Whether you make Jacksonville your home full-time, part-time or are just visiting our fine coast, the Jacksonville Golfer’s Guide is your resource for finding the best golf in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Both in this publication and on our website – Jacksonville.golfersguide.com – you will find information on the finest resort, public and private golf that make Florida’s First Coast what it is. Legendary designers, amazing golf courses and luxurious living abound in this region and we at Golfer’s Guide take great pleasure in
bringing those to you every day. For more than 20 years, Golfer’s Guide has had its finger on the pulse of golf in this great region. We know the best places to play, stay and join in North Florida and trust me, there are plenty of each to enjoy. On the southern end of the region there are luxurious resort areas such as Daytona Beach and Palm Coast. To the north there’s Amelia Island and the Brunswick Islands. In between, there’s the greater Jacksonville area, which takes a seat to no other region in providing memorable golf experiences for locals and visitors alike. This region boasts the PGA Tour headquarters, TPC Sawgrass and the World Golf Hall of Fame. Not bad, right? This May, the eyes of the golf world will be on Jacksonville as a legendary host of golfers are inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Headlined by PGA Tour star Ernie Els and former President George Bush, the induction ceremony is one of the most anticipated events on the calendar and this year is further enhanced by its new date that coincides with THE PLAYERS at TPC Sawgrass.

S
ince its opening in 2006 2006, Amelia National Golf & Country Club has enjoyed a meteoric rise in reputation among the best private clubs in North Florida. Set in beautiful Fernandina Beach near Amelia Island, Amelia National is the work of Tom Fazio, a man with more Golf Digest Top 100 courses than any other architect. Amelia National is classic Fazio; a challenge for avid players that features fine-textured TifEagle Bermuda greens and a healthy amount of water hazards to navigate. While more accomplished players will be tested by his design philosophy, the course is playable for all skill levels. “It’s special to me that we’ve received acceptance by all levels of players,” said Fazio, who prepared 19 different routings at Amelia National before settling on the finished product. “I’m con-

cerned about the middle to high high-handicapper, handicapper but it’s equally important that a player like Fred Funk told me that he’d been out and loved it too.” “I’m a big fan of Fazio courses,” said former PLAYERS champion and First Coast resident Fred Funk. “Amelia National has a nice mix of picturesque holes and strategic holes that flows very well.” The immaculately groomed golf course was carved through natural forests of tall pines, live oaks and sweet bays, all adding different visually dynamic elements to the course. It’s Fazio’s signature big bunkers, expansive landing areas and gargantuan greens that give each round a variety that will present members and their guests with new and different challenges every time out. The club can provide a full-service tournament experience from pairings, scoring and tee times to cart service. There is also a full-service bar and restaurant on the premises to enhance your experience. Amelia National’s 17,000-square-foot oldstyle clubhouse, originally opened in October 2007, creates a wonderful gathering place for members and their guests to relax and enjoy the incredible amenities offered by the club. There are a number of paths to membership, including a social membership with property SPRING/SUMMER 2011

ownership that can easily be upgraded to a full golf membership. There are also a number of memberships available to area residents who don’t live at Amelia National. The secluded community of Amelia National is right at the gateway to the enviable leisure attitude and amenities of Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach, the only private, gated community between Jacksonville and Sea Island, Ga. Far from the sprawl south of Jacksonville, Amelia National is only 20 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from downtown, and on average five to eight degrees cooler. ublic golfers can discover why club members are already so comfortable here: a casually elegant clubhouse with a fully-stocked pro shop; a nicely appointed restaurant; an outside snack bar; and a porch for relaxing. The meeting room and administration staff can provide for the business part of a rewarding day of golf at Fleming Island. The large practice tee with five target greens, a sand trap and putting green create the environment for an effective pre-round warm-up and for professional golf staff instruction. Fleming Island Club’s excellent facilities are a fitting introduction to the exciting par-71 design of Bobby Weed. Five tee settings offer yardages ranging from 4,881 to 6,801. From a blank canvas of ordinary timber and wetlands, Weed sketched two nines with contrasting styles. The front nine is open, with waste areas and wetlands creating a links feeling. The back nine has been carved out of standing timberland, providing an atmosphere of solitude, all within the context of the natural terrain. 30

Eagle Landing Golf Academy Goes High-Tech “We can use the finest computer software to get swings back on track.”

