Westchase Golf Club 20th Anniversary Season a Platinum Experience

And it’s in the details that Westchase Golf Club separates itself from other upscale public courses. We’ve already mentioned the location (a great place for visitors to play their first and last rounds during a visit to the Tampa Bay area). There’s the maturing of the SeaDwarf Seashore Paspalum greens that are headed into their fifth season—a grass that doesn’t have to be overseeded in the winter, providing consistent, and consistently gorgeous green color, no matter the season. And the nature-trail-like ride through the 213-acre Westchase layout will take you over 16 lakes (on vertically-planked bridges—you won’t believe what an improvement that is over the bumpy railroad-tie bridges at many courses), around 21 wetland areas and 14 upland conservation areas, and through forests of cypress, oak, maple and pine trees, a couple of which have hosted nesting pairs of bald eagles. The migratory birds are just one of the numerous species of wildlife you’ll encounter at Westchase, sharing the habitat with deer, turtles, bobcats, and of course, the occasional alligator.

A Challenge for All Players Like the customer service, Clifton’s design is understated, but terrifically challenging, and a whole lot of fun for players of all skill levels. The par-72 layout isn’t gimmicky and is only 6700 yards from the tips, but you’ll get all you want from four solid par-5s, four par-4s that can play at over 400 yards, and a set of par-3s that’ll send you to your bag for a different club off the tee on each one. Many of the greens, beginning with #1, encourage you to run the ball up, but a solid aerial game comes in handy with more than a dozen holes at Westchase featuring water in-play. If Westchase boasted a “signature” hole, it would likely be the par-3 third that challenges players to clear wetlands and a pond to reach a bulkheaded green that 10

angles away from tee from left to right. A mixture of pines and palms border the fairways and separate the set-back homes on the three par-4s in the middle of the front nine, and the three finishing par-4s are quite a challenge for those trying to bring it home strong. A state-of-the-art GPS system on all carts will guide you along the way. The only two parallel holes at Westchase are the 9th and 18th, both with marshland carries to greens visible from the Westchase Grill, the clubhouse dining room and veranda. been re-surfaced with TifEagle Bermuda grass, chosen according to Cooke because “TifEagle best suits the topography and character of Rolling Oaks. TifEagle is the proven grass with no mutations based on all the choices we tested.” While Rolling Oaks’ contouring remains the same, the greens have been restored to their original size. This is a 20 percent expansion in the size of the greens prior to renovations. The Pine Barrens course remains a par 71 and Rolling Oaks remains a par 72, but both courses have extensive new teeing grounds resulting in extended yardages for both courses. Pine Barrens’ greens remain in immaculate condition. With the renovation, Rolling Oaks’ greens will run as true and as fast as those on Pine Barrens. World Woods has also added new cart paths throughout the facility and a new fleet of golf carts. The clubhouse has been totally refurbished and course restroom facilities have been renovated as well.

GOLFER’S GUIDE NEWS Local Golf News from the Greater Tampa Bay Area ■ GOLFWEEK’s GOLFEST Returns To Tampa February 18 & 19 For the second year in a row, Golfweek’s Golfest - presented by Transitions Championship - is bringing its popular demo day and golf lifestyle extravaganza back to Tampa Bay Downs Golf Practice Facility (near Oldsmar) February 18 & 19, 2012. Featuring products from more than 15 of golf’s top club, shaft and ball companies, Golfweek’s Golfest Tampa will allow attendees to try and buy golf’s hottest new equipment. Throughout the weekend, visitors will also receive special discounted Golfest pricing from major manufacturers and at the onsite PGA Discount Pro Shop. In addition to checking out the latest gear, Golfweek’s Golfest attendees can also participate in free golf lessons given by PGA pros, test their skills at the $25,000 Putting Challenge sponsored by Paradise Golf Card and The Future Champions Golf Tour, win great prizes in the Chipping Contest, visit booths from local golf courses and golf lifestyle companies and enjoy golf entertainment, trick shot shows and clinics on the Main Stage. Food and beverages will also be available. Visit Golfest.com for complete event details. ■ Family-Owned Mainlands Golf Club Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary November 2011 marked the 40th year of serving the public for Mainlands Golf Club. Accessible from most anywhere in Tampa Bay, this family owned and operated golf course has built its reputation over the years by providing the golfing public with both stellar conditions and excellent prices all in a laid back and friendly environment. Fresh from New Jersey, Bill Blair purchased the Mainlands Golf Club in 1971 from the Mainlands residential community. At that time the course was a modest offering; the fairways were often referred to as ‘cow pastures’. In the early 90’s, long-time employee Steve Franks moved outside as Superintendent. Bill Blair’s son-in-law Tom Duane moved to Florida to start under Bill as GM. This family management team helped the course come into its own as more and more time and money was spent on its conditioning and upkeep. Renovations in 2005 added a second

