estled within the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country in Boerne, Texas, Tapatio Springs Golf Resort and Conference Center - just 30 miles northwest of San Antonio, provides golfers of all skill levels a golf experience like no other. With unparalleled views and one of the most beautiful golf courses the Southwest has to offer, Tapatio Springs reflects the colors, beauty and ambiance of South Texas’ rugged natural landscape. Battered by extraordinary flooding and followed by a historic drought, this beloved golf course would at one time appear beyond disrepair; however, a stronger and more vibrant course would soon emerge. Acquired by a new ownership group in 2010 and under the guidance of renowned golf course management company, KemperSports to oversee the restoration and operations, an exciting new chapter for Tapatio Springs Golf Resort began. The central amenity for the resort is 27 holes of championship golf that incorporates three distinct challenging combinations of play. From new irrigation systems to improved turf conditions, first-class golf course restoration has been the utmost priority of the new management. Built in 1981, the original “Lakes” and “Valley” 9-hole layouts are ranked among the Top Ten Golf Courses in Texas by the Dallas

Designed by Art Schaupeter, the course opened in 2000 and was an instant success. With quaint views of the knobs and vistas overlooking the foothills of the Texas Hill Country, the course is quite a surprise to newcomers. Consistently terrific turf conditions from tee to green, the course has few hazards in the way of water or bunkers and is not terribly long, but it can manage a bite when played from the tips and with challenging pin placement. The Buckhorn is now sporting a new banquet room, too! A casual and relaxed atmosphere (what else would you expect?!), the great room is the perfect place to start or finish a tournament or host a fun party! One of the most fun and memorable courses you will ever play, The Buckhorn Golf Course exceeds every golfer’s expectations!

Voted San Antonio’s favorite course in 2006, 2007 and 2009, The Republic is a favorite for all levels of golfer. With wide fairways and inviting greens, the championship layout solidifies the course’s reputation as solid, incredible golf. An easy 10-minute drive from the Riverwalk, The Republic couldn’t be more convenient to get to no matter what direction you’re coming from! PECAN VALLEY GOLF CLUB If ever there was a sentimental favorite, Pecan Valley Golf Club is it! A Foresight Golf acquisition in 2008, Pecan has been restored to its glory days through thoughtful and well –planned turf management. Massive oak and pecan trees line the fairways and flirt with the greens. The course is one of the ‘old masters’ where layout is concerned. A new set of forward tees that play to 4200 yards make the course more enjoyable for the ‘new masters’ to conquer. Just south of downtown, Pecan Valley is convenient and easy to get to. Pecan Valley Golf Club – a storied past restored with a promising future.

Texas golf scene. Golf Digest bestowed a 4-Star rating upon Star Ranch and the Dallas Morning News named it one of the best values in the state of Texas. Always looking to improve and deliver a top-notch player experience, Star Ranch recently installed a new drainage system for its bunkers and packed them with new sand. The 170-yard par-3 15th hole was also enhanced with the addition of a sparkling new waterfall. In 2007, the club unveiled a brand new practice facility featuring a grass driving range, short game area with chipping greens, practice bunkers and putting green. Finally, Star Ranch just added a new fleet of golf carts. Star Ranch has multiple tee placements to accommodate every talent and experience level, and pace of play is above average. In fact, shotgun tournaments featuring 100 players often average less than four and a half hours per round. The Club at Star Ranch welcomes any type of social event or business function, including everything from banquets to luncheons to wedding receptions. With a tournament pavilion and indoor ballroom, the facility is also set up to host showers, dinners, golf outings and tournaments. Star Ranch annually hosts 2011 ISSUE 1

