Singing the Grand Strand’s Praises
By Chris King
Dustin Johnson Named Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday Spokesman PGA TOUR star Dustin Johnson has lived the Myrtle Beach golf experience and loved it. Now he is going to tell the world about the virtues of a Grand Strand golf trip. Johnson will appear in various marketing materials, including print and radio ads, social media efforts and a 30-second television commercial showcasing his talents and affinity for the Myrtle Beach area. “I’m obviously very excited,” Johnson said. “This is the first time I’ve done anything like this. [Myrtle Beach] is a place I’ve grown to love.” A four-time winner on the PGA TOUR and the 5th ranked player in the world, Johnson owns a home in Myrtle Beach and is very involved in the community through his foundation. He is a graduate of Coastal Carolina University and sponsors Coastal Carolina University’s collegiate golf tournament, General Hackler Championship, each spring as well. Johnson, the first player since Tiger Woods to win in each of his first four years on the PGA TOUR, has emerged as one of the game’s most recognizable and popular players. He won twice in 2010 and made the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Even before becoming Golf Holiday’s official spokesperson, Johnson was an unofficial ambassador for the community. A Tournament Players Club of Myrtle Beach club logo has adorned his bag since he turned professional and he has never hidden his affinity for the area. FALL/WINTER 2011-12

“It’s where I grew as a golfer and as a person so it’s very special to me,” he said. Now in his fourth year on the PGA Tour, Johnson has played some of the best courses in the world, and the layouts in Myrtle Beach are as good as any. Heading into the Tour Championship, Dustin ranked second in FEDEX points with the elusive $10 million payday just within “grabbing” distance. Already a fourtime winner on TOUR coming into the 2011 season, he successfully gained rights to the “winners” glass trophy at the 2012 Barclays Championship. With top-10 finishes at five other events, including a tie for second at the British Open. Johnson said “I was never concerned.” Johnson said he’s been working hard to improve his putting but had not seen any payoff before The Barclays. His main focus has been to simply get his putts properly started on the right line. “You can’t control if the ball goes in,” he said, “but you can control where you start it. I’ve just been working on starting it where I’m looking.” “We are thrilled to partner with Dustin to promote the Myrtle Beach area as America’s number one golf destination,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “We are excited to be associated with one of the best golfers in the world, and a guy that knows and loves Myrtle Beach.”

his Tom Jackson Signature design is a classic parkland course completely engulfed by nature without the confinement of homes lining each hole. You’ll use every club in your bag, and the wide fairways instill confidence for the meek and forgiveness for the bold. “The Beast,” having recently sharpened its claws, may look intimidating with its 23 finger lakes, but the wide fairways and smooth Champion greens make it golf as it was meant to be... peaceful, beautiful and playable. Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year
Myrtle Beach’s newest golf course wasted little time rising to the top of the leaderboard. Founders Club, a South Strand gem, has earned 2011 Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year honors. “To be selected the best among the abundance of golf courses in the Myrtle 10

Beach area is a tremendous honor,” said Tommy Smothers, general manager of Classic Golf Group. “Founders Club has only been around for three years and it is always in impeccable condition, so this award is a testament to all of the hard work the staff there has done to earn this award.” A Thomas Walker design, the beauty of Founders Club resides in the land’s uncommon elevation change and abundant, native sand. Located on what used to be Sea

Gull Golf Club, Walker bulldozed the old course – completely – and crafted a design that allows it to take a seat comfortably alongside its Pawleys Island neighbors. From a visual perspective, Founders Club, which opened on Feb. 1, 2008, is defined by the waste bunkers that run alongside side practically every fairway, providing visual contrast when set against the lush, green fairways. But the waste bunkers provide more than aesthetics. The bunkers also double as cart FALL/WINTER 2011-12

paths, meaning the only pavement on the course is around the greens and tee boxes. More importantly to golfers, the sand, combined with elevated fairways and outstanding drainage, means carts ride on the fairways 365 days a year. The Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owner’s Association evaluates Golf Course of the Year nominees on four criteria: exceptional quality of the golf course, exceptional quality of the ownership and management, outstanding contribution to the community, and significant contribution to the game. By virtue of winning the Myrtle Beach Course of the Year award, Founders club becomes a candidate for state honors. A Classic Golf Group course, Founders Club is a sponsor of the Grand Strand Adopt-A-Highway program and the Ocean Highway Beautification Project. The course’s 18th hole is visible from Highway 17 South and stretches 7,007 yards from the championship tees. The course hosts numerous charity events throughout the year and regularly donates complimentary vouchers for rounds to other charity golf events throughout the Myrtle Beach area. Other Classic Golf Group courses to capture this honor are: 2004 winner Indian Wells and 2006 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year, Burning Ridge.

