t seems like we went from a quiet slumber around here to a full speed race as the snowbirds arrived early and ready to play golf. Probably the biggest reason all those snow birds come here is because they find many opportunities to play golf. Just take a look inside at our list of close to 200 courses in this market if you need proof. You can play public courses from San Carlos in Fort Myers to Valencia or Arrowhead in Naples. If you are looking for a semi-private venue try playing the newly renovated Treviso Bay in Naples before it becomes totally private. Looking for a challenge and a special environment? Make a tee time out at Old Corkscrew in Estero where Jack Nicklaus designed a really beautiful and one of his most challenging golf courses. While you are out there, if you are looking to tweak your game, just stop in for a lesson or swing analysis with Mike Calbot, the world renowned “Golf Doctor.” Mike traveled to Egypt last fall where he performed his famous trick shot show. He may be the only golfer to hit golf balls in front of the pyramids. A number or courses in the area are looking for a few new members. Always Use the Right Tool You’re in a greenside bunker - you always have to hit the sand wedge – right? WRONG; many times a different, lower lofted club is the right one for your situation. Look at your golf bag as a “bag of tools”. It is important for your score to be able to reach in that bag and pull out the best tool for the situation. Let’s say that you are in the greenside bunker about 40 yards from the flagstick. Don’t automatically pull out the sand wedge. The use of a better “tool” will make the shot easier to execute and will allow you to hit those shots closer to the hole. Experiment using a wedge, 9 iron or even an 8 iron. Set up normally as you would for a bunker shot, align feet to the left (to the right for left handers), clubface square to the target line (open to the line of your feet) and hit the shot just like you would a sand shot, impacting the sand behind the ball and keeping the clubface open through the shot. Getting More Distance requires team work! By Mike Calbot, “The Golf Doctor” Swing Analyst and Master Golf Instructor

ll golfers want more distance. Some do not need more distance but most average golfers do. What is the simple solution to get more distance? Team work! Think of the body parts as a team, mainly your torso, arms and legs. Golfers that maintain the distance between their forearms to stay constant from the address to the top of the swing then, on their down swing and through the ball have more control and distance. When the forearms separate this causes the clubs path to change in some cases to loop. When the forearms separate it makes the depth of the swing arc smaller resulting in loss of speed. The legs, when you watch a good golfer or professional take a close look at the pivot of the hips especially on the forward motion and you will notice the legs do not separate and the thighs come closer together as well do the knees at the finish position. In contrast the average golfers legs and arms separate throughout

the backswing and downswing which also means that there is no team work between the torso, arms and legs. We call this team work timing in a swing the order of the motion. Tempo is the speed in which this order moves. Poor tempo can cause poor timing however the best way to check out your positions and learn the control of your team is to use a simple car wash sponge. Place the sponge between your forearms at address just above your wrists now take a practice swing. If you find this difficult to do there are several reasons. First how your arms are set at address, to stiff with your wrists on the takeaway, not turning your torso in your back swing. There are so many reasons why but the easy way is to try to figure the way to just do it and if you can not it time to get some game assistance. Good luck with your game and remember “Practice alone does not make perfect perfect practice makes perfect”
