The Western Cape as a golf tourist destination has grown in leaps and bounds over the last decade or so, thanks mostly to the addition of several golf estates outside of greater Cape Town. Unfortunately, at the same time, Cape Town’s traditional golf clubs have stagnated a little – falling behind the new construction techniques and progressive designs of the big-name designers’ masterpieces. Near the CBD the popular nine-hole course called Metropolitan made way for the multi6

Golfers’ Guide

billion rand Greenpoint Stadium built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In its place, however, Mark Muller has designed a new and impressive nine-hole layout, which will use up much of the Greenpoint Common. ‘Met’ as it was affectionately called, was very popular with visitors and locals alike and the ‘new Met’ is sure to be a worthy replacement. It is centrally located and, with its magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain to distract from any wayward golf shots it is a great experience.

Feature Destination Towards the suburbs of Cape Town and enroute to the airport, there are a number of Cape Town’s venerable golf clubs: Mowbray, Rondebosch and, a little further afield, King David. Mowbray has hosted numerous national and Open championships and, while its layout may seem benign and short by today’s big-hitting standards, it is still well protected by the south-easter which can whip through this part of the peninsula. Its new greens are unusual in that they feature paspalum, a grass more accustomed to year-round temperate climate of KwaZulu-Natal, so they go dormant in the Cape’s winter months. While their desperate brown colour may look a little strange, they nevertheless retain their true roll ensuring year-round playability. Moving further south towards Cape Point, one reaches South Africa’s oldest golf club, Royal Cape, founded more than 120 years ago in Wynberg. Well worth a visit, this parkland course has also hosted numerous professional events including the SA Open and, more recently, the Vodacom Players Championship.

Cape Town’s only estate course, Steenberg, which was designed by Peter Matkovich, lies in the shadow of Constantiaberg. Opened in the late ’90s, this course has magnificent views across the Constantia vineyards are some challenging holes on what is otherwise a fair layout with excellent greens. Further south along the peninsula, there are two more 18-hole layouts well worth a visit – Westlake and Clovelly. Both enjoy the fresh winds that whip throughout the peninsula, but they are both exceptional. Westlake is built on the side of the mountain, while Clovelly is situated in the valley just short of Fish Hoek. For a crazy golfing experience, visit the naval town of Simon’s Town with its bizarre, windswept nine-hole course. Just keep your wits about you as the layout has several intersecting playing corridors, which can mean unexpected flying golf balls for the unwary. In the northern suburbs of Cape Town, there are several courses with fine parkland layouts such as Bellville, Parow and Durbanville, while on the coast, Milnerton and Atlantic Beach

Feature Destination both have magnificent views of Table Mountain across Table Bay. Further up the west coast, the Langebaan Country Estate has another Gary Player-designed course, with iconic sea shell bunkers and a 19th hole in front of the clubhouse that is lit by floodlights. Winding amongst natural rock formations, wild flowers and small game, the Langebaan course is an unforgettable experience.

sign that compares with his best work anywhere in the world. It is now home to the SA Open Championship, producing two popular local winners in James Kingston and Richard Sterne. Paarl itself has a fine golf club which, with a housing estate component (Boschenmeer) has been extended to a 27-hole facility with design input from local golf hero and multiple winner on the PGA Tour, David Frost.

The Western Cape is, of course, famed for its winelands region, some 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Cape Town. Golf has not been forgotten in this idyllic region and there are numerous magnificent layouts set among the vineyards with imposing mountain backdrops. The university town of Stellenbosch is South Africa’s oldest town, full of historical importance and is also the centre of the wine-growing region. Its course has a wonderful parkland layout that has been home to several professional championships over the years. In October 2006, together with nearby De Zalze Golf Estate, Stellenbosch was the host venue of the World Amateur Team Championship, the world’s most important amateur team event.

Along the coast towards the east, there are several attractive seaside holiday towns, many of which feature excellent golf courses. About an hour-and-a-half outside of Cape Town, Hermanus has, in the months of July to September, some of the finest shore-based whale watching to be found anywhere in the world. On the road to Hermanus there is the impressive Arabella Golf Estate and its luxurious Western Cape Hotel and Spa. Arabella’s layout is rated as the best course in the Western Cape and even features in Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses outside of America – a fine accolade indeed.

