T

he massive massive, unchecked consumption of material goods that drove America’s post-industrial economic engine prior to the onslaught of the “Great Recession” has abated, as households and individuals are exercising more austerity when opening their wallets. Which begs the question, what should I be spending my disposable income on and will it make me happy? New research indicates that playing golf, which qualifies as a leisure activity, fond memory generator and facilitator of social bond building, is a great way to amplify personal happiness. This happiness is further exacerbated when customers feel special and are treated to a quality experience. If you’re headed to Myrtle Beach this golf season or already find yourself on her shores, the collection of golf courses owned and managed by Burroughs & Chapin are gateways to a good mood and money well spent.

The Most Esteemed Brand at the Beach The Burroughs & Chapin business empire has a diversified portfolio of interests including entertainment, retail development, property leasing, timberland, farms and many different types of real estate development. Golf is directly connected to many of those ventures and has a significant presence in the company. The nine facilities that comprise Burroughs & Chapin’s Grand Collection epitomize the style and service millions of Myrtle Beach golf vacationers have grown accustomed to over the years. All told, the impressive roster features Myrtle Beach’s first-ever golf course, a past recipient of the National Golf Course Owners Association’s National Course of the Year Award, numerous layouts perennially doted upon by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine and an interstate design with a par 6 beginning in South Carolina and ending in North Carolina.

Large and lavish, Grande Dunes Resort is one of the finest masterplanned properties on the Carolina Coast. Construction of the resort coincided with Burroughs & Chapin’s venture into the golf course management trade in 1999. Grande Dunes is home to the private Members Course, and the award-winning Resort Course, which walked away with 2009 NGCOA “National Course of the Year” distinction. The resort also boasts a world-class golf academy, the luxurious Marina Inn and an ensemble of delectable eateries. Minutes from Grande Dunes you’ll find Myrtle Beach’s Granddaddy, Pine Lakes Country Club. Originally opened in the midst of prohibition in the United States, the course was built as a complement to the Ocean Forest Hotel, often a home away from home for members of the American aristocracy like the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers.. A recent renovation returned Pine Lakess to its former glory, and signified a new era of golf on the Grand Strand. Historyy literally has a home at Pine Lakes; a garden adjacent to the stately clubhousee contains the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall off Fame. The project was a joint venture between Burroughs & Chapin and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. Another popular option is Prestwick Country Club, an upscale course designed by Pete and P.B. Dye. As the world witnessed watching the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, playing a Dye course can be a maddening experience. This demanding links-style layout has rightly earned its reputation as one of the Grand Strand’s most difficult to decode. A pair of courses on the northern tip of the Grand Strand transports the spirit of Myrtle Beach golf across the FALL/WINTER 2010-11

North Carolina border. Meadowlands Golf Club, a Willard Byrd design set in the beautiful countryside of Calabash, N.C., and its sister course, Farmstead Golf Links, home to a colossal par 6 that stretches across state lines, serve as an excellent 36-hole combination for the beginning or end of a golf road trip.

At Myrtlewood Golf Club, 36 holes are available under one roof. Nearing its 40th year of operation, the Palmetto Course has cultivated a loving relationship with the men and women who take to its links each year. This traditional design continuously ranks as one of the top replay courses in Myrtle Beach. Adjacent to Palmetto is PineHills, the only layout on the Grand Strand designed by Arthur Hills. Aesthetically pleasing and unusually hilly, the aptly named River Hills Golf & Country Club is one of the best values at the beach. River Hills was built by Tom Jackson, a well-known architect in the Southeast. The layout screams “must 8

play,” and the setting in the sleepy seaside village of Little River whispers “relax and stay a while.” Fierce competition and heavy foot traffic dictate that golf courses in Myrtle Beach hit the reset button with a renovation or remodel every so often. The final two courses we’ll mention have upgraded aalready superb products by updatiing their layouts. In anticipation of its 20th aanniversary season, prestigious T Tidewater Golf Club and Plantattion launched an ambitious series oof renovations that would improve iits tees, greens and sightlines to the A Atlantic. After being named one of tthe top courses in South Carolina b by Golf Magazine and Golfweek, it’s eevident that the extra effort paid ooff. Among the fans of Tidewater is b budding PGA Tour star and Myrtle B Beach resident Dustin Johnson, w who recently told Golf Digest that tthe course is one of a few he plays w while spending time at home. Arcadian Shores also received a touch-up courtesy of Burroughs & Chapin, which assumed management of the facility in June of 2009. The classic course, designed by Rees Jones, was ranked as one of America’s 100 Greatest Courses in the 1980s. Once upon a time, Arcadian Shores hosted famous faces such as Charlie Sifford, Sam Snead and Doug Sanders when Myrtle Beach was home to the Senior Tour Championship. The best way to book a round of golf at one of Burroughs & Chapin’s courses, or a golf vacation to Myrtle Beach is to visit www.myrtlebeachgolftrips.com. And, while the site offers all of B&C’s holdings, users can book travel and rounds of golf at other select properties not owned by the company.

