obert White was a man responsible p ffor many firsts. White h was the h first president of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America and a cofounder of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. His most significant foray into the field of golf course design probably won’t be remembered as one of America’s greatest golf courses, but it will be looked upon as the first ripple in a wave of golf course construction that eventually resulted in the Golf Capital of the World. In 1927, what is now known as Pine Lakes Country Club was built as a complement to the now extinct Ocean Forest Hotel; a playground for high society types, such as the Vanderbilts and Rockerfellers. Since then, Myrtle Beach has blossomed into the world’s preemi6

The recent rebirth of Myrtle Beach’s “Granddaddy” has ushered in a new era of golf on the Grand Strand. Suffice to say that Pine Lakes’ return will be greeted with considerable enthusiasm, but now the region’s elder statesman must share the spotlight with more than 100 Grand Strand golf courses, a swath of hotels, condominiums and resorts, an unrivaled collection of miniature golf courses and seemingly endless outlets for family entertainment. When it comes to offering a large quantity of quality golf courses, Myrtle Beach remains the unbeaten incumbent. One of the premier providers of golf vaca-

A GAME CHANGER It’s hard to ignore the impact the Internet has had on the way we plan and go about our day. There is a wealth of information on just about any subject under the sun. The big question is: How much of what you read should you believe? Some of the most credible sites are those that allow individuals to post comments about their experiences - authentic, unsolicited remarks and recommendations that can help you make informed decisions. That was exactly the inspiration for Myrtle Beach Golf Insider (wwwMBGolfInsiderGG.com), an incredible resource for golfers by golfers. It’s a place where you’ll find candid remarks about every golf course in the Myrtle Beach area, with golfers commenting on everything from course design, condition, service and value, to pace of play, nature sightings, lost clubs and more. More than 7,500 reviews have already been posted to date, and you can expect a surge of new reviews to be posted during the spring golf season. In addition to invaluable insight from fellow golfers, MBGolfInsiderGG.com lets you check course pricing and tee times, view videos, formulate a golf itinerary with or without lodging options, all without leaving this review filled site. And when the occasional negative comment is posted, the course is notified so that they have an opportunity to address it. Not every review is positive. The weather can sometimes impact an otherwise great round. We can’t always control that, and we do need an occasional rain to make the grass grow. You’re also likely to find reviews like the one from Richard (Niagara Falls, ONT 18 handicap, 1/12/11): “Greens were shabby… course was in the worse shape of all we played…always liked it, so a bit disappointed,” or Fred (Scott Plains, NJ, 6 handicap, 11/24/10): “Pace of play is terrible, but otherwise a great course. Why is it that it’s always a 5-hour to 5-hour and 15 minutes round here?” These are posted for golfers’ review and forwarded to the course to be addressed. This kind of comment allows course operators to improve the overall Golf Experience.

When you think about it, it takes a lot of confidence, and sometimes a dash of humility, to create a forum where your customers can really speak their mind and others can read it. Especially on topics that are as subjective as golf. After all, what one person might consider a great golf experience might

843-235-4997 014-016 Golf Insider.indd 2

be viewed in a very different light by someone who had a bad round for other reasons. What one golfer may consider fast greens might not be viewed the same way by another. Challenging for one golfer might be entirely too difficult for another. And a fussy ranger might seem rude to the guy that is lolly-gagging and holding up everyone behind him. Sometimes that’s the burden you bear for doing your job. So keep these things in mind as you cull through the posts. Once you’re satisfied that you’ve selected courses that will fulfill your requirements of challenge, design, condition and price, you can stay on MBGolfInsiderGG.com to check rates and available tee times, and then book your entire visit online and in real time. If you would like some personal assistance, either via online chat or by phone, that is available, too.

