I

n my 15 years leading this trusted publication there has never been such upheaval in the world of professional and recreational golf. Here in the Northeast Florida, the season started with an apologetic Tiger Woods trying to save face in our own backyard. A lingering economic dark cloud has forced public and private clubs to come up with new solutions, and many of these solutions have benefitted you. After an extremely hot summer, the weather is wonderful and we’re looking forward to a tremendous season leading up to the Florida Swing. Our respected and well-conditioned courses are offering great values. As the only comprehensive golf magazine in the region, we’ve become an indispensible source for visitors and residents looking for the “must play” layouts. In this edition you’ll find every course worth your hard earned dollars. Our cover features Hampton Golf, one of the leading entities in the golf industry today. Hampton has five great courses in our area, and a dozen more scattered throughout the Southeast. Personally, I can’t wait for Players Championship week. In a welcome change, the World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony has moved to May and will serve as the kickoff to the PGA Tour’s richest tournament. I urge you to visit the World Golf Village and the Hall of Fame before and after the ceremony. This place is really a once in a lifetime experience for fans of the game’s history. Golfers of the past are brought to life here. For the latest news and information on everything golf in Northeast Florida please visit Jacksonville.golfersguide.com. And as always good luck and play well. This season promises to be one of the most rewarding in recent memory. Darren Doerr Regional Publisher 4

Hampton Golf As Great as the Game Itself… South Hampton ampton Golf has been diligently working to give its members and guests a golf experience that’s “As Great as the Game Itself” for over a decade. The all-around golf course marketing and management outfit has expanded its stable of courses from one in 1999 to 22 currently on the strength of focus and attention to detail. Headquartered in Jacksonville, Hampton Golf courses can be found throughout Florida. Recent additions make the first-rate Hampton Golf Experience available in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. For golfers who visit a Hampton facility, this translates into customer service and conditioning that is second to none. The group’s mission statement reads, “We pride ourselves on maintaining the tradition of golf by bringing you the highest standards of excellence in design, service and course conditions at each of our facilities.” The Golf Club at South Hampton became the first course to join the Hampton Golf family in 1999. The Club is semi-private and features a layout designed by North Florida native and former PLAYERS champion Mark McCumber. Located just northwest of historic Saint Augustine, this open user-friendly track provides excellent playing conditions, plenty of risk-reward opportuni-

ties and features 16 large lakes and more than 60 well-contoured bunkers. The course has always enjoyed a tremendous reputation in the First Coast of Golf. South Hampton’s trademark is the use of naturally occurring slopes and contours in the routing – a quality that’s become synonymous with McCumberdesigned courses. In Fernandina Beach you’ll find a course fit for and built by a King. The Golf Club at North Hampton is an Arnold Palmer Signature Design and has been ranked as a top 10 course in the state of Florida by Golfweek and the readers of Golflink.com. This links-style course opened for business in 2001 and is known as a challenging test of shot-making ability and short game skill. Masterful routing and unbelievable conditioning have made this Northeast Florida stalwart an unquestionable “must play” and one of the most esteemed tracks in the Hampton Golf collection. Venerable Selva Marina Country Club has a rich tradition and a bright future. The private, member-owned club was once home to the Greater Jacksonville Open – a precursor to the Players Championship. In 1966, Jack Nicklaus recorded his first-ever double eagle during the event on the 18th hole. Located in beautiful Atlantic Beach, Selva Marina is just blocks from the water. Ocean breezes can be

