lack Jack's Crossing is the new masterpiece in West Texas designed by hall of fame golfer Lanny Wadkins. The course is set against the back drop of the majestic mountains of the Big Bend National Park -- a place every Texan should visit. “It is the most spectacular site in Texas,” Wadkins said. “I don’t think there is anything like it anywhere in the state. I’ve seen a lot of courses but never one like this, you won’t believe some of the views from the mountains.” The course is already becoming known as one of the most incredible golf experiences in Texas - ask anyone who has played it. After your round, there are numerous other ways to pass the day. In addition to the golf, folks can ride horses, play 'real cowboy' at the cowboy action shoot, bike, hike or shoot sporting clays. Golf in the Piney Woods Cypresswood Golf Course is one of the most prominent daily fee golf complexes in the Houston, Texas area. The Tradition, a Keith Foster designed course, once again hosted the 1st stage of the PGA Qualifying school in 2011. The Cypress Course, Golf Digest’s ranking of ‘Best New Course’ when it opened in 1989, has remained one of Houston Golfers’ favorite courses. Cypresswood’s ‘Play Better Golf’ program continues in 2012 under the direction of Tirrel Baymon. Look for lesson and tournament opportunities throughout the year, as well as instructional pieces in Golfer’s Guide and on their website at www.cypresswood.com. Another great change in 2012 is the 8

Golf in South Central Texas

Our most northern course in the Hill Country area is Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle. A terrific and enjoyable venue, Plum Creek is built on the old Neeley Ranch and hints of the old ranch add to the rustic nature of the course. New ownership and management came in 2011, and the course quickly responded to the care and attention it lacked for so long. Golfers are once again thrilled with the conditions and are enjoying the private

club-like customer service. In New Braunfels, The Bandit Golf Club remains the steady, well-conditioned course it is known for being. Beautifully overseeded for lush, green grass lies in the fairways (tees and fairways, too) for winter play, the course is challenging and fun with a layout that can accommodate every golfer’s style. A convenient meeting place to play unforgettable golf – The Bandit will steal your heart!

South of downtown San Antonio, The Republic is still quite the surprise to those coming from out-of-town. Quietly resting along the Salado Creek, The Republic is that peaceful venue that really feels like an escape…a vacation. With ample fairways and large greens, the course sports a layout that truly defines it as solid golf. The Republic Golf Club’s banquet room completes the total package for tournaments, charity events, weddings and parties. The Buckhorn Golf Course is still winning hearts out west! People who have

not played the course are often surprised at how good this course is. Golfers love The Buckhorn because it is such a fun and fair course, but don’t let it fool you – it can be as challenging as you want it to be depending on the tees you play. A spacious ‘great room’ which can accommodate large or small groups sports the fun, casual atmosphere you’d hope to find at The Buckhorn. A fun course and terrific banquet room make The Buckhorn the ideal spot for tournaments of all kinds and sizes!

Coastal Golf Oso Beach Golf Course and the Lozano Golf Center are the mainstay of public golf in Corpus Christi. Incredibly popular and highly revered by the local golfers and the Winter Texans that make their way south every year, the courses have seen a resurgence in play due in large part to improved course conditions and customer service. And, it’s not just the locals taking notice. Golf coaches from as far away as La Vernia were noticing improvements on the courses and the professional operations as their teams competed in a tournament at both courses last year. Foresight Golf, which now manages both courses, strives to return the courses to the terrific conditions they sported when people

like Hogan, Snead, Nelson and Zaharias walked their fairways. This goal seems to be on track as The Lozano Golf Center was awarded the ‘Best Course’ title in the Corpus Christi Caller Times ‘Readers Choice Awards’. Stay tuned for more improvements this year as the plans start taking shape to renovate the Lozano Executive Course and practice area into an even better facility to learn, practice and grow in the game.

