the bag and Blair Murdock one up going to the 17th tee the victory for Tauranga was already secured. Mount Maunganui Golf Club did have success in the winning the Senior A match against Opotiki. The match went to a sudden death play-off but unfortunately for Opotiki their nominated player hit his tee shoot out of bounds on the first play-off hole. Tauranga won the Senior B flag by defeating Omokoroa 5.5 to 3.5 and Omanu were too strong for Taupo in the Intermediate grade whilst Hamurana came from behind to defeat neighbours Lake View to win the Junior pennant. PENDER ON THE MOVE IN THE ASIAN TOUR A second consecutive top ten finish means the path to starts on the Asian Tour has opened up for Tauranga professional golfer Jared Pender (pictured).
Following rounds of 74, 74 and 70, the 31-year-old fired an impressive final round five-under par score of 67 at the South Pacific Papua New Guinea Open on the PGA Tour of Australasia in tough conditions to jump into contention for his first title as a professional. The former national amateur representative finished one shot back from Tasmanian Kalem Richarsdson, earning NZD$13,450 for the biggest payday of his career. The result followed on from a sixthplaced finish in the first of two tournaments on the small island nation, but could have been even better had Pender not recorded a bogey five on the par four 17th hole.

Last week, he set the Ngamotu course alight in the Wednesday club tournament with a six-under-par round of 66, which included three twos. “It was one of those days when everything dropped,” he said yesterday. “It’s my best round, my previous best was a 68 at Ngamotu.” Gray’s round started with three pars before a birdie three on the fourth. That was followed by another par and a string of four birdies to finish the nine. He dropped shots on 10 and 17, but made

And as most golfers know, you can coming crashing back down to earth quickly after a good round. Gray played at Patea last Sunday, shooting 81, which included a triple bogey eight on the par-five 16th. “I hadn’t played there for a while. I had a shocker.” Gray, who has been playing golf since he was 13, is also a handy rugby player. He’s a first five-eighth, fullback for Coastal in the senior B club competition. “I practise golf after work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and play on Sundays. I’ve got rugby practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with games on Saturdays.” For the record, Gray’s round at New Plymouth was: Front nine (par in brackets): 4 (4), 4 (4), 4 (4), 3 (4), 4 (4), 2 (3), 4 (5), 4 (5), 2 (3), 31 (36). Manawatu win both A and B Grade Pennant The final round results of the A and B grade Pennant played in May was always going to be more about the fight for promotion and relegation for next years A grade. Going into the round Manawatu was assured of winning the A Grade, however their final round result against Taihape was likely to influence which team would finish at the bottom. Marton and Taihape were equal on points, but Taihape were 3 and a half game points ahead. Unless Marton could halve or beat Levin, it was likely that the bottom placed team would be decided by games. Taihape had the difficult assignment of playing Manawatu at Manawatu, so it was a matter of how many games individual they could win – 2 games would have put them in the favoured position. After the foursomes Marton had narrowed their deficit after being 2 all, and Taihape
were 4 – 0 down. However a crucial one and half games by Taihape in the afternoon by Matt Booth and Duane Dick, proved to be just enough as they tied with Marton on games after their final 7 – 5 loss to Levin. The tie meant that the bottom placed team was decided by their round robin match, won by Taihape. However Marton’s position in A grade will get another life, after a close final result in the B grade played at Rangatira. At the top of the table Castlecliff went into the round equal on points with Manawatu B, and just one game ahead. Manawatu B had a strong line up against the home team Rangatira, whom was sitting at the bottom of the table, while Castlecliff, without their regular number 1 player Tyler Lock, had to face Tawhero. After the morning foursomes Castlecliff remained half a point ahead of Manawatu B, meaning the race for the title would come down to the singles result from both teams. With Castlecliff winning their match 8.5 – 3.5 and Manawatu B winning 10 – 2, Manawatu B had snuck ahead by just half a game, and therefore were the winners of the B grade. However the rules of the competition mean that Manawatu B cannot be promoted to A grade with a team already in that competition, which provides another life for Marton that finished bottom of the A’s. The rules of the competition allow Castlecliff the opportunity to challenge Marton for a spot in the A grade, but this must be played at A Grade teams home course. This match will be arranged to be played at the