felt on the club’s open fairways. The country club is also home to a world-class tennis program, excellent restaurants and a junior Olympic pool. Hampton Golf’s trusted reputation earned the group the right to reenergize and reintroduce the wellrespected club. The group took over Sept. 1, 2010. “We will begin making improvements at Selva Marina immediately to ensure it is a modern club with the finest amenities and facilities while maintaining its tradition and upstanding reputation as one of the city’s premier country clubs,” said MG Orender, president and CEO of Hampton Golf and former president of the PGA of America. Located in Palm Coast, Florida, The Grand Club features some of the finest golfing opportunities available in Northeast Florida. The 54 holes of championship golf (open to the public) on property have been created by two of the game’s greatest designers and players - Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. The Grand Club earns its name with its three unforgettable courses, Pine Course, Cypress Course, and Matanzas Course, each one providing a unique and challenging golf experience. Designed by award-winning architect Clyde Johnston, Eagle Harbor has been considered one of Jacksonville’s finest layouts since opening in 1993. The semi-private course was skillfully carved from a forest of 60-foot pines and provides an exciting and challenging round of golf. Always in excellent condition, the layout features multi-tiered greens, rolling fairways, and a variety of sand and grass bunkers. The complete roster of Hampton Golf facilities can be accessed online at www.HamptonGolfClubs. com and includes some of the top-rated private and public courses in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. Golfers can gain access to Hampton’s tremendous collection of courses by enrolling in the ExecGolf program. Enrollment in Hampton Golf’s ExecGolf Membership gives golfers the opportunity to save money on the premier daily-fee courses in the area, and gain access to exclusive private clubs. An ExecGolf membership is also tied in to an exciting Tournament Series with monthly events. The season culminates with a final championship tournament at the TPC Sawgrass Players Stadium Course. Amelia National Golf & Country Club g

S

ince its opening in 2006 2006, Amelia National Golf & Country Club has enjoyed a meteoric rise in reputation among the best private clubs in North Florida. Set in beautiful Fernandina Beach near Amelia Island, Amelia National is the work of Tom Fazio, a man with more Golf Digest Top 100 courses than any other architect. Amelia National is classic Fazio; a challenge for avid players that features fine-textured TifEagle Bermuda greens and a healthy amount of water hazards to navigate. While more accomplished players will be tested by his design philosophy, the course is playable for all skill levels. “It’s special to me that we’ve received acceptance by all levels of players,” said Fazio, who prepared 19 different routings at Amelia National before settling on the finished product. “I’m con-

It’s Fazio’s signature big bunkers, expansive landing areas and gargantuan greens that give each round a variety that will present members and their guests with new and different challenges every time out. rafting the perfect combination of conditioning, challenge, beauty and value, Eagle Landing Golf Club has quickly distinguished itself as one of North Florida’s most popular and sought after semi-private golf courses. Designed by renowned architect Clyde Johnston, Eagle Landing takes golfers on a visual parade through natural wetlands, conservation areas and along the border of the 24,000-acre Jennings State Forest, all the while providing a stern yet fair test 16

of golf that features a variety of holes unlike any other in the area. The course, which sits in the heart of beautiful northern Clay County, stretches to a daunting 7,037 yards, but with the six tees put in by Johnston, is playable for players of all skill levels. Do not, however, confuse playable with easy, as this course is a fun challenge from any tee, no matter how close or far. Incorporating classic design elements, Johnston crafted an open links course that is wide open to the Coastal Florida

Panther Creek Golf Club

G

o west to track kd down the h course many are saying is the most outstanding public course in North Florida, Panther Creek. Carved into a 600-acre forest just nine miles west of downtown Jacksonville off I-10 and Chaffee Rd., this Andy Dye (Pete’s nephew) design continues to receive rave reviews. Come explore this quiet creation where you’ll discover homes on only three of the 18 holes and find that it’s you, the ball and a spectacular golf course – the way golf was meant to be played. Panther Creek Golf Club gives golfers a true Dye design experience with many deceiving looks and tie-wall borders between fairway and wetlands. Panther Creek gives you a Carolinas links-style feel after more than five million cubic yards of dirt were 18

