Lydia is broadening golf’s potential audience by 50 percent

ydia Ko may not have won the United States Open but she still continues to raise the profile of golf in New Zealand. Hopes were high that Lydia, at the age of 17, might become the youngest winner of a golf major – either male or female – and become the world’s No 1 ranked player. But an average first round thwarted her chances. She had a six-over par 76 on the first day at Pinehurst No 2 in North Carolina which left her back in the pack. But to Lydia’s credit she rallied well in the last three rounds with scores of 71, 71 and 69 to finish 15th and earn prizemoney of about $US58,000 ($NZ66,000). It still remained a good week’s work. But just as importantly for golf in this country her prospects before the tournament were well covered by all the major news me-

dia outlets. And it has to be remembered that it is almost certainly down to Lydia alone that women’s golf is now appearing live on television. Before Lydia’s emergence onto the world scene the broadcast of live golf telecasts was solely the domain of the men’s game. But the addition of many of the LPGA Tour events, of which Lydia is part of, to the Sky TV schedule has probably also broadened its audience by 50 percent. That 50 percent I refer to is the women population and I cite an example from my own home. My wife thinks golf is a silly game (to which I mentally nod my head in agreement to). But guess what? My wife has been watching Lydia. She has been watching women’s golf. She tells me how well Lydia has played.

She tells me how others have played. She tells me about Lucy Li, the 11-year-old who played in the US Open. My wife thinks golf is not such a silly game (which I mentally nod my head in agreement to). It’s great to have the likes of Lydia flying the New Zealand flag on the world stage. But it is also important that women are well represented at club level. With most clubs struggling for membership numbers, every new recruit – male of female – is welcomed. It is not that long ago that women members at some clubs were not allowed to play one day of a weekend or could not play until after a certain time. But times have changed. Even the highly exclusive Augusta National Golf Club in the United States now has one or two women on its membership.

The future of Golf: John Hart F

or most New Zealanders, John Hart’s name is synonymous with rugby and the All Blacks; but his professional life also includes expertise in business leadership, management and human resources and of course – Golf! His role as Chairman of the organising committee behind the New Zealand Golf Open, saw John as a key figure in revitalising the format to a Pro-Am tournament. Whilst the traditionalists may ponder the change in format, being outside a ‘normal tournament’ has helped attract Government sponsorship, gives sponsors huge opportunities and promotes New Zealand to i nt e r n at io n a l markets. John and the com-

mittee’s vision is to turn the NZ Open into an iconic event in the New Zealand sporting calendar, aiming for the tournament to take place over four days at Queenstown’s three top-tier courses – The Hills, Jack’s Point and Millbrook. The future of golf is indeed interesting and John’s experience in business and sport – given both the highs and lows he has achieved – give him a unique perspective on the essentials of success. ••• The 6th Biennial Golf Manager’s conference of New Zealand is set for Auckland, August 31 to September 2 2014. Alker puts himself in line to join Wilkinson and Lee

T

he chances of New Zealand having three players on the world’s richest golf circuit took an upward turn with the dramatic win of Steve Alker in the United States. Alker won the Cleveland Open in the mid-western state of Ohio in a playoff that lasted a staggering 11 holes. The win catapulted Alker’s ranking on the Web.com tour from 102 to 12 and put himself into contention to graduating to next year’s PGA Tour. The top 25 money earners on the Web.com Tour gain automatic entry to the PGA Tour where tournaments regularly carry prizemoney of $US5-8 million. The Cleveland Open had a total purse of $US600,000. Alker’s winning share was $US108,000 ($NZ125,000) and it took his year’s earnings on the Web.com Tour to $US125,000. New Zealand presently has two players on the PGA Tour. They are Tim Wilkinson and Danny Lee and they clearly demonstrate the gulf in potential earnings between the two tours. Lee, by the middle of last month, had this season earned $US587,000 with a best finish of second. Wilkinson, in the same period, had earned $US566,000 with a best finish of 10th. Alker, 42, has been a professional golfer since 1995. He has won four times on the Web.com Tour of which the first was in 2002 in the Louisana Open in the US. Last month’s win Cleveland

Open win could hardly have been more dramatic. He and Dawie Van Der Walt, from South Africa, were tied for first after the regulation 72 holes. They headed out for a sudden-death playoff and it would take 11 holes before a winner was decided. It was the longest suddendeath playoff in Web.com history and equal longest in PGA Tour history. The previous 11-hole sudden-death playoff came in 1949 when Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum were declared co-winners of the Motor City Open by mutual agreement due to darkness. At the Lakewood Country Club in Cleveland, Alker and Van Der Walt had pars on the first 10 playoff holes before Alker rolled in a shortish putt for a birdie. Alker was relieved to prevail after feeling he had let earlier opportunities slip by. ``I had a lot of chances. I felt like I was inside of Dawie several times and had several chances to win,” Alker said. ``I got a little bit dizzy out there. At one point, and I can’t recall when, Dawie and I looked at each other and I said is anybody going to win?” Alker set up the end to stalemate when he knocked a seven iron to within a few feet of the hole. ``I finally had a right number,” he said. “I had 172 yards and just hit a perfect seven iron.” Alker looked like he would win the tournament in regulation when he chalked up eight

birdies in his first 16 holes of his final round to reach 16-under total. But stumbles on the final two holes dropped him to 14-under and he then waited as Van Der Walt birdied the 17th and 18th holes – the last a 20-foot snaking putt – to force only the second playoff of the tour this year. Alker added: ``I played great on the front nine but then struggled a bit and missed a few fairways coming in. My putting kept me in there.” The win was the culmination of an outstanding week for the former Hamilton player who now lives in Arizona. The previous Monday he finished second in the 36-hole US Open

sectional qualifier in San Francisco area and then grabbed an early flight to Ohio. ``I got about an hour’s sleep,” Alker of his flights. Determined to see a course he had not played, Alker managed to get nine holes on the Tuesday before the tournament after driving directly to the golf course. He added the other nine holes early on Wednesday, before teeing it up for the first tee time at 7.20 am on the Thursday. ``It’s very satisfying,” Alker said of the win. ``I won last year and then to come out and win again this year is really pleasing since I haven’t been in the habit of doing that.”

www.keankart.co.nz

The longest sudden-death playoffs in Web.com Tour history, or it’s equivalent, are:11 holes: Steven Alker defeated Dawie van der Walt in the 2014 Cleveland Open. 8 holes: Eric Booker defeated Notah Begay III in the 1998 Lehigh Valley Open; Gary Christin defeated Mathias Gronberg in the 2009 Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. Longest in PGA Tour history:11 holes: 1949 Motor City Open: Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum were declared co-winners by mutual agreement due to darkness. Alker’s win represents: • Earns his fourth career title • Victory comes in his 199th career Web.com Tour start • Becomes the 22nd player in Web. com Tour history to have four career wins • Adds the 2014 Cleveland Open title to previous wins: - 2002 Louisiana Open - 2009 HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship - 2013 Utah Championship - 2014 Cleveland Open • Win comes at the age of 42 years, 10 months, 11 days • Joins Alex Cejka and Kris Blanks as winners in their 40s on Tour this year • Joins Alex Cejka (Germany), Adam Hadwin (Canada) and Carlos Ortiz (Mexico) as foreign-born winners on Tour this year • Brings his native country’s all-time win total on the Web.com Tour to eight: - Steven Alker (4) - Michael Long (2) - Phil Tataurangi (1) - Danny Lee (1)

CASE STUDY

Membership recruitment – Nelson Golf Club New Zealand Golf has published a number of case studies from golf clubs around the country as clubs strive to improve their situation. The following is from the Nelson Golf Club in its attempt to boost membership numbers. Interestingly, NZ Golf is running a similar promotion, with monthly prizes and an overall prize of a trip to next year’s New Zealand Open, valued at $10,000.