Designed by the team of Bechtol & Russel and Carter Moorish, Star Ranch Golf Club has claimed numerous awards since it debuted on the Central Texas golf scene. Golf Digest bestowed its 4-Star rating, and the Dallas Morning News named it one of the best values in the state of Texas. Undulating fairways, greens flanked by pristine white-sand bunkers, and more than 7,000 challenging yards to negotiate provide an enjoyable experience for both the novice and scratch golfer. The par-71, 18-hole semi-private golf course is renowned for its excellent yearround conditions, with Tif Eagle Greens and Tif Sport fairways, tees and roughs. On a perpetual mission to upgrade the facility and constantly improve their total golf experience, Star Ranch continues to improve drainage in its bunker complexes, packing them with new sand and providing their guests with even more reasons to arrive a few minutes early for some “bunker work.” Speaking of which, in 2007, the club unveiled a brand new practice facility featuring a grass driving range, a short-game area with chipping greens, practice bunkers and a putting green -- the perfect place to work on your game before, after or between rounds. Additionally, the 170-yard, par-3 15th was enhanced with the addition of a sparkling new waterfall, and Star Ranch has added a new fleet of golf carts. Hot Springs Village is Golfer’s Paradise By Steve Habel Special to The Golfers Guide

Nine courses and a true neighborhood vibe sets this gated community apart Nine golf courses – all different even though they were fashioned by the same design team – are the draws of Hot Springs Village, a 26,000-acres community set in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. Hot Springs Village, founded in the early 1970s, is located 17 miles north of Hot Springs and one of the nation’s most famous national parks and tourist attractions. It’s a serene resort community for residents of all ages and – with a population of nearly 13,000 – the world’s largest gated community. The community’s nine courses, all designed by the Maryland/Virginia-based firm of Ault, Clark & Associates, were opened incrementally over a 32-year stretch. The golf experience at HSV has remained consistent as the routings have aged, a testament to the due-diligence of Tom Clark and his team and the palate with which Clark was given work. Four of the courses at Hot Springs Village are among the top-ranked tracks in the Natural State. Each course stands on its own, be it via putting surface designs and green surrounds, to differing bunker styles to the rhythm of play on the tracks. “When these courses were designed, 18

018-020 Hot Springs Edit.indd 1

The Balboa Course at Hot Spring Village

we knew that the maj majority of the play would come from the forward tees,” Clark said. “Our routings, and our bunkers and the forced carries, make shots from those tees challenging while taking into consideration whom will be playing.” DeSoto was the first course built at the Village, opening in 1972. From the back tees, the par-72 course plays at a hearty 6,687 yards. The track was renovated in 2001 to add new forward tees and has three great finishing holes: the 518-yard par-5 16th, the 344-yard par-4 17th and the 500-yard par-5 closing hole. Opened in 1977, Cortez features a routing that winds tightly through the trees and brings water into play on nine of its holes. Many of the course’s holes also bring elevation changes into play and the greens complexes on Cortez are exciting and demanding. The 173-yard par-3 eighth is an all-carry drive over a huge lake to a shallow, well-protected putting surface. The ninth, a 393-yard par-4, heads straight uphill off the tee and on the approach adding 30-some yards to each shot. No. 10 is one of the Village’s toughest holes, a 425-yard par-4 moving downhill then back up and around a tree stationed at the focal point of the dogleg right to a fairway

that’s rolling and off-camber. Coronado, which opened in 1982, is the only executive-length golf course in Hot Springs Village, playing to a par of 62. But don’t be fooled – Coronado is as challenging from 150 yards as any in the Village. “It is the hardest course in the Village to shoot par,” Paul said. There are no sand bunkers at Coronado, and a three-hour round is the norm. Balboa first welcomed play in 1987. The legendary Sam Snead was brought in to help with the course’s design and even was on hand for the course’s opening, which was rained out. The course features fairways that are flatter and more wide-open and has fewer sand traps than other Village golf courses, allowing golfers to make a mistake or two and still recover. Golf Digest rated Balboa No. 7 in the state’s best rankings for 2005-2006. Opened in 1991, Ponce de Leon is a favorite among lower handicap golfers. Carded at a challenging 6,946 yards from the back tees, the course hosted qualifying rounds for the PGA Nationwide Tour for three consecutive years. Golf Digest and Arkansas Business Journal ranked the Ponce de Leon golf course No. 3 in state for 2005. John Daly, fresh off his win in the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick in Indiana, drove all night to be at the Monday opening of Ponce de Leon, only to be greeted by rain and wet conditions. Daly set up shop on the range and pounded six irons through the back of the practice area as a crowd of about 3,000 onlookers watched in wonder. The only true private course at Hot Springs Village is Diamante, which opened in 1995 and was ranked as the top course in Arkansas by Golf Digest from 1997 to 2002. Its unique design plays like five incredible Hot Springs Village golf courses in one. Carded at 7,560 yards from its back set of five tees, every shot hit on Diamante has its own challenges. In 2009, Golf Digest labeled Diamante as the 38th most difficult course in the United States. The course hosted the Nationwide Tour’s First Tee Arkansas Classic for four consecutive years from 2001 until 2004. 2012 ISSUE 1

