CATCH SPRING FEVER!
D
esert warmth paired with morning tee times and afternoon baseball are one of the biggest reasons it pays to vacation in Mesa this spring. The city has hosted spring training for 60 years and is the beloved winter home to the Chicago Cubs – America’s team. Loyal baseball fans have been making pilgrimages to this Southwest hot spot each March to watch pitchers and catchers warm up on pristine fields, but it’s the
other fields of green strewn throughout Mesa that get sunseekers excited. With more than 40 golf courses within city limits (part of the 200+ courses in the Phoenix-metro area), it’s not uncommon to see folks rise with the sun and tee off early just so they can hit the ballpark in time for a Cubs match-up. With most games starting at 1:05 p.m., visitors know that with a little strategic planning they can make sure both leisure activities get equal billing on the day’s itinerary. Spring training in Arizona is hosted 6
006-009.Cactus League.indd 1
each year by the Cactus League Association which is made up of 15 Major League Baseball teams playing in 10 stadiums throughout the Greater Phoenix area. The Cactus League’s popularity began decades ago but with all teams now training in one central area, the league boasts some noticeable advantages compared to the sport’s counterparts in Florida. Less travel time, with the average distance between the parks no more than a half-hour car ride, is by far the most recognized attribute and part of the reason the league thrives. But, just as the new crop of ball players yearn to warm up and practice their swing here in Valley of the Sun – so do the legions of travelers that seek respite from winter in Arizona. When it comes time for this desert duo pairing of golf and baseball to converge in Mesa, you know it’s also time to dust off your clubs, warm up and get swinging. FOR DECADES, Arizona has hosted Major League Baseball in March promising an incredible month of sunshine, desert beauty and warm hospitality paired with America’s favorite pastime. We all know it’s the nearly 1.5 million fans that make spring training come alive and we are glad you are here once again to cheer on your favorite team! Each year, the Cactus League measures the beneďŹ ts of Spring Training in Arizona and last season alone you helped bring $348 million in economic activity to the Grand Canyon state!
Take a look around any ballpark and you will see many of Arizona’s community leaders volunteering their time to ensure your Spring Training experience is enjoyable. As the league continues to grow with new offerings, let us know how we can help keep Spring Training in Arizona a memorymaking event for all baseball fans. Play Ball!

Mesa Las Sendas Golf Course
Golf Course Gems Can Be Found Throughout This East Valley Golfer’s Paradise
W
hether you’re a pro or just learning your swing, hit the links in Mesa for some of the best golf in the Southwest. Arizona’s thirdlargest city (after Phoenix and Tucson) is home to world-renowned golf featuring breathtaking views of sweeping vistas set against the natural beauty of rugged mountains and blue Western skies. Top course designers have all had their chance at designing this East Valley golf destination, from Gary Panks and Robert Trent Jones, Jr. to Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye, to name but a few. And, with near perfect weather every winter, it’s possible to enjoy the sport all season long. More than 40 golf courses are within a half-hour drive of downtown Mesa, offering a variety of options from challenging desert golf to traditional parkland play.
GOLF COURSE GEMS… Challenging target-style desert golf paired with winding, lush green fairways add to the allure of golf in the Southwest, and Mesa has its fair share of course gems. Las Sendas Golf Club features breathtaking views of Red Mountain and the Superstition mountain range – an unsurpassed 10

backdrop to the storied Sonoran Desert. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course has matured into one of the most beautiful courses in Mesa, ranking as the 12th most challenging and one of the Top 50 courses in the nation, according to two ZAGAT Surveys. Longbow Golf Club in east Mesa has also earned its share of praise after being recognized by Golfweek magazine as one of the Top 20 courses in Arizona in their Best You Can Play, State by State ranking. The intrigue and shot making choices that players will face here are infinite. VERY SUPERSTITIOUS Playing a round at Superstition Springs Golf Club will surprise, as the course offers up one of Arizona’s most challenging layouts. This championship track measures more than 7,000 yards from the back tees, is a former PGA Tour qualifying site, and is consistently rated among the Southwest’s finest golf experiences. Course architect Gary H. Nash showcased a series of lakes and got creative with bunkering, ensuring a unique playing experience throughout the course. One of the newest golf experiences

