Playing the Game, Learning the Game, Experiencing the Game
Welcome to Swan Lake Golf Resort

ome come to play the game. Others, to learn or perfect their skill at it. There are those that come to escape it all, and others that seek to take it all in. Whatever the reason, whichever the pursuit, a trip to the Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana will undoubtedly deliver the desired result as there is no other destination in Indiana or the entire Midwest that provides such a complete and diverse experience as you will find while visiting with the Swan. Home to 36 holes of championship golf, a renowned golf academy, a host of recreational activities, an onsite hotel with multiple dining options, vast meeting and event space and a full-service spa, Swan Lake has something for everyone no matter the intent of the visit. As a golf resort, it has no rival in the region, as a destination for such a vast array of activities it has become the place to experience in the Hoosier State and far beyond those borders. 8

“We offer a little bit of everything for people to do at Swan Lake,” said Director of Golf Pat Bayley. “The opportunities are unlimited around here as to what people can do.” While that is unquestionably true, playing the game and learning how to play it better are two of the primary pursuits at Swan Lake and certainly the ones that have put the resort on the map as it were. The resort hosts the renowned US Golf Academy at Swan Lake Resort, which boasts five PGA instructors and one LPGA professional on its staff. The academy has been named as a Golf Digest Top 100 Club Fitting facility, which is appropriate considering the institution’s commitment to crafting the game around a player’s swing and style. According to Bayley, the academy’s instructors don’t come with a philosophy in place but rather seek to build a program and a swing that fits the player. Given the vast makeup of amateur players, that philosophy makes perfect sense. 2011 ISSUE 2
008-011.Swan Lake.indd 2
“We don’t teach a particular method,” Bayley said. “Instead, we teach your method. We focus on strategies that fit a person’s particular swing. When you walk away from us we want to make sure you can go back to the strategy to keep improving the swing.” That philosophy, coupled with a complete instruction facility and a stateof-the-art club fitting program, has helped make the US Golf Academy a leading destination for game improvement in the Midwest. The academy, which offers both group and personal instruction led by PGA professionals, features all the latest technology including TrackMan, which measures and analyzes ball flight and trajectory using radar, and the Science in Motion Putting Lab, which uses ultrasound to measure the important parameters of the putting stroke. Combined with the unique “made for the individual” teaching philosophy, these technologies allow golfers to better understand their swing and then hone
naples.golfersguide.com

