your permanent golf vacation

begins now.

You’ll feel it the moment you enter the community. The tree lined streets, lush landscaping and brick walkways. With its magnificent Clubhouse as it’s centerpiece, the feeling is traditional and memorable. Then there’s the worldclass Baywood Greens golf course that winds it way through the community, creating backyard vistas like nothing else around. And if that weren’t enough, there are marinas with boat slips with access to Rehoboth Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, beaches, restaurants and shopping all just minutes away.

Known as the “Augusta of the North,” Baywood Greens is by far the most visually spectacular golf course in Delaware and is consistently ranked #1 by Golf Digest’s Best in State.

Instruction

Q&A with Fiddler’s Elbow Golf Academy Leaders

George Deitz and Mike Adams Adams: We provide lessons to well over 800,000 players annually, from beginners to tour players. And they come from all over the world.

Q. What makes Fiddler’s Elbow Golf Academy unique and why is it so popular? Deitz: The answer is the magic mix of teaching talent, a great facility and stateof-the-art technology. But, frankly, it all starts with Hall of Fame instructor Mike Adams (ranked #3 nationally by Golf Digest), whose experience, reputation and commitment is unique and exceptional. Mike is an innovator who is constantly researching and evolving his approach to the golf swing. He gets his students immediate results. Mike is equally great and willing to teach the teachers so much so that many PGA instructors travel to work with Mike on their teaching techniques and our young instructors are learning at an accelerated rate. Adams: I feel fortunate to work with talented colleagues like Gia Liwski, an LPGA Top 50 Instructor and a Golf Digest NJ Top 5 instructor and stars on the rise such as Head Pro Ryan Buckley and Jeremy Eccles, as well as young up and comers Danny Harcourt, Chris Harkness, Brad

Q. You mentioned technology plays a big role in distinguishing teaching academies. How so? Deitz: We are second to none when it comes to tech. Our students get the best of both worlds, namely, exceptional instruction and immediate data and feedback. We offer the Swing Catalyst video system, Swing Cat Force Plates, Smart 2 Move Force Plates, 4 Trackmen, Foresight Quad for ball tracking, Sam Putt Lab, and the Swing Groover designed by David Adell and Mike Adams, just to name a few. Jeremy Eccles, Golf Coach & Head of Junior Development

Q. Fiddler’s is known to be a beautiful club. What do the practice facilities look like?

Pinto, Jacob Smith, and Daniel Miessner.

Deitz: Our academy building has three fully equipped indoor bays that are utilized year-round. Our award-winning double-sided range is roughly 330 yards long and 130 yards wide with a very large grass and matted hitting area. We have fairway

Q. It’s every pros commitment to grow the game and to help players to improve. How many golfers do you touch at the Fiddler’s Academy?

LPGA Top 50 Instructor Gia Liwski 8

George Deitz, Director of Golf bunkers, greenside bunkers, two putting greens and a large short game area. Mike Adams, Hall of Famer, Director of Instruction

Q. You mentioned awards? Deitz: We are fortunate to win a lot of awards including GRAA Top 50 Range in U.S., and most recently being named a Golf Digest Editor’s Choice for Best in Golf Academies and Instruction, as well as Top 4 Facility in the Northeast by Golf Digest. The best award is the feedback from the touring pros, club pros, and amateur ladies and gentlemen that frequent our academy and instructors. It helps to also have Mike and Gia Liwski on board. Gia is a disciple of Mike who specializes in ladies’ programs and experiences. She is also top ranked and received a Top 40 under 40 recognition from Golf Digest. Q. Anything else we should know?

Ryan Buckley, Head Golf Professional

Adams: It’s a great team here led by George who has an ability to find young teaching talent and a philosophy to stay out of their way. He is there to guide as needed and provides them the tools and support they need. The door to my hitting bay is always open! Deitz: We attract the best of the best because they know they will learn from the best and jumpstart their careers. George Deitz is Director of Golf and Mike Adams is Director of Instruction at Fiddler’s Elbow in Bedminster, New Jersey. They can be reached at 908-439-2123.