N

elson Golf Club membership levels have mirrored the national trend of declining numbers over the past few years. However, last year the Nelson Golf Club put into place a membership attraction and retention strategy that has worked well. This strategy has two primary objectives – getting people in the door and getting them connected socially. The Nelson GC believes that these objectives can be achieved because people mostly join golf clubs, in fact recreational clubs of any kind, to have an enjoyable experience with other people. Golf specifically gives players challenge, competition, camaraderie and of course

6  GOLFER PACIFIC July 2014

friendship. So the Nelson GC used the emphasis on people as the cornerstone of the marketing programmes it was putting in place.

Challenges 1. Competition from other forms of recreation 2. General negative views of Golf Clubs 3. To get the current membership involved They say biking is the new golf... perhaps. We also live in a world where short attention span and instant gratification are becoming the norm. ``Stuffy and full of old people” are phrases that the Nelson GC had heard regarding golf clubs. Nelson is not like that, but how do they get the word out? The Nelson GC believes the best sales people in any organisation are the ones who are there now and are enjoying their experience. But how do they get them involved?

Solution Nelson Golf Club put together a memberget-member scheme that encouraged the right outcomes. New members who were introduced to

the Nelson Golf Club received 20 percent off their category of subs. The current member who introduced them received the same dollar value off their next subs. This discount attracted new members and has been very successful. The key is that the new members are instantly con-

nected socially through the person who introduced them. That means the Nelson GC has a much better chance of retaining its new members because they are incorporated into the social network. Camaraderie and social interaction at the club has noticeably increased.

golferpacific.co.nz

To get the current members involved the Nelson GC focused on the benefits of the discounts, rather than the task of a member introducing a new member. It’s a subtle difference but it may have influenced greater participation to some degree. The current membership has embraced the concept and the Nelson GC has gained 37 new members through the scheme. The declining membership trend was reversed and the overall membership has increased slightly. Revenue for membership has held steady despite the discounts offered, so next year, providing the Nelson GC retains the new members, it will be ahead financially.

Results

Thirty seven new members so far: The rate of uptake has been exceptional. Revenue has increased: Revenue for membership has increased even with the discounts offered. The Nelson GC will be ahead financially if it retains new members. Membership involvement in marketing increased: There is a lot more potential to develop this into the future. Greater camaraderie and enhancement of the social network: The Nelson GC found that the club’s social activity has increased significantly and the relationships are key to retaining these

members.

Conclusion/summary While the average age at Nelson GC is 55, it has always had a strong cross section across every age range. So the reality is that the Nelson GC has always had the sales force there ready to boost each age category. The challenge was getting them involved. The member-get-member promotion has been an eye opener for the club. Once the membership became mobilised the initiative just took off. The Nelson GC thinks it has brought a number of people into the club who were on the fringes of golf. Many of them already played golf, but previously they were nomadic and didn’t want to belong to a club. But now the power of people and relationships has brought them in the door and also increases the chances of retention. The member-get-member programme was a good initiative because it has involved all of the membership in challenging the issue of member recruitment and retention. It was good to get everyone to own the issue because they are the club’s salesmen. It is early days but it seems possible that the member-get-member could stay in place long term. It’s a win/win scenario for the membership and a healthy outcome for the club overall.

Fox wins again in Tahiti R yan Fox has successfully defended his Tahiti Open title with a one-shot victory over fellow New Zealander Kieran Muir. Fox fired a final round threeunder-par 69 to finish the championship at 20-under par. The big hitting Aucklander began the day with a three-shot lead but had come back to the chasing group mid-way through the front nine after three early bogeys. Muir started well with four early birdies and went on to birdie both 17 and 18 to post a seven-underpar 65 and take outright second. It came down to a 35-ft putt on the 72nd green which Fox needed to two-putt for par and victory. ``I knew it was pretty close coming up the last but knew that a par would win it and that is just what I managed to do” Fox, 27, said. ``I played well all week and absolutely love coming to Tahiti.” This year’s event marked the 30th anniversary of the championship and is an event previously won by fellow New Zealander, Steve Alker who is now in contention to join the PGA Tour in the United States next year.

Dean Murphy

New Zealand Golf Chief Executive

Handicap system changes will make a positive difference

T

he game of golf is unique in so many ways. In my view this is what makes golf the greatest game of all. Not only does golf have a celebrated history full of fine traditions, it has a unique value set that is unrivalled in sport. Through these unique features, the game offers lifelong enrichment for those of us lucky enough to be participants. From a playing perspective, not only can players of different abilities (whether Tiger Woods, our marketing manager Jan Rowsell, our Love Golf ambassador Israel Dagg, or 11-year-old Junior Tiger winner John Misa), play together and compete equitably, they can enjoy a variety of different playing challenges. There are parkland, links, resort or country style courses with obstacles that include sand, water, rough, trees and terrain. Add nature including wind, rain, sun and our game is the greatest of them all. Who could get bored? What knits the competition together is a handicap system that provides us all with a handicap index that fairly represents our playing ability and there are two basic premises that underlie any handicap system. That is that each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. The player and the player’s handicap committee have joint responsibility for adhering to these premises and the latter will now have new tools to assist with equitable competition.

Following a thorough and robust review of the handicap system, which included input from nearly 10,000 golfers and 250 golf clubs, we have listened to your contributions and believe the following changes will make the game more equitable and enjoyable: 1. The opportunity for club committees to identify events as important and tag them as “tournaments” in the handicap system. If players return two exceptional scores in a tournament the formula is such that a handicap index will now be lowered accordingly. 2. The ability for handicap committees to modify any member’s handicap index following a review of a scoring record or evidence that the player’s ability is better than the current handicap index. 3. One 18-hole handicap for all members regardless of their membership category (Note: Clubs can still have a 9-hole membership category. When cards are printed their handicap index will be halved and a course handi-

cap determined). 4. An exemption on the return of some match play cards for handicap purposes. 5. More information in regard to handicapping and competition play displayed at www.golf.co.nz 6. More education for members on the slope number, what it represents and how it makes golf much more equitable. 7. More information to our golf clubs notifying them of when an ``inactive season” should be activated. We recognise that during some seasons courses play very different to the course rating figures. 8. The opportunity for overseas score cards to be entered into our system for handicap purposes. 9. More resource and education for our valued volunteers in regard to course rating. 10. Identifying on www.golf.co.nz the professionals that have a NZ Golf handicap index. These changes will be rolled out progressively over the next six months as the development of the various components is completed. The first changes to be introduced this month being tournament scores and the exemption on the return of some matchplay cards for handicap purposes. We trust these changes will make a positive difference to the handicap system and ensure our handicap index fairly represents our playing ability.

