Family-owned and operated since they opened, Kissimmee Bay and Remington are favorites among locals and visitors in large part for their great value, terrific conditioning, welcoming staff and challenging layouts. They are both located a short distance from the Orlando Airport and not far from the major attractions of the Orlando area. The similarities between the two courses, however, pretty much end there. While Kissimmee is carved around gorgeous century-old oaks, Remington offers an open feel off the tee with multiple water-hazards and tiewall bulk-headed greens. The sharp contrast between the two courses is even more surprising given they were crafted, in part, by the same architect. Renowned designer Lloyd Clifton crafted Kissimmee Bay and collaborated with his son, George, and fellow designer Ken Ezell at Remington – collaboration so well received that Remington landed on Golf Digest’s “Best New Courses” list in 1996. While Clifton certainly gave each course its own unique characteristics and identity, he did share his affinity for risk/reward design, placing multiple water-hazards and strategic bunkering throughout both layouts. The two also reflect Clifton’s flair for thoughtful, scenic and even at times strategic landscaping that lends to the enjoyment of a ro round at both courses. With two special courses so close in proximity and so diverse in challenge, it only seems fair to make them even div more mo affordable to play. To that end, both offer special same-day sam replay rates at the sister course. But if a golfer cares car to set up shop at just one of the courses for the entire day, there is great value being offered there as well. Both courses offer a popular “ALL YOU CAN Practice, Pla and Eat” program that provides all day access to the Play gre amenities at Remington and Kissimmee Bay. As part great of this special deal, players receive unlimited practice balls and unlimited access to the golf course for the entire day. Sweetening the deal, players get breakfast on arrival, a hot dog and soda at the turn and lunch in the full-service restaurants. Rates vary, so visit www.golfinkissimmee.com to get current pricing. “This program has become really popular at both courses,” said Mark Farrow, general manager of Remington Golf Club. “It’s a value that is very difficult to beat in this area.” SPRING 2011

2/23/11 9:27:33 AM
That program, coupled with a friendly staff and solid attention to detail, has earned both layouts considerable loyalty from year-round and part-time residents. Yet due their location and reputations, plenty of visiting golfers to the Orlando area certainly have both courses on their itinerary. “We are one of the closest courses to the airport,” Farrow said. “That makes it convenient to make Remington or Kissimmee Bay their first round in or last round out of the area.”
Given the diverse nature of the courses and their dynamic challenges, making one the first and the other the last (any order will do) would be a really smart move. Since its 1989 opening, Kissimmee Bay has separated itself from other Central Florida courses in regard to its design, friendly atmosphere and member amenities. Like Remington, Kissimmee features its fair share of water hazards (16 of 18 holes, actually) but unlike many Florida layouts it also meanders through clusters of pines that help to craft both the feel and the challenge of the course. 10
008-011.Kiss_Rem.indd 3
Much of that challenge comes from the live oaks and towering cypress trees that line the fairways at Kissimmee Bay and the dozen water hazards that are strategically placed throughout the course. Always in impeccable condition, Kissimmee was nominated as “One of America’s Best New Courses” by Golf Digest and has an active and thriving membership base, which also enjoys privileges at Remington as part of the program. Though it stretches to only 6,800 yards and plays to 6,000 from the white (middle) tees, Kissimmee Bay boasts a collection of par5s that, for many, are the highlight of the round. To wit, the 585-yard ninth takes a back seat to no other par-5 in the area, challenging golfers with three separate water hazards that come into play on each shot heading to the green. The crescentshaped hole wraps around a lake to the left off the tee and features a second lake to the right challenging the second shot and a third body of water protecting the green on the approach shot. Par is great on this hole, but most players will accept finishing it with the same ball they started victory enough. On the back side, Clifton crafted several enjoyable shot-making holes around and between five ponds, highlighted by the beautiful par-3 16th, which features breathtaking views across Lake Tohopekaliga. As lasting memories go, this hole will create one for sure. At Remington, Clifton crafted a
centralflorida.golfersguide.com
SPRING 2011
2/21/11 11:28:20 AM
temporary design that is equal parts challenging and playable. The layout features rolling fairways, lush greens and water hazards on 17 of 18 holes. Ultimately, it’s not simply the presence of these hazards but rather their positioning that adds to Remington’s challenge. Clifton expertly wrapped many of the holes around the water hazards, creating numerous risk/reward opportunities that will test the mettle of the most daring golfer and the accuracy of those that choose to play it safe. With five sets of tees, Remington can play as short as 5,200 yards or stretch out beyond 7,100, making it playable for golfers of all skill levels who can bite off as much or as little as they care to. The course offers a nice variety of holes, including an impressive set of par-3s that are among the best in Central Florida. Water looms on two of the holes and the greens on all four par-3s are well-guarded by bunkers, placing a high premium on accuracy. Among the highlights on the front nine is the 402-yard par-4 eighth hole. While finding the fairway on this hole is important, the true test comes on the approach shot to a half-island green that is raised out of the water by rail-road ties.
SPRING 2011
008-011.Kiss_Rem.indd 4
With water protecting the entire right side of the putting surface and a large bunker posted on the back left, the eighth green may very well prove to be the toughest to hit in regulation at Remington. The challenge of Remington’s inward nine is highlighted by the 580-yard par-5 13th. With a sharp dogleg left, position off the tee on this hole is critical to set up a manageable lay-up before attacking one of the most difficult greens on the course. The putting surface is protected by numerous bunkers and is perhaps the most undulated on the course, making par no gimmie even when hitting the green in three. Both Kissimmee Bay and Remington feature expansion practice facilities, highlighted by Remington’s unique water driving range that features target greens from multiple areas. Likewise both offer expansive banquet facilities that are ideal for weddings, charity events and corporate outings. For more information on both Remington and Kissimmee Bay, visit www.playgolfinkissimmee.com and discover all that makes these two courses so special – both for the same reasons and some ultimately unique to each.

