Interview with Mark Tupling, head of course maintenance at Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago is one of the best and most recognized golf venues in Europe. What was the motivation for the €7 million improvement project? Due to the consistently high demand to play the South Course, we have been unable to carry out significant renovation projects over the years. The mandatory closure gave the resort a great opportunity to invest in the course and improve the surfaces and playing experience that we offer. The South Course has played an integral part in the history of the resort and holds a special place in the hearts of so many of our residents and guests. As an eight-time host of the Portuguese Open, it is truly an iconic golfing venue and the enhancement programme that we’ve devised will help to ensure that it strengthens its position at the forefront of European golf.

One part of the project is to enhance players’ experiences? What in particular are you planning and how shall this enhance the already existing high experience? Aside from the improved playing surfaces, we have been able to create space adjacent to fairways. This has created stunning views through the course and will also improve playability and speed of play. All 48 bunkers on the course have been trimmed to their original size, with new drainage and sand added and compacted, while several bunkers within the pine tree canopy have been adjusted to give access to the green and two bunkers relocated to favour the modern game. In addition, the lakes on the third and 17th holes have been upgraded with new retaining walls to give a sharp, modern look consistent with the other lakes on the course, and the 16th hole has been improved by bringing the lake into play behind the green, adding drama to the closing holes.

How do you measure your guests’ experience? Do you use a regular feedback process, e.g. based on questionnaires? If yes: which tool do you apply, how often do you contact your guests and members? Making sure that we offer a high-quality experience and excellent customer service is very important to everyone at Quinta do Lago and we have a very close and open relationship with our members. The club is a second home to them and we share our goals with open feedback. We also take more formal feedback through mystery shoppers, and working with The 59Club helps tailor our training platforms so that we can keep ahead of the market.

You are cooperating with the GEO foundation: are you applying their on course program or are you aiming at an official certification? Which pros and cons do you see with either just participating in the on course program or becoming GEO certified? We are currently following the OnCourse programme with a goal to become certified. The GEO Foundation has the widest range of targets from the various sustainability platforms covering all three pillars; Economy, Environment, Community. This places the focus on all areas of our business to improve in this area and ultimately be recognised for the excellent work golf offers in society. I am an advocate for environmentally-responsible approaches to life and this is something I also aspire to uphold in the way I manage

golf courses. Quinta do Lago is blessed to border the Ria Formosa – one of the world’s largest nature reserves – and working with environmental organisations is a focus of mine in promoting the benefits that golf courses offer in nature.

GEO is a pan-European approach. Is there also a Portuguese program for golf courses regarding sustainability such as “Golf & Nature” in Germany? If yes: why have you chosen GEO instead of the local program? We are working closely with the local environment agencies; however, these policies focus solely on the environmental impacts of the golf courses. We wanted to have a broader approach and an international reach to our customers.

Irrigation is an important factor. Which improvements are you planning, how will this be embedded into daily maintenance? Are there also constructional enhancements such as additional catch basins? And by how many percent are you planning to reduce water consumption per year? In 2020, we changed our irrigation practices to be based on evapotranspiration by taking information from our on-site weather stations. This method of irrigation gives the plant exactly what was lost from the previous 24 hours, plus enough water to grow and stay healthy. This winter, we have invested in a major upgrade of the irrigation pumps on the

South Course which will improve efficiency and save water and power. We plan on making the same upgrades on the North Course this coming winter. Rather than aiming for an unrealistic saving year-on-year, it’s our aim to keep consumption below the past five years’ average consumption. This will remove the irregularities of rainfall and heatwaves as well as providing more accurate targets to be set.

Sustainability also includes a social approach. How will stakeholders and the local community around Algarve profit from the ongoing project? This is an investment. Saving water and saving electricity is a duty that everyone has worldwide. As a resort, we have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint. These are the expectations of our board members and Quinta do Lago wants to be seen as leaders in this field worldwide. We have always been a resort driven by nature with an environmental focus. We are a destination which lends itself to outdoor living and Covid enabled us to reflect on what is important and launch an enhanced ecostrategy.

Creating new habitat for endangered species is another important approach within sustainability programs. Which activities are you planning in this context? We currently work very closely with a local non-profit organisation who regularly map and audit our golf courses. One of the early driving forces behind the creation of open areas adjacent to the fairways was the removal of non-native plant species which are slowly replacing the native flora and fauna that live there. We are now monitoring these areas closely and will take action should we see change to the ecosystem. We have also installed more than100 bird boxes in the estate along with bug hotels, with the aim of increasing the species numbers as natural deterrents against processionary caterpillars and mosquitoes.