Attention all lefties!! Are you a left-handed golfer? Have you ever thought of joining the National Association of Lefthanded Golfers? We have a membership of over 750 lefties from North Cape to the Bluff involved in our Association. Throughout the year there are approximately 30 fun-filled Leftie tournaments around New Zealand. Many of these tournaments conduct a separated division for your right-handed spouse or partner. Many lifelong friends have been made at these tournaments. There is an annual National Lefthanded Championship held on a different course each year which also attracts overseas players. Many New Zealand lefties also attend the Australian and sometimes World Championships. So why not join us and you too can be involved in these Lefties get-togethers. For only $25 a year you receive regular newsletters which keep you up to date with the latest in Leftie news and information on the next tournament venues or check our website.

Natural golf is good for the game H

aving just watched the US Open and Martin Kaymer’s outstanding win at Pinehurst, it was a master class in golf course management. How he was able to win by eight shots was simply outstanding. But the question I ask is if your golf course was like Pinehurst No 2 would you enjoy playing it? In my situation, being based at the Chisholm Park links golf course in Dunedin, we often dry out and the course becomes slightly hard and bouncy which many golfers don’t enjoy. ``It’s not true golf”, say some players who don’t enjoy playing the hard fairways that feature a distinct roll. Most golfers that complain about dried-out golf courses struggle to hit good iron shots off hard lies. They prefer the forgiving nature of the green, soft and lush fairways. Yet watching Pinehurst and the upcoming British Open at Royal Liverpool, these are golf courses that traditional golfers love and the top players in the world relish. Pinehurst No 2 is unique in that the golf course does not have traditional grass

but rather, sandy dune rough areas with tussock and scrappy weeds. This probably saves some money on course maintenance, as I doubt they spend any money maintaining the rough area. Meanwhile, the golf course is not a lush green oasis but this seems to be what most golfers want these days. I guess that is why Augusta, the venue of The Masters, is so highly regarded and seen as the measure of what the perfectly manicured golf course should look like. Unfortunately most golf courses do not have major course budgets like Augusta. With the challenges of irrigating golf courses to the level that some require and in order to maintain the playability, I can see Pinehurst No 2 becoming a future model for drought resistant golf. Add in some of the great courses like Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath and you start thinking do we need to have typical rough at golf courses anymore? You would have to manage the uproar that would occur at most golf courses around the world if the course management and superintendent said we are not

going to maintain the rough except to top the grass off. Would you as a member of a golf club be happy? Would you be happy to pay green fees at a golf course with that policy? Probably not. Yet, this is what some of the best golf courses in the world are doing. When you factor in the cost versus benefits of not looking after the rough and then the savings and community benefits of not watering the waste or rough areas, you are really ensuring that you are producing a traditional style golf course. I wager that there won’t be a lot of closely mown rough at the British Open. If one reflects on the first definition of golf: ``The game of golf consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the rules”. Does fairway or rough matter? No. Personally, I am a fan of natural-style golf courses and in particular links courses. So bring on the British Open; I look forward to seeing more rough areas and sandy lies when the best players miss the fairways - just like the rest of us.

Duncan Simpson

New Zealand PGA Chief Executive

Saying farewell to Jim Clelland T

he game of golf in New Zealand, and the Professional Golfers’ Association in particular, lost a great servant recently when Jim Clelland lost his battle with cancer last month. Described as ``part of the fabric of golf in New Zealand” by Frank Nobilo in a message to a commemorative service at the Taupo Golf Club, Jim was a scratch amateur player in the Wairarapa in the 1960s when he spotted an advertisement for a club professional. He applied and was appointed the Taupo GC professional in 1966. In those days a professional trained on the job, and five years later Jim qualified as a full member of the PGA of New Zealand. He remained at Taupo for some years, and then moved to Turangi as general manager of that golf club before returning to Taupo for a career switch to real estate. He maintained his PGA membership throughout and spent time on the PGA board including a stint as treasurer, before taking up the role of national events manager in the early 2000s, a position he held until his passing. In 2007 Jim suffered a serious accident which eventually resulted in the amputation of his right leg below the knee. That didn’t stop him returning to the golf course in short order, attaining a handicap of 1.4, scoring less than his age on many occasions and being more than competitive in seniors’ pro-ams when he found the time to play. Jim’s fellow PGA members often complained that his disability gave him an unfair advantage, suggesting he had a hydraulic leg he could secretly adapt to sloping

lies, and that it also stopped him swaying off the ball as he apparently used to. In truth, this was a mark of respect as he could beat most of his contemporaries on any given day. Most people meeting Jim for the first time would have had no idea he was an amputee. On several occasions, he was admonished for parking his car in a disabled space, but this was quickly dealt with by ``flashing” his artificial limb which inevitably resulted in abject apologies from the accusers once they realised their error. Jim was known throughout New Zealand, Australia and further afield through his role with the PGA and his playing. Thousands of golfers in New Zealand knew him through the Holden Scramble which he ran successfully for many years, and through pro-am events which took him the length and breadth of the country. He was a firm believer in the benefits of connecting golfers of all levels of ability with PGA professionals, and also of encouraging professionals to get involved with golf clubs both large and small. The scramble format proved an ideal vehicle for this. Jim wanted to give as many players as possible the chance to realise their dream of playing professional golf. He provided encouragement, mentoring and blunt advice when needed, and fought very hard to maxim-

ise their playing opportunities. Through the NZ PGA q-school and the Mondiale NZ PGA order of merit, a number of young pros have made a start towards their holy grail, and others have been able to rebuild their careers after losing status on other professional golf tours. His involvement with the Taupo community was huge, encompassing a period as a district councillor and service on a number of charitable trusts including the Lake Taupo Cycling Trust and the Lake Taupo Events Trust, as well as Taupo junior cricket and the Taupo ironman. Of course golf was his real focus, and to say he had a passion for the game would be a considerable understatement. He had many plans for his future work at the PGA, which included the return of a scramble event and a significant increase in the number of events and prizemoney on offer on the New Zealand pro-am circuit. He was also excited by the return of the NZ PGA Championship to Auckland, and was looking forward to playing a key role in that tournament. Sadly his time was cut short, but his colleagues and fellow PGA members, plus his many friends in the world of golf will be working to ensure those plans carry on in recognition of Jim’s legacy and outstanding contribution to the game of golf.