In neighbouring Somerset West, the Gary Player-designed Erinvale course hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf in which the South African team of Ernie Els and Wayne Westner were popular victors. More recently, the SA Open Championship, the world’s second oldest national championship has been played there with hometown favourite Trevor Immelman winning consecutive titles. Paarl and Franschhoek are picturesque towns, also very much part of the winelands regions. Between these two, Jack Nicklaus has created Pearl Valley, an impressive signature de-

The Western Cape, with its myriad tourist attractions is South Africa’s most popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. The V&A Waterfront is South Africa’s most visited attraction, while Cape Town’s natural beauty attracts millions each year to its famed Table Mountain and Cape Point. For the golfer, there is more than enough choice of top-rated golf courses to suit all skills levels and a variety of hotels and alternative accommodation to suit all tastes. The only difficulty is making that choice and finding the time to indulge oneself. If only everything was that difficult.

Secure country living in Langebaan Bev Hermanson

In the early days of the Cape, when pioneers were pushing the boundaries on the lookout for adrenalin-pumping raw adventure and high society was elegant and genteel, the West Coast was still decidedly rustic. Once traversed by over 200 different kinds of animals and the people of the Khoi San tribe, this area is rich in natural heritage. Golfers’ Guide

Saldanha Bay, on the western coastline, is the deepest and largest natural harbour in the southern hemisphere and the safest in South Africa, but for centuries, the lack of fresh water prevented large scale commercial and industrial activity here. This is the main reason why the area has remained relatively untouched by mankind’s obsessive drive to conquer and modernize. Situated on the southern side of the bay, the town of Langebaan has become a favourite holiday destination, particularly for water

enthusiasts and nature lovers. Only 100 km from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town’s city centre, Langebaan is a breath of fresh air. Originally established as a whaling station back in 1922, Langebaan remained a quaint village overlooking the clear blue waters of its lagoon for more than half a century, before it was granted the municipal status of being a town in 1976. It wasn’t too long afterwards that the town was graced with its first golf course and a Mediterranean-styled casino resort called Club Mykonos.

Ahead of its time The eighties and nineties were turbulent times for South Africa and perhaps not an appropriate time for this modest town to begin flourishing. The golf course was part of a residential estate launched by Owen Wiggins in the early nineties and the entire development had a number of false starts, eventually being run by a curator for about 3 or 4 years, before it was taken over by the current developers. Named the Langebaan Country Estate, the main attraction was the 27 hole golf course designed by Bill Kerr.

The purchase of the 400 ha estate seemed like a steal at the time. The R2,1-million paid was the only cash offer that the curator received and the property was sold to a small syndicate that included a retired hotelier and a retired chairman of a large company. When the current CEO, Craig Scott, returned from overseas, he joined the syndicate to help them kick-start the resurrection of the estate. It’s been a ‘journey’ that Scott has tackled with passion and enthusiasm. “Buying a half developed estate for a good price was one thing. Developing it was the challenge,” he

Golfers’ Guide

19

Estate Living says. “The size of the estate is such that the landscaping alone could bankrupt you.” Getting back to basics was the solution.

Discouraging the speculators Less than 90 minutes from Cape Town, Langebaan Country Estate is ideal for commuters who prefer country living and for those that can afford to have a second home. In 2003, the first phase of the new development was approved. This entailed the sale of 250 stands and 100 group houses. With an

average stand price of R120 000, it’s small wonder that this phase sold out within a month. In early 2004, phase 2 was launched. This phase comprised 187 stands and 50 group houses. Later the same year, phase 3 came on stream, offering 240 stands at an average stand price of R240 000. At these prices, the interest from speculators was brisk. However, the developers were looking for greater stability and in 2005, when Scott took over the financial management, plans were put in place to change the marketing approach to attract ‘stayers’ rather than ‘passers-through’.

Re-designing the golf course One of the first decisions taken under the new regime was to re-design the golf course and a deal was struck with the Black Knight Group for Gary Player to do the design. Being a coastal area, this lent itself to having a typical links-style course with grasses and plants suited to the terrain and climatic conditions. “It was a big decision to change the course,” says Scott. “Back in the 80s when the original course was designed, the approach to build-

ing bunkers was different. No one had even heard of climate change and conservation of the environment was not a big issue.” For the upgrade, four of the existing holes were turned into a mashe course. Four new holes were then added to the golf course. All the grass on the greens was replaced with an indigenous Paspalum Seaisle 2000, a salinetolerant grass. The new course was opened on September 1, 2007 and just over two years down the line, the course is coming into its own as the grasses and landscaping mature.