Light It Up at Orange Lake Resort Like most pleasant surprises or exciting developments, evelopments, The Orange Lake Resort comes omes upon you without much notice and with little fanfare fanfare. There’s no glistening water fountain or obnoxious tower; just an understated entrance that, if you’re not paying attention, could be easily missed. Yet like that long-awaited present that isn’t realized until unwrapped, it’s not until you pass through the gates to Orange Lake that you realize what a special place you have visited and what a memorable golf experience is awaiting you. Located just a couple miles from the Walt Disney World Resort, Orange Lake might just be the best-kept secret in Central Florida. The resort features two 18-hole championship courses, one of which was designed by legendary Arnold Palmer, and a pair of nine-hole layouts, including a lighted par-3 track also created by Palmer. It’s also home to a full-service instructional academy and a host of accommodations including the 14
014-017 Orange Lake.indd 1
Holiday Inn Select and numerous condos and villas. Indeed, like most secrets, the Orange Lake story is just begging to be told. It’s true that around these parts the only locations open that long have roller coasters and people dressed up as Disney characters. But at Orange Lake, golf isn’t just an amenity, it’s a commitment. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the Legends Course is by far the resort’s flagship. That said, The Reserve can hold its own against any course in the Central Florida region. Originally designed by Joe Lee in 1982, the course was re-designed by Mike Dasher in 1995 and the changes have kept this course in good stead for the past 15-plus years. In addition to the 9-hole course crafted by Palmer – The Legends Walk – Orange Lake also features a 9-hole layout – Crane’s Bend – designed by Dasher. So whether it’s 27, 36 or maybe even 45, visitors to Orange Lake have more golf options at their disposal than found anywhere else in the Orlando