came from outside the Nelson region. The tournament is staged at Nelson Golf Links, Greenacres and Motueka Golf Courses with two days to be played on the Nelson Golf Links which has also been chosen to host the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Championships in April this year and for the 2015 Seniors Championships. The courses are all very different. Nelson is a true links course, Motueka is a mature parkland course, with Greenacres offering a mix of waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2014 Nelson Festival of Golf are Monday 20 – Friday 24 October with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up or get out and about and visit the many attrac-
tions the region has to offer. The tournament overlaps again with the Nelson Arts Festival which is a great bonus for non playing partners making the trip to Nelson. Sponsorship has been secured from Waimea Family Estate Wines and Taylor Made Golf and as always the event organisers ask that all competitors support our sponsors whenever possible. There will be daily prizes for individual and team scores and weekly overall prizes for individuals. Entry fees include four rounds of golf, individual and team competitions, golf gift and a two-course dinner to be held during the final prize giving at the Nelson Golf Club on the Friday evening, where we are planning a party atmosphere to finish the week off in style! We are also planning a novelty putting competition which all players will be eligible to enter, on a daily basis, with a putt-off on the Friday for the daily winners. This will be a lot of fun but also great prizes are up for grabs. Visit http://www.nelsongolf.co.nz/festivalofgolf for more information.

Terrace Downs – Innovation in Golf Terrace Downs encourages people into golf by providing different formats to make the game more appealing to a wider audience. In May a unique event was held at Terrace Downs where golf was incorporated with Clay Target Shooting and Archery. 40
The Kaiapoi Blue team of Austin Hamilton, Danny Burnett, Rodney Downes and Ryan Adams beat Pegasus 1 by 2.5 to 1.5 to take home the Kaikoura Cup at Rangiora Golf Club on Sunday 18 May in excellent conditions. Earlier in the day the team defeated Pegasus 2 by 3 to 1 in the semifinal so after a quick lunch and small re-jig to the playing order they were back out to face Pegasus 1 in the final. Team Captain – Rodney Downes – was thrilled with his
team’s/Club’s efforts over the competition – “Congratulations can’t just go to the team on the day, Kaiapoi had 2 teams in the Kaikoura cup this year for the first time in over 5 years, for all of those who played, including 6 junior members, this really was a club effort and something we really did not plan on winning this year, but just shows what can happen.”

PINK BREAKFAST May each year is “Pink Ribbon Breakfast” fundraising month and for several years now, neighbouring clubs – Waitikiri and Bottle Lake – team up to celebrate and support this very good cause. Waitikiri are the hosts and their catering team put on a fabulous buffet breakfast for $15 per person, of which $5 goes straight to the Breast Cancer Foundation. The morning starts off with pink bubbles, then breakfast, followed of course, by a round of golf... with all participants dressed in PINK. www.pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz has all the information if you want to organise something similar in your club and don’t forget to invite your neighbours too.
JUNIOR INTERCLUB FINALS The composite team of Mark Wilson, Jayden Hann, Callum Doak and George Franklin (Pictured above with Manager Pip Deans) took out the Junior Interclub Final on the first play-off hole – from Bottle Lake – at Harewood Golf Course, on Sunday 18 May. Earlier in the day, Ellesmere/Hororata beat Rangiora 2.5 to 1.5 and Bottle Lake beat Russley Blue 3 to 1 in the semi-finals, also played at Harewood. The Individual stars of the Junior Interclub competition were Hayden Neill (Bottle Lake), Amy Weng (Russley Blue) and Momoka Kobori (Rangiora) who shared the top score of 4.5 during the Round Robin competition.
impressive 8-under 208, including a course record of 67 on Thursday. Suh also won the under-15 title while Brooke also achieved the double, adding the under-17 medal to her championship win. Local star Inia Logan won the boys under-17 title with a 2-over aggregate and Zachary May (Russley) took under-13 honours. Other girls to feature were Amelia Garvey (Kaiapoi), who took the under-15 medal, and Danielle Bailey (Invercargill), who won the under-13 event. Otago had mixed results in the boys South Island Inter-provincial team events. The under-19 team finished third and the under-16 quintet won the event for the second time in the past three years. A slow start put the under-19 team out of the winner’s circle but the under-16 team led from start to finish and had to stave off a spirited challenge from Canterbury on the final two days. The under-16 win was led by team captain Logan. No 4 Terry Kim overcame some troubled times to become the team’s second-best scorer. Along with Jacob Bleach, Ryan Whelan and Callum Judkins, the pair collected the gold medals after beating Canterbury by four shots.