available for Mesa guests is the awardwinning Superstition Mountain Golf Club, which now offers a public-play option. Located at the base of the Superstition Mountains, the club is home to two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses with immaculate fairways and world-class greens. Guests now have daily-fee access to the club as an “Associate Member.” The club alternates one course each day, allowing non-member guests access to premium tee times at the private golf club. Both the Prospector and Lost Gold courses boast breathtaking views of the legendary Superstition Mountain range and high Sonoran Desert terrain, and have earned rave reviews from the many professional golfers who call the Valley of the Sun home. The Prospector Course also was featured in Golfweek magazine’s 2009 list of 100 Best Residential Courses in the country. CATERING TO CANADIANS Mesa has long been a second home and winter vacation mecca for visitors seeking sunshine, and the market getting the most attention is Canada. Many of Mesa’s courses have close bonds with our friends from the Great White North, and have for years as more and more investors look to the East Valley. At Red Mountain Ranch Country Club, winter residents don their best red and white attire for the Annual Canadian Open Tournament (Feb. 16, 2012). Players begin and end the day with the singing of “Oh Canada,” with lots of golf, food, friends and laughter sandwiched in between. Few realize that Las Sendas Golf Club at the north end of the city is primarily Canadian owned. Two years ago, former NHL player Wayne McBean, along with his brother Lloyd (who hails from Calgary, AB), purchased the club. Home to Mesa’s only prime steakhouse, Bogey’s, the views from the patio 2012 ISSUE 1

alone are worth a visit. The Canadian flag is on display year-round for Mesa residents and the part-time Canadian players that return south each winter. ROUNDING IT OUT… For those wanting to round out their golf experience in Mesa, convenient municipal courses offer affordable opportunities to pick up the clubs and get outside, while the city’s many master-planned communities have public golf clubs and run fun events and tournaments during the winter and spring seasons. City-run Dobson Ranch Golf Course has twice been voted Best Public Golf Course, and avid fans appreciate the excellent course conditions and playability. As recently as 2009, Golf Digest ranked Dobson Ranch as one of the best municipal golf courses in all 50 states, and selected it as the number one course in Arizona. Features include a lighted driving range and practice facility, and PGA golf instruction is offered for players of all ages and abilities. The Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau offers several affordable golf vacation packages and deals featuring golf courses throughout the Phoenix-metro area paired with Mesa hotels and resorts. Unforgettable Desert Golf
Sonoran Golf Course-Omni Resort
I
f superior golf is your number-one vacation criteria, swing into the splendor of the real Southwest and experience a Tucson golf getaway fit for a champion. The choices and challenges in Tucson captivate even the most discriminating golfers. Some of the sport’s biggest stars – Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Lehman, Arnold Palmer – have either competed on or designed Metro Tucson golf courses. The legacy of professional golf tournaments played here, from the first Tucson Open in 1945 to the current World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, chronicles a longtime love and respect for the game. Over the years, the rugged desert terrain spreading out beneath the Santa Catalinas, Rincons, Tortolita and Tucson Mountains have ignited the imaginations of the greatest golf course architects. Their winning combinations of natural wonders and man-made challenges easily make Tucson the preferred Arizona golf destination. In February, tune in to the televised World Golf Championships–Accenture 28

Match Play Championship for a virtual tour of the event’s luxurious location, The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, located northwest of Tucson in the community of Marana. Tucked into the Tortolita Mountains near Marana, The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain has hosted the PGA’s top 64 golfers for the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship since it opened in 2008. Visit the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa, which for over 30 years has hosted the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) Tour. Play on the Catalina Course and see why the par-4 18th hole is called one of the most challenging finishing holes on the PGA Tour. “That’s a serious hole; probably one of the toughest holes on Tour. It’s an amazing design,” said Geoff Ogilvy after capturing his first PGA Tour win there in 2005. If you prefer swinging your own clubs to watching the pros, the Omni’s Sonoran Course will give you a desert style challenge. Designed by Tom Lehman, the Sonoran Course has two