GOLF EVENT

Nelson Festival of Golf, 2014

C

onsidering playing in a multiround tournament this year? ... then this is the one for you to enter. At last year’s inaugural event, it was dubbed the “friendly tournament” as everyone involved, players and organisers, had such a great time! The tournament is staged at Nelson, Greenacres and Motueka Golf Courses with two days to be played on the highly regarded Nelson Golf Course which hosted the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Championships in April this year, and received great reviews from the top players in the country and Nelson will also host the 2015 Seniors Championships in February. The courses are all very different, giving the players a real challenge for the week. Nelson being a true links course, whereas Motueka is a mature parkland course, with Greenacres offering a mix of challenging waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2014 Nelson Festival of Golf are Monday 20 - Friday 24 October with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up, get out and about to visit the many attractions the region has to offer or get some practice for the next two days of golf. The tournament dates again coincide with the Nelson Arts Festival - a great bonus for non playing partners to enjoy when making the trip

to Nelson. Non playing partners are also very welcome to join us for the major prize giving dinner on the Friday evening. The organising committee has decided to keep the number of entries to 128, the same as last year. This created both a competitive yet friendly environment for all the participants. By the end of the week players had played with and made new friends with golfers from all over New Zealand. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, said, “at the final prize giving it was really pleasing to hear many of the competitors saying how much they’d enjoyed their week, as we tried to create a tournament that mixed both great golf and great fun, and it seems we did just that! “We are delighted that we have had many of last year’s entrants already registered to enter the tournament again this year,” Derek said. “So if you are keen to enjoy a week of golf in October in the stunning Nelson region, now is the time to register to confirm your place.” Entry forms and full details are available on our website www.nelsongolf.co.nz/festivalofgolf or call us on 03-548-5029 for more information. Sponsorship has been secured from, Waimea Family Estate Wines, Taylor Made Golf, 4 Seasons Home & Leisure and Total Golf and as always the event organisers ask that all competitors support our sponsors

whenever possible. Without the support of such sponsors, we would not be able to offer such wonderful prizes. For instance this year the hole-in-one prizes are still being finalised, but we will be offering a wonderful hot tub spa pool from 4 Seasons Home & Leisure and $5k of golf equipment from Total Golf for all competitors to win for that magic shot, an “Ace in the Hole”. We will also be running our lucky draw prizes, where each day, 4 lucky competitors will win vouchers from our chosen restaurant partners, to enjoy some delicious food during their stay in the region. At the time of printing we are delighted to confirm that the following Nelson restaurants have all intimated their involvement in our tournament prize scheme: Lonestar Restaurant, The Vic’s Brew Bar and the Speight’s Ale House. The event itself will be for individual and team stableford scores contested at Nelson on the Monday and Friday, Motueka on the Tuesday and Greenacres on the Thursday. There will be daily prizes for individual and team scores and weekly overall prizes for individuals. The Entry fee includes four rounds of golf, individual and team competitions, golf gift and a two-course dinner to be held during the final prize giving at the Nelson Golf Club on the Friday evening, where we are planning a party atmosphere

to finish the week off in style! Organisers want to build on the great success of last year’s tournament. They invite you to register now and enjoy the challenging competition offered on the variety of different courses along with the opportunity to widen your golfing experiences, meet new friends and most of all enjoy the week. The golf days will start with a 9.15am shotgun start basis ensuring that all players are back in the clubhouse around the same time providing a tense yet light-hearted atmosphere for the daily prize giving. CASE STUDY

Amalgamation – Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club New Zealand Golf has published a number of case studies from golf clubs around the country as clubs strive to improve their situation. The following is from Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club in Wellington which undertook the complicated task of amalgamation. Some of the debate spiralled to whether there should free coffee and tea for members.

B

oulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club is the first in New Zealand to be created from the amalgamation of two independent and neighbouring golf clubs. One was the Hutt Golf Club and the other the Boulcott Golf Club and they were previously adjoining each other. John Freer, a member of the amalgamation committee, said that financial pressure, the need for long-term sustainability and necessary local council flood protection development were the main reasons the clubs merged. Boulcotts GC was trading along nicely – they were static, there was no growth and weren’t carrying any debt; The Hutt GC had $1 million debt. The Hutt GC also had a $7 million asset so the debt – asset ratio was quite acceptable but it was something the Hutt GC wished to remove. The catalyst for the merger was a flood protection plan which was being implemented across the golf clubs’ lands by the Greater Wellington Regional Council. The flood protection project involved the construction of a stop bank which was 4.5m high, 50m base and it stretched for 2.5km. With the Greater Wellington Regional Council wanting to undertake that work, rather than put it through residents’ property, the best option was to put the stop bank through the two golf courses. This brought the clubs together and an amalgamation committee was formed. It had the very difficult task of bringing together two very different courses – 80-yearold nine-hole Boulcott’s course (with 500 members and annual fees of $500) and the 120-year-old, 18-hole, Hutt Golf Club (with 900 members and annual fees of $1250).

Challenges Rising cost, declining membership and history The Hutt GC recognised that golf, like a number of sports, was struggling to attract new members. It was difficult to meet the increasing costs to run a golf course particularly with the significant infrastructure that needs to be looked after. These were the factors which were concerns for the ongoing capability of both golf clubs. Despite the benefits, the merger also met some conflict from a minority. The patrons argued that: The merger had ignored their previous club’s history, the new name of the Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club was inappropriate as it favoured the Boulcott’s Club rather than the Hutt GC and the variance in fees was unfair as the former Boulcott’s members would be paying less than the former Hutt members over the next five years.

Solution We took the merger idea back to the governance committees at both clubs – the 12  GOLFER PACIFIC July 2014

board of the Hutt GC and the committee of the Boulcott’s GC – and we got their endorsement to proceed with a feasibility study towards the merger. Once we had that mandate we then set about identifying the right people to go on the working group to test the feasibility of the merger. “That was one of the critical parts – getting the right people. What constitutes the right people? People who are forward thinking, people who left their egos or personal opinions at the committee room door and people who could work with others. People who worked together to promote what was best for the golf community and long term survival of the clubs.” The merger committee from the two clubs were a group of people who were brought together to work on the project. Hutt had 900 members and Boulcott had 500 so there was quite an imbalance. “We decided that there would be equal representation from both clubs. So rather than having one third – two thirds we had four representatives from each club. It was all equal.” Once the feasibility group was selected they were given four weeks to cover all aspects of the merger. They came up with a comprehensive document entitled Playing to Win that covered what was needed to manage the merger. They then looked at the key considerations, the current situation and tracked where the golf clubs were at. It was a long and deliberate process as they outlined the strategy. This included everything from what is it going to cost to join the new club? What are the financial benefits/negatives of the merged club? One club had a nine-hole philosophy, the other had an 18-hole philosophy, how do they bring that together? One club had an older aged membership, the other has a younger, how do they bring them together? What do we do with the clubhouse? Do they bring poker machines across? And even free tea and coffee? “All of those things were considered by the feasibility group. “We wanted to show that we did mean business. We were playing with more than 200 years of history of the two golf clubs. We wanted to make sure that we did all of that justice.” Because of the significance of the decision the feasibility group required a twothirds majority in the vote to pass the deci-

sion. “We felt that the decision was too big to leave to a single majority.”