enowned golf instructors the world over, including Hank Haney who recently ended his six-year student-teacher relationship with Tiger Woods, are in agreement that state-of-the-art video technology has revolutionized revolutionize the way golf professionals teach the swing to their pupils. “The thing iis, the video equipment has become so much better that teachers in ggeneral have a much clearer idea of what wh the golf swing should be and w what the golf swing looks like to cause caus certain ball flights,” Haney said in a rrecent interview with Golfer’s Guide. At Eagle Landing Golf Club, a links-style Lan Clyde Johnston d design located in Orange Park, Director of Golf T Tim Spangler is using an exciting new video system to take his students to the next level. For years instructors have been using video to analyze the swing, but once the flaws have been identified the real work begins. A variety of techniques and teaching methods are then used to make the transition toward the ideal swing for the golfer in question. What exactly that “most effective” swing should look like is really anyone’s guess. The Swing Model system used by Spangler at Eagle Landing uses computer technology to catalog the swings of more than 140 Tour professionals and subsequently use that library of swing research create a model that every golfer can mimic in an effort to improve his or her own swing. This computerized “morph” creates a perfect swing by matching the exact body dimensions of the student. “Swing Model resembles Jim McLean’s teaching philosophy which closely resembles the philosophy I believe in and teach,” Spangler said. “Swing Model will help the student spend less time worrying about fundamentals and more time focusing on scoring. After all, scoring in golf SPRING/SUMMER 2011
034-035 Eagle Landing Golf Academy.indd 2
is really what we are trying to achieve.” Once the student’s swing is computerized and a “perfect swing” morph is created the student, with Spangler’s help, will begin the process of making the necessary adjustments in order to catch up to the Swing Model. Through layering from take away to follow through, a student will instantly have a visual of how his/her swing compares to the perfect golf swing. The Eagle Landing Golf Academy, much like the Swing Model system, is a relatively new venture. Spangler is confident that the state-ofthe-art technology being employed at his golf club will help all levels of golfers achieve peak performance. “Our academy is basically a place where beginner golfers learn how to play and advanced golfers can take their game to next level. We can use the finest computer software to get swings on track. We also offer just the basic clinics and academies.” Look for more programs like golf schools to be added to the Eagle Landing Golf Academy curriculum in the coming weeks and months. If you’d like to receive more information, or set up a personal lesson, contact Tim Spangler at tspangler@eaglelandingfl.com. To learn more about the Swing Model system, visit www.swingmodel.com.

The course re-emerged to prominence earlier this year, when a team led by renowned golf designer Bobby Weed assumed management and began a long term renovation of the layout. St. Johns Golf Club
L
ocated just a half-mile off I-95 outside St. Augustine, St. Johns Golf Club is a cut above the traditional county-operated golf course. Beginning with its scenic Robert Walker layout that enhances and flows with the surrounding natural landscape, St. Johns is atypical of many First Coast golf operations. The front nine weaves its way through a series of wetlands, pine groves and waterways. Both the third and eighth hole best represent the challenge of this layout. The 3rd hole is a dogleg left over a pond requiring an accurate tee shot followed by a quality approach as the green has water both to its left and behind it. On the par 3 8th hole, tee shots must be solidly struck as the green is bulk headed almost completely around, with bunkers front and back, testing a players 38
038-039 St. Johns GC.indd 1
commitment and resolve. Water hazards are even more prevalent on the back nine with water on all but one hole. Despite this, most of the water runs on either side of the holes with only one true forced carry required. The par 5 7th hole is reachable in two shots if a player is willing to cut off distance by challenging the water off the tee. Approach shots are uphill to a multi-tiered green testing a player’s distance control whether it is their 2nd or 3rd shot. The finishing hole is 430 yards long and requires a tee shot to split a fairway bounded by wetlands and pine groves. With a drivable par 4 over water as well, the back nine has the potential to be a career low or an extremely frustrating nine holes. Many a good player has shot a 32 one day and a 42 the next while trying to navigate the risk/reward options.