A

ccountable Equity today announces it has acquired the Sea Oaks Golf Resort in Ocean County, New Jersey. In a transaction valued at more than $6.5 million, the opportunity will supercharge the ‘drive to’ resort MidAtlantic market, offering a greater variety of awardwinning destinations and guest experiences for golf lovers, locals and visitors. As part of the deal, Accountable Equity, owners and operators of the hugely successful Renault Winery Resort and Vineyard National Golf Course in Egg Harbor, also hinted at plans for the new acquisition.

will be announced soon. The golf course reopening will bring back 25-50 jobs to Ocean County and has the potential to create an additional 175 positions in the county by next year. “We’re excited at the prospect of Sea Oaks Golf Resort becoming part of the VIVÂMEE Signature Collection,” said Josh McCallen, Accountable Equity Founder and CEO. “We believe our blend of hospitality culture and development expertise puts us in a unique position to provide tremendous long-term dividends for Sea Oaks in the years to come as we grow.” The property consists of an Inn with 31

rooms and suites, 35,000 sq ft country club, banquet space, two restaurants, three bars, outdoor dining space, plus an 18-hole championship golf course and driving range with skyline nighttime views of Atlantic City. Barbara Balongue of Balongue Design Inc. has been commissioned to lead a $4.5M resort rebrand, beginning immediately, including upgrades to guest rooms, entertainment spaces, bars and restaurants. As a VIVÂMEE Signature Collection resort, the LBI National Golf & Resort revival vision will focus on the prestigious 194-acre golf course, bespoke weddings and unique events. Golfers looking to hit the links will also benefit from investment in property, and return of the expert practice facility, driving range, practice bunker and putting green. LBI National is located onehour from Philadelphia, 30 minutes from Atlantic City and is less than 20-minutes from Long Beach Island, ideal as a drive to or city escape vacation. “Today’s guest yearns for exceptional destinations and authentic hospitality. It’s more than just operating hotels. It’s an intimately human service cherishing the souls of guests, and the team we trust to serve them, all of which are key to achieving our goals,” added McCallen. Accountable Equity, owners of Renault Winery Resort, in Egg Harbour City, NJ, and Kent Island Resort, Stevensville, MD, have seen record year-on-year growth in the last year. As a leading private resort development company with 200-plus employees, Accountable Equity has led two multi-milliondollar investment programs in two VIVÂMEE Signature Collection resorts; continuing to transform them and is delivering new levels of exciting experience-focussed resorts. Crystal Springs Resort

Hosts Inaugural Women’s Golf Event

O

n Monday, July 11, 2022, Crystal Springs Resort, located in scenic northwestern New Jersey, is hosting its inaugural Metro WE Golf Open at Wild Turkey Golf Course in Hamburg. The Resort invites New York Metro area companies to send their two best Women Executives (WE), current or aspiring, to compete in this exciting event. The winning twosome’ company will receive a Get in the Game golf clinic and overnight stay for six employees. This clinic is designed to help novice golfers accelerate their ability to effectively conduct business on the golf course. Topics include the basics of the game, golf etiquette, ways golf can help advance a career, tips for networking and selling on the golf course. Crystal Springs is also offering an array of enticing outing prizes, apart from those for the winning team. These include overnight stays at the AAA 4-diamond Grand Cascades Lodge, dinner for two at 4-star Restaurant Latour (rated NJ’s best fine dining experience), golf at the state’s top-rated Ballyowen and a Spa Daycation at Spas of America rated Reflections Spa. Foursomes may participate in support of the open; however, only company-sponsored twosomes are eligible to win the tournament cup. Participation in this event will support the LPGA Girls Golf of Greater Newark event at Crystal Springs Resort on September 18th. The only national initiative of its kind just for girls, this program provides the opportunity to achieve success and establish a life-long interest in the game. It also helps develop self-esteem, provides grant opportunities, offers an incentive to continue to improve your game and creates a network in which girls feel comfortable in golf. The outing’s hosting Wild Turkey course is a beautifully routed layout and features holes along a ridgeline and others located in a sunken, or basin, area. The tee shot on the first hole is from a severely elevated tee to a massive fairway below and proves to be a visually fun way to start play. Of note is the seventh, which plays close to 200 yards from the tips and the tee shot must clear a quarry lake. The hole is very similar to the well-known 11th at Crystal Springs Golf Course, although this one plays straight across the quarry and not from an elevated tee. The Metro WE Golf Open event cost is $185 per person plus tax and service charge. The Phantom of the Open