The result was one new club, 1300 members, 200 years of history, $70,000 profit The Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club was created. Membership numbers went up to 1300 members, it has now come back to a manageable 1200. There are 180 children on the junior programme, making a total of over 1300 members at the club. The clubhouse activity in the first five months of the year, with only three months as a merged club, returned a profit of $70,000. There was immediate benefit to having a greater number of people use the facility. The merger will also provide the opportunity to build new facilities and a chance to design a new course. A new clubhouse will be built alongside new practice facilities and the rooms will incorporate the combined 200 years of history of their parenting clubs.

Conclusion/summary Now that the merger is complete, John Freer feels they got it pretty right but there were some lessons learnt. “I don’t think we would have done a lot differently. One thing would be around the

name.” The club hosted a special general meeting at which more than 400 members attended to discuss a name change and the resolution was lost. The learning was that any time that there was a big change – e.g. name of the club, clubhouse, – there is a need to make sure that there is effective communicate with the membership The Boulcott’s Farm GC did a great job of communicating at the start but the project gained momentum “Like a runaway steam train” and a couple of things could have been done better. The amalgamation had plenty of peaks and troughs, Freer said: “There were days when I would be totally over it”. Freer said mitigating the areas of concern was important. “The key was good communication and listening to the concerns. There was a balance that needed to be met of listening to these issues and getting the job done. “Membership has a stake in what you are doing so you always have to be prepared to listen to them. It is not just listen, but listen and evaluate what they are saying. You have also got to have the ability to cut out the nonsense and not get too side-tracked to what you are trying to do. That is a balancing act that anyone who is running a sports club has to face every day.”

Future “We have been in place three years and we still have some way to go. It is going to take five years for the clubs to knit in and become one club. I have been really impressed by the way members of both clubs have embraced it.” The first meeting between the two clubs saw all the Hutt members on one side of the room and all the Boulcott’s members on the other. The next meeting both club representatives were all mixed up and that has been reflected in the golf – both members now play often mixed from both clubs and mix in the café. Looking what has happened since the merger, the five-year stop bank project was completed in half the estimated time. On the course 24 new holes are being built – 10 are already completed while a new car park, maintenance facility and clubhouse will be constructed over the next two years. This would never have happened if the two clubs had not come together.

TaylorMade Golf now driving the Masters T

he 2014 Best Ball Challenge Final will be held over 3 days in conjunction with The Taylormade World Masters Golf Tournament and Go Golfing PTY LTD. Club golfers are set to be the big winners with TaylorMade Golf signing on as title sponsor for the 19th annual World Masters Golf Championship on the Gold Coast from 19 to 25 October 2014. The TaylorMade announcement marks a new beginning for this tournament which was well known as the Mitsubishi Masters. Mitsubishi Motors had sponsored the tournament since it started 19 years ago. Hosted by Go Golfing, Managing Director Peter McCarthy said he was grateful for Mitsubishi Motors long term support and excited about what TaylorMade Golf will bring to the event. “Mitsubishi was Go Golfing’s first ever sponsor and their support allowed us to present a tournament that has been enjoyed by more than 13,000 golfers over the past 18 years. While it may take me a little while to stop calling this tournament the Mitsubishi Masters, there is genuine excitement around what TaylorMade Golf brings to the experience.” TaylorMade Golf is well known the world over as the leading manufacturer of golf equipment for tour players and everyday

golfers. Australia’s own Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Paula Creamer and Jessica Korda are among the tour winners playing TaylorMade. Part of sporting giant adidas, TaylorMade also have Ashworth and Adams Golf in their brand portfolio. The TaylorMade World Masters Golf Championship is open to male and female golfers aged 35 and over. There is 18 age and handicap divisions, guaranteeing golf-

ers compete and play with golfers their own age and standard. Players enjoy a professional tournament experience as well as nightly social and entertainment events headlined by a welcome dinner featuring international comedy and a gala presentation dinner. There’s over $100,000 in prizes which must be won and a car, overseas golf tours and luxury golf holidays are among the major prize draws.

Jerome Ballard from Twin Creeks in Sydney has an app on his phone that counts down the days to the World Masters. “This will be my 13th straight year. It’s just a sensational event, very social, great value and the highlight of my golfing year. It’s also hassle free as Go Golfing book my flights, accommodation, golf transfers and valet my clubs from course to course. I love it.” The success of the World Masters on the Gold Coast inspired Go Golfing in 2000 to start the Wrest Point Masters in Hobart. Fifteen years on this event continues to attract 400+ golfers for what is arguably Australia’s best ‘week of golf’. Go Golfing’s plans for worldwide expansion of Masters tournaments has got off to a great start with 600 golfers competing in the inaugural Centara World Masters in Thailand. China and Vietnam are also on the drawing board. Starting with the Mitsubishi Masters 19 years ago, Go Golfing Travel now takes golfers all over Australia and to 20 countries for tournaments, tours and holidays as well as hosting record numbers of international visitors here to enjoy Australia’s golf and attractions. The Bonnington – Neho goes wire to wire Kadin Neho (Whangarei) led from start to finish claiming the First National Mangawhai Invitational, affectionately known as ‘The Bonnington’. The 2014 field comprised some 60 top amateurs, 12 of which possessed “plus” handicaps, drawn largely from the upper North Island. Three great days of golf eventually saw Neho, the 2013 New Zealand Amateur Champion emerge as the winner of the Tom Bonnington Cup for the first time with a 3-round total of 210 (69,74,76), 3 over par. Neho was chased hard on the final day by Sheldon Kearns (Waipu) whose final round of 68 was the low round of the tournament. Despite the great effort Kearns came up 2 short of Neho’s total but 3 ahead of Wesley Jeon (Whitford). The Nett competition was won by Lee Newman (Mangawhai), the former Northland senior representative having returned to competitive golf through the Championship Pennant competition earlier in the year. The Tom Bonnington Trophy played for by second division and played from the white tees over 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday went to Gavin Ashwell of Wellsford. Thanks must go to Mike McGarry and his First National Real Estate team for their continued generous sponsorship and to the many club members who helped provide accommodation, raked bunkers and acted as spotters and starters. The weather was great; the course presented superbly and, overall, the tournament was a resounding success. Full results can be found online at http:// www.golfnorthland.co.nz