ou many think all Myrtle Beach courses are alike, until you experience the power of The Wizard. Mountains have magically sprung up at the site of The Wizard, giving you the perfect elevation challenge in the most unlikely of places! More than one million cubic yards of earth were moved to create this stunning layout, offering unexpected elevation changes stunning water holes and gorgeous bentgrass greens. Mesmerizing, magical, and mystical thrills await you, with the biggest surprise at the finish line. The Wizard is ranked the most difficult of the Mystical Golf Trio of courses. The course is, however, the most player-friendly and doesn’t taunt you with extremely unrealistic lengths but instead flaunts wide fairways and large greens. The greatest thing about The Wizard is that even though you’ll find you’re bombarded with mental game challenges and tests of physical skills, the fun you’ll experience here will create a lasting memory. Wizard possesses a distinct Old World influence with rolling hillsides covered in love-grass, stone bridges and a clubhouse that resembles a medieval castle. No Myrtle Beach golf vacation is complete without a session with The Wizard.

key measurement of a course’s appeal is how many people want to play it again. One of the top repeat-play courses in Myrtle Beach for nearly two generations, Palmetto’s traditional design offers accommodating Bermuda fairways that slope gently through old-growth pines toward large, subtly undulating Tifdwarf Bermuda greens. Stretching out along the Intracoastal Waterway, the course serves up a variety of hazards and bunkers to test your shot-making abilities. mmediately after it opened, Meadowlands received honors as one of the “Top 10 Best New Courses” from North Carolina Magazine. Since, it has earned a place on the prestigious Golf for Women list of “Top 100 Women-Friendly Courses,” thanks to five sets of tees, an open layout, well-defined hazards, superb conditioning of the TifDwarf Bermuda greens and an attention to detail creating a rewarding experience for everyone. onsidering the extraordinary golf experience Farmstead offers, this is arguably the best deal in the area. In a natural, windswept, 480-acre setting comfortably removed from developed areas, the course affords golfers the luxury of playing in almost perfect privacy. Willard Byrd designed linksstyle fairways that gently follow the lay of the land to create a collection of shotmaking opportunities. But perhaps the most indelible impression comes from the famous 18th, the Grand Strand’s only par 6, where you tee off in SC but putt out in NC. 22

ince 1927, Pine Lakes Country Club has been a favorite of Grand Strand golfers. Nestled in the heart of Myrtle Beach, the graceful Southern architecture of the clubhouse symbolizes the deeply rooted history and tradition of the Myrtle Beach area. After an extensive renovation to the course and clubhouse, you will be able to experience the Granddaddy as it was in the spirit of the 1920s. The front nine will reflect White’s original design and the back nine will also be renovated to enhance the elegant experience golfers from around the world associate with Pine Lakes Country Club.

rom your first drive over the picturesque bridge, everything about Grande Dunes bespeaks luxury. The Resort Course is, in a word, stunning. From the multi-million dollar Tuscan-style homes that line many of the holes to the immaculately-manicured landscaping, it provides an ambiance for golfers of all skill levels. But what really sets the Resort Course apart from other public courses is its “private club” atmosphere with an impeccably groomed golf course, a variety of driving situations and angles of approach, nestled among old water oaks, tall pines and rolling landscape. 2009 NGCOA Golf Course of the Year.

Rivers Edge
Golf Club and Plantation
A true Grand Strand beauty. Rivers Edge has been described as one of the most scenic courses along the Grand Strand. The natural beauty of this Arnold Palmer design is a favorite among Myrtle Beach golfers and the game’s elite. Located between Myrtle Beach and Wilimington, Rivers Edge is the perfect course to schedule the first or last round of your golf vacation, particularly for those traveling from the north to the Grand Strand. Consistently ranked among North Carolina’s best layouts, it does not take long to see why. From the fifth tee box you will be amazed by the views of the Shallotte River and surrounding marshland. This type of layout does not come without its challenges. Water from the salty river has been known to affect the irrigation, making it difficult to maintain the greens. Recently management moved to eliminate any inconsistency in the layout’s greens, installing Seadwarf Pasplaum grass. Paspalum has a high tolerance for sodium, making it ideal for a layout drawing water from the saltmarsh. With any of the local courses developed along the wetlands, it is always a good idea to bring along a few extra balls, as the 50