“So, what’s in your bag?” There’s a lot of thought that goes into packing the perfect golf bag. It all starts with the essentials... your woods, irons, wedges, putter, balls and tees. Then things get more interesting. Is rain gear needed? Sunblock, sunglasses? Ball markers, wrenches? The list goes on and on. But the central objective for every golfer is the same: to be prepared for anything on the course. Myrtle Beach Golf Trips takes the same approach when planning the perfect golf getaway. We start with our Grande Collection of courses, some rated the very best in the nation. Then we throw in the finest accommodations and preferred tee times. Lastly, we squeeze in some amazing deals to make the trip that much more enjoyable. As every golfer knows, it’s the details that count... on and off the course.

rom your first drive over the picturesque bridge, everything about Grande Dunes bespeaks luxury. The Resort Course is, in a word, stunning. From the multi-million dollar Tuscan-style homes that line many of the holes to the immaculately-manicured landscaping, it provides an ambiance for golfers of all skill levels. But what really sets the Resort Course apart from other public courses is its “private club” atmosphere with an impeccably groomed golf course, a variety of driving situations and angles of approach, nestled among old water oaks, tall pines and rolling landscape. 2009 NGCOA Golf Course of the Year.

or the golfer who enjoys a mental challenge, PineHills is an excellent choice. Not only will it force you to think about each shot, it requires you to use the majority of the clubs in your bag, particularly if you play from the blue tees, a challenge that is highly recommended by staff and regulars alike. key measurement of a course’s appeal is how many people want to play it again. One of the top repeat-play courses in Myrtle Beach for nearly two generations, Palmetto’s traditional design offers accommodating Bermuda fairways that slope gently through old-growth pines toward large, subtly undulating Tifdwarf Bermuda greens. Stretching out along the Intracoastal Waterway, the course serves up a variety of hazards and bunkers to test your shot-making abilities. Considered a “character” course, Palmetto also has the welcome surprise of a few wild thrills.

onsidering the extraordinary golf experience Farmstead offers, this is arguably the best deal in the area. Sandpiper Bay Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year 2010 Being awarded “Golf Course of the Year” in Myrtle Beach h is like winning a prize for outstanding contribution ribution in the field field of plastic surgery in Southern California. In both markets, the competition is fierce and the customers know what they like. This year, the coveted distinction of Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year went to Sunset Beach’s Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club. The course was selected from a list of more than 100 contenders, and evaluated on the following criteria: Exceptional Quality of the Golf Course, Exceptional Quality of the Ownership and Management, Outstanding Contribution to the Community and Significant Contribution to the Game. A three-year renovation project completed this summer elevated the quality of the facility to a truly exceptional level. In addition to cosmetic changes to the clubhouse and pro shop, each of the Sandpiper Bay’s 27 greens was converted to MiniVerde Bermuda. “We made a serious business decision in a very difficult economic time in the golf industry to spend the last three years investing in the major improvements you see today at Sandpiper Bay,” said Tim Tilma, Sandpiper’s general manager and recent recipient of the Bill Strausbaugh Award for the Carolinas PGA Section. “Despite the economic conditions, the ownership remained committed to the reinvestment 16

plan to improve this facility. This award and recognition is just one step in the overall master plan and vision we have for this community and the golf course. We hope everyone living in, or visiting the Myrtle Beach area comes to experience the best 27 holes of golf we have to offer.” The Dan Maples-designed golf course is the centerpiece of a residential neighborhood, and gathering place for a thriving membership of more than 400. Many members are permanent residents of Sunset Beach, and the numbers speak to that. The course hosts 55,000 rounds per year, and in its 19 years of operation, Sandpiper Bay has seen nearly one million rounds. In an effort to grow the game, junior golfers can play free with a paying adult, and members and guests can enhance their skills through golf clinics throughout the year. At the end of the day, you’ll agree that the difference at Sandpiper Bay is attitude. “Sandpiper stands out for the primary reason that the entire staff, from the Pipers Restaurant to the cart staff and Richard Kascak’s golf shop staff has always been exceptionally accommodating and pleasant,” wrote Hank Kerfoot, president of Modern Turf, which oversaw the club’s greens renovations. Parkland demonstrates the diversity and beauty of the natural terrain with contoured, tree-lined fairways, vast natural areas, deep–faced bunkers and multi-level greens. Virtually every hole could be its signature hole, each one more dramatic than the one before. The end result is a continuous series of sensational holes that leave you craving more. or more than 20 years, Oyster Bay has been an area favorite because it’s challenging and exceptionally fair, where variety and innovation are the name of the game and no two holes are the same. Its breathtaking beauty has no rival on the Grand Strand and it was recently awarded 4 ½– Stars by Golf Digest in “Places to Play,” and named “Best New Resort Course of the Year.” Oyster Bay’s cavernous bunkers, wickedly-undulating greens and lengthy par 4s make it a true test of one’s mettle.