Valero Texas Open
Historic City Events Partner Creating a Stronger Sense of Community in the Spring The Valero Texas Open, April 11th – 17th. Ask almost anyone in San Antonio what’s so special about April, and you’ll get the same one word answer, “FIESTA”. This 11 day, “Party with a Purpose”, has been a San Antonio tradition since 1891.Although it humbly began as a commemoration of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, it’s grown to become a commemoration of historic events, a celebration of the City’s rich and diverse cultures and an opportunity to raise money for many local organizations. The Valero Texas Open, a younger but very vibrant San Antonio tradition (begun in 1922), has brought national attention to the city and was founded in part to help establish San Antonio as a winter tourism destination. In some circles within the golf community, it is also seen as the birthplace of the organization that evolved into the modern PGA TOUR. As important a role as the tournament has played in weaving the fabric of the city and transforming the sport of professional golf, it’s most significant role has been as a charitable contributor to many worthy organizations … just like Fiesta San Antonio. As fate would have it, in 2011, these two historic city traditions will overlap. In April, San Antonio, one of the country’s fastest 16
016-017.Valero.indd 1
growing communities, will play host to two exciting, fun-filled events: Fiesta San Antonio will be April 7-17, 2011 and the Valero Texas Open will be April 11-17.This confluence on the calendar creates a fantastic opportunity for Fiesta and the VTO to join forces to raise unprecedented amounts of money for charitable organizations in the community, and to showcase the City’s amazing history to a worldwide audience. Being the new kid on the April social calendar, the Valero Texas Open reached out to the Fiesta Commission, The Texas Cavaliers, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and other host Fiesta groups to explore partnerships. These partnerships will enable the Valero Texas Open to get the attention of a broader segment of the community; and at a time when the community is more open to new, fun, exciting and charitable opportunities. The benefit to Fiesta San Antonio could be strong as well.Since 2009, the tournament’s new spring dates have brought with them two days of network broadcast coverage (CBS) and expanded coverage on Golf Channel. The tournament broadcast reaches an incredible audience in the United States and goes to over

alado Del Rio was lengthened to more than 6,500 yards, and thanks to additional mounding, renovated bunkering and an improved drainage system, it will be far more enjoyable to play more days of the year. Salado Del Rio might be the more scenic of the two courses with its tree-lined fairways, additional mounding around the greens and forced carries over hazards, some you can play out of, some you can’t. The stretch of holes from the fourth through the eighth is particularly breathtaking as they play along and across Salado Creek, offering more pronounced doglegs and the most dramatic elevation changes on either course

he La Loma Grande Course, originally developed by the legendary A.W. Tillinghast, was built by the soldiers themselves in the early 1930s. It is the only military golf course to host a PGA Tour event; two Texas Opens that were won by Hall of Famers Arnold Palmer and Gene Littler. Now it has been returned to the dream of Tillinghast’s original design. La Loma Grande has always been the flatter of the two layouts, but most regular players also consider it the more difficult course with its pushed-up greens, particularly on the back nine, and its diabolical bunkering and mounding around the greens.