What benchmarks and KPIs have you set-up to monitor the ongoing project and its future application in daily business? Economical benchmarks have been created as a key component to the sustainability of the business. We have then complemented that with reduction of resource use, increase in player ratings and an increase in market position.

To what extent do legal restrictions and given laws (local, regional and/or nationwide) support or hinder your current project? How did you overcome given obstacles? During the summer of 2020, due to the pandemic, the local authorities made it an exception for large projects and the construction industry to stay active. This gave the region a lifeline and also allowed for the improvement work to take place.

Does the current project also include the use of new seedings or overseeding concepts for fairways and/or greens? If yes: which? The fairways and tees have been replaced with Hybrid Bermudagrass Tifway 419. The maintained rough will be transitioned to Kikuyugrass, which is now endemic in the region and will continually lower our irrigation and resource consumption.

The project requires a huge investment. What is the estimated pay-back duration, how much (in percent) of the pay-back shall be achieved by savings in maintenance costs, how much by additional golf-related revenue (which additional revenue shall be created, e.g. higher greenfees?) and how much by other revenue, e.g. from real estate? With the low-density nature, green belt and, most importantly, because the shareholders continue to invest, our pay back on this will be to remain Europe’s number one destination and beyond. And we remain committed to continuing to improve our offers and our products so that we can offer the best customer experience possible to our resident, members and guests.

Quinta da Marinha

prepares for tourism trends with €1.5m villa renovation

Quinta da Marinha is offering golfers the perfect balance of privacy, Portuguese authenticity and contemporary décor after investing €1.5m into the refurbishment of its 27 villas. With self-contained accommodation set to be the trend this summer and beyond as people ease themselves back into international travel and busy hotels following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Lisbon resort has refurbished and expanded all its existing villas to entice groups of friends and families. As well as renovating each villa to give them a fresh new look, they have also been adapted to create more space. Previously offering one-bedroom (Th1) and two-bedroom (Th2) options, each villa has been reconfigured to fit an extra single bedroom, so can now accommodate either one more adult or child each. The Th1 villa can now accommodate two adults and two children or three adults and one child, while the Th2 now sleeps four adults and two children or five adults and one child. Other than the spacious, comfortable rooms, each villa is also fully air-conditioned and features a living room with fireplace and flatscreen TV showing satellite channels, free WiFi, fully-equipped kitchenette, in addition to a garden and large outdoor terrace. Under an hour’s drive from Lisbon in stunning Cascais, the five-star Quinta da Marinha resort is part of the ‘Great Hotels of the World’ portfolio and boasts an esteemed Robert Trent Jones-designed par-71 golf course with outstanding views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains. Quinta da Marinha’s idyllic location in the heart of the Portuguese countryside is perfect for holidaymakers looking to escape and disconnect from the stresses of the past 18 months, while also having the option to keep space from other travellers. For those who would like to stay in their own ‘bubble’, picnic baskets and meals can be ordered as a takeaway from the resort’s Rocca restaurant or even delivered to the villa’s door. There is also a concierge service so that guests can purchase goods without the need to leave their accommodation. Quinta da Marinha sales director, João Pinto Coelho, said: “Our villa renovation programme has been completed just as the right time as we start to welcome back international visitors again. “We feel that this type of accommodation will be extremely popular for the remainder of the year with people desperate to get away, but may still want to distance themselves from the hustle and bustle and limit their social contact. Our villas are the perfect solution – as our guests will still be able to escape to the spectacular Portuguese sunshine and enjoy everything our resort has to offer.” Guests can combine rounds of golf with visits to the resort’s outdoor pool, the heated indoor pool, as well as the sauna, Turkish bath and sensory showers. There is also an abundance of other activities available at an extra cost, including bike tours, horse riding, tennis and padel courts, surfing lessons and private guided tours to Sintra and Lisbon. A stunning stretch of coastline is just a few minutes away, while there is much more to the enticing region with wine-tasting, historic landmarks, outstanding beaches – including the famous Guincho Beach – and the breathtaking natural beauty of the SintraCascais Natural Park to explore. 5 ways yoga can help you improve your golf game

Yoga for golfers incorporates flexibility, strength, balance, core conditioning, and breathing awareness. Yoga for golfers also teaches focus, relaxation, and visualization techniques. The sequence of postures is carefully designed to meet a golfer’s specific needs.