moved changes, undulad to create elevation l h d l tions and berms that have been planted with native natural ornamental grasses. A 4,000-square-foot gatehouse with functional dining, outing, and meeting facilities serves the golfers who try to tame the Panther. The smartest decision you can make at Panther Creek is to check your ego in the golf shop and pick tees you’re truly comfortable playing. Recommendations are marked on the scorecard with only those low single-digit handicappers suggested for the two back tees that play more than 7,000 yards with ratings and slopes over 75/140. You will have a great experience when you choose tees that fit your game. The par 3s are truly enjoyable at Panther Creek, the par 5s are stout challenges,

and there is a fabulous diversity in the par 4s at this memorable layout. On the front nine you have a strategic decision to make at the par-5 “Gambler’s Alley,” and likely some long putting to do at the par-3 “Lunar Landing,” with its 10,000-square-foot green. The island green at the par-3 6th, “Mulligan Island” has 30 yards of layup room, but don’t be long or you’ll be asking for a mulligan. The par-5 “Bunker Hill” gets its name from the pair of pot bunkers in the landing area and the waste bunker that’ll snatch your approach shot. The split fairway at the 9th hole, “Top Shelf” forces a strategic decision; don’t be caught between the two. ublic golfers can discover why club members are already so comfortable here: a casually elegant clubhouse with a fully-stocked pro shop; a nicely appointed restaurant; an outside snack bar; and a porch for relaxing. The meeting room and administration staff can provide for the business part of a rewarding day of golf at Fleming Island. The large practice tee with five target greens, a sand trap and putting green create the environment for an effective pre-round warm-up and for professional golf staff instruction. Fleming Island Club’s excellent facilities are a fitting introduction to the exciting par-71 design of Bobby Weed. Five tee settings offer yardages ranging from 4,881 to 6,801. From a blank canvas of ordinary timber and wetlands, Weed sketched two nines with contrasting styles. The front nine is open, with waste areas and wetlands creating a links feeling. The back nine has been carved out of standing timberland, providing an atmosphere of solitude, all within the context of the natural terrain. FALL/WINTER 2010-11

olfers on the First Coast want to play more, not pay more. Just over the expansive waters of the St. Johns River and through the quaint downtown of Palatka, you’ll find a course that provides an authentic golf experience at a reasonable cost. Palatka Golf Club is where the past and present meet. In a natural, clutter-free atmosphere, the holes tumble gently over the sandy ridges and wrap the tranquil woods of Ravine Gardens State Park. Past winners and Tour players include Tommy Aaron, Dan Sikes, Bob Murphy, Sean Pacetti, Ryuji Imada, Philip Worthington, and Jeff Klauk. The course re-emerged to prominence earlier this year, when a team led by renowned golf designer Bobby Weed assumed management and began a long term renovation of the layout. The work will focus on rebuilding the bunkers, expanding tees and greens, and introducing sandy out-of-play areas. As Bobby himself

commented, the project will emphasize the facility’s traditional roots: “At Palatka Golf Club, we are intent on offering golf as it should be. Our focus will be on the game’s original cornerstones: good course conditions for a reasonable price, interesting holes that are fun to play, and a pleasant staff that loves golf as much as you do.” The course can be played quickly and enjoyably, offering golfers the best thrills of the game without taking up the day. After the round, relax in the full-service clubhouse with our new menu. Then, if you don’t want to tee it up for another 18, spend time rediscovering the riverfront downtown of Palatka, take a paddle along the St. Johns on Florida’s first official “blueway”, or check out a concert at the City’s “Live at the Larimer” series. Eagle Landing Golf Academy Goes High-Tech “We can use the finest computer software to get swings back on track.”