Faith – and the gumption to use it in your golf game By Steve Habel Special to Golfers’Guide
If golf has a Holy Grail or an ultimate lesson son, it’s that the game game, like life life, is all about the art, not the outcome; it’s about the journey not the arrival. Faith and that journey can be found in the small Texas town of Utopia, at least according to top sports psychologist Dr. David Cook’s book Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia. Utopia, a real-life town of less than 400 folks about 80 miles from San Antonio, is the setting for the story of an aspiring unnamed golf pro and his inadvertent journey of discovery to golf’s big picture. After having a meltdown in the midst of a big tournament, he strikes out for parts unknown and eventually takes a fork in the road to Utopia. There, in the town’s smoky diner, is posted a handwritten note about a driving range where you can “Find Your Game.” A “goat ranch” golf course encircling an old cemetery (yes, both actually exist) sets the stage for Cook’s everyman story and its account of a chance meeting between the unnamed golf pro and an unorthodox mentor, Johnny, a small town rancher with uncommon insight. Johnny’s unusual and memorable golf teachings incorporate lessons using fishing, painting and flying, and against this backdrop, Cook takes readers step by step through the critical mental aspects of the game, from a confidence-building, pre-shot checklist to lessons on instinct over intellect, truth over tradition, excellence over acceptance, and expecting the unexpected. Golf’s Sacred Journey is as much a story of faith as it is a forum for Cook’s 30-plus years of hands-on experience coaching hundreds of PGA, NBA (he advised the two-time world champion San Antonio Spurs), MLB and NFL players as well as Olympians and collegiate champions. Cook, who studied under noted mental golfing coach Bob Rotella at the University of Virginia, has been named by Golf Digest 2011 ISSUE 1
023.Faith Edit.indd 1
as one of the top ten mental-game coach coaches in the game game. “Golf is like a Texas two-step,” Johnny tells the young pro. “Until you feel the music, you ain’t nothin’ but a step counter.” Along with the pro, readers learn that feeling the music is about infusing a swing with rhythm, balance and patience. It’s about seeing past the interference to a shot we envision in our minds. It is about emotional control, conviction and not over thinking. Cook’s, and by literal proxy, Johnny’s lessons boils down to just three tasks: see, feel and trust (SFT). Seing, the rancher explains, means making the shot deliberate by envisioning what you want to happen – “calling the shot” in terms of shape, target and trajectory. Feeling is the internalizing of that shot – its rhythm, balance and patience. And trusting is what sports psychologists would call an absence of mechanical control, but what the rancher dubs “letting it happen.” Trust, according to Johnny, is a decision. But there’s more to “SFT” than meets the eye. Golf’s Sacred Journey’s success has spawned a cottage industry of sorts for Cook. His three-day Utopia, Texas retreats and one-day “Golf’s Field of Dreams” seminars, modeled after the book’s story and lessons, are drawing scores of fans and transforming souls along with golf games. I found myself comparing the notions taught in Golf’s Sacred Journey with those forwarded by famed teacher Harvey Penick in his Little Red Book and its three subsequent sequels. Keeping things simple and remembering that enjoyment from golf is derived from the playing of the game in its usually wonderful settings are the core values and things that bring golfers happiness. With that comparison, and by helping golfers move closer to that “Zen” ideal rather than worrying about pars and birdies on the scorecard, Cook’s book succeeds immensely. It’s a quick read and well worth your time and attention.

The Flying L Guest Ranch Dude Ranch Character, Modern Comfort is Worth the Drive
T
he land of opportunity can often be the land of redundancy. If you’ve ’ been b tto th the attractions tt ti iin one A American i ttown, you’ve visited them all. At Bandera’s Flying L Guest Ranch you won’t find a different slant on the same old thing; you’ll find an authentic Texas experience. In this pocket of Americana guests marinate in dude ranch character and modern comfort, not to mention championship golf. It’s no stretch to say that the Flying L Guest Ranch is worth the drive from Austin, San Antonio, Houston and beyond. “No other resort in America has all of the amenities that we have at one place,” remarked Jeff Hoard, the Flying L’s new director of golf. Rattling off the list of activities alone will leave you breathless, and that’s before you’ve saddled up or teed off. Overnight visitors to the Flying L are treated to a full breakfast every morning during their stay and dinner each night at an on-site restaurant. Once the day begins, get ready for an adventure that includes summertime entry into the resort’s water park (opening mid-March for spring break), horseback riding, golf on Flying L’s 18-hole championship course, nightly western entertainment, various activities for the kids, wagon rides across the 550-acre ranch, Creekside picnics with all the fixins’, basketball, tennis and swimming (adult pool, hot tub). It’s all here at the Flying L. The Flying L is a family-friendly establishment blanketed in real western décor. The rolling terrain of the Texas Hill Country makes it a popular venue for golf tournaments and outings. A true Texas atmosphere permeates the buildings and rooms. Best of all, the resort is a stone’s throw from downtown Bandera, where more adventure awaits. Known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” Bandera boasts a charming downtown with lovely shops, restaurants and saloons. How could you embark upon a “cowboy” vacation without spending a night here? The staff at the Flying L is known for their great attitudes and accommodating spirit. For more information on staying and playing at the Flying L in the heart of cowboy country, please visit www.flyingl.com or call 800-292-5134. The Flying L has a proven track record of hosting golf tournaments and team building activities. Call today to book your outing, corporate meeting, banquet or business seminar. 24