ke Resort area. Wait Wait, sorry, not just golf options, but golf exper experiences unlike anything else in the region. “I think thi the most special aspect of our facility is that we offer four different golfing experiences,” said Stewart McComb, the club’s head golf professional. “We have something for every level – championship to beginner, coupled with a top 100 teacher on the property. That’s a huge plus. The other side of that is the uniqueness of our set-up with the lighted course. We have golf from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and very few places can say that.” The Legends at Orange Lake Resort Built by Arnold Palmer Design in 1998, The Legends at Orange Lake is certainly the resort’s headliner. From its creation, this 7,072-yard gem gave the two-mile wide golf facility a strong and dramatic course that could hold its own against the championship-caliber layouts clustered in southern Orlando. SPRING 2011
014-017 Orange Lake.indd 2
The name ‘Legends’ honors Kemmons Wilson, founder of the Holiday Inn Hotel chain who opened the Orange Lake Resort in 1982, and Palmer, a living legend in golf and host of the PGA Tour’s annual Arnold Palmer Invitational at nearby Bay Hill. Adding to the overall diversity of Orange Lake, The Legends course features two distinct nines. Reminiscent of old Scottish-style courses, the wide-open Links nine will bring windy conditions into play that can make club selection challenging. Strategically-contoured greens require well-placed approach shots and precision putting. The longest of Orange Lake Resort’s challenging golf holes at 610 yards, No. 4 is a good warm-up before venturing into “The Pines.” Accented by towering pines, majestic oaks, winding fairways and flowing water, The Pines nine creates a serene setting that complements each individual hole. Tee shots are fired between strategic openings

cut through the trees. A wayward shot here could result in a ball pushed deep in the woods. Much like the classic courses of North Carolina, proper club selection and accuracy are required to successfully navigate through The Pines. The Island Oak, No. 13, is The Legends’ signature hole. As a whole, the course favors a patient player adept at on-course decision making that isn’t opposed to taking a chance or two when the opportunity presents itself. A full array of amenities is available to golfers at The Legends Course, including a clubhouse with a fully-stocked golf shop and Legacy Grille sports bar, and an assortment of practice facilities. The Reserve and Crane’s Bend Florida-based architect Mike Dasher transformed a 27-hole resort course into The Reserve at Orange Lake, giving Orange Lake Resort a pair of championship courses that has area and out-of-town golfers thinking, “Why not play 36?” The complete renovation was unveiled in late 2005, and subsequently named a finalist for Golf Inc. Magazine’s “Renovation of the Year” award. This 18-hole, par-71 16
014-017 Orange Lake.indd 3
course winds through myriad of water, sand and rolling greens. It was named The Reserve to highlight the harmony between the perfectly manicured greens of the course and the carefully preserved surrounding wetlands, home to a variety of native plants and wildlife. The Reserve shares a clubhouse with Crane’s Bend, Dasher’s nine-hole par-30 riding course that features six par 3s and three par 4s. If you’re looking to fit a fast, challenging round into your day, the course’s nine-hole configuration, end-to-end cart paths and its demand for precision make it the perfect option. The course measures just a few yards shy of 2,000, making it ideal for fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, beginners and seniors. Located mere yards from the world-class McCord Golf Academy at Orange Lake, players often step off the range and onto to this course to practice swing adjustments made during an instructional session. Play Nine at Night Don’t let anyone tell you golf is a game played only in the day, at least not while you are staying at the Orange Lake