“It’s a challenge to design a course that is still playable when the wind is howling – which is a common occurrence on the West Coast – and the design that Gary Player came up with is excellent. We have lots of favourable feedback from players, so we know it’s playable under all conditions.”

Environmental issues Much of the land on the estate had been used as farmland prior to its conversion to residential use with the result that the soil had become depleted. Rehabilitating the soil was only one of the challenges, though. The terms of compliance specified by the Depart-

Golfers’ Guide

25

Estate Living

ment of Environmental Affairs became more and more stringent with every phase that was launched. “In 2003, the conditions that we had to comply with ran over 6 pages. By the time we got to 2005, we were working through 18 pages of regulations,” Scott continues. Their attention to detail and their commitment to protecting the environment paid off, as in 2005, Langebaan Country Estate was the only golf estate that got the nod out of a group of 30 golf estates in the Western Cape that had been seeking approval.

Mark Duckett of Cape Lowland was appointed to oversee the environmental compliance procedures and a rigid set of rules was compiled for contractors, with hefty fines imposed on those that didn’t toe the line. Central to the environmental guidelines is the rehabilitation requirement. Anything that is disturbed has to be brought back to its original condition. Only veld and fynbos plants indigenous to the area may be used for landscaping and if there are lawns, these have to be kept to a minimum and the grasses used have to be drought-resistant. In addition, boundary

Golfers’ Guide

27

Estate Living

walls and hard definitions to the properties are taboo. The result is a free-flowing effect of veld styled gardens all blending together. “The plants that we specify for use in the landscaping have been approved by the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens as being appropriate for the area, but it has been quite a process to get the home owners to understand and appreciate how the plants behave through the seasons. We’re very strict about not allowing alien plants. The West Coast is one of the most diverse fynbos regions in the

country and we have to make sure that we don’t disrupt the ecosystem,” Scott continues. One of the main challenges, other than the types of plants to be used in this semi desert environment, was water management. Element Consulting Engineers, involved with the development of the estate since 1998, had two situations that had to be controlled. Firstly, the developers opted not to concentrate the storm water. From an environmental perspective, it was important to get the rainwater into the soil as soon as possible and

Golfers’ Guide

29

Estate Living

not allow the water to run off into the sea. Due to the residential element of the estate, there were many more hard surfaces than before, which meant a significant amount of water had to be spread over a smallish area without damaging the surroundings. “To counter the effects of water coming off roofs and the roads, we made sure that the gradients were mild. We kept the houses away from any natural storm water flow and

through the teamwork of the urban planners, architects and engineers, we made sure that there was never a threat of the houses and service areas flooding,” says Francois Ryke of Element Consulting Engineers. “The other thing that we had to be careful of was managing the quality of any water that ran off into the lagoon. Being a conservation area, emotions run high when it comes to managing the impact on the environment.”

Golfers’ Guide

31

In addition to coping with the storm water requirements, Element Consulting Engineers was involved with the planning and implementation of the irrigation system for the golf course. In keeping with the ‘green approach’ of the development, treated effluent is used to irrigate the golf course. With the treatment plant operating 24/7, water had to be stored for use as and when required. Initially the runoff from the plant was too low to provide sufficient water for irrigation purposes and it had to be stored for use at a later stage. This involved the construction of dams and water

features, as well as an interlinking of grey water and storm water feeds to provide a suitable network for the irrigation. On the electrical side, Element Consulting Engineers was commissioned to assist with the lighting on the estate. “To make sure that the estate maintained a wholesome country atmosphere, we had to make sure that the lighting did not produce an unpleasant haze over the development. All the lighting is low level down lighting to reduce the light pollution of the area” Ryke says.

Built to blend The main residential activities at Langebaan Country Estate revolve around Ellefsen Village, which is positioned between the 9th and 18th fairways. This village comprises freestanding houses, duplex townhouses and lock-up and go apartments, all embracing the philosophy of green living. Freestanding plot and plan homes are situated on golf course fronting stands, with some overlooking the spectacular water features, while others catch glimpses of the lagoon.