The Pearl A Priceless Gem

T

hey can often be found nimbly dangling from the neck of a Southern woman occupying a place in high society. A frequently uttered adage connects them to sage words of advice. Objects of beauty and valued gemstones, their shine and luster are unmistakable, especially when formed naturally at sea. Their appearance provokes thoughts of excellence, class and charm. In accordance with its namesake, the 36-hole golf facility found at the northern edge of the Grand Strand known simply as The Pearl is also a rare find and highlyregarded gem. Located in the tiny, coastal North Carolina town of Calabash that modestly refers to itself as the “Seafood Capital of the World,” the golf club occupies a pristine setting, is consistently kept in championship condition and has been well-received by golf’s most esteemed publications. In 2008, The Pearl’s East Course received a notable 4-Star rating in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” list. Not to be outdone, the West Course was rated 4.5 Stars by Golf Digest in 2004. The same publication 20

020-021 The Pearl Edit.indd 1

also nominated the West Course as one of America’s “Best New Public Courses” when it opened in 1988. Both courses have been ranked among the best in the Carolinas. While its geographical position puts The Pearl on the outer reaches of Myrtle Beach’s metropolitan area, we’re confident that this pair of outstanding layouts, cut from a 900acre swath of stunningly beautiful marsh preserve framed by the Calabash River, will be on your yearly Grand Strand golf itinerary immediately following your first visit. Golf at The Pearl Both designed by popular Pinehurstbased golf architect Dan Maples, who was also the creative mind behind Myrtle Beach’s The Witch and The Wizard, the twin 18-hole tracks at The Pearl are identical in terms of substance, but fraternal in terms of style. The East Course, which was completely renovated a decade ago, can be characterized as a traditional parkland layout. It’s carved through acres of pristine forest and features one scenic view after another. The most

memorable aspect of this 18 is a wonderfully dynamic finish along the banks of the Calabash River. Hole No. 18 is a true titan of a par 5. It requires three well-struck shots if you are to have any chance at making birdie. The entire left side is bordered by a sparkling lake. Players must be careful not to bite off more than they can chew as the entire hole slopes towards the water. The West Course is a links-style design with plenty of wide-open stretches complemented by thick displays of pampas grass. The last four holes feature a dramatic finish along the bluffs overlooking the coastal marshland and scenic Calabash River. Attention to detail and meticulous grooming characterizes the course, which has played host to a number of major tournaments. The West course offers plenty of challenge, along with untouched natural beauty. This 18 also finishes with a wonderful par 5. Bisected by a lake, the key to playing this par 5 is hitting the tee shot just short of the bunker at the corner of the fairway. Club choice is crucial on this tee shot because shots hit into or over the bunker are immediately in danger of making double bogey. A well-placed shot in front of the bunker will give players from 190 to 220 yards left into the green. Will you go for glory? These courses leave golfers with both a taste of Southern charm and sense of golf the way it was meant to be. Ask almost anyone who has played The Pearl, and they’ll tell you that it’s difficult to drive away uninspired. Remember, “Sometimes it’s where you play that affects how you play.”

key measurement of a course’s appeal is how many people want to play it again. One of the top repeat-play courses in Myrtle Beach for nearly two generations, Palmetto’s traditional design offers accommodating Bermuda fairways that slope gently through old-growth pines toward large, subtly undulating Tifdwarf Bermuda greens. or the golfer who enjoys a mental challenge, PineHills is an excellent choice. Scenic & Challenging:

Meadowlands & Farmstead Offer Great Rates and Southern Hospitality

S

ome of the most challenging, scenic, memorable and affordable courses on the Grand Strand can be found far from the center of town, near the border between South and North Carolina. Meadowlands Golf Club is one of those courses. Tucked just over the state line near Calabash, N.C., it’s a course that has stood the test of time. Golfers who book a tee time there are rewarded with pristine marsh and water views, warm welcomes and great service. And, since Myrtle Beach’s premier golf managers, Burroughs & Chapin Golf Management, have the reins at the course, expect great conditioning. Meadowlands offers golfers a collection of interesting holes, including solid par 3’s and a couple of par 5’s reachable in two. For the big hitters, it spans more than 7,000 yards but ratchets down to a manageable 5,000 yards for forward tee players. Many of the holes are parkland style

