LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

D

oes the name Huckleberry Dillinger ring a bell? If so, then you have likely grown up watching the golfer with the freckle-face who earned the unusual moniker with surprising killer competitive instincts. The nickname may not be as memorable as the “who do you love” national advertising campaign TaylorMade launched around Valentine’s Day, but the hard-to-beat guy is surely loved and will be back in Michigan to tee it up with other endearing golf greats like Boom Boom, Gentle Ben and the Walrus. Tom Watson, a.k.a. Huckleberry Dillinger, will headline the 73rd Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores and return in July for the U.S. Senior Open at the Old Course at Indianwood Golf and Country Club. Michigan will be the major destination of the Champions Tour this year, and “Pure Michigan” will be flashing on the national radar and showcasing golf destinations throughout the state. Visiting golfers are sure to travel around the state to play courses like Bucks Run, the jewel of the Mount Pleasant area that is showcased on our front cover. Packages with local hotels make Bucks Run a starting point, ending point or a place to park your clubs for days! Since Harbor Shores is booked with legendary golfers from May 24-27, surrounding courses in the southwest corner like Beeches, Hawkshead, Whittaker Woods and The Lynx will definitely satisfy the palate for challenging and exciting golf. Michigan is the place to be in the summer of 2012, and that includes the golf-rich Traverse City area for the visiting golfers. Properties like LochenHeath and A-GA-Ming offer mesmerizing views of the Bay and Torch Lake that capture souls. If the U.S. Senior Open is the tournament of choice for the fan, then an A.M. tee time at Devil’s Ridge, Blackheath or Fieldstone is recommended followed by a short drive to Indianwood to watch the boys compete in the early afternoon. Register to win tickets at michigan.golfersguide.com for both the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior PGA Championship. E-mail addresses are accepted. You don’t need a nickname to be a part of it. Just a willingness to watch Huckleberry Dillinger, Boom Boom, Gentle Ben, the Walrus and many more of the game’s greatest players compete on great Michigan golf courses. That’s hard to beat. ucks Run represents some of the finest golf in Michigan in regard to design, condition, challenge, versatility and service by a staff dedicated to providing a wonderful experience. Expanding on those roles, head golf professional Jon Conklin emphasizes the jewel of the Mount Pleasant area as a place you will want to visit for more than one round of golf.

Stay! Play more. Bucks Run remains a 290-acre living testament to the rolling, dramatic land the glaciers carved so long ago, and is a neighbor to Central Michigan University and Soaring Eagle Casino. Make it a starting point, or ending point, or play for days. Bucks Run is directly affiliated with three Mount Pleasant 8

hotels and nine area golf courses in exclusive stay-and-play packages. The Comfort Inn, which includes a Bennigan’s Restaurant on site, the Mount Pleasant Inn & Suites and the completely refurbished Hampton Inn provide the lodging options. A list of the golf courses is available at www.bucksrun.com. Price quotes can also be obtained online, or by calling head professional Jon Conklin at (989) 773-6830. The options are many in the new packages, and Bucks Run is also part of the “Michigan Central Swing,” a creation of the Mount Pleasant visitors and convention bureau. It includes 12 courses and 10 lodging properties (www.micentralswing.com). In addition, Bucks Run has partnered with The Resorts of Tullymore and St. Ives in Stanwood (www.tullymoregolf.com), and