One of the main contractors on site is Keyway Construction. Offering a turnkey service, this firm operates with a core of ten permanent staff and a selection of sub-contractors. Having handled over 70% of the work at the estate to date, the firm is able to negotiate excellent discounts from the suppliers, which are passed on to the clients where possible. The quality of workmanship is monitored carefully so that the standards of building at the estate are maintained.

Golfers’ Guide

37

“Being away from the mainstream up on the West Coast, we had to pay close attention to getting the right skills. This area has predominantly a fisherman culture, which is not necessarily suited to what is required for building. We always source quality sub-contractors with whom we can build a good long term business relationship, ensuring quality and good productivity,” says John Smith of Keyway Construction. “Our head office is based at the estate so we are on hand at all times. With quite a mix of people having bought in the estate, including investors from overseas, we have to make sure that the standards are kept to a high level, to meet their needs.” There is a strict manual of architectural guidelines. All the residential units are available in a variety of designs with high quality finishes,

Estate Living including travertine flooring, stainless steel balustrades, granite tops in the kitchens and built-in braais on the patios. The first three phases of the estate were put together following a low density philosophy, but since then, the government has changed its emphasis to enforcing higher densities in developments, to prevent urban sprawl from gobbling up the remaining available land. This has meant an increase from the 1800 units initially planned to 3000 units once the development is completed.

“We have identified the best areas for building and have densified these areas so that we still have corridors of open space,” Scott elaborates. “To reduce the impact that the buildings have on the surroundings, we encourage the home owners to go for colours that blend with the surroundings. This means steering the aesthetics away from the typical West Coast style of white walls, grey roofs and the traditional stoep, which is actually quite harsh on the eye. We have specified that roof tiles must be beiges and browns with a natural clay look and wall colours should be earthy.”

developers are confident will do well, even in the prevailing climate. Some of the best areas, particularly on the slopes, are still to be developed (with great sensitivity and consideration of the ridge lines) and a site has been reserved for a school.

Surrounding attractions The most popular activities in Langebaan are sailing, wind and kite surfing, angling and bathing in the lagoon. Club Mykonos offers squash and tennis, mini golf, indoor and outdoor swimming, in addition to gaming in the casino and gym and sauna facilities. Tours of the area can be taken on horseback, quad- and mountain bikes and game viewing is offered

at the Elandsfontein Private Game Reserve. Bird watching. The area is a world renowned birding spot with migratory birds coming from as far as Siberia, Greenland and northern Europe – in fact, the Langebaan lagoon has been proclaimed a World Ramsar site (the site deemed to be of global significance to wetland bird species). There are a number of hides overlooking various areas of the lagoon, from which birds can be observed, without disturbing them. The islands near the mouth of Saldanha Bay are also worth a visit. You can get there by boat under the guidance of a park guide to see the breeding colonies of Cape Gannets, penguins, cormorants and other marine birds. West Coast National Park. The lagoon is also the focal point of the West Coast National

Park that was established in 1986 to protect the wetlands, salt marshes and indigenous fynbos and fauna in and around the area. The West Coast Fossil Park. Situated on the Langebaan Road, the West Coast National Park has paleontological remains found at the site dating back to between five and seven million years. Over 200 vertebrate and invertebrate animal species were uncovered during phosphate mining operations in the early 90s and a 14ha area has since been

demarcated within the former mine property and declared a national heritage site. Run by Isiko Museums of Cape Town, this site is recognised as containing possibly the greatest diversity of five million year old fossils in the world. Excavations are ongoing and visitors can tour the digs by arrangement. Wine routes. If you are going to be spending any length of time at the Langebaan Country Estate, do take time out to go on the Swartland and Olifants River Wine Routes. There

Between July and September, the world famous Namaqualand daisies and other varieties of flora come out in full bloom. Langebaan is at the southernmost tip of this district and actually has an awesome display of its own. However another hour and a half to five hours away, you will see vistas that make the travelling well worth the trip. Whale watching. From winter to early spring, the Southern Right Whale can be spotted in the area. From Namibia on the West Coast, right around the Cape of Good Hope to beyond Hermanus, there is the possibility of view-

ing a wide variety of these magnificent marine mammals. The West Coast Lagoon Festival. Held every autumn at Club Mykonos, this exciting weekend festival includes activities for the kids, such as puppet shows, crafts and mini Olympics, as well as music events, lagoon sports and the popular Silver Falcon Air Show. For culture lovers, the works of local artists can be viewed at the Bay Gallery and there are a number of restaurants, eateries and coffee shops in the town, as well as a variety of stores that sell everything from seafood, groceries and hardware, to sports and holiday equipment.