26

026-027 B and C.indd 1

with trees lining the fairways to catch errant shots, but Meadowlands also has its fair share of open meadow holes that provide plenty of room to work the ball. Built to Audubon International guidelines, the course is known as a haven for wildlife and for its preservation of native hardwood trees, natural wetlands and expansive meadows. Freshwater lakes dot the landscape, mostly adjacent to the fairways, and are sometimes hidden from the tee by carefully-placed mounding or trees. Architect Willard Byrd saved his carries over water mostly for the par 3s, ensuring the course is manageable for those striking the ball well. The overall atmosphere at Meadowlands is that of a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. The entire facility has the feel of a tidy, well-manicured farm, a feeling reinforced by the rough-hewn farmhouse-style clubhouse with its large

p porches made for kicking back with a cold drink after a round. d Golfers seeking a championship experieence with reasonable fees will find it at Meadowlands. Classified as a mid-tier M ccourse along the Grand Strand, it delivers a high-value experience and will pleasantly ssurprise high-rollers used to playing more eexpensive courses in the area. Add in the hearty dose of Southern hospitality that’s in h big supply there, and Meadowlands classib fies as a hidden gem along the coast. When it opened, Meadowlands was rranked by NC Magazine as one of N.C.’s top 10 new courses. Golf Digest readers continue to give it 3 ½ stars, recommending it as a good bet to build a golf vacation around — especially when teamed with its sister course, Farmstead Golf Links which is less than a mile away. Farmstead is best known for its mammoth 767-yard, 18th hole, which Golf Digest named one of the “most fun holes you can play in America” in 2010. The only par 6 on the Grand Strand, 18 actually begins with a drive into a wide sweeping fairway in South Carolina and concludes on a large undulating green in North Carolina. Though that dual-state finishing hole gives golfers a lasting memory, it’s the other 17 holes that bring them back. The course is routed along the contours of the land and provides countless views of the area’s native grasses and freshwater lakes. Playable for golfers of all skill levels, this Willard Byrd and David Johnson-design offers five sets of tees and three par 3s on the backside. A par 72, the layout is framed by waist-high native grasses along several fairways, giving the course a look that is unique along the Grand Strand. The golf experience at Farmstead is enhanced by an 8,000-square-foot Georgian style clubhouse that includes a full-service pro shop, grille and lounge. The clubhouse SPRING 2011

features a veranda that offers a spectacular view of the first tee and 18th green, making it the perfect place for a post-round drink. Tee times can be booked independently (Meadowlands 888-287-7529 or 910-287-7529; Farmstead 866-749-7277 or 910-575-7999) or as part of a golf trip arranged by any number of packagers, including Myrtle Beach Golf Trips (www.myrtlebeachgolftrips.com). mmediately after it opened, Meadowlands received honors as one of the “Top 10 Best New Courses” from North Carolina Magazine. Since, it has earned a place on the prestigious Golf for Women list of “Top 100 Women-Friendly Courses,” thanks to five sets of tees, an open layout, well-defined hazards, superb conditioning of the TifDwarf Bermuda greens and an attention to detail creating a rewarding experience for everyone. onsidering the extraordinary golf experience Farmstead offers, this is arguably the best deal in the area. In a natural, windswept, 480-acre setting comfortably removed from developed areas, the course affords golfers the luxury of playing in almost perfect privacy. Willard Byrd designed linksstyle fairways that gently follow the lay of the land to create a collection of shotmaking opportunities. ete Dye set out to create something that would linger in the golfer’s mind forever. Bordering the natural white sands of the Carolina Bays, this semi-private course is filled with the infamous pitfalls for wayward shots that have become synonymous with the Dye name. Both beautiful and treacherous, the Dye Course is an experience you won’t soon forget. The fairways are GN-1 Bermuda grass, a hybrid developed by Greg Norman Turf. The approaches are Tifdwarf Bermuda grass, the greens are L-93 bentgrass and the dramatic visual effects are achieved by the Centipede and Zoysia grass roughs.