018-020 Hot Springs Edit.indd 2

Magellan opened in 1996 and began as a golf school with three holes. It’s one of the shorter tracks in the Village (at 6,494 yards) but its tricky greens get the best of most golfers. Magellan is long on great golf holes, so golfers shouldn’t be fooled by the length on the scorecard. “Some of the best holes of golf in the Village are here,” Paul said. It was ranked by Golf Digest as the 5th Best Course in Arkansas in 2000. The 27-hole Isabella course has as many ups and down and twists and turns as a rollercoaster. The original 18 holes, now called the Nina and the Pinta, were completed in September 2000 and the course was ranked as the No. 1 in Arkansas by Golf Digest and the Arkansas Business Journal. In 2006 the Santa Maria nine was added to give Isabella loads of flexibility and plenty of options. Each of the nines was routed with wide fairways, beautiful scenery and five sets of tees. The newest course in the village’s family is Granada, a rollicking good time at 7,115 yards from the back set of five tees. Opened in the fall of 2004, Granada is arguably the most scenic course in the Village. Granada’s par-3s are testing; three are at least 205 yards from the back tees, and the par-5 15th weighs in at a whopping 586 yards, with water, trees and sand all coming into play. One of the best and most difficult holes on the course is the 465-yard par-4 17th, which has a green 55 yards from front to back. The Cortez Course at Hot Spring Village

Select Tees that Make the Game Fun

O

ne way to enhance your enjoyment of golf is to play the tees on golf courses that best suit your game and the distance you hit the ball. Not only will this give you a realistic chance to reach the greens in regulation, but it will also reduce the time it takes to play. The next time you go to the course ask yourself the following questions to determine the best tees for you: 1. If I hit my average tee shot on the par 4 holes, can I reach the green comfortably on my second shot with a club reasonable for the design of the green? Sometimes this could be a short iron and sometimes a fairway wood or hybrid.

By Tom Olson Director of Play Better Golf Foresight Golf

2. If there is a hazard or forced carry from a tee, can my average drive, not best drive, make it safely to the landing area? Take into consideration the wind and weather conditions as well. If you can answer yes to both of those questions you are very likely playing the golf course the way the architect intended for you to play the holes. Remember that golf is an individual sport and the variety of tees we have on courses is not intended to reduce the challenge. Different tees are there to enhance your enjoyment of the game and those around you. Take advantage of these tee options on courses and you’ll walk off after the round with a smile on your face much more frequently.

Let 2012 be the year you work on your game, and do it with Foresight Golf! Our Play Better Golf – The Foresight Golf Way is a unique program that provides quality instruction at affordable rates. Accuracy is at a premium at Sun City Texas’s White Wing Golf Club By Steve Habel Special to The Golfers Guide

B

efore its development at the end of the 1990s, the land that encompasses the Sun City Texas community here a half-hour north of Austin was rolling Hill Country pastureland filled with mesquites, elm, oaks, cacti amongst the rock and broken into sections by Berry Creek and Cowan Creek. Golfers will see that harsh terrain on the edges of the development and its golf courses, but at White Wing Golf Club – the second of three tracks opened for play on the massive master-planned, age-restricted community – nature was kept as part of the challenge. At White Wing GC, accuracy is at a premium due mainly to the more than 20,000 red and white oaks, elms and cedar trees that were left untouched when the course was routed. Many of those trees are strategically located and must be negotiated during a round. Designed by Billy Casper and Greg Nash, White Wing GC was opened in 2001 and plays at a testing 6,718 yards from its back set of four tees (which very few folks play). The most popular tee box for the residents of Sun City Texas are the Blue tees (5,781 yards), which still carry a rating of 69.7 and slope of 123. The terrain at White Wing GC is mildly rolling with several tee shots and approaches that play uphill or downhill, along manicured fairways that while tree-lined, present ample room off the tee. The gently raised green complexes have large, undulating putting surfaces that are protected by mounding and bunkering, with enough recovery room for up and down opportunities. There are 55 soft sand bunkers (I really counted them) and water comes into play on just three holes as the routing takes advantage of the area’s natural features. Both Berry and Cowan Creeks do come into play on several holes, but are dry during the summer time (or, like these days, in times of drought) and provide for nothing more than a hard-to-find or lost ball. Often compared to the nearby Sun City Texas’s first course, Legacy Hills, White Wing isn’t quite as long, but is definitely tighter due to oak tree lined fairways and a few strategically place oak trees right in the middle of the fairway. Four holes in particular Nos. 3, 6, 8 and 14 - are surrounded by trees on both 2012 ISSUE 1