the techniques to create a consistent and effective one. Additionally, the center has been recognized nationally as a leading club fitting facility, ensuring that not only does the golfer have the correct swing, but they are swinging the right clubs for their game. The end result is an overall game improvement program that is truly unique and unrivaled in the region. “We really do it better than anyone else in the region,” Bayley said. “Considering our location and that we are open to the public, it really is a unique program that we offer.” It also doesn’t hurt that the US Golf Academy at Swan Lake is part of a resort that features a pair of championship golf courses that are among the finest in Indiana. The 36-hole Indiana National Golf Club is housed within the resort and has played host to collegiate national championships and some of the top amateur events in the state. Indiana National features two distinct and fair yet challenging layouts in the Black and Silver courses. 10
008-011.Swan Lake.indd 3
While the Black Course is considered the championship layout at Indiana National, both tracts feature significant challenges, perfect conditioning and the highest level of customer service. Both courses features water on 14 of the 18 holes, but with multiple teeing areas and fair yardages, can be fair to the most average of golfers while still challenging to the best of them. Both were designed by Al Humphrey and have received 4-star ratings in Golf Digest’s Places to Play. “Both the Black and Silver courses are challenging but fair layouts that will test all level of players,” Bayley said. “They are also two of the best conditioned courses in the region.” Generally speaking the more challenging of the two designs, the Black Course features quick greens and narrow fairways that are lined by trees. The abundance of water on the course demands an accurate touch and the strategic bunkering and swift greens call on a variety of shots and some steady nerves. Given the
naples.golfersguide.com
2011 ISSUE 2
6/2/11 3:26:23 PM
challenge of the Black Course, it’s likely a good thing the US Golf Academy is just steps from the layout. “The Black Course really requires golfers to hit every shot in their bag,” Bayley said. “It’s certainly a challenge, but it’s fair at the same time.” While perhaps not as stiff a challenge, the Silver Course has its fair share of difficulties as well. Like its sister course, the Silver Course features water on 14 holes and green complexes that will challenge both approach shots and the putter. The course is highlighted by the ninth hole, a long par-4 that requires accuracy both off the tee and to a difficult-to-hit green complex. Bayley considers the hole among the toughest at Indiana National, a tribute to the challenge that waits at the awardwinning resort. “The Silver Course is a little more generous off the tee,” Bayley said. “The fairways are a little wider, but there are still significant challenges for golfers of all skill levels.” While golf is most certainly at the core of the 600-acre Swan Lake Resort, there is
2011 ISSUE 2
008-011.Swan Lake.indd 4
plenty else to do as well. The full-service resort offers a hotel on property that offers multiple dining options, indoor and outdoor pools, a luxurious spa and other recreational activities outside of the golf. Considering the unrivaled instruction, the quality golf courses and all the other amenities, it comes as no surprise that the resort specializes in Stay-PlayLearn packages that combine all the great aspects of Swan Lake into one unforgettable experience. Visitors can customize their own experience with one-on-one instruction or join a particular school. “Our guests really get immersed in all the things there are to do at Swan Lake,” Bayley said. “Considering our location and everything we have to offer, it really is a unique place.” Visit Swan Lake this summer or early fall and you’ll add unforgettable to Bayley’s description of this special Hoosier destination. ince Rees Jones, dubbed the “Open Doctor” for his many makeovers of courses in advance of the U.S. Open, added the nine-hole East Course to complement the 18 holes previously constructed by his father Robert Trent Jones in 1964, public-access golf courses in Indiana have been fighting an uphill battle to keep up with the Joneses. Featuring 27 holes designed by two of the most acclaimed names in the history of golf course architecture, Columbus’ Otter Creek Golf Course has been ranked among the very best daily-fee layouts in the state of Indiana since it opened nearly a half-century ago. The well-manicured landscapes constructed by the father-son team gently intertwine with the natural contours found in this part of Southern Indiana. Utilizing the existing aspects of the land to assure each shot is a natural challenge, the Jones’ have distinguished Otter Creek as a championship golf course unique to all others. Today, golfers can create an 18-hole round by combining two of the three (East, West, North) nine-hole layouts. Even with scads of large, mature trees scattered throughout the property, Otter Creek is relatively wide open and water only comes into play on four of the 27 holes. Golf is More than a Passion, It’s a Living To almost one million Hoosiers, golf is a relaxing pastime, a frustrating hobby, or the ultimate test of skill pitting them against the course in a futile search for perfection. However, for over 21,000 Hoosiers, golf is how they make their living. Golf provides a significant direct benefit to the Indiana economy and for thousands of Indiana charities, it is a vital source of funding. Such were the findings of a recent study conducted by Indiana’s leading golf associations along with Golf 20/20 and SRI International. Indiana became the 21st state to complete an Economic Impact Study on the Game of Golf during the summer of 2010. Several state associations were involved in the process. The study was commissioned by the Indiana Golf Association and the Indiana Section of the PGA. Other associations that participated in the study were the Indiana Golf Course Owner’s Association, the Indiana Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Indiana Club Managers Association and the Indiana Department of Tourism. The Study was conducted by Golf 20/20 and SRI International. Golf 20/20 is an organization run by the World Golf Foundation and supported by all of the national leaders in the golf industry including the PGA of America, the USGA, the National Golf Course Owners
Association, the PGA Tour and the LPGA. SRI International was commissioned by Golf 20/20 to work with state and regional golf coalitions to conduct these economic impact studies around the country. The findings of the study came as no surprise to those closely associated with the golf industry. “The Economic Impact Study validates that golf is an economic engine that contributes substantially to the momentum of the Indiana economy,” said Linda Rogers, owner of Juday Creek Golf Course in Granger, Ind. and Vice President of the National Golf Course Owners Association. PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka concurred with Rogers’ statement. “The biggest benefit of these studies is the ability to show how golf benefits not only the 1 in 11 Americans who play, but entire communities which benefit from the jobs it creates, the green space it protects and the healthy recreation it provides for people of all ages,” said Steranka. The need for these studies became evident in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast. The Gulf Opportunity Zone Act was passed following Katrina. The Act allocated tax benefits and relief for businesses that had been affected by Hurricane Katrina. The bill specified that tax benefits would not apply to golf courses or country clubs, lumpContinued on page 43.