The Lesson Tee The Four Essentials of Perfect Putting By Brad Redding Director of Instruction The Resort Club at Grande Dunes

A

lot of instructors will tell you that all good golf swings start with a good address. This is as important, if not more, in putting. 1. Eyes directly over the ball. When you aim something, for example when throwing darts, you have the dart in front of your eyes so you can aim it at your target. This holds true in putting. With your eyes over the ball you can see your target line. 2. Hands below your shoulders. Now notice I said hands not arms. With your hands below your shoulders you can make a natural arc stroke. A good putting stroke is on an arc, it does not go straight back and through. Since you are to the side of the golf ball the putter would move slightly inside the target line back to square at impact and then inside the target line on the follow through. As a result the putter face would open in the back stroke to square at impact and the close on the way through. 3. Hips over heels. This allows you to have your weight on the balls of your feet. This will keep you balanced and stable over the putt. You would be able to use your shoulders and arms to control the stroke, while your knees, hips, and head stay still and quiet during the stroke. 4. Putter shaft in line with forearms. This aids you in making a natural arc stroke. To do this you need to hold the putter more in the life line of your lead hand. The shaft will be more upright. After you get these four essentials at address you might sense that your putter is to long or short for you. You can determine the proper length of your putter by using the Pythagorean theory. Measure the length from the crease in the wrist to the floor in inches. This is the vertical leg of the triangle. Measure the distance in inches from you that point from the floor to where the ball is. This is the horizontal leg of the triangle. When you square and add them together this makes the diagonal leg of the triangle which in turn becomes the perfect length of the putter.

arefoot Resort and Golf’s popularity continues to skyrocket thanks to four award-winning courses designed by golf legends Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Tom Fazio and Pete Dye. Besides accolades earned in nearly every top golf publication through the years, Barefoot Resort’s 6,834-yard, par-71 Fazio Course is currently rated No. 96 and the 7,343-yard, par72 Dye Course is No. 99 among Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses 2009-2010. Additionally, Barefoot’s 7,000-yard, par-72 Love Course (No. 1), Fazio Course (No. 6), Dye Course (No.10) and 7,200-yard, par-72 Norman Course (No. 28) were all among Golf Digest’s 2005 Top 50 Courses of Myrtle Beach ranking. But enough about accolades. Let’s get to the heart of the issue and talk about the four reasons they’ve received so many honors: The Courses. THE NORMAN COURSE With multiple holes along the scenic waterway, par-72, 7,000-yard Norman Course is highlighted by the surrounding natural beauty, which frames a majority of his designs. With GN-1 on the tees and fairways, Tifdwarf grass on the approaches and A-1 bentgrass on the greens, the gently undulating terrain will remain as memorable as the course’s most challenging holes. No. 10 is a healthy par-3 measuring 176 yards from the black tees, but the yardage will be the last thing on your mind. To the right lies the In-

tracoastal Waterway, along with four imposing bunkers that protect all other sides of the green. Similar to his colleagues’ work at Barefoot, Norman does not disappoint on the final hole of his design. Another stellar par-5 serves as the dessert for this great layout. THE LOVE COURSE Most golf enthusiasts know Davis Love, III as a tournament champion, but recently Love has been getting noticed for his award-winning designs as well. His talents are certainly on display at the Love Course at Barefoot Resort, a par-72 that encompasses more than 7,000 yards. Similar to the Fazio Course, Loves uses a mix of GN-1 on the fairways, Tif-sport Bermuda grass on the approaches and A-1 bentgrass on the course’s greens.

Love’s unique flair for tradition can be found first on No. 4, an intriguing par-4 measuring just 280 yards from the black tees. Despite playing uphill and being guarded by bunkers and water, this hole is drivable for many players. But be careful of balls that are hit too long, as there are Scottish castle ruins just beyond the green. THE FAZIO COURSE A shining example of what has made Tom Fazio’s name a legend amongst golfers, The Fazio Course traverses the natural sand dunes and Lowcountry forest which surrounds Barefoot Resort. Tee off on fairways of GN-1, a hybrid turf, which evolves into Tif-sport Bermuda grass on the approaches. The imagination of Tom Fazio takes center stage as you arrive to lucky number 13. A midsize, par-4 measuring 361 yards from the black tees, this hole is often the source of tales of both glory and despair. The focal point of 13 is no doubt the green complexes. A well-positioned tee ball must be employed in order to properly attack the appropriate putting surface. On the

The first hole is a narrow dog-leg left, bordered by waste areas to the left, and mounding to the right. This classic Dye opening test will immediately remind you that it’s time to play. Pete Dye has made his mark all over the world, but only one course has been honored with the title of The Dye Club. Take full advantage of everything this course has to offer by enjoying a post-round beverage or fine dining in the Dye Clubhouse, which boasts magnificent views of holes 9, 10 and 18. Barefoot’s golf amenities include a 30-acre range with a sports bar; GPS-equipped golf cars; chair massages; and complimentary shoe shines.