Vaaler Creek Adding Another Dimension
T
he growth at Vaaler Creek Golf Club is set to continue in 2011 with the addition of a multi-purpose pavilion at the turn. Providing golfers shelter and space for relaxation, the new open-air building will promote Vaaler Creek’s ability to host larger tournaments and weddings. Capacity is expected to be up to 150 guests, and décor will be similar to the ranch-style motif found in buildings around the property. The facility will feature a fullyenclosed kitchen where preparations will be made to feed event guests. Swirling ceiling fans will generate a cool breeze to break through the hot Texas heat, while propane heaters will be employed to warm visitors during the winter. Combined with a 5,550-square-foot deck bordering a pond that guards the 18th green, the open-air pavilion gives Vaaler Creek ample flexibility when planning your big day. Posttournament functions can begin on the deck with drinks, and head to the pavilion for appetizers and awards. Options are also plentiful for wedding receptions; your party can seek shelter under the pavilion or congregate under the oaks shading the deck. To discuss custom wedding packages, call Tosha Grosch at (830) 833-0706.

026 Vaalel Pavillion Edit.indd 1
Golf continues to be the main draw at Vaaler Creek. Now entering its 2nd full season, the 6,864-yard layout is quintessential Hill Country close to Austin and San Antonio. It’s a visually stunning and uniquely memorable layout that sets out to challenge more avid and accomplished players by pinching landing areas and employing strategically-placed hazards, while at the same time achieving playability and enhancing enjoyment for the average golfer. Both sides feature spectacular panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country, an abundance of live oaks and rolling topography. The course is in tremendous shape heading into 2011, and is right earning a reputation as one of the “must play” golf destinations in Central Texas. Frequent players have a chance to win at Vaaler Creek each month. Every time you tee it up at this Hill Country gem, drop your name into the fishbowl in the pro shop as you register for your round. Monthly drawings will be held with the winner receiving a customfitted set of Titleist irons. The club is also pleased to announce its “Thirsty Thursday” promotion. Every Thursday guests and golfers can enjoy $1 off all beers. For more information on Vaaler Creek, visit www.vaalercreekgolfclub.com.

elcome to 2011! Thank you for picking up the Spring issue of Golfer’s Guide. Take a few minutes to page through our guide. You’ll find great information that will make selecting the venue for your next 18-hole outing a breeze. As always, we’ll walk you through the very best places to play, eat, practice and purchase great golf gear. One of my favorite courses is Eagle Pointe, a wonderful design with a proven track record of promoting and growing the game it’s built for. In April, Eagle Pointe will host the 6th annual STPGA Foundation Pro-Am in an effort to raise funds for junior golf programs. Help the members of Eagle Pointe and community leaders surpass last year’s totals and enjoy a great day on the links. Information on the event and the golf course can be found inside. We also have a story on line on local pro Tim Thelen, who recently notched a very gratifying and possibly life-changing win. Tim won the European Senior Tour’s Qualifying School and will be off to keep his card and live his dream when he turns 50 this June. Log on to www.Houston.GolfersGuide. com to read the story. To get the latest news and information on everything going on in the Houston golf community, be sure to visit Houston.GolfersGuide.com. Our latest online venture is called “Clubhouse Connections” and it’s changed the way you can get to know a course via online. Watch the website for contests and specials as well. golf lf course can be b measured d by b more than yardage, rating and slope. The tall pines shading the rolling fairways at Mont Belvieu’s Eagle Pointe Golf Club are literally pillars of the South Texas golf community. Operational for more than a decade, this multi-faceted facility 35 minutes from downtown Houston has displayed considerable gusto for growing the game and giving back. While the numbers aren’t alarming, golf participation was dropping as the decade wound to a close. According to the
48
048-051 Eagle Pointe.indd 1
Nationall G Golf lf Foundation, d the h number b off golfers nationwide fell from 30 million in 2005 to 27.1 million in 2009. Eagle Pointe’s PGA Professional Jeff Strong has deliberately placed an emphasis on the game’s future at his course by providing juniors with the resources and opportunities necessary to get involved in golf. Noticing that the South Texas PGA Section’s Foundation was without a fundraising tournament, Strong volunteered his facility and energy and created an event that would raise money and promote a worthy cause.