023 White Wing Edit.indd 1

sides of each narrow fairway and any wayward shot will likely earn golfers a bogey or worse. The most difficult holes White Wing GC offers are its two-shotters, which include the 392-yard fourth (requires an accurate tee shot between fairway bunkers, followed by an approach over a bunker into a multi-level green), the 413-yard bunkerless, doglegright sixth (which is narrowed by trees in the prime landing area) and the 438-yard 15th (a dogleg-left that moves around a large bunker at the elbow and heads downhill, then up, to a putting surface guarded by sand on the left front). Casper and Nash’s adherence to landscape preservation is illustrated on the 379-yard par-4 eighth, as a towering oak stands right in the middle of the fairway. White Wing GC’s best hole might be the 556-yard, par-5 18th. Depending on the clubhouse rules on the day you play, there are two routes to the hole on this split fairway. Play is predominantly to the left, but on certain occasions the right fairway is open, and calls for a direct shot off the tee over Berry Creek. From the back tees, the golfer can make up his own mind, but the left route asks the player to drive off the elevated tee to the fairway, which slopes gently toward the creek. The second shot is across the creek to the elevated green, which is protected by a large oak tree. Most of the putting surfaces have undulations; some more than others. An example is the green at the 381-yard par-4 14th, which features a deep valley in the middle and requires an accurate approach if the golfer wants to avoid a three-putt. Natural flora, fauna and plenty of wildlife will be seen at White Wing GC. Don’t be surprised to see deer, roadrunners, Texas-sized jackrabbits or an occasional armadillo appear during the round and the experience here – which is available to the general public without restriction. White Wing GC is on par with the area’s top daily fee and mid-level country club courses. White Wing GC features a nine-acre practice range, a large putting green and separate areas for short-game work, such as chipping and sand shots. Its clubhouse is expansive and features a comfortable restaurant and grill area to settle up on those on-course wagers.

Vaaler Creek Golf Club No. 19 on Golfweek’s “Best New Courses” List

I

t’s business as usual at Vaaler Creek, and that means an unusually challenging design, impeccable course conditions and rates that are hard to find in the Texas Hill Country Vaaler Creek Golf Club, a five-star facility just up the road from San Antonio and less than an hour from the capital city of Austin, remains in near-perfect condition, having outlasted the worst drought in decades. That’s the good news. The even better news is that the plans for the new pavillion are moving forward rapidly, and soon daily-fee players and Vaaler Creek members will have even more reason to call the club their “home.” Architect Michael Lowry’s first signature golf course design, Vaaler Creek is a visually stunning and uniquely memorable layout that challenges accomplished players with plenty of greenside bunkers, man-made waterways, elevation changes, undulating greens and tiered fairways. The championship layout, measuring more than 6,800 yards from the tips, is a daunting challenge. The back nine, which opened to the public in July 2007, was joined in 2009 by the complementary front. Both sides feature spectacular panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country, an abundance of live oaks, and rolling topography. Located within the Rockin’ J Ranch, a community dedicated to resort living and championship golf set upon more than 1,000 rolling acres just south of the charming town of Blanco, golfers can expect a quality of play “comparable to a high-end resort in San Antonio,” at a very attractive price. The course is semi-private, with property owners of the Rockin’ J receiving a complimentary basic golf membership, which also may be purchased by non-property owners. For more frequent players, Vaaler Creek offers an annual full membership, which entitles individual 24