N

ew Jersey has hosted its fair share of major golf tournaments. Baltusrol boasts seven U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships, the first in 1903. Englewood Golf Club was the site of the 1909 U.S. Open and Seaview Country Club the 1942 PGA Championship. Jack Nicklaus hoisted two trophies in the Garden State while Sam Snead and Phil Mickelson claim one apiece. Golfers and golf fans count down the days until major tournament weeks begin. It’s when elite players are supposed to shine, underdogs often take center stage and lives are changed forever upon a win. While victors are praised, mere mortal golfers are often satisfied with playing the best rounds they can muster within our unique limitations. That’s the theme of the heartwarming golf movie, “The Phantom of the Open,” that opens in theaters nationally beginning June 3. Based on the true story of the “world’s worst golfer,” “Phantom” holds potential to be the most heartwarming and memorable golf movie of all time. It’s part because the story actually happened, part because the script is full of hilarity and part because the relationship between the main characters is genuinely special and superbly played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance and Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins. Maurice Flitcroft (Rylance) is a life-long dreamer. Things have never been easy for the working-class family man, but along the way he’s tried his hand at everything from writing and painting to high-diving and songwriting. His philosophy in life is simple: follow your dreams – something he encourages everyone around him to do, as well. When 1976 arrives, Maurice, with three adult sons and his loving wife Jean by his side, is staring down the barrel of unemployment as the ship building industry becomes nationalized. Facing an uncertain future, inspiration strikes him one day … in the form of a golf club. 20

With encouragement from Jean (Hawkins), he applies to enter the Open Golf Championship as a professional. The only drawback of Maurice’s plan is that’s he’s never played a round of golf in his life. With pluckiness, optimism and his twin sons – who happen to be champion disco dancers – rallying alongside him, Maurice pulls off a series of stunning, hilarious, and heart-warming attempts to compete at the highest level of professional golf. All came without success and much to the annoyance of the elitist golfing community. Notwithstanding is efforts delighted fans worldwide where his exploits became folklore.

Golfing Magazine • New Jersey/E. Pennsylvania Section

The crus of Maurice’s historical travails: At the 1976 Open Championship qualifying round at Formby, Flitcroft made history by shooting 121, 49 over par and the worst score ever in Open history (a record that still stands today and will probably never be broken). He was 46 at the time and playing his first round of golf with a set of cheap mail-order golf clubs packed into his imitation-leather red golf bag. The British press went wild for Maurice’s story, but golf ’s governing body The Royal & Ancient, tried to ban him from ever playing again. Maurice didn’t give up and, over the next two decades, he tried, tried and tried again to qualify for the Open in increasingly bizarre ways. He continued to enter the Open under pseudonyms such as Gene Pacecki, Gerald Hoppy, James Beau Jolly, Arnold Palmtree and Count Manfred Von Hoffmenstal, among others, sometimes employing elaborate disguises such as fake moustaches, wigs and a deer stalker hat. His golf never improved to professional level, but he was determined to pursue his passion and he last played the Open in 1990.