M

yrtle Beach is home to more than 100 world world-class class golf courses and welcomes millions of golfers to its “Grand Strand” every year. With such a true allegiance from the most avid of golfers, it’s logical that the region boasts some of the largest and most sophisticated golf stores in the country. Of those, it’s worth noting that Golf Dimensions has been serving visiting golfers to Myrtle Beach for the past two decades. Family-owned and family-operated for 22 years, Golf Dimensions boasts two large and fully stocked superstores in Myrtle Beach, in addition to a 3rd on-course custom-fitting location at the Barefoot Resorts gorgeous 35-acre driving range facility. In 1989 Bobby and Mary (with 3 sons), together with parents Bob

Sr. and Barbara all took early retirements relofrom previous successful careers to relo cate from Richmond, Va. to Myrtle Beach in pursuit of Bobby’s dream for the family to own and operate golf retail stores. Golf Dimensions is proof the American dream is still alive! Despite the passing of Bob, Sr. in October 2009 Golf Dimensions still remains a Father/Son business as two of Bobby and Mary’s sons (Chris and Jonathan) chose the family business for career choice after earning their college degrees. What started as a 1-door facility with 6300sf has now grown into a 3-location operation totaling more than 75,000sf of specialty golf retail. “We have worked hard and been blessed for our efforts” says Bobby. “My Dad will be sorely missed as he touched the lives of many

people who never knew about his acts of kindness and charitable donations to our community. Our family has a great legacy to protect and continue forward!” The minute a golfer enters a Golf Dimensions’ location they receive the same kind of customer service and attention to detail they find at the many acclaimed golf courses that have made Myrtle Beach the “Golfing Capital of the World”. Commitment is everything, and Golf Dimensions is not only committed to excellent customer service and value but also to helping grow the game through a multitude of avenues. Now more than ever and despite difficult economic times, that commitment to the game and to the region’s golf product is truly evident. Golf Dimensions has now partnered with one of the leading amateur events in the country as the title sponsor of the Father/Son Team new ti Classic, which has been attracting more Classi 1,700 golfers to the Myrtle Beach than 1 for the past 14 years. “Given we’re a area fo Father/Son business makes this event a perfect fit for our family’s business. Jonathan and I look forward to participating in this event with my Dad in the years to come” says Chris. Jonathan added “my Grandfather would be very proud that we have partnered our company with an event of this magnitude that honors the family relationship.” The event is played over three days and on more than 10 Grand Strand courses. The tournament is scheduled July 21-23 this year. As a sponsor, Golf Dimensions will serve as the registration location for the event and will also provide a gift card to players upon check in. At the same time golfers will have the opportunity to shop what is the Largest “Golf-Only” Superstore on the Grand Strand. LOCAL PGA PROFESSIONALS EARN CAROLINAS PGA HONORS Mac Hood, PGA of Farmstead Golf Links and Meadowlands Golf Club in Calabash, N.C. made a major career change in 1992 when he left the financial district in New York City to pursue his passion for the game of golf by becoming a PGA professional. Just shy of 20 years have past and he has proven himself most worthy of this year’s Carolinas PGA Bill Strausbaugh award, recognizing excellence in mentorship, guidance, character and integrity. Since attaining membership in 1998, he’s made it a point to not only give back to those who supported him along the way, but also provide counsel and sound advice to those wishing to do the same. It’s his realistic and common sense approach to becoming a professional that has made him a valued mentor to countless assistants for the past 13 years, including his own son Brendan Hood, who attained membership this year. Hood extends his knowledge and love of the game to every corner of its practice as a former CPGA Area Director, a member of The PGA of America’s President’s Council, and chairman of the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame Committee. His diligent and faithful service also includes volunteer work as a rules official, an instructor at Play Golf America Day programs, and his work in nearby communities where he is a member of the Rotary International in North Myrtle Beach and the current chairman of the Board of Directors of the Little River Chamber of Commerce. Mac Hood has formerly been awarded the 2004 Merchandiser of the Year award in the public facilities category. This year, his service to the game, fellow professionals and his community have made Mac Hood a likely and most worthy choice as Carolinas PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award winner. Matt Biddington of Legends Resort (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) is this year’s Resort Merchandiser of the Year. Biddington has been the merchandiser at the multi-course Legends Resort in Myrtle Beach for the last three years, and changing his style of buying has helped him increase profit and maximize space as he developed his merchandising philosophies over that time. Those philosophies include simplifying buying practices, and placing moderately priced items. This has allowed him to bundle items and shift price points while still keeping up with the latest trends and fashions and providing items that a wide variety of customers at the resort level can appreciate. With three years as PGA Member and as merchandiser at Legends Resort under his belt, Biddington has already made a big impression in how operations are run there. The Merchandiser of the Year awards recognize those who have proven themselves to be successful in supplying quality merchandise to their patrons, presenting their staff with effective marketing ideas and tools, and superior merchandising techniques, performance and shop operations.