i d rounds d d i the h year, members to unlimited during including cart fees. Out-of-town golfers now have the opportunity to Stay & Play at Vaaler Creek – brand new, well-furnished two- and three-bedroom condos situated around the No. 10 tee box will serve as guest accommodations, and start at $175 per night. Cloaked by two large live oaks trees that rise up through its center and expand out over a large pond, the 5,550-square-foot deck overlooking the 18th fairway is the centerpiece of the tournament and event facilities, and the place to be for a cold beverage when your round is complete. The deck is popular for weddings, tournaments and reunions, and is near the future site of the stunning new clubhouse, which will be located directly behind the 18th green and feature great views of the course and the surrounding countryside. Vaaler Creek’s professional event staff can handle any size outing or tournament, and will customize a package specifically to your needs. Packages are around $75 per person, depending on the size of the group. A beautiful driving range and a giant teeing area welcome golfers who want to warm up or revisit a few swing thoughts from the day’s round. Vaaler Creek has also recently introduced a short game area, complete with separate areas for chipping and sand shots. Vaaler Creek is just 40 minutes North of San Antonio and one hour Southwest of Austin. The entry is one mile South of the junction of Hwy 281 and FM 32. For more information on the pricing, packages or playing options offered by Vaaler Creek Golf Club, please visit www.vaalercreekgolfclub.com or call (830) 833-0706. alado Del Rio was lengthened to more than 6,500 yards, and thanks to additional mounding, renovated bunkering and an improved drainage system, it will be far more enjoyable to play more days of the year. Salado Del Rio might be the more scenic of the two courses with its tree-lined fairways, additional mounding around the greens and forced carries over hazards, some you can play out of, some you can’t. The stretch of holes from the fourth through the eighth is particularly breathtaking as they play along and across Salado Creek, offering more pronounced doglegs and the most dramatic elevation changes on either course

he La Loma Grande Course, originally developed by the legendary A.W. Tillinghast, was built by the soldiers themselves in the early 1930s. It is the only military golf course to host a PGA Tour event; two Texas Opens that were won by Hall of Famers Arnold Palmer and Gene Littler. Now it has been returned to the dream of Tillinghast’s original design. La Loma Grande has always been the flatter of the two layouts, but most regular players also consider it the more difficult course with its pushed-up greens, particularly on the back nine, and its diabolical bunkering and mounding around the greens.

The Comeback Kingsland’s Packsaddle reborn as Lighthouse Country Club Everything old is new again at the newly christened Lighthouse Country Club in Kingsland, about 15 minutes west of Marble Falls on the Colorado River in the fringes of the Texas Hill Country. Lighthouse CC was formerly called Packsaddle Country Club but changed its name, its logo and its outlook with new ownership. Rick and Mercy Howe from Midland, took possession of the course on Sept. 16, 2011 with a vision of making Lighthouse Country Club one of the premier facilities in the Hill Country . “We are happy to have a wonderful course and facility here in Kingsland and are excited about moving forward,” said Pryor, who has been associated with the course in its previous incarnations since 2003. “We 40

things here feel like we have a good plan for thing – we know it’s not going to be easy because of the way the golf world is these days – but we will be diligent.” Lighthouse CC’s course has always been known as a track that could be spectacular if given the right amount of attention and care. The layout is in the shadow of the Packsaddle Mountains and is minutes from the headwaters of Lake LBJ and features several holes with granite outcroppings and narrow landing areas. First opened in 1968, the golf course was completely renovated and rerouted in 2006 by Pryor, Jerry Slack and legendary golf architect Leon Howard. Featuring serpentine fairways and broad vistas defined by native Texas grasses and flowers, the

course at Lighthouse CC plays to 6,855 yards from its tournament tees. Bermuda was replaced by TifEagle turf on the course’s greens in July, but because of the lingering Texas drought, the putting surfaces never had a good chance to take root before the transfer of ownership. Pryor decided to close the track from the day the new owners took charge until Oct. 29 to “unshock the greens and let them grow.” Pryor said the only routing change undertaken by the newest ownership group was to change the closing hole from a long par-4 to a testing 185-yard par-3. The move was made to reclaim additional land for real estate endeavors. Lighthouse CC offers all levels of golfers an opportunity to enjoy themselves. There are 29 sand bunkers on the track, the greens vary from 4,000-6,400-square feet and have beautiful undulations that will challenge all comers, especially those seeing the course for the first time. The course’s best stretch of holes is on its front-nine, where the aforementioned granite outcropping comes into play on the 534-yard par-5 sixth (which features a split fairway) and the 143-yard par-3 No. 7, which requires precise accuracy and a deft putting touch. But the encounter with rocks really sets the table for the front-nine’s toughest two holes: two demanding two-shotters – the 421-yard eighth and the 443-yard ninth. No. 8 is played over a pond to a fairway that widens as the player takes the most chance across the water. Long hitters challenging the water down the right side will find more room in the landing area while those playing more conservative to the left and will have a narrow fairway and a long approach to a green surrounded by bunkers. The ninth plays downhill to a landing area guarded on the right by a tree and then 2012 ISSUE 1