marsh known tto claim its ffair Golfh iis k l i it i share. h G lf ers should not allow this to be too intimidating, the fairways are fairly generous, just be mindful of the rough. The rough often comes in the form of sawgrass . For those that do not boast of a strong drive, Rivers Edge is perfect for players not looking to overextend themselves. With smaller greens, an accurate approach is a must. Once on the dance floor, extreme undulations are not a concern but with subtle breaks, speed can be a huge factor. Offering an excellent practice facility and a clubhouse that overlooks the 9th and 18th greens, it is an ideal setting for lunch or post round snack.

attention, quality instruction, and a time honored curriculum are things that have made this school a success. They will not rebuild or tear down swings but reprogram through proper information. They believe in evaluating every student’s body type, personality, skill level, and golf goals. Richard is the Asst. GM and Head Golf Professional at Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club. The MBGCOA is a local organization of golf course owners who meet to promote the game, and to represent the collective interests of the local industry to municipal, state and national leadership groups. They recognize one area employee each year based on outstanding service to the game of golf and to his company, the quality of his work, and contribution to the community. Richard has been a outstanding employee, a great golf professional and a true promoter of golf in the Myrtle Beach market for the past twelve years. As the Head Professional at Sandpiper, Richard works tirelessly to organize and manage the 27 hole operaFALL/WINTER 2011-12

tion that has over 400 Members, hosts over 55,000 rounds of golf per year. Richard has a great eye for detail, and runs over 40 tournaments and special events each year, giving each event the care and attention of a “major” championship. Richard’s strength is in his passion for the game, and his sincere interest in helping others. He cares about the game, and for his employees and for the guests that visit his operation. In the past several years, Richard guided the renovation projects at Sandpiper Bay that converted all 27 greens to MiniVerde Bermuda grass and led the company to upgrade the practice areas, clubhouse and restaurant areas. He also managed a logo change and a re-branding of the facility – all these efforts led to Sandpiper Bay being named the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course of the Year for 2010. Another of his passions involve Junior Golf. This year, thru his connections with salespeople and vendors, he arranged for two-time US OPEN Champion Curtis Strange to visit Sandpiper for the Club’s annual Junior Golf Day. Richard coordinated all activities for the juniors and adults that included Curtis’s Demonstration clinic, on hands instruction by local PGA Professionals for the participants that attended, and a Nike Demo Day. Richard is also highly involved with the marketing of Sandpiper Bay, and the promotion of Myrtle Beach as a golf destination. He is a member of the Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday Marketing Committee

Over 400 of the facilities in the section held eevents at their courses to raise money ffor the Folds of Honor Foundation. Patriot G Golf lf Day was started d five years ago by Major Dan Rooney, PGA, as the primary fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation. Over 2,000 scholarships have been awarded since the event began. When Patriot Golf day first started the intention was to have PGA Professionals add $1 to their greens fees during Labor Day weekend. Over the past few years PGA Professionals and courses have

National Father & Son Team Classic
Three Days of Golf, A Lifetime of Memories As curious little boys evolve into men n who know everything, they gleam much of their worldly knowledge from their fathers, absorbing behaviors, vocabulary, values, work ethic and a sense of who they will be – like freshly unwrapped sponges. Of course all of that information and understanding doesn’t pass from parent to child through osmosis. As is often the case, father and son will discover a shared passion or common ground ideal for cultivating the closest of bonds. Whether it’s Little League baseball, Pop Warner football or a Saturday morning soccer league, sports often serve as the vehicle for forming that special friendship. But is there any better way for a father and son to learn about life and each other than by playing a round of golf together? The most humbling and human of all sporting pursuits, golf teaches us pa82
082-083.Father and Son edit.indd 1
tience, honesty, integrity, and persistence. Throughout the course of every round, we recognize the fleeting nature of success and the constant hard work required to sustain it. We learn to brush off disappointment, while vowing to do better the next time. We learn that we’re vulnerable to mistakes and to the whims of the sometimes unexplainable world that we live in. We learn to project humility when we’re victorious and to be gracious in defeat; each one a worthwhile trait our dads try to instill in us as we come of age. Golf also gives us the chance to turn off our cell phones for the afternoon, silence our Twitter accounts and Facebook feeds and forget about everything except the next shot and present company. Isolated from the world, father and son can bond together and create lasting memories for a lifetime.