“Supporting junior golf is great for the future of the game and it’s great for the kids who are helped through the STPGA Foundation” said Strong, who served as a captain in the 2009 Joe Black Cup matches and was voted 2009 STPGA Golf Professional of the Year. “The tournament helps us give something back to the game, just as our predecessors did when we were young golfers.” In its first five years, the STPGA Pro-Am has raised more than $50,000 for junior golf. Most notably, the tournament raised $16,100 for the STPGA Foundation 2011 ISSUE 1

in 2010. That’s a record for the five-year old tournament and exceeded the previous year’s tally by some $5,000. Considering the state of the economy, that’s a notable achievement. The money raised goes toward scholarships and junior golf programs. Eagle Pointe’s own junior golf program is flourishing and a great example of fostering a love of the game in the next generation. Started in 1999 when the course opened, Eagle Pointe’s junior program has grown from a measly 15 golfers to about 125 participants presently. Five sessions are

offered in the summer, and the club also runs a Spring Break junior golf program. Pieces for next year’s STPGA Pro-Am are already falling into place. Barbers Hill Bank will return as presenting sponsor of the event. Companies who choose to get involved will have a chance to contribute to the STPGA Foundation. There are four levels of sponsorships available. For more information on becoming a sponsor, call Eagle Pointe GC. Strong applauded the swift and decisive action of the local business community. “Every year, this tournament has had great local support because the community knows the importance of the cause and the impact it has for junior golfers to play the game or to further their education,” he said. “Their involvement speaks volumes about the quality of the people who live, work and play golf in our area. On behalf of Eagle Pointe Golf Club and the STPGA Foundation, we appreciate 50

everyone’s support.” Aside from the fundraiser and inhouse junior golf program, Eagle Pointe has welcomed elite high school golfers to play their championships on the course. The layout has hosted the 5A regional championship for nine years. The 2011 STPGA Pro-Am is scheduled for April 25, 2011. There will be a shotgun start in the morning and in the afternoon. For details on registration and sponsorship, please call Jeff Strong at (281) 385-6666. Houston’s Must Play Club is Worth the Drive Eagle Pointe’s loyal following has developed a fondness for the secluded nature of the par-71 track. The Rick Forester design is equal parts peaceful, eye-catching and playable. Eagle Pointe’s distinguishable characteristics are its rolling fairways, mature pines, dramatic elevation changes and

water hazards. With no homes on 17 of the 18 holes, golf is what you get at Eagle Pointe. Eagle Pointe is also known for its steeply tilted, undulating greens that will challenge even the most expert players. Strategically speaking, it’s important to place your approach shots below the hole at Eagle Pointe because of the quickness of the putting surfaces. Eagle Pointe’s closing stretch is the perfect way to conclude a round of golf. The 15th is the toughest par 3, with a two-tiered green and menacing bunkers right and left. The long par-4 16th features multiple water hazards and a small, narrow green. The par-5 17th is the best birdie opportunity over the four-hole stretch if you don’t find yourself in one of the many sand traps guarding the green. Finally, the par-4 finishing hole requires not one, but two shots over water to a well-protected green. The course has always been in good condition, and this season will be no different. Minor changes were made to