U.S. Golf Academy at Swan Lake Golf Resort
Learn to Score Better In this age of endless golf information, there are countless ways and means to learn to play the game of golf. You can follow the latest instruction article or video, take advice from the Internet or learn the old fashion way by taking advice from friends, based on the ideas they have seen, heard or read. Regardless, any or all of these approaches lead to continuous trial and error, usually leaving the player more confused and discouraged than improved. Eventually, the inevitable frustration drives a player to consider professional help, either in the form of a single lesson, or for many, the total emersion of attending a golf school or academy. For 40 years, the United States Golf Academy has been the choice of thousands of golfers looking for the satisfaction that comes from an improved golf game and the understanding of how the improvement was achieved. This is a successful operation achieved from longevity and positive “word of mouth” recommendations from our students, rather than slick marketing and false promises. The Academy’s promise is simple – a better golf game for each of our students! 40
040 Swan Lake.indd 1
The United States Golf Academy can make this promise for two reasons. First, our resident staff of PGA professionals is recognized throughout the golf industry for their knowledge and expertise is the areas of instruction and club fitting. Not only are they the people that the golfing public seeks out for advice, but they are also the experts sought by their peers in the golf industry. Second, you must have the technology to provide accurate data and feedback to maximize the student’s efforts. The United States Golf Academy uses the industry’s standards in golf swing, ball flight and putting analysis. The Trackman launch monitor and PuttLab diagnostic technologies are the most accurate and informative technologies available and they are used every day in the pursuit of a better golf game for our students. This combination of accurate data and human expertise allows our professionals to offer a clear understanding to our guests of what can be done and the easiest way to accomplish it. ing those facilities in with massage parlors, hot tub facilities, tanning salons, liquor stores and gambling establishments. The Gulf Opportunity Zone Act highlighted the fact that the golf industry needed to coordinate efforts in order to prove how the golf industry benefits society. To date, 22 state golf economic impact studies have been conducted and the findings certainly support the fact that golf is a viable industry producing a major benefit to state’s economies. “Studies on the state level impact of golf, such as the report for Indiana, illustrate how vital our industry is in terms of job creation, charitable contributions and environmental benefits”, said Steranka. “Golf is managed open green space which delights urban planners, a job creator which pleases mayors and governors and a model for fundraising which benefits thousands of charitable organizations,” added Steranka. Unemployment and job opportunities have obviously been major topics of discussion on the national level. The Indiana Study showed that over 21,000 jobs in Indiana are created through the golf industry. That number nationally is over one million. Those 21,000 jobs in Indiana account for a total wage income of $530 million. It’s well publicized that golf and charities work hand in hand. The PGA Tour gave over $108 million to charities in 2009 alone. What many people might not realize is that PGA Professionals from around the state and around the country work almost on a daily basis to assist charitable organizations who use golf as vital annual fundraisers. The Study found that in 2008, charitable giving by the Indiana Golf Industry topped the $42 million mark. Golf course owners, operators and PGA Professionals serve as access points for annual fundraising by hundreds if not thousands local service organizations on an annual basis. 2011 ISSUE 2
030,043 Golf Economics.indd 2
The Indiana Golf Foundation has been awarding scholarships since 1996 and has awarded nearly $300,000 in scholarship awards. The IGF kicked off a new Indiana Charities Day in 2010. With over 40 golf professionals from around the state participating in a 100 hole marathon event over $90,000 was raised for charity. Perhaps the largest finding from the Study is the fact that golf provides $ 909 million in direct revenue to the Indiana economy. Compare that number to other industries in the state and it paints a clear picture of how important the golf industry is to states economy. In Indiana, medical equipment manufacturing accounts for $5.8 billion to Indiana’s economy. Soybean production accounts for $2.4 billion to the economy and dairy products account for $640 million to Indiana’s economy. “To think an acre of golf delivers more economic impact than an acre of corn in Iowa or more than an acre of residential homes in Virginia demonstrated to me how important our sport is to the business communities we live in,” said Steranka. In the end, the findings of the Study in Indiana and nationwide are designed primarily to offset the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act and show state and national legislators the importance of golf as a viable, productive, beneficial industry across the country . That is exactly what the state golf associations involved hope to achieve when the Indiana golf community gathers to share the results of the Study with state legislators at an April 12 event at the Indiana Statehouse. “With the evidentiary support from the Economic Impact Study of the positive effect that golf has for Indiana through job creation, property tax generation, charitable giving, environmental stewardship and increased tourism, lawmakers will likely be more inclined to craft legislation that is favorable to the golf industry, “ said Rogers.

HILTON HEAD THE GOLF ISLAND
T
here are destinations that offer great golf. There are others that provide memorable beaches and water activities. There are those people enjoy for the entertainment, nightlife and shopping opportunities. Then there is Hilton Head Island, where every aspect of a memorable vacation experience comes together so nicely that many who come choose to make it their new or second home. Best known as the host of the PGA Tour’s Heritage at its famed Harbour Town Golf Links, the Hilton Head region, which extends into Bluffton on the mainland, is home to more than 20 resort and public courses, many of which have received national awards and recognition. Likewise, the area has emerged as a popular retirement or second-home destination with numerous private communities housing courses built by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye and Tom Fazio. For those just getting to know the island, there’s the Sea Pines Resort, which
58
058.HH edit.indd 1
is home to Harbour Town along with two other resort courses – The Ocean Course and Heron Point by Pete Dye. Two miles north up the island is Palmetto Dunes Resort, another popular destination featuring three championship layouts highlighted by the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course. Just off island, there’s Hilton Head National, a collaborative effort between Gary Player and Bobby Weed, that leads the way for mainland golf. Additionally, the private communities of the Hilton Head and Bluffton areas are among the finest in the Southeast. On the island, Long Cove Club and its Dye-designed course is nationally-ranked private facility. Off island, Belfair is a renowned community featuring 36 holes of Tom Fazio-designed championship golf. Whether it’s a first experience, a renewal of acquaintances or a lifestyle change, Hilton Head Island awaits for those seeking new adventures on and off the golf course.

Our Pete Dye Golf Course, ranked in the Top 100 for nearly three decades, sets the tone for the community as it graciously sweeps the salt marsh, lagoons, pine and live oak forests that surround it. But Long Cove Club is so much more than a private community offering a golf experience unlike any other. From the first class tennis facility to the breathtaking marina, members here enjoy all the activity they could hope for or all the solitude they could want. To discover the good life at Long Cove Club, please contact Parker Harrington, Membership Director at 1-855-Find LCC or parker@longcoveclub.org