with the Doherty Hotel in Clare, which offers 15 golf courses in stay-and-play packages (www..dohertyhotel.com). “We want to represent Mount Pleasant and this part of Michigan as a great golf area,” Conklin says. “Come play Bucks Run, but stay and enjoy all Mount Pleasant has to offer.” Bucks Run enters its 12th season serving those seeking a wonderful golf experience in the heart of Michigan. “We want the golfer to enjoy each visit, and to return and always feel like they received great consistent service, and they were welcome and they had a great experience in golf, dining, in every way,” Conklin says. It starts, of course, with the course. Michigan’s Jerry Matthews, the state’s most prolific architect, considers his creation an example of his award-winning firm’s best work. The course, created on the site of a former rock quarry. It surrounds stunning Fisher Lake and incorporates the views and challenges created by two ponds and the Chippewa River. Some dramatic elevation changes and rock outcroppings add challenge and visual elegance. Four sets of tees help visitors discern the length and level of challenge to the golfer. Water is everywhere, but is a beautiful backdrop as often as it is a hazard. From the front tee positions the designer was careful not to force impossible shots, yet maintain a strong test from the back tee positions. Fairways and greens are generous in size in some spots, and yet natural to the terrain and make the set-up of the course flexible and ever-changing. The finishing holes of each nine – Nos. 9 and 18 – are memorable. The flowing dogleg holes embrace the combination of water, green expanse and design. ing more, and can get settled d things h l d on the h par-54, 18-hole island putting course. This is the rare real putting course, too, a true test of putting. Bucks Run again this year has a special $25 off rate for senior golfers (over age 60) on Mondays, even in peak season. Other specials, playing lessons, and complete equipment and golf apparel are available. “People have fun here,” Conklin says. “We care about everyone enjoying their visit, and we have the course and facilities to make that happen.” The stylish clubhouse that measures 18,000 square feet sets the tone with a professionally designed pro shop, the Quarry Grill and Banquet Hall, which seats 300 people. Jeff Sweet, the superintendent and general manager, offers an impeccable course condition. Pete Lieber is the executive chef, and the dining is part of the reason many golfers stay from sunrise to sunset. The veranda that overlooks the golf course is spectacular. Bucks Run is just 90 minutes from Grand Rapids, and 60 minutes from Lansing. It’s a must-stop, flexible in price, a true upscale public venue with a everybody-is-welcome wellcome feel. 2012 Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid – Harbor Shores Benton Harbor, MI – Golf legend Tom Watson is very familiar with Michigan golf. He spent summers as a youngster in Northern Michigan, and he will headline the 73rd Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid at Harbor Shores Golf Club in the Southwest corner of the state May 24-27. Watson played the new Harbor Shores course with the likes of designer Jack Nicklaus and fellow golf legends Arnold Palmer and Johnny Miller in the development’s grand opening “Champions for Change” charity event late in the summer of 2010. That day of strong play, his five British Open titles and a penchant for playing well when the weather turns nasty, has helped him form a game plan for defending his most recent major championship title. “I hope the wind blows about 25 miles per hour and it’s about 55 degrees, what they call Watson weather,” he said during PGA of America media day festivities to promote the event at Harbor Shores. The new public venue on the shore of Lake Michigan will host the 2012 and the 2014 Senior PGA Championships, and Watson likes the idea. “I’ve had the opportunity to play Harbor Shores Golf Club, and it’s an interesting and

024.Senior PGA edit.indd 1

fun golf course to play,” he said. “It’s difficult, and with those winds coming off the lake, if we get those Northwest winds in May, it will be one heck of a test.” Last May, Watson won his second Senior PGA title with a birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with David Eger at Valhalla Golf Club near Louisville, KY. His next major championship stop is Benton Harbor where Whirlpool Corp., the driving force behind the master-planned beach and golf development of Harbor Shores, owns the KitchenAid brand. KitchenAid is the presenting sponsor of the senior major. Michigan is the center of the Champions Tour and major golf for seniors this year. The U.S. Senior Open is being played in July at the Old Course at Indindianwood Golf & Country Club. Crowds of as many as 15,000 people each day are expected at Harbor Shores for the NBC-televised event, which is expected to have a $20 million impact on the area.Tickets are available. Visit spga2012.com or call 1-800-PGA-GOLF (742-4653) for information.

2012 U.S. Senior Open at Indianwood Golf and Country Club LAKE ORION, Mich. h. – Many of the top golfers in the historyy of the game will be out to make more history when h th the 2012 U U.S. S Senior Open is played at one of Michigan’s legendary sites for championship competition. Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion will host the July 12-15 major championship for the world’s best golfers over age 50. Six World Golf Hall of Fame members – Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Larry Nelson, Greg Norman, Nick Price and Tom Watson – are expected in a field that should also include senior stars like Fred Couples, Tom Lehman and Fred Funk, who in 2009 at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind., set the tournament scoring record of 20-under-par. Indianwood’s famous Old Course, designed by Wilfrid Reid and William Connellan and opened in 1925, has previously presented championships won by the likes of golf legends Gene Sarazen, Patty Sheehan and Betsy King. “Indianwood is thrilled to host the Senior Open,” said owner Stan Aldridge in 2007 when the United States Golf Association announced the club’s selection as host. “It’s our intent to make it one of the top Senior Opens in history.” Indianwood, which has also hosted many of Michigan’s major professional events, 2012 ISSUE 1