Laurel Island Links
P
GA Champion Davis Love III made Laurel Island Links, located just six miles north of the Georgia border off I-95, the second course in his design portfolio when it opened in 1996. The Love trademark of creating a course that quietly interacts with nature is evident throughout the course’s entire 125-acre setting. Love’s design takes full advantage of the diverse terrain—heavy woodlands, stretches of salt marsh, and natural wetlands. Most fairways at Laurel Island Links are wide and flowing, exemplified by the first hole, a 386-yard par-4. The banks of the Crooked River marshes provide a stunning backdrop beginning at the second hole. A lone windswept tree punctuates the horizon, and one can easily imagine a similar scene at the edge of the African Serengeti. Players skim the marsh48

es at the third and sixth holes as well, with a serpentine-shaped lake thrown in to make the par-3 third the course’s signature hole. The par-5 fourth and par-4 fifth holes are tantalizingly short, teasing you to reach them for an eagle putt. The sixth also beckons with cunning water that reminds one of a comedian’s observation: “The reason the pro tells you to keep your head down is so you won’t see him laughing at you.” Indeed, overhead bird caws closely resemble the taunting laughter that reminds us how humbling this game can be. Play at Laurel Island Links is both exhilarating and inspiring. As is tradition at great courses, it starts easy and finishes hard with deviations in difficulty wellspaced to keep interest up and frustration to a minimum for its growing member-

ship and visitors alike. The finishing hole might be the one that takes your breath away. Trees on one side and water on the other as you thread your way down the longest par-4 on the course, climaxing with a challenging, contoured green well-protected by water and sand. This is the hole that makes recreational players a tad nervous, but even experienced players enjoy the thrill of victory when they play it well. Laurel Island Links is a trophy course for Davis Love III. It is picturesque beyond mere words—the danger being the visual distraction one might experience playing on a picture postcard golf course. Several times throughout the course, quaint wooden bridges take players under ancient live oak canopies and through verdant pine forest stands. It is a bit of SPRING/SUMMER 2011

a fairy tale setting for a game that often escapes the coveted “happily ever after” ending. No one has ever described the sport of golf as “soothing.” But, perhaps, when on safari at Laurel Island Links, the excitement of the hunt is balanced by its nearly surreal, serene setting. The clubhouse features a full restaurant and catering for events and outings of up to 175 and a back porch with stunning views of the course and the undulating practice green of this semi-private masterpiece that’s just a half-hour’s drive from Jacksonville or Brunswick. Who knows, you might be tempted to stay for a lifetime in one of the Communities of Laurel Island Plantation. Northeast Florida is an exciting and enjoyable place to live…and play! We’re known as the “First Coast: because this is the first Florida area settled by Europeans, and the first area reached driving south. We believe there is much more to that designated “First”. The NFL Jacksonville Jaguars, AA Baseball Jacksonville Suns, Women’s Professional Tennis – MPS Group Championship, World Golf Hall of Fame – Induction Ceremony, PGA Tour’s THE PLAYERS Championship, PGA Nationwide Tour’s Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open, Golf Channel Amateur Tour - National Championship – are all top-level spectator sports events which attract people and increase

recognition of Northeast Florida. Then add the broad range of participation sports and activities available here including: wide sandy beaches and firstclass ocean and inland fishing from Amelia to Palm Coast, boating, parks, museums and tour-caliber golf courses. Of all the activities available, golf has become a prime recreation for residents and visitors. The sheer number of courses, designed by the likes of Tom Fazio, Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Donald Ross, Arthur Hills, Gary Player and Mark McCumber have earned Northeast Florida a major standing in the sport.

No doubt the attention paid to Northeast Florida by these architectural luminaries was a factor in the decision to establish the PGA TOUR Headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach. With momentum gathering speed like a downhill putt, the TPC Sawgrass – THE PLAYERS Stadium Course was then built to host THE PLAYERS Championship. And now, world recognition of Northeast Florida has come with the World Golf Village and World Golf Hall of Fame located between Jacksonville and St. Augustine on I-95. From designated title “First Coast”, to the earned title “First Coast of Golf”, is a reality. The proliferation of top quality golf courses and choices in accommodations has created a need for the golf packaging services offered by FLORIDA’S FIRST COAST OF GOLF: Our team of experts will help you put together the type of package that matches the wants and needs of your golfing friends, your organization or company, or you and your family. Special packages appear weekly on our website at www.florida-golf.org. Or call us at 1-888-896-9046 to learn how we can help you make the most of your visit. There’s Still Hope!
By popular demand, “Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory” has been extended through mid-2011. The exhibit features vintage photography and rare video, alongside 400 artifacts (the largest collection of Hope memorabilia ever placed on public display) that represent Hope’s broad range of talents — from vaudeville to entertaining
troops — and naturally, his passion for the game of golf. Guests first view a presentation narrated by fellow Hall of Fame member and good friend, Arnold Palmer which includes some of Hope’s bestknown golf stand up and skits. From there, the exhibition winds guests through displays featuring different eras and locations significant to his life, including Cleveland, New York, Hollywood, Palm Springs, Washington, D.C. and sites of USO shows around the world. Throughout “Shanks,” guests can see how golf was interwoven throughout every facet of Hope's life—both personal and professional.