Hood and Biddington, along with eight other Special Awards and Honors recipients, the 2010 Players of the Year, Johnny Palmer Trophy winner, and our 2010 Hall of Fame Inductee, Mike Harmon, will be honored at the Carolinas PGA Section’s annual Big Week Special Awards and Honors Ceremony presented by Club Car on February 20, 2011 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. They will be the focal point of a celebration of their accomplishments and contributions to our Section and The PGA of America.

The Witch traverses 500 acres of pristine forest. The definition of what exactly makes a golf course exceptional is a question with as many answers as there are golfers. But for players visiting Myrtle Beach, the answer time and time again is the same: the three golf courses of the Mystical Golf Group. SPRING 2011

041-043 Mystical Golf.indd 1

Over the last two decades, Man O’ War, The Wizard and The Witch have garnered a well-earned reputation as three of Myrtle Beach’s most memorable plays, thanks to their exciting designs and superb year-round conditioning. Their success is no accident or simple

The Wizard, where Scottish influences are abundant.

good fortune either. Each was among the area’s most thoughtfully plotted golf courses when conceived, and will continue to serve as the area’s most acclaimed courses for many years to come. While each facility shares some common overall traits - like pristine conditioning and top-notch service and amenities - their varied designs and unique settings couldn’t be any more different from one another. Play the three Mystical Golf courses and you’ll enjoy three entirely different experiences. A result of one of the most ambitious golf projects in the history of the Grand Strand, The Witch envelops you in more than 500 acres of dense Carolina forest and natural wetlands. No holes parallel each other, creating an atmosphere of peaceful tranquility far from all of the action just minutes away in Myrtle Beach. Holes dogleg around tall pines and ponds, home to native families of alligators and several species of indigenous wildlife. It’s unquestionably one of the area’s most scenic properties and features more natural, rolling undulation than practically any other course along the coast. 42

041-043 Mystical Golf.indd 2

This one-of-a-kind setting makes for an enchanting 18 holes amidst surreal scenery and has contributed to Golf Digest’s rating of The Witch as the “Myrtle Beach area’s most underrated course.” Head just a few miles east from The Witch and you’ll discover two more entirely different worlds of golf to experience. The Man O’ War and The Wizard occupy the same 500-acre piece of land aside one another in Carolina Forest and feature large bentgrass greens. But from here, the differences are apparent once you see each facility’s respective clubhouses, from Man O’ War’s wharf-style fishing

shack to The Wizard’s famous medieval castle ruin. The centerpiece of the property is an expansive 100-acre lake, which hosts some of the most dramatic holes on both courses. The dirt taken out during construction helped build a links-style masterpiece at The Wizard, full of towering dunes and mounding unlike anything you’ll find on the Grand Strand. The Wizard takes golfers back to the style of traditional links golf, full of tumbling fairways and high dunes framing their perimeters. Tall heather adds to that old-world effect, and on many days, wind sweeps through this largely treeless property just as it does on the links of Scotland. Man O’ War, on the other hand, is a championship style beast - the longest of the three Mystical Golf courses at 7,000 yards, including two par 5s stretching over 600 yards. Water is in play on every hole, including island greens and an entire island hole on the devilish par 4 ninth hole. Now nearly 15 years old and in the prime of their existences, it can go unnoticed just how revolutionary both courses’ construction was, not just in making the lake such a central part of the designs, but the groundbreaking approach in how their greens were built. Each features bentgrass greens that roll as true as any you’ll find in the Grand Strand at any given time of year. A secret to the success comes as a result of bucking the conventional golf design wisdom. Unlike standard USGA greens that aare seeded with the exact same ssoil mix on each green, at The Wiza Wizard and Man O’ War, each green ssite was seeded slightly SPRING 2011