Gone are the bone crushing, teeth rattling cart paths, the foot-high fairway weeds, distressed, neglected greens and the “can’t do / won’t do” attitude of the staff. A total of 9.7 miles of new cart paths have been installed over the 36-hole complex at a cost of $275,000. Superintendent Bob Kuzio and his staff are dedicated to a sustainable maintenance program to assure continuing improvement of both courses. $630,000 worth of new John Deere maintenance equipment helps get the job done. The Eagles Golf Club has a long, proud heritage and new management intends to honor the past by establishing the Lakes and the Forest Courses as the new standard for affordable golf in the Tampa Bay area and Central Florida. If you haven’t played The Eagles lately, you are in for a treat, starting with new Yamaha golf carts along with the new and improved attitude of the staff. • A Message From The Chapter President I hope your Christmas and New Year’s was as wonderful as mine was. I now have a new PUTTER which I hope works better than the one I used to have. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR Here are the highlights plus the partners of the West Central Chapter. PARTICIPATION The West Central Chapter has 260 Members and Apprentices spread out over seven counties. Our tournaments are placed in three distinct geographical areas of the chapter, insuring shorter driving distances to events and increased participation. We are proud to state that 50% of our eligible players participated in at least one event. This is a slight increase over 2010. Our use of senior divisions and shorter tees helps to bring out more of our members from behind the counter. The chapter also pays more players than in the past. Overall 46 seniors played in events and 80 played in the under 50 division! The board says “thank you” to all who participated in this year’s tournament schedule. GOLFEST 2011 The WCC was heavily involved in Golfweek’s first Golfest Tampa held at The Downs Golf in February 2011. Twenty PGA Professionals gave 10-minute free lessons to over 100 golfers at the chapter / 68

The Side Game of Golf By Tim Polce, PGA
A
t a very young age my Father taught me by showing me that golf is and always will be a game. Never-ending contests and crazy challenges on and off the golf course were the norm. I don’t remember caring much about score as a young golfer. I learned from my Dad that the best way to learn any game was to make a game out of learning the game. Golf can be challenging for sure, but we should play primarily for the pure enjoyment of the game. The first rule of golf must be, have fun. Most golfers are conditioned to play golf strictly for score and enjoyment only comes if they shoot on the good side of a predetermined score. What if you start measuring improvement in your game with something other than score? Ask yourself if score is primary or secondary when you play. Can someone learn to make their score secondary? I think so. I give my students 15 side games for measuring improvement while playing and none of them relate to score. Challenge yourself each and every time you play or practice with 3 to 5 side games. Fellow professional Matt Mitchell will attest to the hundreds of hours we spent competing against each other in a chipping game called 21. The game is 3 points for a make, 2 for inside the leather and 1 for inside a club length. This game resulted in marked improvement for both and utter astonishment on the course when a chip ended up outside a club length. Breaking par while hitting only a handful of greens in regulation is big fun. Those golfers who are playing

for score are only putting for par. Those who are playing for enjoyment get to chip for birdie! Handicaps can only do three things: go up, go down, or generally stay the same. Any golfer lf who h commits to his PGA Professional will very quickly have a basic understanding of the necessary fundamentals to play effectively. The question then becomes do they play for score or do they play for enjoyment? Those who play for score are destined to fall into the ‘generally stay the same’ handicap category and will undoubtedly spend thousands of hours on the range while those who play for enjoyment will most likely play countless more rounds of golf over a lifetime while steadily improving. Remember there is no substitute for play. If you incorporate games while you play and practice, enjoyment and improvement will certainly follow.