Northern Wairoa Open – Nitsche wins senior title Whangarei teen Christian Nitsche upstaged an experienced field to win the Northern Wairoa Golf Open on Sunday, ending former New Zealand Amateur Champion Kadin Neho’s three year reign. The 15 year old from Whangarei Boys High School claimed his first senior open title having come close in 2013 with a runner up finish at the Bay of Islands Strokeplay. Northland Golf Development Manager Michael Macdonald is impressed with Nitsche’s continued development “Christian is a hard worker; he is the kind of kid who will go to the gym before school so he

can practice in the afternoon, not just one or the other.” Macdonald also noted that Nitsche who was a regular member in the Northland junior team last year already has a couple of top ten results on the New Zealand Golf Order of Merit in 2014 courtesy of a third place finish at the Auckland Anniversary tournament in January and a tie for seventh at the North Shore Classic just a week ago. Kerikeri golfer Alex Neely claimed the tournament low round with six under par 66 in the first round but fell back over the closing two rounds to finish fourth at two over par (218) overall. Chase McKeown (Waipu), finished runner up for the second straight year two shots back with a three round total of 215 the only other player behind Nitsche to finish under par for the tournament. Third place went to Braden Keown (Waipu) at even par 216. In the second division Ian Dunn (Waiotira) finished first four shots clear of Wayne Gravatt (Wellsford) with a further two shots back to local Ryan McEvoy (Northern Wairoa). The next trial for senior representative hopefuls is the Bream Bay Classic at Waipu Golf Club on the 5th and 6th of July.

JUNIOR PENNANT – Whangaroa Victorious Being front runners for the entire season, the final match between Whangaroa and Waipu was always destined to be a close affair and despite the eventual score line that is just how it played out. Of the Kiwi course players Kendall WyattLogan (Whangaroa) got the first points on the board with a 2&1 win over Waipu number three Nic Byles. The match between number fours Ethan Leslie (Whangaroa) and Matthew Prinsloo (Waipu) proceeded to the final hole all square. The decisive act, a successful curling 5 foot putt for par from Leslie gave Whangaroa their second point and with it the initiative as the number one and two players headed into the back nine. At that stage Waipu lead in both of the remaining matches, Michael Walker (4up)

and Michael McRae (1up) and a playoff looked like a possibility. Both Whangaroa players buoyed by the news of the victories by their team mates had other ideas however, Taylor Wyatt-Logan reducing the deficit to 1 down (against Walker) and Brooke Kingi having a streak of wins to swing the match back in favour of Whangaroa. Kingi, the current Northland women’s number one showed the value of representative experience and went on to defeat McRae 3&2. In the remaining match Walker managed a half at the final hole to hang on and win 1up and claim a point for Waipu. In the playoff for third and fourth between Northland/The Pines and Mangawhai a playoff was required to separate the two teams after they finished regulation play tied at 2-all. For the second week in a row Soktaerodh Sean (Northland/The Pines) was called on, this time reversing the result from the previous occasion and claiming the bronze medal for her side. The matches were played in superb conditions at Whangarei Golf Club with a sizeable gallery of parents, grandparents and club supporters watching the matches unfold. Next up for the juniors is the Northland Under 23 Classic at Sherwood Park on Tuesday and Wednesday the 8th and 9th of July followed by the Top of the Harbour junior tournament at Waipu on Monday 14th July.

Waipu go back to back The two competing teams being Waipu GC and Whangarei GC displayed all that could be required of a Championship final at Sherwood Park recently. The conduct of the players in both skill and sportsmanship was a credit to both the event and golf in general. There was a pace of play guideline in place due to a few recent issues but this was not needed at all, both rounds were completed in a splendid time and as was to happen, the event went to a sudden death play off. This was to cover three extra holes with the number ones Chase McKeown [Waipu] and Christian Nitsche [Whangarei] competing. Both players concentration was evident to the watching spectators and greatly appreciated. A pair of birdies at the first playoff hole (par 4 16th) including a chip in from Nitsche and a 15ft putt from McKeown were followed by a pair of pars at the second (par 3 17th). A birdie on the third play off hole (par 4 18th) by McKeown proved to be the decisive blow as Nitsche with a par was unable to match him. The win sealed a second consecutive Championship win for Waipu having been the holders from 2013. As previously stated the standard of both play and sportsmanship is to be commended too all. Mention should also be made of the Golf Referee for the day, Graham Webster and his connection with the players. 

NORTH HARBOUR

Acknowledging Volunteers and Players It has been a month of acknowledgements at the North Harbour Golf Association. On the 11th of June Phil Mosley received a framed certificate and shop voucher for being inducted in the North Harbour “Hall of Fame” in 2013. GOLF TRAILS In addition to the other prizes James Davis received a framed original North Harbour playing shirt to highlight having 10 appearances in the Men’s Interprovincial for the district. Finally long term North Harbour selector Mike Davis who retired in 2013 after 12 years as a volunteer was acknowledged with a special speech and a presentation of a putter which he hopes to utilise now that he has more time to play the game! Congratulations to these players and volunteers for their amazing achievements in the North Harbour district.

North Shore had won the major pennant title for 2014. Muriwai would take consolation however in winning the Rangitoto Reserves competition. In the promotion/ relegation match Peninsula defeated West Coast Trophy winners Waitakere comfortably to ensure they stay in the Championship Nobilo division for 2014. Ryan Leslie of Muriwai has subsequently been awarded the North Harbour selectors trophy for his season in 2014. Playing No.1 for Muriwai he completed 8 matches against the top players in the district and had a record of 7-1.

2014 North Shore Classic Jason Gulasekharam continued his fine start to the season shooting 10 under for the three rounds of the tournament. The course was in superb shape and a host of top amateur players attended the event. Well done Jason!

Finals Day The 2014 North Harbour Men’s Finals Day was held at Pupuke Golf Club on the 18th of May and there were some amazing battles. In the Nobilo Championship final nothing could separate North Shore and Muriwai after they finished on 4-4 after the eight matches were completed. A playoff ensued between Jason Gulasekharam and Ryan Leslie (who had shot 64 to dispatch Cam Jones in the finals match). With a crowd of over one hundred people following the players Jason, to the jubilation of his team mates and club supporters, would win on the 3rd sudden death playoff hole and

Pictured is the winning North Shore team for the Nobilo Pennant Championship.