Travel

America’s Favorite Island

H

ilton Head Island, SC – is a golf mecca, family-friendly destination, and most noted for its outdoor pursuits. Due to increased demand for advanced reservations, Hilton Head Golf Island’s premier resort partners – The Sea Pines Resort, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and The Heritage Golf Collection – are making their fall golf packages available for booking this now at www. hiltonheadgolfisland.com. Comprising 26 courses across the scenic South Carolina Lowcountry counties of Beaufort, Bluffton and Jasper, “Golf Island” has long been one of the nation’s most sought-after golf destinations. The region’s stunning setting – marked by barrier islands, coastal marshes, and Spanish moss-draped live oaks – has inspired timeless designs from Pete Dye, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Arthur Hills, Bob Cupp, Willard Byrd, George Cobb, Clyde Johnston, Davis Love III, and other noted architects. A new addition on the island’s culinary scene is Quarterdeck—a beautifully designed restaurant adjacent to Hilton Head’s iconic lighthouse landmark in Harbour Town at The Sea Pines Resort and

24

one of the hottest reservations in town. Generous indoor and outdoor seating options on an expansive wraparound deck, an indoor bar and dining area on the first floor, and a rooftop oyster bar offering 270-degree views of Harbour Town Yacht Basin, the famed 18th hole of Harbour Town Golf Links, and Calibogue Sound are part of the all-new restaurant. The wide choice of seating areas allows Quarterdeck to serve guests seeking a romantic sunset cocktail as well as a golf group comparing the day’s scores. A circular bar, firepits with soft seating, open-air dining with breezes off the water, an oystershucking station, and other welcoming features add to the engaging dynamics of this new attraction. app. Phone: 843-842-1999 Next door, the iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse has added an exciting chapter to its storied history with the installation of a genuine Fresnel lens to further the power of the light that blossoms from the top. Just over five decades old, the red-andwhite striped Lighthouse serves not only as a beacon to the many ships that reside in the Yacht Basin but also as a landmark that symbolizes the region and the resort. Developed in the 1820s for use in lighthouses, Fresnel (pronounced “fray-NEL”) lenses are not only stunning pieces of artwork, but their functionality has led them to be called “the invention that saved a million ships.” For visitors to the Lighthouse, the 114-step trip to the observation deck now offers an additional payoff. The lens installed in the lighthouse is a replica of an original Fourth Order Fresnel lens. Orders are a reference to size, with first order being the smallest and sixth being the largest. “The Fresnel lens is as beautiful in the day as when it’s illuminated at night,” Rob Bender, director of recreation and marine operations for The Sea Pines Resort. “There is a great deal of history associated

with this Lighthouse and this represented a great opportunity to add to it.” Harbour Town Lighthouse, which is open 10 a.m. to sundown for daily tours, features numerous historical exhibits as well as a gift shop. Admission is $5.75 per person; children 5 and under are free. FALL GOLF PACKAGES The Villa Golf Package (The Sea Pines Resort) The Sea Pines Resort’s most popular stay-and-play for small groups, the Villa Golf Package starts at $335 per person per night. It includes three total rounds on Harbour Town, Heron Point by Pete Dye, and Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III and three nights’ deluxe villa accommodations. Afternoon replays are available for $75 on Heron Point and Atlantic Dunes. The resort’s private villas are the perfect lodging option for golfers to relax after a long, rewarding day under the Lowcountry sun. The Golf Group Package (The Sea Pines Resort) Designed for leisure golf groups of 12 or more, the Golf Group Package (also $335 per person, per night) features three total rounds on Harbour Town, Heron Point by Pete Dye and Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III, three nights’ deluxe villa accommodations, gratis resort gift, a personal on-site coordinator, and complimentary afternoon replays on Heron Point. In appreciation for the hard work and planning that goes

into organizing and executing a golf buddy trip, the group leader’s golf is covered by the resort. Birdies and Beer Golf Getaway (Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort) Back by popular demand, Palmetto Dunes Birdies and Beer Golf Getaway is fully customizable by group size and preferences. By, JOHN TORSIELLO

reated by legendary golfer and world-renowned golf architect Jack Nicklaus, The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge in Monroe, New York is a stunning track that was carved out of the mature forests and rolling hills of a 220-acre estate. It features rock formations, extreme elevation changes, and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Nicklaus, known for his uncanny ability to put just enough challenge into his routings to test the very best players while not overpowering the recreational golfer, designed the course at Mansion Ridge to test your shotmaking skills and stamina. You will be asked to negotiate wetlands and strike crisp shots over and around bunkers, as well as some water. The layout measures 6,899 yards from the tips and plays to a par of 72. Mansion Ridge’s course is a unique golfing experience, with a layout and design that will challenge all individuals, regardless of handicap. In addition to the recreational golfer, the course draws metropolitan New York’s best players, PGA professionals, and even a few Tour players to give it their best against the master’s work.