041-043 Mystical Golf.indd 3

different from the next, based on specific elevation, sunlight and natural soil mix. They were also built large enough so as to not only offer limitless pin positions, but to be able to withstand foot traffic during the busiest times of year. At the time, this technique was so revolutionary that the legendary Pinehurst No. 2, located up the road in North Carolina, monitored the progress and results at The Wizard and applied some of the very same strategy when they reseeded their greens in preparation for the 1999 U.S. Open. Groundbreaking enough to influence the major championships of golf, though affordable and player-friendly enough for anyone to enjoy again and again; that’s what makes the three courses of Mystical Golf true standouts amongst the many golf courses of Myrtle Beach. he Parkland was designed to complement nature so closely that it makes the layout indistinguishable from nature itself. Parkland demonstrates the diversity and beauty of the natural terrain with contoured, tree-lined fairways, vast natural areas, deep–faced bunkers and multi-level greens. Virtually every hole could be its signature hole, each one more dramatic than the one before. The end result is a continuous series of sensational holes that leave you craving more. For Better Chipping Try the 6 - 8 - 10 Method The golden rule in chipping is, fly the ball as little as possible and roll the ball as much as possible (while still landing th the ball on the putting surface). The feet are together and angled slightly toward the hole. The most important aspect of chipping (besides choosing the right club) is to make sure that the left wrist (right wrist for left-handers) does not break down during the chipping motion. The moment the wrist breaks down two things happen: 1. The loft on the club changes, therefore changing the trajectory that in turn affects the roll of the ball. Inconsistent distances will result. 2. The arm breaks down as well, causing bladed shots that go screaming across the green. To ensure that neither of these things happen, work on keeping your arm straight and your wrist firm during the shot. If you find this difficult to achieve in practice, try this: Take a thick rubber band and place it around your wrist. Slide the butt end of the club under the elastic band, keeping the butt end of the club close to the wrist. This will give you the correct feel when chipping the ball. If you wish to lower your handicap, miss a few sessions on the driving range, and head for the chipping green instead. You’ll love the results to your game - your opponents won’t! Learning Good Habits Through the Game of Golf

T

he Myrtle Beach golf industry is built around the premise of providing the current generation of golfers with supreme service, playing conditions and value. However, one organization is focused on giving the next generation something entirely different, but is also using golf as the vehicle to accomplish its mission. At its core The First Tee of Myrtle Beach, and the other 200 chapters like it nationwide, help young people in the community, many of whom are considered at-risk, learn good habits through the game of golf. Initially part of the non-profit Shared Care, Inc., The First Tee of Myrtle Beach was established in 2004 as an early intervention and prevention program for the youth of Horry County. In 2005 life and golf skills programming was put into action and proved to be the best summer experience ever for many of the young people who participated. During the spring, summer and fall of 2011 a variety of programs will be offered. Class sessions will use golf as the tool to teach participants character, proper etiquette 56

and Rules Golf. d The Th R l off G lf Students will be instructed using The Life Skills Experience curriculum, the foundation of which is built around nine core values: Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Courtesy, Confidence, Perseverance, Judgment and Sportsmanship. Please check The First Tee Web site for details about locations and programs offered at www.thefirstteemyrtlebeach.org. Golf Mirrors Life Throughout the course of 2011 those of us who closely follow golf, and mostly anyone who turns on the television or reads the news for that matter, will learn that even our heroes in this gentleman’s game aren’t immune to failures and colossal falls from grace. But your golf game, much like your character in life, is measured by your recovery shot. Through its curriculum and teaching methods, The First Tee aims to teach the youth of the community to set and achieve goals for any situation that may arise in everyday life. The ultimate goal is to develop