Golf News There are over 27,000 men and women who proudly call themselves PGA professionals in the United States. You may think of your local golf pro as the person who greets you in the pro shop or the instructor on the lesson tee, but their roles are much broader and more meaningful than meets the eye. Headquartered in Jacksonville, the Northern Chapter of the North Florida PGA encompasses a sizeable amount of acreage from Amelia Island westward to Tallahassee and further south to St. Augustine. Not only are its members well-trained golf professionals, they’re philanthropists, community organizers and stewards of the game they dedicate the large majority of their adult lives to. In addition to their day jobs tending to their respective clubs and customers, the chapter’s 270 professionals devoted their time to a number of causes, charitable events and competitive tournaments near
and dear to Northeast Florida in 2010. The chapter organizes dozens of golf tournaments at clubs throughout the area each calendar year, including a Pro-Am series where 1500 participants compete in 13 events. Off the course, chapter pursuits and initiatives included constructing a house through the Habitat for Humanity organization, raising in excess of $30,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation via Patriot Golf Day, donating shirts to the Salvation Army and brightening the day of sick children in the hospital – a program called “Putting for Smiles.” Professionals also help to grow the game by teaching junior golfers basic fundamentals, and serve as liaisons between the golf and business communities. The commitment to giving back in every way possible is encouraged and facilitated by contributions from area businesses and the general public.
■ Freedom Friday
together to promote “Freedom Friday” by playing in the inaugural club social scramble. Members and Guests were divided into two teams of 15 with 30 players, and the game was on. Four hours later we were done with the nine hole event and fun was had by all as we celebrated with high fives and group cheers to spur on the competition. The winners of this event are our Men and Women in uniform as we the Members of Amelia National Golf and Country Club will not forget the sacrifices they have made.
Freedom Friday is a Northern Chapter, North Florida PGA initiative to remind our fellow golfers and friends to remember our Men and Women in Unformed, (past and present) and currently serving our country by wearing a RED SHIRT on each and every Friday. By doing so, you will be a supporter of sending the message to~ remember and support our troops. On Sunday, January 31, 2011 Amelia National Members and Friends came 72

Making a Difference One of the many Northern Chapter, PGA community involvements includes a top priority in supporting the Men and Women in Uniform. Over the past two years the Golf Professionals of the Northern Chapter, PGA have recognized our military by hosting complimentary golf invitations such as this past years Armed Forces Appreciation month were many active and retired military were invited to area golf clubs to enjoy a day of golf on some the best courses in North Florida. Another Chapter success story has been the Chapter’s involvement in raising more than $30,000 in support of Patriot Golf Day and the Folds of Honors Foundation helping those left behind. The Northern Chapter is steadfast on this priority and will continue to be a force behind this drive. Along with these efforts the Northern Chapter continues to do more and has taken on another initiative to spread the word to Remember the Troops. In our day to day lives through the hustle and bustle it’s easy to forget about those who are making the greatest sacrifice by being on the front line and protecting our interests. A way to make us remember is through a symbolic reminder. It’s simple, on each and every Friday the Northern Chapter PGA Professionals are asking you to wear a RED Shirt to the golf course or to work spreading the reminder to not forget FALL/WINTER 2010-11

about our troops. The initiative is called “FREEDOM FRIDAY” The Executive Board of the Northern Chapter, PGA invites you to join us in this effort. Freedom Friday shirts may be purchased in most golf pro-shops or you may send a order request to Jack Aschenbach, Vice president, Northern Chapter at jackaschenbach@pga.com A portion of each shirt sold will go towards the Folds of Honors Foundation.