l lakes and 69 strategically placed bunkers. Off the course, the Omni offers an array of O eentertainment and dining venues including Tucson’s only 4-star Mobile-rated Spa, tenT nis, the Sweetwater Terrace, infinity edge n pool, and outdoor gardens. The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa is another standout on Tucson’s must-play list. The resort extends play to guests and club members on the 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature course. The rugged foothill terrain and shots across gaping ravines dictate challenges that stiffen incrementally on the Hill, Canyon and Ridge nines. From the western slope of the Santa Catalinas, the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Reosrt serves up golf on 45 holes. Carved into the mountainside the testy nine-hole par-34 Pusch Ridge course encircles the resort and rises and drops 175 vertical feet. Spreading through the rolling chaparral three miles west of the resort, the Conquistador and Cañada courses lend a desert flavor to their traditional design. From its serene perch in the Tucson Mountains, The JW Marriott Resort Starr Pass Resort & Spa invites golfers to a distinguished 27-hole layout by Arnold Palmer. The Rattler, Roadrunner and Coyote nines deliver panoramic vistas as commanding as the challenges at hand. Two well-seasoned layouts by Tom Fazio punctuate Loews Ventana Canyon Resort and Spa. The acclaimed Mountain and Canyon courses take golfers on a desert romp through the foothills and ravines directly below the Santa Catalinas. Just a short drive south of Tucson and 15 minutes north of the Mexico border, the Esplendor Resort at Rio Rico Country Club offers an 18 hole Robert Trent Jones Sr. golf course nestled in the scenic Santa Cruz River Valley. Nature plays a big part in many 2012 ISSUE 1

area golf course designs. Dubbed “the most photographed golf hole west of the Mississippi,” the par-3, third hole at The Mountain Course at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon Golf & Racquet Club is tucked into its own canyon. This Tom Faziodesigned course is also one of the “Top 50 Courses for Women” as selected by Golf Digest magazine. At Arizona National Golf Club, the winding layout by Robert Trent Jones Jr. takes golfers through arroyos, sculpted rock formations, and desert flora. The lofty par-3 fourth hole overlooks the entire Santa Cruz Valley, offering southern views all the way to Mexico. Tucson’s five municipal golf courses include two long-time tournament courses. Randolph North was set up for PGA Tour and then LPGA events so the greens vary greatly in slope and size, and present a real challenge for the serious stick. The adjacent Dell Urich course hosted LPGA tournaments in 2003 and 2004, and proved to reward strategic play. Karen Stupples holds the LPGA low raw score record of 258 on this course (2004), and the par-3 11th hole is the site of numerous holes-in-one. Just minutes south of downtown Tucson, the golf courses at Green Valley, Tubac, and Rio Rico offer rolling hills and buildings with Spanish colonial flair. Hollywood shot scenes for the 1996 movie Tin Cup at Tubac Golf Resort’s Rancho Nine course. It’s easy to recognize the par-5 fourth hole there with its menacing pond protecting the green. Experience the get-away feeling of desert golf, and bring your clubs to Tucson and Southern Arizona. There are private and public courses to suit every style and budget. The Hungry Golfer Golfers always seem to be seeking help. They ask questions. Questions like: “Where did my ball go? “How far to the pin?” “Does this putt break?” On and on it goes. Take it from me, when it comes to Prime Steak and an exquisite dining experience, head down to Camelback Corridor – and straight to Donovan’s Steak & Chophouse at 31st and Camelback. The perfect evening awaits! On a recent evening my dining companion and I did just that. Upon our arrival I knew something special was about to occur. The atmosphere is refined, and lacks any air of stuffiness or pretense. We were attended to most professionally by the staff of Sarah, Brett and Ramon. As a starter we ordered Oysters Rockefeller – they were just right. Other appetizers include a Mac & Cheese Martini, with bacon and Maryland-style crabcake. Next up, the chop salad; it was terrific, light and lively with a zesty dressing. Of course, also available is the classic wedge with blue cheese, or the Caesar. We shared the Half Seafood Tower for Two. It included jumbo shrimp, crab legs and crab claws, along with three dipping sauces. I strongly recommend giving this a try. It is worth the price of the ticket! Okay, the main event at Donovan’s is steak, and every steak prepared at Donovan’s is USDA prime. Chef Nixon prepares all steaks to perfection. The steak can be accompanied by lobster or crab, and becomes Surf & Turf. Ala carte sides include mac cheese with bacon, creamed spinach, and giant onion rings. The wine list at Donovan’s is amazing, with hundreds to choose from. Lots 2012 ISSUE 1

of Washington varietals, as well as a great array of “the bubbly” to awakenthe senses. This restaurant originally hails from San Diego, where it has two locations. Donovan’s Steak & Chophouse has garnered acclaim as being on the list of “Primetime Top Steakhouses in U.S.” and continually wins Wine Spectator’s “Best Award of Excellence.” After a day on the Arizona links one can develop an appetite for a hearty steak dinner. In addition to having some of the nation’s best golf courses, we Phoenicians are fortunate to have one of the country’s premier steakhouses, right here in our own back yard. Take it from me: Give Donovan’s a try. – It`s what they call “a gimme!” As ever hungry, The Hungry Golfer