“The Club at Mansion Ridge continues to push for the highest possible standards in guest service and golf course conditions,” said General Manager, Patrick Wynn. The property is managed by Troon Golf. “Our Superintendent, Rob Capecelatro, has now been with us for four years, and really has the place dialed in. Nick Schremser, our Director of Golf, continues to work with his team to ensure a smooth and friendly round from the bag drop to the pro shop to our on course player assistants. Our pricing is done dynamically meaning that it is always based on availability. The further out you book the lower the rate you will receive most of the time.” As mentioned, Mansion Ridge is a tough but fair test, reiterated Wynn. “The course has some holes with scoring opportunities and others where you are happy to walk away with a par. Playing from the right tees it can be a fun test for all levels of golfers. “This has been a busy year for us,” continued Wynn. “We’ve still seen an increase in the public play similar to last year, but more of the golf outings are returning. Most of our golfers live within about an hour of club. That includes a lot of northern New Jersey, New York City, Westchester County

in New York and into Connecticut. We do see some guests coming from a little further like out on Long Island which is great to see, and we hope they can make the trip back again soon.” Manson Ridge is “always” running a variety of specials in its restaurant on various days, said Wynn, “but with our dynamic pricing, your best bet for golf is to book as far in advance as possible. We do throw in some tee time specials on slower days as well.” Mansion Ridge is a stunning routing. “We have what is known as Bear’s Corner, which is holes 12 through 16,” explained Wynn. This is the toughest stretch of holes on the course and can make or break your round. Nine, a 540-yard par-five, is the hardest hole, but is surrounded by a few easier ones. The Bear’s Corner starts with a 167yard par-three over water (the 12th) with large bunkers and a hazard directly over the green. The 13th is a medium length par-four but requires a good approach shot in to a small green, a large bunker left is a hard place to get up and down from.” Wynn continued, “On 14, you have to be positioned on the left hand side of the fairway to have a clear shot in to the green. The green sits on top of the hill so your blind sec-

ond shot is a real challenge. The par-five 15th requires a good tee shot to get to the top of the hill but thick woods left and trouble right could lead to a big number. Longer hitters may try to go for it in two, but the greenside bunkers swallow up a lot of these attempts.” Wynn said the 16th doesn’t look intimidating on the scorecard but with a straightup-the-hill tee shot and out of bounds left and trees right you need to be very pre-

cise. “The second shot is also uphill in to green with a false front. We call this Bear’s Corner not only for our course designer Jack Nicklaus but also this area sits up against a state park where you can see bears crossing the fairways on occasion.” A little about the holes prior to Bear’s Corner. The course gives you a little time to warm up before you’re hit with a tough par-four,

the sixth, measuring 422 yards. There’s a forced carry off the tee, and a good drive will leave you an exacting mid-iron to a kidneyshaped green. The eighth is a great, short par-four, playing 356 yards from the tips. Favor the left center of the fairway to avoid a sharp drop off to the right. Figure an extra club to the uphill green and watch out for a huge bunker that guards the right side of the putting surface. Number 10 gives you a bit of a rest as you open the inward nine. The 363-yard par-four will leave you a short iron to a tired green, as long as you hit the fairway. By the way, the 18th is one of the best finishing holes in the region. It’s 478 yards, but a well struck drive will tumble down a hill and leave you a mid-iron to a green protected by a pond to the left. It is simply a super way to finish a memorable round. “The club is always looking for new ways to improve on our services and offerings,” said Wynn. We have golf carts with fully equipped GPS and Bluetooth speakers that you can connect your phone.” Mansion Ridge also specializes in group/corporate golf outings, fundraisers, and charity events, with a full-service catering facility onsite.