uphill to a green flanked on both sides by sand. The back-nine has its share of quaint holes and demanding challenges. Players love the look from the tee at the 133-yard par-3 12th, which plays downhill. Three of the par-4s on the back are carded at 378 or less, but because of the course’s rolling hills, the holes are not as easy as one would expect. The bunkerless 412-yard 15th is the longest and most demanding par-4 on the back-nine. With multiple teeing areas and contoured fairways, Lighthouse CC offers golfers of all skill levels the opportunity to have an enjoyable experience. A good short game and the ability to lag putts well are important as a player navigates the putting surface’s subtle challenges. Lighthouse CC, which actually sports a 38-tall lighthouse on property, also offers a charming clubhouse and adjacent bar and grill and has become a popular area destination for a great evening meal or a night out of music and dancing at those times when the club brings in a live band. Eagle Pointe Golf Club Eagle Pointe’s rolling terrain and multi-level tees, and especially its commitment to higher eduction and Junior Golf, has “elevated” the game in the Houston area.

I

f you’ve been playing golf in the Houston area for very long -- or ever, actually -- you know that the typical golf course is “Texas-flat,” with the practice tee often the highest point on the property. There is certainly nothing wrong with that, as some of the most renowned courses in the state have that very same characteristic. But Eagle Pointe Golf Club, 52

052-055 Eagle Pointe.indd 1

located less than 35 minutes from downtown Houston off I-10, is not a “typical” golf course. Designed by noted Houston architect Rick Forester, the pride of the Mont Belvieu community attracts players from across the region who wish to play the game in three dimensions on it rolling fairways and dramatic elevation changes of up to 40 feet. Forester has “un-leveled

the playing field” at Eagle Pointe, and the result is a 4-Star rating from the Houston Chronicle and “must-play” status for golfers of every level of ability.. Strategically placed bunkering and exceptionally penal water hazards direct exc play through towering stands of mature pla pines, which, when combined with the pin secluded, peaceful atmosphere of the sec par-71 track -- there are no homes on 17 of the 18 holes -- and its steeply tilted, undulating greens, more resembles the Sandhills of South Carolina than the heart of Southeast Texas. Eagle Pointe’s closing stretch is indicative of its inherent challenge, and is the perfect way to close out a great round of golf. The 15th is the meanest par-3 on the course, with a two-tiered green and menacing bunkers right and left. The long, par-4 16th features multiple water hazards and a small, narrow green. The par-5 17th is the best birdie opportunity over the four-hole stretch, provided 2012 ISSUE 1

052-055 Eagle Pointe.indd 2

you don’t find yourself in one of the many sand bunkers guarding the putting surface. Finally, the par-4 finishing hole requires two shots (and sometimes many, many more) over water to a well-protected green. You would expect a first-class golf club like Eagle Pointe to offer first-class instruction, and the teaching professionals at Eagle Pointe, led by Class A PGA Professional Jeff Strong, provide the individual attention that yields real results. They work with players of all skill levels, and the students themselves decide the subject matter of their individual lesson: putting, chipping, bunker play, posture and alignment, swing fundamentals or course management. The practice facility, including the oversized driving range and opposite-end teaching area, provides the private environment for optimum learning. There is a dedicated pitching green with practice bunkers, a specially designed bunker adjacent to the practice tee

for full fairway bunker shots, and two areas to practice putting. Playing lessons on the championship course also are available. The beautiful Golf Shop at Eagle Pointe is fully stocked with the best brands in equipment, accessories and apparel -- everything to make your round a day to remember. What they don’t have in stock can be special ordered, and their Golf Shop Gift Certificates are perfect for friends and family or to reward clients or employees. If you’ve never thought about joining a golf club before, this is the time and Eagle Pointe is the place. Annual memberships are available for both individuals and families, and are priced at a great low rate. As a member you get to play any day of the week for just the price of a cart fee. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn the “details” of the golf course, to work seriously on improving your game, and to get to know other golfers who love Eagle Pointe. If you’re a decision-maker at an area business you should seriously 54