North Harbour School Golf Tournaments Harbour Golf’s Junior Golf Coordinator Pam Greenhalgh has been running school golf tournaments to promote the game to kids throughout the district. The first two events were played on the 13th and 27th of May and each day attracted over 75 players who competed for prizes in a fun junior friendly ambrose format. More schools and kids have expressed interest in

Over the last six weeks 20 primary and intermediate school teams participated in three Golf Days at Peninsula Golf Course in Silverdale run by the North Harbour Golf Association. The Ambrose format attracted a number of top teams from across the North Harbour area as well as many teams who were introducing new players to golf. The Primary School Winners after the three rounds were Summerland Primary on a score of 90 closely followed by Kristin Primary on 95 and the Intermediate School Winners were Pinehurst Team 1 with score of 100 – who came from behind in the final round to beat Murrays Bay Intermediate by one shot and Rosmini Intermediate by 3 shots. “The school competition was a huge success” said Junior Golf Manager Pam Greenhalgh. “At each event we had between 70 and 80 golfers, who all strived playing the Team Ambrose format. The competition was alive right up until the last putt went in. This is an exciting time for Junior Golf in North Harbour as there are many talented young players emerging and a number of tournament opportunities available for them to compete in. The next event is the North Harbour Primary and Intermediate School Championships that will be played at the Huapai Golf Club on 21st August. Pictured are Keegan Jephson, Joseph, Knowles, Yeonsoo Son and Jaewoo Son.

Best snapper caught while faking a sick day The New Zealand Golf Course Superintendents Association (NZGCSA) awards were given out at a conference dinner for the NZ Fine Turf Seminar, recently held in Waitangi. These awards were Host Recognition Awards which are given to the Golf Course Superintendents who oversaw major golf tournaments in NZ for the previous year. They were given out as part of a highly amusing evening which included former All Black Ian Jones as a guest speaker, and a mock awards ceremony from the Northland Association which included a variety of humorous awards such as ‘best snapper caught while faking a sick day’. Akarana ‘s Stuart Baird, Course Superintendent was honoured with an award for his work in presenting Akarana for the North Island Amateur Tournament held in conjunction with the Charles Tour in April this year. National NZGCSA president Brendan Allen told Golfer Pacific that the NZGCSA also has other significant awards including an Environmental Award, and Excellence award (which are both awarded every two years), and a Trainee Award. “At Waitangi we also launched the 1st Future Turf Managers Initiative (FTMI) which is a mentoring and development program designed to increase the management, communication and conflict resolution skills of the best of the up and coming turf managers. We are an Association that has been around since 1940.”

KING CUP WINNERS

Te Aroha golfer wins Thames Valley

Congratulations to our King Cup

Te Aroha Golf Club was yet again the

venue for the 65th Thames Valley Matchplay Championship which this year resulted in local club member, Kane Lucas, claiming the top award. In a tournament that continues to attract golfers from various north island clubs it was no surprise to see previous Te Aroha member Doug Atkinson notch up his 40th consecutive appearance. Doug claims the yardage has increased slowly over the years !! In Division 1, Kane Lucas overcame fellow club member Mark Wilson 5 and 4 in the semi-final to be faced in the final by last year’s winner Ewan Dawe, a 1-handicap player from the Manukau Club. The game was only decided on the 36th hole when Kane came through 1-up to win the LPA Potter Cup. Ever popular Tahuna visitor Troy Radovancich was the winner over Nick Price in Division 2 while in Division 3, Te Aroha member Karl Mold won out against fellow member Dennis Williams and Div 4 went to Peter Gurr, over Peter Elgar. Ron Braddick claimed the Llana Heron cup in the stableford competition. The tournament organizers were congratulated by a number of the visitors on the high standard of course presentation and management of the event and in closing off the weekend, Te Aroha club president Mike Priest expressed his appreciation to the tournament sponsors and to all the volunteers for once again helping to ensure that this remains a top sporting attraction in the Thames Valley. BOB’S AT HOME AT WAIHI High on the wall above the billiard tables in the lounge at Waihi Golf Club is a modest wooden plaque, on which a few names are inscribed—the Wait For Age Shield. To qualify for entry on this commemorative board, in one 18-hole round of golf a player must have as many strokes, or less than his or her age. As far as is known, it has not been achieved since Raynor Nottle’s feat in February 2002, until May 2014 when Bob Hoggard (pictured) on a 19 handicap played one stroke under his age, with 84 off the stick. Only a little over a year before, in May 2013, Bob achieved his fifth hole-in-one, playing with a six iron from the par three 15th hole at Waihi. He has aced all the par threes at Waihi, and he says “rather than any great skill, I believe it is just good luck. There are many good golfers who have never hit a hole-in –one, and they just come out of the blue.” Bob has been playing golf since 1971, and although he enjoys the challenge of playing other courses, his favourite is his home Club, Waihi.

WAIHI TOURNAMENT SUCCESS There is only one word to describe the Open tournament held at Waihi on Friday May 16, that was generously sponsored by Ebony Fashions of Waihi Beach, Birkenhead, Tirau, Tauranga, Ngatea, and Hamilton—outstanding! Organisation could not have been better, the course was groomed

to perfection, the weather was sunny with little wind, there was a large field of players from nineteen Clubs in the field, and the Sales table was groaning with items with a domestic theme. They came from Lakes Resort, Piopio, Remuera, Titirangi, Whangamata, Thames, Pauanui, Horsham Downs, Morrinsville, Hamilton, Tauranga, Omanu, Tahuna, Fairview, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Matamata, Mount Maunganui, Otumoetai, and 15 players from Omokoroa, and if their scores were not good enough to earn a prize, at least there was a distinct possibility of drawing something from the Sales table.

Results:Best gross over the field: Lesley Noel 88 ( Mt Maunganui) Division 1— Best Nett: Nan Hoggard 71 (Waihi); Runner–Up: Shoneen Dunning 72 ( Waihi). Division 2— Best Nett: Gretchen Potter 68 (Tahuna) Runner-Up: Margaret Ritchie 68 (Waihi). Best Stableford: Nancy Ross (Waihi) 36. Runner-Up: Jill Stent (Thames) 36. Claudia Diggelmann 36 (Waihi); Dawn Adams ( PioPio), Niria Gerbich (Waihi) 35; Judy de Jong (Omokoroa) 34; Marie Rickard (Waihi), Sandra Hurley (Fairview), Gill Ward (Pauanui), Jenny Gallaugher (Waihi) 33; Helen Tidswell (Waihi), Pink Leow (Omokoroa) 32; Adrienne Lynch), Heather Houston (Waihi), Di Palmer (Tauranga), Gail Broomhall, Pat James (Omokoroa), Denise McConnon (Waihi) 31; Marion Lunjevich (Te Aroha), Trish Peart (Waihi) 30. Twos: Shirley Smith (Lakes Resort), Denise McConnon, Jessie Gear (Waihi). Longest Putt—Division 1: Teresa Burt (Omanu). Division 2 : Judy de Jong (Omokoroa). Nearest the Pin on N° 8— Division 1: Judy

Crawford ( Whangamata). Division 2: Jane Crawford (Waihi). President’s Trophy for Best Local Stableford score: Margaret Ritchie (Waihi) 39.