the next generation into productive and d community-minded citizens. The First Tee of Myrtle Beach will deliver lessons that will improve a junior golfer’s game, but more importantly will mold young men and women into future leaders in Horry County and beyond. Growth Beyond Expectations What started in July 2005 with a group of eight students and eight volunteers as a pilot project has blossomed into an effort that requires dozens of volunteers to coor coordinate and instruct hundreds of students. In 2007 The First Tee of Myrtle Beach registered 473 students through spring, sumregister mer an and fall sessions. This went above and beyond any expectations or goals set by the organiz organization’s leadership that included Rev. Joseph E. Washington and Robert Harper, Preside President of the Carolinas PGA. The program had stretched to include separate programs for each level of The First Tee Life Skills Experience including 13 class options at nine different locations throughout Horry County. In 2008, 387 youths in Horry County were involved in the First Tee Program. Classes were led by trained lead coaches. Coaches from The Golf Academy of America, Coastal Carolina University’s Professional Golf Management, PGA and LPGA golf professionals have stepped up to provide a comprehensive and seamless delivery of life and golf skills to the yyouth of our 0

community. Classes were held community weekly for 90 minutes and each session lasted for 12 weeks. Classes included a continuous assessment of life and golf skills. Golf Clinics, USGA Rules Workshops and lessons emphasizing The First Tee Nine Core Values were held during the summer sessions. The Next Chapter The First Tee of Myrtle Beach has successfully launched The National School Program in 10 area elementary schools, allowing a greater opportunity to transition interested students into the After School Program. The First Tee of Myrtle Beach’s National School Program has been able to touch more than 5,000 area students. Future plans identify a complete roll-out to all elementary schools in Horry County, with the ability to impact more than 20,000 children. The recent generous donation of 10K from the Hootie & The Blowfish’s Monday After The Master’s organization will allow the implementation of the program to come to fruition. Anyone interested in making a donation to The First Tee of Myrtle Beach or volunteering their time to help with coaching participants during the after school program should contact Program Director, Ryan Hart at (843) 913-1302 or at rhart@ thefirstteemyrtlebeach.org

State of the Game JIM HART Campus Director GOLF ACADEMY OF AMERICA - CAROLINAS 3268 Waccamaw Blvd. Myrtle Beach, SC 29579

I

’ve worked in the golf industry my entire career. Upon graduating from the University of Florida, I played professional golf for two years. In 1981, I was hired as tournament director for the Carolinas Section of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America. After an 18-year stint with the Carolinas PGA (the last 14 as executive director), I got into the golf course ownership business in 2000. My partners and I owned and operated two golf courses in North Carolina until I started my present position as campus director for the Golf Academy of AmericaThe Carolinas in 2008. Golf is what I’ve done for the past 30 years. It’s what I know. It’s what I do. What’s on the horizon for the golf business? Let’s take a peek. The golf industry has been on a bumpy road in recent years. Number of rounds is down nationwide, and golf revenues are also down. What does this mean for the consumer? Well, there are certainly some great deals out there! Public courses are offering lower greens fees. Some even offer bells and whistles like a free sleeve of balls, free breakfast or lunch, a couple draft beers or even a cookout or pizza dinner. Owners have had to get creative to attract business as there are lots of courses and a finite number of players. Private clubs are also competing for 86

business either lowering or eliminating initiation fees altogether. Many are offering reduced or complimentary dues for referring new members to the club. What about golf on TV? Since Tiger Woods has not been in contention over the past year, ratings have slipped. The diehard golf fan is still watching, but without Tiger in the mix, the casual fan doesn’t tune in. As I write this, the 58th PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, is about to kick off. It’s the largest gathering of golf industry insiders in the world with over 40,000 attendees and 1,000 golf companies exhibiting in the 1 million squarefoot Orange County Convention Center. What is the mood going into this year’s Show? Optimism and enthusiasm! Golf has faced its share of challenges with the economy like most businesses, but the outlook is positive. As the season approaches, and spring is just around the corner, people’s thoughts turn to getting back outdoors and playing golf. At the Golf Academy of America, our mission is to prepare men and women for successful careers in the golf industry. There are challenges, no doubt, but the best trained and best prepared will prosper. Golf has had its recession. It’s now starting on the road to recovery. The next step is returning to profitability. I see that day coming sooner rather than later!