enowned golf instructors the world over, including Hank Haney who recently ended his six-year student-teacher relationship with Tiger Woods, are in agreement that state-of-the-art video technology has revolutionized revolutionize the way golf professionals teach the swing to their pupils. “The thing iis, the video equipment has become so much better that teachers in ggeneral have a much clearer idea of what wh the golf swing should be and w what the golf swing looks like to cause caus certain ball flights,” Haney said in a rrecent interview with Golfer’s Guide. At Eagle Landing Golf Club, a links-style Lan Clyde Johnston d design located in Orange Park, Director of Golf T Tim Spangler is using an exciting new video system to take his students to the next level. For years instructors have been using video to analyze the swing, but once the flaws have been identified the real work begins. A variety of techniques and teaching methods are then used to make the transition toward the ideal swing for the golfer in question. What exactly that “most effective” swing should look like is really anyone’s guess. The Swing Model system used by Spangler at Eagle Landing uses computer technology to catalog the swings of more than 140 Tour professionals and subsequently use that library of swing research create a model that every golfer can mimic in an effort to improve his or her own swing. This computerized “morph” creates a perfect swing by matching the exact body dimensions of the student. “Swing Model resembles Jim McLean’s teaching philosophy which closely resembles the philosophy I believe in and teach,” Spangler said. “Swing Model will help the student spend less time worrying about fundamentals and more time focusing on scoring. After all, scoring in golf FALL/WINTER 2010-11

is really what we are trying to achieve.” Once the student’s swing is computerized and a “perfect swing” morph is created the student, with Spangler’s help, will begin the process of making the necessary adjustments in order to catch up to the Swing Model. Through layering from take away to follow through, a student will instantly have a visual of how his/her swing compares to the perfect golf swing. The Eagle Landing Golf Academy, much like the Swing Model system, is a relatively new venture. Spangler is confident that the state-ofthe-art technology being employed at his golf club will help all levels of golfers achieve peak performance. “Our academy is basically a place where beginner golfers learn how to play and advanced golfers can take their game to next level. We can use the finest computer software to get swings on track. We also offer just the basic clinics and academies.” Look for more programs like golf schools to be added to the Eagle Landing Golf Academy curriculum in the coming weeks and months. If you’d like to receive more information, or set up a personal lesson, contact Tim Spangler at tspangler@eaglelandingfl.com. To learn more about the Swing Model system, visit www.swingmodel.com.

Northeast Florida is an exciting and enjoyable place to live…and play! We’re known as the “First Coast: because this is the first Florida area settled by Europeans, and the first area reached driving south. We believe there is much more to that designated “First”. The NFL Jacksonville Jaguars, AA Baseball Jacksonville Suns, Women’s Professional Tennis – MPS Group Championship, World Golf Hall of Fame – Induction Ceremony, PGA Tour’s THE PLAYERS Championship, PGA Nationwide Tour’s Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open, Golf Channel Amateur Tour - National Championship – are all top-level spectator sports events which attract people and increase

recognition of Northeast Florida. Then add the broad range of participation sports and activities available here including: wide sandy beaches and firstclass ocean and inland fishing from Amelia to Palm Coast, boating, parks, museums and tour-caliber golf courses. Of all the activities available, golf has become a prime recreation for residents and visitors. The sheer number of courses, designed by the likes of Tom Fazio, Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Donald Ross, Arthur Hills, Gary Player and Mark McCumber have earned Northeast Florida a major standing in the sport.

No doubt the attention paid to Northeast Florida by these architectural luminaries was a factor in the decision to establish the PGA TOUR Headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach. With momentum gathering speed like a downhill putt, the TPC Sawgrass – THE PLAYERS Stadium Course was then built to host THE PLAYERS Championship. And now, world recognition of Northeast Florida has come with the World Golf Village and World Golf Hall of Fame located between Jacksonville and St. Augustine on I-95. From designated title “First Coast”, to the earned title “First Coast of Golf”, is a reality. The proliferation of top quality golf courses and choices in accommodations has created a need for the golf packaging services offered by FLORIDA’S FIRST COAST OF GOLF: Our team of experts will help you put together the type of package that matches the wants and needs of your golfing friends, your organization or company, or you and your family. Special packages appear weekly on our website at www.florida-golf.org. Or call us at 1-888-896-9046 to learn how we can help you make the most of your visit. Remember, Northeast Florida has earned the title, “Florida’s First Coast of Golf”, and the company “where golf is first” can best take care of your wants. “Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory” and it takes you behind the scenes with a new 170-stop audio tour. With so much to see and hear, one visit may not be enough. But don’t take our word for it... if you

love the game - isn’t it time for you to go?