052-055 Eagle Pointe.indd 3

consider an annual Corporate Membership at Eagle Pointe. The superlative and scenic golf course is the perfect place to entertain customers, clients, associates and employees (a great reward for a job well done). Residents of Mont Belvieu (a verifiable established residence within the city limits) are eligible for special Resident individual and family golf memberships. You can get information on all of the Eagle Pointe membership possibilities by calling the Golf Shop for details. And Eagle Pointe Golf Club is an excellent choice for your next group outing of 16 or more players, with its great location, natural beauty, flexibility in arrangements and their ability to provide activities for non-golfers as well. From wedding receptions to luncheons to fundraising parties, the Eagle Pointe staff is standing by to host your special event. Perhaps the most compelling reason for playing or joining Eagle Pointe is its determination to give back to the game, and the community, with its commitment to Junior Golf and its annual

fundraiser, the STPGA Foundation Pro Am. Eagle Pointe’s PGA Professional, Jeff Strong, has placed an emphasis on the game’s future by providing juniors with the resources and opportunities necessary to get involved in golf. Six years ago Strong volunteered his facility and his energy to create an event that would raise money and promote a worthy cause. “Supporting junior golf is great for the future of the game, and it’s great for the kids who are helped through the STPGA Foundation” said Strong, who served as a captain in the 2009 Joe Black Cup matches and was voted 2009 STPGA Golf Professional of the Year. “The tournament helps us give something back to the game, just as our predecessors did when we were young golfers.” In its first six years, the STPGA Foundation Pro Am has raised more than $70,000 for junior golf. Most notably,

2012 ISSUE 1

052-055 Eagle Pointe.indd 4

the tournament raised nearly $20,000 in 2011. The money raised goes toward scholarships and junior golf programs, and companies and individuals who get involved have a chance to contribute to this most worthy cause. “This tournament has had great local support because the community knows the importance of the cause and the impact it has for junior golfers to play the game or to further their education,” Strong said. “Their involvement speaks volumes about the quality of the people who live, work and play golf in our area.” And that does, indeed, elevate the game. Bringing it to the Course

By Tirrel Baymon Director of Play Better Golf at Cypresswood Golf Club 713-443-4864 tirrelb@foresightgolf.net

A

re you Dr. Jekyl on the driving range and Mr. Hyde on the golf course? Do you get on the range and hit incredible golf shots? After that do you go to the course and hit the ball all over the map? THE PROBLEM What is that you do when you are on the range that you are not doing on the golf course? Chances are that on the range your practice sessions are very easy because you have not challenged yourself to perform. The comfort in knowing that you have thirty to forty more balls in front of you may ease up the mentality in which you approach swinging the club on the driving range. 1. Create a hitting station on the range. Lay down three clubs. One club will reflect your target line. One club will reflect your body and feet alignment. The final club will lay perpendicular to your body line and show you your ball position. 2. Pick a very specific target on the range do not settle for large dispersions from left to right. (The idea is to understand that you if miss hit this ball on

58

058. Lesson Edit.indd 1

the range with respect to your specific target, where would that same miss end up on the golf course.) 3. Every shot counts. (Challenge yourself to get a certain number out of a certain number in the direction of your target. If you miss hit the ball and it goes the proper distance and direction of your target, guess what, that is a good shot.) 4. With relation to step 3 you will find that you have developed your own personal pre shot routine. (Embrace the pressure of working on three out of five balls in the direction of your target. Create a level of higher intensity in your practice.) If you can answer yes to both of those questions you are very likely playing the golf course the way the architect intended for you to play the holes. Remember that golf is an individual sport and the variety of tees we have on courses is not intended to reduce the challenge. Different tees are there to enhance your enjoyment of the game and those around you. Take advantage of these tee options on courses and you’ll walk off after the round with a smile on your face much more frequently.

Beneath the towering Oaks and sturdy Pines that permeate Timber Creek Golf Club, golfers are enjoying the game like never before. General Manager Mike Griswold and his staff are stressing the fun aspects of golf, and developing an uncommon rapport with their customers. “People who play here frequently call this their club and have a sense of belonging,” Griswold chimed. “They don’t pay dues to get that.” The course’s culture is equaled if not surpassed by the design of Jay Riviere, who incorporated dense woodlands, winding creeks and rock outcroppings to create a splendid layout just 20 miles from downtown Houston. 60

060-061 Timber Creek.indd 1

“Our course isn’t target golf, but the fairways are really defined,” Griswold said. “Jay Riviere’s genius is that you know where you want to hit it and where you don’t want to hit it off every tee box. There’s no guessing.” With its classic Clubhouse Pub atmosphere and an eclectic menu that appeals to virtually every taste, the Legends Grill at Timber Creek is the place to meet, mingle and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres during the regular Friday afternoon Happy Hour, weekly from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Open daily from 11 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, Legends Grill welcomes golfers and non-golfers alike to enjoy their daily Lunch Specials every day until 4 p.m., and their favorite libations anytime.