One could ask: what makes a golf estate like Pearl Valley so successful from an investment point of view, especially when there is a severe downturn in the property market worldwide? There are several answers to this question and they make for an excellent study when it comes to choosing an estate in which to invest. Firstly, the Western Cape (or, more accurately, the greater Cape Town area) does not have an oversupply of residential

golf estates. Pearl Valley is one of only a few ‘marquee-name signature design’ courses in the area – and there is no doubt that this has an effect on the desirability of the property around the course. Pearl Valley is maturing – the estate was officially opened six years ago, which means that the majority of large-scale construction is completed. There is no longer the constant din of cement mixers, bulldozers and jackhammers pounding away to disturb the peace! Design and construction guidelines are strict and processes put in place have ensured that this necessary phase in the lifespan of a newish estate is as smooth as possible. A building contractor’s Code of

Conduct must be strictly adhered to and large deposits are required by approved contractors before they move onto the estate. Pearl Valley is owned by Leisurecorp, the Dubai-based company that also owns the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, and it is managed by world-leader Troon Golf. This brings a level of service that is world-class and a high level of commitment to members and residents. Troy Hart is Pearl Valley’s general manager and he is understandably passionate and upbeat about the future. “While it has been a challenging year for the property industry, Pearl Valley continues to move forward in demand with approximately

R80 million rand of property being transferred this year to date, with stand prices ranging between R3.7 to R4.5 million,” he explains. “The estate is achieving year-on-year asset growth and is receiving increased volumes of enquiries predominately from the local and national sectors – people who are looking at settling in the winelands valley because of the lifestyle and high level of broad-based infrastructure including schools, universities and various activities within close proximity.”

While he is pleased with this continued growth, he is also very serious when it comes to sustainability and believes it is vital to meet certain objectives when it comes to responsible environmental practice and water usage: “We need to educate our residents regarding best practice when it comes to recycling bottles, plastics and paper and with respect to water usage. We need to investigate energy management systems that will ensure that we are doing our bit for the environment – this is a fundamental part of living in a community.”

It is this sort of outlook that is encouraging young families to settle in this forward thinking community, with many families ‘trying before they buy’ by renting homes on the estate. Amazingly, the conversion rate of renters to owners is more than 50% - a remarkable statistic. Pearl Valley’s celebrated golf course has been the home to the South African Open Championship for the past couple of years and December this year will see the world’s

second oldest Open return for the third time. “The SA open has been excellent for Pearl Valley,” explains Hart, “as it has helped to reinforce the Pearl Valley brand, which was already strong. It has really put us in the international spotlight and we have seen some 3000 rounds being played by international tourists as a direct result.” That is exposure that money just can’t buy. Living on a golf estate is a particularly attractive option when it comes to wide open spaces with excellent security. When that golf estate includes a course designed by one of the world’s most legendary golfers and it is situated in the heart of one of the most beautiful winelands areas anywhere in the world, it fast goes from an attractive option to the only option. Pearl Valley’s residents do agree.

Golfers’ Guide

Since its opening in 2000, this club was quick to reap rewards. Originally known as the Spier Country Club, it was renamed the De Zalze Golf Club in December 2003, when the new clubhouse was opened. The name ‘De Zalze’ was chosen by combining the names of the adjacent farms that had been developed in the region by early wine farmers, namely Kleine Zalze, Groote Zalze and De Vleie. The historical buildings on the estate date back to 1838.