Resort. At Legends Walk, Orange Lake’s lighted, nine-hole course, golfers of all ages and abilities can play until 11 p.m. on a Palmer-designed course that combines the game’s universal appeal with the unique-nature of swinging in the moonlight. Winding throughout the North Village, this spectacular 1,581-yard walking course is no ordinary pitch and putt, with holes ranging in length from 85 to 222 yards. You just might need every club in your golf bag to complete this well-balanced layout consisting of water, woods and sand. That said, this is the perfect venue for working on the all-important mid-length and short games that the best golfers use to drive down their scores. Legends Walk serves as a challenging round for experienced golfers and makes a great natural classroom for new golfers. Best of all, it’s an affordable golf outing that families can experience together. Tee times can be made at Legends Walk until 9 p.m. McCord Golf Academy The Reserve Course is home to The McCord Golf Academy, where new golfers can find instruction on how to play, and seasoned golfers can work on the finer points of their game. The McCord Golf Academy is recognized by Golf Magazine as one of the “Top 25” Golf Schools in America. Lead instructor Rick McCord is also rated by Golf Magazine as one of the “Top 100” Best Teachers in America. Private instruction and group golf clinics are available daily. ith a committed new ownership group, a renewed focus on course conditioning and customer service and a golf course design that is truly inspired, there’s only one message being told at Black Bear Golf Club these days – The Bear is Back – and that is great news for Central Florida golf. A P.B. Dye-designed classic located just outside of Orlando, Black Bear is one of a very few true links style layouts located in Central Florida. The course takes full advantage of spectacular mounding, significant bunkering and challenging well-guarded greens. From the back of its four sets of tees, the course can stretch to more than 7,000 yards, providing more than a stiff test for the finest of golfers. In fact, the course has played host to seven United States Amateur Public Links tournaments, Canadian Tour events and several Hooters Tour competitions. The facility is also home to several PGA and LPGA Tour players, providing true insight into just how special Black Bear is. All this, and one of the most reasonable green fee structures in Central Florida, and one sees why The Bear is an Orlando must play. “The course has a real pedigree,” said Richard Horton, managing partner of Black Bear. “Golfers can play on a tourlevel course that all the pros play on, and not lose their wallet doing it.” Since taking over the course last November, Horton and his ownership group have moved quickly to return the The Bear to its former glory. They invested in improving course conditioning from bunkers to landscaping and have put work into the impressive 40,000-square-foot practice facility that includes a 400-yard double-ended driving range with 7-target greens and a large practice putting green. It’s the design, however, that has been
SPRING 2011

drawing both local and visiting golfers to Black Bear since day one. Visually and strategically defined by rolling mounds and deep, gorgeous bunkers, Black Bear truly is a special course. When played early in the morning and late in the afternoon it’s even more spectacular as the rising and setting sun illuminates the challenging terrain. “Play this course at just the right time of day and it is a truly inspiring experience that you will want to repeat again and again,” Horton said. Though featuring few forced carries to worry golfers, The Bear boasts 120 bunkers, the majority of which are strategically located throughout the course and are prepared to catch wayward or poorly executed shots. Though strong throughout, the front side is highlighted by a strong finish on the 8th and 9th holes, the only two featuring trees in play at Black Bear. Similar holes in look and feel, both require drives that navigate towering oaks that loom along the fairway and approach shots to greens that are well bunkered. The signature hole at Black Bear, the 9th is simply gorgeous with the large oaks and a green that is set in a natural amphitheater that sits just to the right of Black Bear’s gorgeous clubhouse. For those looking to improve their games, Black Bear is home to the Black Bear Shaun Webb Golf Academy. Webb is a Hank Haney certified golf instructor and offers instruction for players of all skill levels. Black Bear features a full-service restaurant – The Bear’s Den – that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Common Faults in Driver Set-up
By Dave Dolengowski Senior Golf Instructor – Faldo Golf Institute by Marriott 888-GO-FALDO (463-2536) / www.GoFaldo.com
POSTURE The most common fault I see in posture is too much tension in the arms and shoulders (see picture 1). Sometimes this is caused from a driver being too long and upright in lie angle. Today’s drivers have a lie angle that is similar to your 5 iron. All your clubs get one degree flatter as the club gets half inch longer. So, if your 5 iron has 60 degrees of lie angle, your driver should have around 55 degrees. Unfortunately, most drivers cannot be bent in a loft and lie machine. Naturally you will be a little taller in your posture with a driver compared to your 9 iron, but it is real important to get some relaxed arm hang. Hands should be under chin. For you shorter golfers, I would prefer to have the relaxed arm hang which will cause the driver to sit on the ground a little toe up. (see picture 2)
Picture 1
Picture 2
AIM AND ALIGNMENT The most common fault here is shoulders aligned left (see picture 3). This can be caused from two things, ball position too far forward or compensation for your slice. The more it goes right the more we aim left. Very critical to get squared up and get your feet, knees, hips and shoulders on a line parallel to your target line (see picture 2). Lay some clubs or sticks on the ground when you practice and have a friend stand behind you to help.
Picture 3
Picture 4
BALL POSITION Ball position too far forward is a common fault we see with the driver (see picture 4). This can be caused by not having enough loft on your driver and you are doing whatever necessary to get it up in the air. Remember, having it too far forward will start to effect shoulder alignment, too much left. Once you get your sticks down for alignment, lay a stick down perpendicular to your target line or foot line, it should touch the inside of your left heal (picture 5).