JAN BEAUMONT VISITS Players in the field on Wednesday May 21 at Waihi Golf club were very fortunate to have in their midst Jan Beaumont from Remuera, a golf referee of 30 years’ experience, who in the past has refereed the British Ladies Open, and more recently the New Zealand Men’s Open. Ms Beaumont gave a most interesting and informative talk on the Rules of Golf, and in particular she spoke about the recent and important changes to the Rules. She has written and illustrated an easy-to-read booklet entitled “Golf Basic Rules”, which is available free of charge to all golfers. Clubs may apply for copies through New Zealand Golf.

MEN V WOMEN AT WAIHI A popular annual fixture in the Waihi golfing calendar is the Men versus Women competition, instigated in 1999 by Mrs Pat Hay, who was Club Captain at the time. Rivalry has always been keen, with an equal distribution of wins and losses over the years, and it was no exception on Sunday June 15 when a good number of players turned up to do battle. The Nine Holers also fielded a team, starting two hours later than the 18-hole players, calculated so that all would finish at about the same time, ready for presentation of the trophy. The competition format is two Foursomes, four Fourball Best Ball, and as many Single matches as possible, with the best nett on each hole determining the winner of the hole. Men, being of superior strength and fortitude were required to give two shots to their opponents, which were added to the Ladies’ handicaps. This requirement is determined by the previous year’s result, which having been a draw in 2013 with a two-shot advantage, remained the same. Had it been a loss to the Ladies in 2013, there would have been a three-shot advantage this year. It was a resounding win for the Ladies team, which although very satisfying, means that next year the two-shot advantage will

Open Letter from Omokoroa Golf Club “Appreciation and Thanks” We at Omokoroa are a country club and, as a community, rely on each other where we can, and when we require assistance for the many projects which are needed to keep our club operational it is a necessity to apply to the various funding bodies. As we are nearing the end of our current financial year, we would like to thank

those organisations who have so generously contributed to our club members and to our wider community. • Lion Foundation who contributed to the cost of a new fairway mower. With our old mower becoming problematic, costly to repair, and uncomfortable to use, and the very real need to look after the health and safety of our volunteer rough mowing crew who are indispensable, the time had come to replace the old rough mower. With this being a costly exercise, the Lion Foundation’s donation was very gratefully received. • Bay Trust who contributed to the cost of an Automated External Defibrillator. Following the death of a member on the course earlier this year it was decided that the time had without doubt come to purchase an AED. As a community, we are not close to emergency services help, and it was deemed a necessity. Through Bay Trust, a very generous donation from a club member and a contribution from the Saturday Men, Ladies, Vets and 9 Hole, we now have the monies required. • Pub Charity who covered the cost of a roof over the diesel tank and bund and a chemical wash down pad. We at Omokoroa are an Audubon certified environmentally sensitive area and take our environmental stewardship seriously. We have both preserved and re-established natural habitats for a wide variety of threatened species of birds, and

QUEENS BIRTHDAY TOURNAMENT AT FEILDING The Queen’s Birthday weekend brought perfect weather for the Feilding Hotel Five Star Liquor Men’s 54-hole tournament. Our usual visitors from Walton and Te Ngutu arrived early and enjoyed a quiet drink in the clubhouse on Friday afternoon. Missing from the Walton contingent was long time member Murray Munro. As a tribute to Muzz and other passed golfers, who have played in our Queen’s Birthday tournament over the years, a new trophy was played for and presented. This trophy is to recognise the winner of the stableford competition on the Sunday afternoon. This year’s winner was none other than our club captain, Wayne White. Also arriving for the tournament was the Barltrop families, who have had a long association with the Feilding Golf Club. The Barltrops provided spirited competition for our regular participants. In the semi finals of the championship group, Master’s player Michael Barltrop found himself surrounded

FIREWOOD AT Carterton The big talk over the last month has been about the gales which swept through the Wairarapa. Carterton Golf Club lost a few trees which mostly didn’t effect the ‘playability’. The one hole which is the subject of a rethink is the dog leg 7th. The trees which formed the dog leg were blown down (and they were not small). The stumps etc have now been cleared and work is underway to ‘rebuild’ an obstacle which will make the hole a dog leg once more. The good side was the Club now has plenty of firewood for sale.

St Clair number 1, Abby Crawford, 1 down playing the 18th needed to get up and down on the last to win the hole and halve her match but failed to do so resulting in Taieri’s Dawn Hyslop winning 1 up. It was the same in the match between the number 2s but with Sharon Keith (St Clair) making a regulation par on the last her result was stretched and she ended up winning 2 up. After the 18 holes, the game was tied 2-all and this required a look at the rule book. It stipulated that in the event of a tie, the result was decided on the number 1s match. This therefore was won by Taieri Lakes and so Taieri Lakes were declared the winner. Taieri Lakes Midweek will now go forward representing Metro at the Otago District Pennant Final to be played in Central Otago at the end of September. The results of the metro section womens pennant finals played at Chisholm Park on Sunday 15th were: St Clair Weekend 2 – Taieri Lakes Midweek 2. Millbrook installs stateof-the-art GPS system Queenstown’s award-winning Millbrook Resort is once again leading the way in world-class guest experiences investing in a state-of-the-art GPS system for its brand new fleet of golf carts. Cementing its position as New Zealand’s best hotel and the leading golf resort in Australasia, the significant venture makes the resort the first club in the country to use such technology. The cloud-based Golf Pilot system, created by GPS Systems International, uses Samsung TAB devices and employs cutting-edge technology to enhance players’ golf game while also providing some nifty safety features for management. Each of the resort’s 50 Yamaha carts is now fitted with a slick white Samsung Golf Pilot unit which is mounted to the front windscreen and links to the main computer dashboard in the resort’s Pro Shop. Once players set-off for their round the visually striking and interactive Golf Pilot system kicks into action and starts tracking the cart’s location through the resort. It enables players to see where they are on the course, highlights course no-go areas, shows pro-tips on how best to play the hole and players can measure the distance to any point of interest including bunkers and the pin on the green. Back at the pro shop, the interactive and real-time map shows management where each of the carts are at any given time, meaning they can move slow players on and even call players back if they’re unlikely to finish before dark. To ensure players stay on track while on course an audible warning sounds whenever a cart approaches an area where it’s not allowed to go such as greens or a nature area. Course overview maps highlight course play areas to prevent players inadvertently losing their way. The innovative service makes a game of

golf at the resort even more interactive and engaging. Other unique features include live local weather and radar maps, twoway communication and messaging between the cart and pro shop – ideal for providing information and assistance, severe weather updates and answering player’s questions or responding to an on-course emergency. The system offers additional services for guests such as video or static adverts shown during play which highlight the resort’s additional activities like restaurants, the spa and accommodation, and can even show special offers that players can take advantage of. Millbrook Resort head of golf Brian Spicer said the system was an “exciting development” for the resort. “There’s been a significant increase in the availability of GPS devices for golf courses over the past five years. We’re always looking at creative ways of being innovative and Golf Pilot is a great system that takes Millbrook to another level technology wise,” said Mr Spicer. 