Some of the most memorable moments in the long and storied history of golf feature father and son teams. When Tiger Woods overwhelmed the field at Augusta National Golf Club, becoming the youngest Masters champion in history and setting a tournament record at 18-under-par, he met his father behind the 18th green and the two men shared a tearful embrace. Their bear hug was broadcast to a national television audience and still stands as one of the signature moments of Tiger’s career. Another man who needs no introduction, Jack Nicklaus, shared his improbable victory at the 1986 Masters with his son Jackie, who carried the bag for his dad that week at Augusta National. Nicklaus was 46 years old when he fired a 30 home to capture his sixth Green coming hom Jacket and his son was at his side to revel in the utter improbability of the moment. While these unforgettable events played out in front of millions, moments that mean just special mom as much to those involved unfold across tees, fairways and greens each and every day. Isn’t it time you had yours? “My son John and I have just attended our 10th consecutive Father-Son,” beamed Rich Hassan after competing in a recent Father & Son Classic. “John started when he was 15. This is an absolutely premier event, run very professionally and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them. It has truly been the one event that has nurtured our relationship the most, one of the goals of the tournament, so for that we are grateful.” “So another year has passed, and we have another Father Son picture to hang on the wall. Many of the story lines for the event had a familiar ring, but 75-year-old Bobby Perkinson added a touch of history to the event. A four handicap, Perkinson shot net 70 (gross 74) at TPC Myrtle Beach to win the World Championship Playoff for the second consecutive year. Perkinson is the first person in the 28-year history of the event to win the championship playoff twice. The 2011 event enjoyed spectacular weather and participants had one of the best course lineups in Golf.com World Am history. Among the 60 Myrtle Beach area courses that hosted the event were Caledonia, Kings North, Tidewater, True Blue, Leopard’s Chase and Rivers Edge. Enjoyable as things were on the 88

course, the World’s Largest 19th Hole was again the heartbeat of the event. Players gathered nightly at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center to enjoy free drinks, dinner, live entertainment and some of golf’s most prominent names. Golf Magazine columnist and CBS television analyst David Feherty headlined the 19th Hole entertainment and regaled the crowd with stories from his time on the Tour and in TV booth. Feherty was joined on the 19th Hole stage by Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer, the Voice of Golf, Peter Kessler, and short-game guru Dave Pelz, among others. The World Am features five competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 years old and under to the super seniors (70+), and is open to any player with a verifiable USGA handicap. Players with handicaps as low as three and as high as 34 have won the tournament. Next year’s World Amateur Handicap Championship will be played August 27August 31, 2012. t goes without saying that the golf industry as a whole has been treading water for quite some time, hoping to stay afloat. The supply of available golf courses has decreased ever so slightly over the years, but the demand to play golf has decreased an enormous amount in relation. So many pressures have been placed upon the consumer‌ with the decision of how much available discretionary income should be used for entertainment being a major one. One of the best ways that golf operators combat the problem of decreasing golf rounds is to offer discounts and incentives. And the creative golf operators realize that the future success of golf depends largely on our youth. With those two things in mind, the consumer can find very enticing offers from many courses around the country, especially in Myrtle Beach. Many of the Grand Strand courses allow junior golfers to play free with a paying adult. So when you are looking for some family entertainment while at the beach, instead of mini golf, take some time to play golf instead. The low cost will surprise you!

Speaking of junior golf, The First Tee is a great initiative of the World Golf Foundation that helps develop the golf skills of young people of all backgrounds. But more importantly, the organization helps youth build character, integrity, and honesty. Youth of all ages, ethnicity, and economic backgrounds are afforded the benefits of the program. The Classic Golf Group is proud to support and associate itself with such an enormous effort‌ hosting events, lessons, and clinics. If you have a child that is interested in playing golf and learning life-enhancing values, be certain to contact your local First Tee representative! Although the trend in golf in recent years has shown decreases, it is finally showing a positive return. Many individuals, couples, and families are returning to the golf course. And having a family golf vacation to Myrtle Beach is a must on the list of many. If you are one of those that want to spend a day on the links, let the knowledgeable professionals at Classic Golf Getaways plan all the cumbersome details for you.