GOLFER’S GUIDE NEWS Local Golf News from the Central Florida Area ■ CELEBRATION GOLF POISED TO EXPAND Celebration Golf Management LLC, which operates the Celebration Golf Club and four others in the Central Florida area, plans to expand statewide within the next few years. Gene Garrote, president and principal of Celebration Golf Management LLC, said the firm focuses on quality golf courses in primary visitor destinations. In the Orlando area, Celebration Golf Management owns and manages Legends Golf & Country Club in Clermont; The Golden Bear Club in Windermere; Kings Ridge in Clermont; Stoneybrook West in Winter Garden and Celebration Golf Club in Celebration. The firm also owns and manages Crockett Ridge Golf Course in Kingsport, Tenn. and The International Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. “The recession has impacted golf courses across the country and the golfing industry as a whole,” Garrote said. “Our management model incorporates current economic conditions and, as the economy improves, we anticipate substantial opportunities to expand our portfolio of managing and owning golf courses and golf clubs throughout the state,” Garrote explained. ■ GOLFWEEK AMATEUR TOUR LAUNCHES IN MARCH The Golfweek Amateur Tour, formerly the Edwin Watts Tour, will open its 2011 season on March 19 at Black Bear GC in Eustis. Fifteen tournaments are scheduled on some of the finest courses in central Florida. “Last year we played a terrific schedule; this year our lineup is every bit as good” said Tom Mirus, Tour director. “We will be taking SPRING 2011

Spring 2011 the tour to some new courses this year. We are returning to Grand Cypress and Victoria Hills rejoins the lineup after renovating their greens last year. We are excited about the coming season. “We will again qualify fifty players (10 from each of the five flights) for the Tour Championship in October. It is being held in Hilton Head, SC now and the players that made the trip last year loved it. I am sure competition for the invitations will be strong again this year. Plus, our players competed for nearly $50,000 in prizes last year.” The Golfweek Amateur Tour/Orlando is the first Florida affiliate of the Golfweek Amateur Tour. There are local tours operating in 42 geographic areas with nationwide membership exceeding 3,000. The Senior (50 & up) flights will continue play on Saturdays with the regular flights. Senior players may choose to compete simultaneously in Regular flights for an additional surcharge. Senior players will qualify for the senior Tour Championship in November, which is slated to take place in Pinehurst, N.C. Players are placed in flights by handicap/ handicap-index. Golfers without indexes may submit recent scorecards to be assigned to a flight, subject to change based on tournament performance. All prizes in all flights are based on gross scores. Entry fees start as low as $80 and include course costs, range balls and prizes.

They were part of a 577-player field spread across the beautiful courses at Palmetto Dunes Resort and Palmetto Hall Plantation. Eric Baker (Lady Lake) placed 5th in Championship Flight. Other top finishers were David Parker (Orlando) 8th in A flight, Brian Bowman (Apopka) 4th in C flight, Len Benedetti (Indian Lake Estates) 10th, also in C flight. In November 13 senior players traveled to Pinehurst, NC to represent the tour in the senior national tournament played at the National GC/Pine Needles/Mid Pines courses. Bill Foster (Villages) and Dennis Brady (Melbourne) tied for 5th in Championsip flight. Tim Sobitz (Oviedo) took 3rd in B flight. The website (www.orlandoagt.com), provides tour visibility and awareness, providing easy access for members and new players wishing to join in the fun. Tournaments average nearly 100 players. The Order of Merit points list determines the invitations to the national tournament as well as Player of the Year in each flight. In 2009, Chad Frank (Sanford), Dennis Cargo (Orlando), and Arnie Guerra (Melbourne) earned Player of the Year in the Championship, A, and B flights respectively. Mike Salik (St. Augustine) took the C flight and James Rearden (Orlando) took the D flight. Steve Maddox (Lakeland) and Robbie Robinson (Kissimmee) captured the Senior Championship & Senior A flight awards, respectively. Arnie Guerra (Melbourne) took the Senior B title.