the layout, including added length on the par-4 11th which will now measure 440 yards. Overall, golfers who escape the congestion of Houston should expect the same satisfying experience. Aside from daily-fee play, Eagle Pointe offers affordable annual memberships and Player Development programs. Information is available by calling the golf course. The facility also offers a state-of-the art fitness center and an 8,000-square-foot tournament pavilion that would be the perfect place for corporate outings, weddings or charity events in 2011. Visit www.eaglepointeonline.com or call (281) 385-6666 for more information. Eagle Pointe’s website is now more interactive, offering golfers more ways to connect directly to the golf course. Visitors can chat with a golf course representative in real time, text or call the club, catch up on the latest programs and specials, watch videos and read Facebook updates.

olf is a passion, not a chore. Beneath the towering Oaks and sturdy Pines that per permeate Timber Creek Golf Club, golfers are enjoying the game like never before. General Manager Mike Griswold and his staff are stressing the fun aspects of golf, and developing an uncommon rapport with their customers. “People who play here frequently call this their club and have a sense of belonging,” Griswold chimed. “They don’t pay dues to get that.” The course’s culture is equaled if not surpassed by the design of Jay Riviere, who incorporated dense woodlands, winding creeks and rock outcroppings to create a splendid layout just 20 miles from downtown Houston. “Our course isn’t target golf, but the fairways are really defined,” Griswold said. “Jay Riviere’s genius is that you know where you want to hit it and where you don’t want to hit it off every tee box. There’s no guessing.”

vid golfers in the Houston area yearning for a pure golf experience set apart from the city and brimming with secluded, natural surroundings can find that true, undisturbed feeling at Eagle Pointe Golf Club. The par-71 Rick Forester-design located less than 35 minutes from downtown Houston off I-10 in Mont Belvieu, is equal parts peaceful, eye-catching and playable. The course’s distinguishable characteristics are its rolling fairways, stunningly tall pines, dramatic elevation changes

and an abundance of water. With no homes on 17 of the 18 holes, golf is what you get at Eagle Pointe. The trademark of Eagle Pointe is its steeply tilted, undulating greens that will challenge even the most expert players. Strategically speaking, it’s important to place your approach shots below the hole at Eagle Pointe because of the quickness of the putting surfaces. Eagle Pointe’s closing stretch is the perfect way to conclude a round of golf. . Visit www.eaglepointeonline.com or call (281) 385-6666 for more information.

Fire Brand: A Longer, Better Burner
D
esigners of TaylorMade’s Burner 2.0 irons promise that the next generation of this highly-successful brand will be better, faster and above all, longer than its predecessor. Using thin-face technology to produce more ball speed and distance and individually engineered shafts and head shapes to promote feel and control, TaylorMade has taken the No. 1 selling irons in golf and made them even better. “We’ve succeeded at creating a better performing iron with the Burner 2.0, which is just as long, easier to play and more refined in its feel and sound,” said Bret Wahl, senior director of research and development for irons, wedges and putters. “Every Burner 2.0 iron is better than its predecessor and, when compared against the longest, best-selling iron we’ve ever made, that says something truly significant.” Improved weight distribution in long irons will promote easy launch, and create greater stability and forgiveness. Every individual Burner 2.0 iron boasts a different face thickness. The thinnest and fastest faces are in the long irons, with the face in each successive iron growing thicker down through the middle- and short-irons. An improved vibration management system will make these revolutionary clubs feel better in your hand at impact. “Golfers who play the current Burner iron will notice a difference in the sound and feel, which is significantly softer and more satisfying in the Burner 2.0,” said TaylorMade Manager of iron development Brian Bazzel. “We put in a lot of effort to refine and improve the vibration-management system in the cavity in order to reach our target for sound and feel.” The sleek set of irons coated in metal and black hit retail locations in early October, and a will be offered at $699 for steel shafts and $899 for graphite shafts.