Golf News There are over 28,000 men and women who proudly call themselves PGA professionals in the United States. You may think of your local golf pro as the person who greets you in the pro shop or the instructor on the lesson tee, but their roles are much broader and more meaningful than meets the eye. Headquartered in Jacksonville, the Northern Chapter of the North Florida PGA encompasses a sizeable amount of acreage from Amelia Island westward to Tallahassee and further south to St. Augustine. Not only are its members well-trained golf professionals, they’re philanthropists, community organizers and stewards of the game they dedicate the large majority of their adult lives to. In addition to their day jobs tending to their respective clubs and customers, the chapter’s 270 professionals devoted their time to a number of causes, charitable events and competitive tournaments near and dear to Northeast Florida in 2010. The chapter organizes dozens of golf tournaments at clubs throughout the area each calendar year, including a ProAm series where 1500 participants compete in 13 events. Off the course, chapter pursuits and initiatives included constructing a house through the Habitat for Humanity organization, raising in excess of $15,000 62

for the Folds of Honor Foundation via Patriot Golf Day, donating shirts to the Salvation Army and brightening the day of sick children in the hospital – a program called “Putting for Smiles.” Professionals also help to grow the game by teaching junior golfers basic fundamentals, and serve as liaisons between the golf and business communities. The commitment to giving back in every way possible is encouraged and facilitated by contributions from area businesses and the general public. Allow us to introduce some of the organization’s leaders who’ve played an integral role in shaping the chapter’s vision and message through the years. Eighteenyear PGA professional Mike Lynch is the current president of the Northern Chapter, NFPGA. A savvy marketing veteran, Lynch has helped the chapter spread Mike Lynch its positive message and provided strong internal leadership. In his day job as the North Florida/South Georgia market sales manager for Golf Channel Solutions, Lynch helps golf facilities promote their tee times to an audience of more than 1.5 million golfers. “I couldn’t see myself doing anything

else,” he said. “I love the game. My kids love the game. I still teach a lot of lessons with the McCumber Golf Academy and there is nothing more satisfying and fun than seeing someone’s face light up after they hit a good shot or shoot a good score after taking a lesson from me.” PGA Professional at Amelia National Golf and Country Club since March 2008, Vice President Jack Aschenbach is a decorated veteran of our Armed Forces, having served as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy for 23 years. Upon leaving the military, AschenJack Aschenbach bach turned his attention toward a career with the PGA of America. He became a professional in 1996. “I found it safer to be shot by golf balls rather than bullets,” he said. His passion for our service men and women shone through this year, when he was named the Patriot Leader for the North Florida Section on the strength of his contributions to the annual Patriot Golf Day effort. He was also named the North Florida Section’s PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award winner in 2009. Mike Broderick, head golf professional at The Palencia Club, serves as

the Northern Chapter’s secretary. He’s worked at clubs from Palm Coast to Cape Cod and enjoys relationship building, growing the game through player development Mike Broderick and junior golf, and giving back to the community by coordinating charitable events. “I jumped to the opportunity to work with the Chapter as it’s a way to give back to the game and to create the lifelong relationships with the fellow PGA Professionals and club representatives,” he said.” Tournament Chairman Brad Rollinson has been a PGA Member since 1986. He’s served as a head professional at clubs in Ohio and Florida, and became involved with the Northern Chapter in Brad Rollinson hopes of raising the level of play and increasing event participation.

The Northern Chapter, NFPGA would like to thank all of its partners in the golf industry and local golf community – Callaway Golf, Cleveland/Srixon, Cutter & Buck, EZ-Go, Titleist, Footjoy, Puma, Page & Tuttle, Nerds on Site, Here’s Fred, Prudential Insurance, Nike Golf, Club Car, TaylorMade, Beecher Carlson, Matthew Broadus Advertising, ForeFront.