025.US Open edit.indd 1

is following through on the goal of Mr. Aldridge as expected. The Th previous i USGA national ti l championh i ships held at Indianwood were the 1989 U.S Women’s Open, which was won by King, and the 1994 U.S. Women’s Open, which was won by Sheehan. Both received high praise from the USGA and were well received by the golf public. When Sarazen won the prestigious 1930 Western Open hosted at Indianwood a bond with the golf legends was established, which leads us to today’s legends taking their shots at history. Tom Watson, who spent summers in Northern Michigan with his family as a young boy, said late last summer that he looked forward to visiting the state for major championship golf this year, and noted the U.S. Senior Open title is one of the few things missing from his incredible golf resume. “I’m very aware of the ones that have gotten away,” he said. Olin Browne is the defending champion of the Senior Open, which was first played in 1980. He won last year at Inverness, just south of Michigan’s border near Toledo, Ohio. The prize fund will total $2.6 million with $470,000 going to the champion. For ticket information (a sellout is expected) and volunteer information, access www.2012ussenioropen.com.

ated as one of the Top 10 courses in southeast Michigan (No. 3) by the Detroit Free Press, this par-71 layout plays to just under 7,000 yards. Tucked away in secluded South Lyon, this gorgeous course is complemented by a welcoming log cabin-style clubhouse that makes you feel like you’re in Yosemite National Park. The entire course offers bentgrass tees, greens and fairways complemented by beautiful white sand bunkers. Designed by Michigan-based architect Ray Hearn, Moose Ridge is one of the more difficult courses in the region with a slope of 138. However, the five sets of tees allows playability for all skill levels. Similar to Hearns’ other works, Moose Ridge is careful to achieve the proper balance of risk and reward while requiring careful strategy as you progress from shot to shot. ocated in the midst of a serene countryside, Otter Creek has often been ranked among the top 25 public courses in the U.S. since its inception in 1964. Renowned golf course designers Robert Trent Jones and Rees Jones created this 27-hole championship course in harmony with Southern Indiana’s gently rolling hills. Utilizing the existing contours of the land to assure each shot is a natural challenge, the Jones’ have distinguished Otter Creek as a championship golf course unique to all others.

Salute The Fort – One of Indiana’s Finest www.thefortgolfcourse.com

T

o find the best public-access example of Pete Dye’s legendary work in the Circle City, travel just a few minutes northeast of downtown Indianapolis to the Fort Golf Course in Fort Harrison State Park. The Fort showcases the best of what Indiana golf has to offer. At 7,148 yards playing to a par 72 over nearly 240 acres, this layout meanders through trees, valleys and wetlands in order to create an experience that allows the golfer to enjoy nature and the game all at once. Originally opened In 1906, and named in honor of our 23rd President, Benjamin Harrison, Fort Ben served multiple roles during major military conflicts from WW1 to Desert Storm. A few years after the post closed following the Cold War, the land was purchased in the mid 1990’s by the state of Indiana, which turned to Pete Dye to redesign the golf course. Reinvented by Dye, with help from protégé Tim Liddy, and ready to entertain golfers of all ability levels, the new Fort Golf Course opened in the fall of 2007. Since the opening The Fort has consistently ranked amongst the best courses in the state of Indiana and is currently rated the #1 public course by Golf.com. In 2011, Golfweek’s “Best Courses you can play” category ranked The Fort Golf Course 3rd in the entire state. It’s an impossible chore to select just one signature hole at The Fort. Nos. 4, 5, 6, 11 and 18 are all worthy of that distinction. Each of these Dye creations shares a few common traits: thick woodlands and elevation changes, which demands a precise tee shot. Each hole then concludes on quick greens requiring a skillful sense of finesse. The Fort has become a popular “Stay and Play”