The 6385 metre Par 73 course was designed by renowned golf course architect, Peter Matkovich, who made the most of the stunning setting amongst the mountains and vineyards, while placing a premium on accuracy. It offers a fine mix of parkland holes, with water features on several of the holes. The oak-lined Blaauwklippen River, that winds its way through the golf estate, comes into play at various intervals. Selected to host the 2006 World Amateur Team Championships, De Zalze was soon moved from 44th to 24th in the Golf Digest Top 100 Courses and was recently placed 13th in the Top 30 Best Conditioned Courses. It also received a serviceorientated ‘Five-Star Golf Experience’ Award, managed by Compleat Golfer, joining only 14 other courses out of over 450 courses in South Africa to be given this honour. De Zalze is also the first golf course in the world to be recognised for adherence to Fair Trade principles and criteria and has been Fair Trade certified. Facilities at the club include a warm-up driving range, golfers lounge and bar, a golf lifestyle shop, a halfway house and a terrace restaurant. Golfers’ Guide

Together with Kleine Zalze, Spier redesigned the estate, naming it the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate development. Their vision was to make it one of the most sought after golf real estate properties in the Cape Winelands and South Africa.

Golfers’ Guide

The West Coast of South Africa is regarded as one of the most beautiful parts of the country – and rightly so. Unspoiled beaches, wild flowers and a lovely climate make this the perfect location for one of the country’s top golf courses at the Langebaan Country Estate. This spectacular course plays 6359m from the championship tees (6994 yards), 5875m to 6071m from the club- and senior tees, and 5202m from the ladies tees with an overall course rating of 71.

The course offers so much more than the usual, what with its iconic sea shell bunkers, the famous 19th hole (yes it’s a real hole), popular driving range and putting green – not to mention the many entertainment options at Langebaan Country Estate, which can be toured in comfort via the Estate’s golf carts. These regularly flow between Ellefsen Village and the popular Estate Clubhouse, where golfers, family and friends enjoy the spectacular views over a fresh cocktail or a cold beer, with and some of the best cuisine north of Cape Town. Big news, too, is the planned 18-hole mashie course, currently being engineered around four course holes left unused after the recent radical re-deign of the Course and Clubhouse.

Golfers’ Guide

Langebaan Golf Estates

For its redesign, the legendary Gary Player was charged with turning the Langebaan course into a high-quality yet truly testing layout and the result is an incontestable success. The course has more than a hint of Player’s design philosophy, with well-positioned bunkers and his typical routing for all levels of golfers. Throw in some amazing natural rock formations, the large water feature separating the 10th and 18th fairways, the local wild flowers and protected springbok and birdlife, and it is clear that playing golf at the Langebaan Country Estate is an unforgettable experience.

Golfers’ Guide

Pearl Valley Golf Estates near Franschhoek in the Western Cape features the second signature design in South Africa by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. Officially opened in late 2003, the course has become recognised as one of the Western Cape’s – and South Africa’s – premier layouts. Laid out on what was once a ‘safari park’, Pearl Valley is framed by the magnificent Drakenstein range of mountains, providing breathtaking views on all sides. The course is long from the championship tees, but a number of different teeing options ensure that it is challenging and enjoyable for all levels of golfers. The course is designed taking into account the twoprevailingwinds–thenorth-westerpredominant in the winter and the notorious summer south-easter that can whip through the valley.

All the par fives are achievable for the longer hitters, but as with the par fours, accuracy from the tee is often rewarded far more than simply going for length. The par-four 17th is a perfect example of this, where strategy in relation to placement on the fairway can mean the difference between a par or birdie and a shockingly high number on the card. Pearl Valley’s greatest asset is its mix of holes – plenty of difficulty, but plenty of risk-and-reward and holes that allow the golfer to take a deep breath and regroup. Combine this with year-round perfection in conditioning and you have a not-to-be-missed golfing experience in one of most beautiful locations in the world.

Golfers’ Guide

Pearl Valley Golf Estates

There are several feature holes around this immaculate layout, which is – typical of a Nicklaus Signature design – generously wide off the tee with numerous bunkers awaiting less wellstruck shots. The par-three 4th is a splendid short hole, with water in play all the way on the right of the green. For the cautious approach, a large bunker awaits on the left, ensuring that a par on this hole is an excellent score.

With two very distinct but different layouts, Randpark offers golfers of varying ability an unforgettable experience on two of the finest and best manicured courses SA has to offer. The two courses together must surely boast the best collection of short holes in the country.

Randpark course Host to the 1995 & 2000 SA Opens, the Randpark course is amongst the top championship courses in the country. At 7015m from the ‘tips’, this course is one of the longest in SA and challenges all the best golfers in the country to ‘tame it’.

