t’s here. The “Season” that is, and it is in full swing, so to speak. And if the past few weeks are any indication, it is shaping up to be hugely successful for all our golfing friends and associates. Courses are in great shape, tee times are available and the weather is trying to keep our golf shirts on and our jackets off. As I write this, we are quickly approaching one of the premier Champions Tour events down here in the Naples area, The ACE Classic. In the 23-year history of the event, it has yielded more than $3 million to various charity initiatives in the Southwest Florida area. I am very pleased to be affiliated with Kevin Rooney the tournament director and his outstanding staff, and we at Golfer’s Guide are proud to do what we can to support its great causes. With the season getting warmed up, our friend Mike Calbot “The Golf Doctor” is getting ready for another season of lessons and swing analysis out at the training center at Old Corkscrew. Not only a great instructor, Mike is a world-renowned trick shot artist. He graciously donated some special free lessons to us for a give away at our Ace Classic booth. I appreciate Mike’s support and urge anyone seeking to improve their game to contact him at Old Corkscrew. Spring in SW Florida always brings a great group of young people to the golfing communities down here. It’s always a special day for the Gram’s and Gramp’s to get out there and play a few holes with these young enthusiastic players. The future of our golfing world lies in the many days and lessons we share with our visitors. Solid Move… Solid Results

o a golfer, there are few things in life that are as sweet as a well struck golf ball. It feels different, it sounds different, it flies different and the results are usually different. This is our quest, isn’t it? That’s why we trudge out to the range for hours on end, to replicate that sound, that feeling, that flight. So how can we at one moment hit a world class golf shot and at the other look like a world class buffoon? It boils down to a lack of consistency, the reason why we hit that awesome heart thumping shot, was because every part of the golf swing was working in perfect harmony and the club was delivered to the ball at the optimum angle and impact point. So, to build consistency we need to hone a very consistent repeatable golf swing. One that will produce those great shots we just can’t get enough of. Here are a few easy check points that may help you hone that repeatable swing. During your take away, have your left bicep come across your chest and try and

have your left elbow make contact with your right shoulder. At the top of your backswing, your right hand should be in a position where it feels like you are a waiter holder a tray of food. At this point in your swing, you are in a perfect position to make your all important move toward the ball. As you are at the top of your backswing, feel like you want to jab yourself in your left thigh with the butt end of your club and begin your downswing with this swing thought. If you make your move on the ball in this fashion, your club will be in the correct position and on the proper plane to strike the ball at it’s most optimum point, creating a very well struck and solid shot. This movement may feel a little awkward to you at first, but the more you work with it during your practice session and get into the rhythm of… bicep, chest, elbow, shoulder, tray….. JAB THIGH!! The better and better your results will become.

Tal’s Ten Point Check for Better Golf 1. Alignment – always use an intermedi-

ate target (every shot) in your pre shot routine. Remember that you must be aligned parallel with your target line. Posture – stand erect, bend at waist so that your arms hang over the end of your toes clap your hands together then slide your lower hand down to the point it would be on the club – you’re set! Clubface – if you have difficulty feeling a square clubface you can raise the club a couple of inches, this will allow (by the vertical orientation of the club) to see if the club is “square” to your line Ball position – looking at yourself in the mirror (full face) while bending from the waist clap your hands together – sliding your right hand down to where it would be on the club notice how the triangle created by your arms and shoulders is “skewed” toward your front foot. The extension of a line in the middle of this triangle will indicate your proper ball position. Wrist hinge – take your address position, now hinge the club straight up in front of you with your wrists. This motion will simulate the proper wrist hinge in your swing. Remember you hinge your wrists rather than rolling your forearms. Takeaway – the club always stays on the target line in the first motion in the swing. Be careful not to take the club back inside the line – this is called trapped!

more powerful and the straighter you will hit the ball. Always strive to increase your swing radius – the wider your swing the better. Release – split your hands on the golf club and make a few full golf swings. Make sure to allow your bottom hand to get over your top hand in your follow through. By splitting your hands you will better feel what your bottom hand must do in the proper release. Finish position – take any club in your bag and turn it upside down holding the club just under the head by the shaft in your right hand (for right handers left hand for left handers). Now simulate the swing making an “L” position at the top of your backswing and swishing the club through impact to a full finish. At your finish position your eyes, shoulders and hips should be parallel with the horizon and the club will finish between your shoulder and your ear. This is the swish drill! Always remember to have fun on the golf course. A smile will always cut strokes off your score!