Yoga for Golfers program slightly modifies certain aspects of the traditional yoga practice. We offer simplified breathing techniques to enhance concentration and increase endurance on the golf course. Meditation is practiced to calm the mind, increase focus, and visualize the desired golfspecific outcomes.

1. Flexibility

Flexibility, the most obvious physical benefit for golf that can be achieved through yoga, is a core component of the YFG program. Flexibility increases the range of motion in the golf swing, reduces swing faults caused by short, tight muscles.

2. Better balance

In golf, balance in the stance and throughout the entire swing plane is vital for a repeatable and reliable golf swing.

3.Strengths

Strength is achieved in yoga by flexing or engaging the muscles. We use the force of gravity and bodyweight to build strength.

4.Core conditioning

Core conditioning, which involves strengthening the centrally important abdominal and back muscles are one of the most important aspects of golf performance and a critical element for longevity in the sport.

5. Focus

Breathing awareness is the number one element in the practice of yoga. The quality of breath has a direct relationship to the quality of the pose and the mind. When the body is over-stressed, either in a yoga pose or in the golf swing, erratic, short breathing is the first sign. By providing tools for incorporating breathing into the pre-shot routine, the golfer practices rhythm and tempo through breath. Focus, meditation, and visualization are indispensable tools on the golf course.

Regardless of age, physical challenge, or flexibility, Yoga for golfers offers the tools to begin, maintain, and advance one’s yoga practice to achieving results both on and off the golf course. If you visit one of our best destinations in the Algarve you can learn more from Nicole in person, or check out the website for an online Yoga for golfer lesson.

Palheiro Golf to flower with new Autumn tournament

Golfers across the UK and Europe have added incentive to head to Palheiro Golf in Madeira this autumn with the launch of a new event that showcases some of the finest experiences that the award-winning resort has to offer on and away from the fairways. Taking place from October 1-5, the inaugural ‘Palheiro Gardens Golf Classic’ combines world-class golf with the opportunity to sample a slice of the islands’ famous culture and history – including Madeira’s globally acclaimed annual ‘Festa da Flor’ Flower Festival. Costing just €110 per person to enter or free when purchasing a three or five-day Madeira Golf Passport beforehand, the event features a pre-tournament sunset welcome party before players compete in an 18-hole individual Stableford competition on Palheiro Golf’s acclaimed championship course, with unique giveaways and a prize-giving ceremony with cocktail included at the famous Palheiro Gardens. A trip to the island’s capital of Funchal to the Madeira Flower Festival follows the day after the tournament with free golf also included in the event package, while on Monday, October 4, there will be a special visit to the famous Blandy’s Madeira Wine Lodge in Funchal including wine tasting. Regularly ranked among the top 100 resorts in Europe, Palheiro Golf is one of three outstanding golf venues in the archipelago of Madeira. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, the venue’s par-72, 6,656-yard (6,086m) course is situated within the magnificent Palheiro Estate, which is more than 200 years old. At nearly 1,640ft above sea level, the location enjoys dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the ocean, as well as – nestling below, just 10 minutes away – the island’s capital, Funchal. Taking place this year from October 1-24, the Madeira Flower Festival offers visitors the unforgettable chance to experience a kaleidoscope of colour and the magic that runs through the municipalities of the Madeira archipelago with an array of unique exhibits made totally from flowers. Palheiro Golf and the other two-18 hole courses in Madeira and her islands, Clube de Golfe Santo da Serra and Porto Santo Golf have enjoyed a steady increase in overseas bookings in the last 12 months with growing numbers of European golfers eager to experience the many benefits of playing firstclass golf in a safe and secure environment. Located approximately 1,000km from the European mainland – and just 500km from the African continent – the island destination, named as the world and Europe’s leading island destination at the 2020 World Travel Awards, enjoys an amazingly mild climate, ranging from 25°c in the summer to 17°c in the winter, with very mild average temperatures and moderate humidity, making it the perfect year-round location for a golf break. Visiting the islands has never been easier, with a wide range of flights operating on a daily basis from all over the UK and Europe, and Madeira. Belongs to all – the consumer-facing brand of the Madeira Promotion Bureau – has taken every step to ensure the safety of every resident and visitor. Since the start of the pandemic, the archipelago has been considered one of the safest destinations in Europe and has been widely praised for its handling of the Covid-19 crisis. Madeira has recently been named as one of the safest destinations for 2021 by European Best Destinations and has worked closely with SGS, the world’s leading certification company, to ensure safe practice across the destination and minimise risk in regard to Covid-19. Under the umbrella brand “Madeira Safe to Discover”, Madeira. Belongs to all has published updated guidelines for all incoming visitors, including for people who have been vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19. The green corridor already exists at Madeira airport for those who arrive with a vaccination certificate or with proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours. Alternatively, visitors can take a free test at the airport on arrival. One free PCR test per visitor is offered, to be taken on arrival or departure, with results in 12 hours. There are also discounts on offer for any further tests required, with PCR tests from €90 and antigen tests from €18. In addition, a tourist or individual who has tested positive in the last 90 days may be excused, if they are provided with a medical document that proves and certifies that this carrier is recovered from the disease Covid-19 and that it has occurred in the last three months. Incoming visitors will also be subject to thermal screening, even if they carry a negative test for Covid-19. The best way to enjoy the archipelago’s golf is with a Madeira Golf Passport which, providing holders with an unrivalled golf experience, is available to both individuals and groups and can be booked on a three or five-round basis.