Windsor course

With a public, two-tiered, floodlit driving range and a newly renovated clubhouse with 5 function rooms and a boardroom, Randpark has facilities for all requirements. It is one of the finest locations to enjoy an a la carte breakfast or lunch. Sitting on the covered deck overlooking the golf course, you won’t believe you are in a sprawling metropolis. For accommodation, Randpark now boasts a new 5-star hotel which is operated by The Guvon Hotel Group. The club has been rated as a top host for corporate golf days and voted ‘Most improved Clubhouse’ for 2008. Golfers’ Guide

Simola is one of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations. Set amidst the rolling hills surrounding the quaint town of Knysna, this course is the first Jack Nicklaus signature course on the Garden Route. In tune with the Nicklaus design philosophy of allowing the layout to follow the natural lie of the land, the Simola course offers challenging and rewarding golf amidst spectacular scenery. Set below the ridgelines, spanning two natural amphitheatres, this course is surprisingly free from the wind that so often plagues coastal courses. Fairways flow with the natural undulating contours of the terrain and the unusual configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s adds a new dimension to the game. Every hole has exceptional views, either out across the Knysna Lagoon all the way to the Knysna Heads and beyond, or over the picturesque Knysna River to the Outeniqua Mountains.

The golf club is a non-listed public company with a limited 1000 shares and each golf membership is a fully tradable share that becomes an appreciating asset. The choice of memberships – founder, corporate, individual and family members – is available to both residents and non-residents. Members enjoy reciprocity and preferential rates at the fellow Jack Nicklaus signature courses of Pecanwood, St Francis Links and Pearl Valley and founder members also receive preferential rates at Pinnacle Point.

Course Reviews Florida, USA The 7043 yard course at the Baytree National Golf Links is located on Florida’s famous Space Coast, close to the beautiful Cocoa Beach and not far from Disney World in Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center. This semi-private par 72 course features a superb signature design by the Black Knight himself, Gary Player. One of Player’s techniques in designing a golf course is to use the topography of the land to determine how the course is to be laid out. Mr Player’s design makes the most of incorporating the lakes and marshes into all aspects of the game and the layout features intriguing split fairways and risk-reward doglegs.

The course offers spectacular tests of both strategy and playing abilities. The par-5s are all roughly 490 to 510 yards long from the men’s tees, while the par-3s are around 200 yards or more from the furthest tees. In addition to offering the complete golf experience through a great course layout and PGA Tour quality course conditioning with greens that are quick but fair year round, the club has a practice facility that consists of a large putting green, chipping green and a driving range, a fully stocked golf shop, a golf academy and a clubhouse with a deli-style restaurant and bar. Baytree National has attained a 4 star Golf Digest rating, has received a high ranking by the Zagat Survey and has won the Best of Brevard for a number of years.

Golfers’ Guide

The 18-hole Palm Course at Palmas del Mar is a resort-styled course that offers a tournament-level challenge to any standard of golfer. This 6600 yard course was originally designed by champion golfer Gary Player and later renovated by Rees Jones. The water hazards, strategically placed bunkers and undulating greens are enhanced by the breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and tropical landscape that includes marshes, jungle and sections of head high reeds. Mr Player’s basic approach to the design of the course was not disturbed in any way by Jones’ renovation. The greens are relatively small and taking into account the fresh winds and coastal conditions, no shot can be taken for granted. Both with tiered greens, the 12th hole is a hard par-4 and the 13th hole is a 250-yard par-3. The signature 14th hole is a 418-yard par-4, which drops 200 feet against a backdrop of the ocean.

Palmas del Mar Palm Course

For variety, there is an alternative course, the Rees Jones-designed Flamboyan Course which is also part of the country club. Other facilities include practice and short game areas, a putting green and a private instruction tee. The clubhouse has a golf shop, separate locker rooms for members and resort guests, bag storage, a members’ lounge, a gourmet restaurant, bar and meeting rooms. The Palmas del Mar Country Club is part of the Palmas del Mar estate, which is a ‘planned’ community development. The resort itself has a casino, offers a variety of accommodation and has no fewer that 18 eateries. There is an extensive tennis centre with 20 tennis courts, as well as volleyball and basketball courts, a fitness centre, an equestrian centre, nine freshwater pools, a scuba diving centre and a 200slip marina that is used as the departure point for snorkeling, sailing, kayaking and deep sea fishing excursions.