Evergreen Point Golf Club Evergreen Point is in an area steeped d in Texas history, just minutes from the San Jacinto Battlefield where General Sam Houston defeated the Mexican Army in 1836 to gain independence for Texas. The club is the culmination of the dream of the Hazelwood family, who in the mid-1990s purchased 205 acres to build the course in memory of their mother, Betty Hazelwood. Since then Evergreen Point has steadily enhanced its reputation with an exceptionally challenging layout, outstanding practice facilities, affordable rates, and a Bar & Grill that ranks among the best restaurants in the region. Evergreen Point is a demanding track that requires concentration on every shot, with water in direct play on 15 holes and more than 40 bunkers shaping shots and moulding strategy. Golfers that are easily distracted by the beauty of the magnolias, creeks and stone bridges that dot the property will quickly find themselves on the back end of the batting order, with a closing nine that ranks among the area’s most challenging facing them on the way in. Evergreen Point’s all-grass practice range is impeccably maintained, and the putting and chipping greens have plenty of undulation to work on virtually any situation you might encounter during your round. The fully stocked Golf Shop offers the best in equipment, accessories and apparel, and the inventory of their new Online Pro Shop has been growing by the day. Evergreen Point offers daily-fee access, but membership opportunities abound, while their tournament and golf outing professionals dedicate themselves to the success of each golf event, offering a variety of hassle-free packages 64

customized to fit your individual needs. But the true hidden gem on the Evergreen Point property is undoubtedly the clubhouse Bar & Grill, which is open to the public seven days a week, starting with a breakfast to write home about, and staying open until 7 p.m. with a full bar available throughout the day. Offering friendly service and exceptional food, golfers and non-golfers alike relax with their favorite beverage and favorite golf course cuisine while enjoying the natural, secluded surroundings. The extensive menu includes Bailey’s Hot Wings, Egg Rolls, Boudin Balls, a wide variety of sandwiches, and their famous burgers, which by themselves are worth the price of “admission.” The grilled chicken sandwich paired with fried green beans is a fan favorite. The bread has a mild sweetness, with fresh vegetables stacked high and topped off with grilled onions. The extra-long fried green beans with Hazelwood’s special seasoning and ranch dip are so good they’ve developed a cult following of sorts. The Bar & Grill area is great for hosting parties and special events, and there is ample seating for outings, banquets, wedding receptions and corporate events. There is additional outside seating to accommodate 200 people for tournament breakfast and lunch. If you’re looking for a golfer-friendly facility with a challenging course, a slice of Texas history, and the hospitality that only a family can provide, visit Evergreen Point soon. The Hazelwoods would love to have you. For more information on tee times, memberships, golf outings or banquets, log on to www.evergreenpointgolf.com, or call (281) 837-9000.

The Golf Club New facility, new TaylorMade technology highlight new year for Austin’s most trusted name in golf equipment

T

he Golf Club, Austin’s most trusted source for golf equipment, has moved to a new location at 1315 W. Ben White Blvd. with an expanded inventory of the hottest new clubs and the most affordable and best selection of used equipment. And while the facilities may be new, they’ve maintained the same attention to detail, customer loyalty and fair pricing that has sustained them for many years. In 2012 The Golf Club will be fitting many of their customers with the radical new clubs from TaylorMade. The new RocketBallz series, includes drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons that have revolutionized the way clubs are designed and manufactured, and have already caused a stir on the Professional Tours. The “tune-able” RocketBallz driver provides extreme distance, and is engineered with Flight Control Technology for easy face angle and loft tuning. Built for speed, power and ridiculous distance, the RocketBallz Driver is available in RBZ and RBZ Tour models. “I actually laughed the first time I hit this 3-wood,” said the already long-hitting Justin Rose of the RocketBallz fairway metals. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Carrying a 3-wood 284 yards? Those are driver numbers. Bring on the par-5s.” And the RocketBallz irons have certainly earned their name. Engineered with metalwood construction and fastflexing faces, golfers can attack from anywhere, confidently, with maximum ball speed and pinpoint accuracy. The RBZ irons’ thin, fast-flexing face promotes high ball speed, long distance, and improved accuracy. “We already have the best service, and now we have one of the largest inventories in the area,” said owner/operator John Rowsey. “We have smaller overhead and lower costs and we’re able to pass those savings along to our customers.” Add to that the personalized service and an easy-to-access location in South Austin, and you can see why The Golf Club is getting so much attention. For more information on The Golf Club call (888) 453-0102 or log on to www.teegolfclub.com.