The Palmares Clubhouse

designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects

After the redesign of the golf course, Palmares Ocean Living & Golf has seen a truly significant addition to its already prestigious resort, with a new and amazing Clubhouse designed by RCR Arquitectes, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Award.

The new state-of-the-art Clubhouse embraces the ocean, providing stunning, more than 180º ocean views from the Alvor Estuary, the Meia-Praia and Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. Combining exceptional design with comfort and high-quality finishes, the attention to detail is present throughout the facilities.

We believe that Palmares Ocean Living & Golf, with its renowned 27holes golf course (Alvor, Praia and Lagos), the practice facilities (North and South driving range areas, 3 putting greens (1 new putting green near tee 10, 1 chipping green), and now with the new clubhouse delivering a high standard of service and focus on customer experience will be, undoubtedly, one of the best resorts in the Algarve. Truly remarkable.

Clubhouse Operation

Interior parking spaces: situated on the -1 floor, the parking space also has electric car chargers available. Outside parking spaces: Just outside the clubhouse, we will provide assistance and bring you and your clubs to the clubhouse.

Reception and Pro shop area: A welcoming reception is set strategically to welcome your clients and provide the best service possible before, during and after your golf round.

Food & Beverage

We are excited to announce that the Michelin Star awarded Chef Louis Anjos has just recently joined Palmares team. He will run all the F&B operations in the Clubhouse and Hotel, making sure that service and high quality is delivered both to golfers who have just finished their round, or clients looking to experience the uniqueness of the fine dining restaurant.

Chef Louis Anjos’s background speaks for itself, an award-winning Chef with some of his achievements being: Portugal’s Most Promising New Chef and Best Chef awards (in 2012 and 2016), as well as successfully owning a one-star Michelin for 3 consecutive years. It is exciting to see that the talent and imagination that Louis Anjos brings, using the best local ingredients to deliver the most elegant and exquisite fine dining meal or comfort and relaxed food, is combined also by his love to meet people. And no better place to do so than Palmares Clubhouse and Palmares Beach House Hotel

The space has panoramic sea views, restaurants, modern golf support infrastructures and full concierge services for golfers and property owners, as well as visitors.

F&B Facilities

Lounge Bar & Restaurant area: Modern yet cosy atmosphere that invites you to enjoy the views whilst enjoying a meal or simply a drink.

Fine dining area: The vision, from the start, included the possibility to offer a unique gastronomy experience using local products and promoting what the Algarve has to offer, and even more special is to enjoy that overlooking the ocean. The fine dining will be up and running from early 2021.

Groups and events area: We know it is important to welcome larger groups, but we wanted them to have the same experience, the same breathtaking views, the same standard of service. It will host up to 140 pax and will make your event (golfers or nongolfers) even more special.

Terrace: With more than 300 sunny days per year, it would not be logical if the project did not include a proper space to welcome vitamin D. That is why the clubhouse terrace follows the width of the facilities, more than 50m wide, leaving you with the choice to enjoy the east or west views, all of them stunning.
